LAS VEGAS—At the 2017 NAB Show, Xendata will debut the new FX-Series, which combines shared disk storage and archive on a single server. The all-in-one server simplifies collaborative media production workflows by avoiding storage boundaries associated with multiple shared disk or archive storage volumes.

The FX-Series offers two independent storage volumes suitable for 4K or greater workflows, and an archive volume that supports an attached LTO library, optical disc archive library, or Microsoft Azure cloud storage. Presented as a single standard NTFS volume, the shared disk storage comes available with 120TB, 180TB or 240TB of usable capacity, and the 120TB or 180TB volumes are upgradeable. The archive volume is presented as a single file system that’s expandable to multiple petabytes.

Since the shared disk storage and archive are local to a single FX server, high data transfer speeds can be achieved when moving content between the two volumes, while avoiding the typical loss of performance when transferring over a network.

With the API-driven data mover that allows file transfer between the shared disk and the archive volumes from the user interface of third-party applications, content creators can easily capitalize on the faster transfer speeds between the volumes. CatDV from Squarebox Systems, MXFserver from Film Partners, asset management systems from CISTECH and axle Video’s MAM are among the third-party products that already support Xendata’s API.

With a network attached storage (NAS) architecture, the FX-Series runs on a Windows Server 2012 R2 operating system, which is compliant with the Microsoft security model, making it easier to integrate into a Windows domain or workgroup. It also comes with 10 GbE copper or SFP+ optical network ports that can be bonded for increased performance.

LAS VEGAS—To support the broadcast industry through several critical technological transitions, Tektronix will be demonstrating new IP/SDI, 4K/HDR and ABR monitoring products at the 2017 NAB Show. For the SDI to IP transition, Tektronix will demonstrate PRISM, which provides real time monitoring and analysis of IP streams and associated content, particularly for early identification and diagnosis of network or content issues, such as intermittent loss of video, audio, or data content.

The PRISM demo will cover analysis of PTP synchronization timing, SMPTE ST 2022-7 redundancy support, IGMP V3 and API support for system integration into network management systems, and IP stream capture for deep dive analysis.

With growing demand for 4K/UHD content with HDR picture quality, the Tektronix WFM8000 series of 4K HDR waveform monitors enables 4K HDR content creation, from acquisition through post-production. With the ability to view new HDR capabilities, WFM/WVR8000 products ensure that high-quality content with HDR images deliver a highly realistic viewing experience.

For the transition to adaptive bit rate (ABR) delivery models, Tektronix Sentry ABR and Aurora file-based QC solutions provide Perceptual Video Quality (PVQ) measurements that detect video compression artifacts that affect the viewer’s quality of experience. The Sentry ABR adds an end-to-end view of the Quality of Experience (QoE) for all profiles by decrypting and decoding the live video and audio from origin or caching servers for both encrypted and unencrypted content.

LAS VEGAS—At the 2017 NAB Show, Rycote will provide the Essentials, including advanced Stickies, Undercovers and Overcovers that shield lavalier mics (lavs) from picking up unwanted rustling noises from wind or clothing.

The latest Stickies are double-sided, hypoallergenic, adhesive pads that affix lavs directly onto a person’s skin or clothing. Available in round, square, and other shapes, they’re also larger and stickier, with peel-off tabs. Also on display will be new, advanced Overcovers for lavs that utilize discrete fur coverings for wind-noise protection. They’re 26mm in size to match DPA concealers, and come in black, grey, beige and white.

Rycote will also show the InVision Lite (INV-Lite) boom shock mount for smaller, lighter shotgun mics. It features a new cam-lever clamp system and secure foam for wind protection. Available in two versions, the INV-Lite (19) is compatible with mics, such as the DPA 4017B, 4017C, 4018, Sanken CS-1e and Sennheiser MKH 8060, 8050, 8040 and 8020, and the INV-Lite (21) suits the Schoeps MiniCMIT.

The Baseball, introduced in February 2017, offers a fast, practical solution to the ‘swooshing’ noise problem experienced by many sound pros when booming. This 3-inch windscreen for interior boom pole use offers performance improvements over conventional foam windscreens, while allowing rapid attachment and removal. The 19/20mm version is compatible with DPA 4018, Schoeps CMC series and Sennheiser MKH 8040 and 8050, and the 24/25mm version suits Sennheiser MKH 40 and MKH 50 mics.

LAS VEGAS—Omnitek’s latest Ultra broadcast waveform rasterizer, the Ultra TQ, is making the trip to the 2017 NAB Show. The Ultra TQ incorporates functionality from the Ultra 4K Tool Box and Ultra XR products to support HDR and wide color gamut production.

The Ultra TQ provides analysis of SD, HD and 3G-SDI formats, with an upgrade path to 4K/UHD. Its analyzer instruments include picture, waveform monitor, vectorscope, gamut meters, audio monitoring, and loudness measurement, video timing, video/audio status monitoring, event logging and closed caption logging.

The picture monitor provides HD display with closed captions overlay, safe area cages and Omnitek’s O-Zone for false color display for HDR/SDR production. The Waveform monitor displays YCbCr or YRGB, full horizontal & vertical zoom of single, multiple or all line displays, analyzing a full frame video or region of interest.

The integrated line test pattern generator, which generates 38 line-patterns, can be upgraded to a full test pattern generator with moving and static zone plates and test sequences, and the Ultra TQ logs physical and functional parameters of the video signal for QC and compliance.

LAS VEGAS—RUSHWORKS will introduce the VDX T-Bar control surface, which integrates with its VDESK and REMO multi-camera integrated production systems, at the 2017 NAB Show. Developed in response to customer requests, the VDX gives VDESK and REMO users new features and capabilities, such as manual transitions, shortcut keys and multi-camera preset selection for integrated pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) cameras.

The VDX allows operators to select complex video effects with keyboard shortcuts, all of which have graphical depictions for ease of use. In combination with other features—such as multiple transition and effect controls, access to more than 100 PTZ/PTX presets using the keypad, integrated robotic camera and dolly control, and integrated streaming tools—VDX enhances the live TV production environment.

VDESK, and its portable counterpart REMO, support up to 12 inputs and feature switching, program and ISO-recording, a file browser, creation of multiple playlists, a downstream keyer, chromakeyer, and dozens of transitions and effects, like PiP and double-box shots.

Dynamic Auto Zoom (DAZ) is now integrated within RUSHWORK’s robotic camera control platform. Rather than being limited to static PTZ presets, DAZ provides options for motion presets. Ctrl+R, the company’s software-based camera control application, can now replace traditional hardware controllers with an intuitive, easy-to-use utility that also supports DAZ.

LAS VEGAS—Quicklink’s Remote Communicator is ready for the 2017 NAB Show. This solution can be used to create ultra-low delay video/audio contributions from any device using a web browser, easily share high quality return video to a remote user and integrate ultra-low delay audio commentary into your workflow.

Users can stream video and audio to a web browser and return video and audio, or audio only, in real time, full duplex with ultra-low delay.

LAS VEGAS—Ericsson will highlight advances in 8K 360-degree video, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), as well as launch its MediaFirst Stream Personalization solution at the 2017 NAB Show.

Visitors to Ericsson’s booth will see an industry innovation zone featuring immersive multi-TV VR, 8K 360-degree video experiences and AR sports graphics, enabled by cutting-edge media processing and delivery technologies.

Ericsson will also demo the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) devices with its MediaFirst TV Platform, which transforms the TV interface into the control center of the smart home. Using Ericsson’s frame-accurate dynamic ad insertion and content replacement solutions for over-the-top (OTT) streaming, MediaFirst Stream Personalization helps broadcasters personalize and monetize multiscreen video services to provide content tailored to the individual.

It works across multiple formats with any player, and offers the ability to insert ads in HLS, Smooth Streaming, and MPEGDASH. It also offers comprehensive usage logs, which when coupled with analytics, enables a better understanding of audiences and business intelligence.

Ericsson will also introduce new captioning services, including: Snap Captions for offline captioning, the cloud-based Subito Vault captioning workflow, and the Subito Conversion and Delivery Engine, which automatically converts broadcast caption files for cross-platform output and delivery.

LAS VEGAS—The 2017 NAB Show will be the unveiling of Comrex’s Opal, a new IP audio gateway that allows remote call-in guests to deliver studio-quality sound without the need for special equipment on their end. They simply click a link to connect with Opal, which then uses the Opus encoder for excellent fidelity and low delay.

Comrex will also show ACCESS NX, the latest audio IP codec in its ACCESS line. The ACCESS NX hardware platform is optimized for running CrossLock, which enables powerful error correction and network bonding. It also intelligently monitors and dynamically adjusts network connections in real-time.

ACCESS and BRIC-Link II versatile, reliable IP audio codecs will also be on display. Comrex will also demo the VH2 two-line hybrid that provides superb audio over VoIP phone lines, and STAC VIP, a VoIP call management system for larger-scale talk shows with between six and 12 callers. And, LiveShot live ENG technology, which delivers real-time, high-quality two-way video and audio over IP networks, will also be displayed.

LAS VEGAS—At the 2017 NAB Show, Cobalt Digital will spotlight the 9991-SDI-TO-IP-10GE IP Encapsulator, which offers SDI to IP, AES and analog audio embedding/de-embedding capabilities. Also, the 9991-IP-TO-SDI-10GE De-Encapsulator offers SMPTE 2022-6 or 2110 IP-to-SDI, as well as AES and analog audio embedding/de-embedding. It is also now available as part of the Blue Box Group of compact, rugged, and portable converter boxes.

Cobalt Digital will also show the 9904-UDX-4K, an advanced scaler and image processor capable of handling 4K over a single 12G-SDI connector or processing four independent 3G-SDI channels. It has two HDMI 2.0 outputs for monitoring.

For 4K distribution, Cobalt offers six 12G/3G/HD/SD equalized, re-clocked outputs, ideal for increasing the distance a 4K signal can travel over a single copper wire. It is now available in a Blue Box Group small throw down format.

Cobalt will also have the 9971-MV6-4K multiviewer, a cost effective means of driving evaluation grade monitors and leveraging 4K prosumer/consumer monitors to provide more pixel space to your source signals, while maintaining the original picture information.

The Cobalt RP-168 offers clean switching on the outputs of the 9941-RTR series of SDI/ASI/MADI routers for the openGear form factor. The 9941-RTR series provides a high-density card-based solution within the openGear platform.

Other Cobalt products to be featured at the show are: unified control interfaces for larger multiviewers, HDMI/SDI media converters and the FAST-STREAM Frame Accurate SCTE Trigger insertion and enhanced H.264 streaming platform.

LAS VEGAS—Adder’s IP-based KVM products are set to make an appearance at the 2017 NAB Show, including the Adder CCS-PRO8, ADDERLink XDIP and ADDERLink INFINITY. Broadcast control rooms and post-production suites can use Adder’s KVM solutions to enable streamlined workflows, improve user ergonomics and gain remote access to critical computing hardware.

The Adder CCS-PRO8 is a command and control switch that enables users to seamlessly control up to eight different machines across eight displays with just a mouse and keyboard, with access to multiple monitors through a single pane of glass interface.

The ADDERLink XDIP is a high-performance IP-based KVM with an ultra-low latency extender or matrix that gives AV professionals a flexible, user-friendly way to maintain control from a single facility or multiple locations.

LAS VEGAS—Yamaha will have a new CS-R10-S control surface as wellas firmware updates for its RIVAGE PM10 and TF Series digital mixing systems at the 2017 NAB Show. The new CS-R10-S control surface offers the same functionality of the existing CS-R10, at two-thirds the size.

With a dual console function, to be supported in a future update, two CS-R10 and/or CS-R10-S control surfaces can be connected to a single DSP-R10 DSP engine enabling separate CS-R10-S control surfaces to be used at front of house and monitor mix positions.

The Yamaha Rivage PM10 firmware update V1.5 includes an Eventide H3000 Live Ultra-Harmonizer plug-in and Dan Dugan Sound Design automatic mixer plug-in, which provide outstanding effect quality, while optimizing live-sound operations.

Yamaha is also releasing firmware update v3.5, which adds Dugan Speech System automixing to Yamaha TF Series digital mixers. Developed with Dan Dugan Sound Design Inc., the update includes the original automatic microphone-mixing algorithm that helps professional audio engineers cue multiple live mics in situations with unpredictable dialogue.

The Dugan automixer can be applied to up to eight channels in the TF Series, automatically raising the gain of mic inputs that are active, while lowering the gain of inactive mic inputs, and adjusting each to create a consistent overall mix level. This capability, which eliminates the need for complex fader operation, is also included in Yamaha QL and CL Series consoles.

LAS VEGAS—Wohler is heading to the 2017 NAB Show with a full range of monitoring solutions for multichannel audio and video over IP, including the iAM-MIX multichannel audio monitor and mixer, the iAM-AUDIO audio monitor, and the iAM-VIDEO multichannel audio and video monitoring and metering device.

The iAM Series is a compact unit for monitoring audio/video parameters associated with an expanding range of signal types. These products use small form-factor pluggable (SFP) slots to enable simple adaptation of interfaces and selection of signal I/O, enabling an upgrade path to new audio protocols, such as Dante and AES67 for audio over IP.

Based on high-quality hardware with upgradable software, these monitors have an on-board web server that allows multiple units on the same network to be monitored, controlled and updated via a browser-based user interface and API calls from third-party connected devices.

Wohler’s iAM-MIX allows users to monitor a MADI stream with 64 audio channels through one user-friendly device. It features an intuitive front-panel control surface and integrates with popular A/V routers. The iAM-AUDIO has touch-panel interfaces allowing intuitive command and control of the unit, and new I/O options, including Dante and Ravenna, combined with rich data displays and audio monitoring through front-mounting speakers and subwoofers.

iAM-VIDEO adds extensive video monitoring of 3G-SDI, and video over IP formats (MPEG2/4 TS and SMPTE 2022). It also monitors MPEG2/4 TSoIP, MPEG2/4 TSoASI, Quad-Link UHD/4K, SMPTE 2022-6 and more.

LAS VEGAS—V-Nova Ltd., a video compression solutions provider, will showcase its next-generation V-Nova Perseus video processing technology at the 2017 NAB Show. V-Nova Perseus 2 expands the codec’s capability to enhance performance, simplify deployment and reduce operating costs through improved efficiency. It addresses IP video delivery bottlenecks, allowing for a better viewer experience across all data networks.

The software optimizes performance at key operating points for service delivery, including 100 kbps, the minimum necessary for delivering mobile video to all consumers. LAS VEGAS—At the 2017 NAB Show, Solid State Logic (SSL) will highlight new options that give its System T automated broadcast audio production system direct control of the broadcast mix without need for a dedicated physical console. System T is a powerful set of network objects that include processing engines, audio I/O devices and control interfaces, including mixing console surfaces and PC-based control via T-SOLSA.

The new Tempest Control Rack (TCR) and T25 Tempest Processor Engine options facilitate applications such as automated and remote fly-pack production. The TCR, which runs System T control software, allows the screen to be mounted in 19-inch racks or angled studio furniture. And the Tempest Processor Engine uses SSL’s Optimal Core processing for real-time, 64-bit CPU-based, floating point mixing and processing.

With the T25 Engine, the system now offers an economical version for 256 paths, which supplements the original T80 version for 800 paths. The TCR and Tempest Engines can be used with any SSL Network I/O or third party Dante or AES67 products to build large, scalable AoIP infrastructures and connect to other AoIP systems.

Dante by Audinate provides interoperability, including audio transport, registration and capability discovery, and configuration and routing control across products from more than 350 manufacturers. Network I/O and Dante products can be controlled and routed directly from TCR or System T surfaces and via many third-party routing control systems via the Dante API.

LAS VEGAS—Rohde & Schwarz will use the 2017 NAB Show as the premiere of the R&S SDE900, the world's first IT server-based exciter solution for ATSC 3.0 broadcasts, according to the company. The SDE900 provides broadcasters with an easy upgrade path for existing transmitters, such as the R&S THU9 and R&S THU9evo high-power transmitters from Rohde & Schwarz, to ATSC 3.0 and future standards. The R&S SDE900 is a plug-in rackmount module for the R&S Tx9 generation of transmitters. The R&S SDE900’s software-based encoder generates the I/Q modulation data on its high-performance IT server and the R&S TCE900/TCE901 exciter generates the COFDM waveform based upon the I/Q data.

The R&S SDE900 will initially be available for high-power transmitters. The transmitters were part of the world's first broadcast in the ATSC 3.0 UHD standard when Seoul Broadcasting System in South Korea used the R&S THU9 to broadcast the first sports event in ATSC 3.0 last December.

Rohde will also showcase the R&S Prismon monitoring and multiviewing solution. With its multi-standard, multi-protocol approach, R&S Prismon offers increased functionality for playout and contribution, making it cost-efficient and future-proof for broadcast and streaming media providers.

R&S Prismon software supports SMPTE 2022-1/2, SMPTE 2022-6, AIMS, ASPEN, HLS, MPEG-DASH, MPEG-2/4, HEVC and TICO, as well as SDI. Future media formats and protocols can be added via software upgrades. It’s also available as a standard IT platform, as well as a cloud-based solution.

A large number of channels, including UHD quality, can be monitored in parallel with R&S Prismon and visualized on a multiviewer video wall. It also offers a web-based user interface, as well as a mobile app enabling technicians to identify and assess the sources and effects of errors without an on-site visit.

Rohde & Schwarz will also exhibit the R&S Venice ingest and playout system that incorporates software-based functionality for SD through 4K workflows. During ingest, users can start transferring the content and editing it with Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro and Avid Media Composer. It handles all current codecs, including Apple ProRes, Avid DNxHR and Sony XAVC, and new ones can be added anytime. R&S Venice allows convenient playout of mixed formats and codecs without prior transcoding, and the signaling and processing architecture is ready to handle HDR workflows.

LAS VEGAS—At the 2017 NAB Show, MultiDyne will present its new LightBrix VB-3800 Series fiber transport solution, which is designed to address evolving camera configurations efficiently and flexibly.

With its unique modules and adapters, it supports connectivity across today’s popular field production cameras. And having the camera position free of power outlets enables flexible setup, strike and mobility. It also adapts to the signal type and count of new and existing camera models. As new modules are added, it can meet the specifications of new camera models that come to market.

With its compact architecture, the VB-3800 ensures quick, easy mounting in advance of live shoots, with immediate pairing to a receive card in an openGear frame that’s ready for dashboard monitoring at the studio, head-end or mobile production truck.

The LightBrix VB-3800 Series offers several models built for mounting to POV box cameras and robotic PTZ heads, each of which supports between six and 24 fiber transport connections for video, audio, data and Ethernet. It also transports multichannel camera signals, including 4K quad-link and 12G, as well as optional supply power from the base unit to the transmitter and camera via SMPTE hybrid cable.

As the product line expands, the VB-3800 Series will evolve to accommodate UHD scaling and signal conversions, including conversions of 4K quad-link input signals to 12G and HDMI at the output.

LAS VEGAS—Hitachi Kokusai Electric Comark LLC (Comark) is preparing a live glass-to-glass ATSC 3.0 demo—from image capture through RF transmission and reception—for the 2017 NAB Show. The exhibit will feature the company’s ATSC 3.0 Starter solution, which integrates HEVC encoding of SD, HD and UHD programs, the Broadcast Gateway and a simple user interface for system configuration.

The ATSC 3.0 Starter works with the EXACT-V2 exciter IP-optimized platform featuring 7 GbE ports. It’s compatible with the STL interface (A/324) and offers an optional built-in ALP encapsulation and dualCast technology, which can be upgraded from ATSC 1.0 to 3.0. During the demo, the company’s Z-HD5500 studio and field production cameras will capture video, and its QoS-1000 RF testing and monitoring solution will monitor the transmitter’s RF output.

Parallax

Comark will also display its new Parallax medium to high-power liquid cooled, solid-state transmitter, available in UHF and now VHF band 3. With the highest RF output power capability and power density on the market, the Parallax stacks up to 16 VHF power amplifiers (PA) in a single rack cabinet and delivers up to 23kW.

Power levels can be scaled higher with multiple cabinets or scaled back to as few as 3x1.6kW amplifiers for 4.3kW output power. The VHF PA’s utilize Doherty LDMOS technology that delivers up to 50 percent efficiency, with an equivalent output power in ATSC 1.0 (8VSB) and ATSC 3.0 (OFDM).

Parallax can be controlled and monitored via an optional Wi-Fi connection using a smart phone or digital tablet, and the control system enables Comark’s customer service group to remotely diagnose transmitter operations and perform remote software updates.

LAS VEGAS—The Optical Devices Division of Fujifilm will unveil its new MK Series of ultra-compact, lightweight cinema lenses designed with the emerging cinematographer in mind at this year’s NAB Show. The series includes the Fujinon MK18-55mm T2.9 standard zoom lens, with an 18-55mm focal length, and the Fujinon MK50-135mm T2.9 zoom, which will be available this summer.

Fujinon MK 50-135mm

Together, the lenses have a combined focal length range of 18-135mm, in the Super 35mm format, covering the most frequently used range utilized by emerging cinematographers, who typically shoot projects, such as documentaries, online programming, independent films and corporate videos.

These Fujinon cine lenses offer edge-to-edge optical performance, low distortion, a Flange Focal Distance adjustment function, and three rings for manual and independent adjustment of focus, zoom and iris (aperture). They’re compatible with E-mount cameras with Super 35mm/APS-C sensors, although X mount versions are in development. The lenses require only one matte box and filter size between them.

The MK18-55mm and MK50-135mm lenses have a seamless manual iris, zero breathing, no ramping or zoom shift, and a 200-degree focus rotation, while maintaining focus throughout the zoom range. They only weigh 2.16 pounds, with front diameters of 85mm and lengths of 206mm. The MK18-55mm’s minimum object distance (MOD) is .85 meters/2.78 feet, while the MK 50-135mm’s MOD is 1.2m/3.93 feet.

LAS VEGAS—The Smart Deployment Series (SDS) tripod from Cartoni is set to go at the 2017 NAB Show, as well as fluid heads for broadcast, studio and digital cinema cameras.

LAS VEGAS—At the 2017 NAB Show, Axle Video will reveal axle 2017, the fifth generation of its axle media management software, which now doubles the capacity of media that can be managed to more than two million video, image and audio files. This solution allows users to quickly browse, find, tag and reuse media, while collaborating more cost-effectively with others.

The latest axle 2017 version offers an Advanced Transcode option for axle Gear, which allows proxy encoding and other transcoding tasks. This includes high-resolution transcodes of clips and sub-clips to be dispatched to a transcode engine powered by Imagine Products’ Prime Transcode and other integrated transcode tools. Advanced Transcode leverages Prime Transcode’s support for newer formats, such as native RED and ARRI camera raw files, including acceleration via multicore CPUs, GPUs and RED’s Red Rocket hardware.

This version also adds a cloud mirror option for maintaining an externally accessible echo of internal H.264 proxy media and metadata, facilitating faster review and approval workflows. This cloud gateway can be integrated with other cloud software, or custom applications that access data via axle’s REST API.

The new version also supports a wider range of metadata fields, including multi-select tag clouds, pop-up date fields and large text fields that can be used for scripts or other long documents, as well as enhanced elastic search capability with auto-hinting of search results as you type. LAS VEGAS—Aviwest will debut PRO180+, which adds expanded global connectivity to its DMNG PRO video uplink series, at the 2017 NAB Show. The PRO180+ supports most cellular networks deployed worldwide, including the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Canada, Latin America and most of Asia.

CHELMSFORD, MASS.—Broadcast Pix is going IP for the 2017 NAB Show, announcing that it will debut the new BPswitch family of integrated video production switchers, which feature control-over-IP from tablets, phones and panels. The new switcher offers enhanced BPNet, hybrid SDI and IP I/O, streaming, NewBlueNTX graphics, optional robotic camera control and are 4K upgradeable.

The BPswitch uses the Broadcast Pix Commander user interface for control through tablets, phones and laptops. The interface can control a local or remote BPswitch over IP using BPNet. Through the interface, users can perform switching, add titles, clips and effects, and control robotic cameras to execute live productions. Broadcast Pix is also making its BPview multi-view capable to be used in a browser, enabling control of either local or remote BPswitch systems over IP.

With the BPswitch, users can place the switcher with the cameras for remote control over IP using a standard internet connection. It also has the capability to control remote IP cameras like Sony and Panasonic robotic cameras.

An updated to the BPNet IP ecosystem provides the BPswitch with new control-over-IP capabilities with low control latency. BPNet security prevents unauthorized users from controlling a switcher with extended encryption and two factor authentication. It also provides ioGates cloud-based media management services, which allow for remote control of the switcher’s media, cloud storage, transcoding and delivery of content anywhere.

Broadcast Pix will have three new models of the BPswitch, the FX, MX and GX, all of which provide up to 22 SDI inputs and 12 outputs. LAS VEGAS—As a distributor of Axon production tools, Utah Scientific will be at the 2017 NAB Show demonstrating Axon’s new SynView multiviewer, a format-agnostic solution capable of handling 4K and IP video formats. Ideal for monitoring walls from small to extremely large, SynView’s feature-set has been enhanced with double the inputs, eight times the outputs (heads), UHD/4K/60Hz resolution on display outputs, and a six-fold increase in processing power.

SynView models, including SDI I/O or Ethernet I/O, can be combined to form a hybrid multiviewer with up to hundreds of inputs, and eight 1080p outputs on SDI, or two outputs of UHD/4K resolution. It can now scale, position, de-embed, overlay and process eight video channels, and multiple connector panels allow for different I/O configurations.

As broadcasters move from standard dynamic range to high dynamic range, Axon has developed new products that handle this transition by utilizing Look Up Tables (LUTS). New products include the U4T200/240, a 4K (UHD) four-wire toolbox with LUT based color space and dynamic range converter, and the UXU400/410, a 4K-UHD format converter with LUT based color space and dynamic range converter.

Utah Scientific will also show Axon’s Cerebrum control and monitoring system, which is ideal for mobile, news, live studio and remote production, as well as master control. Recent software enhancements make it easier to monitor and control multiple, third-party devices on one easy-to-use interface.

The team will demonstrate Cerebrum’s integration with Utah’s S2022 IP router, which delivers SDI, including UHD, and S2022 content, in compliance with the AIMS roadmap for the IP transition.

LAS VEGAS—The Matrox booth at the 2017 NAB Show will highlight the Monarch HDX dual-channel broadcast streaming and recording appliance, which enables closed captioning integration while streaming and/or recording. 

Monarch HDX

The Monarch HDX retrieves closed-captioning data from the SDI VANC, and then streams this caption-enhanced H.264 media to video hosting platforms, including YouTube Live and Ustream, media servers like Wowza, or content delivery networks (CDNs). When MOV/MP4 files are recorded with Monarch HDX, the captions are preserved, and can be used in video on demand (VOD) or archiving workflows.

The Matrox Maevex 6150 quad encoder, which captures, encodes and records up to four 4K inputs, enables streaming and/or recording of four or more channels simultaneously at high quality and low bit rates. It also works with multiple protocols—including RTP, RTMP, RTSP, MPEG2.TS—and can be programmed and controlled using Matrox PowerStream Plus software, as well as custom applications incorporating the PowerStream Plus API, or started/stopped directly on the device itself.

Matrox will also show the Monarch HD, which takes an HDMI input from a source, such as a camera, and generates an encoded stream that’s compliant with IP protocols (RTSP or RTMP) for webcast. While encoding video at bitrates suitable for live streaming, it simultaneously records a high-quality file (MP4 or MOV) to an SD card, USB drive, or network-mapped drive for post event editing.

DP1.2-VisionXG

The DisplayPort KVM extender system DP1.2-VisionXG, which consists of a computer module (transmitter) and user module (receiver), extends computer signals via fiber optics at distances of up to 10,000m. The fiber optic transmission offers sufficient bandwidth for delivering uncompressed 4K and 8K videos at 60Hz, as well as keyboard/mouse, RS232, USB2.0 and audio signals.

The KVM extender DP1.2-Vision includes screen-freeze, monitoring, redundant power supplies, SNMP and two network ports. And it integrates with G&D matrix systems, such as the ControlCenter-Compact or ControlCenter-Digital, which allow the extension and switching of 4K at 60 Hz through the matrix.

G&D will also show the DP-Vision-IP, its new KVM extender for unlimited access over IP. It supports DisplayPort video resolutions up to 2560x1600 at 60 Hz or 3840x2160 at 30 Hz.

The workflow manager, which is part of the company’s Media Library, is a sophisticated media asset management (MAM) system that runs on Elements media servers or storage appliances. Media Library users can transfer projects seamlessly to editing systems, such as Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere, and Apple Final Cut Pro. It also supports Avid bin locking and project sharing.

Elements’ Rough-Cut Editor, which is also part of the Media Library, offers professional rough-cut editing functionalities. During projects, it streamlines the review and approvals process by allowing for frame-accurate comments and even drawings on the source material to indicate areas of interest.

LAS VEGAS—Apantac is showing the MX-32, its latest affordable, feature-rich video multiviewer, at the 2017 NAB Show. The MX-32 can be used for monitoring incoming feeds in a control room, or displaying and monitoring live multi-camera productions for sports and events, among other applications.

With 32 inputs and four outputs, the MX32 allows users to monitor up to 32 independent video inputs simultaneously—including 3G, HD, and SD-SDI, with four independent outputs. Any input source can be duplicated and resized, and displayed on any of the four outputs. Each output can display a maximum of 32 windows.

The multiviewer also includes a custom on-screen display for layout flexibility to show up to 128 audiometers per output, custom standalone labels, tally indicators, under monitor displays (UMD), over monitor displays (OMD), analog and digital clocks, and count up/down timers. LAS VEGAS—Edgeware will present its business case at the 2017 NAB Show that, under certain circumstances, it may be worthwhile for broadcasters to build their own TV CDNs.

As the popularity of over-the-top (OTT) TV grows, many Edgeware customers have already found that by building their own TV CDN infrastructures, they improve viewing quality, and save money that would otherwise be spent on third-party CDN services.

The business case weighs several metrics, including: the balance between number of regular users and how long they view content, versus the cost of the equipment, software licenses, backhaul capacity, rack-space, power and operational staff.
