Apple TV will be breaking new ground this Saturday, May 23, by streaming a special live Major League Soccer match captured exclusively on iPhone 17 Pro.

The streamer is billing the production as "the first time that iPhones will be used to capture the entirety of a major professional live sporting event broadcast."

The milestone broadcast will feature the LA Galaxy vs. Houston Dynamo FC streaming live on Apple TV from Dignity Health Sports Park during the final weekend of MLS play before the regular season pauses for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

iPhone 17 Pro will capture live footage throughout the match, including team warmups on the pitch, player introductions, in-net goal angles, and the atmosphere inside the stadium. A total of 15 iPhones will be used in the production.

With iPhone cameras positioned throughout the venue, Apple reported that the broadcast will deliver the pristine video quality fans expect, alongside dynamic new perspectives that bring viewers closer to the action, made possible by the small form factor of iPhone.

The move to capture an match entirely on iPhones builds on extensive work by Apple TV in using the smartphones for production.

Apple TV first incorporated iPhone into a live sports broadcast workflow during a September 2025 “Friday Night Baseball” matchup between the Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers.

During that game it used iPhone 17 Pro to capture select moments from the game and cinematic in-stadium footage. The milestone production earned recognition from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, which added an iPhone used in the broadcast to its permanent collection.

iPhone 17 Pro features three 48MP Fusion cameras, offering the equivalent of eight lenses in a compact form factor and pro-level video features like Apple Log 2 used for this weekend’s broadcast.

Following strong fan response to the “Friday Night Baseball” production, Apple expanded the use of iPhone across additional sports broadcasts, including the MLS Cup in 2025. It then further integrated the technology into the regular production rotation for “Friday Night Baseball” and MLS broadcasts throughout the 2026 season.

This Saturday’s LA Galaxy vs. Houston Dynamo FC match marks the next leap forward: the first live professional sporting event captured entirely on iPhone. Fans can see the results by tune in to Apple TV at 7:30 p.m. PT to see iPhone 17 Pro in action.

A notable illustration of just how influential mobile phones and Apple products have become in the production of video can be found on Fox Weather’s free ad-supported streaming television service, which launched a new segment series on July 13th entitled "Cruisin’ Across America".

Hosted by correspondent Robert Ray, the series takes viewers from coast-to-coast spotlighting areas that have been impacted by major weather events while spotlighting the local culture, food and communities.

Ray tells TV Tech that he produces all of his hits for Fox Weather (and this trip will be no exception) completely on his iPhone 14 Max Pro. He then edits them with Final Cut Pro, which is obviously another Apple product.

“These days, I do my visual storytelling using the iPhone14 Pro Max because the video and photo tools are beyond high quality for anything from live shots to full five-minute beauty pieces in national parks,” Ray explained in an email as he hit the road for the new series that will run from July 13 to 20. “The size and speed of the iPhone is just next level for the solo correspondent. I can’t tell you how many times during breaking news I was able to get into places with ease and get “the shots” because of how nimble and high quality the iPhone imagery is. Not to mention, people being interviewed appreciate the “no fuss scenario” and not being intimidated by a large crew.”

“There are many storytelling tools on the market, I’ve put the iPhone to the test thousands of times and it doesn’t fail,” he said, adding this tip to prospective iPhone creators: “Try the cinema mode when shooting video to separate your images from the rest, it’s amazing”

Kicking off in Jacksonville, Florida on Thursday, July 13th, Ray will be driving the Fox Weather Beast, a Ford F-250 used for storm chasing that is equipped with satellite gear that allows reporters to go live from anywhere regardless of conditions on the ground.

Additionally, he’ll be making stops in New Orleans, Louisiana, Houston, San Antonio and El Paso, Texas, Tucson and Tombstone, Arizona, before concluding his trip in Twentynine Palms, Cabazon and finally, Santa Monica, California on July 20th. He will visit a number of revered spots including Café du Monde, the San Antonio Riverwalk, Saguaro National Park and Joshua Tree National Park.

Ray is an Atlanta-based correspondent who has been with Fox Weather since the FAST channel launched in 2021. Last year, he traveled to 39 different states on assignment for FOX Weather.
TORONTO—LG Electronics will introduce what it says is the “world’s first” commercial TV set for hotels with support of Apple AirPlay and highlight the development during the HITEC Toronto hospitality technology show, June 26-29, at the Metro Toronto Convention Center.

With Apple AirPlay support, the set will make it possible for guests to share content in a seamless, secure way from their Apple iPhone or iPad with the TV in their rooms. AirPlay will be available to guests on LG Pro:Centric Smart Hotel TVs later this year at select properties, the company said.

“This is a major advancement for in-room entertainment in the travel and hospitality industry, and underscores how closely we are listening to the needs of consumers who increasingly demand simple access to their personal media options on the biggest screen, wherever they are,” said Michael Kosla, hospitality vice president at LG Business Solutions. “Hotels that offer this feature will have an immediate leg up with travelers who use Apple devices, boosting guest satisfaction while providing real differentiation from local competition.”

LG and Apple worked together to ensure connecting an iPhone or iPad is as simple as doing so at home. To connect securely, a guest scans a unique QR code. No login or password is required; nor is it necessary to download an app. The intent is to give guests an easy way to access personal entertainment from their Apple devices on the TVs in their rooms, LG said.

AirPlay allows guests to stream, control and share videos, photos, music and more from their iPhone or iPad to the smart, in-room LG TV so they can watch streaming services, such as Apple TV+, rehearse presentations and enjoy vacation photos, it said.

Apple announced earlier in June at its WWDC23 event that AirPlay will be available in hotels.

Hotel operators will be able to start offering AirPlay capability on LG smart hotel TVs later this year. AirPlay capability will be available on 2023 LG smart hotel TVs and on other recent LG models.

See LG Electronics at HITEC booth 1809.

More information is available on the company’s website.

BURBANK, Calif.—Alteon.io, a provider of cloud-based collaborative work tools, has launched its own iPhone app, creating a direct link between Apple’s camera technology and Alteon’s comprehensive content-management system.

Alteon users can use the free app to send footage from their iOS device directly to their Alteon Cloud account for secure storage and collaboration. Once the files are uploaded, remote team members—such as video editors—can immediately begin the post-production process. Alteon Cloud automatically transcodes all video files, and users can integrate the platform straight into Final Cut Pro using Alteon’s workflow extension.

The workflow enabled by the new app makes the creative process significantly faster and easier than using freemium file-transfer services saddled with limitations or shipping hard drives, according to the company. Alteon requires no special IT setup or maintenance and says the app is ideal for companies seeking more efficient cost-saving measures on their digital asset management, as well as independent creators looking to take the next step.

Designed for content creators of all kinds—including filmmakers, influencers, journalists and production companies—the Alteon app features an intuitive user interface for the benefit of non-tech-savvy users. At the same time, it has professional-grade power that runs in the background of your phone, enabling users to continue using their iPhone while uploading media to the cloud, the company said.

After content is uploaded to Alteon, creators can select files and folders to add custom, searchable meta tags; leave color-coded, time-stamped comments on video or audio files; share files and projects with anyone in the world; send secure screener links with optional password protection and expiration dates; and move finished projects into lower-cost storage tiers to save money.

“Influencers and independent content creators are shooting increasingly high-quality content on cutting-edge smartphones,” said Matt Cimaglia, CEO of Alteon. “We wanted to create the kind of infrastructure that matched their talent and drive, simplifying their workflows and continuing to democratize the creative industry.”

The Alteon.io app is now available for free on the App Store. Free accounts give users 10GB of storage and access to Alteon’s full suite of extensions and products, including its NLE integrations. Paid accounts start at $12/month and unlock the ability to share and join projects, purchase additional terabytes of storage and save money on lower-cost storage tiers.

For more information, visit alteon.io.

Smartphone cameras and DSLRs have been moving in opposite directions for the past few years, and image quality from phones will finally trump that of their single-lens reflex rivals by 2024, according to Sony.

As reported by Nikkei Japan, the President and CEO of Sony Semiconductor Solutions (SSS), Terushi Shimizu, told a business briefing that “we expect that still images [from smartphones] will exceed the image quality of single-lens reflex cameras within the next few years”.

Some fascinating slides presented during the briefing were even more specific, with one slide showing that, according to Sony, “still images are expected to exceed ILC [interchangeable lens camera] image quality” sometime during 2024.

Those are two slightly different claims, with ‘ILCs’ also including today’s mirrorless cameras, alongside the older DSLR tech that most camera manufacturers are now largely abandoning.

But the broader conclusion remains – far from hitting a tech ceiling, smartphones are expected to continue their imaging evolution and, for most people, make standalone cameras redundant.

So what tech will drive this continued rise of the best phone cameras? Sony points to a few factors, including “quantum saturation” and improvements to “AI processing”. Interestingly, Sony also expects the sensor size in “high-end model” phones to double by 2024.

The larger pixels on these sensors will, it says, allow phone makers to apply multi-frame processing that “realizes a new imaging experience”, including improved Super HDR modes and zooms that combine folded optics (as on the Sony Xperia 1 IV) with AI algorithms.

Sony also highlighted the development of its ‘two-layer transistor pixel technology’, which we heard about last year, which promises to drastically improve the dynamic range on phone cameras and help reduce low-light noise.

Similar advances are coming for video too, according to Sony’s presentation, with the higher read-out speeds of next-gen sensors supporting 8K video, multi-frame processing (including video HDR) and a general realization of “AI processing for video”. In other words, computational video techniques like Apple’s Cinematic Mode.

While it isn’t unusual for Sony to make bold predictions about a sector it’s heavily invested in, there does seem to be substance behind its predictions for the continued evolution of phone cameras at the expense of DSLRs and mirrorless cameras.

And that’s significant for all smartphones, because according to Statista, Sony has 42% of the global image sensor market for phones, while teardowns of the iPhone 13 Pro Max show that it uses three Sony IMX 7-series sensors.

Analysis: Phones Continue Their Meteoric Rise
Predictions about the demise of DSLR cameras are nothing new – without saying anything explicitly, Canon and Nikon have both admitted that DSLRs are a legacy format by discontinuing some models, such as the Nikon D3500, without replacing them. But Sony’s latest statements highlight that phone cameras still have a long way to go before they hit their tech ceiling.

The biggest advances in recent years have come in multi-frame processing, otherwise known as computational photography. But Sony was understandably keen to stress the role that new hardware will play in lifting phone cameras to new photographic heights.

Its prediction that the sensor sizes in high-end phones will double by 2024 is slightly surprising, given that this is limited by factors like lenses. For example, the Sony Xperia Pro-I became Sony’s first phone to have a 1-inch sensor last year, but its lens wasn’t able to project a large enough image circle to cover the whole of that sensor, so it could only take 12MP photos rather than the native 20MP resolution.

Perhaps more significant is Sony’s new stacked CMOS sensor with two-layer transistor pixels, which effectively exposes each pixel to twice as much light as a standard sensor. This sounds like a hardware advance that computational algorithms could definitely get their teeth stuck into in order to boost dynamic range and noise performance.

But given how good the latest phones are at photography, the most noticeable advances over the next few years are likely to be in video. Sony’s presentation highlighted this with references to multi-frame processing and its Edge AI platform, which promises to boost both video performance and support for augmented reality apps.

While DSLRs and mirrorless cameras will always have an audience among hobbyists and pros due to their handling, creative control, viewfinders and single-shot image quality, the kinds of advances outlined in Sony’s presentation show that the next few years are going to be a particularly exciting time for phone cameras.

This article originally appeared on techradar.com.

CUPERTINO, Calif.—Apple has unveiled its latest iPhone model, iPhone 12, which includes a bevy of new features for its camera and other options for improving users’ visual options.

The launching point for the iPhone 12’s visual capabilities is the A14 Bionic chip. Combined with a new image signal processor, A14 Bionic enables computational photography capabilities, including Apple ProRAW, a combination of Apple’s multiframe image processing and computational photography with a RAW format. This helps give users control over color, detail and dynamic range either through the iPhone natively or with other professional editing apps.

iPhone 12 enables an end-to-end experience for HDR video with Dolby Vision, up to 60 fps, Apple said. Dolby Vision grading is processed live and sustained during editing. Dolby Vision uses the Super Retina XDR display for contrast during capture and video playback. There is also support for AirPlay up to 4K Dolby Vision to external devices.

The iPhone 12 has two cameras: an Ultra Wide camera and a focal length Telephoto camera. The camera’s capabilities depend on whether it is the iPhone 12 Pro or iPhone 12 Pro Max version.

For the iPhone 12 Pro model, the Ultra Wide camera features a seven-element lens with a ƒ/1.6 aperture for 27% improved low-light performance in photo and video, per Apple. It also features a 120-degree field of view. The Telephoto camera has a 52mm focal length and an optical zoom range of 4x.

With the Pro max model, the Ultra Wide maintains the ƒ/1.6 aperture as well as a 47% larger sensor with 1.7μm pixels for a massive 87% improvement in low-light conditions. The Telephoto camera on this model has a 65mm focal length and 5x optical zoom range.

Other updates to the iPhone camera include improvements to Night mode, which has expanded to the TrueDepth and Ultra Wide cameras for a brighter picture. Additional features include Smart HDR 3 and a LiDAR Scanner for more realistic AR experiences.

In addition to the new camera features, Apple announced that the new iPhone will offer 5G service. By incorporating 5G, the iPhone will provide faster downloads and uploads, higher quality video streaming, FaceTime in high definition and more. Apple says that the iPhone 12 offers the broadest 5G coverage worldwide.

Apple has also updated the iPhone’s screen, switching from an LCD screen to OLED, which will allow for HDR video content that can reach up to 1,200 nits peak brightness.

The iPhone 12 starts at $799. Pre-ordering for both the Pro and Pro Max models begins on Oct. 16; the Pro will be widely available starting Oct. 23, while the Pro Max will be released starting Nov. 13.

For more information on the new iPhone 12 models, visit the Apple website.

Part 1

Journalism, worldwide, is in crisis. The bottom of its nosedive is not yet in sight. There are far more reporter layoffs than hires. Numerous technologies—the internet for one—and revenue-sucking behemoths—like the Google/Facebook duopoly—are shaking up legacy means of newsgathering and distribution. Digital disruption is harming journalism far more than benefiting.

Are ENG trucks becoming the linotype machines of the television news business?

News delivery via newsprint is on death watch. On the TV side, linear news delivery via the news show format is dying more slowly, but surely. A dwindling number of airwave, cable and satellite news consumers are willing to tune in at a certain time, at a certain place, on a certain screen and patiently wait to get the news and entertainment they really want. No wonder internet/IP-centric technologies like video-on-demand, next-gen, over-the top (OTT) television will soon overtake certain-time TV. No surprise that broadcast giants are scrambling to deliver their information and entertainment wares through OTT.

Even though most news publishers and broadcasters have long been online, many of their web offerings are merely rehashed versions of their offline products. Being there is not the same as succeeding there. “Digital first” has really meant “print first” and “video last.”

The “pivot to video” has been a colossal failure for most newspapers. “Those who pivoted to video didn’t really understand how expensive it is to produce high-quality video if you don’t have the infrastructure necessary to support it,” said Trevor Fellows, vice president of digital strategy for NBC.

Of course, television news outlets already had infrastructures in place to produce online video—no pivot needed. But, pretty much across the board, that infrastructure consists of outmoded, ponderous, expensive equipment and workflows. Bottom line: neither publishers nor broadcasters, generally, are very good at producing online news video.

Because the web is 24/7, its news outlets need cheaper, more mobile newsgathering equipment and much faster, less expensive video production systems and methods. Legacy television stations can’t come close to meeting a demand for online news by taking reporters off the street. Some are laid off, others converted to so-called "multimedia reporters" who spend more time in the newsroom than in the field. Resorting to shameless aggregating and clickbaiting isn’t working either. New technologies and workflows need to not just improve news distribution but also the quality and quantity of news content.

Deborah Turness

Happily, there are glimmers of hope. One is NBC’s bold, plug-pulling move in connection with its recent partnership with Euronews. At the 2018 IBC Show in Amsterdam Deborah Turness, the new president of NBC News International at NBC News, announced their discontinued reliance on ENG cameras and SNG trucks.

“We’ve cut the cord with cameras and trucks, and armed our network of 100 percent mobile journalists with iPhones, LiveU and Osmo,” she said about her remaking of Euronews. “I think we’re the only major news operation to only deploy iPhones having cut the cord with cameras and trucks.”

Euronews may not actually be the first major news outlet to turn fully to mobile journalism. Last year New Delhi Television (NDTV) switched to a video journalism model where its reporters shoot and edit news video using Samsung smartphones, a change the press referred to as mojoification.

But what Turness is doing is a much bigger deal. Where financially troubled NDTV acted more out of desperation— to cut costs—NBC is acting more out of inspiration—to add speed and mobility. If successful NBC could hasten journalism’s snail’s-pace shift from ENG to smartphone newsgathering, a transition that will become as big or bigger than the pivot from film to ENG in the late 70s and early 80s. That film-to-ENG transition not only facilitated live reporting, but also sophisticated editing of news packages. It’s now something smartphones can accomplish with teeny-weeny appliances and cellular connections at relatively minuscule cost.

Savings could and should be used to put more, quick-reacting boots on the ground. Turness refers to her “small army of journalists” equipped with mobile phones. She calls it “real-time journalism” where “you can go places and engage with people with a mobile phone in ways you cannot with a camera person and a big camera.” “You disrupt the oxygen in the room when you enter with a TV crew normally,” she told IBC attendees. “When you go in with an iPhone you are small and quite innocuous.”

Euronews has pulled the plug on their ENG/SNG trucks in favor of iPhone journalism.

Taking another swipe at conventional ENG/SNG live reporting she said iPhone journalism “is a more authentic, transparent way of storytelling. Our reporters are not perfectly coiffed, standing on a riser with a light and a cable plugged into a truck. They are on the move, they take you with them.”

Turness told The Drum, a European marketing website, “When you look at television news as a product I feel it is looking very tired and out of step.” “While other news organizations have dabbled with iPhone journalism it’s often as a supplement when the other camera isn’t working”.

That supplement status is doing little to rescue journalism. Until smartphone newsgathering largely displaces ENG/SNG those outmoded technologies and workflows will continue wasting huge sums that could be spent to hire, train and equip mobile journalists thereby increasing the quality and quantity of video stories available to news consumers.

Turness may understand that smartphone newsgathering and ENG can no longer peacefully co-exist. The only way to take the handcuffs off smartphone newsgathering is to lay ENG/SNG technologies and workflow to rest and give them the honorable burial they deserve.

Coming up, Part 2: Euronews’s iPhone Journalism: What Could Go Wrong?

CHELMSFORD, MA—Broadcast Pix has upgraded its iPixPad and iPixPanel applications to support Apple’s iOS 11 OS. Downloadable from the App Store, the apps allow users to remotely control their Broadcast Pix integrated production switchers using Apple mobile devices. They also support all screen sizes, while maximizing today’s larger screens.

iPixPad replicates the control panel’s PixPad on an iPhone or iPod Touch. This free app also allows users to select and recall CG and clip content, plus trigger macros that recall camera presets or external devices. iPixPanel replicates a Broadcast Pix control panel on an iPad, including the PixPad, device control bank, and PixButtons with dynamic displays that show the assigned device and file name.

Besides wirelessly controlling a complete Broadcast Pix system, iPixPanel can serve as an additional control surface for a second operator. The interface, which includes a three-axis joystick and rotary knobs, automatically detects and configures the system it’s controlling.

While iPixPanel is priced at $9.99, the upgrade is free for current users.
