CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Studio Technologies said the Harvard University athletics department has integrated Dante-enabled equipment from the vendor into its broadcast productions.

The solutions include the Model 204 and Model 205 Announcer’s Consoles, Model 5205 Mic/Line to Dante Interface and Model 5422A Dante Intercom Audio Engine. The products from Studio Technologies are used to produce approximately 325 live broadcasts annually, covering home games for 40 of its 42 varsity teams.

In recent years, Harvard Athletics has centralized its production operations, shifting from on-site setups to a remote production model. Two central control rooms, located at the basketball and hockey facilities, now manage nearly all Harvard sports broadcasts.

This shift has been aided by implementing Studio Technologies’ Dante-enabled audio equipment, including the Model 204 and Model 205 Announcer’s Consoles. These devices allow commentators to seamlessly connect from any location on campus, utilizing the university’s robust, unified network infrastructure, Studio Technologies said.

“In the past, setting up for a swim meet or any other event required transporting massive amounts of gear to the site,” said Imry Halevi, senior associate director of athletics. “Now, with Studio Technologies’ Dante-enabled commentator stations, we simply plug in and everything integrates effortlessly. Whether it’s fencing, volleyball, or football, the system is flexible and reliable.”

A key improvement in Harvard’s setup has been the introduction of Studio Technologies’ Model 5205, which provides microphones with both phantom power and conversion to Dante digital. This eliminates previous challenges associated with capturing ambient audio, including allowing remote gain adjustments via Studio Technologies’ STcontroller software.

“We used to have to send someone to manually adjust mixers on-site,” Halevi added. “Now we can do it remotely, saving time and effort.”

Harvard has also enhanced its communication capabilities with Studio Technologies’ beltpacks and intercom solutions, enabling seamless communication between directors, camera operators, and commentators. The adoption of the Model 5422A for both intercom support as well as serving as a Dante leader clock has resolved previous network stability issues, further streamlining operations.

In addition to sports like football, basketball and hockey, Harvard also produces broadcasts for lesser-covered sports such as skiing, sailing, water polo and fencing. The university has built dedicated commentary booths featuring Studio Technologies equipment, allowing commentators to provide coverage remotely. These efforts have helped Harvard expand its reach and engagement, particularly with alumni and prospective students, the company said.

Harvard’s broadcasts are available on ESPN+ as part of the Ivy League’s agreement with the network, with select broadcasts on New England Sports Network (NESN), a Boston-based regional sports network. The athletic department has also experimented with innovative formats, such as a social media-focused vertical broadcasts for tennis, leveraging Studio Technologies’ Dante audio solutions for a smoother production experience.

“Our mission is to tell the stories of our student-athletes and coaches, and high-quality broadcasts are a big part of that,” Halevi said. “Studio Technologies’ solutions have been instrumental in helping us maintain excellence within our budget constraints.”

TULSA, Okla.–Winnercomm, a well-respected production company, along with sister company Major League Fishing, the world’s premier tournament-fishing organization, recently collaborated to unveil a state-of-the-art in-house studio and control room.

Since 1981, Winnercomm has been at the forefront of providing content across all media platforms. It has a distinguished track record of delivering top-tier content to a diverse range of clients, earning 16 Emmy Awards as a result. Winnercomm produces Major League Fishing’s TV shows, which air on a variety of platforms including the Outdoor Channel, World Fishing Network, and Discovery Channel.

As a senior engineer at Winnercomm—where we previously leased a studio and relied on a remote truck as a control room—I knew that our increased production needs required us to build our own production and editing spaces.

The New Production Studio
We now have a dedicated studio and control room at Winnercomm’s facilities in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This transition marks a significant milestone, bringing Major League Fishing’s production operations back in-house.

Our new facility includes a selection of audio and video equipment with extensive Avid editing capabilities. This includes two complete Pro Tools suites for audio sweetening, VO’s, etc. Additionally, we have several Dante-compatible solutions from Studio Technologies that deliver pristine digital audio, including Model 372A beltpacks, Model 203 announcer boxes, and various intercom stations including the Model 348, Model 5304, and two Model 5312. We also have two Model 5422A Dante Intercom Audio Engines as the core of our comms system.

I have had a lot of great experiences with Studio Technologies gear in the past so when it came time to equip our studio and control room, they were at the top of my list. The company’s digital audio solutions, particularly those with Dante capabilities, offered solid reliability and were easy to integrate.

These features made the Studio Technologies solutions a must have on my equipment list. The products we’ve deployed are delivering pristine digital audio, with little interference or distortion. This level of quality is essential for our live broadcasts, which now number over 80 events per year, with audiences across multiple networks and streaming platforms.

Beltpacks and Consoles
The Studio Technologies Model 372A Intercom Beltpack is a highly compact user-worn device that combines a single channel of talk audio and two channels of comms or program listen. The Model 203 Announcer’s Console, which supports Dante Audio-over-Ethernet (AoE), offers simple deployment and the audio resources needed to directly support a complete professional on-air position. The Model 348 Intercom Station is a tabletop unit that provides eight independent talk and listen channels designed to serve as an audio control center for production and support personnel.

The Model 5304 Intercom Station is also a desktop unit that provides four independent talk and listen channels that are compatible with Dante audio-over-Ethernet networks. The Model 5312 Intercom Station is a rackmounted unit that is designed to serve as an audio control center for production and support personnel, and the Model 5422A Dante Intercom Audio Engine is a high-performance, cost-effective solution for creating party-line (PL) intercom circuits when used with Dante-compatible products.

More information can be found at https://studio-tech.com/.

SKOKIE, Ill.—The audio, video, and fiber-optic solutions provider Studio Technologies has announced the release of its new Model 214A, 215A, and 216A Announcer’s Consoles. The three units are designed to serve as the audio control center for announcers, commentators, and production personnel.

The Model 214A, 215A, and 216A incorporate upgraded capability and performance while maintaining compatibility with the well-regarded Model 214, 215 and 216 products. The new units continue to offer excellent audio performance while enhancing reliability and supporting configurations of all features using the STcontroller software application. In addition, the VenueView real-time monitoring features of STcontroller are also supported, the company said.

Studio Technologies said that the Model 214A, 215A, and 216A Announcer’s Consoles are suitable for numerous applications including on-air television sports broadcasting, stadium announcement, and corporate AV. All three consoles are compatible with broadcast and audio system environments that utilize Dante audio-over-Ethernet technology. An Ethernet connection with Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) is all that’s required to make a Model 214A, 215A, or 216A part of a sophisticated, networked audio system. Add a microphone and pair of headphones (or a broadcast headset) and the installation is complete. Whether it’s the on-air audio, the talkback audio, or the headphone cue feed, superior audio quality is always maintained.

“We are excited to introduce these upgraded announcer’s consoles,” says Gordon Kapes, president of Studio Technologies. “Using the STcontroller software application, an enhanced range of configuration choices allow the desired operating parameters to be easily selected. While flexible to configure, the user is presented with an easy-to-understand set of controls and indicators. Audio performance continues to be excellent and suitable for virtually any event.”

The Model 214A’s two pushbutton switches, Model 215A’s three pushbutton switches, and Model 216A’s four pushbutton switches allow the user to control the main and talkback audio output channels. On all models, one pushbutton switch controls the status of the Dante main transmitter (output) channel. This is the audio channel intended for on-air, announcement, or other primary uses. The Model 214A, 215A, and 216A’s pushbutton switches utilize gold-plated contacts for reliable long-term operation and include backlighting using white LEDs. Three rotary controls allow the user to adjust the content and level of the 2-channel headphone output. The Model 216A can also serve as a 4-channel IFB (interrupted foldback or talent cueing) main station for remote production (REMI) applications. That unit will integrate all on-air, talkback, and cue audio signal routing in one compact package, the company said.

Available free of charge from Studio Technologies, the STcontroller software application allows production personnel to quickly and easily configure the capabilities of the Model 214A, 215A, and 216A to meet an application’s exact needs. STcontroller is offered in versions that are compatible with the WinOS® and macOS operating systems.

More information is available at studio-tech.com.

SKOKIE, Ill.—Studio Technologies will debut its Model 5312 Intercom Station during IBC 2023, Sept. 15-18, at the RAI Amsterdam.

The company, which will exhibit with Nixer Pro Audio, has designed the Model 5312 Intercom Station with support for 12 independent talk and listen channels. It supports Dante audio-over-Ethernet network technology, the company said.

The rack mount unit, serves as an audio control center for production and support personnel in various applications, including live TV sports and news, live event production, theater, industrial, aerospace and corporate AV, it said.

Simple to use locally or as part of a REMI workflow, Model 5312 can create monitor mixes from its 12 input channels, making it well-suited for listen-only applications, Studio Technologies said.

A 5-pin female XLR connector located on the unit’s front panel allows traditional pro headsets with dynamic or electret (DC powered) microphones to be used. A Studio Technologies GME-3-12 gooseneck microphone can be directly connected using the ¼-inch jack assembly that is also located on the front panel. A low-noise microphone preamplifier and associated voltage-controlled-amplifier (VCA) dynamics controller (compressor) circuit ensures excellent headset and gooseneck microphone audio quality while minimizing the chance of signal overload, it said.

The Model 5312 includes 12 Dante transmitter (output) channels for “talk” and 12 receiver (input) channels for “listen.” In addition, the unit provides a "hot mic" transmitter (output) channel and four auxiliary receiver (input) channels. One of these inputs can be used as the talk audio source, the company said.

Studio Technologies included these resources in the design to enable two Model 5312 units to be used together to support more than 12 talk channels. A graphics display and five pushbutton switches on the unit's front panel allow users to select the active talk audio source, including the headset mic, the gooseneck mic and one of the auxiliary Dante receiver (input) channels, it said.

“We look forward to officially introducing the Model 5312 at IBC 2023,” said Gordon Kapes, president of Studio Technologies. “One of the great features of the Model 5312 is that over a standard Ethernet network it can help create a wide range of party-line (PL) intercom applications. It can be used with the many Studio Technologies’ PL and related devices and is directly compatible with the Model 5421 and Model 5422A Dante Intercom Audio Engine products. Model 5312 units can also be used ‘point-to-point’ or interfaced with Dante-compatible matrix intercom systems.”

More information is available on the company’s website.

See Studio Technologies at IBC 2023 Stand 8.F93.

Communications systems have always been a necessity in broadcasting but, often, they were something that was almost taken for granted. But this year’s NAB Show gave a major platform to new intercom technologies and products.

Many of the big technological trends and fashions in broadcasting do not always cover all the technical aspects of acquisition and production. The spotlight at most NAB Shows over the last decade has been firmly on 4K, HDR and location to post-production workflows.

With the possible exception of the last of those, that focus has excluded intercom but this always important, sometimes overlooked area is now fully on trend thanks to the high profile of the cloud, virtualization and remote operations at the major broadcast technology exhibitions of the last few years.

That was certainly the case at this year’s Vegas gathering, where Remote Integration (REMI) based on IP—and increasingly involving the cloud and virtualized systems—was addressed by the main intercom manufacturers.

Bridging Old with the New
“People continue to look for new ways to communicate,” said Kris Koch, business development director for Broadcast Network and Media Production at Clear-Com. “In particular, REMI workflows were a common topic at NAB. Our customers require us to be flexible in supporting their workflow, whatever that may be. Often we need to bridge older technologies with new IP based workflows, so while AoIP [audio over IP] has become something of a standard in new designs, most customers need to transition into IP workflows.”

Clear-Com’s Arcadia Central Station received particular attention this year—the IP-based communications platform is scalable and can integrate components from the company’s HelixNet, FreeSpeak and Encore ranges, as well as third party Dante AoIP devices, to provide communications for fly-away systems and OB trucks. Also on show were new features for the Eclipse HX digital matrix, including Dynam-EC real time production software and V-Series Iris IP-based user panels.

Telos Alliance made the brave—or foolhardy—decision to give live demonstrations of its Infinity Virtual Intercom Platform (VIP), linked together with other AoIP products from the company’s portfolio, plus telephony devices, on what Martin Dyster, vice president of business development, described as “one big LAN”.

Martin Dyster (Image credit: Telos Alliance)

He acknowledges that it was a “bit of a leap of faith” to stage such a demo at a trade show but that the company wanted to illustrate how a hardware system could be virtualised in software and deployed on a computer or mobile phone with built-in audio, including a USB microphone and loudspeaker.

Telos VIP is now featured as part of other companies’ cloud infrastructures, including Grass Valley AMPP (Agile Media Processing Platform), Vizrt’s Viz Now and the Panasonic KAIROS IT/IP system.

“It has found favor from some big hitters that have built end-to-end virtual platforms using a SaaS [software as a service] model,” explains Dyster. “VIP doesn’t need a lot of bandwith, it can work as a four-wire intercom for both on-prem and cloud with about 32 Kbps in each direction.” He adds that the audio quality produced has now led to customers wanting to use the system for both contribution links and voice-overs.

Matrix Advances
Intracom Systems’ VCOM virtual matrix is another software-based communications platform aimed at both on-premises and in-cloud implementation. During the NAB Show, the company highlighted v7 of the system, which included new features for selecting talk and listen keys, which can now also be activated using Elgato’s Stream Deck control interface, and managing user access using Single Sign On (SSO).

Intracom chief executive Stephen Brand observes that in the current “crowded intercom field,” broadcast customers are looking for features, functions and overall technologies that will “save them money, simplify workflows and keep them ahead of the curve in a highly competitive environment where pristine communications are critical.”

AEQ Xpeak (Image credit: AEQ)

AEQ has taken a matrix-less approach with its Xpeak system. This cloud-based intercom is particularly aimed at live and remote production applications, with Sales Director Gustavo Robles adding that REMI is now a “major trend in the market.” New from AEQ this year was the TP9116 rack-mounted intercom panel, featuring 16 four-way lever keys, with two functions on each lever, and IP connectivity over either Dante or AES67. Robles said a desktop version could be available by IBC.

Riedel Communications launched its Audio Monitoring App (AMA) for the 1200 SmartPanels range at the show. Product Manager Kristina Uhlitz comments that this is capable of running “several apps simultaneously” and attracted interest from many of the visitors to the company’s booth.

Also introduced were the Dante UIC card for the Artist system and new firmware for Bolero and its integrated charging station. “It provides visual data of registration and charging status and lets you upgrade all devices in the charger at once,” she added.

RTS DSPK-4 product line (Image credit: RTS)

RTS introduced the DSPK-4 digital speaker station, part of the RTS Digital Partyline intercom range. Also new was the Model 342 intercom station, which can be used in multiple modes with a Dante audio matrix or as a point-to-point system involving two units.

Pliant Technologies continued to fly the flag for wireless-based intercom and debuted a new IP-rated radio transceiver for its CrewCom range. Available in both 900MHz and 2.4GHz versions, these are aimed at live broadcast and events where outdoor placement of transceivers is necessary.

Pliant Technologies' IP-rated radio transceiver for its CrewCom range (Image credit: Pliant Technologies)

Also on the booth was the new CCU-08 CrewCom control unit, which allows operators to use up to eight four-wire ports and provides the same features as the existing CCU-22 and CCU-44. Gary Rosen, vice president of global sales said there was still interest in wireless communications and while the cloud and AoIP have found favor for remote production, when it came to on-site installations “a dedicated and reliable intercom system remains key for most users.”

Whatever the connectivity medium, intercoms certainly showed significant advances at the 2023 NAB Show.

SKOKIE, Ill.—Studio Technologies has unveiled the Model 545DC and Model 545DR intercom interfaces, which allow users to use analog party-line (PL) intercom circuits with contemporary Dante audio-over-Ethernet (AoE) applications.

The new intercoms will be shown at the 2023 NAB Show between April 15 to 19.

“Analog party-line (PL) intercom remains a staple of broadcast, theater and industrial workflows, creating a need for seamless integration into modern Dante applications,” said Gordon Kapes, president of Studio Technologies. “Our enhanced, intercom interfaces ensure that analog PL applications can become part of contemporary Dante-based applications. The supported audio quality is excellent, ensuring that all users are provided with effective intercommunications.”

The Model 545DC supports two single-channel PL intercom circuits and is directly compatible with single-channel analog party-line (PL) products from Clear-Com. The Model 545DR offers one 2-channel interface and works directly with the RTS TW-series of 2-channel analog intercom circuits. Both can interconnect with Dante-supported devices. The interfaces are also compatible with Studio Technologies’ line of Dante-enabled user beltpack, intercom station and intercom audio engine products.

The Model 545DC is designed for use with single-channel analog party-line (PL) intercom circuits. The Model 545DR is intended for use in applications, typically broadcast, that provide two-channels of analog PL on a single 3-conductor cable. High-frequency call signals are combined with voice audio and are supported by the Model 545DR. Each interface is capable of providing DC power, allowing direct connection of a limited number of analog PL user devices, the company said.

Both the Model 545DC and Model 545DR can be powered by a Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) connection or an external source of 12 volts DC. An etherCON RJ45 jack is used to interface the units with a 100 MB/sec Ethernet signal, it said.

Standard 3-conductor XLR connectors allow the analog party-line (PL) intercom circuits to be directly interconnected. For assistance during installation and troubleshooting, both the Model 545DC and Model 545DR contain two sets of 5-segment LED level meters. Each set of two meters displays the level of signals being sent to and received from their associated party-line interface channel. Each unit has two analog hybrid functions that separate the PL intercom circuits’ send and receive audio channels. The software-controlled hybrid circuits provide high return loss and excellent audio quality, it said.

The Model 545DC and Model 545DR operating parameters are configured using the STcontroller software application. Available free of charge from Studio Technologies, STcontroller allows production personnel to quickly and easily configure the unit’s capabilities to meet an application’s exact needs. STcontroller is offered in versions that are compatible with the WinOS and macOS operating systems, the company said.

More information is available on the company’s website.

SKOKIE, Ill.—Studio Technologies, a manufacturer of audio, video, and fiber-optic solutions, has introduced the Model 342 Intercom Station, a two-channel intercom user station that supports Dante Audio-over-Ethernet (AoE) workflows.

The compact, desktop device integrates seamlessly with other Studio Technologies Dante-based intercom system products to create flexible and great-sounding intercom resources, the company reported.

The Model 342 is designed to be used in a variety of broadcast and live events, including education, theater, sports, entertainment, house-of-worship, corporate, and aerospace applications.

“The Model 342 provides a desktop solution for intercom applications that can benefit from two channels of talk and listen,” says Gordon Kapes, president of Studio Technologies. “Directly compatible with other Studio Technologies Dante intercom products, the units seamlessly work together and benefit from advanced performance and flexibility. The Model 342’s range of capabilities and ease of deployment, along with excellent audio quality, offers users a unique experience.”

Data and power for the Model 342 requires only a standard Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) network connection. Hardware features include a dual-channel (stereo) headphone output, two headset connectors, integrated sidetone support, call signal receive display, and remote mic kill (“talk off”). With both 5-pin XLR and 3.5 mm TRRS headset connectors, the Model 342 is compatible with professional broadcast headsets, gaming headsets, and mobile phone earbuds. The microphone input circuitry supports both dynamic or electret microphones. The unit’s two LED-illuminated talk pushbutton switches can be independently configured. Two "push-in/push-out" rotary controls are used to set and maintain the desired headphone output level, the company explained.

Using a standard Ethernet LAN, users can easily connect multiple Model 342 units to establish a party-line intercom application with an external Dante-enabled audio matrix, such as the Studio Technologies Model 5421 or Model 5422A Dante Intercom Audio Engines. Alternatively, two Model 342 units can be used “point-to-point,” or multiple units can be interconnected with matrix intercom systems that offer Dante compatibility.

The Model 342 supports both Dante and AES67 operation and is compatible with the Dante Domain Manager (DDM) software application, the company said. Its Dante transmitter (output) and receiver (input) channels can be routed with other Dante-compatible devices using the Dante Controller software application. A call receive function allows Model 342 users to be alerted with a visual indication when a high-frequency audio call signal is active on a Dante receiver (input) channel.

This can be useful in providing real-time cues to production and support personnel, the company explained. Using the Dante Identify command, the Model 342 can be configured to turn off ("kill") active talk functions. This allows remote inactivation of unwanted microphone signals being presented to either or both intercom channels.

The Model 342 offers pro audio performance that is not found in typical party-line intercom devices, the company reported. A low-noise, wide dynamic-range microphone preamplifier and associated voltage-controlled-amplifier (VCA) dynamics controller (compressor) ensures that microphone audio quality is preserved while minimizing the chance of signal overload. The dual-channel (stereo) headphone output provides substantial drive capability along with minimal noise and distortion. All audio routing, level control, and muting is performed within the digital domain.

The Model 342’s extensive range of operating parameters are configured using the STcontroller software application. Available free of charge from Studio Technologies, STcontroller allows production personnel to quickly and easily configure the unit’s capabilities to meet an application’s exact needs. STcontroller is offered in versions that are compatible with the WinOS® and macOS operating systems, the company said.

SKOKIE, Ill.—Studio Technologies has announced its new Model 5422A Dante Intercom Audio Engine, which is designed to create party-line intercom circuits when used with Dante-compatible products. The unit is based on Studio Technologies’ Model 5422, but the “A” in Model 5422A notes an auto mix function for enhanced party-line and audio mixing applications.

Using Dante audio-over Ethernet technology, Model 5422A supports broadcast, production and related applications. It creates “virtual” PL intercom circuits, it also provides other Dante-based on-air, talent cueing (IFB), audio mixing and specialized interfacing resources.

The unit’s auto mix is an audio level control function that’s implemented in high-speed programmable (FPGA) logic. The auto mix helps ensure that all party-line users contribute an equal audio level to an intercom channel, Studio Technologies says.
SKOKIE, Ill.—Studio Technologies is ready to share its new Model 5421 Dante Intercom Engine, a Dante audio-over-IP (AoIP) party-line intercom system that can handle up to 16 users.

The Model 5421 is designed to remove possible party-line issues like a high noise-floor and poor voice intelligibility by moving party-line comms to a Dante-based, AES67 and Dante Domain Manager-compatible, Power-over-Ethernet system that uses a a standard Ethernet local-area-network.

The new Studio Technologies intercom requires a single RJ45 Ethernet connection for both data and power, and setup from Studio Technologies’ STController software. It features a field-programmable gate array-based mix minus matrix to create the party line for up to 16. The systems’ audio engine can be divided into five group configurations. Meanwhile, the beltpack’s bidirectional Dante audio paths can be configured by routing transmit (output) and receive (input) pairs to the Model 5421 using the Dante Controller software application.

Model 5421 also features an intercom-specific Auto Mix that when activated employs a digital-audio algorithm designed for enhanced party-line audio performance. This automatically adjusts the level of each user’s contribution to a group mix based on an analysis of every input.

The new intercom is compatible with all Dante-compatible intercom beltpacks, including Studio Technologies’ own Model 372A and Model 373A. Model 5421 can also be integrated into applications that utilize other audio devices, including mixing consoles, user stations and matrix intercom systems.

Additional features include a USB type A connector for firmware updates and LED status indicators for Ethernet network and Dante status monitoring. An installation kit is also available to mount one or two Model 5421 units in one space.

For more information, visit www.studio-tech.com.

LOS ANGELES—Providing internal communications for high-profile broadcasts and live musical events requires quality intercom solutions. My work takes me to approximately 40-50 events annually, including the “BET Awards” which I have worked on for more than 15 years. Despite overseeing the intercom infrastructure at the show year-after-year, new workflow needs arise each year as the production evolves and adds new segments.

Clarity Intercom deployed Studio Technologies’ Model 205 Announcer’s Console at the 2018 BET Awards.

During this year’s broadcast, the music director debuted a new feature “Music Matters,” which required multiple channels of communication between various production personnel. I used Studio Technologies Model 205 Announcer’s Console, which allowed the music director to communicate with the production and technical staff while also facilitating a talkback function to feed the band members in ear monitors for cuing and communications purposes.

The unit was the perfect intercom solution for the task at hand and will now be a consistent workflow solution for the variety of productions we oversee every year. The Model 205 is a compact console that’s simple to deploy due to its easily viewable buttons. It guarantees superb audio quality and provides the flexibility to easily change and alter a setup while maintaining simple ergonomics for nontechnical operators.

Support for Dante Audio-over-Ethernet digital media infrastructures is another significant benefit of the Model 205, as well as Studio Technologies products in general. I recently adopted the company’s Dante product line to allow for easy connectivity and communication between multiple manufacturers. Products from Studio Technologies have made this a seamless transition, and with the Model 205, I can now easily distribute high-quality, low-latency audio during any production.

Productions continue to modernize and expand from year-to-year, requiring more advanced production technology to keep pace with these changes. Studio Technologies has continued to develop and improve its product line with greater quality of audio versus older legacy products provided by other manufacturers.

Additionally, the newest generation of Studio Technology products, such as the Model 205, have a built-in control function with the STController application. During the BET Awards, this allowed us to quickly and easily access the audio DSP (digital signal processing) of the Model 205 and optimize the unit to meet the needs of this specific application. With the unique setup of the “Music Matters” stage, this was essential to customizing the Model 205 to fit the exact needs of the segment during the event.

John Arenas is a partner and owner of TV-Coms, LLC., a communications infrastructure company in Burbank, Calif.
SEATTLE—NAB 2018 was a watershed year for IP technology introductions in the intercom space, with a bevy of new products showcased from various vendors. As these products have begun delivering, customers are learning the advantages of IP-based facility communications.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND SCALABILITY

For Guy Low, content and creative manager at RTS/Bosch, the company’s introduction of its ODIN OMNEO digital intercom matrix at the show marked a significant milestone in the company’s product line. “For our existing RTS matrix customers in the broadcast field, this is an active way to incorporate a new, more compact, more energy-efficient system, with all the technology required, into their existing infrastructure,” he said. “Energy efficiency is a key component. Scalability is very important. So there’s a lot going on inside this rack unit format here.”

RTS/Bosch ODIN OMNEO

Doug Heinzen, North American marketing manager for the company, noted ODIN’s “Swiss Army Knife” characteristics.

“You think of all of the cards and boards that we used to have to put into the Atom, or the Atom M chassis, are now actually all integrated on an FPGA and they’re done in software,” he said. “So you never have to open the chassis to have an additional functionality.”

Customers can start off with an initial 16 ports on the box, but through software upgrades or licensing, the number of ports can be increased up to 128 ports in a single chassis, according to Heinzen.

HIGHEST DENSITY

Clear-Com has rolled out its E-IPA high-density audio-and-intercom-over-IP connection card for the Eclipse HX digital matrix intercom family, which it claims “offers the highest density for IP connectivity for any of the major intercom manufacturers at 64 ports in a single card,” according to the Bob Boster, president of Alameda, Calif.-based company. “We actually license it at different number of ports, so you don’t necessarily have to buy it with the full 64, but 64 ports is far in excess of our competitors who are at lesser numbers than that.” Boster added that there are a number of advantages to the new product, though not all of them will all be relevant to every customer.

“For some customers, there is a simplicity in wiring infrastructure,” he said. “There’s a management advantage in terms of routing and moving around and dynamically modifying their system elements very simply. There’s a standardization advantage to being able to put in a platform where everything is all on the IP platform, and it allows them to have a sort of standardization of infrastructure, that otherwise would have been some mixture of fiber and copper, a variety of different connection types, so there’s kind of an advantage there.”

A WHOLE NEW SET OF SKILLS

Riedel has been leveraging IP for its Artist digital matrix intercom ecosystem for several years, offering integrated support for AVB, AES67, Dante, and VoIP, according to Rick Seegull, systems consulting manager for the German-based company.

“Our Bolero wireless intercom system uses antennas that are distributed over AES67 networks that can be layered atop existing IP infrastructures,” he said. “Our SmartPanels link to the Artist matrix using AES67.“Because of lower bandwidth requirements, audio is simply easier to move,” Seegull added. “And for customers that aren’t quite ready to change their entire workflows over to IP, audio is a great way to ease into the world of IP while learning new skills.”

He pointed out that the challenge of managing and maintaining IP networks requires a whole new set of skills for technicians and new levels of cooperation between technicians and their IT departments.

“IT networks are collaborative in nature, so it will be up to everyone—manufacturers, operators, engineers, and IT professionals—to work together on delivering the best results for the technical infrastructures of the future.”

IP BRINGS SCALABILITY

John Schur, president of TV Solutions Group at Telos Alliance, emphasized the importance of a simplified infrastructure with IP.

Telos Infinity

“Where traditional intercoms have used a matrix, where you have point-to-point cabling from the matrix to each individual device in the system, there are tremendous savings in an IP-based system because, just like a computer network, you run Ethernet cabling from routers and switchers,” he said. “Almost an infinite number of devices can be attached to the network without having to run additional cabling.”

Schur says the Telos’ Infinity system is scalable for similar reasons.

“For the IP infrastructure, you’re able to plug in almost any number of belt packs and panels to your network,” he said. “In our case, we’re supporting open standards, so an IP-based intercom can use AES67. That allows the intercom to seamlessly interface with other devices.

“We make a VX telephony system and so you can interface your telephone system to your intercom system with no additional hardware,” Schur added. “Everything’s on the network, and it’s a matter of making those connections in software.”

INCREASED FLEXIBILITY

Gordon Kapes, president of Studio Technologies said that its platform offers the benefits of using the Dante protocol over standard Ethernet networks.

This Dante Audio-over-Ethernet Technology “is a major strength, eliminating the need for a separate proprietary wiring scheme,” Kapes said. “This can save cost on the initial implementation, adding yet another application to the Ethernet network resources that are now so ubiquitous to all facilities. Long-term benefits of utilizing Dante is that it allows for simple moving, adding, or rearranging of the physical intercom resources. “For users, I think the biggest benefit is flexibility and having the ability to utilize products from a variety of vendors to achieve the desired system performance,” he added. “It’s quite simple: Let’s say that the core of the intercom system is provided by one vendor. This would be good as there would be consistent user interfaces, control, etc.; but then functions such as interconnecting the usual signal sources, and sending signals to other normal destinations, would be trivial.”

WIRELESS WORKAROUND

In addition to the IP revolution, wireless intercom vendors in particular, are dealing with changes in RF spectrum availability.

“The biggest challenge for wireless users is realizing how quickly the 600 MHz auction is impacting business,” said James Stoffo, CTO of Radio Active Designs in East Rutherford, N.J. “T-Mobile is rapidly deploying the channels they purchased. They are not only staying on schedule but are ahead in some areas. Many industry professionals have already opted out of operating in the 600MHz band, just to avoid any possible pitfalls.”

RAD manufactures the UV- 1G wireless intercom system that features the company’s proprietary Enhanced Narrow Band technology, according to Stoffo.

“UV-1G is a unique modulation scheme that is 10 times more spectrally efficient than the current FM technology on the market,” he said. “This proprietary approach is a form of Amplitude Modulation, and it makes the transmitter’s occupied bandwidth—a critical figure in wireless frequency coordination—more predictable. RAD made sure that setup was quick and intuitive, he added.

[Read: TV Technology's 2018 Guide to Intercoms]

“One person can set up a pair of antennas for a limitless number of belt-packs in no time,” he said. “The hardware interface and software app are simple to use, making it a breeze to change parameters of the pack including radio frequencies, assignments and audio routing. Users can move from studio to studio and quickly change parameters to fit their needs.”

PLUG AND PLAY

Eartec makes wireless headset systems that originally were developed for high school football coaching, markets that have guided the company’s product development, according to company President John Hooper.

“These people, whatever they get, it has to come out of a box and work,” he said. “They’re not going to read instructions, they’ve got to be able to put the batteries in and turn the thing on, and it better work.” For the full duplex communication industry, we’re supplying a set that’s very simple to use and therefore very cost effective,” Hooper added. “We’re just getting ready to introduce a set where you can get eight people all talking, without a base station. This set is designed to work in theaters and TV studios.”

There will be lots to watch in the next few years for intercom systems as IP standards firm up.

BURBANK, CALIF.—For the past 30 years, I have been providing communication infrastructure for special events and large award shows including the Grammy and Emmy awards. During that time, my company has seen new technologies develop that have significantly improved workflow and allowed us to do things never before thought possible.

The Model 374 is a four-channel device that can bridge the gap between single- and dual-channel party-line devices. When Studio Technologies recently released its Model 374 Intercom Beltpack, they changed the game. We purchased three of these beltpacks and immediately put them to the test at the 2016 MTV Movie Awards, 2016 Billboard Music Awards and, most recently, the 2016 BET Awards. The results were nothing short of spectacular.

THE MAGIC NUMBER
The fact that the Model 374s are four-channel devices is significant, because this allows me to expand out to four intercom channels, something that previously had not been possible in a small, compact self-powering box. With four independent talk and listen channels, the Model 374 bridges the gap between typical single- and dual- channel party-line devices, and permanently installed multichannel intercom panels.

There’s no other beltpack on the market that does four channels. The fact that it incorporates Dante Audio-over-Ethernet network media technology, uses power-over-Ethernet (PoE) powering and can be used on most Ethernet switches is a huge benefit to us. The audio quality is superior to anything else that’s out there and the operators love the simplicity of it.

AWARD-WORTHY
At award programs, we deployed the Model 374 beltpacks for teleprompter operators, which allowed them to receive their production channels, prompter program channels and a “pre-read” channel, which is when a presenter pre-reads the script before they go on stage. This audio is sent to a microphone, which is then sent to one of the channels of the Model 374 to allow changes on the fly. The Model 374s, in the production infrastructure that we utilize, are part of a long-established 200-beltpack system.

The Model 374s interface with a RedNet 2 Dante-to-analog interface from Focusrite. The analog channels then interface with a Riedel intercom system, which is part of the main infrastructure. Our overall system also relies on a Studio Technologies Model 215 Dante Announcer Box and multiple Studio Technologies Model 370 2-channel Dante beltpacks.

As far as I’m concerned, the Model 374 is the best beltpack that has ever come out.

John Arenas is a partner and owner of TV-Coms, LLC., a communications infrastructure company in Burbank, Calif.
SKOKIE, ILL. — NEP Group is using Dante-enabled technology for its latest mobile unit, a truck dedicated to sports production thet went on the road to cover Thursday night football and professional golf events. The truck’s essentially all-IP infrastructure included extensive use of Dante audio-over-Ethernet technology for many of the intercom, on-air and talent cueing audio paths. Studio Technologies supplied its Model 370 Intercom Beltpacks, Model 380 On-Air Beltpacks and Model 216 Announcer’s Consoles.

“Dante networking technology has given us the ability to put whatever we need in terms of user interface—in this case the Studio Technologies boxes—in whatever quantity is appropriate without having to run additional wire,” said George Hoover, chief technology officer for NEP Group Inc. “Not having to run an additional wire down the golf course or having to pull in another cable is a very nice thing, particularly when it is a last minute add.”

The Model 370 Beltpack includes the features required of traditional broadcast two-channel party-line intercom user devices and adds the advanced performance and capabilities that Dante audio-over-Ethernet provides. The Model 380 On-Air Beltpack offers a combination of audio resources, providing both on-air and talent cue (interruptible foldback, or IFB) capabilities in a compact, portable package. With just a power-over-Ethernet connection, a microphone and a pair of headphones or an earpiece, a complete broadcast stand-up on-air position can be created. The Model 216 Announcer Console provides the resources required by on-air announcers, commentators and related production personnel. It serves as the “hub” for routing the critical on-air, talent cueing (IFB) and intercom audio signals over Dante using a single Ethernet connection.

Hoover said the truck’s design uses Dante technology to interface its audio console with its intercom system as well as related equipment. The core routing of the mobile facility is an IP-based router that ties the various trailers that comprise the unit together. It also brings audio back from the various announce positions on the golf course and the football stadium, on a network connection as opposed to discrete analog or digital audio lines.

A simpler set-up that is easier to modify as needed is just the first benefit of deploying Studio Technologies’ Dante equipment, according to Hoover. “Because we are not using analog audio and now using an IP network with digital audio, we are immune to many kinds of signal interference. Once you move over to networked audio you get rid of all kinds of audio distortions, buzz and ground loops. It definitely increases the overall audio signal quality and reliability.”

The decision to use Studio Technologies’ equipment is just the latest time the major live event and OB company has turned to the vendor over a 15-year relationship, says Hoover. “We made the decision to go with Studio Technologies based on our past experience with audio quality and reliability, service and support,” he said. “Studio Technologies has taken care of us and supported us well and the products work and sound great. You stay with a partner that you know is going to deliver for you.”

In addition to using Model 370 and 380 beltpacks and a dozen Model 216 Announcer Consoles, the latest truck also includes Studio Technologies’ Model 45DR Dante to 2-Channel Party Line Intercom Interfaces, Model 46 Dual 2-Wire to 4-Wire Interfaces, Model 41 Line-Level Audio to IFB Circuit Interfaces, and Model 72 Level/Meter Interfaces.

COLOGNE, GERMANY—Much like one of Super Mario’s mushrooms does, Studio Technologies’ Model 214 Announcer’s Console has been added to ESL to upgrade its services. The e-sports company, which produces and broadcasts video games tournaments globally, has announced it recently upgraded much of its equipment, including the addition of the Dante-enabled Model 214.

One of three Dante-enabled consoles from Studio Technologies, the Model 214 is designed to serve as the audio control for announcers, commentators and production personnel. The unit can integrate on-air talkback and cue audio signal routing in a single tabletop system. The system can be powered by an Ethernet connection with Power-over-Ethernet or external 12-volt DC power source.

The Model 214 allows ESL to use a network switch and plug an Ethernet cable into each announcer console, then route everything through a computer, according to ESL audio engineer Ben Cochran. Other features of the system include changeable mic pre-amp gain and power-entry connections.

Studio Technologies is a provider of video, audio and fiber-optic products for the audio and broadcast markets.

The product’s mic/line inputs can be used in both permanent and portable applications; its filtering also minimizes the chance that RF energy will interfere with audio input signals.

Additional features for the Model 5205 include a Power-over-Ethernet power source, two 3-pin XLR connectors, front-panel pushbutton switches, LED indicators, and it can be used as a portable or mounted device.
