With accelerating technological changes and heightened viewer expectations, broadcast organizations face a pivotal decision: whether to prioritize scale or precision in selecting a systems integrator. Boutique integrators, with their targeted expertise and client-first ethos, have emerged as a strategic choice for projects demanding adaptability, innovation, and accountability.

A boutique integrator is a highly specialized partner that prioritizes selective, meaningful engagements over volume. These firms avoid the "one-size-fits-all" playbook, instead assembling teams of highly skilled in-house employees with deep, granular expertise in niche areas — whether it be in live sports production workflows, broadcast truck design, or legacy system modernization. Their model thrives on collaboration, reputational integrity, and solutions calibrated to each client’s unique operational DNA.

Boutique integrators deliver outsized value through specialization, responsiveness, and client-first principles. These traits ultimately enhance broadcasters' ability to adapt quickly to changing market demands while ensuring high-quality, customized solutions.

1. Cutting Through Complexity With Specialized Teams
Boutique integrators operate on a simple premise: mastery matters. Projects are led by professionals who have honed their skills within specific technical domains. For instance, these professionals understand not only the infrastructure challenges of large venues but also the logistical hurdles of live event timelines — from camera placement to real-time signal routing under pressure.

This specialization extends beyond technical proficiency. Teams develop an intimate familiarity with the unspoken demands of their niche, balancing budget constraints or meeting exacting standards. By aligning personnel to projects that match their expertise, boutique firms mitigate risk and accelerate execution.

The result is tailored problem-solving. Rather than forcing prepackaged systems, boutique integrators invest in understanding organizational goals. Such solutions emerge from dialogue, not templated proposals, ensuring they align precisely with client goals. This agnostic approach means boutique integrators aren't tied to pushing specific products, allowing for truly customized solutions.

2. Agility Rooted in Direct Relationships
Smaller organizational structures inherently foster agility. Without layers of bureaucracy, boutique integrators adapt swiftly to shifting priorities — whether recalibrating timelines or accommodating last-minute technical requests. In environments where last-second changes are routine, this flexibility ensures projects stay on track without compromising quality.

Direct access to decision-makers amplifies this responsiveness. Clients often have direct contact information for project team members, allowing for quick response times and immediate support. This transparency builds trust and accountability, as teams understand their work directly impacts the firm's reputation — its most important asset.

3. Reputation as the Ultimate Metric
Boutique integrators operate in a world where every project is a referendum on their credibility. Without the cushion of a large sales team, their growth hinges on client satisfaction. This dynamic creates a culture where excellence is nonnegotiable.

Reputation is cultivated through consistency and a focus on quality over revenue chasing. This philosophy contrasts sharply with larger integrators, where projects may be deprioritized based on revenue potential. Boutique integrators are passionate about delivering high-quality work, understanding that their reputation is their primary means of securing future business.

The emphasis on reputation also fosters long-term partnerships. Clients return because they value the reliability and pride of craftsmanship embedded in every deliverable. In short, clients get far more than just a vendor — they get a team that treats the client’s success as their own success.

4. Pioneering Innovation Through Shared Knowledge
Innovation at boutique integrators is a collaborative endeavor. Teams regularly share insights across projects, creating a feedback loop that accelerates learning. This often takes the form of regular team meetings where project insights are shared and collaborative problem-solving occurs across different projects.

This collective knowledge also fuels early adoption of emerging technologies. Boutique integrators often partner with manufacturers for beta testing of new products and systems. Clients benefit from access to cutting-edge solutions that are vetted through rigorous internal discussions and real-world application, balancing innovation with stability.

5. Growth Without Compromise
Scaling as a boutique integrator is an exercise in discipline. Growth is intentional, measured, and aligned with the firm’s core competencies. It's a common misconception that boutique integrators lack the resources to handle large, prestigious projects. In reality, their focused approach and efficient use of resources often allow them to tackle big jobs more effectively than larger integrators.

Rather than chasing revenue at all costs, these firms say “no” to projects outside their wheelhouse, preserving their ability to deliver exceptional results. This selectivity ensures teams aren’t stretched thin. By avoiding overcommitment, boutique integrators maintain the focus required for complex builds, ensuring timelines and budgets remain intact.

Client-Centric Evolution in a Dynamic Industry
The broadcast industry’s future belongs to organizations that balance innovation with executional discipline. Boutique integrators exemplify this balance, offering surgical expertise alongside operational flexibility. Their model — built on specialization, accountability, and relentless attention to quality — transforms technical challenges into opportunities for innovation.

For broadcasters navigating an era of disruption, boutique partnerships provide more than just technical solutions; they offer a strategic alliance with a team invested in the broadcaster’s long-term success rather than a mere transactional relationship. In choosing a boutique integrator, clients are gaining a partner whose reputation is inextricably tied to their own.

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J.—Systems integrator DNAV has launched a broadcast monitoring service that remotely connects its field services team to broadcast facilities via the company’s self-architected cloud-based network operations center (NOC).

The D-NOC will provide 24/7 insight into the health and status of a broadcaster’s TV and/or radio operation via internet-protocol connection with all recommended hardware and software in the technology ecosystem, the company said.

DNAV offers tiered options with flexible parameters that can pair its regional field service representatives with a broadcaster’s existing in-house resources.

For example, one broadcaster can assign DNAV’s remote resources to monitor and analyze performance of master control operations and all related media workflows, including program ingest and playout automation, while another can rely on DNAV to oversee transmission to ensure transmitters are making licensed TPO and antenna systems maintain proper VSWR levels, the company said.

DNAV also offers resources to monitor STL connections (radio frequency and IP) and drill down to RF transmission components that can cause shorts in the transmission feed line, it said.

Broadcasters can also outsource most or all responsibilities to DNAV for complete oversight of performance from origination to transmission, including all command-and-control functions that bring the entire media ecosystem together. That is extensible to broadcast networks and station groups with hundreds of interconnected locations across North America and beyond.

“Every broadcast operation and facility workflow has its unique characteristics and every customer has a preference when it comes to the mix of technologies,” Daniel Hyatt, principal at DNAV, said. “That means offering a monitoring service that is customizable to the broadcaster’s pertinent needs. We are looking at each customer’s challenges, listening to their requests, learning their requirements and building solutions that effectively achieves their goals.”

Those goals can be as diverse as improving quality, ensuring greater on-air uptime or supplementing an existing in-house or third-party maintenance service with limited capabilities or service-level agreements, he said.

“We work with a lot of customers that have a certain level of support for a purchased system,” Hyatt said. “This is often surface-level support, which can be problematic in an area such as automation that is touching so many other parts of the media workflow. We bring the ability to engage with an existing support system and bring multiple vendors and services together to rapidly resolve a problem.”

DNAV regional field services team across North America can effectively “articulate the issues and dive into multiple related systems” to troubleshoot across the spectrum, DNAV principal Nick Straka said.

“We approach this from a proactive solutions perspective,” Straka said. “That extends beyond immediate problems and the ‘fire-drill’ approach to broadcast engineering. We are looking at performance trends, proactively spotting issues and enacting a troubleshooting plan to reconcile problems in advance.”

DNAV’s team can also drill deeper into the IT network infrastructure and other IP-connected systems, such as building control systems for lighting, HVAC and plant operations.

More information is available on the company’s website.

Editor's note: This article originally appeared on our sister brand Systems Contractor News.

It’s been three (long) years since the last NAB Show in Las Vegas. In this interview with SCN, Chris Brown, executive vice president and managing director of NAB Global Connections and Events, shared his thoughts on what changes attendees can expect and what topics will be generating buzz on the show floor.

SCN: Since no one expects the 2022 NAB Show to break attendance records, how will you define success for this year’s event?
Chris Brown: Registration numbers are picking up rapidly, but the NAB Show has always been about so much more than metrics. It is in many ways about setting a tone for the industry and helping to point the way to new opportunities. It is about getting re-energized around the creativity and business opportunities in media and entertainment.

It’s an exciting business and the NAB Show community is highly passionate about what they do. This is their opportunity to come together to see, feel, touch, soak in the industry—maybe above all to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. There is nothing like it. So, in some respects the victory will be in just being able to produce the show, bring the industry together, and help inspire forward progress.

We are confident the show will bring the right people together—those who are coming to do business and engage in true knowledge exchange, and those who are on a mission and serious about their visit and ready to get things done. This by itself could make this one of the most productive shows in recent history, with a higher buyer-to-seller ratio than we would see in a typical year.

SCN: What will be different for returning attendees?
CB: Among the big changes are a new schedule, new convention hall, new featured exhibit category, and perhaps most importantly, a brand-new way of organizing the entire show.

We will be opening the show on Sunday for the first time—versus the traditional Monday opening. And we will be closing on Wednesday instead of Thursday. This change is being implemented to make it easier for those involved in live and other studio production projects, as well as those who may find it difficult to get away during the week or want to minimize time away from work. The idea was driven by feedback received in the past, and we expect this will open a path to stronger overall attendance for the show.

The layout of the show will also be different. The exposition and educational programs will still be spread across three buildings at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC), but this year we will be adding the LVCC’s new West Hall (and dropping the South Hall). A state-of-the-art facility, the new West Hall totally changes the whole look and feel of the LVCC campus.

LVCC West Hall (Image credit: 22 Miles)

In keeping with that state-of-the art theme, we have placed some of the more leading-edge categories in the West Hall. Specifically, we will be launching a new featured exhibit area here—dubbed "Intelligent Content." With the enormous influence that data and new data-driven technologies are having on every aspect of content creation and distribution, we felt it was time to place the spotlight on this trend.

I think you will see a great deal of focus on tech that drives remote workflows.

Chris Brown, NAB

The area will feature a strong lineup of anchor exhibitors, including Microsoft, AWS, and Mediakind. The focus will be on everything from employing data to drive more personalized content experiences, to advanced advertising technology to AI, blockchain, and the evolution to the Metaverse. Other feature areas in the West Hall include Connected Media IP and the Future of Delivery areas.

Layered over all of this is perhaps the biggest change we have implemented in quite a while. The show will now be organized around three major content pillars—Create, Connect, and Capitalize. These three pillars reflect how the industry works, and organizing the show around these concepts will help every attendee navigate the show and find what is most relevant to them. The idea is to help everyone maximize their time.

From a physical space perspective, Create will be featured in the Central Hall and part of the North Hall, Connect will be the focus in the new West Hall, while Capitalize will find its home in the North Hall. Our conference programming has been reorganized around these three pillars as well, and will include a mix of legacy programs, such as the Broadcast Engineering and IT Conference, and new elements.

To further curate the experience for every visitor, we have created unique Experiential Zones tied to each of the pillars that will help bring focus to the key trends that are relevant to each area. These hubs—two in each hall—will provide a variety of engagement opportunities for visitors, from theaters running daily education content to hands-on demonstrations to startup displays and unique networking forums.

With respect to the latter, we are introducing a series of roundtable discussions in the Experiential Zones that will provide great networking and the opportunity to dive deep on key industry topics with peers.

We are also introducing NABiQ, an “idea hackathon,” which is designed as a variation on the traditional hackathon, with the objective in this case to “build” a new idea. Groups of peers will be matched up in a competition to see who can create the next great idea in helping solve for a pre-determined technology or industry issue. Winners in each of the three pillar categories will be selected. These should be fun, and we expect they will yield some terrific new ideas that can be shared with the entire industry.

SCN: What topics are shaping up to be the buzz at this year’s show?
CB: Obviously, we think data is a huge driver for the industry in many ways, and that is why we have introduced the new Intelligent Content area. Covered in this will be a range of buzz-worthy technologies, including AI machine learning and what it can do to create efficiency in various sides of the content creation funnel, whether capture, editing, distribution, you name it. You will also see tech that is enabling content creators to build more personalized experiences for audiences and develop new business models to capitalize on this engagement.

Beyond this, I think you will see a great deal of focus on tech that drives remote workflows. The whole move to virtual production has been greatly accelerated by the pandemic, and the industry has shown that there are effective and efficient ways to produce remotely. A number of our major anchor exhibitors, including Ross, Grass Valley, and Vizrt, have adapted quickly around this trend, and will be must-see stops for those looking to explore the possibilities in remote production.

The metaverse is also definitely going to be a topic of conversation throughout the show, not only in terms of debate around what that actually looks like, but just in looking at the technologies that are already underpinned by a mix of reality and augmented reality.

There will be plenty of virtual and mixed reality set technology on display, and the show will feature a number of specific demonstrations in the Experience Zones tied to these developments. These will include a unique mixed reality demo developed by ARRI in the Create area (Central Hall), and an AI-driven demo by Microsoft in the Intelligent Content area (West Hall).

SCN: Beyond the typical exhibit hall exploration, what will be some of the main attractions for systems integrators attending the show?
CB: Systems integrators should plan on investing time in the various zones to discover how technology solution providers are working collaboratively and building interoperable workflows in the areas of ATSC 3.0, virtual production and IP. All the education on the show floor is, of course, free for anyone to attend. So, it is really a great way to gain some broader perspective before diving into specific conversations with vendors on the show floor.

For more information on the 2022 NAB Show, April 23-27, visit nabshow.com/2022/.

KENILWORTH, N.J. and NORCROSS, GA.—Systems integrator Diversified today announced the acquisition of Atlanta-based Technical Innovation. The geographic footprint and service offering of both organizations is “significantly expanded” by the acquisition, Diversified said. The TI staff will continue to serve its customers.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The expanded company said it will offer “a broader spectrum of technology and media solutions backed by more 800 employees in 22 offices across the United States,” with combined revenues of $450 million. Diversified alone has 300-plus employees in 13 offices, with more than $200 million in revenue last year and a client base that is 65 percent comprised of Fortune 1000 companies—all according to the Diversified Website.

The site also says Diversified has completed 6,590 projects in 20 years. Projects include an upgrade for Facebook London, a new West Coast headquarters and newsroom for NBCUniversal, a studio upgrade for Revolt TV and the 25,000-square-foot digital HD billboard in Times Square, among many others.

TI clients range from the Polk County Sheriff Department to Duke Energy. The contractor’s projects included a facility design for NBC affiliate KXAS in Dallas that included three HD production control rooms, four new studios, and a 4,000 square-foot data center, enabling KXAS to handle six program streams, including NBC 5, Cozi TV, Telemundo 39, Exitos, and mobile DTV, according to TI’s Website.

Mike Landrum, CEO of Technical Innovation, will integrate the Technical Innovation team members and offices into Diversified’s operations. He will report to Diversified CEO Fred D’Alessandro.

Landrum said joining forces with Diversified “... allows us to continue to evolve with the most sophisticated and forward-thinking solutions driving businesses today.”

D’Alessandro said the merger was “born of thoughtful and careful planning.”

“We have respected Technical Innovation for many years, and we know that the culture of our organizations complement each other,” he said. “This acquisition enables Diversified to build and expand our technology and media centric services by leveraging their many years in business focused on command and control, audio-visual, broadcast and unified communication solutions.

“This acquisition provides our collective client base with the resources and expertise required for new IT-centric solutions, of any complexity and scale across the globe.”

Both companies were ranked a top five systems integrator for 2015 by TV Technology sister franchise, Systems Contractor News, Diversified said.

PHILADELPHIA—Pope Francis’ historic visit to the U.S. is making non-stop headlines. Much of the population has been captivated by his genial personality and thoughtful message, but some are working behind the scenes to ensure that television coverage captures the important moments of this tour.

One of the companies charged with making sure we get to see the Pope is RGB Broadcast Video Services in Philadelphia, which was responsible for installing a complex camera system in that city’s Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. Broadcast Engineering Extra had a chance to talk to Joe Pagano, CEO and chief engineer of RGB Broadcast, to better understand how a company assembles a television system fit for a Pope.

Joe Pagano, CEO of RGB Broadcast, adjusts a Panasonic AW-HE130 camera in the Basilica. (All photos by KYW-TV photographer Joe Garvin)

BE Extra: What sort of work does RGB Broadcast do? What are a couple other large projects that you’ve done?

Pagano: We’re a broadcast equipment repair center and installation company. We even do work on helicopters. We’ve been involved with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia for more than 15 years, doing video engineering and planning special projects. We moved Merck Pharmaceuticals video systems from one building to another and we also do frequent work for US Helicopters, which outfits choppers for broadcasters.

BE Extra: How did you get the contract to install the systems in the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul?

Pagano: Our longstanding commitment here gave the Archdiocese confidence in our abilities, so they came straight to us. An unnamed donor actually gave the funds for the project, and that made it possible for us to do the work.

BE Extra: How long did it take to get the job installed and functioning? What were a couple of the tricky or unexpected things that you had to deal with?

Monitors were installed throughout the sanctuary to provide views of the altar.

Pagano: About three months, because of the age of the building. Working in a 200-year old building, the cable paths were all old brick and mortar. It took my 30 years’ of experience to figure out ways to install and cable the gear. Core drilling, running cables behind trim – lots of tricky things to do on this project without disturbing the aesthetics of the building.

BE Extra: What are a couple of the important equipment items that you installed? Why did you decide on those items?

Pagano: We decided to go with Panasonic broadcast-grade cameras because they fit the budget and far exceeded the necessary specs. We used six AW-HE130 cameras, which are HD-SDI, and we also had AW-HE870 cameras on pan/tilt heads with 20x Fujinon lenses. Pretty much everything is wired up for HD-SDI in 1080i format. The HE130 cameras have built-in 20x zoom lenses, which are good. The Fujinon 20x lenses on the HE870 cameras are a little brighter.

RGB Broadcast fabricated a full master control in the upper sanctuary of the Basilica. The switcher is a NewTek 800 series, with Blackmagic Design 20 x 20 routers. Monitoring goes through a Blackmagic 16-input multiviewer. This gear fit the budget and provides excellent video.

Two Panasonic AW-HE870 cameras with 20x Fujinon lenses were installed on pan/tilt heads to capture the coverage in 1080i HD.

We used Belden 1794A cable throughout the system. It fit the budget and provides great signal characteristics. We used about 2,500 feet of 1794A on the project, and we also used Belden HD connectors. We evaluated the cable and connectors in advance of the project and determined it was the right product for us.

BE Extra: Audio can be particularly difficult in big cathedrals. How are you acquiring and handling the audio?

Pagano: Audio in master control goes through a Soundcraft audio board, which is fed from the house sound system. House sound has independent feeds from the altar, choir locations and elsewhere throughout the Basilica. There are probably 23 mic sources that feed the Soundcraft board.

BE Extra: How does the signal get out of the Basilica?

Pagano: It leaves from the rear of the building at an interface panel for truck connection. There are program feeds, tie lines, clean feeds from individual cameras, intercom feeds and other sources. We will feed two trucks for sure, and have capacity for six more.

BE Extra: What happens to all the gear once the Pope leaves? How long do you expect teardown to take?

Master Control for the project uses a NewTek switcher, Soundcraft mixer, and Blackmagic Design routers and camera monitors.

Pagano: All the gear is permanent. It was done specifically for the Pope’s visit, but it upgrades an existing SD system that RGB Broadcast installed 12 years ago. This new gear replaces all that old gear. The Basilica documents and archives special funerals, ordinations and other events, some of which are televised. That’s why they wanted the upgrade.

BE Extra: Do you have any important takeaways from this project? Did you learn anything new?

Pagano: After 30 years in the business, you always learn something new. On this project, you can always teach an old dog new tricks. In this case, there were new things about the HD cameras and cabling that impressed me. Just keeping an open mind is part of a successful installation.
