                                <p>A decade ago the BBC natural history series, Planet Earth, mesmerized viewers worldwide with some of the world’s most amazing wildlife footage and HD imagery of any kind yet broadcast in HD. On Saturday, 2/18, BBC (America) debuted Planet Earth II, hailed as a milestone in 4K production, (despite being broadcast in HD in North America).</p><figure class="van-image-figure pull-" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="PyNm3rXTrCVk3fGJFz6otk" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/PyNm3rXTrCVk3fGJFz6otk.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/PyNm3rXTrCVk3fGJFz6otk.jpg" align="" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class="pull-"></p></div></div></figure><p><em>In Ladakh, India, high in the Himalayas, the local team set up and check on a camera-trap, positioned on a route frequently used by snow-leopards crossing these mountains. The camera traps are left out for many months to capture close up shots of these elusive animals.</em></p><p>For BBC, a world leader in natural history production, the time was ripe for a sequel. “It’s been a decade [since ‘Planet Earth’] and we thought it would be interesting to see what has changed since,” said Series Producer Tom Hugh-Jones. Filming techniques, technology, and our understanding of the natural world have moved on significantly since ‘Planet Earth,’ [PE], so the tenth (anniversary) felt like the right time to revisit this classic brand.”</p><p><strong>A CLOSER LOOK</strong></p><p>Planet Earth II (PEII) has a distinct and different look than PE, which embraced classic “blue chip” natural history production protocol wherein many animals were filmed from a distance, with long, telephoto lenses on large cameras, from hefty tripods and gyro-stabilized cineflex (camera) systems. By contrast, PEII is much more “in your face” with lots of wide angle shots and plenty of camera movement.</p><p>“You feel like the camera is moving with the animals,” said Mike Gunton, PEII executive producer. “It’s very fluid, very active. For example, you might see this wonderful lemur leaping through the forest. Before, we’d have filmed that from a distance, but here the lemur almost jumps over your shoulder and you’re moving with it.”</p><p>“If you want people to connect emotionally, it’s better for them to feel like they’re in close, within the action, observing thru a wide angle lens, from the animal’s point of view,” added Hugh-Jones.</p><p>This personal perspective is enabled by a new generation of smaller, often cheaper cameras with 4K sensors which can be deployed in many more challenging situations. Such gear was much more expensive and clunky a decade ago. But the killer app is a new genre of light, ultra-mobile gyro-based camera stabilizers which makes it feasible to literally shoot on the run, and at lower angles than typical human eye level.</p><p>“We all tried to get on the animals’ eye level, whether that be a penguin, a crab, or a female bird of paradise which views the male’s courtship display from above,” said Elizabeth White, producer of the first episode, “Islands.”</p><figure class="van-image-figure pull-" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="rcZmToGGRv6GP3KwLjSQKV" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/rcZmToGGRv6GP3KwLjSQKV.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/rcZmToGGRv6GP3KwLjSQKV.jpg" align="" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class="pull-"></p></div></div></figure><p><em>Chinstrap penguins and their chicks cover the slope of Zavodovski Island, an active volcano in the Southern Ocean. The island is just 9 square miles in size, but it hosts the largest penguin colony on earth—some 1.5 million penguins come here to breed in the Antarctic summer.</em></p><p>However, many PEII sequences intercut tripod-based closeups—many of them using Canon’s 50-1000mm lens (1.5X)—with wide angle mobile shots often done on MoVI stabilizers to blend the best of both methods. One example in “Islands” features hatchling marine iguanas in the Galapagos. “We witness the hatchlings running for their lives moments after hatching,” said Gunton. “The [MoVI-mounted] camera tracks towards them and suddenly a snake emerges from under the camera. Seconds later, there’s another snake and another one and another and then many more. Suddenly we’re running [with MoVI] with about 20 snakes that have been waiting for these iguanas to hatch. They’re literally coming out of the rocks, like something from ‘Indiana Jones;’ truly amazing.” This sequence concludes with a telephoto closeup of two plucky survivors nuzzling each other in brilliant 4K detail.</p><p><strong>COMPACT TECHNOLOGY</strong></p><p>The recent ability to support smaller cameras on compact, mobile stabilizers and use them to get up close to the animals—often at low angles—underlies the key goals of PEII. “One goal was getting the viewer closer, which meant strategic choices of stories and the technology to image them,” said White. “For ‘Islands,’ many animals like penguins weren’t familiar with humans, and some walked right up to our wide angle cameras for their closeup.”</p><p>An underlying goal of PEII was immersion in the animals’ habitat. Key to that was the dramatic evolution in camera technology since PE. “Today cameras are smaller, cheaper and there are really good stabilization systems available for them,” said White. “Now you can put a small, high-quality 4K camera on a drone, or on a handheld gimbal [MoVi/Ronin], or pull it up into the trees on a rope and still get smooth pictures, and give viewers the experience of walking alongside an animal, or being up in a tree with it.”</p><p>Most sequences in Islands and in other episodes, also included one or more aerials shot from drones by DJI and others, providing a broader perspective on the animal’s world. “We’re always looking to portray animals in a new light with a different perspective on the natural world,” said Hugh-Jones. “We knew we had to do something different with this series. Our aim was to make the whole event far more immersive, using the new tools now available.” A mere 10 years ago this subjective approach was much tougher to achieve. “‘Planet Earth’ used larger [HD] cameras mounted on large gyro-stabilizers in helicopters, enabling us to zoom in on animals from a kilometer up,” said Gunton. “What we’ve done for ‘Planet Earth II’ is to stick gyro-stabilization inside smaller cameras. The cameras have now come off the tripod and into the hands of cameramen and allow us to get closer to the animals, where helicopters cannot go.</p><p>“The visual signature of ‘Planet Earth II’ is keeping the camera very fluid and active, moving with the animals,” Gunton added. “In one episode a lemur almost jumps over your shoulder and as it does, you’re right with it; the camera is running with him.”</p><p>6K RED Dragons were widely used in PEII for their ruggedness and dazzling imaging. But their relative compactness also meant they could be stabilized with the new lightweight stabilizers, including MoVI 15s, even when well accessorized. DP Rob Drewett used that combo to capture a vast, fast-moving swarm of locusts.</p><p>“To shoot them, I had to keep up with them, so my gear had to be lightweight and agile. The RED EPIC Dragon with a MoVI was perfect. RED’s small form factor let me add accessories like RT Motion follow focus, REDMOTE, a Teradek [wireless video transmitter] and still be free to move around to get some really diverse tracking, jib and dynamic moves that I couldn’t get otherwise,” he said.</p><p>Another plus of shooting with Red Dragons in 6K was extra stabilization. “Shooting in 6K enabled me to use post stabilization and still deliver in 4K, future proofing my footage of one of the worst locust infestations ever recorded,” Drewett said.</p><p>Miniaturized 4K cameras also allowed the capture of unique footage via remotely-controlled cameras situated where shooters can’t go. “The animals almost operate the cameras, by triggering them as they walk by. Snow leopards are a good example,” said Gunton. “In Planet Earth, we were thrilled to find any snow leopards at all and those were filmed with a long telephoto lens a kilometer away.”</p><p>For PEII, the production crew staked out the same locations with dozens of remotely-operated (4K) cameras and filmed them only a few feet away, with some even brushing against the camera, according to Gunton. “In episodes like ‘Mountains’ there is a sense of a really unique and privileged perspective, that only our cameras can reveal,” he said. “We tried to give audiences really original, engaging storytelling by bringing the lives of animals and the places they inhabit to life.”</p>

Filmed in 40 different countries over three years, the footage was shot in 4K resolution with HDR and a wide color gamut spectrum, as well as 5.1 DTS-HD master audio.</p><p>In addition to more than 360 minutes of content from the original episodes, the Blu-ray and DVD will also offer “Planet Earth Diaries,” a behind-the-scenes look of each episode’s production team and the challenges they faced. These clips were also shot in 4K.</p><p>BBC Home Entertainment will offer the three-disc UHD set for $59.99 and the two-disc Blu-Ray and DVD set for $44.95 and $35.99 respectively.</p>

Its successor, “Planet Earth II,” was filmed in ultra-high definition (UHD) and features technological innovations including ultra-lightweight and portable camera stabilization technology that can be carried by camera operators and drones, higher-resolution camera traps for filming elusive animals, miniature camera grip equipment such as macro sliders, jibs and scopes, and 4K low-light cameras with greatly increased light sensitivity.</p><p>Narrated by David Attenborough, the six-part “Planet Earth II” premieres in the United States on Feb. 18 on BBC America. It debuted on BBC One in the United Kingdom in November. The series is a BBC Studios Natural History Unit production, co-produced with BBC America, ZDF, Tencent and France Télèvisions.</p><p>“Planet Earth II” was over three years in the making, with camera crews traveling to 40 different countries on 117 filming trips and 2,089 shooting days, tracking the living unseen world that inhabits the deserts, forests, islands, jungles and major cities of our planet.</p><p>Show producers harnessed advanced production technology to deliver an immersive feel to “Planet Earth II.” According to executive producer Mike Gunton, “Visually, where ‘Planet Earth’ took an almost God-like perspective and said, ‘Let’s look down on the Earth and see the scale of the planet,’ what ‘Planet Earth II’ is doing is saying, ‘Let’s get ourselves into the lives of the animals and see it from their perspectives.’ The visual signature of the series is that you feel like the camera is with the animals. (Photo by Chadden Hunter/BBC)</em><br/></p><p>Mark MacEwan is one of several veteran cinematographers deployed for the project. He was involved in the “Jungles” and “Urban” episodes, and served as primary filmmaker for the “Islands” content, where he captured a battle between two Komodo dragons, as well as a piece about an indri lemur used in the show’s main title sequence.</p><p>“From the beginning I was particularly interested in creating as immersive an experience as I could, using gimbal technology, sliders, jibs and such,” MacEwan says. “We used this immersive technology in the hope that—where the environment and the animals allowed—we could take viewers on a journey with the characters, rather than the more traditional long-lens observational style.”</p><p>MacEwan says the production crew tried to marry the long lens with the gimbal movements as much as possible. “I’ve always been interested in moving the camera and bringing the action to viewers, and jungle and urban environments are great for that since they’re so multidimensional. There’s so much to move through, layers upon layers, that they keep the eye and mind engaged. You can use movement to reveal characters and find characters, create mood and so much more.</p><p>“I worked exclusively with the RED Dragon camera,” MacEwan continues. “I love it. It gives me so many different options in frame rates and resolutions, and its size and form factor mean I can use it for long-lens shots, macro work, or even on my Freefly MoVI M15 [motorized gimbal stabilizer]. It’s incredibly versatile, and the fact that it’s modular is really useful. It proved to be one of the key pieces of equipment for me for the whole series.”</p><p>MacEwan’s primary lens during the shoot was a Canon 50-1000mm PL. “It gives me the ability to shoot an entire sequence—from wides to filling the frame with claws and teeth when needed. The glass is beautiful, and optically it’s the best long lens I’ve used. The only downside is that it’s heavy. What you gain in quality, you pay for in weight. (Photo by Ed Charles/BBC)</em><br/></p><p>MacEwan deployed a Canon 30-300 PL mount for jungle work, which he used to shoot the indri lemur in Madagascar. “The jungle is very thick. That lens is able to give me beautiful results even in low light. For macro work, the lens I always go to is the incredible ARRI/Zeiss Master Macro. I really wish I owned one of these. The bokeh is stunning and the lens is super-fast.”</p><p>Cinematographer John Aitchison worked on the “Jungles” and “Cities” episodes. He helped film the Wilson’s bird of paradise for “Jungles,” as well as hyenas in Ethiopia and catfish in France for “Cities.” Also for “Cities,” he filmed the peregrine falcons that call New York City home.</p><p>Like MacEwan, Aitchison says immersion was the name of the game. “The bird I was filming—along with Tim Laman and Edwin Scholes—was Wilson’s bird of paradise. It lives low in the forest; the males make courtship displays on the ground. We used a cable dolly to move the camera at the bird’s eye level to show the tangled nature of their home and the importance of patches of light, where trees have fallen. The camera was mounted on a DJI Ronin [three-axis gimbal], making it possible to pull the dolly along by hand without camera wobble. We could pan, tilt, focus, monitor and record the shot remotely. Tim and Ed also used a drone to show how tree falls create light gaps in the forest, which are useful to the birds,” Aitchison says.</p><p>In “Planet Earth II,” the display of the Wilson’s bird of paradise is revealed from its true perspective—from above—as the female would see it. The crucial shot of a male revealing his iridescent plumage to a female bird of paradise was captured using a Canon EOS 1D-C attached to a tree and operated remotely using a CamRanger wireless DSLR remote and an iPad. “This behavior had never been filmed from above before—or even seen, for that matter—and revealed exactly what the female birds see when they watch a male displaying. It was so dark on the forest floor. I shot on a Sony a7S, using a separate recorder to monitor and make the 4K recording, and a Canon Cine-Servo 50-1000mm lens attached by a Metabones Smart Adapter,” says Aitchison.</p><p>Aitchison filmed peregrine falcons hunting for prey among the iconic skyscrapers of Manhattan for “Cities.” Peregrines have made their homes in the city’s skyscrapers, which perform the role of cliff edges, the traditional habitat for peregrine falcons. New York City has the highest concentration of nesting peregrine falcons in the world. (Photo by Chadden Hunter/BBC)</em><br/></p><p>To shoot a massive swarm of locusts in Madagascar for the deserts episode, cinematographer Rob Drewett chose a RED Dragon Carbon Fiber camera package. Much of Drewett’s work, like MacEwan’s, was conducted with a Freefly MoVI M15, which he says allowed him to get stable footage up close to his subjects.</p><p>Though locusts are usually solitary, the crew filmed a swarm of several billion. A swarm of this size may only be seen once a decade and is one of the largest ever caught on film. The swarm in “Planet Earth II” stretched over 115 square miles. It could travel up to 62 miles and consume 44,000 tons of vegetation per day.</p><p>Drewett continues, “I used Nikon still lenses: 16mm, 20mm, 35mm and 85mm. I have a set of these since they’re all very light, and consistently so. When in the thick of the action, you don’t want to waste time rebalancing the gimbal, so having them nearly the same [weight] allows for a quick swing of the lens. With an RTMotion follow focus that I was able to control with a thumb wheel, I was a completely ‘independent’ cameraman, allowing me to keep up with the [locust] swarm. We also had a Teradek Bolt for wireless video, which allowed the director/producer to watch the footage from afar, and foolcontrol, an iOS app that allowed me to use RED Wi-Fi to access the internal menu for changes in frame rate and other settings,” Drewett says.</p><p>Despite the relative dearth of 4K consumers so far, Aitchison believes it’s good to be filming the natural history series at higher resolution “because the quality shines through. Even the least technically equipped audience can recognize it.”</p><p>He adds, “I do wish the viewfinders had kept pace with the cameras’ resolutions—especially as the new larger sensors mean depth of field has been halved, more or less, for any given magnification and light level. That makes it hard to follow focus on a hyena, for example, let alone a peregrine diving at 200 miles per hour. But there has been some progress recently. The latest RED viewfinder and those ARRI Amira and VariCam viewfinders are all great improvements.”</p>

Dish’s 4K broadcast will be available to <a href="https://www.dish.com/hopper-3/">Hopper 3</a> subscribers.<br/><br/>Dish also is offering an exclusive free preview of BBC America, from Feb. 14 through March 30.<br/><br/><em>Planet Earth II</em>, a sequel to the 2006 original, is an immersive exploration of the islands, mountains, jungles, grasslands, deserts and cities of the world.
