WASHINGTON—The NAB Education Foundation will once again host a Broadcast Leadership Training program in 2020, and is now accepting applications from senior-level broadcasters. The training program is designed to prepare its participants to advance into ownership or executive positions.

Now in its 20th year, BLT is a 10-month program that guides participants through the process of assessing, purchasing, owning and operating radio and television properties. Senior-level broadcast executives, FCC staff, communications attorneys, investors and members of the banking community serve as some of the teachers, along with academic faculty from various universities.

BLT sessions are held one weekend a month for the 10-month program at the NAB headquarters in Washington, D.C. In addition, participants have the opportunity to attend the NAB State Leadership Conference, the NAB Show and the NABEF Celebration of Service to America Awards.

General managers, experienced general sales managers, seasoned department heads and regional and corporate executives are encouraged to apply before the Aug. 30 deadline.

There are also fellowship opportunities for women and people of color. Diversity Fellowship applications are due by May 31.

WASHINGTON—In honor of Congressman John D. Dingell Jr., who passed away in early February, the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation has established the John D. Dingell Jr. Award for Excellence.

Rep. Dingell was elected to Congress in 1955, and during his 59-year career he served 14 terms as chairman or ranking member of the House Energy & Commerce Committee, where he helped shape legislation that impacted today’s system of free and local radio and television. His work helped give TV broadcasters a loan of spectrum to initiate digital and HD television; he blocked attempts to impose government-mandated free airtime for politicians; supported broadcast efforts to secure retransmission consent rights; and fought to ensure that low-power FM stations didn’t interfere with existing full-power FM stations. He also provided overview of the FCC and reviews of broadcast regulations.

When he retired in January 2015, Dingell was the longest-serving congressman in U.S. history.

“John Dingell was a patriot, a lifelong public servant and a strong believer in the importance of free and local broadcasting,” said NAB President and CEO Gordon Smith in the announcement. “America’s broadcasters owe a debt of gratitude to Chairman Dingell for his lifelong friendship and enduring impact he had on our industry. We are honored to establish The John D. Dingell Jr. Award for Excellence as a tribute to his legacy.”

The NABEF will recognize Dingell’s contributions to the broadcasting community at its Celebration of Service to America Awards gala on June 11. The first John D. Dingell Jr. Award for Excellence will be given out at the 2020 gala following the establishment of award criteria.

WASHINGTON--The National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation is accepting entries for this year’s round of Service to America Awards now through March 8.

Television and relevision winners will be chosen in categories, subdivided in broadcast ownership groups, large/major market, medium market and small market stations.

Honorees will be recognized for outstanding community service on June 11 at the Celebration of Service to America Awards gala at The Anthem in Washington. The event and awards program are sponsored and produced by NABEF with major support from the National Association of Broadcasters, Bonneville International and Hearst Television.

The NAB Education Foundation is accepting applications for the 2019 Technology Apprenticeship Program now through Jan. 31.

The program is open to graduating college/technical school seniors who want to work in the technical side of broadcasting. Examples of relevant career interests include: electrical engineering, information technology, telecommunications or radio and television transmission.

The six-month program kicks off in March. In addition to becoming Certified Broadcast Technologists through the Society of Broadcast Engineers, TAP participants will also:

• attend NAB Show in Las Vegas in April;
• complete a paid, two-month apprenticeship at a radio or TV station starting in June;
• and produce a live webcast from NAB headquarters in Washington in August.

WASHINGTON — TV and radio broadcasters have a new resource to help fund internships to grow the pool of young engineering talent for the broadcast industry.

Pilot, NAB’s technology innovation initiative, in partnership with the National Association of Broadcasters Educational Foundation, today announced the launch of a new program to provide grants to NAB members that establish paid engineering and media technology internships at their radio and TV stations.

“We believe these internships will help NAB member stations attract the best and brightest and expand awareness of the exciting work that a career in broadcast technology can provide,” said NAB CTO Sam Matheny. “We are thrilled to be working with NABEF on this program, as a key component of Pilot’s technology education efforts.”

Initial grants will be for part-time internships in the spring 2019 academic term and full-time internships in the summer of next year. The program is aimed at helping NAB members that do not offer engineering or media-technology internships at the moment.

The new initiative will also help selected stations identify and support interns as well as assist with their attending the 2019 NAB Show in Las Vegas.

The deadline for NAB members to apply for the grants is Aug. 15 for the spring 2019 internships. The deadline for the summer internship grants is Nov. 2.

“Through these grants, we expect to provide more opportunities for students to explore and learn about broadcast technology and engineering,” said NABEF President Marcellus Alexander. “The result will be an increase in the pool of talent for our industry.”

The National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation announced it will recognize country music artist Sara Evans with the 2018 Service to America Leadership Award.

She will receive the award at NABEF’s Celebration of Service to America Awards on June 12 at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington. The leadership award recognizes individuals and organizations responsible for improving lives through public service.

Evans serves as a Red Cross ambassador and in 2008 was presented with its national Crystal Cross award for her advocacy. Also, she recently raised more than $10,000 for the CMA Foundation, which helps fund music education programs; and she has also provided support for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Children’s Miracle Network, Alabama Forever and the Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.

“Sara Evans continues to grace the country music charts with her stunning voice and lyrical authenticity to the delight of fans everywhere,” said NABEF President Marcellus Alexander. “She also gives voice to a diverse group of causes working to make our world a better place. It is an honor to present her with NABEF’s highest award.”

She will also perform at the event. She has had five number one country singles: “No Place That Far,” “Suds in the Bucket,” “A Real Fine Place to Start,” “Born to Fly” and “A Little Bit Stronger;” and her most recent album debuted at number two on Billboard’s Top Country Albums Chart.

This year, she headlined the “CMT Next Women of Country Tour.”

She has previously been honored with the Academy of Country Music Top Female vocalist accolade and Country Music Association Video of the Year trophy, as well as American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards and Grammy Awards nominations.

These local broadcasters will be honored for outstanding community service at the Celebration of Service to America dinner June 12 at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington. The awards are sponsored and produced by NABEF with major support from the National Association of Broadcasters, Bonneville International and Hearst Television.

The NABEF President’s Special Award recognizes extraordinary achievement by an individual broadcast station or group of broadcasters.

In recognition of broadcasters’ service to before, during and after historic hurricanes and wildfires in 2017, broadcasters in Florida, Puerto Rico, Texas and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as those in California, Montana, Oregon and Washington, will receive special honors. WASHINGTON—Now in its 20th year, the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation’s Celebration of Service to America Awards is officially accepting entries for 2018. The awards recognize “outstanding community service” by local broadcasters, per NABEF’s description.

A new wrinkle in this year’s awards is the creation of new categories based on market size. One radio and one television honoree will be awarded in each of the following categories: Broadcast ownership group; large/major market (TV DMAs 1-50, radio markets 1-50); medium market (TV DMAs 51-100, radio markets 51-150); and small market (TV DMAs 101-210, radio markets 151-300). The awards will continue to recognize broadcasters for individual campaigns, projects or programs that serve the public good and provide service to local communities.

WASHINGTON—FedEx will be rubbing elbows with members of the broadcast industry at the NAB Education Foundation’s 19th annual Celebration of Service to America Awards. FedEx is being recognized with the organization’s Corporate Leadership Award, which is presented to a company outside of the broadcast industry that exemplifies community service and corporate social responsibility.

The NABEF award is in part recognition for the FedEx Cares platform, which the company uses to invest in communities around the world. Through FedEx Cares, the FedEx network, team members and resources connect people globally and are expected to contribute $200 million in more than 200 communities by 2020. The program’s Delivery for Good component is designed to provide urgent aid to communities in times of emergency.

In addition, FedEx has worked with Direct Relief for more than a decade and has partnered with the United Services Organization as its primary shipper for 15 years. FedEx has also donated to communities in areas such as road safety, global entrepreneurship, sustainable transportation and employment pathways.

FedEx employees also donated more than $12 million to charitable organizations and volunteered 90,000+ hours during the 2016 FedEx Cares United Way Campaign.

NABEF will present the Corporate Leadership Award to FedEx during the official Celebration of Service to America Awards event on June 20 in Washington D.C.

WASHINGTON—Musician Jon Bon Jovi is being recognized for his philanthropy work by the NAB Education Foundation as he will receive the 2017 Service to America Leadership Award. Recognized for his efforts to combat poverty and homelessness, Bon Jovi will receive the award at NABEF’s Celebration of Service to America Awards on June 20.

In addition to being the front man for the Grammy-winning band that shares his name, Bon Jovi is also the chairman of the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering positive change and helping the lives of those in need “one soul at time,” per the organization’s manifesto.

Some of the organization’s recent endeavors included working with Fulfill and The Peoples Pantry to open The B.E.A.T. Center (Bring Everyone All Together), a community hub that allows families and individuals in need to access food, job training and other resources in Ocean County, N.J. The organization has also opened multiple JBJ Soul Kitchens and aided local recovery efforts after Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

WASHINGTON—The winners of the 2017 Celebration of Service to America Awards have been announced by the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation (NABEF). The honorees, recognized for their community service efforts, will be presented their awards at the Celebration of Service to America dinner.

Here is the full list of winners:

The President’s Special Award honors historic and extraordinary achievement by an individual broadcast station or group. This year’s winner is WXIA-TV in Atlanta for its “Charlie Foxtrot” piece on the Fairness for Veterans Act and a subsequent online petition in support of the act, which was signed into law on Dec. 23, 2016.

Recognizing a TV station for its efforts and commitment to serving its community, the Service to America Television Award will be presented to WDIV-TV from Detroit. Recent efforts included a telethon to raise money for Flint, Mich. Other finalists in the category included WAFB-TV from Baton Rouge, La.; WCVB-TV in Boston; WKMG-TV in Orlando, Fla.; and WSB-TV from Atlanta.

The Service to Children award honors radio and TV stations that conduct programs aimed at children. Winners in the radio category were WEDR-FM in Hollywood, Fla., for its efforts to provide students backpacks and school supplies and its “Fore-Life” program that teaches golf, disciplinary and math skills. KTAR/KMVP of Phoenix was the other finalist. On the TV side, WMUR-TV from Manchester, N.H., was recognized for its “Home at Last” series benefiting foster children. KWTX in Waco, Texas, and WNYT-TV in Albany, N.Y., were also recognized as finalists.

Radio and TV winners were also selected for the Service to Community Award. San Antonio’s KZLV-FM was the radio honoree for its “Share the Love” campaign that promotes local volunteers. WRAL-TV in Raleigh, N.C., was the recognized TV station for its “Black and Blue” documentary on the relationship between police and the African American community. Other finalists included the Illinois Broadcast Association; KGBX-FM in Springfield, Mo.; St. Louis’ KSHE-FM; Las Vegas’ KSOS-FM; WFEZ-FM from Hollywood, Fla.; and WTAM-AM in Cleveland for radio. TV finalists included KGMB of Honolulu; KTUU from Anchorage, Alaska; WAFB-TV; Baltimore’s WBAL; and WXIA.

The Celebration of Service to America dinner will take place on June 20 at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington.

WASHINGTON—Recruiters looking to take part in the NAB Education Foundation’s (NABEF) Media Sales Institute are now eligible to register.

MSI is a seven-day program that trains recent college graduates for careers in media sales. Registered recruiters will be able to observe program participants, conduct one-on-one interviews and earn Equal Employment Opportunity credit. The 2017 MSI will be held at three locations: Florida A&M University, May 15-16; Howard University, June 12-13; and Arizona State University, June 12-13.

NABEF designed the program’s curriculum to reflect current industry trends and provide participants training on how to become multi-platform account executives in radio, television, cable and digital sales.

WASHINGTON—Some NAB Show attendees might want to have their resumes on hand as the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation (NABEF) will host the NAB Show Career Fair. The event is part of NABEF’s commitment to promoting diversity in the workplace and will offer entry-level and executive-level professionals to meet broadcast and media companies, per the press release.

The Career Fair will offer panel discussions, one-on-one career coaching, resume workshops and hiring opportunities for various careers within the broadcast industry.

The event is co-produced by the Broadcast Education Association.

The NAB Show Career Fair will be held on April 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino. Recruiters and job seekers can register here.

NEW YORK—The NAB Education Foundation will recognize winners of the 2016 Excellence in Innovative Technology Awards at the Innovation Celebration on Nov. 9 at NAB Show New York at a luncheon.

The awards showcase students who developed a product related to television, radio, digital, mobile technologies, social media, streaming, information management, web or other telecommunications-based applications. The winners are:

• Andrew Briz of the University of Florida developed News-ready Hypervideo Player at UF’s Innovation News Center. The app enables news organizations to simplify navigation between links, videos, charts and graphics, without any coding education.
• Adriana Becerra, Ryan Hayes, Mark Quinones, Garish Rama and Prashanna Raghavan, all of Arizona State University, developed two applications that utilize and showcase 360-technology and virtual reality. One was created for Cronkite News, featuring several 360-technology elements; the other combines computer-generated imagery, 360 video and regular video to depict crossing the U.S./Mexico border.
• Noelle Vela of Texas Tech University developed a political gaming Android app through the Texas Tech College of Media and Communication, with sponsorship from the Jay Harris Institute for Hispanic and International Communication. Vozra educates teenage Hispanics about the electoral process with quizzes, surveys and polling.

All prototypes will be presented at the luncheon at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. OpenMatter CEO Barry Libert will also provide the keynote address at the event. He is the author of “The Network Imperative: How to Survive and Grow in the Age of Digital Business Models.”

“The media industry is in a constant state of evolution. New technologies and products are shaping the way we conduct business and lead our lives,” said NABEF President Marcellus Alexander. “The NAB Education Foundation is honored to highlight the groundbreaking work and innovative projects these forward-thinking students have developed.”

Various networking opportunities with other broadcasters, FCC staff, communications attorneys and members of the banking community, were also offered.

WASHINGTON—Actress and humanitarian Sharon Stone will receive the 2016 Service to America Leadership Award from the NAB Education Foundation (NABEF). Stone will receive the honor for her ongoing commitment to raising awareness and support of AIDS research, prevention and treatment, according to the announcement.

The Service to America Leadership Award recognizes individuals and organizations responsible for improving the lives of others through extraordinary public service. Considered NABEF’s highest individual honor, the award will be presented during the Celebration of Service to America Awards held Tuesday, June 21, at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C.

“Sharon Stone is a gifted actress and humanitarian recognized for her work both on and off the screen,” said NABEF President Marcellus Alexander. “Her tireless advocacy efforts have helped the AIDS research community come closer to finding a cure for one of the world’s most crippling epidemics.”

In 1995, Stone began working with The Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), an international nonprofit dedicated to the support of AIDS research, HIV prevention, treatment education and advocacy of AIDS-related public policy. She has helped raise millions of dollars to support finding a cure, in addition to major treatment advances for pediatric AIDS care, said the announcement. In 2002, Stone was honored by the Human Rights Campaign for her contribution to combating the epidemic. In 2013, she also received the Peace Summit Award at the Nobel Peace Summit for her continuous humanitarian efforts.

WASHINGTON—The National Association of Broadcasters Educational Foundation (NABEF) has announced the winners of the 2016 Celebration of Service to America Award winners. The organization says the awards recognize community service by local broadcasters.

Among the awards handed out is the President’s Special Award, which recognizes what the NABEF describes as “historic and extraordinary achievement by broadcasters.” This year’s winner was the Arizona Broadcasters Association, which in partnership with the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, created the “Hooked: Tracking Heroin’s Hold on Arizona” special, which was broadcasted on both radio and television.

The Service to America Television Award winner was also announced. Given to a station “for the totality of its efforts and its commitment to excellence in serving its community,” per NABEF, the 2016 winner was KWTX-TV in Waco, Texas.

The other award recipients announced include WBIQ-TV Birmingham, Ala., which was presented with the Service to Children Award for TV; the CBS Radio-owned WXYT-FM in Southfield, Mich., was the winner on the radio side. For the Service to Community Award, NABEF honored Reno, Nev.-based TV station KOLO-TV; Cox Radio Group in Miami won for radio.

All winners will be recognized at the Celebration of Service to America dinner, which is set to take place June 21 at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington.

WASHINGTON—A total of 10 recent graduates and young professionals who focus on technology have been selected to participate in the NAB Education Foundation’s 2016 Technology Apprenticeship Program. The award, which recognizes outstanding community service by local broadcasters, will be handed out during the Celebration of Service to America gala on June 21 in Washington D.C.

There are three categories for the awards:

• Service to America Community Awards for Radio and Television – honors broadcasters or individual campaigns, projects or programs that serve the public good or otherwise provide exemplary service to local communities
• Service to Children Awards for Radio and Television – recognizes broadcasters for outstanding programs, campaigns and public service announcements that serve the children of the communities
• Service to America Television Award – acknowledges a TV station for its efforts and commitment to excellence in serving its community
