During the show, Pliant is also introducing new CrewCom Flex BeltPacks, available in two-channel [CBP-22] and four-channel [CBP-24] versions. Designed for flexible production workflows, the beltpacks feature integrated microphones and speakers, allowing users an option to communicate without requiring a headset.

The platform also includes CrewCom Flex Virtual Intercom, a browser-based VoIP communications solution available in 4-, 8-, 16-, and 36-key virtual user configurations. LAS VEGAS—Pliant Technologies will highlight a range of new accessories for its wireless intercom productions at the 2026 NAB Show, April 18-22 in Las Vegas.

While the company continues to support its established product families, Pliant is introducing several new accessories designed to enhance workflow flexibility, improve connectivity, and expand charging capabilities across its SmartBoom headsets, MicroCom XR, and CrewCom systems.

CrewCom users will see a new Three-RT Bracket that enables mounting of up to three Radio Transceivers together. The bracket supports one-, two-, or three-RT configurations, offering increased deployment flexibility for applications requiring higher user density in a single location.

In addition to new accessory introductions, several previously announced CrewCom products will be on display at NAB, including the brand’s CrewCom 6-Bay Charger, Digital Audio Network Interface, IP-Rated Radio Transceivers and C12 Compact Radio Pack for CrewCom, and its CrewCom CB2 systems. AUBURN, Ala.—Pliant Technologies has named Adam Grede as regional sales manager, supporting all sales efforts for the professional wireless intercom solutions provider’s products to West Coast customers and across North America.

Grede, who will be based in Southern California, is a 20-year AV industry veeteran who most recently was national sales manager at SKB Cases, where he led nationwide sales initiatives and strengthened that company’s partnerships across the AV, MI and professional touring markets, Pliant said.

He’ll work with Matthew Lott, regional sales manager based in greater New York City, and Kathy Belcher, sales administrator based in Pliant’s Auburn, Ala., headquarters, to support customers across all regions.

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y.—In my line of work, whether it’s eSports tournaments, televised boxing, high-stakes upfronts or massive events like Formula One, flawless communication isn’t optional, it’s critical. Over the years, I’ve used a variety of Pliant Technologies wireless intercom systems and headsets on a range of projects. At the 2025 NAB Show in Las Vegas, April 6-9, Pliant Technologies will highlight its CrewCom CB2 Professional Wireless Intercom system now with a new firmware update that adds dual listen capabilities as well as several other feature enhancements to the system.

CrewCom CB2 is a full-duplex, install-friendly and feature-packed solution for small to mid-level applications requiring a reliable, great sounding wireless intercom with excellent RF coverage and range. Available in both 900MHz and 2.4GHz frequency options as well as 900MHz Oceania and 2.4GHz CE compliant models, the system includes the CrewCom CB2 BaseStation and up to six CRP-12 two-channel radio packs to create a powerful but economical wireless intercom system. The latest solution provides customers with two intercom channels as well as interconnectivity to all industry standard two- and four-wire intercom systems.

With the latest firmware update, (v1.2), the Dual Listen mode is now available, which is a selectable mode of operation for existing hardware that will allow individual CRP-12 Radio Packs (RPs) to simultaneously listen to both the A and B channels. When selected, this new mode of operation will allow for each individual user’s RP to be set as needed for their user-specific applications. It will also allow the user to adjust individual channels relative audio levels from the RP.

In addition, two new user-requested feature improvements have also been made to the system. Radio Pack Talk Tones can now be enabled or disabled from the Pack Setting Menu on the BaseStation. In addition to a currently available Momentary setting, the talk button mode for individual Radio Packs can now be set to Latching while in High Density Operational Mode.

First, two CB2 BaseStations can be connected and the audio synced to create one system with up to 12 full-duplex users. Two separate CB2 systems can also be synced to ensure RF performance if they need to be co-located in the same RF area.

The CB2 can also sync and be co-located in the same coverage area as an existing CrewCom system. In addition, High Density mode, a selectable mode of operation for existing hardware that will allow user densities to increase by more than double, will allow for up to 16 Radio Packs (RPs) to log into a single BaseStation with the expanded capability to combine two BaseStation for up to 32 total users.

The CrewCom CRP-12 radio packs feature the same batteries as CrewCom, making the batteries compatible with its 6+6 Drop-In Radio Pack and battery charger. The system is also compatible with Pliant’s complete line of SmartBoom headsets.

This affordable, out of the box wireless system boasts simple set up and its small, lightweight IP65-rated beltpacks are reliable, durable and easy to operate. The CRP-C12 is one of the industry’s smallest, fully featured, wireless professional intercom radio packs (RP), measuring approximately 3.5 in. x 3.5 in x 2 in. (9 cm x 9 cm x 5 cm), while weighing just under 9 oz./ 255 g. 

The new compact RP is available in 900MHz (where legal) and 2.4GHz (worldwide). Although small in stature (at least 25 percent smaller in size and 30 percent lighter than most belt packs in use today), the CRP-C12 does not compromise on performance, as it is fully featured and includes support for up to two assignable conferences with a simultaneous dual listen option. It is fully compatible with both the CrewCom and CB2 wireless intercom systems. 

For further customization, it also includes two assignable function buttons that can be configured via a user profile for functions such as stage announce, call, or trigger of contact closures.

The updated SB11L2 SmartBoom LITE Headset includes enhancements to the headset’s existing list of features for improved flexibility, stability, and a more comfortable fit. 

Among the new features is a new field-replaceable cable and a newly designed swivel earcup. The innovative headset features the SmartBoom muting feature, which allows the adjustable microphone boom to act as an on/off switch for quick muting. It also incorporates a closed back, supra-aural on-ear design, and a single-ear lightweight form factor that provides enhanced acoustic isolation. The ambidextrous, swiveling mic boom is flexible and has a noise-cancelling directional microphone optimized for voice communications and outstanding audio quality.

The new PHS-IEHU In-ear Headset utilizes silicone ear concha locks and earbuds for either left ear or right ear orientation. The new headset also allows for the use of custom ear molds designed specifically for the individual user’s ear from custom ear mold manufacturers Coda Room Audio and Sensaphonics. 

With mobility in mind, the PHS-IEHU features an unobtrusive, miniature electret microphone and windscreen with a small flexible boom. '

An offering of models based on various connectivity allows for use with most industry-standard intercom beltpacks via 4-pin or 5-pin XLR connections as well as 6-pin female Mini XLR (TA6F) connectivity. In addition, there is also an option for dual 3.5mm connectivity allowing for its use with MicroCom M or MicroCom XR wireless intercom models. An optional inline PTT (Push-to-Talk) button will also be available for applications where external remote momentary talk on/off operation is required.

The PAC-RTM-SMU Universal Single RT Mounting Bracket and PBT-VMNT Radio Transceiver Battery Adapter can transform any current CrewCom RT into one that will allow placement of an RT with connectivity to fiber where no AC power is accessible, providing approximately 16 hours of RT battery life, depending on battery size/capacity.

For increased accessibility, users can slide on any V-Mount battery to Pliant’s PBT-VMNT battery adapter and plug it directly to the 48V port of any CrewCom RT. The new battery adapter also allows for the use of any industry-standard V-mount battery to be used to power an RT for approximately eight hours or more, depending on battery size/capacity. In addition, the PAC-RTM-SMU universal RT mount was developed for maximum adaptability and flexibility, as it supports Manfrotto-style Hex, 1/4"-20, 5/8"-27 and 3/8"-16 mount thread sizes.

It uses the PBT-LIP-01 Lithium Polymer CrewCom Battery, the same used in current Pliant Radio Packs.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif.—Pliant Technologies has released details of its work providing technologies to AY Productions, a specialist in audio and intercoms that provides television networks with a talented team of communication engineers for the setup and operation of intercoms for a range of major sporting events. 

Since AY Productions first started using Pliant Technologies’ CrewCom Wireless Intercom System, the company has deployed CrewCom for a range of live productions on major networks, such as the AFC Championships, the Super Bowl and the NFL Combine, among many other large-scale live sporting events. 

As these types of productions have become more massive and technical, AY has expanded its CrewCom inventory, now carrying a total of 42 CrewCom CRP-44 Radio Packs (RPs) in addition to several CrewCom Radio Transceivers (RT), Control Units (CU) and SmartBoom headsets from Pliant Technologies.

One notable example of this being AY Productions taking on the NFL Combine. “The Combine was a big task, because at the same time, the NFL Network was doing multiple shows. Sean was swinging from studio to studio and CrewCom followed – the system was able to delegate that really well,” said Muehlen. “The ease-of-use of the RPs was also an important aspect here. Many other beltpacks can often be complicated for users, and we used to get a ton of questions about how to work the gear, but with the CrewCom RPs, it’s completely simplified. On top of that, the audio quality is great.” 

The robust design of CrewCom products has also been a standout feature in recent events. “With all the Pliant solutions, but specifically with the RPs, we’ve noticed how sturdy and resilient they are, even after being put through such demanding productions,” said Muehlen. In addition, the audio engineers admit the battery life is exceptional. “It’s better than anything else we’ve had in the past,” says Weathersby. “We’re traditionally good for an entire show.”

Broadcasting is all about communicating to and with the viewing audience. A big part of making this happen is the ability for production teams, technical crew and on-air talent to communicate with each other. Which is why intercom has always been a key technology, albeit one with fairly humble beginnings. But from relatively simple systems for studio communications, with facilities to talk to incoming sources, it has grown into both a continually developing technical area and a substantial business sector.

Part of this can be attributed to the expanding scale of TV production, not just bigger and more elaborate shows but also the ever growing use of remote access through IP networks and the cloud. This has seen REMI (REMote Integration) become a major consideration for intercom installations, although most manufacturers regard it as something that is already well-established in live production.

Smaller Crews
The difference today, says Dave MacKinnon, recently appointed vice president of product management at Clear-Com, is that whereas such a set-up would have been “very well planned out” 10 years ago, broadcasters are now working on a more “run and gun” basis.

“More productions are being done by either one person or a small production team,” explains MacKinnon, who came to Clear-Com after a career that began with the federal government and continued with 12 years at NBCUniversal. “And because of increased bandwidth and 5G, the production center doesn’t have to be in the city the show is coming out of. In the last few years the economics of broadcasting have changed dramatically, with many broadcasters wanting to spin up FAST channels to extend the value of what they are doing.”

As part of this, MacKinnon adds, “flexibility and interoperability” are the two main features broadcasters expect from modern intercom systems. Both these criteria are highlighted by John Hooper, president of Eartec, which produces a range of wireless headsets that can be connected to wired intercoms using the company’s digital interface module.

Eartec’s “plug and play solution includes software to balance the signals of the existing wired intercom and Eartec’s full duplex wireless transceivers to create a seamless audio link,” Hooper says. “We’re also seeing a growth in demand for long-range communication and offer [Eartec’s] Global Connect system for wireless communication over IP. This is linked to a computer or even a smartphone and allows mobile wireless users to communicate in full duplex through the internet.”

Eartec recently announced the availability of its new UltraLITE PRO16, a full duplex wireless headset aimed at larger crew sizes.

REMI Workflows
Rick Seegull, senior vice president of technology and business development at Riedel Communications, adds scalability and reliability to the list of requirements along with flexibility and interoperability. “Of course, there is a major IP component to provide for these features and most are converging to a SMPTE ST 2110-based system so they can easily share resources and sources—for everything, not just intercom—without creating technology islands,” he says.

REMI workflows have been at the forefront of broadcaster’s needs in live location work for several years, Seegull adds.

“This has escalated exponentially since 2020 and now become a standard component for live events, as is At-Home production allowing operators not only to be in the broadcast control room as opposed to on-site but now even being at home whenever the need arises,” he says. “Scalable intercom systems over WAN via VoIP [voice over IP] connectivity or even uncompressed, extreme low latency connections with panels linked anywhere in the world, which allows operators to use the same components they would in the broadcast truck at the venue only back at the main control room or even at home.”

Increasing Interest in Cloud Connectivity
As for the cloud, Seegull comments that it is “definitely being discussed” and used more when it comes to intercoms. This growing interest in virtualized and de-centralized hosting for intercom operations is confirmed by Martin Dyster, vice president of business development at Telos Alliance, which has been a leading proponent of cloud-based communications in recent years.

“We’ve seen a lot of growth and increased interest in this area,” he says. “It’s not necessarily because people are getting into cloud production per se or building entire systems around cloud-based audio and video technology, although those customers exist. People recognize the benefits of a virtualized comms system in being able to deploy an intercom panel at the drop of a hat to anybody anywhere in the world without the overhead of boxing up a piece of hardware, shipping it round it world and relying on someone to hook it up remotely.”

Telos has “worked closely” with the Media and Entertainment team at AWS to determine “best practices” for larger cloud workflows, according to Dyster. “We’ve also worked with technology partners to get over some of the hurdles of moving multicasts between elastic cloud computing instances [a virtual server or computing environment], which, up until now, has been very difficult to do. The partnership with AWS is very positive and they chose us as the comms partner for its delivery of the NAB Show LIVE broadcasts.”

As Michael Brown, business development manager at RTS, observes, one of the first questions asked when people discuss the cloud is: “Whose cloud?” The options are, he says, hardware on-premises or bringing in a third party to oversee the connections set-up. “Other questions that must be answered include “who is responsible for reliable connectivity and who is liable if there are missed commercial inserts when an automated update to another network occurs?’” he muses. “As well as answering these questions, the technology must be proven before a totally cloud-based comms systems is deployed on a high profile, high value production.”

Brown envisions a hybrid design, with a hardware backbone and cloud connectivity “as an adjunct and secondary usage for non-critical communications.”

Gary Rosen, vice president of global sales for wireless intercom developer Pliant Technologies, calls cloud-based intercom products “a great enhancement to an existing infrastructure” but is not convinced it will become the dominant technology for communications, at least in the short-term. “With so many factors needed to make cloud devices work external to the venue, and given the reliability of on-site systems, I don’t believe current systems will be replaced with cloud-based intercom in the near future.”

Options for cloud operations, Rosen adds, include dedicated and hosted servers, which are either in-house or provided by the likes of AWS and Google. AEQ has taken a different approach to most broadcast manufacturers by offering a dedicated cloud service that was created for the company’s systems.

“We manage it and is our own cloud, providing support to our intercom systems with full back-up and no other material on it,” explains sales director Gustavo Robles. “The cloud is very popular because it offers the possibility to interconnect remote locations in a very easy way. But there are still big projects for big customers that demand a traditional, robust, mega-redundant central matrix with dedicated hardware.”

Despite this, Robles acknowledges, requirements are changing, with users deploying what suits the productions, including utilizing smartphones or wearables as wireless beltpacks. The shifting nature of intercom is also shown by Riedel connecting analog microphones to a Bolero wireless intercom beltpack for interview work; and Telos’s prototype combined comms and commentary software panel, which can be controlled either by a touch screen or a hardware box such as the new Elgato Stream Deck Neo.

Which shows that in many ways broadcast intercom is the same as it has always been but is also evolving as new technologies appear to meet broadcaster’s needs.

WEST MONROE, La.—Pliant Technologies has announced that Christ Church, which has campuses in West Monroe, Ruston, and Sterlington, has deployed its CrewCom Wireless Intercom System at the church’s largest campus in West Monroe. The West Monroe campus attracts roughly 2,000 congregants each week. 

To produce the quality services at the church and for the online community that tunes in remotely, Christ Church, West Monroe, deployed Pliant Technologies’ CrewCom Wireless Intercom System for seamless communication amongst its media and production team.

The West Monroe location has a full production setup, including eight cameras, and a separate in-house and online mix. 

For intercoms, the team utilizes a CrewCom Control Unit (CU), as well as four of the brand’s CrewCom Radio Transceivers (RTs) placed throughout the facility: one in the video booth located at the top of the sanctuary, one placed behind the stage, another placed near front of house, which is located mid-sanctuary, and the last located in the front lobby in order to reach the parking lot for their outdoor events. 

The team has a total of 15 Pliant CrewCom Radio Packs (RPs) consisting of ten two-channel and five four-channel packs, and 15 Pliant single and dual-ear SmartBoom PRO headsets.

“With this setup, we have complete coverage of the entire campus. It’s very versatile and we can go pretty much wherever we want with the comms units,” says Craig Roberson, media and production director at Christ Church, West Monroe. “With the ability to have multiple Radio Packs per Radio Transceiver at a time, our personnel are always in range, even if they are out in the parking lot for an event.” 

According to Roberson and other members of his team, including Johnny Norman, Christ church video director, and Casey Newcomer, Christ Church videographer, the upgrade to Pliant has been a vast improvement, providing clear communication. 

“We are able to hear the band even if we are not in the worship center, as well as the director talking to us,” says Norman. “We came from a one-channel system, so having additional channels has been a real benefit, while also being really straightforward to learn and use.”

The ability to customize channel assignments for different personnel is another key benefit for the Christ Church media and production team. “Our audio tech can just talk to me and the camera operators don’t have to hear him in their headsets,” says Newcomer. “It cuts down on a lot of unnecessary chatter.”

Additionally, the team feels as though the audio quality and range of the Pliant CrewCom system is unmatched. “I noticed an improvement from day one,” says Norman. “We can hear everybody very clearly. The camera ops especially have told me that they can hear everything I say now. Before, we only had single-ear headsets, but now, all camera ops on stage with the band have a dual-ear headset, so they can hear the band and me in both ears. This results in fewer mistakes on my part and theirs because we now have clear communication.” 

“It's been a night and day difference from what we've had,” Roberson adds, “I don’t think we realized how poor the audio quality was on our previous system until we started using Pliant. Also, the build quality is exceptional; it just feels much more rugged and professional from what we were previously using. Our old system became very uncomfortable after one service; with Pliant, this is not the case.” 

Other features the team praises Pliant for include volume adjustment, configurability to customize each pack, and the long-lasting battery life of the radio packs. 

“With our previous system, we could not adjust the overall system volume at all, so it is great that we can make that adjustment to the gain in CrewWare and also still have the individual user adjust their volume,” says Roberson. “Also, the ability to create different profiles and pre-set the settings and channels of each radio pack is amazing. That’s helped us out a ton, especially for us three (myself, Johnny and Casey) who mainly talk to each other about the overall production. The audio team and camera ops are no longer distracted by our conversation and can focus on their aspect of the production. Not to mention, the battery life on the packs is fantastic. We have backup batteries, but we have not needed to use them since the packs still have power.”

LAS VEGAS—Pliant Technologies has announced that it will debut its new CRP-C12 Compact Radio Pack at the 2024 NAB Show on Booth C5310 between April 14 to 17.

The CRP-C12 is a newly designed compact Radio Pack (RP) that was created specifically for use with any CrewCom or CrewCom CB2 system. The company is billing the CRP-C12 as one of the industry’s smallest, fully featured professional radio pack, measuring approximately 3.5 in. x 3.5 in (9 cm x 9 cm), while weighing just under 9 oz./ 255 g. 

The new compact RP is available in all standard CrewCom frequency bands, including 900MHz (where applicable) and 2.4GHz (worldwide). 

Although small in stature (at least 25 percent smaller in size and 30 percent lighter than most beltpacks in use today), the CRP-C12 does not compromise on performance, as it is fully featured and includes support for up to two user-specific assignable conferences with a simultaneous dual-listen option, the company reported.

CrewWare is Pliant’s ground-breaking software tool created specifically for CrewCom system construction, device control, and live monitoring. CrewWare 2.0 is the first substantial update since its introduction of CrewCom in 2017.

AUBURN, Ala.—Pliant Technologies will feature its new miniature in-ear style headset and new accessories with long-distance, long-term power options during the 2024 NAB Show, April 13-17, in Las Vegas.

The new PHS-IEHU uses silicone ear concha locks and earbuds for either left ear or right ear orientation. It also allows use of custom ear molds designed specifically for the individual user’s ear from custom ear mold manufacturers Coda Room Audio and Sensaphonics, the company said.

The brand features two new accessories the PAC-RTM-SMU universal single RT mounting bracket and in conjunction with battery specialist Indipro Tools, the PBT-VMNT radio transceiver battery adapter, for its CrewCom lineup of radio transceivers (RTs), it said.

The in-ear headset offers an unobtrusive, miniature electret microphone and windscreen with a small flexible boom. Models supporting various connectivity allow for use with most industry-standard intercom beltpacks via 4- or 5-pin XLR connections as well as 6-pin female Mini XLR connectivity. There also is an option for dual 3.5mm connectivity, allowing for use with MicroCom M or MicroCom XR models. An optional PTT (push-to-talk) button will also be available for applications where external remote momentary talk on/off operation is required, the company said. 

The PAC-RTM-SMU universal single RT mounting bracket and PBT-VMNT radio transceiver battery adapter can transform any current CrewCom RT into one that will allow placement of an RT with connectivity to fiber where no AC power is accessible, providing about 16 hours of RT battery life, it said.

Users can slide on any V-Mount battery to Pliant’s PBT-VMNT battery adapter and plug it directly to the 48V port of any CrewCom RT. The new battery adapter also allows use of any industry-standard V-mount battery, which can be provide eight hours or more of RT operation depending on battery size/capacity. The PAC-RTM-SMU universal RT mount supports Manfrotto-style Hex, ¼-inch-20, 5/8-inch-27 and 3/8-inch-16 mount thread sizes, the company said.

AMSTERDAM—Professional wireless intercom solutions provider Pliant Technologies has announced that it will be showcasing its new CrewCom firmware and software update, v1.14 at IBC 2023 (Stand 10.C53). 

The latest update includes several enhancements to CrewCom’s extensive capabilities. These improvements include the support of two additional hardware devices, convenient new features and several key improvements to CrewWare control software to strengthen the user experience.

With the new v1.14 firmware update, CrewCom now supports the addition of the new IP-rated lineup of Radio Transceivers (RTs), and the current CrewCom CRP-12 series of Radio Packs (RPs). CrewWare v1.14 includes a unique UI display in the system diagram of CrewWare that automatically detects the new IP-rated RT hardware and shows when it is in use, as well as the indication of corresponding new model numbers in the detail and device list views, the company said.

“The ability to now chose from three unique Radio Packs with an existing CrewCom system adds a greater level of flexibility for existing and new customers,” said Gary Rosen, vice president of global sales for Pliant Technologies. “We look forward to sharing these important updates with this year’s IBC attendees.”

Specifically for the CRP-12 Radio Packs, (previously available only for the CB2 system), this new release also adds dual listen/single talk functionality, giving users the ability to simultaneously listen to two pre-selected conferences on a single volume belt pack while also allowing them to talk on either one of those conferences. Software UI additions and modifications have also been made to display the new Radio Pack support as well as to indicate dual listen/single talk capabilities, the company said. 

Using the new Ping Function feature, it is now possible to activate, from within the software, a device location function called Ping on both the RTs as well as the RPs. For the RT, when activating ping, both the top ping light and the mode LED on the bottom of the transceiver will blink to facilitate the location of a specific device. For the RP, when activated, ping will cause the backlight of the LCD display (or LEDs in the case of the CRP-12) to blink until deactivated by the operator. In order to facilitate the location of a specific RP or RT, ping indications remain latched on until the device has been found and the operator manually disables the function, Pliant Technologies reported. 

Additionally, the CrewWare system’s display of the Radio Transceiver now has the added ability to quickly see the status of each individual device’s antenna selection. It will now graphically indicate if it is in Dual (two antennas) or Single (Left or Right) modes.

The new CrewCom v1.14 firmware upgrade, which includes the new features and updates, is free of charge to all users and is available for direct download from the Pliant Technologies website.

The latest addition to the MicroCom family, the new headset combines the high sound quality, range and budget-friendly price point of MicroCom XR with the comfortable fit, exceptional noise isolation and flip-up microphone muting technology of the SmartBoom PRO headset—but without the wire, the company said.

The new headset is available with a Drop-in-Charger [PBT-HSXRC-66] for an all-in-one style headset. Up to six individual headsets (single or dual) can be put on the charger without having to remove their battery or plug in a USB charging cord to the headset itself. Users can also drop in up to six additional batteries (sold separately) for simultaneous wireless headset and spare battery charging capabilities, it said.

Communications systems have always been a necessity in broadcasting but, often, they were something that was almost taken for granted. But this year’s NAB Show gave a major platform to new intercom technologies and products.

Many of the big technological trends and fashions in broadcasting do not always cover all the technical aspects of acquisition and production. The spotlight at most NAB Shows over the last decade has been firmly on 4K, HDR and location to post-production workflows. 

With the possible exception of the last of those, that focus has excluded intercom but this always important, sometimes overlooked area is now fully on trend thanks to the high profile of the cloud, virtualization and remote operations at the major broadcast technology exhibitions of the last few years.

That was certainly the case at this year’s Vegas gathering, where Remote Integration (REMI) based on IP—and increasingly involving the cloud and virtualized systems—was addressed by the main intercom manufacturers.

Bridging Old with the New
“People continue to look for new ways to communicate,” said Kris Koch, business development director for Broadcast Network and Media Production at Clear-Com. “In particular, REMI workflows were a common topic at NAB. Our customers require us to be flexible in supporting their workflow, whatever that may be. Often we need to bridge older technologies with new IP based workflows, so while AoIP [audio over IP] has become something of a standard in new designs, most customers need to transition into IP workflows.”

Clear-Com’s Arcadia Central Station received particular attention this year—the IP-based communications platform is scalable and can integrate components from the company’s HelixNet, FreeSpeak and Encore ranges, as well as third party Dante AoIP devices, to provide communications for fly-away systems and OB trucks. Also on show were new features for the Eclipse HX digital matrix, including Dynam-EC real time production software and V-Series Iris IP-based user panels.

Telos Alliance made the brave—or foolhardy—decision to give live demonstrations of its Infinity Virtual Intercom Platform (VIP), linked together with other AoIP products from the company’s portfolio, plus telephony devices, on what Martin Dyster, vice president of business development, described as “one big LAN”.

He acknowledges that it was a “bit of a leap of faith” to stage such a demo at a trade show but that the company wanted to illustrate how a hardware system could be virtualised in software and deployed on a computer or mobile phone with built-in audio, including a USB microphone and loudspeaker.

Telos VIP is now featured as part of other companies’ cloud infrastructures, including Grass Valley AMPP (Agile Media Processing Platform), Vizrt’s Viz Now and the Panasonic KAIROS IT/IP system.

“It has found favor from some big hitters that have built end-to-end virtual platforms using a SaaS [software as a service] model,” explains Dyster. “VIP doesn’t need a lot of bandwith, it can work as a four-wire intercom for both on-prem and cloud with about 32 Kbps in each direction.” He adds that the audio quality produced has now led to customers wanting to use the system for both contribution links and voice-overs.

Matrix Advances
Intracom Systems’ VCOM virtual matrix is another software-based communications platform aimed at both on-premises and in-cloud implementation. During the NAB Show, the company highlighted v7 of the system, which included new features for selecting talk and listen keys, which can now also be activated using Elgato’s Stream Deck control interface, and managing user access using Single Sign On (SSO). 

Intracom chief executive Stephen Brand observes that in the current “crowded intercom field,” broadcast customers are looking for features, functions and overall technologies that will “save them money, simplify workflows and keep them ahead of the curve in a highly competitive environment where pristine communications are critical.”

AEQ has taken a matrix-less approach with its Xpeak system. This cloud-based intercom is particularly aimed at live and remote production applications, with Sales Director Gustavo Robles adding that REMI is now a “major trend in the market.” New from AEQ this year was the TP9116 rack-mounted intercom panel, featuring 16 four-way lever keys, with two functions on each lever, and IP connectivity over either Dante or AES67. Robles said a desktop version could be available by IBC.

Riedel Communications launched its Audio Monitoring App (AMA) for the 1200 SmartPanels range at the show. Product Manager Kristina Uhlitz comments that this is capable of running “several apps simultaneously” and attracted interest from many of the visitors to the company’s booth. 

Also introduced were the Dante UIC card for the Artist system and new firmware for Bolero and its integrated charging station. “It provides visual data of registration and charging status and lets you upgrade all devices in the charger at once,” she added.

RTS introduced the DSPK-4 digital speaker station, part of the RTS Digital Partyline intercom range. Offering hybrid functionality in desktop, flush-mount and wall-mounted versions, it can operate in party line mode with the OMS (OMNEO Main Station) or as a portable key panel in conjunction with a RTS matrix, either ODIN or ADAM.

Competitor Compatibility
Many intercom manufacturers now offer compatibility with competitors’ systems. Studio Technologies’ new Model 545DC is compatible with Clear-Com party line products, while the Model 545DR, launched alongside it, offers a single two-channel interface for the RTS TW two-channel analog intercom circuit series.

Both can connect to Dante-equipped matrix intercoms, digital audio processors and mixing consoles and can work with Studio Technologies’ Dante-enabled belt packs, intercom stations and audio engines. Also new was the Model 342 intercom station, which can be used in multiple modes with a Dante audio matrix or as a point-to-point system involving two units.

Pliant Technologies continued to fly the flag for wireless-based intercom and debuted a new IP-rated radio transceiver for its CrewCom range. Available in both 900MHz and 2.4GHz versions, these are aimed at live broadcast and events where outdoor placement of transceivers is necessary. 

Also on the booth was the new CCU-08 CrewCom control unit, which allows operators to use up to eight four-wire ports and provides the same features as the existing CCU-22 and CCU-44. Gary Rosen, vice president of global sales said there was still interest in wireless communications and while the cloud and AoIP have found favor for remote production, when it came to on-site installations “a dedicated and reliable intercom system remains key for most users.”

Whatever the connectivity medium, intercoms certainly showed significant advances at the 2023 NAB Show. 

AUBURN, Ala.—Pliant Technologies has released CrewCom V1.14 firmware with new enhancements, including support for two additional hardware devices, new features and improved CrewWare control software. It will show the release at InfoComm 2023 in Orlando, June 10-16. 

The release brings new support for the IP-rated lineup of radio transceivers (RTs) and the current CrewCom CRP-12 series of radio packs (RPs). Improvements to CrewWare include a unique UI display in the system diagram of CrewWare that automatically detects the new IP-rated RT hardware. It also adds display of when an RT hardware device is being used as well as the corresponding model numbers in the details and device list views, the company said.

“We look forward to providing these important updates and showcasing them for the first time at InfoComm,” says Gary Rosen, vice president of global sales at the company. “As we expand on our CrewCom line, we continually provide hardware support for the newest products. Additionally, the ability to now chose from three unique RPs with an existing CrewCom system adds a greater level of flexibility for existing and new customers.”

For the CRP-12 radio packs, the release adds dual listen/single talk functionality, giving users the ability to listen to two pre-selected conferences simultaneously on a single volume belt pack while also allowing them to talk on either one of those conferences. The company also has modified the software UI to display the new RP support as well as to indicate dual listen/single talk capabilities, it said.

The new Ping function makes it possible to activate the location function from within the software on both RTs and RPs. When activating Ping for the RT, both the top ping light and the mode LED on the bottom of the transceiver will blink to make finding the specific location of a device possible, it said.

For the RP, when activated, Ping causes the backlight of the LCD display (or LEDs in the case of the CRP-12) to blink until deactivated by the operator. To facilitate the location of a specific RP or RT, ping indications remain latched on until the device has been found and the operator manually disables the function, it said. 

The CrewWare system’s display of the Radio Transceiver also now has the added ability to see the status of each individual device’s antenna selection. It will now graphically indicate whether it is in Dual (two antennas) or Single (Left or Right) modes, it said.

LAS VEGAS—Pliant Technologies will showcase its CCU-08 CrewCom control unit at the 2023 NAB Show, April 15-19, in Las Vegas.

The latest addition to its CrewCom intercom system, the CCU-08 can be used with up to eight 4-Wire ports while retaining the same features of the existing companion CCU-22 and CCU-44 products, the company said.

As with those units, the CCU-08 does not have a radio and is frequency-agnostic. It can control and monitor any device across CrewNet regardless of the radio frequency bands being used. Combined with CrewCom Radio Transceivers, the new unit supports up to 82 Radio Packs, 18 in Normal mode and 64 in the new High Density mode, across all RF bands. Up to four CCU-08 Control Units can be used in one system for applications requiring many users, it said.

Broadcasting is still behind IT when it comes to cloud adoption but there are parts of media and entertainment—playout and post-production in particular—that have embraced the virtual platform as a way of decentralizing and streamlining operations. The same, however, cannot be said for intercoms, an area that still has high demands in terms of real-time connectivity and is mostly holding on to its established hardware-based methods.

As with so many things in life and work, the pandemic changed the view of many on this point. Among them were several broadcast organizations, says Martin Dyster, vice president of business development for TV at Telos Alliance. "During the last 18 months or so we've found that broadcasters are increasingly looking at cloud and virtual intercom solutions in order to provide an effective means to communicate as they develop new broadcast production workflows," he says.

A 'Waiting Market'
To meet this emerging requirement, Telos introduced the Infinity Virtual Intercom Platform (VIP) in 2020, which, Dyster says, found a "waiting market." VIP can work entirely in the cloud when fully deployed on a VPC (virtual private cloud) platform. This has proved to be a major turnabout for the intercom market, which, despite wireless connections and mobile apps, continues to rely on hardware infrastructures. Because of this, Dyster feels there will continue to be resistance from other manufacturers because working in the cloud does not align with their core businesses.

"You can see a similar reaction within the audio mixing console market where the brands that have led the field in large, medium and small format mixers for decades have not embraced virtualization," he says. "In both the intercom and mixing technology sectors, it seems the door has been left wide open for more agile and forward-thinking companies to bring new products to market that fulfill the needs of broadcasters who are embracing cloud production. I cannot believe it will be long before at least one of the hardware brand leaders in each sector breaks rank and shows their hand."

Telos' Infinity and the Unity system—which is set up online through a web portal and supports a single group of users sharing six party-line channels—are the main intercoms to be fully hosted in the cloud. Among those still adhering to established hardware methodologies for intercom is Pliant Technologies. "Intercom has always been a communications technology for collaborative working group in real time," says vice president of global sales Gary Rosen. "The cloud is really best used [for] non-real time storage and retrieval. It's not really suited for this application."

Live Production Demands
The main objection to using the cloud from traditional, hardware-oriented intercom developers is the potential for a complete loss of communications if something does not work properly.

"When everything is down, the intercom still needs to work," comments Nico Lewis, senior sales manager for EMEA at RTS Intercoms. "Consider a live television show: A camera fails or a microphone fails and the audio operator can't hear the guest. ‘No problem, we'll just tell the technical director to take another camera and the audio operator will ask the stage manager to get a spare microphone to the talent.’ 

“But—'What do you mean, no one can communicate these simple instructions?'” Lewis asks rhetorically. “Intercom is the critical component and therefore we wait [in using the] cloud till the last moment. Or maybe do not do it and keep it connected in our established way using OMNEO [RTS' media networking system]."

Lewis does concede that "the future will tell," about cloud adoption for comms, however Clear-Com sees the eventual move to cloud as unavoidable.

"We have been watching the deployment of new cloud-based production tools with interest and feel that adding comms to these workflows is inevitable," says Kris Koch, business development director for broadcast networks and media production for the company. "The urgent nature of comms, [however], and the need for it to be always available, especially when nothing else is, creates a challenge. It becomes critical to not only deliver the features our customers need through the cloud but also to provide reliability and redundancy so broadcasters can operate independently in times of emergency or technical problems."

At Riedel UK, sales manager Nacho Lee observes that the cloud will "probably" become part of intercom but not yet. "There are still concerns [over] reliability and security," he says. "Most of our clients in education, theater and even broadcast still tend to have an isolated intercom island, separate to their IT network, [which is] mainly for independent control as well as safety reasons."

Gustavo Robles, sales director at AEQ, agrees that there is a lot of talk in the comms market about cloud, saying it is "the future," with the company already working on new units and systems. "Until now we [have been using] VPN [virtual private network] and a dedicated hardware central matrix but the idea is to move far from this and offer the same specifications but totally virtual," he explains.

All or Nothing
In terms of reliability in the cloud, Dyster acknowledges that losing connection to a virtual platform would "leave you without intercom," but adds that if a production was using a wider cloud system, its problems would be bigger than just communications.

"Equally, if you are using remote intercom panels with a matrix-based system and relying on the internet to connect them, losing that connection would also take your comms out," he adds. "AWS provides redundant solutions that safeguard against the former event but, like anything, there could be exceptions where you are vulnerable and AWS has certainly had the odd 'blip.'"

The answer to whether or not the cloud does become part of intercom systems—or the entire infrastructure—could lie in recent history. There was some resistance to audio over IP (AoIP) as the basis for comms but now that is well established. Matrices and traditional party lines have not gone away yet but AoIP, particularly in uncompressed form, is being widely used for intercom, with Dante, AES67 and SMPTE ST 2110-30 providing the backbone for many installations. If the cloud follows a similar route, then its wider-scale adoption seems more likely.

AUBURN, Ala.—Pliant Technologies has announced the addition of Repeater and Roam modes to its MicroCom XR digital wireless intercom as well as two-channel, lightweight, compact MicroCom 900XR receiver.

AUBURN, Ala.—Pliant Technologies has released the latest firmware update for its CrewCom wireless intercom systems and devices, v1.8. Among the new features resulting from the update, according to Pliant, are refined communications for network devices and an enhanced user experience.

The 1.8 firmware update includes the new CrewWare management feature and a new two-level user rights feature. There is also improved battery monitoring for CrewCom devices and the updated firmware does not require users to power cycle remote devices when power cycling the system’s control unit. In addition, mixed band options on 900 MHz transceivers are now available and GPO relays can be used.

LAS VEGAS—Pliant Technologies has a new firmware for its CrewCom wireless intercom system that will be the headliner of its booth at the 2019 NAB Show. But there are a number of additional new accessories and updates for the CrewCom that will also be on display.

One part of the new firmware upgrade for the CrewCom models is the incorporation of new Oceania 900MHz models. Some of the other new technology that can be utilized with the updated CrewCom system includes the SmartBoom LITE headset, the Drop-In charger, Fiber Hub and FleXLR connector.

The SmartBoom LITE headset now features an improved dynamic noise-cancelling microphone with wider frequency response, increased sensitivity, an enhanced speaker with wider frequency response, reduced distortion and an updated foam ear pad.

With the Drop-In charger, six Radio Packs plus six additional batteries can be charged in the same device.

Also, the new FleXLR gender adapter addition gives users the flexibility to connect headsets to devices with non-matching four- and five-pin XLRs, such as CrewCom radio packs or control units, while also offering a choice of a larger range of compatible headsets.

NEW YORK--CP Communications, a provider of live event production services expanded its RF presence at this year’s MLB All-Star Game at Nationals Park in Washington DC.

With a crew of 27 — its largest yet to support the All-Star Game—CP returned with for the 18 consecutive year with its RFHD7 53-foot production truck, which served as the central communications and distribution point for each client and system involved in the broadcasts and events.

The CP Communications team managed and coordinated all RF activities for the global All-Star Game, network studio shows, Home Run Derby, and a Red Carpet Show. Additionally, and for the first time, CP Communications provided RF support for various digital and streaming productions. The company also provided a production kit for PLAY Ball Park, an adjacent venue that served a free interactive center during All-Star Week with baseball celebrity appearances, adult baseball and softball games, youth tournaments, batting cages and more.

“The events surrounding the All-Star Game are different each year depending on each client’s needs, which results in strategic adjustments in crew and technology,” Michael Mason, president of CP Communications. “With RFHD7 as our resource distribution center, our 27-member crew worked hard to meet intensive scheduling deadlines across multiple venues, and eliminate disruptions in the RF spectrum that would adversely affect signal quality. The latter included clearance of 420 RF frequencies for wireless communications alone.”

The complete RF infrastructure across all events and venues included 50,000 feet of fiber-optic cable to support multiple camera feeds (including 14 RF camera feeds), video monitors, data communications, transmission links and an extensive Dante networking solution from Audinate among other systems. Dante networks were used across several events to carry digital intercom, IFB, and microphone feeds, with a separate headend to support analog audio needs.

The technical infrastructure employed much of the same equipment as in previous years on a larger scale. However, CP Communications this year added a Pliant CrewCom intercom systemfor productions associated with the Home Run Derby, as well as All-Star Game ceremonies included the National Anthem, God Bless America and the 7th Inning Stretch.

“The Pliant system enabled us to provide a much wider area of coverage,” said Mason. “The antennas in this system run data streams over Cat5, which gives it a lighter architecture that is very easy to deploy overall. We deployed antennas across several positions to maximize coverage, and even integrated all communications carried over Pliant with scoreboard control operations.”

Other specific highlights of the RF transmission infrastructure include:

• Two RF cameras, 39 RF microphones and an EFX audio-submix package for Fox Sports’ All-Star Game and Media Day video/audio needs

• Nine parabolic dishes and 80 RF radios for Fox Sports’ All-Star Game and Media Day communications requirements

• Four RF cameras, six Sennheiser head-worn microphones and six stereo RF IFBs for the ESPN Home Run Derby production and Baseball Tonight onsite studio show

• Twenty RF microphones (eight player, eight EFX, four handheld with talkback, and four in-ground) and four RF IFBs for the Home Run Derby production

• RF Steadicam, handheld and batting cage POV cameras for network pre- and post-showproductions

• Dante Audio over IP networks for the All-Star Game, Media Day, Red Carpet Show and network pre- and post-show productions, carrying Shure Axient Digital and other 1.4 GHz microphone feeds

• A Sony 4300 RF handheld camera for live streamed productions, with a WaveCentral integrated transmitter and paint receiver

Beyond Dante, Mason and his team also employed MADI and analog audio networks depending on each client’s infrastructure. “By keeping everything in the digital realm as often as possible, we eliminate the problems that haunt analog audio such as cable management, power distribution, and hum and buzz,” he said. “However, we’re always fully prepared to work with any client’s infrastructure across analog and digital.”

BURBANK, CA–Bexel an NEP Broadcast Services Company, says it has completed a “major purchase” of audio and RF intercom inventory and plans to invest over $1.5m on new audio technology this year.

Bexel has invested heavily in RF microphone systems, primarily from Sennheiser, Lectrosonics and Shure. The new systems comply with new FCC spectrum requirements and provide increased flexibility with wide-band capable systems. The investment includes Sennheiser EM 3732-II high-end RF receivers, SKM 5200/5212-II world class RF transmitters, Lectrosonics DRM encrypted receiver modules for digitally encrypted secure audio plus SMWB transmitter and Venue frames and DUET MTR IFB transmitters. Shure includes ADX1 and ACX2FD dual transmitters plus AD4QUS 4 channel receivers.

The company has also purchased advanced RF intercom systems comprising of Clear-Com’s FreeSpeak II, Radio Active Designs RAD UV-1G and Pliant Technologies Crewcom wireless intercom systems. These technologies provide unique and different approaches to the RF spectrum that enable a variety of solutions to meet the demands of this new, complex frequency space, as well as complying with the new FCC guidelines.

In addition, Bexel is increasing its investment in their custom Sideline Audio/Video Cart, a plug-and-play solution for streamlining the acquisition of audio and video feeds on the field. The self-contained, mobile cart is designed to be set-up within minutes on the sideline or the end-zone of a sports field. It is equipped with single-mode fiber, SMPTE hybrid and copper cables, and hydra cable assemblies, and it enables MADI audio and wireless audio and video transmissions. 

With the company’s latest investment, the carts have been upgraded to include Shure Axient or Sennheiser RF microphones, Radio Active Designs (RAD) or Clear-Com RF intercom systems, Sennheiser shotgun microphones and Klover Mik-26 Parabolic microphones. This solution is is fully customizable to each client’s specifications.

ORLANDO, FLA.—The Golf Channel reached into its bag and pulled out some additional Pliant Technologies Tempest wireless intercom systems to use for its latest production suite, the Newsroom. With this latest Tempest system put into place, the Golf Channel now has five BaseStations in use to cover its four studio areas, which includes the Newsroom.

The Tempest system being utilized in the Newsroom is the Tempest2400, which is able to operate in the 2.4 GHz band worldwide and the 900 MHz band in North America. The Tempeset2400 does not require frequency coordination and isn’t subject to typical interference issues with analog RF signals.

The intercom system has a Seamless Routing feature that can be applied to a Tempest BeltStation. Similar to cell phone operation, Seamless Routing allows BeltStation users to move from one BaseStation’s coverage are to another without user intervention. If the signal data quality between the BeltStation and BaseStation drops to a certain level, the BeltStation will search for a better RF connection. A single BeltStation can roam between as many as 16 different RF coverage areas.

The Seamless Roaming feature is possible through Pliant’s ZSync technology, which provides a synchronization signal that coordinates the frequency hopping patterns of all connected BaseStations. The ZSync Dongle or ZSync Parallel Signal Generator can be used depending on the application.

The Golf Channel has been utilizing the Tempest system since 2007.

AUBURN, ALA.—For the past 25 years, CoachComm has been a provider of intercom systems to major college football programs. According to Gary Rosen, the company’s global sales manager, CoachComm has a 97 percent market share of NCAA 1A football programs, including marquee name schools like Alabama, UCLA and Notre Dame. However, when CoachComm sought to expand their offerings to the professional market with its Tempest wireless communication line of products it encountered a bit of a hurdle.

“Many people would say, ‘we don’t really do coaching, we’re not sure why you’re coming to us,’” said Rosen. “We realized we needed a name change that helped illustrate to the industry that we were stepping up our efforts for the professional market, so Pliant Technologies was formed.”

Pliant Technologies is a new division of CoachComm that will focus specifically on the professional market. This will include broadcast and live production, as well as other markets like nuclear power plants, hospitals, board rooms, etc. The flagship product for Pliant Technologies is Tempest wireless intercom.

Tempest came about as a result of CoachComm’s CEO and Founder Peter Amos recognizing the FCC’s adjustment of frequencies and rules regarding UHF spectrum about 10 years ago could become a big issue for all RF devices. As a result, the company began to develop a new product that would fit with these new regulations. During the process, Amos realized the same RF technology being used for the sports market could be applicable to the professional market.

When Tempest was first released in 2009 for the professional market, CoachComm distributed the product on a non-direct basis. While Rosen described it as a successful relationship, he said “we decided this summer [2015] it was time for us to take back the management of our own distribution for Tempest.” One of the reasons he says contributed to this decision was the preparation of a launch for a new set of products that are set to premiere at the 2016 NAB Show.

While Pliant Technologies will have its own products and target audience, the company still falls under the larger CoachComm umbrella. It will operate out of CoachComm’s office in Auburn, Ala., and is made up of the same leadership, including Amos as CEO and founder, Rosen as global sales manager, Mark Rehfuss as regional sales manager, and Debbie Hamby as marketing director.

“People are familiar with the Tempest name much more than the corporations behind it,” said Rosen. So whether it is known as CoachComm or Pliant, Rosen stresses the goal of the company is to make sure customers “are getting the same support they’re used to getting from CoachComm and Tempest.”
