                                <p><strong>BOTHELL, Wash.—</strong>A decade after its formation as an advocacy for media interoperability over IP, the Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) is now rolling out a fully baked version of its IPMX protocol for AV over IP. </p><p>In what it terms as a “major milestone for Pro AV-over-IP at ISE 2026,” AIMS announced the official launch of Internet Protocol Media Experience (IPMX) as a fully developed, certifiable standard. The demonstration will highlight the ease of deploying and operating IPMX-based systems, showing how the standard is ready for use in Pro AV environments today. Attendees will also be able to get a preview of the latest IPMX training initiatives that are in development for 2026 and beyond.</p><p>IPMX will also be featured in several partner kiosks within the AIMS booth. In these kiosks, member companies Packet Storm, Providius, Evertz, MegaPixel, and Meinberg will demonstrate IPMX-based systems across a wide range of real-world scenarios, including interoperability with SMPTE ST 2110, AES67, JPEG XS, Dante, and more.</p><p>ISE 2026 will also serve as a milestone for AIMS itself, as the organization marks 10 years of innovation, partnerships, and building an open future for media-over-IP. To commemorate both the anniversary and the official launch of IPMX, AIMS will host a cocktail reception at its booth on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 4:30 p.m., open to all ISE attendees to celebrate with the broader Pro AV community.</p><p>Created by AIMS in collaboration with VSF and AMWA, IPMX implements a standards-based approach based on SMPTE ST 2110, with features and capabilities that target the specific needs of the broadcast and Pro AV industries. In addition to simplifying the implementation of SMPTE ST 2110 and ensuring interoperability for AV-over-IP systems, IPMX incorporates core features tailored to Pro AV installations. </p><p>These features include asynchronous audio and video support suitable for both live production and Pro AV presentations, 4K60 transmission over a single gigabit network, and HDCP for content security. IPMX also includes a control layer provided by AMWA’s NMOS specifications, which enhances device interoperability and eases the dependency on a myriad of proprietary control system protocols.</p>

It embodies a philosophy of system design that prioritizes flexibility, choice, and futureproofing over vendor lock-in. As broadcast facilities invest heavily in AV-over-IP infrastructure, understanding the full spectrum of interoperability considerations becomes essential.</p><p>The broadcast industry thrives on innovation, with technological advancement driving improvements in production quality, workflow efficiency, and audience experience. Open, interoperable systems accelerate this innovation by enabling more product selection for the ecosystem. When manufacturers build products that seamlessly integrate with existing infrastructure, they're empowered to focus on solving specific problems rather than recreating entire ecosystems.</p><div><blockquote><p>The broadcast industry thrives on innovation, with technological advancement driving improvements in production quality, workflow efficiency, and audience experience. </p></blockquote></div><p>Consider the practical implications: more manufacturers developing interoperable products means more resources dedicated to solving industry challenges, more diverse perspectives addressing workflow bottlenecks, and more rapid iteration on solutions. </p><p><strong>Innovation for Everyone</strong><br>This expanded ecosystem also distributes time to market across multiple companies. When one manufacturer develops a breakthrough in a specific area—whether audio processing, video encoding, or network management—that innovation becomes immediately available to the entire ecosystem without waiting for a single vendor to replicate the functionality.</p><p>Interoperable systems provide broadcast facilities with manufacturer-agnostic selection criteria. Technical specifications, performance requirements, and feature sets drive purchasing decisions rather than ecosystem compatibility. When upgrading a single component—a video encoder, audio processor, or control interface—the decision focuses on finding the best tool for the job rather than the best tool that works within existing constraints.</p><p>Broadcast operations rarely remain static. Facilities expand, production demands increase, and new workflows emerge. Open, interoperable systems scale more gracefully because growth isn't constrained by single-vendor product availability or capacity limitations.</p><p>Geographic distribution presents another scalability advantage. Open platforms running on standard IT infrastructure enable facilities to extend operations across multiple locations, connecting remote production sites, satellite offices, and cloud resources without architectural limitations. Signals route seamlessly wherever network connectivity exists, whether across a building, a campus, or continents.</p><p>Open, interoperable systems also introduce competitive pricing dynamics. Multiple manufacturers competing for each component category create natural price pressure and incentivize value innovation. </p><p>Longevity and upgrade cycles also affect budgets. Interoperable systems allow facilities to extend the productive life of equipment, replacing components based on capability requirements rather than compatibility mandates.</p><p><strong>Security Considerations</strong><br>Security represents a critical consideration in any broadcast infrastructure decision. Modern interoperable platforms incorporate robust security frameworks that address the unique requirements of broadcast operations. Authentication systems ensure that only authorized users can configure signal routing or modify system parameters. Encryption protects media streams from interception or unauthorized access, whether signals traverse local networks or extend to cloud resources.</p><p>Consider how platforms like Dante address security in broadcast contexts. Dante Director and Dante Domain Manager provide comprehensive user authentication, ensuring signal routes remain secure and content reaches only intended destinations. These tools enable role-based access control, audit logging, and encrypted communication between devices—all while maintaining the flexibility and interoperability that make open platforms valuable.</p><p>Security in multi-manufacturer environments requires neutral oversight. When a single manufacturer controls both the devices and the security framework, other manufacturers face challenges in achieving truly equivalent integration. Security credentials, authentication mechanisms, and encryption implementations may be documented but not genuinely accessible, creating practical barriers to interoperability.</p><p>Independent third-party management of security frameworks ensures that all manufacturers operate on equal footing. Platform providers like Audinate maintain a security infrastructure that works consistently across devices from any manufacturer. This neutrality is essential for creating genuinely interoperable ecosystems where security doesn't become a competitive moat separating manufacturers.</p><p>Independence also matters for long-term viability. When security infrastructure exists separately from any single device manufacturer, broadcast facilities gain assurance that security support will continue regardless of individual manufacturer's business decisions or market position changes.</p><p>Interoperable platforms address security and management requirements through management tools that provide unified visibility and control across hybrid infrastructures. Dante Director, for example, enables secure, cloud-based management and monitoring of Dante devices wherever they're located, providing a single interface for device management, signal routing, and system health monitoring.</p><p><strong>Cloud Integration</strong><br>Cloud integration represents a growing imperative for many broadcast operations. Remote production, disaster recovery, scalability on demand, and global content distribution all depend on seamless cloud connectivity. Interoperability between on-premises infrastructure and cloud resources determines how effectively facilities can leverage these capabilities.</p><p>Open platforms facilitate cloud integration in several ways. Standard protocols enable communication between on-premises devices and cloud services. Geographic distribution becomes architecture-independent—signals route between physical facilities and cloud resources using the same mechanisms that connect devices within a building.</p><p>Cloud-based broadcast workflows introduce new requirements for interoperability. Facilities need to route signals between on-premises equipment and cloud processing resources, manage and monitor devices regardless of physical location, and maintain consistent security postures across distributed infrastructure.</p><p>Cloud economics shift broadcast infrastructure from capital expenditure to operational expenditure, providing flexibility in how facilities allocate resources. However, realizing these economic benefits requires interoperability that enables facilities to leverage cloud services without abandoning existing infrastructure investments.</p><p>The interoperability decisions broadcast facilities make today will reverberate for years. Interoperability enables innovation by expanding the ecosystem of manufacturers solving industry challenges. It provides choice in equipment selection, scalability as operations grow, and budget flexibility through competitive dynamics and extended equipment lifecycles. Security, when properly implemented in open systems, matches or exceeds proprietary alternatives while maintaining the flexibility that makes interoperability valuable.</p><p>Before selecting a technology path, broadcast facilities should evaluate platforms across multiple dimensions: the breadth of manufacturer support, the maturity of security implementations, the availability of management and monitoring tools, compatibility with existing network infrastructure, and support for cloud integration. </p><p>The question isn't whether interoperability matters, but whether broadcast facilities can afford the limitations of alternatives that don't provide it.</p>

                                <p><strong>PLYMOUTH</strong>, Wisc.—More than 50 organizations from around the world gathered at the headquarters of Heartland Video Systems here Oct. 29-31 to focus on ATSC 3.0 interoperability with an emphasis on signal signing, high dynamic range video, Dolby Atmos audio and enhanced accessibility features.</p><p>“As the broadcasting industry embraces the future with NextGen TV, interoperability and innovation are more critical than ever,” HVS president Dennis Klas said. “Hosting this event at our state-of-the-art ATSC 3.0 lab underscores HVS’s commitment to driving technological advancements that will redefine broadcast. The progress made in testing signal signing across platforms using both ROUTE and MMT protocols is another significant step forward to ensure secure and authentic broadcast signals.”</p><p>The plugfest, the third annual HVS-hosted 3.0 interoperability event, gave broadcasters, consumer electronics manufacturers and broadcast equipment providers the opportunity to test, validate and refine the latest 3.0 features. Thousands of tests across various equipment combinations verified compatibility and performance in real-world scenarios, HVS said.</p><p>The event revealed significant progress on cross-platform signal signing. Participants tested both the ROUTE and MMT protocols. Tests of the former showed ROUTE (Real-Time Object Delivery Over Unidirectional Transport) signing to be successfully verified. MMT signing tests revealed areas needing improvement.</p><p>Various HDR formats, including HLG, HDR10, Dolby Vision and HDR10+, as well as combinations of the same, and 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos audio were tested with the goal of enabling cinema-quality, immersive home entertainment.</p><p>The event also saw tests of enhanced accessibility features to verify consumer device support for AC-4 dialog enhancement, descriptive audio and multiple caption tracks. Jim Starzynski, director and principal audio engineer at NBCUniversal, and Charles Bronson, a video and audio broadcast and live-streaming solutions architect, ensured compatibility, enhancing accessibility for all users.</p><p>Event participants had an opportunity to assess integration of consumer electronics and broadcast equipment for tuning and downloading content via content delivery networks, merging internet-based delivery and over-the-air broadcast for a seamless viewer experience and interactive services. </p><p>Tests were conducted to determine the ability of devices to remain tuned when modulation parameters and service placement change in support of uninterrupted service and 3.0’s flexibility.</p><p>Testing explored Verance watermarking in ATSC 1.0 to render broadcast applications on existing channels as a means to help bridge current and next-generation technologies and extend advanced services.  </p><p>Tests of new datacasting services, compressed layer signaling and basic DASH Event Streams, were conducted, and Mike Dolan, a founding authority on ATSC standards and digita-TV engineering, presented on 3.0 timing using an API to verify device synchronization to enable perfect alignment of audio and video for seamless viewing.</p><p>“The interoperability event at HVS has been pivotal in pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with NextGen TV,” said Anne Schelle, managing director of Pearl TV. “By focusing on critical advancements such as signal signing, HDR, and accessibility, we’ve made significant strides in ensuring that broadcasters can securely and efficiently deliver enhanced services to consumers.                                 <p><strong>WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.—</strong>Plugfest testing of the SMPTE Interoperable Master Format (IMF) this summer has confirmed progress is being made towards interoperability of IMF standards collectively known as SMPTE ST 2067, the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers said today.</p><figure class="van-image-figure pull-" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="qowpsUXpMF6tDiVCmWzEh9" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/qowpsUXpMF6tDiVCmWzEh9.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/qowpsUXpMF6tDiVCmWzEh9.jpg" align="" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class="pull-"></p></div></div></figure><p>In May, more than 30 interop participants gathered at Amazon’s London headquarters for the IMF plugfest. “Participation in the IMF plugfest forms an important part of that commitment, and we’re thrilled to see so many vendors testing their support for our specification,” said Rowan de Pomerai, DPP head of delivery and growth.<br/></p><p>The family of IMF standards addresses the exchange of the components that make up masters to be distributed, SMPTE said.</p><p>IMF was designed specifically for content distribution to multiple territories as well as for advanced content with high dynamic range, wide color gamut, immersive sound and access services like subtitles and captions.</p><p>The SMPTE plugfest provides those implementing IMF with the chance to interchange content and thus enable a forum to improve interoperability and identify areas needing to be improved, SMPTE said.</p><p>Among the areas tested:</p><ul><li>Packaging of World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Timed Text Markup Language (TTML) profiles for Internet Media Subtitles and Captions 1.1 (IMSC1.1);</li><li>SMPTE ST 2067-50:2018 (IMF Application #5 ACES), which is intended for long-term archive of uncompressed Academy Color Encoding System (ACES) image essence;</li><li>SMPTE RDD 45:2017 (Registered Disclosure Document IMF Application ProRes), which adds support for ProRes image essence and is intended to test HDR ProRes IMF packages;</li><li>SMPTE TSP 2121-1:2018 (IMF Application DPP), which creates a profile of IMF designed for broadcast and online content use cases, meeting requirements expressed by DPP member companies.</li></ul><p>Plugfest participants included: Amazon, Dalet, Visible Light, Fraunhofer, Marquise, MTI, Ownzones, Rohde & Schwarz and Venera Technologies, SMPTE said.</p><p>Content for the plugfest was supplied by Paramount, Universal, Turner, the BBC and 20th Century Fox.</p><p>The next IMF plugfest, scheduled for the first half of 2020, is being planned.</p><p>To join the plugfest, contact Thomas Bause Mason at <a href="https://www.smpte.org/smpte-headquarters">SMPTE</a>.</p>

                                <p><strong>LOS ANGELES</strong>—The Video Services Forum has announced that two major industry interoperability demonstrations of the latest technologies for transporting video and audio over IP networks will take place during VidTrans 2019, Feb. 26-28 at the Marina del Rey Marriott in Los Angeles.</p><figure class="van-image-figure pull-" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="VqpQoyKzLq35V24dcNoaBV" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/VqpQoyKzLq35V24dcNoaBV.png" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/VqpQoyKzLq35V24dcNoaBV.png" align="" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class="pull-"></p></div></div></figure><p>The theme of this year’s conference is, “Delivering the Benefits of IP for Media Production” and will focus on the innovative types of IP networking and video technologies and their application both for long-haul video transport and for the production studio. In addition to technical sessions, the conference will also showcase some of the latest applications, technologies and products in its exhibit hall as well as provide abundant networking opportunities at our special events. The exhibition hall and interop will be open Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 26 & 27 and offers an opening night reception on Tuesday.<br/></p><p>VidTrans19 will feature two important industry interoperability demonstrations:</p><p><strong>RIST (Reliable Internet Stream Transport)</strong> technology will be demonstrated through the use of real-time, contribution-quality video streams exchanged over the public Internet between Marina del Rey and a number of remote locations around the world. The emphasis will be on multi-vendor interoperability using VSF TR-06-01 (<a href="https://www.videoservicesforum.org/download/technical_recommendations/VSF_TR-06-1_2018_10_17.pdf" data-original-url="http://www.videoservicesforum.org/download/technical_recommendations/VSF_TR-06-1_2018_10_17.pdf">published</a> in October, 2018), with close to a dozen technology providers participating in the live demos, which will be conducted on-site and via the public Internet.</p><p><strong>JPEG 2000 Ultra-Low Latency (J2K ULL)</strong> technology will also be demonstrated in a live network during VidTrans19. Four leading technology providers, Artel, Evertz, Grass Valley and Media Links, will feature compatible implementations of VSF TR-01:2018 (released this past June) in a live demonstration in the exhibit hall. This new version of the spec updates the widely-adopted TR-01 for new applications, including Ultra HD levels 1 and 2, HDR video and end-to-end latencies below 1 frame period for many implementations.</p><p>This year’s VidTrans conference will comprise two and a half days of informative technical sessions on the latest technologies for high-performance IP media networking. Industry experts will present technical papers on a wide variety of topics related to video networking, IP transport and IP production. Highlighting the conference will be two eagerly anticipated panel discussions: “Challenges and Solutions to the Rollout of 2110 Systems” and “Workflow Virtualization and Cloud-Based Systems – How to Design and Deliver”.                                 <p>To promote more efficient, global file interchange, the Digital Production Partnership Ltd (DPP) just released <strong>The Business Benefits of IMF</strong>, a guide to understanding the financial and operational benefits of Interoperable Master Format (IMF).</p><p>“The global market for quality content has brought enormous opportunity for media companies, by creating demand for different versions of master material. But that also brings great cost and complexity,” says DPP Managing Director, Mark Harrison. “That’s the problem that IMF solves: it enables faster, cheaper and higher quality versioning.                                 <p><strong>NEW ORLEANS—</strong>An interoperability demonstration of uncompressed video and audio-over-IP network transport technology has been added to the schedule for the upcoming VidTrans 2016 Conference, which is scheduled to take place at the end of February in New Orleans. VidTrans focuses on video transport technologies.</p><p>This interoperability demo will feature 14 equipment manufacturers, three test equipment manufacturers, as well as network technology suppliers. Demonstrations will include VSF TR-03 with AES67/IEEE1588, VSF TR-03 with RFC4175, VSF TR-04, ST2022-6 with ST2059 and ST2022-5/6/7.</p><p>Additional events for the conference will include technical sessions on video capture, transport and delivery; technical papers on video networking, IP transport, HDR, IP Video and AES67 audio; and panel discussion on topics like transitioning to an IP infrastructure.</p><p>VidTrans 2016 will take place from Feb. 23-25 at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel in New Orelans.                                 <p><strong>HOLLYWOOD, CALIF.—</strong><em>Shortly before the start of the SMPTE 2015 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition, TV Technology spoke with Paul Briscoe about his upcoming session “Considerations in Interoperability Testing of the New Sync System.”</em><br/><br/><strong>TV Technology:</strong> Would you explain the driving force in moving away from conventional television plant reference technologies (black burst and tri-level sync) and into the realm of precision time protocol (PTP) system synchronizing?<br/><br/> Paul Briscoe<br/><strong>Paul Briscoe:</strong> There are two primary drivers motivating this technology shift. The first and biggest one is the emergence of IP as the next infrastructure plumbing medium. Using an IP-native Standardized PTP method under the hood ensures that we can use it with IP infrastructures that leverage the incredible economies of scale of that industry. The second driver is the SMPTE 2059 Standard suite, which links the network-based PTP timekeeping to all of the media Standards. This means that building systems containing legacy technology and new IP infrastructure can be synchronized in a harmonized and seamless manner. It is of utmost importance that we put in place toolsets like this, which accommodate legacy requirements fully as well as new and future ones in order to enable an evolution rather than force revolution.<br/><br/><strong>TVT:</strong> When you speak of the need for “testing,” it would seem that you are referring to the initial creation and set up of the system; is this correct or is there a need for continuous testing to ensure compliance?<br/><br/><strong>Briscoe:</strong> Testing in the context of this presentation refers to the initial interoperability testing among early implementers of the technology. The intent of this testing is two-fold. One aspect is to ensure that the Standard actually works as intended and is correctly written, and to test this we have pre-established a set of tests and expected results; it’s also encouraging when independent implementers turn up with implementations that behave the same.<br/><br/>The second intent is to demonstrate and prove that compliant implementations of the Standard will interoperate. A collateral benefit of these two is that they help us prove out the Standard overall. This testing is intended to be conducted one time only (though in multiple sessions), the result being proof that the Standard is correct and achieves interoperability. Thereafter, the Standard can be used to build implementations that only require compliance testing by the builder against the Standard.<br/><br/><strong>TVT:</strong> What are the important parameters to evaluate in an ST2059 reference system? Does such evaluation involve human observation and interpretation of results, or is this something that can be done on an automated basis with minimal human involvement?<br/><br/><strong>Briscoe:</strong> There are three parametric domains that we’ll be testing. The first is the actual PTP network behavior, and this is based on parameters laid out in the Standard. In addition to verifying that the SMPTE PTP parameters work correctly, testing will “beat it up” with things like traffic scenarios, packet loss, packet delay variation and so on. Note that these tests apply to both master generators and slave devices. The second domain is the legacy signal testing. The Standard provides for generation of many (most) media signals, and this will be confirmed, each against their Standards looking at things like jitter, wander and lock time, and again by interoperability verification.<br/><br/>Finally, a special case of a signal is time code, because it conveys time inside a legacy signal. This is a tough one because precision timekeeping is a complex topic, and in North America and elsewhere, we have non-integer frame rates that are offset from real time, so discontinuities are part of minute-by-minute and daily life. There is an entire suite of tests dedicated to ensure that, when derived from PTP, time code will be the same as that which we use today.<br/><br/>Testing includes looking at compliance with the drop frame rules and discontinuities. This testing is essentially lab testing and is mostly non-automated. Subsequent to the completion of this work, there is no real need for others (outside of developers, and rarely end users) to do this kind of testing.<br/><br/><strong>TVT:</strong> You refer to “signal and time-code generation;” could you please elaborate on this, as obviously time code is and has been for several decades a very important element in television post production and other areas; however, due to the fractional frame rates that have been around since 1953 and will likely persist into the future (at least in the U.S.), timecode generation/usage is still something of a “bear” to deal with. Will ST2059 referencing make time-code-dependent operations easier or more difficult? Where does the need for testing arise in connection with time-code generation?<br/><br/><strong>Briscoe:</strong> The fractional frame rate issue was indeed the most challenging part of the Standard to figure out. Part of the complexity is that rather than being transmitted as a direct time code value over dedicated wires (LTC) or in the video (VITC/ATC), the time is independently derived from PTP. While this might seem to solve the problem, time coming from time, the snag is that the time code time is off frequency to match the video. Thus, the time values need to track the drop frame rule, which keeps them close to real time.<br/><br/>At the end of the day there is an accumulated error, which is removed by jamming real time into the code. In traditional systems, this is simple — the master is jammed and everyone receives new time code. In a PTP system, the jam is a virtual activity at the receivers, signaled by the master, so not only do the receivers need to do the calculations necessary to figure this out, they all need to act as though they received the new time code at the same time as each other as well as legacy receivers. In addition, a receiver powered up in the middle of the day (between jams) needs to know when the jam occurred in order to calculate where it is in the daily dance of drop frame to know the correct time.<br/><br/>In future, more advanced time labels can offer the opportunity of carrying better information than ST12 time code, for example the PTP precision timestamp, arbitrary frame count, and so on, and these concepts can be based on the foundational work of the ST2059 Standard. <em><br/><br/></em><strong>TVT:</strong> This is probably a little off-track, but as television production/broadcasting entities are likely to be operating with a mix of state-of-the art and legacy equipment in the near future and for some time thereafter, what are the implications of mixing the two rather disparate referencing requirements of such a hybrid system?<br/><br/><strong>Briscoe:</strong> When we started the work that became ST2059, IP media transport was obvious, but not in sight. However, we realized that not only was an IP solution for synchronization required, it had to enable the construction of all legacy signals used today. This means that IP-based slave generators and equipment could derive all of the references they need today, and that the appropriate reference foundation (PTP) was living on the network for the next step towards IP, whatever that might be. Upon examination, the requirements for synchronization are not too disparate after all.<br/><br/>Clearly we were not going to change video Standards in the move to IP; it’s really about plumbing, so the same algorithms and math used for legacy signal generation are equally appropriate in IP transport, and the nature of the Standard is such that any reasonably conceivable video or audio format that could come along could be accommodated — in legacy or IP plumbing.<em><br/><br/>Briscoe began his career in the broadcasting industry in 1980 at the CBC in Toronto.
