EUREKA, CA. — KVIQ, the CBS affiliate serving Humboldt County, Calif., has streamlined its workflow with a four-channel NVerzion NFinity broadcast video server with Source Switch technology.

KVIQ wanted to streamline its switching between live and recorded content with a non-hardware solution. NFinity’s Source Switch, a software solution that does not require an external router to change playout sources, offered the functionality KVIQ desired.

The feature allows live switching to any recorded content or full-screen bulletin and provides for simple transitions. The station will use Source Switch to monitor SCTE-35 triggers for the switch.

[Read: KPTS Reenergizes With NVerzion]

The station added the new NFinity video server and an automation workstation devoted to sister station KIEM. The NFinity will be used as the primary playout server for both stations.

Beside live events, NFinity will be used for all regular programming, including syndicated and network shows. NFinity interfaces with KVIQ’s network storage, satellite feed and existing NVerzion automation.

It centralizes various functions, simplifying the station’s workflow. KVIQ will use NFinity’s graphic overlay and EAS capabilities as well as the built-in NFinityView QC tool for quality assurance and quick edits.

“The new recording feature allows linear programming to be automatically segmented. The system watches for a black slate and automatically inserts a marker,” said Danny Fogle, KVIQ VP of operations. “This reduces editing and segmenting time required by master control.”

[Want more information like this? A PBS affiliate from its founding, KPTS carries all the beloved national programs one expects in addition to producing its own locally popular content — like the round-table discussion “Kansas Week,” and a local news program with an uplifting message, “Positively Kansas.”

NVerzion CloudPlay playout software

NVerzion worked with station personnel to craft a solution to replace end-of-life automation and video servers. The goal was a system that would address their core needs while maintaining flexibility for future expansion.

This new solution turned out to be an ambitious one for the station, consisting of three new NFinity broadcast video servers and a comprehensive NVerzion automation system, with four workstations running NVerzion control and automation software.

[Read: NVerzion NFinity Aids Lewis University With Broadcasting]

KPTS decided to go with NVerzion equipment for its flexibility and numerous options; all delivered at competitive prices with world-class customer service, according to the station.

According to station staff, the servers’ ability to handle audio sensing and mapping, graphics/bugs, EAS, and that it allows local content playback along with live pass-thru for each of their three channels, was an unbeatable package.

This new NVerzion workflow will be used as the primary on-air broadcast system. They will have automation running three playlists, and the NFinity servers performing record and playback — from local content with live pass-thru — with graphics, bugs and EAS. NFinity also gives production staff the ability to remotely play spots during production.

Jessica Rye, KPTS Broadcast Engineer, identified some major improvements over the existing system: “The automation interfaces with the new Myers BXF traffic system, whereas our outdated system did not. The servers have proven to have enough capabilities to handle more than just record and playback ... and the ability to use it as a channel with the option to switch between live and recorded content ... NVerzion’s Automation system has been a solid foundation with consistency, functionality, and reliability.”

[Want more information like this? Management of ZGS Communications emphasized its desire for operational uniformity across multiple channels before installation of the new system. The NVerzion automation system controls a 360 Maxx video server and Sigma Technology Systems 64x64 HD routing switcher.

The new automation system, which is tightly integrated with the existing Marketron traffic system, is used for commercial insertion. The interface of the new automation system and traffic system provides increased stability and reliability, the company said. The system receives cue tones from the network to trigger the start of each break and interfaces with the Evertz Namedropper for station IDs. NVerzion also customized its router control software to support manual operation, which is used by the stations for local broadcast news and entertainment.

According to Gary Faller, regional broadcast IT engineer for the ZGS stations in Florida, the NVerzion installation also provides for multiple trigger outputs and relies on the company’s NControl automation playlist manager.

More information is available on the NVerzion website.

No separate audio wiring is necessary, assuring high-quality audio alerting is delivered to the server along with Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) data, he said.

The integration makes it possible for broadcasters and cablecasters using the CloudNine server to meet their mandated EAS/CAP responsibilities from a traditional master control room or other playout environment, the company said.

NVerzion has integrated the DAS EAS/CAP messaging capabilities directly with NVerzion’s graphics overlay and audio playback systems. “It’s not an upstream keyer or a downstream keyer [in the CloudNine server],” said NVerzion President Scott Murphy in a phone interview. “We call it an inter-stream keyer.”

Stations are required to broadcast emergency alerts in text form and as audio, said DAS’s Robertson. “The way NVerzion did it is to provide a background color to represent the severity of the alert.”

NVerzion’s implementation inspects the essence of an incoming alert message and without creating a delay triggers a background color that’s appropriate to the emergency warning to be broadcast—for instance, green for a test, yellow for a watch and red for a warning, said Robertson.

“They [NVerzion] have gone beyond the basic ‘throw a crawl up there’ by understanding the essence of the alert and representing it on screen for viewers in a colorful way,” he added.

The CloudNine server with the EAS/CAP messaging integration is especially well-suited for broadcast operations on tight budgets, such as digital subchannels, Murphy added.

More information is available on the NVerzion website and the DAS website.

To manage its extensive responsibilities, WTIU said it needed a workflow system that streamlined operations and simplified tasks. The station also needed a system compatible with its current infrastructure.

“Recently, our automation system reached its end of life, and we needed a new platform that supports legacy third-party equipment with minimal complexity,” said George Hopstetter, director of operations and engineering at WTIU-TV. The station’s Grass Valley K2 Central video server, Utah Scientific UTAH-400 Series router, Sony IMX and HDCAM video recorders, ChyronHego Channel Box and Myers ProTrack traffic system all co-exist on the CLASS platform.

SALT LAKE CITY—Peoria TV has made the transition to a file-based, HD workflow with the help from NVerzion and its automation and video server systems. NVerzion’s Component Level Automation System Solutions platform and CloudNine cloud-based video server was installed by Peoria TV, a government access channel run by the City of Peoria, Ariz. The two systems are able to streamline tasks for the station, such as recording, HD upconversion, scheduling, playback, and data transfers.

In preparation of migrating to an all-HD workflow, Peoria TV copied its SD files to the CloudNine server, upconverting the files to 1080i. With the video server, the station can also simultaneously record and play out new audio and video content, as well as legacy content, without worrying about file format compatibilities.

The CLASS system is built on an open architecture that allows Peoria TV to control third-party equipment. The automation system helps guarantee the station’s on-air presentation by eliminating any single point of failure with the broadcaster’s file-based workflow. CLASS’ scalability allows it to add more features in the future.

NVerzion is a provider of digital broadcast automation tools that streamline workflows from acquisition to distribution and playout of content.

Among the additional components are the NControl on-air playlists, NGest professional dubbing and recording software, NPoint video presentation software for segmenting and trimming, NBase SQL media database manager, NTime time-driven event scheduling, NConvert manual and automated traffic interface, NCompass dynamic FTP manager, and EMC-Router Ethernet machine control.

The CLASS system aids in the acquisition, prep, and playout operations of KVIQ, as well as enables the broadcaster to control third-party equipment. CLASS also eliminates any single point of failure within the broadcasters’ file-based workflow. KVIQ has the ability to add more features and support additional channels or subchannels to CLASS.

SALT LAKE CITY – KSMQ-TV, the PBS station in Austin, Minn., has recently acquired a NVerzion Component Level Automation System Solutions to help its transition from SD to HD. With CLASS, KSMQ is able to speed up its operations and improve on-air presentation.

KSMQ’s CLASS system includes a variety of hardware and software applications, including NControl on-air playlists; NGest professional dubbing and recording software; NPoint video preparation software; NGenius intelligent storage browser, which is able to manage data via an on-site 40TB Microsoft Windows NAS system; and more.

CLASS also allows KSMQ to control third-party equipment and interfaces with KSMQ’s existing nearline storage system as a Windows shared environment. It also eliminates any single point of failure within the station’s file-based workflow for the integrity of on-air presentation. The station is now able to perform upgrades as the need arises and support additional channels and subchannels.

NVerzion is a digital broadcast automation tool provider based in Salt Lake City.
