                                <p>The Television Academy has announced the recipients of the 2025<sup> </sup><a href="https://www.televisionacademy.com/awards/engineering-emmys">Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Awards</a> honoring an individual, company or organization for developments in broadcast technology. The awards ceremony will be held Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Television Academy’s Saban Media Center in North Hollywood, California.</p><p>“Behind every unforgettable moment on screen is a breakthrough in science, technology or engineering,” said Cris Abrego, chair of the Television Academy. “These groundbreaking innovations transform the way stories are created, shared and experienced. We celebrate these Emmy winners for forever changing how we experience the magnificent power of television.”</p><p>“This year’s Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Awards acknowledge the wide range of technologies used in our industry to aid the storytelling process,” said Barry Zegel, co-chair of the Engineering, Science & Technology Committee.  “The award recipients represent a remarkable group of cutting-edge technologies that have advanced television production, safety and artistry in ways unfathomable when our industry began. In addition, we are recognizing the innovators responsible for remarkable production tools and setting standards that have revolutionized broadcast production and distribution.”</p><p>Added co-chair Wendy Aylsworth, “We also extend our hearty congratulations to Mark Schubin, who is receiving the Charles F. Jenkins Lifetime Achievement Award, and to BBC Research & Development on receiving the Philo T. Farnsworth Corporate Achievement Award. Jenkins Lifetime Achievement Award</strong></p><p>This award honors a living individual whose ongoing contributions have significantly affected the state of television technology and engineering.</p><p>This year's recipient is <strong>Mark Schubin</strong>.<strong> </strong></p><p>Mark Schubin (with a degree in chemical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology) has been in television since 1967, working on every aspect, including design, manufacturing, lighting, sound, camera, editing and distribution. His diverse projects have spanned the world on all seven continents, including Antarctica, from operas to the Olympics. He helped develop the broadcasting of the Metropolitan Opera (The Met) productions to cinemas and television stations around the world and has continued supporting this project for many years since its inception.</p><p>Mark refers to himself as an “Engineer and Explainer”: His non-judgmental — but humorous — communication of facts and arcane — but relevant — information is what endears him to creatives, business executives and technologists alike. This is why he has been the program chair of the HPA Tech Retreat since 1998, speaks frequently at events and seminars on a wide array of technical topics and on the history of television, and has been a member of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Engineering Awards committee for more than 30 years.</p><p>A prolific engineering historian, educator and professional writer, when Sports Video Group asked him to do so, he changed his more than 33-year-old monthly column on "Video Research" in <em>Videography </em>magazine into <em>SchubinCafe,</em> which is archived by the Library of Congress. Farnsworth Corporate Achievement Award</strong><br>This award honors an agency, company or institution whose contributions over time have significantly impacted television technology and engineering.</p><p>This year's recipient is <strong>BBC Research & Development</strong></p><p>BBC Research & Development has had a proud history of shaping how we watch and experience television as it focused on its public mission in support of broadcasting. Since its founding in 1930, the team has led the way in breakthroughs that became everyday essentials — like FM radio, stereo sound and the Radio Data System that sends song titles and traffic updates to car radios. Over the decades, they’ve been central to important advancements in television, playing a pivotal role in the development and standardization of High-Definition Television (HDTV), Ultra High-Definition Television (UHDTV), Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) for the carriage of High Dynamic Range (HDR) information and 5G networks. </p><p>Looking ahead, their work continues to help define the future of television in its research on Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). BBC Research & Development continues to lead and participate in the important industry collaboration on the impact and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). As co-founders of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, BBC Research & Development is also helping to create standards that will allow media creators to understand better human/AI collaboration and copyrightability of AI-generated media.                                 <p><strong>NEW YORK—</strong>The 71st Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards dinner is shifting its event originally planned to take place during the 2020 NAB Show in Las Vegas to the NAB Show New York event in the fall because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced.</p><p>The annual ceremony was scheduled to take place on April 19 in Las Vegas, helping to kickoff the NAB Show.</p><p>“In consultation with health officials, award recipients and other prospective attendees, we determined that it was no longer prudent nor viable to move forward with our ceremony,” said NATAS President & CEO Adam Sharp in a statement. “The NAB Show has been a wonderful home for the Tech Emmys, and we intend to reschedule the ceremony to correspond instead with NAB’s fall convention in New York.”</p><p>NATAS did say that it does plan to move forward with other upcoming events, including the Sports Emmy Awards on April 28 in New York; the Daytime Emmy Awards on June 12-14 in Pasadena, Calif., and the News & Documentary Emmy Awards in September in New York.</p><p>“We are closely monitoring public health authorities’ guidance, seeking feedback from our awards communities and evaluating the flexibility of our venue and production partners as we make determinations around these other events based on day-to-day developments,” Sharp added.</p><p>“In every case, the health and safety of our event attendees and staff will remain our paramount concern.                                 <p><strong>NEW YORK—</strong>The winners of the 71st annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards were announced Wednesday, Jan. 15, recognizing innovation and achievement in areas ranging from imaging sensor development to pioneering work on a public cloud-based media supply chain.</p><figure class="van-image-figure pull-" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="78AbNwKiCBHTSJrpZpUrER" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/78AbNwKiCBHTSJrpZpUrER.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/78AbNwKiCBHTSJrpZpUrER.jpg" align="" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class="pull-"></p></div></div></figure><p>The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) will honor this year’s recipients in partnership with the National Association of Broadcasters during the 2020 NAB Show at the Wynn Encore Hotel and Spa on April 19.</p><p>“The Technology & Engineering Emmy Award was the first Emmy Award issued in 1949, and it laid the groundwork for all the other Emmys to come,” said Adam Sharp, president and CEO of NATAS. “We are especially excited to be honoring Yvette Kanouff with our Lifetime Achievement Award in Technology & Engineering.”</p><p>Describing Kanouff as one of the “talented and innovative leaders” who has made “the incredible world of television possible,” Robert Seidel, chairman of the NATAS Technology & Engineering Achievement Committee, pointed out that she spearheaded “transformational technologies,” such as video on-demand, cloud DVR, digital and on-demand ads, streaming security and privacy. “The National academy is happy to be honoring her with our Lifetime Achievement Award in Technology,” he said</p><p>Winners of the 2020 Technical/Engineering Achievement Awards include:</p><ul><li><strong>Adobe</strong> for a pioneering system for live performance-based animation using facial recognition;</li><li><strong>Apple, Google, LG, Microsoft, Mozilla, Opera</strong> and <strong>Samsung</strong> for HTML5 development and deployment of a full TV experience on any device;</li><li><strong>AWS, Discovery, Evertz, Fox NE&O (Walt Disney Television)</strong> and <strong>SDVI</strong> for pioneering public cloud-based linear media supply chains;</li><li><strong>Sling TV, Sony PlayStation Vue</strong> and <strong>Zattoo</strong> for pioneering development of large scale, cloud-served, broadcast-quality linear channel transmission to consumers;</li><li><strong>Dell (Isilon), IBM, Masstech</strong> and <strong>Quantum</strong> for early development of HSM systems that create a pivotal improvement in broadcast workflows;</li><li><strong>Cable Labs</strong> for pioneering development and deployment of hybrid fiber coax network architecture;</li><li><strong>Bell Labs</strong> and <strong>Michael Tompsett</strong> for pioneering development of the CCD image sensor;</li><li><strong>AVI West, Dejero, LiveU</strong> and <strong>TVU Networks</strong> for VoCIP (video over bonded cellular internet);</li><li><strong>Canon</strong> and <strong>Flovel</strong> for ultra-high sensitivity HDTV camera; and</li><li><strong>ACL NetworX, Audinate, Audio Engineering Society, Keven Gross, QCS, Telos Alliance</strong> and <strong>Wheatstone</strong> for development of synchronized multichannel uncompressed audio transport over IP networks.</li></ul><p>The Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards honor a living individual, a company or a scientific or technical organization for developments and/or standardization involved in engineering technologies that either represent so extensive an improvement on existing methods or are so innovative in nature that they materially have affected television.</p><p>More information is available on the NATAS <a href="https://www.theemmys.tv" data-original-url="http://www.theemmys.tv">website</a>.</p>
