Kokusai Denki Electric America will mark the U.S. debut of a new 4K camera at the 2025 NAB New York, Oct. 22-23. Now available, the Z-HD6500-S1 UHD/HD production system—the company’s third 4K model—opens the 4K production universe to a broader customer base as a professional yet cost-efficient option aligned with most budgets.

Introduced at IBC2025 last month, the Z-HD6500-S1 borrows design elements from the company’s Z-HD6500 multiformat HD camera, and has been reinvented as a full-featured native 4K camera. It includes the same 2/3-inch UHD-native sensors as Kokusai Denki’s high-end SK-UHD7000, ensuring uniform image quality across different production environments. Its RGB 3-chip technology, with 8.3 million effective pixels per sensor, resulting in sharp, vibrant images with minimal noise, outstanding color fidelity and remarkable sensitivity.

The Z-HD6500-S1 incorporates native 4K global shutter technology to eliminate artifacts such as banding and flickering, optimizing performance within houses of worship, event centers, and broadcast studios utilizing LED lighting and displays. High sensitivity and a strong signal-to-noise ratio strengthen reliability, ensuring high-quality video capture in low-light conditions as well as ultra-quiet images. The feature set also includes a ¼ inch ND filter for shallow depth shooting, and a low-pass filter to reduce visual patterns or optical illusions known as Moire effects.

At NAB Show New York 2025, Calrec has announced that it will showcase how its interconnected suite of broadcast audio products is reshaping the future of live production.

Calrec said that visitors to its booth during the show, which takes place Oct. 21-23, at the Javits Center in New York City. will experience a live ecosystem featuring the 36-fader Argo M (with integrated DSP), 36-fader Argo S, the versatile Type R mixing system and the powerful ImPulse processing core, all seamlessly controlled via Calrec’s True Control 2.0, the company reported.

Demos in its booth will show how True Control 2.0 is transforming broadcast workflows, driving the shift to fully remote and distributed production. With the power to control any Calrec system from any location, it unlocks access to more cores, more faders, more surfaces, and more flexibility so broadcasters can adapt instantly to changing production demands, the company said.

Unlike basic mirroring or parallel control, True Control 2.0 delivers complete functionality from EQ and dynamics to routing, direct outputs and delay. This enables broadcasters to scale production ecosystems on demand, orchestrating any combination of distributed production workflows and a deep level of remote control. A single controller can manage up to five other consoles or processing cores simultaneously, dramatically increasing flexibility and expanding functionality without the need for additional hardware, the company said.

Available across Argo Q, Argo S, Argo M, Type R, the ImPulse and ImPulse1 cores, and the cloud-based ImPulseV audio mixing solution, True Control 2.0 creates an interconnected ecosystem where any enabled device can control another. With Apollo+ and Artemis+ also joining the platform, broadcasters can achieve new levels of adaptability, efficiency, and creative freedom, the company explained.

At NAB Show New York, Calrec also said that it will showcase the compact 36-fader Argo M, which is also available in a 24 and new 48-fader footprint. Designed to maximize desk space, without sacrificing power, Argo M combines full-sized fader strips with wild controls to handle even the most demanding productions in tight environments. This high-performance plug-and-play control surface offers a full range of ST 2110 and cloud connectivity, allowing broadcasters to focus on creating great content at scale. With up to 356 channels of internal DSP, Argo M features built-in analogue and digital audio I/O and GPIO, 3 x modular I/O expansion slots, and MADI via SFP, the company said.

The ability to connect to an ST 2110 networked environment and to an existing Calrec ImPulse core alongside other Argo surfaces means it can quickly create multi-console IP environments, while connectivity to ImPulse, ImPulse1 and ImPulseV means additional external DSP paths can be easily added as production demands change, Calrec reported.

With seamless ST 2110 integration, touchscreens that can switch between metering and intuitive UI control, and support for immersive formats up to 7.1.4, Argo M addresses the industry’s need for super-compact and portable IP mixing solutions designed to meet the full spectrum of live broadcast production demands, it said.

Calrec is also bringing its award-winning 36-fader Argo S console to NAB Show New York, now powered by a major software update. Designed for the most demanding live broadcast environments, Argo S pairs with an ImPulse DSP core to deliver a modular, IP-native audio console available in two height variants. With enough customizable hands-on real estate to deliver control over every parameter of the audio mix, Argo S gives broadcasters everything they need to adapt without compromising resilience or precision.

The new v1.4 Argo software unlocks even more flexibility. An enhanced routing strip functionality allows users to see every fader’s routing simultaneously on the touchscreen. It also enables users to switch rows of physical controls to other strip modes such as EQ, Dyn or Pan, and enables Argo Q to support two sets of custom wild panels per section. A new Tiles feature allows users to customize their up-stand meter layouts to add thumbnails, and Argo now supports a streamlined new workflow for Mix Minus that allows users to select any bus to send to a channel’s mix minus output rather than just the auto-minus. It also adds the ability to select a different output when fader closed to when it’s open and allows users to “interrogate” the console to access routing information of buses being used for a path’s main output.

The update also supports DAW control of MIDI on the Argo platform and makes improvements to NMOS Control, status updates and monitoring, and interfacing with Calrec Connect.

In addition, Calrec will showcase its Type R modular, expandable IP mixing system, controlled by True Control 2.0. It too is designed to encourage customers to take advantage of distributed production and flexible workflows. Type R’s fully 5.1 capable IP core enables broadcasters to benefit from virtual working practices and automated broadcast workflows on a cost-effective SMPTE 2110-compliant IP backbone.

Calrec said that Type R now provides the following key features: off air record, enhanced GPIO talkback, monitor selector follow, mix minus bus user labels and a large DSP pack with 32 aux buses.

NEWARK, N.J.—Panasonic Connect has announced the new AK-UCX100 4K studio camera and two new 4K multi-purpose cameras. In addition, the company said it will extend NDI support to its lineup of 4K integrated cameras including the AW-UE40, AW-UE50, AW-HE145 and AW-UE150 in addition to its Memory Card Camera Recorder, the AG-CX350.

Panasonic Connect said that the AK-UCX100 is designed for live events and gives event professionals the flexibility to capture engaging, high-quality content in these dynamic environments.

Capturing clear, high-quality content in live event environments can pose challenges with shifting lighting conditions and dynamic backgrounds. The AK-UCX100 supports strong image quality right out of the box. The new imager offers high sensitivity and dynamic range, easily adapting to both a darkened auditorium and venues with dazzling lighting effects. Its colorimetry has also been optimized to account for any new challenges with LED lighting and large display walls while the camera's HD low-pass filter helps manage the effect of moiré in LED walls. This allows venues to easily create the same experience for fans whether they are in-person or tuning in from home.

With improved resolution and 4K capabilities, the AK-UCX100 achieves a resolution of 2000 TV lines both horizontally and vertically, capturing detailed, ultra-high-definition images of the subject from any angle. Plus, the wide dynamic range and color gamut of HLG/BT.2020 lets content creators capture colorful, immersive stage performances for the most advanced display technologies.

When producing content in a traditional studio with a CCU, the camera pairs with Panasonic’s recently released AK-UCU700 Series Camera Control Unit, which provides all traditional points of connectivity. The UCX100 can easily pair with any Panasonic camera, including the AK-UE160 PTZ camera, to ensure consistent, cohesive production quality.

The AW-UB50 and AW-UB10, available in early 2025, are compact, box-style cameras equipped with large-format sensors to meet the demands of broadcast and live entertainment with exceptional image quality and expressive detail. With Panasonic’s remote camera system, AW-UB50 and AW-UB10 will be able to remotely facilitate the workflow of video production. These multi-purpose cameras will enable the expansion of high-quality video production into markets such as education and corporate environments.

The Media-Over-IP Pavilion will be an exclusive one-day event held on Oct. 9.

MAHWAH, NJ—Ikegami will promote the latest additions to its product range at NAB Show New York in the Javits Center, Oct. 25-26. 

Exhibit highlights will include the UHK-X600, a broadcast-quality Full-HD studio/EFP camera built to withstand the rigors of OB and EFP as well as studio operation. It can be pedestal or tripod mounted or operated over the shoulder. At the front end are three 2/3-inch oversampling UHD CMOS sensors providing 1000 TVL resolution, minimal aliasing, plus 2000 lux sensitivity at f10 (60p). Standard features include full support for Hybrid Log Gamma HDR with the ability to select between BT.2020 and BT.709 chroma spaces. Global shutter imagers minimize artifacts when televising LED screen walls or flash/strobe-illuminated stage environments.

Also at its booth is the Ikegami UHL-43 4K-upgradeable 3-CMOS Full-HD compact multipurpose HDR WCG camera, a compact box-style camera designed for applications such as robotic studios, live-event broadcasting, parliamentary television and point-of-view image capture. The camera head can be used on practically any support device such as a remote pan & tilt, long-reach arm or overhead mount.

The UHL-43 employs three 2/3-inch UHD CMOS sensors in the same workflow and remote control structure as Ikegami’s Unicam XE series UHK-X600, UHK-X700 and UHK-750 cameras. Unlike cameras using a single chip or pixel-offset technology, the integration of three UHD resolution CMOS sensors and prism optics provides true 2000 TVL capture resolution, high quality color reproduction and complete freedom from color aliasing.

Available as a Full-HD model, the UHL-43 can be upgraded to deliver 4K-UHD. HLG HDR is supported as standard in HD and UHD. 

Ikegami will also showcase the HQLM-3120W, a 31-inch 4K/Full-HD HDR WCG master reference monitor, designed for use as a full 4K master reference monitor in television production studios, postproduction suites, master control rooms and playout centers. It employs an LED-illuminated 31.1 inch pixel LCD panel with full 4096 x 2160 resolution. This has a wide viewing angle allowing critical content evaluation within up to 178 degrees horizontal and vertical. Other performance parameters include high contrast ratio (1500:1 typical) and a wide chroma gamut, meeting the ITU-R BT.2020 standard specified for broadcast quality program production and international distribution.

A 4K signal source can be connected to the HQLM-3120W via four 3G-SDI inputs (square division or two-sample interleave). Also provided are 12G-SDI 4K inputs plus a 3G/HD-SDI input and an HDMI input. In addition to its picture monitoring capabilities, the HQLM-3120W is equipped to operate as a waveform monitor and vectorscope. It can also display vertical-interval timecode, eight channel SDI-embedded audio level and closed-caption subtitles. Audio output is available through the monitor’s internal stereo speakers, stereo headphone jack and stereo line out.

TVU Channel doesn’t operate on customary infrastructure, but instead enables the user to schedule live and VOD programming from a browser. The cloud-based TVU Channel can be deployed in minutes to schedule and manage one or hundreds of live content channels including OTT, websites, apps and social media. NEW YORK—NAB says 9,576 attendees visited NAB Show New York, held at the Javits Center Oct. 19-20. This years event marks the first time the show was held in person since 2019. The show floor featured 245 exhibitors showcasing the latest technology in media and entertainment. The 2023 NAB Show New York will be held Oct. 25-26, 2023.

AES, which was held in conjunction with NAB Show New York, reported that nearly 7,000 attended its show, which featured 100 exhibitors, Combined, the two shows attracted approximately 16,500 attendees and hosted 350 exhibitors. 

“The turnout for NAB Show New York reinforces the power of our brand and the value of in-person trade shows,” said NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt. “We are incredibly thankful to our exhibitors, speakers, partners and attendees for making this event a success, and we are excited to build on the momentum leading into NAB Show in Las Vegas.”

NEW YORK—Zero Density will be at NAB Show New York to showcase their latest technologies, including Reality Engine, a real-time broadcast compositing system that the company says enables “real-time visual effects pipelines featuring video I/O, keying, compositing and rendering in one single machine.

Reality Engine uses NVidia Quadro GPUDirect technology for high-performance video I/O in order to streamline real-time 4K UltraHD workflows. It uses Unreal Engine by Epic Games, as the 3D renderer.

Reality Engine supports industry-standard mechanical and optical camera tracking systems and can use the lens calibration data sent by the tracking devices. When the talent tracking data is acquired by Reality Engine, the engine positions the talent inside the virtual world in the correct position and depth. This technology automatically enables the creation of reflections and refractions of the talent.

The BG-Commander is armed with variable PTZ speed control for tailoring the pan, tilt and zoom motor movements. The push-button preset function enables users to switch between static shots, eliminating redundant joystick movements.

Parameters can be adjusted quickly from the BG-Commander’s setup menu via the on-screen display. Users can control PTZ cameras from long distances by implementing any of the four control modes—two IP modes (IP VISCA and ONVIF) and two analog modes (RS422 and RS232).

NEW YORK—At NAB Show New York, Magewell will launch a new model in its Ultra Encode family of live media encoders. The Ultra Encode AIO builds on the the company’s original Ultra Encode models with expanded features including HDMI and SDI input connectivity in a single unit; 4K encoding and streaming from the HDMI input; simultaneous multi-protocol streaming; higher streaming bitrates; and file recording. 

Ultra Encode AIO supports multiple video encoding formats and an array of delivery protocols including RTMP, RTMPS, SRT, RTSP, RTP, HLS, and TVU’s ISSP technology. Video can be encoded at resolutions up to 4096x2160 at 30 frames per second from HDMI sources, or up to 1080p HD at 60 fps from the device’s 3G-SDI input. 

The single-channel Ultra Encode AIO can encode one live input source—either HDMI or SDI—or mix video from the HDMI and SDI inputs (picture-in-picture or side-by-side) into a combined output. Video can be encoded at bitrates up to 32 Mbps, while up to eight channels of audio can be encoded in AAC format. Two concurrent encoding profiles with distinct combinations of resolution, frame rate, and bitrate can be specified, and up to eight user-configurable overlays—including text, images, and a clock—can be applied to each profile. 

Configurable presets enable easy streaming to YouTube Live, Facebook Live, Twitch, or custom targets. Ultra Encode AIO can stream to up to six different target destinations simultaneously, including the ability to stream concurrently in multiple protocols. Inputs can also be recorded as files to an SD card, USB-connected storage device, or networked storage (NFS, CIFS or SMB).

For IP production workflows and AV-over-IP signal distribution architectures, Ultra Encode AIO supports NDI|HX 3, the latest version of the high-efficiency, low-bandwidth option in the popular NDI IP media transport technology platform. NDI|HX 3 improves video quality while enabling very low latency. Ultra Encode AIO also supports the earlier NDI|HX 2 for broad compatibility. 

Ultra Encode AIO can be configured, monitored, and controlled through its browser-based web interface—accessible through any computer or mobile device, with an optimized layout for smartphones—with centralized management of multiple units available through the Magewell Cloud software. In addition to manual control, scheduled streaming and recording are also available through the web UI, while the unit’s touchscreen LCD screen provides status information and snapshot previews. HTTP-based APIs are also available for systems integrators and third-party developers to incorporate Ultra Encode AIO into their solutions. 

Ultra Encode AIO devices measure 214.9mm (8.46 inches) by 128.2mm (5.05 inches) with a height of 44.55mm (1.75 inches). Pairs of units can be rack-mounted together with included mounting hardware. The device can be powered via PoE (Power over Ethernet) or the included power adapter. In addition to HDMI and SDI video input and loop-through connections with embedded audio support, Ultra Encode AIO also offers line-level analog audio input and output. For network connectivity, the encoder features built-in Wi-Fi and an RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet port, as well as support for optional, third-party 3G/4G broadband modems.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.—TVU Networks will showcase its 5G remote production and cloud-based playout solutions as well as new device integration at the 2022 NAB Show New York,  Oct. 17-20 at the Javits Center in New York City. 

Guided by insight from news and sports media companies, TVU Networks releases new products, features and upgrades throughout the year to enable a seamless experience for users of its live multi-camera production-over-IP solutions, the company said.

The components of the TVU cloud-based ecosystem work together seamlessly even in the most challenging network environments. Using 5G cellular networks, TVU’s end-to-end solution provides greater bandwidth and resiliency, ultra-low latency and connectivity with speeds up to 100 times faster than 4G, it said.

The latest addition to the TVU production solution is TVU RPS (Remote Production System) Link Encoder. It allows multi-channel REMI production over 5G. The TVU RPS Link Encoder is compatible with the existing TVU RPS hardware decoder and TVU’s cloud ecosystem.

The TVU RPS remote production system uses an encoder and decoder to synchronize multiple remote sources perfectly and send them to the studio, while the TVU Producer platform enables production of live streaming programs from any of these sources without a studio infrastructure, it said.

The new TVU Channel Plus, a cloud-based playout service with integrated ad sales support, follows its predecessor TVU Channel. Initially designed for one of the world’s largest broadcasters, TVU Channel, enables the user to schedule live and VOD programming from a simple web browser. Both TVU Channel Plus and TVU Channel enable simple, yet powerful linear channel scheduling and playout running in the cloud, TVU Networks said.

With pay-as-you-go pricing, the TVU Channel supports an OpEx business model. TVU Channel Plus is free to the user, employing a revenue-split pricing model based on ad performance.

Another new module TVU will highlight at NAB New York is TVU Replay, a multi-camera control sports app. TVU Replay gives officials instant review capability during games. Video producers also can include TVU Replay clips within their coverage, it said.

The app has two modes: Review and Replay. The Review mode enables officials and coaches in game to review any close call immediately from their phone or tablet. Running within the TVU Producer live production platform, Replay provides all production elements necessary to output clips to any device, the company said.

“We’re regularly adding essential tools into the TVU ecosystem that save producers time and increase flexibility with more options for live event production,” said TVU Networks Paul Shen. “Our ecosystem of 5G, 4K solutions integrate in a microservices-based, building block approach that makes it easy to add capabilities as needed.”

In keeping with that commitment to innovation, TVU will demonstrate an integration with Stream Deck from Elgato. Stream Deck is a physical control interface device popular with gamers streaming on Twitch and YouTube, the company said. 

Using Stream Deck to control live production from the TVU Producer multi-camera, streaming platform makes seamless production easy for a new generation of content creators. Shortcut keys can be mapped for transitions, clips, overlays and ad insertions from TVU Producer onto the Stream Deck device for simple, one button control, it said.

The SOAR-A IPTV IP distribution service is an ultra-low latency, web distribution service that provides streaming from one location via WebRTC to any number of remote browsers or set top boxes. It requires a single SOAR-A device at the main location with set top boxes or PCs at remote locations for display. Viewers can watch the video on standard computers, tablets and smart phones. Cameras can also be monitored via a low-latency preview on the web browser without any custom software. It also enables 24/7 recording, FOR-A said.

The SOAR-A Play media server can be used as an IP-optimized multi-channel playout system, available in either two- or four-channel configurations. It offers a web interface to allow control from any device without prior installation and is well-suited for collaborative work among multiple users and groups, allowing concurrent operation, it said.

The SOAR-A Graphics solution supports SMPTE ST 2110 and NDI. The solution forms an ideal complement to FOR-A switchers. Its CG Edit Suite provides graphics creation, and the system’s LiveBoard handles graphics playout.

TV Tech: What are you most looking forward to at NAB Show New York?

RAFAEL FONSECA: NAB Show New York is my favorite show. The quality of the visitors is parallel to none. I am looking forward to reconnecting with the industry, especially with the folks who normally attend NAB Show New York but don’t attend NAB Show in Las Vegas. We want to, as with every New York show, get a sense of where the industry is in terms of trends in technology like compression is, usage of cloud services, status of the migration to media over IP, and needs that we can supply.

NEW YORK—During NAB Show NY, Oct. 19-20 at the Javits Center in New York, Black Box will spotlight new products for its KVM over IP platform. . 

The recently announced Black Box Emerald GE leverages PC-over-IP (PCoIP) Ultra technology to enable multiple users to connect simultaneously and control a virtual machine (VM) just as they would a physical system. With extremely low bandwidth requirements, the system supports remote access through both local and wide area networks (LANs and WANs). 

Pairing seamlessly with the Emerald KVM-over-IP platform, Emerald GE supports VM sharing while ensuring a secure, high-definition and highly responsive computing experience. Unlocking collaboration across physical machines and VMs, Emerald GE empowers broadcasters to work together more efficiently in remote production scenarios.

Also shown will be the Emerald VUE 4K multiviewer, which unites KVM switching with quad multiviewing to enable simultaneous monitoring of four DisplayPort video sources across two screens at exceptional 4K60 image quality. The system is ideal for production environments where space is limited, as it allows users to arrange windows freely on the screen or in preconfigured screen layouts such as full-screen, quad-view or picture-in-picture (PiP). Real-time switching between sources via keyboard, API or GPIO — or with the Black Box Glide & Switch capability — gives producers, engineers and editors convenient control over the production process.

Black Box will also spotlight its Emerald KVM-over-IP platform, which serves as an infinitely scalable universal access system, giving users the flexibility to connect to both physical and virtual machines from any location at any time, which allows for optimized studio infrastructure and workflows. Advanced security and market-leading low-bandwidth consumption allow maximum expandability, incorporating remote users, remote productions and distributed control rooms.

NEW YORK—At the 2022 NAB Show New York, Oct. 19-20 at the Javits Center, Artel will feature products that simplify broadcasters' shift to hybrid IP/SDI and all-IP operations. Artel's SMART Media Delivery Platform is a software-defined, four-channel, auto-sensing 12G/3G/HD/SD-SDI-over-IP multifunction gateway with integrated nonblocking Layer 2/3 switching and routing capabilities. It is available in DigiLink/InfinityLink and openGear® configurations. The software-enabled solution features four video ports for transporting video, audio, and ancillary data and four GigE data ports bridged to one or two 10G interfaces. Designed to attach seamlessly to the IP network without external network elements, the SMART platform supports SMPTE ST 2022-1, 2, 5, 6, and 7 (hitless switching); J2K compression; QoS; VLAN tagging; and traffic management.

The openGear version, SMART OG, is the first to bring the family of JPEG compression engines—including those specified in VSF TR-01, TR-07, and TR-08—onto the openGear platform. With SMART OG, users can deploy hardware once and easily change the gateway function via a software update. 

SMART OG is initially configured for a specific function, but it may be adapted thereafter for a growing array of functions, such as reformatting or encoding per JPEG2000, JPEG-XS, SMPTE ST 2110, SMPTE ST 2022-1/2/5/6/7, H.265, IEEE 1588, or other functions yet to be specified. The gateway provides four BNCs for SDI or ASI input/output and two 10GbE SFPs for trunking and aggregation.

Throughout the show, Artel will offer live demos highlighting the SMART platform's JPEG-XS support and flexibility. Attendees will see how they can enable different functionality on the hardware by selecting different icons in the software. One SMART implementation will be shown running J2K compressed video and another (the SMART OG) running JPEG-XS compressed video so people can compare the two streams.

TV Tech caught up with Vislink CEO Mickey Miller to talk about the company’s participation in the upcoming NAB Show New York. Attendees can see Vislink demonstrations in booth 1219.

Blackmagic Design will feature four new models of its Ultimatte 12 real-time compositing processors that are designed at a lower cost while retaining the company’s standard of processing for edge handling, greater color separation, color fidelity and better spill suppression.

There are four new models, beginning with Ultimatte 12 HD, Ultimatte 12 4K and Ultimatte 12 8K model. This allows users to get an Ultimatte 12 for the television standard they are using. The fourth model is a lower-cost Ultimatte 12 HD Mini model with HDMI connections priced at only US$495. Ultimatte 12 HD Mini was designed to let ATEM Mini customers get the benefits of broadcast-quality keying to build fixed camera virtual sets.

All models of Ultimatte 12 include built-in frame stores so users can key using stills for backgrounds, eliminating the cost of external equipment. This means all compositing can be done in the Ultimatte itself.

The company says all Ultimatte 12 models, including the Ultimatte 12 HD Mini, have the same advanced image processing algorithms and a huge internal color space. This means all models produce identical quality compositions. The processing automatically generates internal mattes so different parts of the image are processed separately based on the colors in each area. This means customers get fine edge detail where it’s needed, and smoother transitions between colors or other objects in the scene. Everything is handled by new math and sub pixel processing that’s designed for quality and clarity.

The company is also showing a new Ultimatte Software Control app for Mac and Windows that’s available for download free of charge. This software lets the user control all Ultimatte 12 models without the additional cost of a hardware control panel.

WASHINGTON—Award-winning media and entertainment entrepreneur, radio personality, television host and producer Ryan Seacrest will receive the 2022 National Association of Broadcasters’ Distinguished Service Award (NAB DSA), the organization’s highest honor, which recognizes those who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the American system of broadcasting. The award presentation will take place during the Marconi Radio Awards dinner on October 19 at NAB Show New York.

In addition to Seacrest’s successful career in radio and television broadcasting, the honor will recognize his work as the Chairman and Founder of the Ryan Seacrest Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring today's youth through entertainment and education focused initiatives.

As the host and producer of the #1 Los Angeles morning drive-time show for iHeartMedia’s 102.7 KIIS-FM, the nationally syndicated “On Air with Ryan Seacrest” and “American Top 40 with Ryan Seacrest,” Seacrest has become one of the most recognized and trusted voices in media today.

Additionally, Seacrest has been a television fixture for over two decades on programs including ABC’s “American Idol” and “LIVE with Kelly and Ryan” - for which he won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host. Also, Seacrest hosts the annual live broadcast of “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest.”

Over the past 12 years, Seacrest has dedicated his time to a cause that is important to him through The Ryan Seacrest Foundation (RSF). After visiting various children’s hospitals and speaking with patients and families, Seacrest built Seacrest Studios committed to providing entertainment for children in the hospital and those receiving medical care. RSF’s aim is to contribute positively to the healing process for children and their families during their stay, by allowing children to experiment with radio and television broadcasting in these media centers, to bring an uplifting spirit to the hospital community. Today, the Ryan Seacrest Foundation, for which he serves as chairman, has successfully installed 11 broadcast media centers in pediatric hospitals nationwide and will open its newest studio at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in Queens, NY in 2023, with additional new studios to be announced later this year.

Murrow, Bob Hope, Walter Cronkite and Oprah Winfrey.

NEW YORK—The virtual NAB New York Show took a “deep dive” on ATSC 3.0 on Oct. 26 with a look at where the standard stands today from the broadcast and consumer points of view, its promise, the challenges ahead, new technology developments, deployments and international considerations.

Eight sessions in all, including an introductory keynote by Madeleine Noland, president of the Advanced Television Systems Committee, and a view from the FCC presented by Commissioner Brendan Carr, delivered a well-rounded view of the state of ATSC 3.0.

A VIEW FROM THE TOP

The morning began with Noland laying out the fundamentals of the ATSC 3.0 and some of its most important features as well as some of the ATSC’s ongoing planning during her opening remarks at the event.

“One of the key requirements of ATSC 3.0 is that the system must be able to evolve in a backward compatible way,” said Noland, noting the standard also has room for near- and longer-term innovation and is able to evolve because of the extensible technologies at its foundation.

Among those technologies are the ATSC 3.0 bootstrap and the physical layer pipes. “…[W]e can continually develop ATSC 3.0 without impacting existing audiences,” she said. “This is a key piece of the architecture, which allows ATSC 3.0 to be a platform.”

The bootstrap allows new frames to be added into the mix to enable future services while instructing legacy 3.0 receivers when to expect the next frame they can recognize, she said. In that way, it will be possible to “interleave the next NextGen frames with ATSC 3.0,” Noland said.

The ATSC president also explained some of the organizational structure of the group that will ready 3.0 for new uses and markets. For example, she noted, Planning Team Eight is investigating and preparing recommendations about a Core Broadcast Network to support ATSC 3.0.

BROADCAST CORE NETWORK

An entire panel at the event examined the topic of a Core Network for broadcasting, including what it is, its relevance is to 3.0, a comparison to the cellular core network, its potential to enable a 3.0 downlink with an LTE-5G uplink and device authentication. An In-Band Distribution link (IDL) and Inter-Tower Communications (ITC) were also discussed as part of the Broadcast Core Network.

Mohamed Aziz Taga, product manager, Rohde & Schwarz, described what a core network is in the context of a cellular network. A core network is the single anchoring point that controls all of the elements—mostly base stations—in the radio access network, he said.

“It is considered as the fundamental cornerstone of the mobile network’s architecture,” said Taga, adding that the core network also manages policy and charges as it relates to billing as well as sessions when a customer is using the network.

Noland explained the role an ATSC 3.0 broadcast core network would play in enabling nationwide IP delivery. “…U.S. broadcast towers each operate within one of 210 market areas,” she said. “So we could say that we actually don’t have a nationwide wireless IP network. Actually, we have 210 individual ones.”

The broadcast core network would coordinate data transmission among the various towers to create a regional or nationwide IP wireless network. Broadcasters could then work together to create one or more coalitions that create these networks, she said.

John Montalban, assistant professor at the University of the Basque Country, discussed how ATSC 3.0, as an IP-based standard, overcomes the impediments historically faced when considering the convergence of cellular and broadcast networks. “I think now we have a huge opportunity with ATSC [3] because… [it is] kind of easy on core points to interconnect both broadcast and cellular services,” he said.

Growing out of this convergence will be a variety of new services broadcasters can support, including offloading live video of sports and entertainment programming with large audiences, he said.

This convergence networks will also require consumer identification and authentication, said Paul Burke, solution architect, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise.

“If we look at… the role of identity and user authentication in [an] ATSC 3.0 deployment…, we’re looking at causing this identity to be federated between… the multiple worlds [where]… the consumer might exist,” said Burke.

A federated identity between the cellular and broadcast worlds will facilitate access to location services, access to premium content and services and even personalized advertising, he said.

Broadcasters should stress the benefits of service offerings to consumers as a way of overcoming possible objections related to privacy concerns, said Burke.

Yiyan Wu, principal research scientist, Communications Research Center Canada (CRC), discussed an IDL and ITC as part of the core broadcast network to distribute broadcast content to broadcast transmission sites, whether they are part of a single frequency network or not.

The benefit of IDL is to reduce operating costs. Relying on layered division multiplexing (LDM), part of the ATSC 3.0 standard, IDL uses part of the broadcast spectrum for one-way distribution of programming to transmitter sites. In practice, a broadcast tower site will transmit a TV program while simultaneously receiving program data to be transmitted in the future on the same frequency, said Wu.

ITC is similar, but uses a two-way in-band distribution link to create an IP network that can be used for datacasting and network control, he said. It also enables different SFN towers to emit different content.

READY AT RETAIL

Representatives from LG Electronics, Samsung, Sony Electronics and Dolby Laboratories addressed the consumer side of the 3.0 equation during the “NextGen TV Is Ready at Retail” session.

Samsung has met its commitment to bring NextGen TV to market, offering support for it in 10 new models of 8K televisions introduced at CES 2020. However, the company hasn’t trumpeted its availability, said Jon Fairhurst, principal standards engineer, Samsung Research America.

“[W]e didn’t say much about it at the time, because new branding is hard,” he said. “So, even if it’s something as simple as ‘Here’s a brand; it makes better pictures,’ it costs a lot of money [and] takes a lot of time and energy to promote it. And something as sweeping as ATSC 3.0 or NextGen TV is an order of magnitude harder.”

Samsung is waiting for the industry to come together and pool its resources so that consumers will begin to ask for NextGen TV, said Fairhurst, adding that the company included 3.0 in its 8K televisions because those are targeted at consumers who “want it all.”

Nick Colsey, vice president, Business Development at Sony Electronics, sees the present time as “a great time” for the NextGen TV launch, which the company also announced at CES 2020.

“People are spending more time at home watching more content, and many people are looking at their TV and thinking well it’s about time I got a bigger and better TV,” he said.

Colsey noted that NextGen TV is “right close” to the entry level in the Sony television lineup, starting at just under $1,000. “We are really trying to seed the market with as many TVs as possible as the station rollout continues,” he said.

Like Sony and Samsung, LG Electronics launched its NextGen TV models at CES 2020 with six premium OLED 4K and 8K models with dual ATSC 3.0 and 1.0 receiver chips, said John Taylor, the company’s senior vice president of Public Affairs & Communications.

“I share Jon Fairhurst’s view that [CES] was a little early yet,” said Taylor. “There weren’t a lot of stations on the air, [and] we’re still in the education mode with retailers.”

PLUS: CES to Mark Debut of ATSC 3.0 Consumer Products

Like Samsung, LG began shipping its NextGen TVs in March, as the severity of the COVID-19 outbreak became clear. “There were concerns early on that there would be supply chain constraints because of the early phases of the pandemic, but thankfully—knock on wood—we avoided major delays and got product out,” said Taylor.

He added that these are still early days because there aren’t a lot of stations on the air with 3.0 service, but “as all the pieces of the eco[system] come together, you’re going to see a lot more promotion and a lot more activity at the retail level.”

Oren Williams, director, Commercial Partners & Standards at Dolby Laboratories, pointed out that his company works closely with Sony, Samsung and LG on 3.0 consumer sets to “maximize the benefit of the Dolby audio technology [AC4] and video technology that’s part of NextGen TV.”

CARR KEYNOTE

FCC Commissioner Carr delivered a keynote speech during the event in which he emphasized the important role broadcasters choosing to deploy ATSC 3.0 will play in the next generation of wireless services while at the same time continuing to offer their traditional over-the-air television service. “I [have] suggested that we should think about this technology as a new competitive broadband,” said Carr.

With 3.0, broadcasters can cover their markets and deliver a 25Mb/s data stream to Americans, said Carr. “I’ve come to refer to these set of applications as broadcast internet services, which is a term that I think captures even more of the innovative applications that are on the horizon.”

ATSC 3.0 can enable broadcasters to compete from a position of strength as hybrid networks find “the most efficient and cost-effective ways to deliver content to users,” said Carr.

Carr recounted steps the FCC has taken or currently is taking to address possible obstacles to 3.0 deployment, ranging from technical and licensing issues to an ongoing proceeding to expand the use of single frequency network and the recently initiated proceeding on broadcast internet, including a declaratory ruling to ensure “broadcast internet services are not weighted down by legacy media regulations.”

The ruling clarified that broadcast ownership rules do not apply to leases between broadcasters and third parties as it relates to provisioning broadcast internet services, he said.

“Broadcasters, innovators, tech companies [and] investors are now on notice that they can generate the scale and the geographic footprint, both locally and nationally, that may be necessary to support broadcast internet services,” Carr said.

WASHINGTON—NextGen TV will get its time in the spotlight at this year’s virtual NAB Show New York, with the annual Next Gen Broadcast Conference planning to mark the progress of ATSC 3.0 deployment and new technology, as well as feature a keynote from FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr.

The one-day conference will feature 25 industry experts taking part in virtual panels that address ATSC 3.0 retail readiness for consumer receivers, the expansion of ATSC 3.0 into core network technologies, collaboration efforts of next-gen broadcasting, how U.S. cable operators are readying for NextGen TV and what steps broadcasters are taking as ATSC 3.0 rolls out to three-quarters of U.S. households by the end of 2021, according to ATSC President Madeleine Noland.

FCC’s Carr is expected to give his keynote on the potential for ATSC 3.0 to transform local TV broadcasting. Carr, who ATSC says termed the phrase “broadcast internet services,” will provide an update on the future of the broadcast spectrum and the role of the FCC in the voluntary transition to ATSC 3.0 broadcasting.

Another special session included in the conference lineup will discuss the potential for integration of ATSC 3.0 in India. Noland will moderate the session with Shashi Shekhart Vempati, CEO of Prasar Bharati, and Pamela Kumar, director general at TSDSI, and how ATSC 3.0 can be interoperable with 5G or 6G networks, something that India is helping lead the way on.

WASHINGTON—While the broadcast industry has been beset by challenges in 2020 from the COVID-19 pandemic, NAB’s President and CEO Gordon Smith believes there can be a silver lining: the re-examination and re-invention of broadcast.

In his opening remarks for NAB Show New York, taking place virtually this week, Smith praised the work of broadcasters—who he described as visionaries and disruptors pushing the industry forward—not only in their efforts to provide vital information to viewers during these times, but their work toward improving their services for the future.

“The challenges of 2020 have created opportunities to re-examine our business models … and integrate different tools and technologies so that we can create new ways to continue to thrive,” Smith said. “This is happening all across the media and entertainment landscape, but on the broadcast side, NAB and its members have been more focused than ever on investing in innovations to ensure that broadcast signals are available on every device today and in the future so that we can always be there for our communities when they need us most.”

Smith also praised the work of local broadcasters in keeping their communities informed and connected in situations that have included the pandemic, wildfires, hurricanes and social justice movements. “[W]e are exercising our First Amendment rights of freedom of speech and of the press to keep the public informed and shine light on the issues that our nation and communities face.”

Some direct examples of this are part of the NAB Show New York program, which Smith highlighted in his remarks, including a panel on Oct. 21 looking at 2020 election campaign coverage by local broadcasters and recognizing Meredith Vieira with the NAB Show New York Impact Award.

NEW YORK—As consumers continue to spend more time with digital devices, advertisers are increasingly leveraging numerous delivery systems.

Whether it's pinpointing localized searches on Google or creating brand recognition, advertisers are taking advantage of new advertising opportunities available through digital technology platforms.

NAB Show New York has organized two days of sessions to help piece together the myriad ways advertisers can reach out to customers, including addressable television and making optimal use of data.

Wednesday's session on the Content FWD Stage, “How Advanced Advertising Will Grow TV and Unite It With Digital Video” examines individualized television advertising, known as addressable TV. Advertisers are looking to unleash the potential power of internet advertising with the same outcome they obtain through a TV ad.

“It's household-level targeting that can now get you national scale,” said Jay Prasad, chief strategy officer for VideoAmp and a panelist. “It's an important tactic for several categories such as automotive (dealers) and regional services providers (healthcare, business services).”

The panel will look into planning, buying and media monetization across screens, and how it ties into concerns of broadcasters, advertisers and technology providers. Panelists will include Bill Wise of Mediaocean and Jonathan Steuer of Omnicom Media Group.

“The advertising business is at a crossroads. It needs to create a much more efficient market structure around data, and move away from historical asymmetry tactics,” Prasad said. “Revenue will grow when the focus is on business outcomes and pricing models reflect success.”

In another session Wednesday, “TV According to Tubi: Unlocking Hollywood,” Andrea Clarke Hall, who is in charge of business development at Tubi, will share the strategies that enabled the company to put a fresh twist on the traditional TV commercial experience.

During Thursday's panel session “Hybrid Studios and the Digital Age” on the Content FWD Stage, attendees will hear from those who create work for multiple screens and audiences on how they built their teams, monetize content and ensure that creativity remains at the core of their work.

Panel members include Chloe Gingrich of The New York Times, Kevin Robinson of Juniper Jones, and Eric Korsh of Mashable Studios.

Tom Westerlin, creative director of VR/AR/360 for Nice Shoes, created Sapporo's Mio Garden, a virtual reality experience based on the popular Japanese beer and the creation of a zen garden. In Thursday's session on the Create FWD Stage, “Step Into Your Brand: Brand Experiences in VR,” Westerlin plans to transport attendees into the garden, resplendent with Japanese pagodas and peaceful, beautiful scenes and sounds, to discuss how to integrate the right experience with the right brand.

“These days, it's not just a logo or a product; it's a lifestyle; it's an image; it's a world; just like products and brands have their own story,” Westerlin said.

In the augemented reality/virtual reality world, the viewer is not passively sitting on a couch watching a commerical on a 2D flatscreen, Westerlin said. Instead, the viewer is actively stepping into what feels like a different world and participating in the action.

“You can manipulate things or actually be a part of a story within that brand they are creating,” Westerlin said. This feeling of being “really there” takes as little as 30 seconds to one minute to form—and once the user crosses that threshold, a memory is formed.

He said this association with branding a memory to a product is in the infancy stages in terms of calculating anayltics and ad dollars. Once buzz is created around the brand, it's easier to tie everything back to a product, he said.

“There are different ways to see how it actually returns a brand to viewer recognition,” Westerlin said. “I think that's where we're at right now. We're just giving the user more brand recognition.”

NEW YORK—New this year to NAB Show New York is “Best of BEIT,” a track of sessions that will highlight some of the sessions presented at the spring NAB Show during the Broadcast Engineering and Information Technology Conference.

“'Best of BEIT' will provide in-depth explanations and examples of how traditional broadcast engineering functions continue to merge with information technology,” said NAB Chief Technology Officer Sam Matheny. “We look forward to providing an additional platform to showcase the world-class research presented at the NAB Show BEIT Conference.”

Kicking off the “Best of BEIT” track will be a number of discussions in “BEIT Engage!” roundtables. There will be six tables, each focusing on a different topic: “Implementing Practical IP Playout Systems” with Andy Warman of Harmonic; “Voice Activated Media” with Pat Higbie of XAPPmedia Inc.; “Audio Loudness Management for OTT and Video Services” with NBCUniversal's Jim Starzynski; “Drones for Broadcast” with Lisa Ellman and Matthew Clark from Hogan Lowells US LLC; “Immersive Media” with Caitlin Burns of Caitlin Burns & Associates; and “Podcasting” with iHeartMedia's Chris Peterson.

The roundtables will take place simultaneously from 12:15-1 p.m. on Oct. 18.

A session on IoT security will focus on how data can be stored, delivered and managed securely.

The traditional sessions will begin later that afteroon, with an update on the status of Next Gen TV. “Next Gen TV—The ATSC 3.0 Standard” will be led by Dr. Richard Chernock, chief science officer at Triveni Digital and chairman of ATSC's 3.0 standard development committee. he will offer attendees a look at what has been achieved so far, and what new opportunities are available to broadcasters to engage their viewers.

“It's really about the technology, but rather than talk about bits and bytes and plumbing, I'm going to step through the layers of the system and do it in terms of what kinds of new capabilities and functionalities broadcasters are going to have at hand by using ATSC 3.0,” said Chernock. “It's important to come and listen to it, learn what the possibilities are and start thinking about what kinds of services can be provided and how to get into the game.”

Another session on Next Gen TV will be presented Oct. 19 by Gerard Faria, TeamCast CSO and co-founder. In his sessions, “Next Gen TV—The ATSC 3.0 Physical Layer Explained,” Faria will cover the fundamentals of COFDM, the modulation scheme rooting the ATSC 3.0's physical layer.

The session “Ultra HD” will be presented by Madeline Noland, a consultant for LG Electronics and chair of the Ultra HD Forum's Guidelines Work Group. Noland will describe Ultra HD in the new Next Gen TV standard and offer perspectives on Ultra HD in today's deployments from the Ultra HD Forum.

“I'm trying to help the over-the-air broadcasters understand that this is real; it's here; it's today; and it's doable; and that there are even more interesting things coming down the pike as we wrap our arms around what we have,” Noland said.

Two other sessions are also planned for the “Best of BEIT” track. The session “IoT Killed the Video Star” will features Akamai Technology's Dave Lewis with a focus on IoT security and how data can be stored, delievered and managed securely.

IBM's Xiaomei Wang will present the session “Personalized Viewer Experience Leveraging Cognitive Media Analytics at Scale,” which offers and account of how a Chinese network operated used cognitive technology.

All “Best of BEIT” sessions will be heldon Tech FWD Stage 1. The “BEIT Engage!” roundtables will take palce at the Focus FWD Keynote Stage.

NEW YORK—Adder Technology will be touting its IP-based KVM technology at this year’s NAB Show New York. The products that will be displayed are designed to support broadcasting infrastructures, streamline workflows, increase ROI and boost productivity for operation using standard network infrastructures.

AdderLink XDIP

Among the products that will be shown is the AdderLink Infinity IP-based KVM extender or matrix. The system is scalable to the user’s needs to support broadcast workflows and allows for a flexible infrastructure. Redundant network operation capabilities provide failover assurance while pixel perfect technology provides high resolutions.

The Adder CCS-Pro8 command and control switch is also expected to be on display. The system enables users to control up to eight different machines across eight, or more, displays using a single mouse or keyboard. It offers support for multiple monitors that combine audio and independently route USB connections.

There is also the AdderLink XDIP digital KVM extender, which is geared toward small and medium-sized applications.

NEW YORK—Cineo Lighting willshowcase theStandard 410 at NAB Show New York, which rounds out the range of Cineo fixtures that provide high-quality, easily controllable light. The S410 sets a new standard for motion picture, television and episodic lighting within an under-27-pounds compact design.

With a 1x2-foot diffused illuminating surface, this new fixture is suitable for lighting talent, sets and creating saturated color effects. The S410 harnesses Cineo’s phosphor-based, tunable white light in combination with a full-gamut RGB lighting system to provide different lighting options. The four-channel interface provides control locally, using the system’s graphical control panel, through traditional wired DMX or with the Integrated LumenRadio CRMX bidirectional wireless DMX/RDM control.

Other features include photo-accurate dimming, variable CCT from 2700K to 6500K, and an RGB/CMY color system that provides variable saturation without degradation of the white light quality. The S410 features flick-free operation and a passive cooling system to ensure noise will not disrupt a shoot. The Cineo S410 will be available to customers beginning Q4 2017.

NEW YORK—At NAB Show New York, IHSE USA will introduce the Draco ultra 492 Series of Cat-X and fiber extenders for DVI-D, USB, audio and RS-232. The 492 series, which includes dual-head and dual-link models, uses the Lightweight Image (Lici) codec, developed in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits. This coding technology enables image quality at the highest video resolutions with color accuracy.

The dual-head model, the Draco ultra Dual-Head KVM extender, makes it possible to connect two DVI monitors over a single Cat-X or fiber cable. When used in conjunction with KVM matrix systems, the Draco ultra Dual-Head KVM extender saves matrix ports. Its sister product, the Draco ultra Dual-Link KVM extender, allows users to transmit DVI signals to a single monitor up to 4K resolution. Extension of signals requires a single data cable.

The 492 Series extenders are compatible with regular single-head/single-link extenders so that consoles can access single-head/single-link CPU units instantaneously. In this situation, signals from single-head/single-link sources are embedded within the dual-link signal format and can be switched with no discernible switching delay.

NEW YORK—At NAB Show New York, Interra Systems will showcase new additions to BATON, its quality control solutions family. BATON is a unified hybrid QC platform, which implements organizational QC policy to support a combination of automated and manual QC checks.

The latest version of BATON includes support for new codecs and formats including IMF App2 Extended, iTunes Subtitle, CineCanvas Subtitles and Kodak Cineon; and expanded audio language detection support for auto-detection capability for subtitles and closed-caption files with new multi-language checks of audio tracks.

The BATON features HDR quality checks for basic alignment of speech and captions; enhanced loudness detection and correction; support for DRM techniques; and support to register an HTTP/HTTPS location, and QC MPEG-DASH and HLS files.

Interra Systems will also demonstrate its BATON+ QC and analysis solution, which optimizes the QC process by allowing users to define workflows representing the stages through which media content flows in a facility.
