                                <p><strong>Cypress, CA, October 21, 2019 –</strong> With its live <a href="https://vimeo.com/295819713">WALLCAST® simulcasts</a> and concert auditorium surrounded by an immersive projection system, the Miami-based <a href="https://www.nws.edu/">New World Symphony</a> (NWS) features unprecedented integration of technology into its educational, rehearsal, and performance spaces. The New World Symphony prepares graduates of top music schools for leadership roles in orchestras and ensembles around the world. It combines teaching and technical innovation in a way that brings classical music into the 21 century and makes the music accessible to everyone.</p><p>When the leaders of NWS were looking to upgrade the already top-of-the-line audio and video infrastructure within the New World Center, their Frank Gehry-designed campus three years ago, they were set on a single-link 12G infrastructure as the backbone for the overall upgrade. They met with representatives from the Miami office of FOR-A to discuss FOR-A’s range of 12G 4K/UHD products.</p><p>“We determined early on that our specific needs would be best served by designing our new 4K/UHD upgrade project around a single-cable 12G infrastructure,” explained Clyde Scott, Director of Video Production, New World Symphony. “Most options were quad-link and 4K IP, but FOR-A was the only manufacturer to make a single-link 12G switcher large enough for our purposes. We demoed the switcher and were impressed with its capabilities and ease of use.”</p><p>After that, FOR-A’s Director of Latin Region Sales, Mario Rodriguez and Product Specialist Bob Peterson worked closely with NWS to identify several other key pieces of equipment in the company’s suite of 12G products that would work well in the new installation, including: a large 12G router, production servers, and terminal gear.</p><p>After a highly competitive review, NWS went all in with <a href="https://www.for-a.com/" data-original-url="http://www.for-a.com/">FOR-A</a>, purchasing: a 4K/UHD <a href="https://www.for-a.com/products/professional/switcher_p.html">production switcher</a>, two routing switchers, 19 signal processors, integrated control software, a multi-viewer, four 12G/SDI servers, two <a href="https://www.for-a.com/products/classx/">12G graphics systems</a>, and nine modular universal system frames.</p><p>Among the FOR-A products selected is the recently introduced 3 M/E HANABI HVS-6000 <a href="https://www.for-a.com/products/hvs6000/">12G-SDI production switcher</a>Offering 12G-SDI capability on all inputs and outputs, the 3 M/E HANABI HVS-6000 uses a single cable link. Video signals are processed throughout as a single image. The HVS-6000 is a 12 RU switcher, with a maximum of 80 inputs/32 outputs or 64 inputs/48 outputs. It also offers frame synchronization, frame buffer, 3D DVE, and 4 keyers per M/E with DVE function + 4 DSKs. The switcher has an optional board-mounting SFP connector that supports an IP interface.</p><p>In addition to the HANABI main switcher panel, NWS is integrating a smaller 12-button HVS-2120ROU switcher panel into a remote control room for use with the main electronics for simultaneous use of the HANABI resources in multiple locations.</p><p>“We’re thrilled to support the New World Symphony in its incredible mission to enrich the Miami community with its classical music offerings and the organization’s progressive approach to the use of technology for education and performance,” said Rodriguez of FOR-A. “Everything at the New World Center is first class. We’re confident that our equipment will more than meet their expectations, and we look forward to providing New World Symphony with our latest technology for many years to come.”</p><p>NWS presents approximately 70 performances each year, many of which include immersive projections and 12 of which are presented as live simulcasts on the 7,000 square foot exterior projection façade of its New World Center building (WALLCAST® Concerts). Inside, the concert auditorium also features a large complement of theatrical lighting, ten robotic 4K cameras and a full broadcast-style control booth, top-of-the-line audio recording and sound reinforcement equipment.                                 <p>As the IP revolution continues to transform media and broadcast and deliver greater efficiencies and flexibility, prompting will be a key beneficiary, especially when it comes to smooth, instant failover in the event of an equipment glitch. In this article, we’ll look at the impact of IP networks on prompting redundancy and reliability.</p><p>Teleprompting is the unsung hero in the broadcast chain – a critical essential, to be sure, but one that’s often taken for granted until it doesn’t work. As one of our customers said once, “Prompting is one of the last things that broadcasters think of, but it’s the first thing that’s missed when it doesn’t operate properly.”</p><p>As the IP revolution continues to transform media and broadcast and deliver greater efficiencies and flexibility, prompting will be a key beneficiary, especially when it comes to smooth, instant failover in the event of an equipment glitch. In this article, we’ll look at the impact of IP networks on prompting redundancy and reliability.</p><p><strong>Room for improvement</strong></p><p>To appreciate what’s at stake with prompting reliability, consider the talent’s position. For a news anchor or other media personality, there are fewer worse nightmares than a prompter that stops working on air and a script that disappears mid-read. Pre-IP, getting things going again has been primarily a manual and delay-filled process often requiring engineering intervention.</p><p>Traditional prompting systems rely on USB, serial, or video cables to connect the controllers to a local prompting engine and video connections to deliver the prompting output to a traditional on-camera teleprompter monitor. For critical live productions, even the most resilient of these systems requires a second, completely redundant computer and video generation unit running all of the same settings as the main unit, such as the presenter’s choice of font sizes, background colours, newsroom connections, loaded rundowns, or controller profiles. In the event of a problem on the main prompting computer, an operator has to manually fail over to the second box using an A/B switch.</p><figure class="van-image-figure pull-" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="v5nFeUvUNuGjYqpfafoxNB" name="" alt="Primary Application" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/v5nFeUvUNuGjYqpfafoxNB.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/v5nFeUvUNuGjYqpfafoxNB.jpg" align="" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class="pull-"></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class="pull-"><span class="caption-text">Primary Application </span></figcaption></figure><p>Since the two systems aren’t automatically synchronised, the operator has to manually locate the correct place in the script on the redundant system. Controllers also have to be duplicated or separately switched with a second A/B switch, and the switchover of the video causes the prompting monitors to lose their input and cycle for a signal, creating further delay. In the meantime, the talent is forced to improvise while enduring second after appalling second of missing script.</p><p><strong>IP networks: built-in redundancy</strong></p><p>In contrast, an IP-based prompting workflow creates connectivity without requiring point-to-point connections, and therefore delivers core redundancy. At the prompting application level, this enables a full-redundancy fail-safe by which a mirrored PC, paired with the main application, can seamlessly take over if the first PC/application fails — with automatic synchronization of script position, individual users’ settings, controllers, newsroom connections, teleprompters, etc. When the first application recovers, it drops into standby mode, at the ready should the active PC fail.</p><figure class="van-image-figure pull-" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="4qTZJ2Cy6v4EHG9ZCcZsB3" name="" alt="Mirror application automatically synchronizes with the primary application to provide seamless fail-safe" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/4qTZJ2Cy6v4EHG9ZCcZsB3.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/4qTZJ2Cy6v4EHG9ZCcZsB3.jpg" align="" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class="pull-"></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class="pull-"><span class="caption-text">Mirror application automatically synchronizes with the primary application to provide seamless fail-safe </span></figcaption></figure><p>Since all elements of the prompting system are networked devices and therefore not physically connected to each other, the existing controller(s) can continue working with prompts from the backup machine, wherever it is in the world. Because the switch from the host PC to the backup is immediate, the on-air talent might notice nothing more than a fractional, millisecond pause in the scroll speed – if he or she notices anything at all.</p><p><strong>A critical element: data-only transport</strong></p><p>Delivering and displaying the video script on the prompting monitors is another area that is vastly improved in an IP-based workflow. Traditional prompting systems send a full video feed to the monitor via a video cable; likewise, some approaches to IP prompting send the full video signal over the network. While video over IP might work well for many other types of IP media deployments, it’s not ideal for prompting because of bandwidth issues (requiring compression, encoding and decoding) and the potential for latency and synchronisation problems.</p><p>A better approach – and one more conducive to reliability – is for the prompting software to send small unicast data packets instead of the full video feed. With only small amounts of data sent over the IP network, every monitor can remain in constant communication with the master application to ensure reliable synchronisation and centralised management. Rather than all monitors relying on a single video stream from a video generator – a single point of failure – each monitor on the network renders its own script video. The prompt operator can see at a glance the status of all devices, be they scroll controllers or on camera monitors, and so can tell immediately if there is any issue.</p><p><br/><strong>Building redundancy into an IP-based prompting network</strong></p><p>So what are the vital elements of an IP prompting system that delivers these levels of reliability? First and foremost, the solution requires software that offers a fully synchronised redundancy system with mirror functionality. (At this writing, WinPlus-IP from Autoscript is the only software to offer these capabilities.) Also critical are prompting monitors with built-in intelligent scroll technology that enables them to generate a script independently, based on the data packets sent over the IP network. The benefit of this comes into focus with a prompting workflow that enables broadcast operations to collaborate across geographies and allocate resources cost-effectively. Since the software-based prompting elements are connected on a network rather than running on local hardware, the backup PC could be in a different time zone that isn’t operational. As any operator can prompt to any teleprompter on the network, an operator in New York can control the script, speed, and other prompting attributes of a prompter in London and instantly switch control to an operator in Doha in the event of a resource issue, such as operator illness.</p><p>It all comes back to the talent. In the final analysis, the anchor or other on-air personality doesn’t care how the scripts are delivered; he or she just wants to be able to read the text at a comfortable and adjustable pace, with no hiccups or interruptions. For an IP-based teleprompting solution, the right built-in intelligence creates failsafe reliability and a win-win situation: talent is enabled, rather than hindered, by the technology, and the broadcast operation is able to take maximum advantage of IP’s connectivity, flexibility, ease of use, and cost efficiencies.</p>

                                <p><strong>SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS</strong>— The importance of bass managing control room speakers was made crystal clear to me in May 2004, during the first game of the NBA Western Conference Finals. The audio control room for the event was the first 5.1 room my team had ever built and, in addition to mixing the studio show and wraparound elements in surround, we were receiving a full 5.1 mix from the mobile unit parked at the arena.<br/></p><figure class="van-image-figure pull-" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="4R2eBTZDgZr4mjsoSXgq2Q" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/4R2eBTZDgZr4mjsoSXgq2Q.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/4R2eBTZDgZr4mjsoSXgq2Q.jpg" align="" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class="pull-"></p></div></div></figure><p><em>Audio Design Labs’ Audio Management Controller</em><br/>Everything was going well right up to the moment we mixed in audio from the site, which was when we discovered that effects microphones inside the venue were picking up low-frequency energy that was not there before the game started. Unfortunately, this low-frequency content was overwhelming the mix and driving our dynamics processing nuts.<br/><br/>The mix engineer in the truck could not hear the problem and it took us a little while to figure out that the main speakers in the truck were not reproducing those low frequencies because they were each fed directly from a console monitor output. This meant that none of the low-frequency content from the main channels was being sent to the subwoofer where it could have been reproduced.<br/><br/>In a large audio mix room with good acoustics, thick walls and full-range speakers, this would be no problem, but mixing audio in a remote truck is essentially mixing in the polar opposite of that environment. Had the truck speakers been bass-managed, the mix engineer in the truck would have corrected the problem immediately without getting a call from the studio control room.<br/><br/><strong>REPRODUCING ALL FREQUENCIES</strong><br/>Bass management ensures the speaker system can reproduce all frequencies of content in the mix so the engineer can actually hear what is going on. Oddly, making this happen seems to have become more difficult as the need for it has increased. Audio control rooms used to have large speakers that could reproduce frequencies below 80 Hz, even though NTSC television had a limited frequency response of around 50 Hz–15 kHz and all of about 40 dB of dynamic range on a good day.<br/></p><figure class="van-image-figure pull-" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="tXWJfp6ahFdV7CqkTSYYbA" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/tXWJfp6ahFdV7CqkTSYYbA.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/tXWJfp6ahFdV7CqkTSYYbA.jpg" align="" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class="pull-"></p></div></div></figure><p><em>Nuendo Bass Manager plug-in</em><br/>Mixing for analog television meant rolling off and filtering high and low frequencies, carefully controlling levels with limiters and compressors, and trying not to trigger any processing downstream that would destroy the mix. NTSC became ATSC and we suddenly had five audio channels with 20 Hz–20 kHz frequency response, 100+ dB of dynamic range and a band-limited low frequency effects (LFE) channel that requires its own speaker.<br/><br/>Unfortunately, the installation of subwoofers did not make up for the fact that mix rooms and their main speakers were shrinking. It seems that as soon as we started creating content with significant low-frequency energy, many facilities stopped installing control room speakers capable of letting us hear it, or building rooms with enough space in them to handle that energy.<br/><br/>The smaller near-field speakers found in control rooms now are much less likely to be able to adequately reproduce low frequencies below 80 Hz properly, if at all, and it is difficult for their frequency response to remain linear at lower frequencies. This creates a real problem for the mix engineer since audio that cannot be heard in the control room will still make it to the home. Worse still is the fact that practically all home surround systems bass-manage automatically, sometimes to make up for the fact that their main speakers are small.<br/><br/>At the creation end of the chain, bass managing means redirecting frequencies that cannot be reproduced by the five main speakers into the subwoofer. Subs get a bad rap as just being there to make things shake, but a properly placed and set-up subwoofer can actually smooth out low-frequency problems in small rooms and, when used for bass management, allows smaller speakers to operate more efficiently because they aren’t wasting power trying to reproduce frequencies they weren’t designed for.<br/><br/>Subwoofer speakers are also necessary for proper reproduction of the point one (.1) LFE channel, which was designed specifically to make sure the low-frequency portions of audio effects are adequately represented. Bass management never adds content to the LFE channel, but it does redirect low-frequency content from the main channels into the subwoofer along with it.<br/></p><figure class="van-image-figure pull-" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="qN3ki4sZWj8UMM98gExi5f" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/qN3ki4sZWj8UMM98gExi5f.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/qN3ki4sZWj8UMM98gExi5f.jpg" align="" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class="pull-"></p></div></div></figure><p><em>Genelec PD7070A15 subwoofer connectors</em><br/><strong>IMPLEMENTING BASS MANAGEMENT</strong><br/>Actually implementing bass management is generally not difficult, but can be expensive. The speaker system we used for Western Conference Finals had bass-management features built into the subwoofer, so changing our control room and mobile unit setups meant running the monitor channels to the subwoofer first, then to their respective speakers.<br/><br/>Speaker systems without this feature require a monitor controller or audio console monitoring section with built-in bass management that then feeds the speakers. There are also a number of software options available, either included in digital audio workstation monitoring sections or as plug-ins.<br/><br/>No matter the method, the principle is the same. A low-frequency crossover point is selected—usually 80 Hz—and audio below that frequency is redirected from the main monitor channels to the subwoofer. This ensures that low-frequency content makes its way to a speaker that is capable of reproducing it. Since sound becomes omnidirectional as we reduce frequency it is more difficult (but not necessarily impossible) to pinpoint the source, so using one speaker for low-frequency content works fairly well.<br/><br/>Anyone mixing on speakers that are not gigantic, full-range monsters should give serious consideration to bass managing their speaker system if they really want to hear everything in the mix, especially if a subwoofer is already a part of that system. Those mixing in small rooms would also do well to assess whether bass managing their system along with proper subwoofer placement would help sort out some of the acoustic problems inherent in those spaces.<br/><br/><em>Jay Yeary is a broadcast engineer and consultant specializing in audio. Additionally, users can now zoom in and out with a sliding motion thanks to the new on-screen zoom bar.</p><p>The new version of the LIVE+ mobile app for iOS is now available for free download via the Apple App Store. Users must have a license to send live feeds and recorded or edited files to a server.</p>

With the Live+ Mobile App, videojournalists can use their smartphones’ built-in cameras and cellular connections to transmit live video.</p><p>“Although we still rely on traditional microwave and OB vans, the Dejero technology has increased the mobility of our news teams and enabled them to go live immediately, rather than waiting for the vehicle to arrive,” said Ewerton Maciel, director of technology at TV TEM.</p>
