HATFIELD, U.K.—New research from PlayBox Technology UK suggests that many media companies and creators are lagging in the creation of OTT platforms for their content but that there is rapidly growing interest in establishing one to better monetize their content. 

The PlayBox survey of content owners and creators from broadcasters to YouTubers and vloggers found that 83% of respondents said that they did not currently operate an OTT platform for their content. 

But 63% expressed significant interest in establishing one. Primary drivers for this interest were to retain control of their own content, to capture audience data, and most important to open up new monetization avenues, Playbox reported. 

“What is clear from this small but significant study is that there is a real desire to provide a channel for content direct to the audience,” said Philip Neighbour, COO at PlayBox Technology. “Naturally, these people want to receive a fair reward for their work, with roughly the same number of respondents seeing subscriptions (33%) and advertising (30%) as the primary source of income.”

“This very much underlines the way that PlayBox has been developing in recent times,” Neighbour continued. “We have taken our traditional broadcast channel management and playout technology and extended it to provide all the functionality you need to build and operate an online presence, through cloud-hosted services like OTT Stream. LONDON—The channel in a box provider PlayBox Technology UK has launched a new version of its market-leading AirBox playout and streaming software. 

AirBox Mega ICX delivers playout capabilities in a feature-rich automation package and a simple user interface, the company said.

HATFIELD, U.K.—PlayBox Technology announced that it has recently installed an automated playout system for Public Broadcasting Corporation of Jamaica (PBCJ), the company said.

The new integrated playout installation for PBCJ supports daily 24-hour broadcasts with automated output that allows for live events to be inserted into the schedule and broadcast as needed, the company said.

The system is providing quantifiable operational and economic benefits for PBCJ, a government agency with its transmission and production center in Kingston, PlayBox Neo said. 

“PlayBox met all our technical requirements, interfacing into our studio complex without problems,” said Maurice Marshall, Technical Operations Manager for PBCJ. “Most importantly, it gave us an uncompromised high-quality output and reliable unattended performance, allowing us to make the best use of our operators and engineers. SEATTLE—Advanced Broadcast Solutions recently commissioned a new broadcast playout system for the Washington headquarters of KBS-WATV and tapped the AirBox Neo from PlayBox Technology to serve as the core system.

KBS-WATV is a digital cable network that distributes programming for the Korean American community in Western Washington. It offers Korean programming with English subtitles, plus live coverage of Korean news.

The AirBox Neo system configured for KBS-WATV includes a TitleBox Neo graphic preparation station and ListBox Neo scheduler, all with full protection and fast switchover from main to backup. ABS also supplied KBS-WATV with an eight-input Blackmagic multiviewer switcher and SNS media storage management. ABS says the entire system takes up a single rack in the KBS-WATV apparatus room and is operated from the channel’s production control suite, where all available inputs and output channels can be monitored.

With the AirBox Neo system, KBS-WATV can transmit SD, HD and UHD to a wide area of Washington state.

NEW YORK—PlayBox Technology will head to the Big Apple for this year’s NAB Show New York with the latest additions of its range of broadcast playout and channel branding products. Scheduled for launch at IBC2017 in September, Neo TS Time Delay is a 1U IP-based delay server for single or multichannel time zone shift and disaster-recovery applications. It provides fully transparent delay of IP transport streams such as DVB/ATSC MPEG broadcast-quality compressed video and audio.

The same unit can simultaneously process a multicast MPEG stream with its own playout time settings (zero plus one and two hours for example). TIRANA, ALBANIA—Albania broadcaster and IPTV service provider Tring TV has brought in new PlayBox Technology to upgrade its playout infrastructure. The company’s CloudAir online services and AirBox Neo servers are now installed to provide the necessary resources for Tring TV to distribute its 27 TV channels.

With the update to AirBox Neo and CloudAir, Tring TV can now deliver full HD service via the Albania national digital terrestrial network, as well as from satellite and IP streaming. The AirBox servers are located at the broadcaster’s headquarters in Tirana and are supplemented with CloudAir for an ecosystem that integrates virtual playout and can handle SDI or IP workflow. Tring can access the ClourAir interface from any location plus 24/7 transmission continuity and strong program storage.

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA.—Van Duke is moving up the ranks at Playbox Technology with the company’s announcement that he has been promoted from U.S. sales manager to U.S. director of operations. Duke will now be in charge of all Playbox Technology U.S. sales and customer support activity.

Then there is the SafeBox Neo content and playlist replicator, which replicates remote content to local playout server folders for safe transmission. Files from third-party broadcast content servers are natively supported.

Titlebox can deliver on-air graphics that can be controlled interactively. Templates can be configured to match specific requirements, without need for subsequent manual adjustment. It also provides total control during on-air session, including text selection, running speed and transitions. Tata Communications designed its cloud-based broadcast playout service for broadcasters and content providers. It is built on the company’s global fiber network and data center infrastructure; the system includes features like file transfer services and a networked-based video transcoding and delivery service.

The CloudAir from PlayBox, meanwhile, is a universal TV playout and streaming system designed for continuous unattended operation. The system can edit any clip in the playlist, except the one being played; it can also change the order of the playlist. A Live Show clipboard allows insertion and/or execution of events or live streams. CloudAir accepts MPEG-1/2/H.264, HDV and DV streams from any platform providing AVI, MPEG, WMV, Quick Time or MXF content. The system also supports files from third-party systems.

With the integration of the CloudAir, Tata Communications’ broadcast playout service offers an OPEX-based service that enables broadcasters to target areas like production of original content.

LONDON – With so many social media sites out there, PlayBox Technology aims to offer users a way to streamline it all into one place with its SocialMediaBox. Available as a standalone product or integrated with the TitleBox channel branding system, SocialMediaBox allows comments from multiple social media sites to be quickly processed into a single broadcast stream. PlayBox will launch the full production version at the upcoming 2015 IBC Show.

Using a standard Web browser, operators can use SocialMediaBox to view preconfigured feeds from various sources, adding desired posts to a customized list. Comments can then be edited and published immediately, or held for approval before being used in live programs.

A single SocialMediaBox account can be used by several TV shows and channels. Multiple accounts can be assigned and be able to create custom feeds and set each feed as private.
