STOCKHOLM, Sweden—Net Insight has announced Nimbra 520, a high-density media processing node designed to simplify live contribution and distribution across both managed and unmanaged networks. The company will demo the new node at the 2026 NAB Show in Las Vegas, April 18-22.

Built as part of Net Insight’s Nimbra Live execution layer, the company says Nimbra 520 brings consistent, deterministic performance into hybrid live media environments where operational simplicity, cost control, and confidence under pressure matter more than individual device features.

Nimbra 520 extends Net Insight’s Live Intelligence approach into live media execution. Rather than optimizing isolated functions, it delivers measurable performance across real-world networks, helping operators stay in control during peak events, failures, congestion, and rapid change.

With support for multichannel HEVC and AVC, Nimbra 520 enables up to 50% bandwidth savings compared to legacy workflows, allowing customers to scale contribution and distribution capacity without expanding network infrastructure.

Nimbra 520 is designed to change the economics of live media operations. Combined with Nimbra Edge, it enables a simple and flexible per-stream cost model, centralized orchestration, and automated lifecycle management. This reduces operational overhead, avoids over-provisioning, and lowers the cost and minimizes the impact of failures.

The new media processing node supports unmanaged internet contribution, hybrid cloud workflows, and fully managed IP networks. When deployed in managed environments, it integrates seamlessly into Net Insight’s platform-based operations. In unmanaged environments, it delivers the same predictable behavior through Edge-orchestrated workflows. This flexibility makes Nimbra 520 well suited for broadcasters, service providers, regional sports networks, and cloud-connected production.

“Live media operations must scale without driving complexity or cost,” says Andreas Eriksson, CEO of Net Insight. “With Nimbra 520, we extend our Live Intelligence architecture into a simpler, more flexible execution layer, giving customers predictable performance and lower cost per stream.”

Nimbra 520 features multichannel HEVC and AVC processing with professional broadcast quality, including UHD workflows, 10-bit video, and low-latency operation. Its high-density architecture enables significant bandwidth and infrastructure savings while maintaining predictable performance across managed and unmanaged IP networks.

Net Insight will be in Booth W1653 in the West Hall of the LVCC.

STOCKHOLM—At the 2026 NAB Show, Net Insight will be showcasing Nimbra Live Intelligence, which is designed to set a new standard for improved live operations.

Built as one platform with three distinct layers, Nimbra Live Intelligence is deployed across production, distribution and protection workflows. Delivered through Nimbra Live Performance, it enables live media environments to operate as predictable systems without requiring a proprietary stack or rip-and-replace transformation.

“For years, the industry has tried to solve live media challenges by optimizing individual components,” says Andreas Eriksson, CEO of Net Insight. “But live media doesn’t fail because one device breaks. It fails when systems lose predictable behavior under pressure. With Nimbra Live Intelligence, we address live media as a system-level challenge, not a product problem, enabling visible and controlled operations across networks, clouds, and organizations — even under extreme conditions and delivering operational confidence at scale.”

As part of the product announcement, Net Insight explained that live media has become the most demanding workload in the world’s networks. Audiences expect perfection, rights are increasingly valuable, and failures are instantly visible. At the same time, live workflows now span venues, studios, public internet, cloud platforms, service providers and partners — operating across shared responsibility models.

For broadcasters, content owners and service providers, the challenge is no longer codecs, bandwidth or cloud adoption. The real challenge is operating live media with confidence as scale, complexity and operational pressure continue to grow.

To address those challenges, Nimbra Live Intelligence approaches live media as a system-level challenge rather than a product problem. It enables live media environments across networks, clouds and organizations to operate predictably, visibly and controllably even under extreme conditions. This represents a shift from selling individual technologies to delivering operational confidence at scale.

In live sports and other mission-critical workflows, peak performance is not enough. What matters is predictable behavior during congestion, failures, peak events and rapid change. Nimbra Live Intelligence governs live media behavior end-to-end across managed networks, public internet and cloud environments protecting SLAs, revenue and brand trust when the stakes are highest.

“What matters to us is knowing how the entire live service will behave, not just whether individual devices are running,” says Andreas Langell, CEO of Mobilelinks, which is using the platform. “With Nimbra Live Intelligence built on an Open Media Platform approach, we gain real-time visibility and control across networks, cloud, and partners.”

Across contribution, remote production, distribution, studio interconnect and protection, Nimbra Live Intelligence treats live media as one predictable system — changing the operational economics of live media. Predictable systems fail less often, recover faster, require less over-provisioning, scale without redesign and reduce manual operations and staffing pressure. As scale and complexity increase, the outcome is a lower total cost of ownership over time.

Designed for today’s live media ecosystem, Nimbra Live Intelligence enables secure, vendor-agnostic collaboration across multi-network and multi-organization environments — without sacrificing predictability or operational confidence.

Net Insight will showcase Nimbra Live Intelligence and the Open Media Platform for Live at NAB Show 2026.
STOCKHOLM, Sweden—YouTube Live has added the Net Insight Nimbra Edge and Nimbra 400 series to its list of verified encoders.

Inclusion on the list confirms that YouTube has evaluated the Net Insight encoding solutions for live encoder compatibility and operational performance, giving broadcasters and content owners an additional layer of confidence when scaling live distribution to YouTube.

“Broadcasters want the freedom to distribute to every relevant platform without adding fragility to their live operations,” said Net Insight CEO Andreas Eriksson. “Being listed as a YouTube Live verified encoder is a practical proof point, we’ve collaborated closely on the required testing, demonstrating that our solutions are built to run stable, observable live delivery workflows at scale.”

YouTube publishes a list of verified software and hardware encoders to help organizations select solutions that meet its live ingest expectations. Nimbra Edge is listed under software encoders, and Nimbra 400 is listed under hardware encoders.

Broadcasters can stream to YouTube using non-verified encoders. However, verification indicates the encoder has passed detailed testing designed to reduce risk in live operations, including ingest compatibility, sustained stability and robust behavior during fault conditions. For YouTube workflows where SRT ingest is enabled, verification also supports more predictable reliable delivery behavior over SRT.

Audience and monetization strategies increasingly require publishers to diversify outputs across platforms while maintaining operational control. In practice, many teams start with YouTube for pop-up events, experimentation and incremental feeds—then expand into broader, always-on distribution and “YouTube first” approaches as usage grows.

With Nimbra Edge and Nimbra 400 now verified, organizations can adopt YouTube as an endpoint with greater confidence, while keeping workflows consistent across managed IP, internet and cloud environments.

"YouTube's verification program is designed to give content owners confidence that the technology they choose will perform consistently when delivering live streams to YouTube,” said Callum Hewett, Live Solutions consultant at YouTube. “It’s been great working closely with the Net Insight team; their Nimbra Edge and Nimbra 400 have successfully completed our rigorous testing for SRT and RTMP ingest, demonstrating stable and reliable ingestion.”

More information is available on the company’s website.

TV Tech: What do you anticipate will be the most significant technology trends at the 2025 NAB Show?

David Edwards: We are seeing broadcasters and streaming platform operators wanting to enhance their live events programming as a big driver to increase viewers and revenues. The record viewing figures for the Super Bowl of 127.7 million U.S. viewers across the board are a prime example of that.

Broadcasters, sports leagues and streaming platforms are looking to provide an enhanced experience to their customers—with more engaging, visceral and immersive viewing experiences on premium events and a broader range of content coming from televising previously untapped lower-tier events. These additional events and services are being made possible by increased use of technology that leverages the power of the unmanaged internet to carry more feeds and content at an affordable cost.

The near-ubiquitous availability and attractively low costs of internet connectivity makes solutions that enable and manage use of this connectivity a growing need and a must-have tool for the broadcast community. Net Insight is experiencing an increasing demand for our end-to-end solutions that enable broadcasters and production organizations to build and manage dynamic networks built around internet connectivity, leveraging ARQ techniques such as SRT and RIST—and allow live video to ingress and egress these networks.

We are seeing increasing demand from the broadcast industry wanting to achieve more with these dynamic networks, to have greater flexibility in providing tailored services through the ability to provide video processing and format conversion provision.

TVT: What will be your most important product news?

DE: The big news from us will be the culmination of a number of product developments that work together seamlessly. Net Insight now has a complete video network solution that leverages internet connectivity – From physical edge devices that ingress or egress raw video through to a network management solution that can configure, route and monitor content across internet connectivity.

The Net Insight Nimbra Edge solution now has the ability to transform the format of any video content—to transcode it, transrate it and add overlays. Operators will have the ability to deploy a complete end-to-end networking solution by closely coupling the video networking with video-centric nodes to ingress and egress video feeds and making big technical leaps forward with these devices.

Net Insight’s Nimbra 400 has been enhanced to provide channel-dense, highest quality HEVC 4:2:2 10-bit compression allowing operators to build out bandwidth efficient bi-directional video networks. When addressing smaller installations, or where affordability is critical, Net Insight is launching the smaller Nimbra 204 edge device. Still with the same high quality, low latency compression capability. These Broadcasters and network operators now have the ability to deploy the right solutions whatever the required scale.

TVT: How is your new product different from what’s available on the market?

DE: The Net Insight Nimbra Edge solution brings together top-flight networking, video processing and video-centric edge devices together in one closely coupled solution. Through all components being integrated together, a network can be built, monitored and dynamically controlled from ingress to egress with ease and confidence.

Our solution is unique by allowing hybrid deployments across Cloud and COTS processing — allowing operators to scale efficiently while optimizing costs and flex without complexity as needs evolve. By deploying processing capabilities at the network edge, Nimbra Edge enhances service reliability, even for users with marginal connections.

But perhaps the greatest strength of the solution is the choice and flexibility of the video nodes that can be deployed at the network edge. With the use of low-cost internet connectivity enabling the drive to provide richer and greater breadth of content, the demands for higher quality video are increasing. Net Insight’s Nimbra 204 and Nimbra 400 are designed to deliver highest quality video from any location.

TVT: What is it about the NAB Show that brings you back every year?

DE: NAB Show is an event that is unmatched in scale. The global media industry converges on Las Vegas to showcase and experience the advances in the industry.

It is a place to meet, to discuss ideas, to learn, and be surprised.

But what NAB Show consistently demonstrates is a pace of change—and willingness in the industry to respond to the challenges of a media world in constant flux.

Over the years that I have experienced NAB, moments of revolution have been rare but every year you find something new, something exciting, perhaps tucked away on a single booth. The next year the impact of that excitement has created a new evolution and rippled out across multiple booths. Change has taken root; a problem has been solved for the better and the world is different again. That is something you will find nowhere else.

What’s more, Super Bowl LVIII alone brought in a record of 123.7 million average viewers. This has also bled into streaming, with the NFL’s first streaming-exclusive playoff reaching a record-breaking 23 million viewers.

While the media landscape continues to develop fast, live sports keep linear viewership rates high. Sports fans worldwide consume live Tier-1, alongside an increasing volume of lower tier, niche sports, bringing media companies valuable, loyal viewership and monetization opportunities.

However, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to live sports video delivery. With hardware, cloud-based, and hybrid distribution models available, media companies must make sure the strategy they opt for aligns with the value of their content and the expected ROI for each destination. The model needs to fit the content and overall company business needs to fully take advantage of lucrative live sports opportunities.

Ensuring Highly Reliable Delivery
The dramatic rise in global demand for live sports consumption is significantly driving up the value of sports rights. The influx of tech and streaming players into the market has turned the sports rights arena into a competitive battlefield, continually pushing the value of these rights higher. According to Rethink Research, the global media rights for the top 16 sports leagues worldwide are projected to reach $68.8 billion by 2028 and an astounding $90.6 billion by 2033.

As media companies vie for a share of the fast-growing live sports market, the stakes are getting higher with the content becoming increasingly premium. However, the challenge extends beyond acquiring these rights. Media companies must also ensure reliable and high-quality delivery of live feeds to provide the best viewing experiences and maximize monetization. Premium content demands robust delivery; fans will not tolerate missing crucial moments in sports history due to video quality issues, delays, or buffering.

This is where hardware-based video contribution and primary distribution workflows excel. Innovative hardware solutions offer ultra-reliable, broadcast-grade long-distance media networking across any infrastructure. They support high-density video compression formats, from lossless JPEG XS to H.264, enabling media companies to manage various events and monetize them using a single, reconfigurable platform.

The key to meeting the business needs of media companies lies in flexibility and scalability. Modern hardware solutions are designed to adapt to multiple scenarios, accommodating the fast-paced changes and variable returns characteristic of the media landscape. These solutions allow companies to set up new services, adjust bandwidth on demand, and expand their network with new locations and services as needed. Investing in a versatile hardware distribution model ensures that media companies can reliably deliver high-value content, maintaining viewer satisfaction and capitalizing on monetization opportunities.

Overall we can see how considering business needs, such as, in this case, reliable streaming of high-value live sports content, shows one distribution model to be more advantageous than others.

Cloud-Based Models: Unbeatable Scalability
Cloud and IP workflows have transformed consumer video delivery, allowing media organizations to reach vast audiences through existing connectivity. By leveraging the cloud, media companies can scale up or down per live event swiftly and seamlessly, consuming necessary services through a flexible commercial model. This approach eliminates the need for upfront tech infrastructure investment, thereby reducing risk and enabling experimentation with new markets, content, and destinations at lower initial costs.

While cloud and internet primary delivery models are gaining traction, they are primarily used as backup links or for second-screen content in Tier 1 live sports events. However, for lower-tier events, these workflows are becoming the preferred choice. A cloud-based distribution model aligns perfectly with the business needs of media companies distributing lower-tier live sports video content, providing the flexibility, scalability, and cost-efficiency required by those delivery circumstances.

Hybrid Models: ‘Best of Both Worlds’?
Despite the immense popularity of premium live sports, not all global markets guarantee revenue growth, making new ventures risky. Entering unfamiliar markets requires a cautious approach regarding the investment needed to distribute video content to new audiences. Media companies looking to explore new territories while maintaining cost-effective video distribution benefit from a hybrid approach. This method combines existing infrastructure investments with the flexibility, scalability, and cost-efficiency of internet primary distribution, enabling them to expand their live content and maximize their investment value.

For media companies acquiring rights to tier 2 and 3 sports, a hybrid model can enhance the primary feed with additional pre/post-game content and highlights for social media and other platforms. This strategy allows them to engage with dedicated fan bases, drive monetization, and boost cross-platform engagement without significant infrastructure investments.

The dynamic nature of live sports demands that media organizations act swiftly and intelligently. Securing valuable sports rights is only the beginning. The real challenge lies in maximizing ROI while minimizing risk. Media companies must have a strategic live sports distribution plan tailored to the unique requirements and potential risks of each market.

By choosing the most appropriate approach—whether hardware, cloud, or hybrid—on a case-by-case basis, media businesses can protect their content investments and future-proof their operations. In an ever-evolving media landscape, adaptability and strategic planning are essential for staying ahead of the competition.

Delivering live video content quickly, reliably, and at scale is a mission-critical capability for the media industry. Media companies need to deliver content from destination A to multiple destinations (often in the millions) to ensure they reach the right audiences wherever they might be.

While last-mile consumer delivery has been leveraging IP for some time, so far, industry players have been a lot more willing to opt for cloud and IP-driven video transport technologies for their Tier 2 or 3 content contribution and primary distribution, choosing more ‘traditional’ transport workflows for their high-value Tier 1 content.

However, innovation in software-defined transport networks that are media-centric in nature renders them fit for purpose for the stringent quality, synchronization, and reliability requirements of the media industry. When it comes to valuable live content, media companies shouldn’t continue missing a trick — here is why!

Building Media-Centric Foundations in Video Delivery
In the media industry, we often hear that the internet wasn’t built for primary delivery of media content. Pretty much any cloud provider can move packets from point A to point B or even to C and D over an IP network.

However, when these workflows are live video streams any packet loss will lead to failures. This is because a generic IP network lacks the critical foundations, by design, that are required for critical live media transport to platform partners, especially when transporting high-value media content.

For broadcasters and media services providers, the answer to this challenge isn’t shying away from cloud and IP innovation. The next-generation software-defined networks that are built specifically for media transport combine the benefits of hardware-defined networks and the cloud by leveraging media-centric foundations:

Observability
Sending a video signal to a destination over a generic IP network is like taking a stab in the dark. By choosing the correct transport protocol chances are that your signal will reach the destination, but you’ll have no visibility of how it got there and what its quality is like at the other end. You’ll be unaware of any problems the signal might have encountered at any point in its journey. In other words, you’ll be completely blind and unable to take any preventative or restorative action.

The answer comes with a software-defined network that breaks down the network into smaller segments. In doing so, it delivers monitoring metrics that provide insight into the video signal delivery every step of the way. This visibility enables broadcasters and media service providers to have control over their media delivery and ensure it is efficient, high-quality, and seamless.

Protection
Using a generic IP network to deliver video signals also runs into the problem of protecting these signals. Video delivery requires tight uptime and 24/7 robust and redundant services that are simply not available by generic IP networks.

A media-centric approach to enhancing the protection of video delivery requires a smart combination of ‘traditional’ broadcasting and cloud engineering that can apply some of the traditional broadcasting engineering methods to next-gen IP networks. This is why traditional broadcasting engineers are extremely valuable in this new era of cloud-powered media. With the right approach and innovation, IP networks that are tailored to the needs of video transport can overcome reliability challenges.

This is where flexibility is key. The more protected the IP networks are, the more expensive they get. With the right media-centric network, media companies can pick and choose which of their content (typically the most valuable) will be the most protected on an input/output basis. In this way, they can control when, which, and how they choose to protect the media they deliver without having to make huge investments upfront.

Scalability
Another critical foundation of a media-centric delivery network is the capability to scale up or down content distribution quickly, easily, and efficiently, depending on demand. This is what we call a "jellyfish" network that is based on an agile and nimble architectural approach that enables broadcasters to scale their streams as and when they need it.

Synchronization
Ensuring accurate timing information across the IP networks and synchronizing contributed with distributed video signals removes the challenge of having different partners receiving feeds with millisecond delays depending on their region. Synchronization is also a critical capability for the betting industry as any millisecond delay can have a big impact on the real-time betting experience and overall fan engagement and cause the broadcaster financial and reputational damage.

A Media-First Approach
There’s no doubt that IP and the cloud have redefined the media industry, sparking previously unthinkable innovation and use cases. However, not all IP networks are born equal and, in this case, fit for purpose.

Having the right media-centric IP media delivery network is a competitive advantage. It empowers you to drive new levels of efficiency, scalability, and flexibility while protecting your most valuable video content. It also grants you the control you need to optimize quality and prevent any issues with signal delivery.

For the media industry, this isn’t simply the era of the cloud and IP — it’s the era of the media-centric cloud and IP, and smart broadcasters and media services providers will harness their power today.

Cloud and IP technology are revolutionizing industries unlocking unprecedented levels of agility and innovation. Once locked into ‘traditional’ on-premise and capital-heavy working methods, the media industry is enjoying newly-found flexibility and scalability.

However, like with most things, the media industry has no one-size-fits-all approach. Every media organization defines and follows its path to transformation and innovation. In the case of cloud and IP transformation, this often means deploying innovative workflows that complement existing infrastructure. Given that innovation can work alongside instead of against existing investments, the current paradigm for broadcasting is hybrid.

In this hybrid broadcasting world, media organizations can harness the best of both worlds in the way that makes the most sense for them. However, to be successful, delivering compelling live viewing experiences is critical while navigating the latency, synchronization, and security challenges in hybrid models.

Going Hybrid for Success
A hybrid broadcasting environment enables media companies to benefit from their existing CAPEX investments for their core traffic needs, including 24/7 contribution and distribution for linear TV. But what happens when additional networking capacity for occasional use is required, like popular live events?

This is where the cloud demonstrates its potential to deliver the additional capacity that brings the flexibility and scalability media organizations require to spin network resources up or down depending on actual needs rather than investing in infrastructure that is only used occasionally.

Cloud workflows also allow broadcasters to replace satellite-driven content contribution and distribution. Sourcing additional capacity from the cloud will enable media companies to overcome the limited C Band satellite bandwidth available to the media industry.

What’s best is that industry players can also benefit from a flexible and transparent cloud pricing structure, knowing exactly what and when they will be charged for. For the 24/7 services, it is nearly always worth investing in own data center resources while still leveraging the same agile virtualized workflows and cost-effective IP infrastructure.

For this traffic mix to succeed and work seamlessly, industry players need the right media platform to enable a hybrid architecture that supports all types of traffic mixes — including core and occasional use workflows, legacy SDI and new ST 2110 formats, as well as managed and unmanaged IP networks.

The media platform must be open, flexible, and standards-based to support all on-premise data centers and cloud providers. In addition, the platform needs to be compatible with the full range of protocols available in the market, including RTMP, SRT, RIST, and Zixi, and support protocol conversion as necessary.

Beyond the Latency and Time Synchronization Challenges
When it comes to live cloud production, latency, and time synchronization are critical parameters to deliver high-quality video delivery and seamless viewing experiences. To put this in context, remote production has the most stringent latency requirements, with the maximum latency being typically 100-150 milliseconds. For other live production workflows, the contribution latency needs to be below 1 second end-to-end, including encoding and decoding.

The media traffic is sensitive to jitter and requires the content to be sent and received with the same clock (pace). In addition, synchronization is critical for high-tier live events (i.e., Tier 1 and 2) with multi-camera productions to ensure frame alignment and compensate for any network delays. The source and destination nodes should use the same clock to achieve this.

However, in IP environments, transferring time can be challenging. This is why it is important to ensure clocks are configured correctly on both sides to avoid frame misalignment and overall poor quality.

Meeting the Security, IP Domain Management, and Flow Control Challenges Head-on
When moving to the cloud, media traffic switches between local and public IP networks and different IP address domains. Therefore, it’s essential that media platforms can handle translations at edge points, such as when moving between the venue, cloud, and studio IP address domains.

All data, audio, and video will enter the domains over the same network links and ports. As a result, it’s important to ‘filter’ the IP media traffic and streams that can go in and out of each network domain, as even ‘secure’ IP media traffic can cause serious issues. If the content isn’t configured correctly, it can flood the network and cause packet loss, jitter, and delay.

So far, securing cloud workflows and IP media networks has relied on the combination of general-purpose, media-unaware firewalls and Network Address Translation (NAT) capabilities to a certain degree. However, these solutions are falling short as they don’t deliver the capabilities and performance required to handle the number of streams and data in large IP media networks.

An IP Media Trust Boundary supporting ST 2022 and ST 2110 workflows brings unparalleled security, speed, low latency, and efficiency. The IP Media Trust Boundary automates traffic filtering of incoming and outgoing IP addresses and ports per stream and core application.

Through user-selectable metrics, media companies can control which data and streams to be allowed or blocked. This includes transferring content in mixed IP environments and between trusted and untrusted IP domains. The IP Media Trust Boundary not only brings unprecedented levels of security but also delivers flexibility and scalability.

The NAT functionality allows for the removal and reapplication of the entire IP layer, creating a tamper-proof seal while enabling the complete reuse of IP addresses and dramatically simplifying the move between multicast and unicast networks and IP media devices.

Getting Future-Proofed in the Hybrid Era
The cloud opens the door to flexibility and innovation, but media companies must transition to these innovative workflows at their own pace to ensure they make the most of it.

Hybrid workflows will continue to be the dominating modus operandi in the media and broadcasting industries for the foreseeable future. With the right technology partner, media organizations can leverage innovation to benefit from new and existing workflows.

Overcoming the challenges of latency, time synchronization, and media-related flow control and security is key to success in this hybrid broadcasting environment. This is where an open and flexible cloud media platform can drive a competitive advantage delivering the critical capabilities media companies need to get ahead of the curve while staying true to their business and operational needs.

Speed and flexibility are more important than ever when it comes to live media production. The media industry is transforming fast with 5G, AR and VR technologies—not to mention the metaverse—changing how live events are produced and consumed. New, immersive, and personalized viewing experiences are not nice ‘add-ons’ but standard requirements that consumers expect on their connected TVs or at the edge of their fingertips.

Second screens are becoming as important as primary broadcasts to capture eyeballs and enable content monetization. This means more content needs to be captured from live events and delivered in formats that boost audience engagement. In other words, live content needs to be produced from everywhere and delivered anywhere to ensure it brings the most value to media organizations.

Over the past two years, media companies have been turning to cloud workflows to level up their live production and benefit from flexibility, on-demand scalability, production streamlining, and cost efficiencies. The cloud revolution is reshaping the media industry. To harness its benefits, media companies need to look at their media infrastructure holistically and ensure they move to the cloud confidently and on their terms while reaping the benefits of interoperability. Here’s what they need to consider.

Demystifying cloud transition
Cloud offers an appealing proposition for managing, transporting, and delivering content. However, radically shifting workflows and production models requires strategizing and preparation to ensure all the critical parameters are accounted for:

Harnessing cost-efficiency now and in the future
The cost of cloud transformation is the most highly-debated parameter. Like with any investment, transitioning to the cloud has a financial impact but there are ways for media organizations to work around this. To minimize costs and benefit from the economics of the cloud, media organizations need the right cloud-based delivery solution that is open and compatible with any cloud provider and to hybrid models.

Hybrid cloud models leveraging own servers and data centers for linear and 24/7 services are still the most cost-effective, while open cloud is unprecedented for occasional use, batch works and provide a seamless end-to-end workflow from ingest to delivery, An open and interoperable cloud solution enables media companies to continue to leverage their existing infrastructure lowering CAPEX and creating cost efficiencies that last in the medium and long-term.

Bringing security to the forefront
When shifting to the cloud, securing content when getting into and out of the cloud and maintaining control inside the cloud is fundamental. Media trust boundaries are critical for securing different IP domains. Cloud security requires reliable tracking and monitoring workflow capabilities that deliver visibility and risk management. One new important part of improving security and flexibility in any IP media workflows is the IP media trust boundary being standardized within SMPTE.

Equipping the organization with the right talent
Ensuring that a media organization has the right skillset to manage and sustain cloud transformation is a critical success factor. Often, an organization’s talent pool knows is experienced in on-prem equipment management but moving to Dockers, K8s, certificates, REST API, auto-scaling, real-time dashboards, and IP configuration of virtual private networks in data centers is new and unchartered territory.

Attracting cloud-literate talent and/or training cloud professionals, same on the media-specific requirements and strict SLAs for time-critical applications take time and investment. Media organizations need to have the right cloud talent strategy to ensure they are ready for their cloud transformation journey.

Quality, availability, and scalability
Media companies moving to the cloud expect 24/7 availability and redundancy. They require resilient, high-quality workflows for critical content that can be scaled as and when required. The right cloud production solution should enable broadcasting industry players to deploy bespoke workflows that can be tailored for individual live events.

It also enables them to transition from CAPEX to OPEX by scaling capacity up and down depending on demand and only paying for the resources they need when they need them. This flexibility is increasingly valuable when it comes to, for example, major events where there is a short peak of usage. A transparent, pay-as-you-go pricing structure enables media companies to reduce costs by only adding technology as needed, managing investments over time.

Harnessing the interoperability benefits
True interoperability is a critical requirement for cloud native software running on virtualized machines across standardized networks. Cloud technology enables media companies to design workflows integrating best of breed tools and services. By employing a virtualized IP infrastructure, they can detach the physical equipment from the production workflow and largely automate the process. This allows the seamless equipment sharing between both live and file-based production.

This level of openness can be achieved with cloud agnostic tools that enable media companies to break free from vendor lock-in. Cloud solution components should be based on core standards like ST 2110 and be able to work with a range of standard professional media over IP protocols from SRT to RIST. To deliver on the interoperability promise, they should be able to integrate seamlessly with third party vendor technologies provided these tools are also orchestrated for IP.

Leading the cloud revolution
Cloud workflows drive innovation and transformation in the media industry. New cloud-powered live production models like remote and distributed production are shaking up the dynamics of the media landscape, replacing traditional on-site, hardware-intensive workflows. Likewise, satellite contribution and primary distribution is increasingly being moved to IP and cloud workflows. The benefits of these new workflows are multi-faceted.

Cloud technology is a paradigm shift in the media industry that can bring industry players unparalleled benefits. The right cloud infrastructure enables media organizations to transition to the cloud seamlessly and on their terms. They can increase efficiencies and minimize costs by leveraging open and interoperable solutions that allow them to leverage existing investments. Media companies that opt for open and interoperable cloud solutions that enable them to maximize their existing investments are primed for success.

MONT-SAINT-GUILBERT, France—Net Insight has announced a partnership with intoPIX, the leading provider of innovative compression technology, to develop cutting-edge JPEG XS compliant solutions.

Currently, intoPIX TICO-XS is fully compliant with the new JPEG XS standard and delivers pristine image quality and imperceptible latency within a highly portable software application framework. Net Insight offers JPEG XS standard compliant applications within its Cloud and IP solution portfolio, the companies said.

They also said that Nimbra JPEG XS applications are available now and are rolling out to support the delivery of some of the world’s biggest live sporting events. Net Insight’s Cloud and IP media platform combines the power of zero-compromise video compression with its industry-leading, open-standard media delivery technology.

The JPEG XS content production codec is a so-called lightweight image coding system that processes video at the microsecond level with line-based latency. Based on real-world testing and compression grades in the range of 4:1 to 12:1, Net Insight’s JPEG XS applications can deliver lossless quality video while reducing typical network resource consumption by 90%, it said. As JPEG XS is designed to scale, it fully supports the ability to natively process UHD-4K and UHD-8K content. JPEG XS may be used wherever uncompressed video is currently used, including live and distributed production, AV over IP, Virtual and Augmented Realities (VR, AR) and eSports.

The media industry has embraced remote working and the enabling technologies. By leveraging JPEG XS, users can further reduce our resource utilization and the number of processing steps, the companies said.

Software-based processing enables content editing and production workflows to eliminate the need to jump back and forth between different uncompressed interface standards and different codec formats. This breakthrough in video workflow processing accelerates the transition to high-quality distributed content creation and eliminates the need to accept heavily compressed and artefact filled workflows as the compromise for moving to distributed production, the companies said.

By integrating JPEG XS into its Cloud and IP media platform, Net Insight adds yet another processing option for content producers and service providers to harness. The same application acceleration platform offers virtualized processing across IP, SDI, and mixed format environments. Customers can reuse the same acceleration hardware to perform both media and network processing. The application list includes the IP Media Trust Boundary, lossless Ethernet switching, IP WAN aggregation, MPEG-4, JPEG 2000, and JPEG XS. All of these processing apps, whether it is for ST2110, SDI or IP/Ethernet data are available with lossless 1, 10, 25 and 100 GE network interfaces.

Reusing the same hardware and loading new software applications when needed allows Net Insight customers to plan further ahead and adapt to the media industry’s shift to IP, secure IT and Cloud services.

“We are proud to be partnering with intoPIX, pioneer of class-leading video compression technologies, to create solutions that deliver meaningful environmental and financial savings for the media and broadcast industry,” said Christer Bohm, vice president of product management at Net Insight. “The JPEG XS standard strengthens the innovation possible within content production, thereby assisting to create improved live experiences for viewers all over the world. Net Insight’s JPEG XS applications bring game-changing cost reductions to our customers. In addition to bringing JPEG XS to our latest Cloud and IP solutions, we have also invested to bring JPEG XS to existing Nimbra media networks.”

“Net Insight’s leadership in Cloud, IP and standards-based technology represents the kind of role model partnership needed to realize the full potential of JPEG XS,” said Jean-Baptiste Lorent, marketing and sales director at intoPIX. “We believe that content producers, media companies and service providers will greatly appreciate the engineering excellence and innovative nature of Net Insight’s adoption of the JPEG XS technology. We are immensely proud to partner on new solutions that can reduce resource consumption and environmental impact.”

LONDON—As demands for 4K sports broadcasts increases, Tata Communications has announced that it has developed a 100G media backbone that is designed to assist with growing bandwidth demands.

This new infrastructure from Tata Communications was designed in collaboration with Net Insight to enable broadcasters, OTT companies and eSports businesses to deliver more immersive viewing and gaming experiences. Specifically, the backbone was built using Net Insight’s Nimbra 1060 WAN transport platform, which enables the delivery of IP-based media services across global media networks. Nimbra 1060 will underpin Tata Communication’s global end-to-end managed Video Connect Network.

For major sports events, this infrastructure can support up to 50 raw video feeds and the delivery of unilateral, localized feeds by different rightsholders for their regions, per Tata Communications. In addition, working with other Tata Communications workflows will help with full remote production of these events. The 100G capacity lowers the barriers for global sports organizations to move from satellite-based content distribution to fiber across entire continents, the company said.

For eSports, the 100G backbone helps overcome potential bandwidth issues needed for components like multiple cameras, cutaways, real-time reactions, commentary and editing.

“Viewers, sports fans and gamers increasingly expect immersive, high-quality content—delivered live from the other side of the world or on demand—on a range of different media platforms,” said Dhaval Ponda, associate vice president, media and entertainment, Tata Communications. “This 100G backbone and our managed video services will help our customers innovate with agility and become more competitive.”

STOCKHOLM—The media industry is undergoing a period of unprecedented change and viewers continue to flock to the cash-rich facilitators of the ‘new age of content,’ be it Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, Google or Apple (FANGA). In the past, this mostly applied to on-demand content, but it is now becoming increasingly crucial for high quality live events. Consumers want it all with high quality picture: UHD, HDR, HFR, multiscreen, VR, 360… and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

While end-users have a tendency to focus on what FANGA and the major traditional broadcasters are bringing to the table, what they’re often unaware of is the strain their new demands put on content production and distribution. Demands met with changing workflows and new technologies such as cloud-based production, remote production, distributed production and file-based workflows.

All of these workflow changes are enabled by the technology shift to IP in production, and more specifically to the adoption of 2110 standards for IP based production.

One company that is determined to help address these end-user demands, new production workflows and technology shifts is Net Insight. With all this in mind, they are releasing a next generation terabit platform, Nimbra 1060, to provide flexibility and agility with assured service quality for terabit IP needs. This new product is unique in that it brings IP-based media services across national and global media networks easily, without the complex traffic engineering typically associated with high-quality media transport. It reportedly also provides the industry’s highest capacity density.

Net Insight’s Nimbra 1060 provides “a hassle free solution” to increasing workflow demands to keep up with demand of live content.

“We are very largely driven by the end user demands for more interesting and higher quality content, especially from live events. Content which also has a very high intrinsic value for both content owners and broadcasters,” said Alexander Sandström, strategic product manager at Net Insight.

End-users are now watching on various different sized screens and have much higher demands with regards to resolution, picture quality, pixels, which inevitably causes bandwidth issues.

“Production has changed and will continue to do so to handle this large number of different viewing methods and expectations, something that of course affects our position in the marketplace," said Sandström.

Capacity demands are increasing at an alarming rate. Net Insight expects the core capacity of wide area media networks to triple in the next three years, while the capacity demand on remote production sites could increase tenfold in the same period.

Clearly, these new demands mean future media networks will need to provide more capacity on each site, on each link and throughout the entire wide area network core.

One challenge with the shift to IP is retaining the high quality that live production has delivered in the past. What complicates matters more is that networks will also have to be agile enough to adapt to changing workflows and traffic patterns. All this must be achieved while supporting the shift to IP, and more specifically, to the 2110 standards.

Net Insight's Nimbra 1060 is designed to retain all the characteristics from its existing Nimbra MSRs in an all-IP world. Service providers and network operators get a carrier grade platform, with assured service quality and service agility guaranteed at any level of network utilization. With this combination of assurance and agility, users are able to use all available network capacity without sacrificing quality.

“What we see is that production is expanding out from single OB vans and locations and things like remote production is becoming much more prevalent,” Sandström continued.

“There’s also an increasing pressure on companies to use their resources more efficiently. We see the launch of our next generation media transport solution as a large step in aiding these changes, where resources may be distributed over large distances.”

“With remote and distributed workflows the network is becoming the most crucial common production resource, and that’s what we want to provide a simple and future proof solution for," concluded Sandström.

This story first appeared on TVT's sister publication TVB Europe.

Including products like Media Networks, Connector Marketplace and Sye True Live OTT, Net Insight is looking to address how media content is produced, contributed and delivered.

One of the Media Network systems set to be on display is Net Insight Media Fabric, which is designed to deploy services, automate workflows and transport a mix of services and formats. Its applications include Remote Production 2.0, an end-to-end remote production system that features fully distributed production workflows over Wide Area Networks. Additional features include on-demand scheduling of production resources and software-defined workflows and video, transport and audio tools.

There is also the Nimbra platform, which has been integrated with Calrec’s RP1 remote production unit to support for full audio remote production for connectivity, transport and control of audio mixes from any location. In addition, the Nimbra VA has Net Insight’s internet contribution for satellite backup solution for live broadcast quality video transport over the internet.

Net Insight’s Sye True Live OTT platform allows live content to be streamed with low latency and frame-accurate synchronization across devices. The platform is designed to be either faster than normal broadcasts or add individual delay to harmonize the OTT stream with a local TV service provider. The system also features a server-side ad-insertion solution.

Also set to be shown is the Connector Marketplace cloud-based media marketplace for exchanging services, connectivity, both satellite and terrestrial, inventory and resources in real time through a pay-per-use model.

Net Insight will be located at booth 1.B40 during the show, which runs from Sept. 15-19 in Amsterdam.

A key aspect of the partnership will integrated the Calrec RP1 Remote Production Unit with Net Insight’s Nimbra platform for quality-assured transport and precise control of audio mixes from any location.

“Most of the focus on remote production in the industry to date has been on the video side but it is audio that is much more complicated to manage,” said Fredrik Tumegård, CEO of Net Insight. “Setting up different interfaces on-site is time consuming, takes greater resource and means there are many more points in the chain where faults can occur. The integration of Net Insight’s Nimbra portfolio with Calrec’s RP1 takes away all this pain. This is another key step to unlocking the full potential of remote production.”

The two companies have worked together to optimize Calrec’s Hydra2 audio and control protocols with the Nimbra platform and enable perfect connectivity on-site with no synchronization issues. RP1 provides a variety of interface formats, including SDI and AES67, which can be transported alongside control data across the Nimbra platform.

“Remote broadcasting using RP1 and Net Insight Nimbra means fewer resources are needed on site, and controlling audio from a remote console saves money on setup time, crew, logistics and equipment,” said Dave Letson, vice president of sales for Calrec.” Production can be up and running quickly thanks to the plug and play unison of just two boxes and operation does not require high-level technical expertise, and provides assured no-latency audio processing from any venue to any production base.”

The integration provides immediate workflow efficiency advantages for Net Insight customers in the field and will be offered as a turnkey solution for new customers.

The versatility of the combined solution means productions can connect via analogue, AES, MADI, SDI, and the latest AoIP solutions from AES67, and SMPTE 2022 and transport remotely over IP. With all DSP processing for monitor mixes taken care of on-site, the transmission console at base can concentrate purely on the main program mix.

The workflow partnership will be a highlighted demonstration at IBC 2017.

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN and HOLLYWOOD, FLA.- Media Transport provider Net Insight announced the acquisition of VizuAll Inc., trading under the name of ScheduALL, for $14 million cash. Net Insight said the acquisition will strengthen its market position in media service and workflow orchestration.

“We will continue to serve our customers and partners and accelerate the deployment of advanced solutions providing automated, assured orchestration for on-demand network services,” said Ralph Quintero, chief operating officer and owner of ScheduALL.

Fredrik Tumegård, CEO of Net Insight, said, “The acquisition also leads to a stronger customer offering which enables us to take a broader and more strategic role towards service providers and media companies. We also want to welcome our new colleagues and we are looking forward to grow together and create further success.”

Net Insight is acquiring 100 percent of the shares in ScheduALL, for $14 million on a cash and debt-free basis. The acquisition price will be paid in cash at closing and will be adjusted for the actual level of debt, working capital and cash. The payment will be funded by using available cash.

Transactional costs of an estimated SEK5 million will affect Net Insight’s third and fourth quarter results of 2015. The transaction is expected to close on Oct. 1, from which date ScheduALL will be fully consolidated. The transaction is expected to have a positive impact on earnings per share from Jan. 1, 2016.

ScheduALL, founded in 1989, is a provider of enterprise resources management software for media, broadcast and transmission businesses. Fiscal 2014 revenues totaled $10.6 million with a net profit of $0.7 million. Approximately 60 percent of revenues are recurring. In 2014, about half of revenues were derived from North American customers. ScheduALL has around 75 employees.

The companies have had a strategic partnership for several years. Together they have implemented a software-defined networking platform for service providers allowing them to offer an automated service provisioning over global wide area networks. By this solution service providers reduce operating cost and media companies gain from more flexible and efficient workflows. Net Insight can now broaden the solution with new services and applications.
