SOUTHPORT, Conn.—Main Street Sports Group’s FanDuel Sports Network has announced ambitious plans to offer free streams of some live local NBA and NHL games on major streaming platforms beginning mid-November. All of the as-yet-unspecified games will also air for free in over-the-air broadcasts by local stations.

Earlier this month, during the Local Strategies sessions co-hosted by NAB Show New York and TVNewsCheck, Main Street Sports Group’s chief revenue officer, Eric Ratchman, said Main Street had reached deals with some station groups and teams to offer the free streams. The company has not, however, released details of the games or the specific station groups.

FanDuel Sports said it would bring select live game productions of its NBA and NHL team partners—also available in-market on an over-the-air (OTA) basis—directly to Pluto TV, Prime Video and Samsung TV Plus, with more platforms and services to be announced. Games will be presented outside the networks’ paywall, which the owner of cable regional sports networks hopes will help drive subscriptions and increase fan interest in the teams.

FanDuel Sports also stressed that the launch of some free-streaming games in November marks the first phase of its broader, multiphase free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) strategy. That strategy is designed to extend reach to younger, digital-first sports fans while fueling direct-to-consumer and linear TV growth and creating a new path for marketers to reach sports viewers through advertising and sponsorship opportunities, the network said.

"Launching this digital game offering is a big step in expanding our national reach and continuing to prioritize the different ways fans can watch their hometown teams," Ratchman said. "By bringing games to free streaming platforms that reach hundreds of millions of viewers, we're making local sports more accessible than ever and proving what our ubiquitous access model can deliver."

FanDuel Sports plans to launch a dedicated 24/7 FAST channel in 2026, which will serve as a national front door to help amplify its growing roster of programming, including “Golic & Golic,” “Countdown Live” and more, it said.

FanDuel Sports Network is a group of RSNs created after Bally Sports, which had been owned by Sinclair, filed for bankruptcy protection and was rebranded. FanDuel Sports Network, which emerged from bankruptcy in early 2025, is owned by Main Street Sports Group, formerly Diamond Sports Group.

NEW YORK—Pluto TV and the All Women's Sports Network have launched a free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) AWSN channel in the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and the Nordics, with a simultaneous launch on the platform in the United States.

AWSN's dedicated Pluto TV channel is a 24/7 linear stream, including over 2,500 hours of live women's sports annually, and a robust offering of on-demand programming.

AWSN, co-founded by Whoopi Goldberg and Jungo TV, was created to provide a platform for women athletes to be seen, celebrated and supported. The network transforms visibility into opportunity, building a space where performance and ambition are center stage, it says.

"I'm excited to see AWSN grow and reach audiences across the U.S. and new global markets through Pluto TV,” Goldberg said in a statement. “For far too long, incredible women athletes have been competing at the highest levels without the recognition they deserve.
NEW YORK—In another important example of how artificial intelligence is transforming the ad business, Paramount Advertising has introduced the AI-powered Paramount Ads Manager.

The offering is designed to attract new potential TV advertisers by making premium video and television advertising accessible to small- and medium-sized businesses (SMB). Powered by generative AI partner Waymark, the offering allows SMBs to create, manage, and track their ads across Paramount+ and Pluto TV, the world’s most widely distributed FAST service, tapping into 100 million full episode monthly viewers.

The launch is notable because the platform lowers the barrier to CTV entry for SMB advertisers, providing highly customizable campaign schedule, budget, and targeting options. The Paramount Ads Manager also allows SMB advertisers to use the proven format of a :15 or :30-second unskippable, big-screen ads in premium content, which in the past would have been difficult for smaller companies to create and manage, Paramount said.

Paramount also has one of the largest geo-targeted inventory supplies available, which will provide the SMB segment with better reach and efficiency.

Paramount's AI partner Waymark has already struck partnerships with Scripps, Spectrum Reach, Fox and other station groups/media companies over the last year, helping them garner more than $200 million in new revenue.

More specifically, the companies reported that Paramount Ads Manager allows advertisers to:

With Paramount Ads Manager, SMBs new to television advertising can easily create and launch ads in one business day, with campaign minimums as low as $500.

Advertisers select the location, demographics, and content placements that are most aligned with their target customers.

Paramount Ads Manager is the first platform to offer self-service creative tools, providing SMB advertisers a variety of creative options:

Creating New Assets: Advertisers can utilize Paramount Ads Manager’s new creative tools to help produce a :15 or :30-second video ad customized for their business. Powered by generative AI partner Waymark, Paramount Ads Manager will create a CTV ad based on images, text, and videos derived from the SMB’s website. The ad is generated within minutes and carries no additional costs to the advertiser.

Repurposing Social Media Assets: SMB advertisers with social media assets can turn their posts into dynamic CTV creatives with our partner Spaceback. Brands can convert any Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, X, or Facebook post into a CTV asset in minutes.

Editing Existing Assets: More advanced capabilities to turn existing image and video assets into CTV-ready ads will be rolled out later this year.

SMB advertisers investing in Paramount Streaming inventory will have access to a powerful suite of reporting and attribution tools that provide a transparent understanding of ad performance and outcomes.
LOS ANGELES—With so much attention focused on artificial intelligence and AI-driven recommendation engines when it comes to over-the-top channels, Pluto TV is trying to set itself apart from the pack by taking the opposite approach: promote the human element in programming decisions.

The Free Ad-Supported Television (FAST) channel today announced its new branding campaign puts the spotlight on “the heart and humanity” behind the service. More than 50 curators use their passion, expertise and understanding of audience behavior in addition to advanced technology to deliver entertainment selections to viewers, Pluto TV said today announcing a pair of new themes.

The first, “Programmed By Humans,” highlights the FAST channel’s programming and programmers responsible for curating its channels. The messaging puts the human element at the center of how Pluto TV’s programming connects with viewers. The theme is being conveyed in three commercial spots: one for sci-fi, another for comedy and a third for true crime. Each centers on fictionalized curators appearing in the living rooms of viewers to assist them in making a programming selection.

“When developing this campaign, we set out to connect with audiences in a meaningful way that captures the essence of Pluto TV and how transformative it has been to the world of television,” said Val Kaplan, global senior vice president, head of consumer marketing at Pluto TV. “Our creative focus was to spotlight what sets Pluto TV apart in the increasingly competitive streaming market– the human element of curation that is intrinsic to the very human experience of watching television.”

The campaign begins today and will run through the end of the year, Pluto TV said.

The second branding campaign, “TV the Way it Should Be,” will launch out-of-home creative at major sports arenas, airports, ferries and shopping destinations. It also will appear at New York City’s Times Square, which is home to Paramount Global. Creative spots also will air during select NFL and NBA games, Pluto TV said.

The FAST channel also announced a recategorization to take place between now and year’s end. The first of the new categories includes drama, sci-fi and true crimes. Additional categories are being developed. Programmers have created the categories based on how viewers navigate the service, it said.

NEW YORK—Paramount reported that losses from its streaming operations continued to decline as the company reported growth in streaming subscribers, viewing and DTC ad revenue in Q2 2023.

“In Q2, we maintained our focus on scaling our streaming platforms, maximizing our traditional business, and building a sustainable business model that will return the company to significant earnings growth in 2024,” Paramount president and CEO Bob Bakish said in a statement. “Notably, Paramount+ revenue grew 47%, total DTC ad revenue increased 21%, and global viewing hours on Paramount+ and Pluto TV were up 35% year-over-year. And despite the environment, TV Media continued to contribute significant earnings. As we look forward, we will continue to be guided by our content-first approach and seek to maximize its value across platforms and revenue streams, while also operating with the utmost efficiency through this year of peak streaming investment.”

In the direct-to-consumer segment, Paramount reported that global Paramount+ streaming subs increased by about 700,000 to 61 million in Q2 as Paramount+ and Pluto TV increased global viewing hours 35% YoY.

Overall DTC revenue increased 40% year-over-year as subscription revenue grew 47% to over $1.2 billion, driven by subscriber growth on Paramount+ and advertising revenue rose 21%, driven by higher impressions for Paramount+ and Pluto TV.

More specifically, Paramount+ revenue grew 47%, driven by subscriber growth and increased advertising revenue, the company said.

That growth also helped adjusted OIBDA losses fall from $445 million in Q2 2022 to $424 million in Q2 2023, an improvement of $21 million as higher revenues more than offset incremental costs to support the growth of Paramount+, the company said.

During the earnings call, the company also announced plans to sell Simon & Schuster to KKR for $1.62 billion, a move that will reduce its debts and help fund the financial demands of its pivot towards streaming services.

During an earnings call with analysts, Bakish highlighted the company’s rapidly growing digital advertising business as a way to “mitigate any near-term challenges” with the current soft ad market.

“Paramount has seen sequential improvement in year-over-year advertising in Q2,” he said. “And in the upfront, we just wrapped, Paramount saw positive low to mid-single growth on volume. And in both cases, digital is a point of strength.”

“Paramount is a leader in the digital video ad space, and I want to ensure you understand the extent and depth of our digital ad capabilities,” he continued. “Our direct digital revenue is up by strong double digits year-over-year, powered by the premium content offerings on Paramount+ and Pluto TV. 3 years ago, we launched EyeQ, our digital ad platform as a simple and effective solution for advertisers to connect their brands to consumers at scale. Since then, it has seen incredible growth. The EyeQ footprint now stands at more than 90 million full episode viewers domestically, and we expect to generate revenue approaching $3 billion this year, rivaling the best – the biggest players in digital video, and we’re building upon that strength internationally as well.”

Rising prices for streaming services are having a notable impact on the media landscape, with more users adopting ad-supported streaming services and nearly one third of cord cutters saying they might go back to cable if the price hikes continue, according to a major new survey from Horowitz Research.

Today, nearly 7 in 10 (69%) TV content viewers in the U.S. use free streaming services at least monthly, a sharp increase from 42% in 2019, according to Horowitz’s latest State of Media, Entertainment & Tech: Subscriptions 2023 study.

The new report also noted that the free services most used by consumers are Peacock, Tubi, Pluto, and YouTube.

“The data from this year’s study points to some important opportunities for both media companies and consumers,” notes Adriana Waterston, chief revenue officer and insights & strategy lead for Horowitz Research. “The adoption of AVOD/FAST services — and the concomitant increase in streaming ad revenue we can expect to see — will help offset revenue loss on the linear side, which is critical as programming costs continue to skyrocket. On the consumer side, managed services — in which subscribers can see and manage all their streaming content in one place — would be an antidote to the challenges inherent to today’s highly fragmented streaming space, and consumers seem open to consolidating their services together. It’s a matter of which companies will compete to be the managed services solution for the streaming age, between traditional MVPDs and tech companies like Amazon, Samsung, Roku, and Apple.”

The study also found that on the subscription streaming (SVOD) side self-reported total average spending on these services is now $50/month, which in turn is prompting a growing appetite for managed services to help control costs.

In one notable finding, cord-cutters were surveyed about how much they perceive they are saving now that they cut the cord. In 2019, over half of cord-cutters felt they were saving “a really good amount”; in this current study, that number dropped to 33%.

Already about 30% of consumers indicate that they pay for at least one of their streaming services in combination with another service they have (e.g., as a bundle with another SVOD, through a service like Amazon Prime, as a perk with a cell phone plan, etc.), Horowitz found.

Another notable finding is that after years of decline in MVPD subscriptions, penetration of traditional cable/satellite services seems to be remaining steady. Consistent with last year, half (52%) of TV content viewers now subscribe to MVPD services and customer satisfaction with their service overall among those subscribers is high, at 80%.

Satisfaction numbers have increased slightly over the past few years as less happy customers abandon their MVPDs for streamed options, while MVPD loyalists who derive a lot of value out of the service remain subscribed, the researchers at Horowitz said.

Notably, one in three cord-cutters (32%) say that if the cost of all their streaming services continues to increase, they might consider going back to cable.

NEW YORK—Improved results for streaming services continued to pour in this week, with ViacomCBS reporting for the first time that it had more than $1 billion in streaming revenue during a quarter and that its streaming subs increased by 4.3 million to nearly 47 million in Q3, 2021.

In a Q3, 2021 earnings report that provided new insights into the progress ViacomCBS is making in its shift towards streaming, the company reported that streaming revenue was up 62% year-over-year, driven by strength in subscriptions and advertising and that it had achieved 79% year-over-year growth in streaming subscription revenue.

It also generated 48% year-over-year growth in Q3, 2021 in streaming advertising revenue, largely driven by Pluto TV, which grew global monthly active users (maus) to over 54 million and revenue by 99% year-over-year.

ViacomCBS said that such content as “A Quiet Place Part II,” “Paw Patrol: The Movie,” the return of the NFL and the new CBS fall season helped boost subscriber acquisition and consumption on Paramount+.

The company also noted that SkyShowtime, a recently announced joint venture with Comcast that will include premium and original content from both companies, has plans to reach more than 20 European territories encompassing 90 million homes.

But like Discovery and some other programmers, the higher costs of making the pivot to streaming hurt ViacomCBS’s operating income, which fell by about 3% year over year, and earnings per share, which dipped by 25% to $0.69 in Q3, 2021.

In a statement, ViacomCBS president and CEO Bob Bakish noted that "ViacomCBS continued to show tremendous momentum across the business as we executed against our strategy. We added 4.3M global streaming subscribers, raising our total to nearly 47M, driven by the scaling of the diverse content offering on Paramount+. Looking forward, we're thrilled about the fresh array of content coming to Paramount+ in the next few months and can't wait to share it with our global audience. Our strategy is clearly working and we'll continue to use the power of global content, distribution and market expansion to drive scale."

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Federal Communications Commission’s Enforcement Bureau has announced that it has settled an investigation with Pluto Inc. and its parent company, ViacomCBS Inc., regarding violations of the Commission’s accessibility rules.

As part of the settlement, Pluto will pay a $3.5 million civil penalty for the violations and has agreed to enter into a compliance plan to ensure that the non-exempt video programming Pluto streams over the internet includes closed captioning in compliance with Commission rules.

The FCC reported that today’s action reflects the first consent decree and first enforcement action related to Internet Protocol (IP) closed captioning rules since their adoption in 2012.

The IP-closed captioning rules apply broadly to the distributors, providers, and owners of IP-delivered video programming, the FCC said.

The rules require that all nonexempt full-length video programming delivered using Internet Protocol must be provided with closed captions if the programming was previously shown on television in the United States with captions or is live programming being shown on television in the United States with captions.

The FCC reported that the Enforcement Bureau’s investigation confirmed that Pluto failed to comply with the IP closed captioning rules when distributing video programming on numerous platforms used to disseminate Pluto TV.

Additionally, the company failed to implement the closed captioning functionality requirements and make contact information available to users in order to submit written closed captioning complaints.

As a result of Pluto’s actions, individuals with hearing disabilities were unable to access closed captioning when viewing Pluto TV over some platforms, the FCC said.

The consent decree is available here.
