WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.—SMPTE today issued a call for technical papers for its 2026 Media Technology Summit, Nov. 16-19, at the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, Calif.

Organizers aim to offer the latest innovative processes, tools, workflows, interoperability solutions, standards and other initiatives driving the industry forward as relates to creation, management and delivery of media content.

Original, unpublished manuscripts aligning with these goals will undergo multi-peer review when submitted as abstracts. Abstracts should be 300 to 400 words and will be accepted until May 31.

SMPTE has also included a journal track that enables interested parties to submit full, publication-ready manuscripts that will automatically be considered for publication in the “SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal,” subject to a separate post-event peer-review process. Manuscripts must be 3,000 to 5,000 words and will be accepted until May 31.

The conference program committee will notify authors of its decisions by June 30. Authors of selected papers will be granted the opportunity to present at the summit.

Previously published, product-specific, commercial, sales or promotional papers will not be considered. The society also said it is encouraging students to submit papers.

IBC Technical Papers present unpublished technical disclosures of original, novel research and innovation focused on real-world challenges. At this initial stage, entrants are invited to submit a 300-word synopsis outlining the key topic, what is unique and novel about the work, and its practical relevance to the industry.

All submissions are rigorously reviewed by a panel of professional experts. Papers accepted for presentation at the IBC2026 Conference will be eligible for the Best Conference Paper Award, presented at the IBC2026 Awards.

Building on the 2025 Program
The 2025 edition demonstrated the extraordinary breadth of technologies influencing media. Topics ranged from facial recognition and machine learning in news to generative AI for targeted advertising, large-scale streaming to tens of millions of concurrent viewers, XR and neural radiance fields, advances in video coding, 5G field trials, and sustainability.

The coveted Best Technical Paper Award 2025 was presented to a Swiss-led team from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and HEIG-VD for their work “EBU NEO – A sophisticated multilingual chatbot for a trusted news ecosystem exploration”.

Selected alongside 22 other papers from 337 submissions, the winning paper was chosen by IBC’s international peer review panel of 20 experts. It highlighted both the promise and current limitations of AI in public-facing journalism, underlining the real-world impact that Technical Papers deliver.

LONDON—IBC has announced that it is now accepting submissions for Technical Papers for the IBC2025 Conference, which will be held from Sept. 12-15 in Amsterdam.

Organizers said the Technical Papers Program “offers an excellent opportunity for forward-thinking technologists and companies to unveil their ideas and research to media industry leaders hungry for new technology concepts, their possible uses and practical applications.”

“Unsurprisingly, AI was our most popular Technical Papers session at IBC2024—where we covered facial recognition, machine-learning in news and the iterative use of generative AI for targeted advertising,” Paul Entwistle, chair of IBC's Technical Papers Committee, said. “This was closely followed by our session on streaming, where the audience learnt how cricket was concurrently streamed to 59 million viewers in India. We also presented strong sessions covering XR including neural radiance fields, provenance and trust, 5G both technical advances and field trials, advances in video coding, and sustainability. LONDON—IBC is now accepting technical paper submissions for the IBC 2021 conference. Technical papers allow for technologists and companies to share their ideas and research to media industry leaders during the annual IBC Show.

Technical paper proposals from the media, entertainment and technology sectors will be accepted. The papers should present original, novel research on solutions to real world problems faced by the international broadcast and digital media industry and are non-commercial.

Among some of the topics that Dr. Paul Entwistle, chair of IBC’s Technical Papers Committee, says could be covered include AI/machine learning, the evolution of virtual and augmented reality, 5G, content security, fake news and sustainability.

“We are genuinely appreciative of the support the industry shows the Technical Papers program and look forward to continuing to showcase authors, whose work sits at the cutting-edge, challenges the norm or shares useful and practical insight,” said Dr. Entwistle.

The Technical Paper submission process is in its initial stage, which calls for 300-word synopses, including an overview of the topic, highlighting unique approaches and key background information. All submission will be reviewed by a panel of professional experts.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.—The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers have issued a call for technical papers for the 2020 SMPTE Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition, Nov. 9-12, at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites in Los Angeles.

The organization will use a new two-step submission and review process in an effort to enhance the quality of submissions and to increase the likelihood that selected presentations will be selected for publication in its Motion Imaging Journal, SMPTE said.

During the first phase of the new process, which runs until March 10, SMPTE will accept abstract submissions. The conference’s program committee will then review the submissions and by April 20 create a short list of works that have been preliminarily accepted. Authors will be notified after April 20.

The next phase runs from April 20 to July 10. During this time, authors of works on the preliminary acceptance list must submit full manuscripts for review. The SMPTE review committee will notify authors on or before Aug. 10 of their decisions.

All manuscripts also will be peer reviewed for possible publication in the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal.

"The SMPTE annual technical conference is an ideal venue in which to showcase research and exploration of the new and emerging technologies that will shape the motion-imaging industry—and the future of storytelling," said Sara Kudrle, SMPTE vice president of Education. "It's always exciting to dig into manuscript proposals for the upcoming conference, and we're eager to learn more about the work being done by academics, students, engineers, creatives and executives from across the industry."

SMPTE is seeking high-quality, informational papers that address technical theory, research, innovation, application or practice related to the evolving technologies associated with the media and entertainment industry, it said.

Preference will be given to what the organization describes as “forward-thinking proposals” and especially to research-based proposals addressing cutting-edge technologies.

Additionally, the program committee is seeking the perspective of the “next generation of engineers, technologies, storytellers and industry thought leaders,” SMPE said. Student papers are strongly encouraged. Promotional or commercially oriented papers will not be considered.

After the November conference, SMPTE will publish accepted manuscripts to the SMPTE Digital Library and a video of the presentation of each paper will be posted to the SMPTE YouTube channel, the organization said.

LOS ANGELES & WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.—If authors want to be considered to present a technical paper at the SMPTE 2018 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition, they have until May 28 to submit their proposals, according to an official announcement from SMPTE.

Proposed papers must be informational and address technical theory, research, innovation, application or practice specific to any evolving technology associated with the media and entertainment industry. Topics can include things like UHD and HDR; the future of media distribution; media infrastructure; cloud and virtualized media processing; future media technology; artificial intelligence; and many other areas. Commercial or promotional papers will not be considered, nor will be papers that have already been published.

Selected papers will have the opportunity to present at the 2018 conference. All selected papers will be determined by the program committee, which is co-chaired by Thomas Edwards, vice president and engineering at Fox, and SMPTE Education Director Sara J. Kudrle, product marketing manager for playout at Imagine Communications. Yvonne Thomas, product manager at Arvato Systems and SMPTE education director for conference programs, and Richard Welsh, co-founder and CEO of Sundog Media Toolkit and SMPTE Education vice president, will oversee the program committee.

Instructions on submitting proposals, as well as additional information, is available at smpte2018.org. SMPTE says that proposals submitted earlier than the May 28 deadline will help ensure consideration.

Final proposal selection and notification will occur no later than July 20. Electronic versions of the final technical manuscripts of selected papers will be due by Sept. 28.

SMPTE 2018 will take place from Oct. 23-25 at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites in downtown Los Angeles.

LONDON—The window for pitching technical pages synopses for IBC 2018 is officially open, per an announcement from the organization. Interested entrants will have until Feb. 5 to hand in their work for consideration.

IBC is changing how it presents its selected technical papers at this year’s conference. Instead of forming a single conference stream, the papers will be integrated into business and strategic presentations within specific themes throughout the conference. IBC believes that this will allow more attendees to hear about the new technologies discussed in the papers.

The papers can cover a range of topics, from machine learning to user psychology. All submissions are peer-reviewed by a panel of professional experts and will be published on IBC365. Papers accepted for presentation at the IBC conference will also eligible to win the Best Conference Paper Award, presented at the IBC Awards.

Proposals for both papers and posters should be a written synopsis that is roughly 300 words. Topics cover the latest technological innovations and thinking. IBC’s Technical Paper Committee will review and select all finalists, who will then write the full papers. Of the completed papers, one will be selected as the IBC Best Conference Paper Award; the 2015 winner was Andrew Cotton and Tim Borer of BBC Research & Development for their paper “A Display Independent High Dynamic Range Television System.”
