IBC 2015 came to a close last week, and now that we have had time to take in everything that was on hand at the conference, here is TV Tech’s selected top 10 trends from IBC 2015.

Ultra HD
No surprise really here, UHD continues to be one of the biggest topics in the industry and IBC was no different. The question hasn’t really changed either, as professionals are still working on how best to distribute 4K productions to homes. A number of companies held demonstrations of their latest UHD technologies, and the UHD Alliance announced they are close to completing quality standards for 4K, as well as other next-generation premium audiovisual experience. Of course, Japan’s NHK—which sponsored their own 8K demo in the show’s “Future Zone” is already be moving past 4K, announcing it will start testing 8K broadcasts in 2016 with the goal of broadcasting the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics in the high-res format. And to jumpstart UHD in the United States, Harmonic announced a partnership with NASA to launch the NASA UHD channel as well as a UHD demo channel for retailers.

Virtual Reality
Many are waiting with baited breath for 2016 when virtual reality is expected to make a splash in a big way with multiple companies, including Oculus Rift, releasing new VR systems. People got a teaser of what is on the horizon in Amsterdam, with several booths—including Akamai—showcasing VR technologies. Jaunt VR was on hand to announce an exclusive partnership with VR production company 3MERSIV, while the company also plans to launch a VR content app by the end of the year. The Future Zone had several VR demoes featuring panoramic image capture from 360° camera rig systems and video stitching software applications.

HDR
Aiding the development of UHD along with 4K is High Dynamic Range. Envivio and Dolby Laboratories helped show just what HDR is able to bring to the table with a presentation of Envivio’s Muse Live Ultra HD video processing software working with the Dolby Vision sets, while NHK offered up a stunning demonstration of HDR in 8K and Technicolor and Elemental Technologies demonstrated what they claim is the world's first live high-dynamic range (HDR) broadcast delivery system. There were also a number of panels covering the requirements and issues in the capture and post-production of HDR images and the technology and challenges of HDR and wide color projection, including a keynote from Pixar and ILM. 

OTT Delivery
OTT services like Netflix and Amazon Prime are growing at rapid paces and are forcing broadcasters to reconsider how they fit into the new market paradigm. Akamai Technologies was one of the companies to take this on, demonstrating live workflow services, on-demand workflow services, advertising services, media delivery and media delivery services, and media analytics with the goal of evolving OTT strategies, while Comcast Wholesale announced the launch of its Live Linear Streaming servicem which combines traditional and online video streaming workflows into a turnkey solution as part of the Comcast Wholesale portfolio of services.

Transitions
In the midst of all the technology and product news at IBC, there were a number of high profile business announcements. Snell and Quantel took advantage of the gathering to announce its rebrand as Snell Advanced Media (aka S.A.M.); Telecom giant Ericsson announced its intent to acquire Envivio a San Francisco-based provider of video transcoding the distribution solutions in a deal worth $125 million; Avid laid out the details of its integration with Orad, which it acquired earlier this year; and Minnetonka joined the Telos Alliance and announced a product development partnership with Linear Acoustics.

Transition to IP
The broadcast’s industry’s slow march towards IP continued at IBC, as various vendors partnered with other companies to demonstrate video over IP capabilities. Imagine partnered with EVS in a demonstration to deliver live production, slow-motion and instant replay operations over IP. Tico Alliance, a group of companies working to develop technology to deliver 4K signals over 3G-SDI, announced it is working with SMPTE to enhance live IP systems, and added Deltacast, EVS, Media Global Links, and Tekronix to its membership ranks. The Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA), a consortium of some of the world’s largest media networks and vendors, launched the Networked Media Incubator (NMI), a project to deliver a framework for IP-based media systems using interoperable and open specifications for end-to-end identity, media transport, timing, discovery & registration, connection management and control. Other IP highlights included EBU and VRT demonstrating a fully IP TV studio, Grass Valley introducing GV Node, a real-time IP processing and routing platform, Evertz demonstrating its ASPEN IP protocol and announcing that Ross will integrate the ASPEN interface into Ross switchers and Newtek, with the launch of its NewTek-NDI (Network Device Interface), an open standard for live production IP workflows over Ethernet networks<

Immersive Audio
Immersive, multichannel 3D audio is gaining momentum, and a number of companies came to IBC 2015 to showcase what they are looking to add to the market. Jünger Audio displayed a prototype of its audio monitoring system that will allow broadcasters to check the quality of all immersive audio transmissions regardless of formats. An audio system developed by the MPEG-H Audio Alliance has also demo-ed, which includes object-based and immersive audio. Attendees got to experience what Dolby had to offer in terms of immersive audio first-hand, as the Dolby Atmos was installed in the IBC Big Screen Auditorium for screenings of summer movies ‘Fantastic Four’ and ‘Inside Out.’

The Cloud/Virtualization
According to a new survey from Snell Advanced Media, cloud-based technologies still draw some skepticism from industry executives. Only 13 percent of respondents were willing to use cloud-based technologies to playout a primary channel, and the same said they would never make the move. But that’s not stopping companies from pushing forward with the technology. Adobe unveiled updates to its Creative Cloud; Zoo Digital premiered a cloud-based metadata management service; SGL showcased cloud-based archiving; and Al Jazeera technology chief Mohammed Abuagla explained that cloud technology is becoming virtualized. “We have to change the way we are thinking and we have to adapt,” said Abuagla. “We don’t care what we are running on because everything is virtualized.”

Drones
Everybody loves drones, and attendees got to learn more about them first-hand with IBC’s Drone Zone. Companies like Amimon Ltd., Autel Intelligent, DJI, Intuitive Aerial and Shenzen Wingsland Technologies partook in daily demonstrations in the Drone Zone. Elsewhere throughout the convention center, a number of new drones were unveiled, including the tethered Fotokite Phi and a collapsible backpack drone from ProDrone. DJI also displayed two new cameras that go with its Inspire 1 drone.

Managing Your Trade Show Activities
As the industry’s second largest annual trade show IBC provides many opportunities to network and share information with colleagues. To make that process easier, this year IBC introduced the “Touch & Connect” service for attendees. All registered attendees for the conference were automatically registered for Touch & Connect and could access it through any device to make contacts, collect information or share contact details with a vendor with a single touch. AMSTERDAM—IBC2015 wrapped up on Sept. 15, with the organizers announcing that it attracted over 1,800 vendors, a record, and that visitors totaled 55,128, exceeding the previous high set in 2014.

With the event producing significant discussion about the need for rapid and radical changes in broadcast technologies, IBC CEO Michael Crimp noted in a statement that “the media industry today is radically different from where we were even five years ago. We have gone from an industry that was defined by technology to one where we demand new functionality from our vendors; from an industry where broadcasters told us what we were going to watch to one where consumers call for content wherever and whenever they want.”

AMSTERDAM-Audio over IP connectivity and signal transport in radio is commonplace, but TV broadcasters have been slow to catch up – until now, says Martin Dyster, VP, business development/TV, Linear Acoustic, part of Telos Alliance

Anybody involved in broadcast technology will have noticed the subject of media-over-IP emerge as the ‘next big thing’. IBC2015 looks set to be dominated by IP and while the video side of the business wrestles with formats and protocols, standards based audio-over-IP is already here. Mature, proven and in the case of radio, AoIP has been around since the early 00’s.

TVB Europe has the rest of the story. 

AMSTERDAM—Expanding to the online media market, LiveU has launched its new plug and play live streaming bonding system, the LiveU Solo. Designed to work with web streaming workflows, the LiveU Solo is able to connect to the Wowza Streaming Cloud as well as other CDNs, OVPs and YouTube Live.

Able to be controlled remotely via a web interface of smartphone, the LiveU Solo is based on LiveU’s bonding technology, industry patents and LiveU Reliable Transport protocol. Solo delivers video streams using LRT’s integral adaptive bit-rate and forward error correction technology. For transmission, the Solo is available in a single channel streaming configuration or with premium full bonding capabilities.

LiveU Solo is currently being displayed at IBC 2015, which runs through Sept. 15 in Amsterdam. The system will be offered to customers via LiveU’s new online store.

AMSTERDAM—After introducing the aNorm loudness processor for its DB6 Broadcast Audio Processor at IBC 2014, TC Electronic has introduced an aNorm optional license for Loudness Pilot, the stereo version of DB6, at IBC 2015.

The aNorm system keeps dynamics processing at a minimum by normalizing the signal intelligently. The system only applies dynamic processing if normalization is not enough to hit the Loudness and LRA targets. Also, aNorm is able to adapt what tools it uses in dynamic processing so not to squash the audio.

Included with the aNorm is the Butterfly Meter, which displays pre and post loudness normalization and is an integrated part of the aNorm algorithm. The graph provides an overview of how and why incoming audio is adjusted.

The aNorm license for Loudness Pilot will be available starting in October for $650.

IROQUIS, ONTARIO—Ross Video will arrive in Amsterdam for IBC 2015 ready to showcase its new production clip server, XPression Clips. Based on the XPression real-time graphics engine, XPression Clips eliminates pre-rolls with instant recalls, features an intuitive interface, and supports multiple forms of automation control, including integration with Ross switchers.

CG functionality can also be added to the XPresion Clips server with the XPression Studio upgrade, which combines real-time 3D graphics with video and graphic clips in the same device. XPression clips also plays back video inside XPression materials, making it possible to recall clips into virtual monitors in VS/AR implementations on the fly.

The ClipStore database keeps track of all metadata and can synchronize with other ClipStores in a facility. Multiple XPression Clips can also run off a single ClipStore on a NAS or SAN. In addition, the XPression INcoder application can be used as a companion application that transcodes files from popular file formats into XPression codec. After the transcode process, Incoder delivers the clip to a network location or registers it in one or more ClipStore databases for immediate recall.

XPression Clips will be supported in the next release of the XPression MOS Plug-In. Journalists will be able to select a Clips tab from the plug-in window, browse for content, and add clips directly into their stores. Ross is also underway on integration Clips with Ross Streamline.

Ross Video will be located at booths 9.B08, 9.C23 and 9.C10 during IBC 2015.

NEW BERN, N.C.—Wheatstone, the provider of audio products for the TV and radio industries, has announced two new products that it will premiere at IBC 2015. Set to debut are the IP Mix Engine, a AES67 compatible IP audio network interface, and a new touchscreen for the Dimension Three audio console.

The Gibraltar IP Mix Engine provides Wheatstone audio consoles with direct connectivity into WheatNet-IP, an AES67 compatible IP audio network. The new engine can handle 1,024 channels of audio, allowing IP audio consoles to handle live and post-production. The Gibraltar IP Mix Engine will be available for the Dimension Three, Series Four, D8-EX, Series Two and IP-64 digital mixing console.

Wheatstone will also showcase its updated Dimension Three TV audio consoles, now featuring a touchscreen option. Eliminating the “sea of knobs,” as Wheatstone describes, the touchscreen option features a tabbed menu for basic functions like talkback, configuring bus matrices, muting mic groups, and managing sources. It also utilizes smartphone-like gestures, including pinching. In addition, a new interrogation feature is available for drilling down into function settings.

GILZE, NETHERLANDS—A new tide is rolling in at Axon Digital Design, as the company has announced that it will launch its new multi-codec, multi-format modular processing platform TIDE at the upcoming IBC 2015 show. The system is designed to handle the contribution and distribution of live video.

TIDE can process live broadcast quality signals, perform HD and SD video encoding and decoding, Conditional Access or BISS scrambling and descrambling, and transport stream (re)multiplexing from contribution to channel back-up, including over satellite, microwave, 3G/4G/5G mobile networks, managed IP networks and the open Internet. The platform also features the Reliable Real-Time Transport Protocol, which manages and improves bandwidth usage ratio to deliver reliable streaming over the open Internet and public networks.

TIDE offers a range of 15 modules that include satellite and terrestrial reception modules; multi-channel encoder and decoder modules; MPEG Transport Stream I/O modules via IP and ASI; and a descrambling unit with space for four Common Interface Conditional Access descrambling units. In addition, the system offers low-latency encoding, faster than real-time file transfer and modular high density.

Also at IBC 2015, Axon will demonstrate the TIDE LiveCastPro, a mobile video uplink system that can be mounted on any ENG camera. The LiveCastPro utilizes the R2TP protocol to deliver high quality images and fast transfer of video files using any IP network.

All TIDE elements come with a built-in web-based control user interface, as well as the ability to be monitored and controlled by Axon’s Cerebrum software platform for larger deployments.

IBC 2015 runs from Sept. 11-15 in Amsterdam. Axon will demonstrate TIDE and its other products at booth 10.A21 and 10.B21.

EINDHOVE, NETHERLANDS & PARIS—NexGuard, a Civolution Company and provider of forensic watermarking technology, and ATEME, a HEVC, H.264, MPEG-2 video compression technology company, has announced that they will launch a forensic watermarking capability for pre-release HDR video content. Integrated with ATEME’s TITAN software transcoder, this collaboration will debut at the 2015 IBC Show.

The technology is based on NexGuard’s Software Development Kit and is integrated with the TITAN software transcoder. It enables customers to identify leaks prior to delivering content to the home over UHD and HDR-ready TVs. The product utilizes UHD 12 or 16-bit uncompressed source content to prepare HDR versions of content for Blu-Ray and electronic distribution. The images are watermarked and encoded to 10-bit Perceptual Quantizer HDR with 45 Mbit/sec HEVC, then rendered on an HDR capable UHD TV.

“Deploying NexGuard forensic watermarking for pre-release content ensures that video assets are traceable all the way to the source, and helps identify the origin of any leaks in short timeframes,” said Emmanuel Boureau, vice president of sales at ATEME. “This enables us to take an active part in protecting the production industry’s most valuable assets, and opens the door to content and facilities supporting HDR.”

Demonstrations for NexGuard’s watermarking technology will take place at booth 2.B41 during IBC 2015, which runs from Sept. 11-15 in Amsterdam.

HERTFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND—PlayBox Technology has announced it has added the CloudAir universal playout and streaming platform to its product range, and will demonstrate it at the upcoming 2015 IBC Show. The CloudAir’s main design is streamlining workflows to deliver TV from the cloud.

CloudAir is a unified workflow environment based on software centric modules. The software development resources support terrestrial, satellite or online viewing standards for live or near-live coverage. The system is capable of ingest, source transcoding, quality control, media asset management, production, post-production, subtitling, scheduling, playout and transmission. CloudAir can be operated in fully automated mode with the option of making schedule alterations or live inserts. In addition, a unified interface and automated alerts are also available.

PlayBox Technology’s CloudAir system will be on display at IBC 2015 at booth 8.B70. IBC 2015 takes place from Sept. 11-15 in Amsterdam.

LONDON—Virtual reality is coming down the pipeline, but Forbidden Technologies will look to offer IBC 2015 attendees virtual workflows as it will premiere its end-to-end virtualized workflow for post-production and distribution of video content. The hardware independent technology combines the company’s Forscene system with the Microsoft Azure cloud computing platform.

The workflow has the Forscene ingest server run as a virtual machine on the Microsoft Azure platform to transcode and ingest live broadcast streams into Forscene accounts quickly after the life feed. Video editors can create clips or highlights using Forscene’s NLE from any location. Upon completion, the sequence is dropped back into the Azure for conforming and distribution.

IBC attendees can experience the workflow at Forbidden Technologies’ booth, 8.B38e. They will compete in a simulated car race and then edit it on Forscene without hardware.

BURLINGTON, ONTARIO—Evertz is bringing a quartet of products to Amsterdam for the upcoming 2015 IBC Show, led by the IP-based monitoring platform, MViP-II. The audio and video infrastructure manufacturer will also have its new audio/video processor, router, and 10GE monitoring system on hand.

MViP-II

The MViP-II offers audio and video monitoring from an IP transport stream with features like loudness monitoring, Macroblock detection and fault based recording. The system is able to simultaneously support decodes of up to 64xMPEG/H.264 SD, 32xMPEG/H.264 or 16xH.264 HD in a single 2RU chassis. The MViP-II can be used to monitor both main screen encodes and over the top streams, including HLS, LSS, HDS, and MPEG-DASH on top of MPEG-2 transport streams. The platform supports all major video compression standards, as well as streaming output. When integrated with Evertz’s VistaLINK SNMP system, MViP-II supports source cycling, penalty box, fault logging and reporting under a single management system.

Evertz will also introduce the 7815VPDA series of audio/video processors for SD, HD and 3G SDI signals. The 7815VDPA is single module that is able to address up/down/cross conversion, frame synchronization, video/audio processing, coaxial/optical signal distribution and streaming encoding. Up to 14 paths of signal processing/distribution can be housed in only 3RU of rack space.

The latest entry in the EQX routing family will also be display, the EQX 10. The new router features a compact vertically seated crosspoint architecture that utilizes Green technology and EQX frame controller. This frame design allows for reduced power consumption and heat dissipation in the input, output, and crosspoint module. The EQX 10 was also designed to integrate with Evertz SDVN for fully hybrid architecture using EQX-IPG Video Gateway modules.

Lastly, the 3067VIP10G-3G-HW multi-image display processing module with 10G interface will be present at IBC 2015. The system offers multiviewer functionality with up to 36 inputs and 4 outputs, and is designed to high resolution displays by accepting uncompressed video over 10G multiple links as sources, and outputs mosaic uncompressed or JPEG2000 encoded over 10G. Based off of Evertz’s 7867VIP series, 3067VIP inherits features like automatic aspect ratio adjustment per source, graticule generation, audio monitoring with level bar display, signal fault monitoring and under monitoring display.

PORTLAND, ORE.—Elemental Technologies and Ericsson, co-sponsors of the 4K 4Charity Fun Run at the upcoming 2015 IBC Show, have announced the 4K 4Charity Corporate Challenge to increase participation and charitable donations to humanitarian organization CARE.

The 4K 4Charity Corporate Challenge gives participants the ability to monitor who has the most number of registrations and amount of donations. Participants can also issue company-to-company challenges to drive more registration and donations. The winners in each category will be recognized on race day and in post-event publicity.

PRAGUE—Studio production automation and master control developer Aveco has announced that it will showcase the Astra Studio 3, the company’s third-generation news production automation system. Among Astra Studio 3’s new features are tools that will help speed up time to air and elevate production values.

The Astra Studio 3 comes with multi-studio production automation, which allows all production switcher settings, graphics, virtual sets, video roll-ins, on-set monitors, camera robotics, audio settings and lighting settings to be available in multiple studios and switched between them. New features for Studio 3 include the ability to insert video search results instantly to air outside of a rundown during breaking news through the system’s MAM integration; it also is able to integrate with multiple third-party MAMs. A new Template Editor is also available to develop and modify story templates. Additional features include one-button release of CG control, an advanced mode for news magazine and episodic studio recording, improved video search and additional local/remote preview capabilities.

Aveco will also have Redwood Studio and Redwood Play platforms on display at IBC 2015. Described as a news studio-in-a-box, Redwood Studio is a scalable system for smaller studios under the control of Astra Studio 3. The systems offers a bidirectional MOS interface with newsroom systems, including ENPS, iNEWS, Octopus, OpenMedia, and more. Redwood Play integrates traffic systems and provides local, remote, or cloud-based operation.

ROME—In its 80th year, camera support provider Cartoni has announced that it will premiere four new Focus Fluid heads designed for today’s smaller, lighter cameras at the 2015 IBC Show. The new Focus 8, 12, 18 and 22 can accommodate a variety of cameras, lenses and accessory packages from zero to 48.5 pounds, and each consisting of Cartoni’s counterbalance system.

The Focus fluid heads are made with lightweight magnesium alloy and feature 90 degrees of adjustment. The Focus 8 uses a sliding plate compatible with Sachtler Ace and Manfrotto standard plates, while the Focus 12, 18 and 22 come with a Euro plate compatible with most tripods. Focus 12, 18 and 22 also come with a switchable, illuminated level bubble, and offer 100mm ball base fitting; Focus 8 has a 75 mm ball base fitting.

All new Focus fluid heads will be on display at booth 11.E30.

WIESBADEN, GERMANY—Making its debut at the upcoming 2015 IBC Show will be L-S-B’s new product, theWALL. With theWALL, a software tool for setting up and controlling multiviewers, users can configure monitor walls, route signals, change monitor layouts or save and load their own presets.

As a software-based tool, theWALL is able to integrate with most multiviewers, enabling users to change different kinds of multiviewers with a single tool. The software talks directly to the multiviewers and a GUI for mobile control. The software app can run on all major devices, with all major functions available and can be triggered via drag and drop. Additional features include automatic calibration of multiviewer resolution and aspect ratio and user management for individualized presets.

AMSTERDAM—SGL, a provider of content archive and storage management software, will premiere its new entry-level archive system FlashPack at IBC 2015. A turnkey archiving system designed for all major media and production asset management systems, FlashPack requires no extra hardware or extra software.

FlashPack contains SGL’s FlashNet, a content archive and storage management system, for power, resilience and scalability. Implementation is completed by linking FlashPack to the user’s MAM or PAM system. The software is designed for broadcasters, sport venues, post-production houses, corporate communications and other organizations.

SGL also plans to showcase other new tech and third-party integration at its booth, located at stand 7.J15a.

AMSTERDAM—RTW looks to bring the noise to the 2015 IBC Show, or more precisely the noise control. Among the products the video audio meters and monitoring devices provider will bring the Amsterdam for IBC 2015 includes its new Loudness and Mastering Tools, and Continuous Loudness Correction software. RTW will also be demonstrating its new TouchMonitor firmware and TM3 USB Connect.

The Mastering and Loudness tools are part of version 3.0 of RTW’s Masterclass Plug-ins for both Windows and Mac OS. The new update makes the software compliant with SAWA and TASA cinema loudness standards and its windows and instruments are modified to be freely scalable. Version 3.0 also supports a 12th octave RTA and comes with RTW’s newly developed USB connect software.

Available as both a plug-in and standalone software, the CLC software has been implemented into RTW’s broadcast equipment. The CLC technology allows users to adapt the level of audio they are working on, against a given program-loudness value, along a definable loudness range in real-time. CLS software can handle DAW audio, live audio and files.

Designed for its TM7 and TM9 devices, the new firmware for RTW’s TouchMonitor will feature 12th octave RTA mode with 125 bands, a high resolution with bandpass filters. The new firmware includes a LF dedicated analyzer, cinema loudness modes, and asymmetrical and individual adjustable tolerance ranges for the loudness measurements. An additional numerical display will provide the length of an integrated measurement.

Also, the new TM3 USB Connect software enables a direct connection between a TM3-Primus as a plug-in within a DAW environment. The software provides a remote control within the DAW for stop, start and reset on the TM3-Primus. This device allows the TM3-Primus to be connected to any channel or group in the DAW project by just inserting the plug-in into the desired channel.

CINCINATTI—GatesAir will be in attendance at the upcoming 2015 IBC Show to showcase new advances to its TV and radio transmitters, including the new liquid-cooled Flexiva FLX range of transmitters.

10kW Flexiva FLX

Based on the Flexiva FM air-cooled transmitter and with advances from the Maxiva model, the 10kW Flexiva FLX incorporates a heat-to-liquid transfer that removes heat from the RF plant without excessive air conditioning. The transfer cools the air in the RF plant, moving transmitter heat to the outside by a liquid-to-air heat exchanger with redundant fan systems.

The liquid-cooled design integrates low-noise pump modules within the transmitter to reduce the transmitter’s footprint. Two fully redundant cooling pumps operate in a closed-loop design, with auto-changeover capability in the event of a failure to ensure proper and constant transmitter cooling.

In addition, GatesAir will demonstrate the Maxiva ULX-T transmitters and its high-efficiency broadband amplifications to ensure broadcasters can streamline frequency and modulation changes through a single-amplifier design.

NEWBURY, ENGLAND – Get ready for a whole new Quantel and Snell, as the company has announced that it will launch a new brand, new vision and new developments at the upcoming 2015 IBC Show. Details on the new brand and vision are being kept under lock and key until the show opens.

MAJURA, AUSTRALIA – In a month’s time, the 2015 IBC Show will officially kick off. Today, General Dynamics Mediaware announced what they will bring to the convention, its HEVC ready ad insertion platform, the InStream Splice.

The HEVC UltraHD 4K InStream Splice is a unified, end-to-end playout and ad insertion platform capable of accurate frame splicing at all resolutions up to 4K. InStream can be used with any combination of resolutions across satellite, terrestrial, cable and IPTV.

Mediaware will also demonstrate its Technology Matrix, which enables operators to unite Mediaware’s real-time stream processing technologies in a modular, scalable chassis to deliver high quality video over ASI and IP.

GD Mediaware will be located at booth 5.A26. IBC 2015 will take place from Sept. 11-15 in Amsterdam.

BASINGSTOKE, ENGLAND – Intelligent shared storage and media management system provider EditShare will be on hand when the 2015 IBC Show gets underway in Amsterdam. Among the products the company plans to feature for attendees includes its XStream range of products and a peek at what is coming down the line.

First, EditShare will have its latest editions to the XStream product line, the XStream EFS and XStream ST. The EFS is a scale-out storage system that offers an open storage platform with collaboration features like project sharing with multiple levels of redundancy and scalability. The XStream ST is another shared storage platform with an integrated MAM and archive tools designed for small production facilities, studios and stations.

EditShare Flow

Also on display will be EditShare’s Flow production asset management and Geevs live video servers. Flow allows users to tag and index content, and automate transcoding and media migration from one XStream space to another with integrated production and automation tools. Specific Flow tools include the Flow Watch Folder, which offers distributed transcoding and FTP delivery options, and the AirFlow, a shared storage system that users can remotely access.

Geevs video servers provide scalable channels of SD/HD ingest and playout, which integrate with XStream EFS storage and Flow MAM for a capture and production platform to manage distribution needs. Support for MOS protocol allows integration with Avid iNews, ENPS and Octopus.

EditShare will also have the Whisper Suite. There, attendees will be able to get sneak peeks and offer feedback on EditShare’s future developments in remote workflows and multisite sync tools.

MUNICH – With its new motto, “4K: more than just a resolution,” Rhode & Schwarz will show its entire 4K product portfolio at IBC 2015, set to take place in Amsterdam from Sept. 11-15.

The new R&S Clipster mastering station will be one of the products set to premiere at IBC. With a new hardware architecture, the R&S Clipster offers I/O, image processing, and codec acceleration for post-production workflows in 4K UHD, with high-frame rates, or using Rec. 2020. R&S Clipster is available as a starter version, IMF workflow version, or mastering station.

An updated version of the R&S Venice ingest and production server for improved live studio productions is also set to be showcased. The R&S Venice 4K allows 4K studio production requirements to be met with greater efficiency. The Rohde & Schwarz DVS storage systems then offer back-up options.

Encoding and multiplexing tool R&S AVHE100 can also be seen at IBC, now offering up to 33 MPEG-4 SD or 11 MPEG-4 HD encoders in one unit. Only two height units will hold 4K/UHD with 10-bit resolution. A new hybrid redundancy concept that no longer requires external switching or a higher-level control system will also be available at the show. Seamless switching between national and regional content is also set to be displayed.

Rhode & Schwarz also plans to demonstrate its new transmitters and R&S ETL TV analyzer.

MONTREAL – Grass Valley is set to bring its full stable of cameras, switchers, routers, servers, editing software, automation products and more to Amsterdam for IBC 2015, all of which utilize 4K, IP and the cloud for improved efficiency.

The tandem of the LDX 86 Universe and K2 Dyno Universe Replay System is among the products Grass Valley will have to show attendees. This system allows any camera or replay position to be set up for regular HD, 4K or extreme speed acquisition/replay. All cameras in the LDX series are upgradable to next level formats through the GV-eLicense programs. The K2 Dyno is able to support four channels of 4K record and two channels of 4K playback.

Also available for demonstration is the GV Convergent SDN. The platform gives operators control over the routing of IP signals to provide transparent control in hybrid/SDI workflows. By using proven IT technologies, the GV Convergent SDN can offer unified control of clean IP switching, COTS IP switching, SDI routing, control of IP/SDI gateways, and control of SMPTE-2022-6 HD and 4K one-wire signals.

In addition to a series of new products set to premiere at IBC 2015, Grass Valley’s will display Focus 70 live camera, which consists of two different single HD format camera heads; the GV Stratus video production and content management system; and the iTX Integrated Playout platform version 2.8.

Mark Hilton, vice president of infrastructure products at Grass Valley, will also participate in a panel discussion entitled “The IP Infrastructure Revolution,” which will address how the future of broadcasting is all IT-based and how UHD is accelerating the pace of change. The panel will take place Sept. 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

SAN ANTONIO – NewTek will show how it handles live production when it brings the TriCaster multi-camera video production platform, the 3Play sports production tool, and the TalkShow VS-100 video calling production system to Amsterdam for the 2015 IBC Show.

TriCaster 8000

The new TriCaster Advanced Edition will be on hand for the show. The product features augmented reality capabilities, automated graphics creation based on data fields, audio and tally over IP, and mixes stored media clips in players while streaming live. The other latest models of the TriCaster series, including the TriCaster 8000, will also be shown.

NewTek will also feature the 3Play 4800, an integrated sports production tool that combines a range of live sport capabilities in a single turnkey system. Abilities include slow motion, instant replay, multi-angle preview, in-game highlights and social media publishing.

Video calling production system, TalkShow VS-100, which allows studios and video producers to connect to Skype users and integrate them into live productions, is also set to be on display.

LONDON – With so many social media sites out there, PlayBox Technology aims to offer users a way to streamline it all into one place with its SocialMediaBox. Available as a standalone product or integrated with the TitleBox channel branding system, SocialMediaBox allows comments from multiple social media sites to be quickly processed into a single broadcast stream. PlayBox will launch the full production version at the upcoming 2015 IBC Show.

Using a standard Web browser, operators can use SocialMediaBox to view preconfigured feeds from various sources, adding desired posts to a customized list. Comments can then be edited and published immediately, or held for approval before being used in live programs.

A single SocialMediaBox account can be used by several TV shows and channels. Multiple accounts can be assigned and be able to create custom feeds and set each feed as private.

PlayBox Technology is an international communications and information technology company for the broadcast and corporate markets. It will have SocialMediaBox and other products on display at booth 8.B70 during IBC 2015, which runs from Sept. 11-15 in Amsterdam.

ATLANTA – Broadstream Solutions intends to launch its new Armada Time Delay Server in Amsterdam during the 2015 IBC Show. The Armada provides customers with the ability to delay and replay content for a range of zero to 72 hours.

The Armada Time Delay Server takes live inputs from SD-SDI, HD-SDI or IP and provides SD-SDI, HD-SDI or IP outputs. The servers “Delay Out” feature allows for multiple outputs to come from the same input, with each output able to have the same or different delay periods. Additional outputs can be added with the same or different delay and/or graphic overlay. Multiple delays can also take place on the same server with an optional single fixed graphic overlaid on each delayed output.

The fully automated Armada is available as a 3RU standard, but is also available as 1RU if space is limited. It will be on display at Broadstream’s booth, 8.B29.

SAN DIEGO – DVEO plans to introduce its new multi-carrier advertising platform, the SPOTTER, at the upcoming 2015 IBC Show. The SPOTTER is a targeted ad insertion and delivery platform that uses content and viewer information to determine ads played out to any viewer, combining content type, consumer profile and geographical location data by mining multiple data bases in real-time.

The SPOTTER functions by transcoding content and inserting SCTE 35 signals with the metadata required for ad insertion. The system can use ASI, IP, or HD-SDI as an input, and DVB-ASI or IP as its output. Automated UDP Packet Recovery Technology can also be added via DVEO’s DOZER for error-free, real-time video delivery to MSO, cable operator, affiliate, or regional head ends.

SCTE 35 signals are used to prepare streams for various combinations of program types, regional zones, or viewer profiles. If SCTE signals or the content creator/originator are not involved, SPOTTER can identify content type by analyzing the program guide, closed captions, face/image and video recognition of live video signals.

Additional SPOTTER features include the ability to trigger “ad starts” and deliver targeted ads to set top boxes and mobile viewers.

EMERYVILLE, CALIF. – When Aspera arrives in Amsterdam for the 2015 IBC Show, it will be bringing its portfolio of high-speed file transfer software and automation systems for the broadcast and media industries. Among these will be Aspera’s new SaaS platform, Aspera Files.

Built on Aspera’s FASP transport technology, Aspera Files allows organizations to establish a branded web-based presence for the exchange and delivery of any size file-based media or data between end users across separate organizations, combining multiple storage platforms. Content can be stored and accessed in multiple cloud or on-premise storage systems, and can be shared via a drag-and-drop feature. Distance-neutral exchange of any size data over the Internet is also allowed.

In addition, Aspera will show a number of other products powered by the next generation of FASP. BERLIN - Jünger Audio is set to reveal new quality control tools for immersive multichannel 3D audio at the upcoming 2015 IBC Show. On display will be a prototype audio monitoring platform that will allow broadcasters to check the quality of all immersive audio transmission, regardless of format.

The audio monitoring system is a hardware-based product that will serve as a future platform to host immersive 3D audio encoding formats from different vendors, including MPEG-H TV audio system and Dolby’s immersive audio system. The hardware contains a combination of I/O, decoding stage, monitoring functionality, audio control software, and an advanced user interface. The platform allows monitoring and auditioning of up to 16 channels of audio. SDI, MADI and AoIP input and output formats will also be included. For object based encoded content, the graphical interface allows the user to perform 3D panning for audio objects to move and pan them around the screen.

At IBC, Jünger will demonstrate its audio monitoring technology with the Fraunhofer IIS MPEG-H TV audio system. The integration of Jünger loudness control features into MPEG-H enables broadcasters to identify content that has already been processed or leveled for loudness control or not.

Ncam PTZ camera tracking system

LONDON – Ncam will use IBC 2015 as the launching pad for its new entry-level camera tracking product. This PTZ system is designed for broadcasters who want to use virtual graphics and augmented reality but only need pan, tilt and zoom functionality.

The new PTZ product provides similar functionality as Ncam’s Live 7D, which uses a lightweight sensor bar attached to the camera to track natural markers in the environment. The difference is the PTZ product only works on fixed position cameras. It works on any camera, tripod or pedestal and it can also use encoded lenses to add focus and zoom to the Ncam data stream. This new Ncam camera tracking system also is able to detect movements of the camera itself, not just the camera head.

Ncam will have its PTZ product on display, along with other broadcast and film products, at booth 11.E55 during IBC 2015, which runs from Sept. 11-15 in Amsterdam.

IROQUOIS, ONTARIO – Ross Video is heading to Amsterdam for this year’s IBC show with a specific message – to show how Ross technology can be used to provide complete solutions for different types of product environments, like virtual and augmented reality, news editorial, sports stadiums, legislative assembly and graphics.

Necessary for all the products being demonstrated at IBC 2015 is Ross’ infrastructure products. Among the company’s new products are the Electra X Advanced Media Processor family and the Spectrum X Advanced Media Server system. Both the Electra X and Spectrum X are making their IBC debuts with this year’s convention. Spectrum X

The Spectrum X is designed for production and playout applications to ease transition to IP broadcast workflows by integrating SDI and IP I/O on the same chassis. The software-based system uses Harmonic VOS technologies and combines file, baseband and transport stream ingest with comprehensive integrated channel playout capabilities, including graphics and branding, DVE, master control switching and audio mixing.

Harmonic’s ContentStore 5840 will also be on hand and with its integration into new or existing MediaGrid installations the system can compress 15 rack units of MediaGrid storage into 5 RU and support 360 TB of usable storage per chassis.

The Harmonic VOS, a fully virtualized platform used to unify the media processing chain for broadcast and multiscreen distribution, uses IT economics to simplify workflow. It is currently being used by Harmonic’s Electra XVM virtualized media processor and ProMedia X Origin multiscreen media server.

Lastly, the ProView 7100 is a single-rack, multi-format, integrated receiver-decoder, transcoder and MPEG stream processor to support the HEVC standard. The ProView 7100 can decode HEVC compressed streams up to 1080p60 resolution.

SAN JOSE, CALIF. – Quantum’s StorNext 5 shared storage workflow will be the focal point of the company’s presentation at the upcoming IBC 2015 show in Amsterdam. The company will also highlight StorNext Connect, a management and monitoring console that provides a dashboard for the entire StorNext environment.

StorNext 5 supports content production, distribution and archiving. It automatically moves data across different storage technologies while maintaining full control of the data for fast file-streaming performance.

StorNext Pro Foundation

Extending the StorNext 5 workflow is the Q-Cloud Archive, which allows end-to-end StorNext environments to leverage cloud storage fully with no additional hardware, separate applications or programming while maintaining full compatibility with existing software applications.

Also on display will be the StorNext Pro Foundation, an integrate shared storage system for new users in post, broadcast, corporate and government video to manage assets from ingest to delivery to archive. The Lattus object storage system, which creates parallel workflows for non-real-time operations, will also be on hand; as will the recently released Artico intelligent NAS archive.

Quantum is also preparing a demonstration on how StorNext connects to MAMs, NLEs and other tools for work with higher resolutions and greater volumes of content.

MELVILLE, N.Y. – IBC attendees who make their way to the ChyronHego booth will see the broadcast graphics company’s BlueNet end-to-end graphics workflow. The BlueNet workflow contains new and updated products designed to enhance offline graphics production and create graphics using file-based video import and export.

Channel Box Prime

One of ChyronHego’s new products is the Camio 4.2 graphics asset management tool. The latest update of the Camio line comes with a complete redesign of LUCI, the modular interface for producer fulfillment of graphics in newsroom computer systems, with tight integration across ChyronHego product line, can now utilize forward-thinking technology for interfaces on PCs, Macs and tablets.

A new update of the Channel Box, Channel Box Prime, will also be shown to IBC attendees. The redesign of ChyronHego’s channel branding was done for the 64-bit environment. New features for Channel Box Prime include a dedicated rendering engine, scene designer, and Warp Effects, a special-effect that integrates third-party modeling and rendering tools.

ChyronHego’s Paint series also have new versions that will be shown. Paint 6.1 will allow broadcasters to introduce and telestrate a 4K stream in an HD broadcast without losing resolution, according to ChyronHego; Paint Live is designed for live OB productions; and Paint Offline enables users to access file-based import and export video on their laptops.

Studio MediaMaker

Making its IBC debut is the Lyric64, a 64-bit application of the Lyric graphics product. Lyric64 offers a single product for graphics creation and playout with an updated user interface with point-and-click access to data, seamless usability and easy access to Lyric’s feature set. In addition, Lyric 64 is resolution-agnostic, supporting authoring and playout in nonstandard aspect ratios and resolutions of 4K.

An all new ChryonHego will bring to the show is the Studio MediaMaker. This new product streamlines broadcast productions into smaller or non-traditional organizations, providing automation for end-to-end processes of broadcasting. A stand-alone system, Studio MediaMaker also provides tight integration to MOS-compatible newsroom computer systems with template file-based delivery of content to internal MAMs, transmission servers and websites.

ChyronHego will be located at booth 7.D11 at the 2015 IBC Show, which runs from Sept. 11-15 in Amsterdam.

CHAMPAIGN, ILL. – Cobalt will display a pair of new products at the upcoming IBC 2015 in Amsterdam, the RGB color-space corrector and the dual-channel frame sync.

9980-CSC-3G 3G/HD/SD-SDI RGB Color-Space Corrector

The 9980-CSC-3G 3G/HD/SD-SDI RGB color-space corrector/frame sync comes with an integrated test-signal generator for both the openGear framework and Blue Box Group 1000 series. The card’s RGB color-space correction with YCbCr proc controls provides lift, gain, saturation, phase, white clip (hard and soft), black clip, and color saturation clip. With the built-in pattern generator users can pre-emphasize or de-emphasize by the color corrector to match on-set camera colorimetry. Custom settings can be saved to presets for easy recalls.

Also being introduced at IBC 2015 is the 9922-2FS 3G/HD/SD-SDI dual-channel frame sync. This new card is the highest-density card in the openGear family and provides audio and video processing, AES/analog audio embedding and de-embedding, and CVBS I/O with two signal paths of frame sync on a single openGear card. Channel density can go up to 33 channels in 2RU in the OG3-FR openGear frame, or up to 40 channels in the HPF-9000 openGear frame. Features include capability to add RGB color correction, set auto-changeover, and “moving-box” insertion over input video or internally generated test patterns for active picture verification.

Cobalt Digital will display these new products, along with other openGear and Blue Box cards, at stand 10.B44 during IBC 2015, which runs from Sept. 11-15 in Amsterdam.

LIÈGE, BELGIUM – EVS, a provider of live video production systems, will be flying into IBC 2015 with its LSM Cockpit in tow. The live story telling toolset will be just one of the many live production tools that EVS will have on display.

LSM Cockpit

The LSM Cockpit is a toolset made up of LSM Connect, MultiReview and Epsio for a single environment of EVS technologies that lets operators manage live productions with the new version of the server software engine Multicam. The system allows for more in-live capabilities, including two 6x SuperMotion camera ingest and output. The latest Epsio FX Reveal mode improves the live-storytelling by enriching live replays with the addition of synchronized data to create scoreboards and biometric graphic displays. Epsio FX Reveal integrates into any LSM live environment.

The IPDirector live production software suite will display its web-based tools for collaboration and content exchange between venues and studios, automated clip management, metadata integration and archive management. EVS will also showcase Ingest Funeral, a processing portal that automatically transforms, legalizes and masterizes all ingest formats. The IT-based DYVI switcher and the multimedia distribution platform C-Cast will also be demonstrated by EVS.

In addition, EVS will show attendees live production possibilities offered by IP-based infrastructures through a series of live demos.

NEVADA CITY, CALIF. – Telestream will be on hand at IBC 2015 to show its Vantage media processing platform, which is the foundation for transcoding and workflow automation software products that can quickly, easily and efficiently ingest, edit, transform, package, monetize and distribute media.

Updates to the Vantage platform include the new Camera Ingest option that enables hands-free batch ingest, processing, time-alignment and stitching of file-based camera media. Multi-resolution clips can be created automatically in Avid Interplay while allowing frame-chase editing. Vantage now also includes the Lightspeed K80 server, which uses GPU/CPU acceleration technologies to increase video processing and H.264 encoding speeds, and Tempo, a new time adjustment product for re-timing file-based content and adjusting running time of shows and segments. The VOD Producer, which was introduced at the 2015 NAB Show, is also among Vantage’s new software.

Also offered on the Vantage platform is the file-based content assembly software system, Post Producer, the Switch media player, Episode multiformat encoding software and Vantage Cloud Subscriptions, now with expanded regional support in Singapore, Japan, Australia and Germany.

Telestream’s Wirecast live streaming production software will also be demonstrated. Among the features included are Instant Replay, Playlists, iOS sources, social media feeds and more.

Telestream will be at stand 7.G30 for IBC 2015, which runs from Sept. 11-15 in Amsterdam.

MONTREAL – Matrox has announced the slate of products that it will have available for demonstration at IBC 2015 in Amsterdam, including the Monarch HDX dual-channel H.264 encoder, the VS4Recroder Pro multi-camera recording app, and Matrox DSX Developer Products, which includes the M264 multi-channel 4:2:2 10-bit H.264 encoder card.

The Monarch HDX is designed for complete workflow flexibility and features 3G-SDI and HDMI inputs with frame synchronization. It also includes two independent H.264 encoders to provide redundancy and can also stream video from 200 Kbps to 30 Mbps. Scaling, deinterlacing and noise reduction engines send high quality images to encoders, which then use either RTMP or RTSP protocol to deliver live streams to local or cloud-based media servers. Recorded files are saved as either MP4 or MOV files.

VS4Recorder Pro multi-camera recording app

Matrox’s VS4Recorder Pro will also be on hand. This multi-camera recording app is designed to capture up to four video and audio inputs on Matrox VS4 quad HD capture cards for use with editing apps and archiving. The system can create either AVI or MOV files and function as either a multi-viewer or multi-camera live production streaming tool with Telestream Wirecast for Windows.

PORTLAND, ORE. – After the inaugural race at IBC2014, sponsors Elemental Technologies and Ericsson are bringing back the 4K 4Charity Fun Run for IBC2015. Registration is now open with the 4K (2.49 miles) race taking place Saturday, Sept. 12 at Amstel Park in Amsterdam.

All proceeds from the run will be donated to CARE, a humanitarian organization that fights global poverty with community based efforts to improve basic education, end gender-based violence, provide healthcare, increase access to clean water and sanitation, expand economic opportunity and protect natural resources. Sponsorship packages are still available, but are limited.

LONDON – Used to being the one who hands out the gold medal, the International Olympic Committee is set to receive an award of its own at IBC2015 for its conservation and management its audiovisual archive of documents from past Olympic events.

The IOC has an archive featuring 2,000 hours of film, 33,000 hours of video, 8,500 hours of audio and more than 500,000 photographs dating back to the first modern day Olympics in 1896. According to IOC’s archivists, within a few years 50 percent of videos would be unplayable, 20 percent of the faded photographs would be unusable, and there would be no audio players available for a majority of the collection.

With the implementation of the Patrimonial Assets Management program and work from up to 40 specialists, the project took seven years of a combined 100,000 total work hours to cataloguing, indexing, scanning, digital cleaning and restoration.

 “This project is very important for two reasons,” said Michael Lumley, chair of the IBC Awards panel. “First, it ensures that more than a century of Olympic history is preserved for the future. But perhaps even more important, it draws the industry’s focus on a subject is all too easy to ignore.”

“Broadcasters, production companies and anyone with an audiovisual archive can look to the IOC’s Patrimonial Asset Management project to see a model of conservation and access,” Lumley continued. “IBC is pleased to be able to draw attention to this issue through this award, as well as recognizing the excellent work the IOC is undertaking.”

IBC2015 takes place from Sept. 10-15 in Amsterdam.
