ESPN is reporting that for the third year in a row the ESPN Men’s Tournament Challenge, the most popular college basketball bracket game for the NCAA men’s basketball championship, has set a new all-time record with 24.4 million completed brackets before the start of the tournament on March 20. That was up 10% compared to last year’s record of 22.6 million.

At the peak period of entries shortly before the start of the first game on Thursday March 20, ESPN Tournament Challenge registered more than 709 brackets per second. Overall, more than 1.1 billion picks were made.

The most popular pick to win the men’s championship is Duke with 25% of all brackets picking the Blue Devils. Florida is the second most-picked to win the final with 21%. More fans chose Duke, Florida, Auburn, and Houston to reach the Final Four than any other combination of teams, ESPN reported.

ESPN Tournament Challenge allows fans to track in real-time the number of perfect brackets remaining in both men’s and women’s Tournament Challenge games with the Perfect Bracket Tracker. The tool also provides insight on the games that have had, and could potentially have, the most impact on perfect brackets.

The ESPN Women’s Tournament Challenge continued to accept brackets until just prior to tip-off of the first game on March 21 in the Round of 64 between No. 6 Michigan and the No. 11 play-in winner Iowa State in the Birmingham 3 Regional at 11:30 a.m. ET on ESPN2. ESPN is the exclusive home to the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship.

The cable category was lifted in part by sports, which was up 43% in March, driven largely by college basketball viewership.

Nielsen also reported that games in the women's NCAA tournament had a more meaningful impact on viewership compared with previous years, with the Round 2 matchup between Iowa and West Virginia ranking as the No. 7 cable telecast in March with 4.9 million viewers on ESPN.

Also giving cable a boost this month was State of the Union coverage on cable news networks. The March 7 event drew 32.2 million viewers in total (14.1 million on cable networks), and six of this month's top 10 cable telecasts were related to it.

But viewed from a longer term perspective, year over year, the cable category saw a 10% decline in usage and it lost 2.8 share points.

The streaming category also exhibited minimal impact compared with last month, falling just 1% which resulted in a 38.5% share of TV (+0.8 percentage points) in March. YouTube ended the month with another record, accounting for 9.7% of total TV usage in March (+0.4 pt.) — the largest share for a streaming service to date in The Gauge. Meanwhile, Netflix climbed to 8.1% of TV (+0.3 pt.), boosted by three of this month's top streaming originals: Love is Blind, The Gentleman, and Avatar: The Last Airbender, which combined for nearly 15 million viewing minutes in the March interval.

Continuing a longer-term shift towards streaming, Nielsen reported that streaming viewership was up 12% this month versus one year ago, and the category has added 4.4 share points (vs. 34.1% in March 2023).

The broadcast category exhibited the largest decline across viewing categories in March, falling 6% vs. February to account for 22.5% of TV (-0.8 pt.). On a yearly basis, broadcast viewing has declined 4% and has lost 0.7 share point.

Despite having or tying for the smallest share of TV in The Gauge since the report's inception, the broadcast category has shown notable resilience over time. When the report debuted in May 2021, broadcast sat at 25.4% of TV, while cable and streaming accounted for 39.5% and 26.2% of TV, respectively.

Almost 36 months later, the broadcast category has lost just 2.9 share points compared with 11.2 points given up by cable, and the streaming category has gained over 12 points.

While the cable category has shown the largest decline over that time, the core businesses that make up the category may be shifting along with consumers. None of the now-reported FAST channel providers (PlutoTV, The Roku Channel and TubiTV) had yet exceeded the 1.0% reportability threshold at the time of the first report. Now those services combine for 3.7 share points, with a considerable portion of the titles being fueled by cable network content, the report found.
</dc:content>

Given the fragmentation in TV viewing today, this is an incredibly powerful tool for advertisers.”

The researchers also stressed that March Madness advertising is valuable in securing incremental viewership, as 50% of households reached by March Madness programming are uniquely incremental to the campaign. This means half of the audience reached with March Madness would not have otherwise been reached by the TV campaigns analyzed for 2022.

Other key highlights from the study include:

March Madness ads reach nearly 2.5x more households per commercial than the average program.

Streaming viewership on networks airing March Madness increases 86% during the tournament (versus the prior period).

67% (two in three) of businesses tune into games during the first and second rounds of the tournament.

41% of March Madness viewing is done with another person.

Advertisers that include March Madness in their campaigns receive as much as 87% greater reach than those that do not.

March Madness advertising has the power to reach light TV viewing households – with this programming being 55% more likely to be viewed by this hard-to-reach audience.

“With March Madness, advertisers are reaching viewers who would not otherwise be seeing TV advertising,” added Flood. “Incremental reach is on everyone’s mind in 2023, and this event provides an opportunity to reach audiences more than twice as efficiently as an average ad. This is an opportunity that can benefit advertisers of all sizes.”

The full findings are available here.
</dc:content>

The updated platform experience will include the debut of a new multigame viewing feature across select connected devices.

NCAA March Madness Live is managed by Turner Sports in partnership with the NCAA and CBS Sports and is available to download across 18 mobile and connected devices including Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Xbox, Google TV and select LG Smart TV devices.

New this year is a Multi-Game Viewing option, which allows fans to watch up to two games simultaneously, providing users a live look-in to a second game without audio. Multigame viewing is available on Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Google TV, and Xbox One. This feature will join the picture-in-picture option (available on mobile, desktop and tablet), which allows users to navigate through the MML app while watching a game in real-time.

NCAA March Madness Live will also introduce Starting Lineup Challenge, a new interactive experience, developed in partnership with SharpLink Gaming. To play, fans are given a budget to pick a lineup of five teams before the start of the Tournament. Those teams then gain value by winning games and conversely stop gaining value when they lose. After every round, users can buy and sell teams to tweak their lineups or hold the teams they currently own to earn loyalty points. At the end of the Tournament, the lineup with the highest value wins.

Capital One NCAA March Madness Men’s Bracket Challenge will add a new feature that reminds users of the outcomes they predicted so that they know which results to root for in anticipation of winning their Bracket Challenge.

NCAA March Madness Live will once again feature Matchup Analysis, allowing fans to choose from over 20 stats to personalize their bracket picking experience as part of Bracket IQ presented by Invesco QQQ. Fans will also gain extra insight with Path to the Championship, which lets fans calculate possible Tournament outcomes based on remaining games in the bracket, giving users a visualization of their best possible ranking. Path to the Championship will be available at the start of "Sweet Sixteen."

Fast Break presented by AT&T 5G and Nissan, will now feature enhanced analytics powered by Second Spectrum, part of the Genius Sports family, that will breakdown gameplay stats and augment video with graphic overlays detailing the most critical data points. This live, whip-around coverage will also offer quick turnaround highlights, real-time analysis by industry stars, social reaction and commentary for all games.

Game Center, the central hub of NCAA March Madness Live, will be featured on all connected devices and include Condensed Games presented by AT&T 5G to spotlight the most important moments of live game action. To fuel engagement and connection with users, Game Center will feature the Madness Feed, powered by LiveLike, to offer Tournament updates, interactive polls and quizzes. The feed will be updated during the busiest rounds of the Tournament to create a unique experience alongside video viewing.

Turner Sports and CBS Sports will provide live coverage of all 67 games from the 2022 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship on TBS, CBS, TNT and truTV, and via NCAA March Madness Live. Additionally, Turner Sports’ Bleacher Report and CBS Sports will provide coverage of the games across their respective social media platforms and apps, redirecting fans to watch games live on NCAA March Madness Live and the four networks.

Fans can also access all Tournament games via live streaming on TBS, CBS, TNT and truTV’s digital platforms, as well as participating TV provider websites and apps. The CBS telecast can be viewed via the web and on mobile devices with no authentication required and via Paramount+ on connected devices.
</dc:content>

NCAA March Madness Live—the live streaming and second screen destination for the NCAA Men’s Tournament—is offering several new ways to watch and engage with all the action from the 2022 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship this year.

ATLANTA—March Madness, the NCAA’s annual men’s basketball tournament, will officially tip off March 17, and Turner Sports and the NCAA have rolled out a slew of new features for its NCAA March Madness Live streaming app to give fans as much of the action as they can take.

First, March Madness Live will be available across 17 platforms this year, including Google Assistant for the first time, giving fans direct access to live coverage of tournament games.

As far as the new features, the highlight is a Multigame option added to Amazon Fire TV and Android TV platforms that will enable fans to watch simultaneous live coverage of two games during certain windows. Previously, this option had only been available on Apple TV. Another live video addition is the new Catch-Up video powered by AT&T TV, which will provide a summary of key plays or moments that occurred before a viewer started watching the live stream coverage.

March Madness Live will also now help viewers keep track of their bracket predictions during live game coverage. Through either the Watch Page, Gamecenter or with push notifications, viewers can be reminded of the outcomes they predicted during games. In Gamecenter, users can also follow their Bracket Challenge group leaderboards, including access to private chats with other group participants.

For the third consecutive year there will also be the Fast Break feature, providing live tournament action from a single viewing location via “whip-around” coverage with quick turnaround highlights, real-time analysis, social reaction and commentary for all games. Fast Break will be available during the first two rounds of the tournament (March 19-22).

Additional features for the March Madness Live streaming app includes Path to Championship analysis of brackets; Matchup Analysis to help users personalize their bracket picks based on more than 20 stat categories; close-game alerts; live game scoring; and direct access to live radio broadcasts, courtesy of Westwood One, for all 67 games.

Fans can access Turner Sports and CBS Sports’ coverage of all 67 games through CBS web and mobile platforms, as well as live on traditional TV and digital platforms for TBS, CBS, TNT and truTV.
