In a notable milestone for TelevisaUnivision’s Spanish-language streaming service, the company reported that its direct-to-consumer business delivered full-year profitability for 2025, strong margins and consistent year-over-year quarterly growth in ViX’s third year of operations.

Beyond those statements, the company did not provide a breakout of its DTC subscribers, revenue or profits.

The full year results for the company showed that revenue totaled $4.8 billion, and said revenue sequentially improved each quarter during the year based on continued financial momentum from ViX, expanded linear distribution in the U.S. and stable advertising in Mexico. In addition, it reported that operating Income was $605 million with adjusted OIBDA (operating income before depreciation and amortization) increased 2% to $1.6 billion driven by operating leverage and sustained cost discipline.

“2025 was a pivotal year for our company, our first as a new leadership team and the first in which we showcased our revamped content and platform investment and windowing strategy. We meaningfully transformed our business and delivered on the expectations that we set at the outset of the year,” said Daniel Alegre, CEO of TelevisaUnivision. “ViX delivered record revenue, achieved profitability in every quarter, and expanded operating margins throughout the year, evolving into a scalable growth engine that is now a strategically central component to our business model. In 2026, we are building on this momentum to deepen audience engagement, unlock greater value for our partners, and reinforce our leadership as the Voice of Hispanics.”

ATLANTA and LONDON—Mexican telecommunications and broadcast company Televisa has selected Synamedia for an overhaul of its broadcast distribution.

The broadcast will deploy Synamedia’s Media Edge Gateway (MEG) and PowerVu across its network of 180 stations around Mexico to increase the agility of video distribution, processing and delivery, the company said.

By selecting Synamedia’s MEG, Televisa cut its hardware dependency in half, not only delivering cost benefits but also the modern technologies needed to future-proof its operations, it said.

During the evaluation phase, Televisa used dozens of MEGs as a part of its strategy to broadcast the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Synamedia managed backup channels and frame rate conversion. The success of the project contributed to Televisa’s ultimate decision to select Synamedia as its new software partner, it said.

“Not only did Synamedia build us a truly unique solution – one that doesn’t exist anywhere in the world – but it also demonstrated exactly what we desired in a partner: commitment to both innovation and our long-term success,” said William Aguirre, general manager of satellite operations at Televisa.

“Our internal team sourced our hardware provider Siselectron to provide a powerful SR1 device (2nd Gen AMD EPYC processor) and work on the customization for our specific needs. From there, we knew we wanted software and hardware partners agile enough to meet our present and future needs. Synamedia was quick to sign up and deliver and has been an instrumental part of the team, already demonstrating positive results. We’re thrilled with our choice.”

Synamedia’s MEG is a flexible, software-defined receiver with edge processing functions, such as transcoding, regionalization, time delay and blackout, across satellite, CDN and IP networks. The combination of Synamedia’s PowerVu distribution platform and MEG provides Televisa with secure content distribution, centralized control and edge processing to tailor content handoffs to meet the needs of affiliates and MVPDs. For Televisa, MEG helps ensure content is securely distributed due to Synamedia’s PowerVu conditional access, it said.

Earlier in April, one of Televisa’s largest stations went live with Synamedia MEG and PowerVu across Guadalaraja. The project will continue to roll out through summer 2024 and in stages for the next two years, to cover all stations in Mexico, the company said.

More information is available on the company’s website.

MEXICO CITY—Televisa, one of the leading media companies in Latin America and operator of a direct-to-home satellite pay television system in Mexico, has chosen ETL Systems’ RF distribution equipment for its ground segment upgrade.

ETL Systems, designers and manufactures of RF distribution equipment, were chosen to replace and upgrade Televisa’s existing 64 x 64 matrix that has become obsolete as their operation had grown.

In order to receive signals from multiple satellites, Televisa required a bigger matrix to then distribute these signals to all integrated receiver decoders (IRDs).

Following multiple tests, Televisa selected ETL’s Harrier 128x128 matrix for the upgrade, as it met Televisa’s minimum capacity requirements of 72x80 and gave them an option to expand in the future.

The size (10U) of the Harrier chassis was also beneficial as they were limited on available space.

Commenting on the project Amar Achaibou, Amfar director general explained that “the response from ETL software when the matrix lost power was much faster than the competition, as was the stability of the signal after passing through the matrix. ETL also offered a free lifetime support guarantee, so should we encounter any issues we can rely on their support. Both of these factors are incredibly important to us, as we pride ourselves on offering a great service for consumers.”

“We were also impressed by the different options of input/output modules, the architecture of the matrix and its modular design,” he continued. “During the demo period the whole team used the software, praising the intuitive and user-friendly interface, as well as the alarm reports.”

The project was the acquisition of one piece of equipment - ETL’s L-Band matrix 72x80, which will be used in the Rx site of the broadcaster, news, feeds own programming for monitoring. All satellite traffic that comes to the facility needs to pass through this piece of equipment, making reliability and redundancy crucially important.

Local integrator Amfar were also involved with the project, helping with the logistics to import and deliver equipment to Televisa and also some support of the equipment.

RASTATT, Germany—The Televisa facilities in San Angel, Mexico—which primarily produces telenovelas and other live programming—recently received an upgrade to a fully networked production environment using Lawo IP-based mixing and routing systems, headlined by the mc2 production consoles and Ravenna/AES67 I/O systems.

Televisa had previous experience with Lawo, installing a pair of 64-fader mc266 audio production consoles for its Audio OP trucks. The upgrades at the facility included four mc256 consoles, as well as additional DSP and routing devices in three large production areas. The mc256 desks are configured with 64, 48, 32 and 16 faders and HD cores and SoundGrid integration. Lawo’s Dallis I/O systems supply each unit, completed by a row of A_mic8 and A_digital8 high-quality AoIP interfaces.

Other areas of the Televisa production facility now include to mc236 consoles in a 24-fader frame, as well as Compact I/O units. The Nova73 HD central router and all of the production units are fully operational and networked via a Ravenna/AES67 infrastructure.

All of the units that were part of the installation work with current IP standards, like SMPTE 2022-6/7, 2110 and AES67, but are also future-proof for new IP standards.

In total five production facilities for Televisa were updated using Lawo products.

Mexico City, Mexico — Televisa, the television studio and broadcast behemoth, has added Point Source Audio’s EMBRACE EO-8WL microphones for use in their popular telenovela and music competition reality productions. Headquartered in Mexico City, Televisa is considered to be one of the largest mass media conglomerates and content creators in Latin America. The vast majority of its programming is for the Hispanic market with much of its content airing in the United States. The microphone purchase was made through Point Source Audio dealer Magnum Digital based in Mexico City.

David Camacho is the sales manager at Magnum Digital and oversaw the sale to Televisa. Camacho was equally impressed by this new solution Point Source Audio provided to his customer, commenting that “They had been using ‘normal’ lavaliers and it used to take a lot of time to wire an actor; EMBRACE mics have allowed them to wire the actors so much faster.” He further emphasized, “There were always noise problems with clothing, jewelry, or chest hair when using traditional lavs; the EMBRACE products solved all those issues.”

The EMBRACE microphones hold two patents and were originally designed for use in theatre but have been finding their way into many new applications including television broadcast. Unlike traditional lavalier mics where the placement on the actor can lead to extraneous noise being picked up from clothing, jewelry or other elements, the EMBRACE microphones have a patented over-the-ear mic mount that can be customized for each actor which allows the mic to sit closer to the mouth and away from clothing. The earmount lavaliers maintain consistent placement from the mouth regardless of head movement and conceal easily.

Measuring only 4 mm in diameter, the EMBRACE model EO-8WL is an omnidirectional microphone that can be ordered in beige, brown, or black making it ideal for concealing. The EO-8WL boasts an IP 57 waterproof rating so it is protected from water, sweat, and makeup. The microphone ships with interchangeable X-Connectors compatible with all popular wireless systems including Sennheiser, Shure, Lectrosonics, Audio-Technica, and others. A windscreen, left and right earmounts, and an assortment of clothing clips are included.

“We’ve been very happy with all of the Point Source Audio products," states Camacho. “They sound great and our customers see them as problem solvers. Their compatibility with every pro wireless system on the market is also a big advantage.”

Point Source Audio will be showcasing EMBRACE microphones for broadcasters at upcoming industry events including the NRB Convention in Anaheim, March 26-29, booth 722; and the NAB Convention in Las Vegas, April 6-11, booth C2357.
MEXICO CITY—Grupo Televisa is the largest media company in the Spanish-speaking world and a major player in the international entertainment business. I have been an audio engineer at Televisa for five years now and have mixed thousands of live television programs for Mexico’s premier channel, including all-important live football matches that are broadcast to our viewers worldwide.

Calrec’s Soccer Assist app in action in the Televisa control room

KEEPING UP WITH THE GAME
When it came to mixing the audio for live football, my main challenge was to follow the play and catch the sound of the action at just the right time; for example, capturing the sound of the ball being kicked precisely when it happened. It was difficult to do because, in some games, the play was just too fast and I had only a fraction of a second to open the correct mic and catch the action. At the same time, I had to mix the ambience of the stadium in order to capture the environment and mood of the game. It was a very tricky, physically demanding combination of tasks, even for an experienced operator.

But life changed last year when Calrec released its suite of assistive apps for the iPad: Soccer Assist, Hockey Assist, and Fader Assist. Simply put, Soccer Assist made the mixing job much less physically challenging. It changes everything when you are following the play of the game because you only have to follow the action with your fingers on a tablet, not directly with the faders.

With the Soccer Assist app, we can put more mics in the field and control them more easily. When you move your finger on the tablet, you open the mics near the play. It’s more precise and more efficient than having to open numerous faders in order to open the mics. Simplifications and efficiencies like that have not only made the job much easier but have also improved the quality of the audio experience.

The main result that we wanted to achieve was to hear the exact moment when the ball is kicked—the action of the game—and the Soccer Assist app has made it much easier to do so.

COMPLEMENTARY PIECES
Soccer Assist complements other functions of our Artemis console, which helps us create a super-slick production. For instance, in order to minimize mic spill and room coloration, Calrec’s automixer keeps the signal clean when things get a little heated, like when the commentators scream too loud. The automixer is a great tool to help even out the audio levels at the moment of the mix.

In addition, Calrec’s Hydra2 network helps minimize cabling and subsequent noise floors, improving the quality of the audio. Hydra2 is an amazing feature because it helps us avoid running large, awkward snakes. Instead we simply put Hydra2 analog boxes on the field and on the off-tube commentators, and then connect the boxes to the desk with fiber. In this way the sound is cleaner and we have entire control of the boxes with the desk.

Calrec technology is a very important part of the broadcast chain at Televisa because it gives us the features and tools to produce programs with more creativity, innovation, and efficiency. We just have to imagine how we want to do it, and in Calrec we have the perfect vehicle for doing it faster and to a higher standard.

José Alfredo Alanis has been in the broadcast industry eight years, five of which have been with Televisa.
