MELBOURNE, Australia—Mediaproxy has named Heartland Video Systems as its exclusive partner for the television business in the United States.

The Plymouth, Wisc., -based systems integrator will represent the company’s full range of technologies, including LogServer and Monwall as well as offer them as part of its installation portfolio.

MELBOURNE—Mediaproxy will present its latest features for the company’s Monwall multiviewer, including instant replay and HTML content monitoring, and other innovations for remote monitoring workflows and cloud deployment at NAB Show New York, Oct. 22-23, at the Javits Center in New York City.

Monwall’s new instant replay feature enables broadcast operators and engineers to review live incidents instantly without interrupting ongoing monitoring. Operators can rewind mosaic outputs in real time through a web interface or control surface, ensuring fast and precise incident analysis, Mediaproxy said.

Scalable across multiple mosaics and accessible via low-latency browser connections, the new feature provides centralized and remote teams with the speed and flexibility to resolve on-air issues fast.

The company also will unveil HTML content monitor, which allows operators to embed live web dashboards, analytics and dynamic streaming sites like YouTube into multiviewer mosaics, enabling broadcasters to oversee traditional broadcast and web content via a unified interface, the company said.

Mediaproxy also will highlight the debut of Monwall Server, an extension of its establisher multviewer platform. This option produces streaming output in multiple low-latency formats, supporting multi-screen mosaics and hybrid deployments without needing additional virtual servers, it said.

It will also feature a new cloud licensing model that offers broadcasters a scalable, pay-per-use approach to deploying LogServer and Monwall on demand, which is well-suited to live events and flexible channel management, it said.

Monitoring audio and video content in today’s increasingly complex media environment requires more flexibility than ever. Fortunately, broadcasters’ adoption of IP and the cloud have brought that flexibility to a more reasonable integration level and price point.

As production environments evolve, the role of multiviewers continues to expand, according to Ketan Patel, product manager, multiviewer systems for Evertz. “Today’s multiviewers must handle a wide variety of signal types—compressed and uncompressed, IP and SDI—and operate seamlessly across both on-prem and cloud infrastructures,” he says.

With more operations adopting the SMPTE 2110 IP protocol, demand is increasing, Patel added. “Evertz has deployed over 600 SMPTE ST 2110 systems globally, many of which feature our high-density ev670-X30-HW-V2 modular platform and the ultra-high-density PREFEX multiviewer system.”

Michael Demb, vice president of product strategy for TAG, agreed that having flexibility across both cloud and on-prem is paramount in today’s multiviewer platforms.

“Multiviewers are evolving from passive displays into active operational hubs, central to how media teams manage software-defined workflows today,” he said. “As infrastructures decentralize and scale dynamically across cloud, on-prem, and hybrid environments, multiviewers like TAG’s are becoming the front line for real-time insight, signal integrity validation, and workflow control.”

Saving Money
Budgetary pressures are also driving broadcasters’ demands, and whether they’re deployed in a full-cloud scenario or hybrid on-prem, multiviewers are becoming more versatile, according to John Mailhot, senior vice president, product management, at Imagine Communications.

“Operational and cost efficiencies are top of mind in today’s dynamic production operations,” he said. “Whether signal processing is done in the cloud or on-prem, the multiviewer plays a critical role in enabling operations teams to make fast, informed, content-critical decisions.

“A robust multiviewer system allows operators to quickly identify and resolve issues in real time—ultimately enabling the team to manage more signals across more productions,” Mailhot added. “As a result, multiviewers will continue evolving from passive display systems to active enablers of efficient, scalable media operations.”

Erling Hedkvist, sales and business development for manifold, said his company’s platform can provide the best of both cloud and on-prem worlds.

“One of our big differentiators is that our customers get the flexibility of software and virtualization but with the performance of dedicated hardware that the live production industry demands,” he said. “This gives them subframe latency and uncompressed, high-quality processing but also a service-based architecture where they can spin services up and down on-demand and that is self-healing in case of an underlying hardware issue.”

Hedkvist touts the “secret sauce” of manifold’s cloud-based live production system: “The underlying design of manifold CLOUD is built around a shared memory architecture,” he said. “Media is first written into memory, allowing multiple services [such as multiviewers, format converters, color correctors and codecs] to access and process that data directly rather than relying on traditional signal paths. This architecture decouples processing from format and frame rate, as services work on pixel data in memory.”

Lower Latency
Monitoring live production often requires making split-second decisions, something that remains top of mind when dealing with latency. Suzana Brady, senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing for Cobalt Digital, said that even though the company’s UltraBlue SW-MV multiviewer is implemented in software on a PC platform, “it was designed with latency in mind.”

“For baseband inputs, the latency is around three frames to a screen, and less than that for a streaming output,” she said. “Scalability is provided by the PC platform, from lower-cost units for simple multiviewers to large platforms for units with lots of inputs and heads. There is a full-featured modern API to ease integration in complex workflows.”

The importance of integrating software-based multiviewing into live production platforms has been demonstrated through the flexibility offered by the cloud and IP, according to Evertz’ Patel.

“All [Evertz] platforms are designed to be part of a unified system, enabling operators to build highly dense, format-agnostic monitoring solutions across 3G, UHD, compressed and uncompressed feeds,” Patel said. “Whether it’s for native IP, hybrid or SDI workflows, users can scale according to their operational requirements without compromising quality or latency.”

When it comes to the variety of high-resolution formats, including HDR, vendors have adopted a format-agnostic approach and upped their processing power.

Chris Scheck, head of marketing content for Lawo, says the efficiency of the company’s HOME Multiviewer—available as a standalone solution and as part of Lawo’s HOME Apps ecosystem—is architected to consume less power, making monitoring more efficient.

“In combination with a .edge Hyper-Density SDI/IP Gateway and Processing unit, which can simultaneously receive and output SDI signals and generate smaller-resolution versions of video input signals, the HOME Multi­viewer can be used in a so-called intelligent workflow that uses no more than the absolutely required amount of network bandwidth for each PiP [picture in picture], based on its size, thus ensuring that the input bandwidth never exceeds the output bandwidth,” Sheck said, adding that such proxies are important when operating in a bandwidth-
restricted environment.

“UHD streams, for instance, comprise a lot more data than is needed for a small PiP; not having to downscale such PiP footage therefore means that fewer CPU cores are needed to process the information,” he said. “The allocation of the relevant proxy to each PiP/tile is handled automatically while the multiviewer head is being configured with the intuitive theWALL app.”

New Features
While multiviewing continues to evolve, vendors are continually adding new features that take advantage of the flexibility offered by IP and the cloud.

At IBC this month, Mediaproxy is introducing Instant Replay for live incident review along with the ability to monitor HTML content directly within mosaic outputs. Designed to streamline the process of incident investigation, Instant Replay allows broadcast operators and engineers to instantly review incidents that occur during live broadcasts.

“Being able to have high-quality instant replay within our ecosystem of monitoring tools will significantly reduce the time it takes to investigate and clear on-air incidents,” says Erik Otto, Mediaproxy CEO. “The addition of HTML data panels in both our interactive server-side multiviewers further underline our commitment to solving real-world problems for customers today.”

Lawo is taking its HOME Video Monitor app out of the facility and making it more accessible to operators, according to Scheck.

“With its HOME Video Monitor app, Lawo is about to launch a solution that allows users to monitor video feeds on their laptops and mobile devices, which is extremely useful for busy operators who quickly need to check something on their way to a different location,” he says. “While this may not be a replacement for a full-blown multiviewer, it may be practical for certain workflows.”

What About AI?
Vendors are taking the same cautious approach towards implementing artificial intelligence into their multiviewing platforms as their customers are.

TAG is actively exploring the potential of adding AI as part of its long-term innovation road map. “We’re engaged in early-stage development to evaluate how technologies like Multimodal AI and agentic AI could support operational efficiency, simplify workflows, and enhance the monitoring experience,” Demb said, adding that “any future capabilities will be designed to augment—not replace—human decision-making, and to serve the real-world needs of our customers.”

There are no immediate plans for manifold to integrate AI into its multi­viewer line, the company says. In fact, “we recently signed a significant contract with a major U.K. broadcaster that explicitly prohibits the inclusion of AI in the deliverables,” Hedkvist says. “[This is] a clear sign that there’s still hesitation among Tier-1 customers when it comes to unsupervised AI in live production workflows.”

Scheck concurs that the jury is still out when it comes to adopting AI.

“Lawo’s HOME Multiviewer comes equipped with a flexible logic system for alarm and tally functions to allow users to catch errors in a timely fashion and remain in control,” he says. “Whether AI could play a part in this is certainly worth investigating, even though a deterministic approach based on algorithms and real-world experience may be hard to beat for some time to come.”

Scheck adds that some operators are taking multiviewing to another level.

“One of our customers now operates OB trucks that are no longer equipped with multiviewer walls; the screens have been replaced by Apple Vision Pro headsets,” he says. “From what we have heard, getting used to them was rather straightforward, and operators in those trucks like the thrill of working with flexible cutting-edge tools and increasingly consider multiviewer walls as somewhat ‘old-school.’ ”

Nevertheless, all the bells and whistles being added to multiviewers don’t take away the essential role of the technology, according to Cobalt’s Brady.

“We don’t see the fundamental role of multiviewers changing in live broadcast, their purpose has remained consistent since the early days of television,” she says. “What is changing is the scale, quality, and accessibility of multiviewing in modern, software-defined infrastructures.”

In addition to many updates to the LogServer suite, Mediaproxy will introduce Monwall Server, a new product that extends its existing interactive multiviewing applications to provide traditional output streaming. This development adds support for all of Dolby's distribution codecs and the Dolby Atmos immersive audio format to the LogServer compliance monitoring software platform and Monwall multiviewer.

The Dolby Atmos immersive system is used for major feature films and is also a key element in many movies and high-end drama series streamed on Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+. Dolby Atmos is an object-based audio (OBA) format that is also a feature of Dolby AC-4, which offers a wide range of features including dialogue intelligibility, audio description and alternative languages and commentaries, all with a high degree of personalization.

The Dolby AC-4 codec is part of the approval Mediaproxy has received from Dolby, along with its other key compression technologies: AC-3 (also known as Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound) and E-AC3, branded as Dolby Digital Plus, which supports up to 15.1 audio channels. The LogServer suite of software, including its Monwall multiviewer, now provides full monitoring and analysis of all these formats and the multiple channels and audio objects that comprise them, Mediaproxy said.

MELBOURNE, Australia—Mediaproxy will spotlight its recently acquired A3SA certification as well as its full range of compliance monitoring and multiviewer systems, which now provide for decryption of ATSC 3.0-based broadcasts, during NAB Show New York, Oct. 9-10, at the Javits Center in New York City.

The company received A3SA (ATSC 3.0 Security Authority) in August and now offers 3.0 stream decryption as part of its software-based LogServer and Monwall product ranges, enabling broadcasters to monitor and analyze ATSC 3.0 streams without the need for custom devices, it said.

With A3SA security protocol integration into LogServer, the logging and monitoring engine offers broadcasters a cost-effective option to allow them to monitor encrypted signals to-air and off-air signals. For to-air and hand-off applications, an on-premises LogServer system is able to take the encrypted STLTP (Studio to Transmitter Link Transport Protocol) output of the packager directly from the stream, providing confidence in what is sent to the transmitter straight from the local IP network, the company said.

For off-air applications, it is possible to use inexpensive integrated receiver/decoders (IRDs) that do not offer decryption but are equipped with encrypted IP stream outputs via DASH/ROUTE or the recently approved ALP A/330 Link-Layer Protocol, it said.

The capability enables ATSC 3.0 compliance for IRDs used for streaming platforms, such as HDHomeRun, with LogServer managing the DRM aspects for all channel sources, it said.

The new ATSC 3.0 security feature is also available on Mediaproxy's Monwall multiviewer. It accommodates low-latency monitoring of both encrypted outgoing and return signals.

Mediaproxy has also developed an extended toolset for advanced IP packet and table analysis of live broadcast streams or PCAP (packet) captures, which can be accessed via easy-to-use user interfaces, it said.

"Recent figures show that NextGen TV is now reaching 75 percent of US television households so broadcasters need to be aware of ways they can efficiently and cost-effectively monitor and decrypt ATSC 3.0 streams,” said company chief executive Erik Otto. “This is an important advance for Mediaproxy and NAB Show New York is the ideal place to showcase it."

In advance of the 2024 IBC Show, Sept. 13-16 at the RAI Amsterdam, TV Tech spoke with Eric Ott, CEO of Mediaproxy, who will be exhibiting at Stand 5.D72 in the show's Content Everywhere Zone.

TV Tech: Why did you choose to exhibit in the Content Everywhere Zone this year?
Eric Ott: The Content Everywhere zone has become central to our key competences. The IBC halls are well-structured to provide customers and vendors with zones of interest. A lot of our partners are also in the hall, providing everyone with a kind of symbiosis platform. It’s also physically located in a central spot, making it easier for customers to get to meetings. The ‘Content Everywhere’ label also resonates with what we are providing to the industry as our technology has become very versatile, providing tools across a wide range of formats.

TVT: What will you be highlighting at your exhibit?
EO: We are showing the latest incarnation of our LogServer platform. After almost 25 years, it is well-established as the global standard for regulatory compliance, but also straddles across multiple disciplines of the monitoring chain. This nowadays includes best-of-breed SCTE-104/35 ad insertion monitoring across the playout chain to OTT and cloud-native monitoring.

Another growing part in the portfolio is our Monwall IP multiviewer. We have taken a modern approach to what IP monitoring needs to look like these days, especially at scale. The traditional methods only provide a certain amount of, mainly passive, functionality. For Monwall we have taken a more interactive approach to reduce the time it takes for operators and engineers to resolve incidents. We look forward to introducing more broadcasters to that concept.

TVT: Which trends do you expect will be most important at the show this year?
EO: The current trend with bleeding more AI into products will be proving a lot of the novelty. This conversation will certainly continue at the IBC Show. AI does have a great deal of potential in being able to learn and repeat common or more basic operational tasks in broadcasting, which has particular applications in monitoring. It will be interesting to see how the legal implications around this will determine more widely spread uptake in the short term.

After the Olympics, HDR would also have to creep up on everyone’s interest or to-do list. It looks like 4K has become less of a target as civilians appear to be responding to the extended colour range more than resolution. As an upsell, it seems to make more sense at this stage at least. Also, the migration from SDI to IP is progressing. I guess we all remember when the ‘SDI is dead’ posters lined the passage between halls 7 and 8 at IBC a few years back. The then amusingly provocative proclamation, has clearly not yet materialised. However, with a finally growing ecosystem of products and more cost-effective glue equipment surfacing rapidly, we should see this tip in IP’s favour now.

TVT: What brings you back to IBC every year?
EO: Certainly not the taxi queue at Schiphol airport! On a more serious note, IBC provides us with the opportunity to bring our global teams together and meet with both existing and new clients to discuss their needs. Nothing beats face to face and on stand demos are key to the work we do (and what we achieve) at the show.

The ATSC 3.0 standard delivers high levels of encryption to ensure content accessed through broadcasters' websites is more secure, which in turn protects the viewers. By incorporating A3SA security protocols into the core of its LogServer engine, Mediaproxy is able to provide broadcasters with a cost-effective option to monitor both encrypted to-air and off-air signals.

For to-air and hand-off monitoring, an on-premises LogServer system is able to simply take the encrypted STLTP (Studio to Transmitter Link Transport Protocol) output of the packager directly from the stream. This guarantees confidence in what is sent to the transmitter straight from the local IP network, the company reported. 

In off-air monitoring situations, it is possible to use inexpensive and familiar integrated receiver/decoders (IRDs) that do not provide decryption but do have outputs of the encrypted IP streams through DASH/ROUTE (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP/Real-time Object delivery over Unidirectional Transport). This enables ATSC 3.0 compliance on IRDs for streaming platforms such as HDHomeRun, with LogServer handling the DRM aspects for all channel sources, Mediaproxy said. 

The new ATSC 3.0 security feature is also available on Mediaproxy's ever-expanding Monwall hybrid multiviewer, which accommodates low-latency monitoring of both encrypted outgoing and return signals. Alongside the features on Monwall and LogServer, Mediaproxy has developed an extended toolset for advanced IP packet and table analysis of live broadcast streams or PCAP (packet) captures, which can be accessed via easy-to-use user interfaces.

MELBOURNE, Australia—Mediaproxy will feature the latest additions to its LogServer compliance monitoring system, including support for AI-powered captioning and transcription as well as open monitoring and orchestration software at IBC 2024, Sept. 13-16, at the RAI Amsterdam Convention Center.

LogServer now incorporates support for AI-Media Technologies LEXI Recorded self-serve captioning and transcription as well as Skyline Communications DataMiner, an open monitoring and orchestration solution, the company said.

For U.S. broadcasters, LogServer offers ATSC 3.0 capability for NextGen IP channels. Mediaproxy has developed a new, software-based technique for monitoring both on-air and off-air ATSC 3.0 streams, which is necessary to analyze the multiple segments and services being carried, it said.

LogServer also conforms to the main standards currently used for broadcast TV and streaming, including SMPTE ST 2110 and NMOS (Networked Media Open Specifications), for the transport of media over IP networks, and SCTE (Society of Telecommunications Engineers) guidance on dynamic ad insertion. Mediaproxy also will demonstrate cloud operation and the ability to work with clustering decentralized systems on IP networks, it said.

The company will show a new clip processor and publisher. Redesigned from the ground up, the solution builds on the success of the LogJam engine in providing scalable options for processing workflows, it said. 

Mediaproxy also will feature the latest generation of software-based interactive multiviewing systems and other additions to the Monwall multiviewer, it said.

TV TECH: What do you anticipate will be the most significant technology trends at the 2024 NAB Show?

ERIK OTTO: Just about everybody in all walks of life seems to be obsessed with—or intimidated by—AI right now. So I expect it to be one of the big talking points at the 2024 NAB Show, if not the most significant technology trend. AI does have a great deal of potential in being able to learn and repeat common or more basic operational tasks in broadcasting, which has particular application in compliance monitoring. The downside is that some broadcasters and facilities might see it as an opportunity to reduce the number of trained staff in their master control rooms or even try to do away with them entirely, thinking even more automation is the way to go. There is also the cost of implementation to consider, so people will have to be realistic and somewhat circumspect in working with AI. It could be a useful assistive tool but it is not a cure-all.

Although HDR and the migration from SDI to IP have been discussed for some time, they are ongoing trends that will become ever more important as a growing number of broadcasters implement both of them. The two issues will be a specific consideration in terms of compliance, with bigger program file packages to monitor and analyze over newly installed IP networks.

TVT: What will be your most important product news?

OTTO: We will have some exciting news to announce during this year’s NAB Show but don’t want to spoil the surprise ahead of the game. The broadcast and streaming markets continue to evolve and expand at a rapid rate, which puts the onus on technology providers such as ourselves to keep developing systems that will provide all the necessary logging and monitoring functionality required on future media networks. At this point all I can say is that we have been busy making sure our flagship technology is one step ahead of where broadcasters need to be in such an ever-changing environment but you’ll have to wait and come to our booth to see the end result.

TVT: How is your new product different from what’s available on the market?

Over the years, the cost of good television equipment has bucked the general inflationary trend. For example, you can buy a camera and lens today that is far better than a camera and lens from 20 years ago, and today’s gear will cost just 50% or less of what the camera would have cost you in 2003.

When using that camera back in the day, you probably wanted to view its output on a waveform monitor to get the exposure right. Today’s camera is likely to have a waveform display capability built in that can be called up anytime to check the exposure. So today’s production equipment not only often costs less than ever, it does more than ever.

Of course, video networks are far more complex today, and this complexity means that test and measurement/quality control equipment today has to do much more at the network level than was needed for the simpler networks two decades ago. Much of today’s network-level test gear is evolving with new measurement and analysis techniques, as the video streaming environment gets more complicated and demanding over time.

“As delivery systems have become more complex, the demand for versatile and advanced digital monitoring and analysis solutions has increased,” said Anupama Anantharaman, vice president for product management at Interra Systems. “As a result, single-purpose monitoring gear has taken a backseat to more adaptable multifunctional tools. These tools leverage the power of new content creation and delivery standards—and computer networks—to provide comprehensive monitoring capabilities that cover various aspects of stream analysis and signal evaluation.”

The Impact of ST 2110
Signals that conform to the SMPTE ST 2110 standard have multiple components (video, audio and ancillary data) each transmitted as separate streams. An IP-based stream monitor can analyze, evaluate and route these streams and extract the metadata based on the user’s workflow, providing full flexibility.

“Software-based tools used on an IP network can efficiently extract and analyze this metadata, allowing broadcasters to monitor and verify critical information such as format, timing and identification,” Anantharaman said. “In the context of video, waveform monitors can sometimes fail to detect problems due to human error. However, by using IP-based probes, operators can automate the process of stream verification for today’s vast amount of content.”

Human error notwithstanding, standalone testing and QC devices still have value in many operations and workflows.

“Although the underlying infrastructure of how media is transported has changed, the overall tasks that need to be accomplished by operators and engineers are still fundamentally the same,” said Don Kianian, solutions marketing manager for Telestream. “The workload has increased and the need to manage these workflows efficiently is paramount. 

“Traditional, familiar waveform monitoring tools are still extremely useful to monitor and measure video and audio signals,” he added. “They may also be complemented by other software tools (such as quality control solutions) that can automatically QC content and alert users to media that does not meet spec.”

Telestream serves both OTT and broadcasters, and Kianian said the company is seeing a shift in how the two are evolving.

“We’re certainly seeing OTA adopting more and more OTT technologies and solutions [e.g., cloud workflows, remote collaboration, AI/ML] as part of a broadcaster/content provider’s overall strategy to reach broader audiences and go toe-to-toe with the increasing number of content providers in the market,” he said. “I expect this tug-of-war to continue well into this year and beyond.”

Upgrade to ATSC 3.0
Traditional broadcasters are in the early phases of a soft transition to the ATSC 3.0 standard, which is much more IP-friendly than the outgoing ATSC 1.0. What does this mean with respect to test and measurement equipment, and what lies ahead?

“As the transition to ATSC 3.0 heats up in the United States, we are seeing increased interest in test and measurement equipment,” said Ralph Bachofen, vice president of sales and marketing at Triveni Digital. “The transition to ATSC 3.0 is an opportunity for broadcasters to upgrade their T&M suite.

“With the latest T&M equipment, broadcasters can ensure outstanding-quality NextGen TV services, better understand the new standard, and simultaneously deliver ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0 transmissions during the simulcast phase.”

Bachofen explained that single-purpose test gear is still in use, but it has an easily understood limiting factor.

“Single-purpose gear is still in use, especially in the RF realm,” he said. “The trend is to adopt multipurpose systems for service quality assurance and enterprise-wide monitoring. Single-purpose gear is much more expensive than having a solution from one vendor that can monitor multiple demarcation points at the same time.”

The sheer volume of production today means that more test, measurement and quality control gear than ever is needed. And yes, that means devices such as waveform monitors.

“The demands of operational television businesses are largely unchanged in that content has to meet in-house delivery standards as well as regulatory requirements,” said Prinyar Boon, product manager at Phabrix. “This remains the case regardless of how it’s been carried: file, streamed, broadcast, compressed, uncompressed, SDI, IP, MT2TS and so on.”

New Signal Types
Although production facilities need to measure and confirm the quality of signals, the relatively recent (and ongoing) industry transition from SDI to ST 2110 means new test gear is needed for the new signal types, according to Boon.

“To complicate the picture, many of these facilities will use both SDI- and IP-based systems,” Boon said. “We’ve been deeply involved for many years with the development of workflows for live HDR production, and measurement tools for ST 2110 systems using precision time protocol (PTP), while also retaining traditional SDI-based toolsets. 

“So yes, we’d agree very much that the era of standalone gear is over, and without doubt the long-term trend is to have operational and production tools evolve into on-prem and off-prem cloud-based systems.”

In the days when broadcast OTA was the only game in town, broadcasters could rely on knowing that the signal was properly received on a monitor TV in the studio. If the picture/sound were good on that TV, then all viewers were receiving a quality signal.

In the OTT world, it is much more difficult for a program provider to check what the user experience is—especially when dozens of network operators (Comcast, Verizon, Cox, etc.) actually take the signal from the program provider and deliver it to the customer. Ensuring a quality experience in this environment is complicated… but not impossible.

“Because of the user-centric technology in modern video streaming, measuring the quality of the video transmission sent out doesn’t necessarily offer insight into the quality of the video received by the customer,” said Mathieu Planche, CEO of Witbe. “Furthermore, true video service performance is now defined by many more elements than just the image quality alone. User-centric video services need to be tested with user-centric monitoring technology.”

Location, Location, Location
In other words, sensors from the test system must be placed as close to the user as possible to make sure the network delivers the expected quality to the customer.

“Checking that a FAST channel is available on Comcast NOW TV cannot be verified through simple packet loss,” Planche said. “It involves complex interactions between backend systems, cloud-to-cloud integration, device operating systems, content providers, ad providers and various DRM stacks. OTT providers need user-centric monitoring technology to understand the true quality delivered to their end-users.”

This is where artificial intelligence (AI) could play an important role in monitoring networks and responding to failures faster than a human can react. In the meantime, change and growth is constant in the program delivery process.

“As the weight shifts further to online content and live streaming, having a solid grip on the entire chain becomes more important,” said Rajesh Patel, vice president for sales & solutions EMEA at Mediaproxy. “With an ever-increasing scale of sources, using software-based tools and APIs to optimize monitoring workflows will help reduce overall cost and enhance quality-of-service. 

“Teaming up with partners with solutions that straddle multiple disciplines is something to look at as old equipment becomes obsolete,” he continued. “This also includes shifting the thinking towards what the cloud can offer to handle specific pressure points.”

Patel sees that there is still a need for hardware-specific test equipment, even as change is coming.

“Despite the ever-growing availability of software-based tools, traditional hardware-based monitoring equipment is certainly still relevant in today’s monitoring chain,” he said. “This is especially still true for ST 2022-2 as well as for the emerging SDI replacement, ST 2110.” 

MELBOURNE—Mediaproxy has announced that it has further expanded its support for the audio watermarking technologies employed by global measurement and data analytics company Nielsen. 

Mediaproxy, which is already a certified provider of decoding technology for Nielsen's NAVE (Nielsen Audio Video Encoder) system, is now also providing support for CBET (Critical Band Encoding Technology) layer 1 watermarks.

The latest versions of Mediaproxy's LogServer compliance analysis monitor now includes officially certified encoding/decoding capabilities for CBET watermarking. CBET codes enable broadcasters to embed audio content into broadcast streams, which can then be passively detected by PPM (portable people meter) devices that gauge the exposure of test audiences to encoded material, Mediaproxy reported. 

Introduced by Nielsen in 2015, CBET layer 1 watermarks were designed for audience research in the radio market, a sector Mediaproxy operates in parallel to its core broadcast television and streaming business. As well as being used by Nielsen in the U.S., CBET has also been deployed by the Numeris ratings measurement organization in Canada.

The expanded support is the most recent development in the ongoing business relationship between Nielsen and Mediaproxy, which is one of only a few compliance system manufacturers to receive official certification from the audience data specialist. Mediaproxy was already certified to decode Nielsen's NAVE audio watermarking technology. This capability was incorporated into LogServer, enabling it to identify watermarks in the audio segment of compressed ATSC digital transport streams before and after transmission.

MELBOURNE—Mediaproxy has announced that the outside broadcast and playout facilities group NEP is using Mediaproxy’s LogServer software for SMPTE ST 2110 recording at its Norwegian operation.

NEP Norway first began using Mediaproxy software in 2017, when it chose LogServer for its next generation compliance recording on the SDI channels distributed from its playout center. This replaced a custom-built system and when the company needed a logging system for new ST 2110 services, the decision was taken to expand the installation, which was facilitated by LogServer's easy software-based integration for uncompressed IP video sources, Mediaproxy reported. 

The new channel platform was installed in the second quarter of this year. 

In addition to compliance monitoring, the solution is also used to check problems on already-broadcast programs, while the As-run feature provides a record for advertisers of what has been sent to air.

NEP Norway technical manager Rune Olsen explained that the key benefits of LogServer included its ease of use, stability and excellent support from Mediaproxy.

MELBOURNE, Australia—Mediaproxy today announced its flagship compliance logging and monitoring LogServer system is now available on a per-use-basis, offering broadcasters and facilities an OpEx alternative.

Broadcasters covering a special event or creating additional, temporary services can now rent on an as-needed basis for the duration of their event, the company said.

Pop-up channels, which include both the red button option on digital terrestrial platforms and cloud-based services, allow broadcasters to offer their audiences more choice. They also bring more operational responsibilities to ensure quality of experience (QoE) and compliance with regulatory standards, it said.

Mediaproxy LogServer provides a powerful and broad feature set for checking not only the output at the master control room (MCR) but also the various programs streams along the distribution chain. The decision to make LogServer available as a rental enables users to license the system as and when needed without having to commit to a minimum rental period, it said.

The new rental package includes LogServer as well as support. It covers unlimited users, and all clients’ apps, the company said.

Pop-up channels only work with a specific range of inputs sources: TSoIP, IP, OTT HLS/DASH, SMPTE-2110, SMPTE 2022-6 and streaming sources. LogServer has full capability to work with these formats and standards. It is also able to handle video transport protocols, including SRT (Secure Reliable Transport), Zixi, HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) and RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol), it said.

“Modern software-based compliance systems such as LogServer have the flexibility to record pop-up or event-based channels for only the period these services need to run. SYDNEY, Australia—NPC Media (NPCM) is a joint venture between two of Australia's largest commercial broadcasters, Seven Network (SWM) and Nine Network (NEC). From purpose-built operational facilities in Sydney, we distribute the digital terrestrial and OTT channels of both Seven and Nine, plus those of Southern Cross Austereo in regional Australia.

With so many channels to play out, we knew that monitoring and compliance logging was essential for the smooth running of NPCM. To do this effectively we selected technology from Australian developer Mediaproxy, including their LogServer logger-monitor system, which also provides multichannel recording and review capabilities, and the Monwall multiviewer. These are used for emission and off-air monitoring in a master control room designed to carry out a new style of inspecting output in the era of terrestrial-OTT hybrid broadcasting.

FINDING A NEW APPROACH

The design of the playout monitoring setup at NPCM had to encompass all metro, regional and local broadcast services, plus all OTT and streaming for Seven and Nine. Because of this we didn’t want to use the traditional techniques of operators sitting and looking at many monitors, partly because of subtle issues being lost in the multitude of small pictures (PIPS), and also because this method consumes large amounts of real estate.

The big step forward from previous traditional techniques used in MCRs is exception-based monitoring. This is based on interactive multiviewers, which allow operators in the control center to look at different parts of the distribution chain and troubleshoot using integrated software tools. Reacting quickly to complex problems is something only a human can do. To enable our staff to do this we give them a much simpler way of monitoring, without having to continually focus on large numbers of individual pictures.

If you see all green boxes in the display, that means everything is OK. Issues are highlighted in red and these feeds can be monitored as a picture and audio feed and investigated. We have worked closely with Mediaproxy to streamline the traditional MCR workflow. Monwall is now the main means of monitoring emission so instead of passively watching feeds on traditional multiviewers streaming a composite of channels to a remote display and using under-monitor tools to further analyze any incidents, operators can interact with the multiviewer itself and examine any problems in situ.

MORE EFFICIENT MONITORING

Everything runs on standard COTS equipment, with the capability for multiple SMPTE ST 2022-6 streams on one server. To further enhance the workflow and not involve reconfiguring when sources are switched to “protect,” input sources are controlled via the Ember+ protocol to set up virtual source end-points that can react dynamically to sources being played-out by the automation system. 

Using COTS hardware gives us a route to the cloud for high-end broadcasting; we're not there yet in terms of full public cloud playout due to bandwidths and latency, but we are effectively using our own private cloud for services.

As a result of such high levels of automation and effective fault detection, the main MCR at NPCM can be run with fewer operators managing more than 200 channels. We are testing other encoding formats—including HEVC—and we have an infrastructure that allows us to economically adopt new formats and technologies. 

We're still in the early days of IP network environments but with dark fiber we can increase bandwidths and launch digital services as necessary. With the infrastructure we have the impact is reduced and we know that we can expand our monitoring capability to meet demand. l

MELBOURNE, Australia—Mediaproxy has upgraded its LogServer logging and monitoring system with the ability to work with Zixi and SRT formats. The update allows LogServer to be used by OTT service operators running low latency streams.

Zixi is a software-defined live streaming platform that can produce broadcast-quality service over any IP network, protocol, cloud provider or edge device. SRT (Secure Reliable Transport), meanwhile, is an open-source video transport protocol based on UDP (User Datagram Protocol) technology to deliver high-quality, low-latency video over the public internet.

Mediaproxy plans to feature upgrades for its LogServer logging, monitoring and analysis system this spring. 

The company will highlight its path toward support for the SMPTE ST 2110 suite of IP-based media transport and production standards, including ST 2110-20, -30 and -40 as well as the new compressed video essence ST 2110-22 standard for 4K HDR sources.

LogServer already supports SMPTE ST 2022-6 for logging and the Monwall multipanel live streaming multiviewer.

The company is now also offering ST 2022-7 support for seamless protection switching to provide flexibility even in virtual environments. LogServer also supports the Ember+ control protocol to avoid manual intervention in source switching, enhancing monitoring automation and redundancy.

QUINCY, Ill.—Quincy Media is among the leading local television groups in the United States, with stations nationwide from Arizona to New York, as well as two newspapers, two radio stations and digital media platforms. The TV operation involves 24 transmitters, 15 master control rooms, 19 production control rooms and a growing OTT presence simulcast alongside the main terrestrial broadcasts.

An operation of this scale requires comprehensive compliance monitoring in all senses of the term—technical faults, advertising data collection and complaints resolution. Because of this we chose to install a new logging system based on a suite of Mediaproxy products: LogServer TSoIP (Transport Stream over IP), OTT Logging and Monitoring and TS Monitoring/Analysis.

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW

The need to replace an older monitoring system was one factor behind the upgrade, but there were many other considerations, both technical and operational. Particularly because the old system did not work if the terrestrial transmission went down due to a power outage or other reasons, we needed something that would continue recording no matter what and have 24-hour record capability.

This last feature was important because we have to be able to produce transmission recordings for reference and confirmation in case of queries or protests. If there are any complaints from viewers or advertisers, we need to be able to verify what actually went out. At certain times of the day some of our stations run unattended so having a comprehensive monitoring-recording system gives us the confidence that everything runs as expected. And if it doesn’t, we can go back and see why.

To find a suitable replacement our technical teams tested and demoed three to four different units. From these sessions the Mediaproxy systems emerged as offering all the necessary features. Mediaproxy seemed the most reliable and had an easy-to-use, intuitive interface. It also has 24-hour recording capability and can keep operating even if the transmission is interrupted.

Quincy Media always monitors off air, rather than from the direct output of the broadcast center. This means the compliance recording will show exactly what viewers see and reflect the actual fault. The Mediaproxy systems also have capacity for monitoring OTT—although this has not been implemented yet, we’re working with our OTT providers to find a place to monitor our streams without the need for us to pay a monthly fee to them. There’s also been some discussion about implementing the specific commercial insertion function for OTT. It’s not up and running yet but it’s not far off.

GETTING RESULTS

Among the technical faults LogServer has been used to detect since the installation began in mid-July are: off-air signal problems, pictures appearing in black for too long, lost audio, issues with closed captions, equipment failure and operator error. We’re also using the system to log news broadcasts to ensure the correct music licensing clearances have been made and monitor competitors’ transmissions to see what advertising is being carried.

Each of Quincy Media’s local TV stations has its own, standalone monitoring setup. These are self-contained but they link together on an IT network so that any employee at any station within the group—whether in sales, engineering, administration or news—can see what is going on.

The feedback we’ve had from all departments has been positive, both about the ease of use and what the system can do. As a manager, I can watch any station from my desktop and I log into one of the systems at least once a day.

ALEXANDRIA, Va.—Government regulation isn’t going away. Neither are legal battles over everything from proof of advertising to equal treatment and FCC programming requirements.

Fortunately, one of the great benefits of the computer revolution of the past 25 years is the ability for broadcasters to more easily monitor, log and preserve information regarding their technical signals and programming content. And in the current repack environment where broadcasters are being crammed more tightly together, accurate real-time (or near real-time) data regarding transmission quality is a necessity.

“‘Compliance’ generally means conforming to standards set by governments or regulators to ensure the quality of broadcasts,” said Erik Otto, CEO of Mediaproxy, a provider of compliance and analysis technology. “This applies as much to the content of programs and editorial policy as it does technical standards for distribution and transmission. To ensure consistent technical quality for TV and streaming distribution, regulators and broadcasters work with recommendations and rules drawn up by national or international industry bodies, such as the EBU, ITU and SMPTE.”

Each country and regulator will set its own requirements for compliance based on these standards or guidelines, according to Otto.

“Broadcasters have to care about compliance because it not only ensures their viewers get the best possible audio and video quality on whatever device they are watching—TV, laptop, streaming service or mobile—but that they protect themselves from regulatory action or fines if their output were to drop below standard.”

NO CENTRAL LOCATION

In this new world of compliance requirements, there is no one central location where a broadcaster gets to decide if the signal meets the appropriate standards.

The master control room at a playout center is no longer the final point for quality control, Otto said.

“Video and audio need to be scrutinized as they pass along the delivery path, through content delivery network (CDN) edge points and numerous processes such as targeted ad insertion, multilanguage selection and event-based transmission,” he said. “This means compliance systems need to have the flexibility to be implemented at any point in the distribution chain.”

Depending on the nature of your broadcasting operation, some of what you need to measure, log and analyze may be in physical locations, and some may be in the cloud.

“Compliance logging and monitoring has been changing and evolving for several years,” Otto said. “This is primarily due to the widespread adoption of file-based operations, which has allowed for a more comprehensive use of IP-based software programs to log and analyze the content of TV material in data form. The main change brought about by broadcasters and facilities storing more program files in the cloud relates to where the logging, monitoring and analysis processes take place—because the cloud is usually the closest location to a CDN edge point, packet-level inspection of the streams is most effectively carried out at this stage.”

However, broadcasters are looking around and using the cloud only when it makes sense for their operations and budgets.

“From what we’ve see in the last few years, TV broadcasters are more and more checking the option of using the cloud,” said Sima Levy, CEO of Actus Digital. “However, the change is slow for compliance systems. This is because compliance is recording a TV channel 24/7, which means lots of storage. Also, more and more TV broadcasters would like to save the recorded video in high resolution format for other purposes, such as exporting clips to social media. Higher resolution means more processing power, and these both affect cloud costs. We do see partial cloud solutions only for storage.”

Still, even for a smaller broadcaster, cloud services have some merit.

“There is a huge advantage for station groups as they can deploy localized probes to collect data and media recordings from each market, and then aggregate them to the cloud for centralized monitoring, logging and analysis to improve consistency and efficiency,” said Ted Korte, chief technology officer for Qligent. “Even for a single call-letter station, the cloud provides the scalability to log and archive as long as they wish, and the flexibility to quickly accommodate the evolution of compliance logging.”

COVER A LOT OF GROUND

Depending on the country you’re in and the regulating agency, compliance can cover a lot of ground—some of it occasionally shifting beneath your feet. In the United States, it seems like there is something new every year that makes complying with the regulations a challenge.

“Regulators typically decide on compliance requirements based on the viewing experience of people at large, public safety, changes in technology [e.g., ATSC 3.0], cultural/ religious sensitivity [e.g., broadcasters in Arab countries might have some special compliance requirements] and many other considerations,” said Ashish Basu, vice president of global sales and business development at Interra Systems. “Most broadcasters are expected to know the compliance requirements that are mandated in their markets, and prepare the facility and configure the technology infrastructure accordingly.

“The regulators have a supervisory responsibility, so if a broadcaster is found to be non-compliant, a regulator could take punitive measures such as fines,” Basu added. “For example, the FCC fined some U.S. broadcasters for being noncompliant on supporting Emergency Access Tones.”

On the subject of ATSC 3.0, this is one of the shifting compliance requirements that U.S. broadcasters face.

Compared to ATSC 1.0, ATSC 3.0 provides a lot more flexibility in broadcast systems, including the opportunity for broadcasters to send content to fixed and mobile receivers in a seamless manner, combining OTT and broadband deliveries, according to Basu.

“Another difference is the option of choosing among SD, HD and UHD resolutions. ATSC 3.0 comprises around 20 standards covering different aspects of the system,” he added. “The standards are designed to offer support for newer technologies like HEVC video encoding for video channels of up to 4K resolution at 120 fps, HDR, Dolby AC4 and more robust mobile TV support. All these new technologies embedded in ATSC 3.0 have their compliance requirements; many of those would not have been required for ATSC 1.0.”

MEETING REQUIREMENTS

Keeping track of all this, especially for stations in smaller markets, is difficult. Of course, what is required today may be different in a year, but what are we looking at when it comes to meeting compliance requirements in the U.S.?

“The FCC has requirements that vary from station to station based on their market size and audience,” said Ken Rubin, vice president of sales for Vela Research. “For example, PBS and religious broadcasters with lower-powered transmitters have different regulations they must adhere to versus big stations in larger markets. Most [broadcasters] choose to retain a copy of their content for a minimum of 90 days, but many are maintaining it for years or in perpetuity—to make use of it beyond regulatory compliance.”

The drive to improve compliance has at least as much to do with the internet as it does with traditional over-the-air broadcasting.

“Regulatory compliance has been evolving in OTA broadcast for many decades, but OTT is still in its infancy,” Qligent’s Korte said. “Most OTA broadcasters also support OTT streaming services and, as more services are being outsourced, we are seeing many more service-level agreements coming into play to keep a good audit trail end-to-end.

“Quality and reliability of OTT is improving but not quite there yet, and there are too many moving parts to replace the robustness of a traditional linear broadcast,” Korte added. “Broadcasters have proven to provide the most reliable services and, by the nature of ‘public safety’ alone, should continue to use this as a driving force for viewership.”

Compliance is a complex topic, made more complex by the interplay between broadcasters’ main over-the-air feed and the growing numbers of OTT viewers they get for their valuable news content. OTT is still something of the “Wild West,” where just about anything goes, but broadcasters want to be sure that the quality they’re paying for is delivered to the viewer. After all, if there is a failure in OTT playback, the viewer will most likely blame the broadcaster and not the CDN operator.

At the same time, broadcasters have myriad regulations to follow, and need to maintain logs and records to prove they delivered content in the proper manner. Failure to do so can lead to serious fines and license renewal problems.

NEW YORK—The focus for Mediaproxy at this year’s NAB Show New York, Oct. 16-17, will be compliance and monitoring for linear television and OTT streaming, and it will demonstrate its capabilities in these areas with the latest version of the LogServer IP logging, monitoring and analysis system.

The LogServer system is designed to handle higher resolutions by converting any input, including 8K, to a proxy resolution. This also accommodates HEVC and TSoIP encoded streams.

Dedicated interactivity tools have also been incorporated into the LogServer platform, including features for cropping the image and altering the aspect ratio to better work with mobile devices, as well as the ability to insert ad bumpers.

Mediaproxy will also demonstrate exception-based monitoring, which uses IP penalty boxes for dealing with quality control and compliance. There is also a live source comparison tool that identifies mismatched content in real time and can compare one or more live sources using video material, with an alert being sent to operators when an irregularity is detected.

MELBOURNE, Australia—Illinois-based TV, radio and newspaper group Quincy Media is updating its monitoring and compliance operations, part of which will include the installation of MediaProxy’s LogServer compliance logging and off-air monitoring platform.

Quincy Media will use the LogServer system at all of its TV stations to log and monitor 138 off-air television services, as well as OTT streams. Qunicy’s specific setup will include the LogServer TSoIP, OTT Logging and Monitoring and TS Monitoring/Analysis systems; they will be deployed and supported by NFB Consulting.

Quincy Media owns television stations across nine states—Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Virginia and Wisconsin.

MELBOURNE, Australia—The big draw at the Mediaproxy booth for IBC 2019 will be the newly updated LogServer IP logging, monitoring and analysis system, according to the software manufacturer.

A key point of emphasis with this latest update for Mediaproxy was how material needs to meet specific requirements for certain platforms. As a result, LogServer now incorporates dedicated tools for cropping images and altering the aspect ratio, as well as having the capability to insert ad bumpers.

LogServer now also features support for SMPTE standards ST 2022-6 and ST 2110, which are used for uncompressed IP formats. There is also support for the Ember+ control protocol, which enhances monitoring automation and offers increased redundancy. In addition, LogServer can now work with Mediaproxy’s Monwall IP interactive multiviewer.

In addition, a live source comparison tool is among the updated offerings for LogServer. This gives the system an ability to identify mismatched content in real time and can compare one or more live sources using video material, with an alert sent to operators if irregularities are detected.

MELBOURNE, Australia—A series of updates have been made to Mediaproxy’s LogServer IP-based logging, monitoring and analysis software that will allow for the platform to support 8K, HEVC and Transport Stream over IP signals. In addition, Mediaproxy has added social media video editing capabilities to the system.

With the updates to LogSever, Mediaproxy is adapting to the growing need for being able to handle 8K resolution, with delivery involving HEVC compression and TSoIP streams. The LogServer can now handle 8K signals by converting any input to a proxy resolution.

In addition, with the growing need for being connected to social media, Mediaproxy has extended its social media publishing features for LogServer to include advanced editing functionality, allowing for the creation of clips for platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Dailymotion and Brightcove.

These changes are in addition to other updates for the LogServer platform in the last year, which includes OTT monitoring capability.

DUBLIN—Television broadcasting commenced in Ireland in 1961 and since then public broadcaster RTÉ (Raidió Teilifís Éireann) has expanded its channel offering and adopted new technologies to ensure the best possible transmission quality for its viewers. This approach has continued with the installation of a new compliance recording system based on technology developed by logging and monitoring specialist Mediaproxy.

RTÉ now broadcasts six TV channels from its headquarters in the south Dublin district of Donnybrook: RTÉ One, RTÉ 2, RTÉ News Now, children's channel RTÉjr, RTÉ One+1 and RTÉ 2+1. The broadcaster also operates four main national radio stations, including the Irish language Raidió na Gaeltachta, five digital-only radio services and new media platforms including the RTÉ.ie website and RTÉ Player.

Like other leading broadcasters today, RTÉ was facing the increasingly difficult task of monitoring multiple channels over linear and online outlets. With the compliance recording system it had been using to do this coming to the end of its life, a tender request to find a replacement was issued in 2017. "After evaluating a number of options, we concluded Mediaproxy provided the best overall fit in terms of our internal systems and budget and that it would help deliver a better-quality experience for our viewers," explains RTÉ Senior Technical Project Manager Paul Hennessy.

In laying out its brief for Compliance Recording, RTÉ drew up stringent technical specifications that would allow for recording of seven linear TV channels, with the option to expand to a total of 10. Chief amongst the stated requirements was for the system to record HD-SDI at up to 3mbp/s for each channel with capability for SDI encapsulated in IP, conforming to SMPTE standards ST 2022-6/7 and ST 2110. There also had to be the means for recording subtitles conforming to WST (World System Teletext) Line 335 and Free TV OP47 14/577, reference timecode and a minimum of eight audio channels.

The user interface and overall method of playing back information had to be in the form of a web client working with the HTML 5 player. This would have to display subtitles and/or timecode during the playback process, with options for selecting audio description or alternative language tracks. Another stipulation was the ability to share and export clips, either with or without the use of ancillary services, and send 24-hour block or data range outputs of selected channels to disk or other devices.

Search facilities needed to be based on a number of parameters, including data, time and metadata, as well as in conjunction with user-entered timecode. Content playback had to happen in real-time, with the ability to access the web client remotely from locations not on the broadcast center campus. Local storage of HD media for up to a year was another necessity, with the option of pushing material to a networked store.

All of this had to be fully automated with regards to continuity of recording, with provision for generating email or SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) alerts of faults such as frozen pictures, loss of video and/or audio, low levels, recording failure and absence of subtitles. In addition to this the system had to monitor and log loudness compliance and DPI (Digital Program Insertion), as well as integrating with Active Directory 208 and as-run data from channel management or schedule reconciliation systems.

On the recommendation of Dublin-based systems integrator Broadcast Video Services (BVS) via U.K. reseller Polar Graphics, RTÉ selected Mediaproxy's LogServer software logging, monitoring and reporting package. This offers compliance recording applications including the capability to seamlessly record multiple channels, which can then be reviewed and monitored live. It monitors video, audio and real-time data from the main formats used in broadcasting today, including 4K, IP, SDI, SMPTE 2022-6, SMPTE 2110, HLS and RTMP.

RTÉ's LogServer system conforms to the specifications laid out in the tender and also includes an HTML player, built-in multiviewer, OTT monitoring, watermark decoding and burnt-in metadata. It operates in two sites on the RTÉ campus in Donnybrook; the primary being in the TV center and the secondary in the Administration building. The two are connected over a fiber link.

The installation went live in early 2018 and has become a key part of RTÉ's operations. The system is used by more than 100 people, with the number of channels and interfaces expanding in just over a year. Commenting on LogServer's role at RTÉ, Paul Hennessy says, "Since we installed the compliance recording system we have launched a new channel, RTÉ 2+1, and moved to 24-hours a day broadcasting of RTÉ One+1. As part of the launch of those two channels we used the compliance monitoring system to assist with extensive testing. It has proven to be a very useful tool, with the ease of use, particularly in adding channels and users, being of great benefit."

That broadcasting has become more complex with the advent of OTT services is an understatement. Playout is no longer the final point of quality control. Going further down the content delivery chain, CDN edge points, targeted ad-insertion, multi-language support, and event-based channels require the expert scrutiny of broadcast engineers. The need to manage a more complex ecosystem with an ever-growing list of logging and compliance requirements has become a priority for content owners and regulators alike.

Yet the sheer scale of the problem defeats most customers. This is compounded by the fact that there is almost no point in trying to monitor those streams back in the facility.

It's a challenge that requires a fresh approach to monitoring.

OUTMODED MODEL

While traditional detection methods such as time and date searches and predefined metadata remain valid and are used widely, newer and more sophisticated software-based techniques such as digital watermarking and fingerprinting, combined with the increasing use of computer-based automation have to be considered viable alternatives.

When it comes to monitoring live channels over multiple OTT streams and ABR profiles, it is no longer practical for display panels to mirror all the possible video outlets. There is a wide choice of devices and delivery outlets that need to be supported and viewers expect the same level of service, no matter how they are accessing content. The days of tracking one channel in one format and resolution are long gone. Today, each mezzanine file could be processed into HLS, MPEG-DASH and SmoothStreaming protocols, each carrying various bitrates and resolutions. Humans will struggle to visually monitor so many different profiles simultaneously.

This is exacerbated by an outmoded model in which monitoring is done on signals leaving the central broadcast center or facility from equipment housed in local servers and storage. This remains the norm for many operations but there is an increasing shift towards off-premises, cloud-based working, with storage and data management overseen by a third-party provider.

Some are using tablets and phones in MCR, thinking they are monitoring their CDN originating streams, where they are actually so far down the chain that it’s more an exercise of monitoring the in-house internet connection. Sarcasm aside, the number of hops between the origin and where they are monitoring assumes a perfect connection and no disruption anywhere in the path. This does of course not reflect the truth of the situation and one has to look at another, better, approach.

MONITORING THE RIGHT CONTENT

Considering the CDN provider operates at packet level only and does not alter the image payload, pictures will be the same once reaching edge locations and on to the final viewing device. Though content may be correctly streaming from the playout encoder, an edge location may experience its own issues, which could be local or originating from within the CDN. Issues such as local blackouts, bandwidth discrepancies and re-buffering may not be immediately apparent to OTT streams downstream of the CDN.

Also, what happens if national and regional feeds deviate? Or when the wrong program, or an incorrect version, is played out? What happens if the wrong graphics or tickers are mistakenly overlaid on a live broadcast? These issues are becoming increasingly critical for comparing traditional linear services with OTT representations and are very difficult to pinpoint by only looking at OTT playout.

The key is to monitor the right content in the right place at the right time.

As a new approach, a software-based solution is placed nearest to the CDN, in the cloud or data center, where ingress is free, fast and reliable and only a short hop from the origin. The software performs packet level analysis and real-time monitoring, then sends the detected events back to the MCR or the facility via a very low bandwidth path for operators to visualize the status of all streams in great detail.

It means ABR streams are monitored and logged not only from playout, but also from various edge locations. It means on-premises monitoring of outgoing playout streams is linked to cloud-based instances monitoring and analyzing CDN edge streams for unified visibility of all activity.

Engineers are provided with analysis data for all streams without having to backhaul streams from the remote sites. Operators can reconcile and compare originating transcoder outputs to CDN edge points using both traditional broadcast and data-centric panels. Customers greatly reduce bandwidth consumption and therefore costs, by not having to send payloads back to master control.

By having cloud and on-premises facilities working in tandem, the monitoring and detection of stored media assets and live broadcasts can both improve the efficiency of modern broadcast workflows and reduce operating costs. In short, this model rethinks OTT workflows, makes it more meaningful whilst enabling reliable, large scale and real-time monitoring at low cost.

Keeping up with so many OTT streams can be daunting, which is why having a unified system for monitoring compliance and identifying issues across all traditional and OTT playouts is critical. To address the complexity, Mediaproxy LogServer enables operators to log and monitor outgoing ABR streams as well as Transport Stream and OTT stream metadata including event triggers, closed captions, and audio information, all from one place.

It is the key to surviving the multiformat game of the future.

NEW YORK—Compliance monitoring has evolved over the past decade from simple broadcast logging to what is now a much broader range of applications that encompass monitoring, analysis and even revenue-generating functions for broadcasters, OTT providers and MVPD operators. Today’s digital tools have largely replaced the VHS long-play tape recorders to log transmissions, and other new technologies promise to only increase how broadcasters and others can utilize and even monetize what was once just compliance monitoring.

“The need for compliance loggers comes from the legal requirement to log all broadcasted content,” said Ken Frommert, president of ENCO, a Southfield, Mich.-based provider of broadcast technology systems. “This need, arising from the national telecom regulators, such as the FCC, did not change. However, the ever-increasing economic pressure on the same broadcasters, coupled with the fact the compliance loggers are an economic liability with no real business benefit, will necessarily force a technological evolution that will change the loggers into becoming economically beneficial.”

FROM BROADCAST TO OTT

Compliance monitoring is now at a massive transformational stage.

“To start, while compliance services have their roots in traditional broadcasting, we’re seeing the need for compliance services to not only cover broadcast, but also OTT content,” said Ariff Sidi, chief product officer for content delivery network provider Verizon Digital Media Services. “An increasing number of services now offer the ability to monitor OTT streams, and that trend will continue this year and beyond. We’ll see monitoring capabilities enhanced to cover the full path—from ingestion to delivery and through to the end user experience as well. Second, there will continue to be a major shift from compliance monitoring services being hardware-based to cloud-based.”

Even traditional compliance monitoring is now changing in terms of the content being monitored, the level of detail and even how long to store the results. Much of this wouldn’t have been possible just a few years ago.

“A simple studio-based ‘Air Recorder’ at the output of master control, keeping recordings for 30-90 days is insufficient,” said Ted Korte, COO of Qligent, a Melbourne, Fla.-based developer of broadcast monitoring and QoE technology. “More and more functions are either being outsourced or moved closer to the end user, and so should compliance monitoring. Having a number of monitoring points covering each of the delivery platforms, is a much more accurate representation of an audience and thus creates a more comprehensive compliance verification. Since new regulations are likely to evolve it is also a good practice to record all the associated metadata with the media and to record everything for extended periods of time to allow post verification analysis and audits.”

ORIGINS IN CALM

One of the key components of compliance monitoring is that audio levels are consistent as required by the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act, which barred TV commercials—as well as other content—from increasing in volume at commercial breaks. Since the introduction of CALM it has been mostly “all quiet” on the audio front as broadcasters have mostly complied, but new technologies would bring up similar issues.

“Commercial loudness has been an issue since the 1980s, but finally modern audio systems really made it noticeable,” said William T. Hayes, director of engineering for Iowa Public Television and president of the IEEE Broadcast Technology Society. “Today the issue is how people consume content in other ways, and these services don’t follow the rules set in place by CALM. The major streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Video are pretty good, but then you can instantly tell that YouTube videos and others aren’t CALM-compliant.”

For audio compliance, self-regulation could be one solution, but new technology at the consumer level might also solve the issue.

“The reality is that everyone who has a service that provides video and audio knows they need to do something,” Hayes added. “But self-regulating may not solve all the issues. However, smart TVs could be made to automatically adjust volume to a consistent level.”

FULL STREAM AHEAD

In a recently released white paper, Mediaproxy, a provider of compliance, monitoring and analysis technology noted that as the industry has to deal with an increasing number of transmission platforms that span from traditional broadcasts to OTT logging and monitoring paradigms have also shifted.

“It’s become apparent that with an increase in scale, the tools have to extend in versatility. Making sure that the right content is transmitted at the right place and time across the different outputs is paramount. Loggers are hence expected to have advanced video analysis features like content and source matching” said Erik Otto, Mediaproxy president. "However, this also means that OTT providers will have to address challenges, as streaming doesn’t fit in very well with traditional compliance monitoring."

“Linear and nonlinear streaming is very different as to how it is delivered and consumed, making end-to-end visibility and control much more complex,” said Korte at Qligent. “Streaming is changing all the usual points of reference such as primetime, demographics, DMAs, and even the definition of ‘live’.’’ All this new technology and opportunity will also invite new regulations regarding privacy and data protection [end users], fraud [i.e. advertising], piracy [i.e. rights], ratings [social media], etc. from multiple government agencies as well as vendor/service provider SLAs.”

Yet, unlike in a traditional broadcast, which typically has one version of content delivered to all viewers and with differences often the result of local market requirements, OTT could enable content providers to deliver innumerable discrete streams delivered to users—differentiated by region, device, preference or other factors.

“This same ‘one-to-one’ approach can be applied to compliance monitoring systems, too,” added Sidi. “In addition to monitoring the entire cloud workflow, it can check streams by region or other critical factors.”

The downside for content providers is that these opportunities could require more work.

“Budgets haven’t gone up,” and companies are not hiring replacements when employees leave, according to Hiren Hindocha, CEO of Digital Nirvana. “However today’s new compliance monitoring tools can address those requirements.”

AI AND MACHINE LEARNING

Technology could certainly play a major role in this evolution of monitoring and logging, and could take advantage of artificial intelligence or machine learning, which could more easily manage the influx of “Big Data” that is created at a near constant rate.

“The big trend is mixing technical compliance with content compliance,” said ENCO’s Frommert. “The way we see things, the loggers are producing enormous amounts of video data. This ‘Big Data’ is just sitting there for months until it is deleted and replaced by newer data, with no effective use. The use of Big Data technologies is gradually enriching the value of these video records and adding a number of useful functions.”

This, in turn could change compliance monitoring from something required and which can be costly, into a potential revenue stream instead.

Compliance tools are required by law, and thus become an expense for broadcasters, Hayes said, who added that today, AI can turn compliance into a value add instead.

“AI can analyze your audio for CALM compliance, but could also make it easier to ensure that closed captioning makes sense, including that the right version of a word is used. But it can also turn it into a profit center as it becomes a service, whether that is a tool for viewers to find content, or for those in commercial broadcasting so that advertisers and vendors can track their results.”

This could include automated detection of commercial ad spots, which could replace what has been a manually intensive work.

“This technology [AI] can scan many channels and provide very accurate affidavit reports on the number of ad spots,” added Frommert. “Similarly, the ads watching technology can also analyze competing channels and provide comparisons channel to channel on the number of ads sold and aired.”

AI could further automatically create captions and subtitles via speech recognition technology, while also utilizing rich metadata for searching and organizing the vast archives of video, which are stored on-premise or in the cloud.

“This can make it easier for people to find the content they want, as it is needs to be available to whomsoever, whenever they want it,” said Hindocha. “Metadata is really ripe for AI and machine learning, as it can help the viewer decide whether they want to consume that content. Metadata, as a side of the logging, helps you slice and dice the variety of content that is out there.”

AYLESBURY, ENGLAND—TMD and Mediaproxy have put their heads together to come up with a new integrated content management workflow system. As a result of this collaboration, content captured by Mediaproxy’s LogServer can now be automatically added to the TMD Mediaflex-UMS database.

The collaboration results in Mediaflex-UMS driven software-defined workflows that will utilize Mediaproxy recorded content and metadata. Mediaflex users will be able to locate Mediaproxy assets by searching Mediaflex.

The content typically available as part of this integration, according to TMD and Mediaproxy, is off air program recordings and metadata.

PHOENIX—KPNX, an NBC affiliate in Arizona, is getting into business with Mediaproxy by installing its LogServer software system to assist with digital TV services.

The LogServer unit will capture and log all of KPNX’s broadcast content to ensure full broadcast compliance as it pertains to quality of service, loudness and closed captioning. KPNX has also brought in Mediaproxy’s LogPlayer client software and Monwall multiviewer for monitoring broadcast video and ATSC transport streams. The software-based Monwall provides flexible multiviewer panels that combine both live video and TS metadata for compliance, real-time analysis and quality of service monitoring.

KPNX manages Channel 12, 12 News Weather and the Justice Network for the greater Phoenix area.

SPOKANE, WASH.—Cowles Company manages KHQ, KNDU, KNDO, KULR and KFBB TV stations across Montana and Washington, and to handle the monitoring and logging of these stations Cowles has enlisted the help of Mediaproxy.

Cowles is using Mediaproxy’s LogServer system to capture, log and monitor 14 of its TV channels over IP. When logged and stored in a proxy format, content can be retrieved for review using the intuitive MediaProxy LogPlayer.

FORT WAYNE, IND.—Mediaproxy’s LogServer compliance logging and monitoring system is getting some use in the Fort Wayne, Ind., area after PBS39, Fort Wayne's public television station, recently purchased the platform.

LogServer is a server-based software for capturing and recording live content for real-time monitoring and logging for post-broadcast compliance reviews. PBS39 uses LogServer to manage compliance logging and broadcast monitoring for all of its channels over terrestrial, cable and to mobile apps.

PBS39 is currently using the LogServer for its main channel and three additional channels—PBS 39 Kids, Create TV and 39 Explore.

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA—Mark Horchler will be getting an office in Mediaproxy’s Melbourne office as the company has named him its new senior vice president of marketing.

TV TECHNOLOGY: What do you anticipate as significant trends at the 2017 NAB Show?

ERIK OTTO: Software and IP technology continues to transform the television industry resulting in an increased convergence between traditional TV and OTT video. We are seeing the lines between TV and OTT being increasingly blurred as consumers continually switch between different viewing devices. In order to maintain high levels of service quality means that traditional TV and OTT services need to be managed and monitored concurrently.

Whereas specific broadcast functions have traditionally been contained within dedicated areas such as studios, master control rooms, and playout centers, there is a growing demand for software-based solutions that enable broadcast engineers and television executives to access any critical broadcast function from any location. As with other industries, increased workforce mobility and flexibility is becoming a reality through software running in the cloud and on mobile devices.

TVT: What will be your most important product news?

OTTO: We are releasing a major update to our LogServer software suite to support multiscreen monitoring, analysis and compliance TS and video over IP sources. By adding support for more ABR profiles, LogServer users can now view and monitor their traditional linear broadcast monitoring alongside OTT streams.

LogServer now includes support for newer broadcast standards such as HEVC, 4K UHD, and SMPTE-2022-6. Our advanced LogServer and Monwall data monitoring panels provide real-time analysis and monitoring of TS sections, ETR290 ASI priority events, closed captions, subtitles, and loudness.
