The Society of Broadcast Engineers has bestowed its highest membership level, that of Fellow, on Jerry Massey, the veteran TV and radio engineer who most recently served as SBE’s national president.

Candidates are nominated by their peers; there have been 78 Fellows named since SBE was founded five decades ago. The society elevated Massey at its meeting in Las Vegas during the NAB Show, and he will be recognized during the National Awards Dinner in October in Boston.

Massey is director of technical operations for Entercom Greenville Spartanburg (South Carolina). His career in broadcasting began as an engineer at WFBC(TV) in 1973, but SBE notes that his experience in communications began in the Air Force. He has been a transmitter engineer, director of engineering and chief engineer for stations WFBC(AM/FM), with the additional Greenville stations added to his responsibilities through acquisitions and mergers.

Massey has served on the SBE board and as the society’s president, VP and treasurer. He remains active in Chapter 86 Greenville Area where he is its chair. His SBE commitment is further captured by the string of initials after his name: CPBE, 8-VSB, AMD, DRB, CBNT.

Current President Jim Leifer said Massey “demonstrates the outstanding qualifications of broadcast engineers worthy of the society’s highest member grade. His devotion to excellence in himself, in others and from the SBE is unmatched.”

INDIANAPOLIS—While Americans will head to the polls in November, the Society of Broadcast Engineers has already counted the votes for its national board of directors, and among the results is the re-election of Jerry Massey as the society’s president. Massey, the regional technical operations director, Southeast for Entercom Communications and director of technical operations, MIS, sustainability, for Entercom Greenville, will once again serve a one-year term that will begin on Oct. 27.

Others elected to one-year terms on the board include Jim Leifer, director of engineering and IT for iHeartMedia/South Florida, as vice president; Tim Anderson, manager of business and product development, radio transmission at GatesAir, as secretary; and Andrea Cummins, managing partner, AC Video Solutions, as treasurer.

A group of individuals were also selected to serve two-year terms on the board, also set to begin Oct. 27. They include: Jim Bernier, senior director, broadcasting engineering, Turner Entertainment Networks; Kirk Harnack, director of multimedia education, Telos Alliance; Wayne Pecena, director of engineering at Texas A&M University’s KAMU FM & TV; Marcelo Sanchez, director of broadcast operations and engineering, WFOR-TV/WBFS-TV; Mark Simpson, VP of eningeering, Townsquare Media; and Justin “JT” Tucker, regional director of engineering Southwest, Cumulus Media Charleston.

The newly elected officers and directors members will join have a remaining year on their terms and past president Joe Snelson.

The national board of directors of the SBE develop the organization’s policy and determines the program and services for its 5,100 members.

Those elected to serve on the board of directors for two years include Mark Fehlig, senior engineer, RF Spectrucm, Osborne Engineering; Michael Hendrickson, chief engineer, American Public Media Group; Ched Keiler, senior engineer, ISC/E Three; Jeff Keith, senior product development engineer, Wheatstone; Kevin Plumb, vice president, video/audio platform technologies, ESPN Technology; RJ Russell, vice president of engineer, Fox 29 Philadelphia.

The SBE national board of directors is responsible for the development of policy and determines the program and services the society provides to its members. All those elected will begin their terms Oct. 14 during the SBE Membership Meeting.
