TOKYO—FOR-A inked a deal April 8 to acquire all shares of Tamu Radiance, a new company that is a spin-off of Tamura Corp.’s Information Equipment Business, and the Aizu Tamura Corp. manufacturing arm. The effective date of acquisition is Oct. 1.

FOR-A plans to integrate its video technology with the acoustic and wireless intercom technology of Tamura Corp., which historically has sold into the broadcast and public venue infrastructure markets.

Consolidating development, manufacturing and sales resources in a single entity will enable technology integration that moves beyond simply manufacturing solutions leveraging existing assets to merge the strengths of FOR-A’s video and Tamura’s audio and wireless technology, FOR-A said.

The new company will remain in Tokyo, and the head office of the Aizu Tamura manufacturing arm will remain in Fukushima Prefecture.

GoVertical! AiDi delivers 9:16 autocropping for immediate live streaming to mobile platforms. It also tracks objects—including players and the ball. Seamless use of AiDi with FOR-A partner ClassX’ graphics software solutions is planned and will enable rich graphic presentation.

The software-defined FOR-A IMPULSE live production platform is another highlight of this year’s FOR-A NAB booth. Best described as a “studio in a box,” FOR-A IMPULSE consolidates all software tools necessary for broadcast incorporated on servers with high-speed GPU processing.

It features signal processing, multi-view, switching, graphics, audio mix and media player as software functions. Operators create production pipelines within the platform’s highly intuitive graph editor. Because it’s a software-based solution, it’s easy to reconfigure the pipelines depending on the application.

Configurations can be set manually or with AI guidance, which is planned for future implementation.

FOR-A will also spotlight its MixBoard, a software-based switcher that enables users to create complex compositions with unlimited layers. Powered by ClassX, MixBoard switches between cameras, presentations and multimedia sources, using professional 2D/3D transition effects. Key innovations of the MixBoard include new video input types, such as the Media Engine for seamless playout of video clips, stills and playlists as well as the Compositor for creating complex layouts and transitions with greater control during live productions.

The company will also show its HVS-Q12 video switcher. Available for immediate delivery, the video switcher is a 2 M/E 3G switcher that is software upgradable to 12G. It provides 3 M/E equivalent operation with MELite technology.

Designed for broadcast control rooms and live event production, it is a compact 4RU switcher that provides up to 60 inputs and 30 outputs in 3G mode and up to 42 inputs and 21 outputs in 12G. Up to 8 keyers are available per M/E at HD/3G. Four keyers are available for 12G transmission. The HVS-Q12 has an IP interface for both Dante and NDI support.

CYPRESS, Calif.—Nippon TV and FOR-A America have announced that NBC Sports is deploying viztrick AiDi, an on-device AI solution developed by Nippon TV. NBC Sports will use the real-time AI solution during coverage of several live events, starting in 2026.

It is the first deployment of the solution.

AiDi delivers real-time player tracking, face tagging, object recognition, 2.5D telestration, auto-score graphics, and motion data analytics—without internet connectivity. Automatic 9:16 cropping with auto-tracking using highly intuitive operation enables incremental streaming business for mobile phones. The deployment of viztrick AiDi creates the opportunity to provide additional revenue with minimal cost of ownership and helps NBC Sports develop a new business model by offering viewers dynamic 9x16 content for cell phones, reports FOR-A America President and COO Satoshi Kanemura.

Reporting to National Sales Manager Kenneth Cyr, Daniul takes on the role of Southeast regional manager effective immediately, initially covering Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

Daniul was previously with For-A for 12 years, including nearly four years as VP Sales and more than five years serving the Southeast region.

CYPRESS, Calif.—For-A America has partnered with the Tim Russert Department of Communication at John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio, providing an HVS-1200 video switcher, FA-9600 signal processor, and MV-1640IP multiviewer for its TV production studio.

The equipment offers hands-on experience in professional broadcast operations—from live studio productions to sports broadcasting‚ with the actual systems employed worldwide.

“Students at this university will become leaders in the media industry, and our partnership with For-A gives them a chance to be trained at the same level of technology they’ll see in studios and out in the field,” said Dan Slentz, director of Blue Streak Media at John Carroll. The upgraded studio was launched at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug. 25. Beyond its fundamental TV production and editing, the complex can now host ambitious productions like music videos, speech programs and streamed events.

Expanding Sports Production Capabilities
Sports management has always been a popular and successful academic track at John Carroll. Thanks to the new For-A switcher, sports broadcasting is an area of focus at the Department of Communication. The university now has a high-end production tool it can exploit to develop live and recorded coverage of football, soccer, volleyball, and other events for Rock Entertainment Sports—a statewide sports network Slentz was instrumental in launching.

“The switcher helps us support simultaneous events and deliver high-definition live events,” Slentz said. “That’s a requirement as John Carroll grows its national coverage through its athletic programs and its expanded communication outreach throughout the U.S.”

A Future for an Innovation Center
Slentz said he’s looking to create an Innovation Center within the O’Malley Center, where the communication department is headquartered. The Innovation Center will be a digital hub connected to the TV studio. The concept: create an experimental lab space for students to play and learn about production workflows, data-driven communication and multiplatform content methods.

Chair of the Tim Russert Department of Communication Brent Brossman made note of the relevance of this vision. “Our O’Malley Center is the first destination for prospective students and their families,” Brossman said. “The Innovation Center not only will give us state-of-the-art resources for teaching and research, it also will help us display how we prepare students for actual careers in communication and media. CYPRESS, Calif.—Broadcast and video production technology provider FOR-A America has named Ernie Leon as senior vice president, sales and strategic growth, tasked with oversight of sales strategy, business development and market expansion.

Leon, who had held senior leadership posts at Sony and Amazon Web Services (AWS), brings a mix of broadcast expertise, cloud workflow innovation and customer-focused strategy that should help FOR-A accelerate growth and better serve its core broadcast, corporate and house-of-worship customers, the company said.

He’ll be based in Miami and will report to Satoshi Kanemura, FOR-A America president and chief operating officer.

“I’m looking forward to bringing a new perspective to FOR-A and expanding its market reach bringing vast experiences in cloud development and sales strategy,” Leon said. “We could expand even further into broadcast and into the media and entertainment industry as a whole, particularly within live events, corporate, healthcare, and government A/V,” he explains.

HUELVA, Spain—Alfalite has launched SKYPIX RGBW & IM, a new series of ceiling-mounted LED panels designed specifically for virtual production (VP XR) environments.

This new solution combines RGB video playback with an integrated white lighting channel, Alfalite said, delivering more natural, coherent, and adaptable scenes from above.

FOR-A America is the exclusive U.S. business partner of Alfalite.

The SKYPIX series is aimed at film, TV, advertising, live event, and broadcast productions working within VP XR environments, the company reported.

With a 3.9-milimeter pixel pitch, up to 9,000 nits of RGB brightness and a 7,680-hertz refresh rate, Alfalite said SKYPIX offers precise light control, a color temperature range from 3,200 to 6,504 kelvins and a TM-30 color rendering index (Ra) of 90. Its average power consumption of just 35 watts (90 W max) makes it an energy-efficient option for long studio sessions, the company said.

Operators can connect nodes by using the platform’s graph editor to create production pipelines. Because it’s a software-based solution, it’s easy to reconfigure the pipelines depending on the specific application, FOR-A America President Satoshi Kanemura said.

“Until recently, live production has required purchasing large-scale physical equipment and combining a variety of devices,” Kanemura said. “We are introducing a fully software-based platform that’s easy to change as you like depending on the application.”

There were several issues FOR-A wanted to address immediately, he added: the shortage of technical talent, efficient use of equipment resources and streamlining workflows. The system supports distributed production environments, enabling collaboration across multiple locations and allowing remote control and adjustments from anywhere, Kanemura said.

Kanemura introduced past SMPTE President Robert Seidel, whom he called “Mr. ST 2110.” Seidel said that when SMPTE was just starting to roll out the 2110 family of standards, it was envisioned facilities would be connecting a series of boxes all strung together over an IP network.

“But things have changed a little bit in technology,” Seidel said. “We’ve seen a massive improvement in processing power within GPUs [that] enables a whole new thinking and process that will allow us to process a lot more in a single box. Why not move all of these other functionalities into the box?”

FOR-A said the IMPULSE platform can be deployed seamlessly on-premises, in data centers or within public cloud environments. For cloud deployments planned for future delivery, IMPULSE will allow users to scale instance sizes on demand.

The FOR-A MixBoard is a fully software-based switcher that enables users to create complex compositions with unlimited layers via an intuitive GUI. CYPRESS, Calif.—Industry veteran Joe Paryzek has joined video and audio systems distributor For-A America as director, solutions development.

In the newly created post, Paryzek will be responsible for key account management and customer communications to drive development of For-A’s technology with a focus on its IP-based, software-defined solutions, the company said.

Paryzek brings to For-A a deep background in engineering and customer service, most recently as co-owner of the live video systems design firm Strata AVL. He has also worked as a product engineer at systems integration firm Diversified and in pre-sale technical support at Grass Valley.

“Joe will be a wonderful resource for our customers,” For-A America President and Chief Operating Officer Satoshi Kanemura said. “We have several new IP-based and high-bandwidth SDI technologies we’ll be heavily focused on this year. Joe has a thorough understanding of live production technology, full system integration and the business of media and entertainment technology. He can speak with our customers from a deep understanding of their challenges and how we can implement our technology as solutions that address those pain points. BRUGHERIO, Italy—FOR-A will show spotlight software-defined IP solutions and hybrid production at the IBC Show, Sept. 13-16, at the RAI Amsterdam Convention Center.

Software-defined architectures enable smooth transitions to IP, more flexible remote production and advanced AR, VR and XR applications, the company said.

"At IBC 2024, we're demonstrating how broadcasters can evolve their operations to meet today's production challenges," said Fabio Varolo, sales manager of FOR-A Europe. The company’s IBC Stand will feature key areas showing its range of solutions. The SMPTE ST 2110 area will feature an exclusive preview of its new software-defined IP solution. It also will highlight the FA-1616 multi-channel processor, a software-defined signal processing platform bridging the gap between SDI and IP workflows. The FA-1616 can frame synchronize up to 32 channels and perform color correction as well as audio mapping in a compact 1RU form factor, it said.

The ST 2110 area also will feature FOR-A’s RDS (Registration and Discovery System) Conductor for efficient resource sharing in uncompressed IP environments, the MV-1640IP IP multiviewer and SOAR-A EDGE, part of FOR-A's Software Optimized Appliance Revolutionized (SOAR-A) platform. SOAR-A EDGE supports the conversion and delivery of various video formats to SMPTE ST 2110 signals, it said.

For hybrid workflows combining compressed IP and SDI, FOR-A will demonstrate the Insight Server and ClassX Graphics. This area of the stand will also feature the MFR-3100EX all-in-one production center and HVS-190OU and HVS-491OU video switchers, it said.

A highlight of the hybrid zone will be the SOAR-A SWITCH, a fully software-based switcher powered by ClassX, FOR-A said.

Recognizing the growing importance of extended reality in broadcasting, FOR-A will showcase AR, XR and VR capabilities with Koala camera tracking and ClassX graphics solutions. An Alfalite LED wall will complete the dynamic stand display, it said.

CYPRESS, Calif.—Alfalite will feature a new line of turnkey LED displays, media processors and players as well as its Micro LED panels at the 2024 NAB Show, April 13-17, in the FOR-A booth.

FOR-A is the exclusive U.S. partner of the Spanish LED display manufacturer. It also represents Alfalite in Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa and Asia.

Alfalite’s new UHD Finepix panels are designed for mission critical environments, broadcast TV and virtual set applications. They are now available with either MIP (Micro LED in Package) or COB (Chip on Board) construction. Both come standard with Alfalite’s ORIM (Optical Injection Resin Module) technology. All options improve the level of protection of the panel and contribute to its wide viewing angle, FOR-A said.

The UHD Finepix panel has a standard 16:9 aspect ratio, making it easy to replace a display monitor wall as well as low power consumption and durability of more than 100,000 hours. Front and rear access for modular and power supply replacement simplifies installation and maintenance. UHD Finepix MIP is available with 0.6 and 0.9mm pixel pitch, and COB is available with pixel pitches of 0.6, 0.9, 1.2 and 1.5mm. Both provide a 175-degree viewing angle, it said.

Another highlight of the FOR-A NAB booth will be AlfaArt. Alfalite has teamed up with digital artist César Yagüe to create AlfaArt, an all-in-one solution consisting of a UHD Finepix LED wall with state-of-the-art media players and moving ambient artwork that transform entire walls into living canvases. 

FOR-A has been a strategic partner of Alfalite since April 2023 and has integrated Alfalite panels with FOR-A video switchers, signal processors, camera tracking, routers and XR systems as part of a live video production ecosystem, it said.

FOR-A’s live video production workflow includes the HVS-190 NDI-compatible video switcher, FA-9600 and FA-1616 multi-purpose signal processors, ClassX XR technology, EZTrack camera tracking and Alfalite Litepix LED wall. The FOR-A workflow provides an intuitive system for live video production that easily scales with the customer from 3G-SDI and HD signals up to single-cable 12G-SDI, the company said.

CYPRESS, Calif.—FOR-A will unveil innovations that advance its Software-Defined IP Solution theme at the 2024 NAB Show, April 13-17, in Las Vegas.

The company will introduce a SMPTE ST 2110 broadcast software suite that enables flexible IP resource sharing and a 3G-based production automation solution. The company’s live production ecosystem works with all IP protocols and standards, including full support for ST 2110, it said.

In addition to the resource sharing software, FOR-A will demonstrate its SOAR-A platform for remote production; an IP-based custom server; software-based switching; an all-in-one audio and video multiview/routing solution; cost-effective XR software; an end-to-end station automation production system with gateway-free streaming; and new Micro LED displays together with a graphic art library, it said.

The FOR-A booth will feature integrated solution pods for broadcast production automation, ST 2110 workflow, software-based production, cost-effective AR/XR, LED displays with digital art and IP technology under development to be shown in a private suite, it said.

NEW YORK–FOR-A Corp. of America will showcase its software-defined IP workflow and support for SMPTE ST 2110 standards at NAB Show New York.

According to the company, its live production ecosystem “works with all flavors of IP and is available for immediate delivery.”

The SMPTE ST 2110 standards support multicast IP streaming of uncompressed video over local area networks for a more scalable and vendor-agnostic solution. FOR-A’s IP-enabled hardware offerings with an ST 2110 interface include the FA-1616 multichannel processor and MV-1640IP IP Multi Viewer.

Software solutions supporting the standard at NAB Show New York will be the SOAR-A Edge IP transport appliance; SOAR-A IPTV, an IP distribution service; SOAR-A Graphics, a CG and graphics engine; and SOAR-A Play, a software-based media server.

FOR-A’s integration with Aveco automation solutions will also be a part of the company’s booth. FOR-A HVS Series production switchers, Insight video servers and ClassX graphics systems are tightly integrated with Aveco ASTRA Studio production automation and GEMINI media management systems in a powerful package.

Four FA-1616 multichannel processors were recently delivered to a large ST 2110 facility as part of its broadcast infrastructure. With SMPTE ST 2110 and ST 2022 interfaces, the FA-1616 multichannel processor is a suitable gateway between SDI and IP as well as IP to IP and SDI to SDI. The FA-1616’s frame synchronizer also supports 4K/12G-SDI/high dynamic range/wide color gamut and simultaneous processing of 4K UHD and HD video by using four channels together as a 4K processor.

The MV-1640IP IP Multi Viewer can input 16 streams of SMPTE ST 2110-10/20/30/40 HD video via one port—and by using two SFP+ connectors, it can support the redundant environment of SMPTE ST 2022-7. The MV-1640IP uses NMOS for stream switching. Designed for IP or hybrid production workflows, the 1RU MV-1640IP supports up to 32 inputs (16 IP and 16 SDI) and five monitor outputs. With an SFP+ port, the MV-1640IP is compatible with 10GbE and 25GbE environments.

FOR-A’s software-based live production platform, SOAR-A, features an expandable IP-based architecture and supports the conversion and delivery of SD, HD, 4K and NDI to ST 2110 signals. It is compatible with WebRTC and utilizes RIST (Reliable Internet Streaming Transport). The entire SOAR-A workflow enables secure REMI production and gateway-free streaming. The SOAR-A system serves content creators looking for a workflow with low latency, software-based services. All modules within the SOAR-A line are SMPTE ST 2110 capable.

The role of the cloud is now well entrenched in broadcast and cinema production, but some traditional tools remain. This gives flexibility to production workflows that would have been unthinkable 15 years ago, when everyone’s attention was focused on the digital/HD transition.

At the 2023 NAB Show, April 15-19, there will be something old and something new. One of the latest technologies is the use of “volumes” to provide hyper-realistic backgrounds for live and cinema production.

The following is a sample of new production gear that will be shown in Las Vegas next month. 

Knocking Down Barriers
Pixotope, a provider of virtual production software solutions, will showcase its Graphics XR Edition, which includes a range of tools that simplify setup and operation in connection with the use of LED volumes, by reducing the technical complexities and associated resource costs of XR workflows and environments.

“With XR Edition, Pixotope is knocking down a major barrier to virtual production adoption by addressing the challenges that have previously made it difficult to leverage XR outside of major blockbuster productions,” said David Dowling, chief revenue officer of Pixotope. “It effectively removes the need for proprietary hardware, bringing users an off-the-shelf XR solution that enables bigger, better stories with greater ease.”

Blackmagic Design will roll out its line of network storage solutions, including Cloud Store, Cloud Store Mini and Cloud Pod, all of which let users share media files between multiple users on a global scale. The devices also understand proxy workflows, allowing a whole timeline and its media to be shared in minutes with responsiveness similar to a directly connected drive.

“We noticed how other storage solutions on the market didn’t offer the performance needed by the feature film and TV industry, so we took it upon ourselves to build something for our customers that’s not only fast but also reliable, portable and accessible in terms of costs,” said Bob Caniglia, director of sales operations for the Americas at Blackmagic Design. “The resulting Cloud Store, Cloud Store Mini and Cloud Pod are easy to set up and use, while providing secure access to media files globally with syncing and sharing media via Dropbox and Google Drive, allowing users from around the world to collaborate.”

Open Architecture
Panasonic will feature its Kairos line of IP-based production switchers. Kairos is an IT-based open architecture platform that enables functional enhancements and control linkage with external devices by adding software. At the show will be the next-generation Kairos Core 200 and Kairos Core 2000 mainframes, which offer improved functionality and performance, including many more inputs and outputs, improved video-processing performance and enhanced file-storage capacity.

Avid will be on hand to demonstrate its Maestro suite of graphics design and production tools for broadcasters. From news tickers and data-driven visuals to interactive and augmented reality content, Maestro provides solutions and tightly integrated workflows to add content on-screen in a coherent and engaging way.

LiveU will focus on flexible workflows such as remote/decentralized production, and cloud-based management and distribution help to allow delivery of high-quality, dynamic live content. LiveU will also showcase its latest 5G offerings and cloud-based solutions, which use the company’s low-latency, high-quality transmission protocols.

Rolling out its latest NDI-capable switchers is For-A, which will introduce the HVS-190, a 1-M/E version of the company’s flagship HVS-490 video switcher. As with the HVS-490, the HVS-190 also supports high-bandwidth NDI and NDI HX input and output. In addition to these switchers, FOR-A’s MFR-3100EX all-in-one production center, ClassX graphics, Insight media server, and SOAR-A live production platform are all upgradeable to NDI.

Ross Video will feature its 12G ready Ultrix FR12, the latest version of its award-winning Ultrix Router. The FR12 router has an integrated production switcher that allows customers to build an infrastructure with greater flexibility, performance and integration. The Ultrix FR12 is targeted at studios, OB vans and flypacks.

Monetizing Content
Dalet will highlight its Dalet Flex media asset management and workflow solution, which lets users seamlessly produce, curate, orchestrate, archive, deliver and monetize content. With its new mobile app, FlexMOBILE, you can bring the power of Flex to your fingertips with the ability to find, preview, comment, review and approve your assets from anywhere.

TVU will demo its RPS Link Encoder and Channel Plus. The RPS Link Encoder provides multicamera, synchronized remote production capability, targeted for use in remote locations where reliable wired IP connections are unavailable or inadequate. Channel Plus, a cloud-based playout service with integrated ad sales support, enables broadcasters to create live and VOD channel programming from a simple web browser with minimal training and experience.

Matrox will spotlight its ConvertIP line of 4K distribution products that can send zero-latency 4K over 1, 10, and 25 GbE cabling systems. Built on Internet Protocol Media Experience (IPMX), ConvertIP encoder/decoder line supports 4K60 4:4:4 IP signal transport.

Vizrt will highlight its AR and virtual studio capabilities in live production through Viz Virtual Studio and Viz Engine 5. Together, Viz Virtual Studio and Viz Engine 5 enable the creation of interactive 3D virtual sets, AR graphics, and mixed reality presentations, elevating audience experience through XR with hyper-realistic quality.

“Viz Virtual Studio in combination with Viz Engine 5 is a game changer for visual storytellers,” said Chris Black, head of brand and content at Vizrt Group. “Presenters can simply walk through 3D spaces, while the camera follows them and captures the interaction with XR infographics in an XR set that illustrates the story.”

NewTek will showcase the latest in its TriCaster line at the 2023NAB Show. On display will be the new Flex Control Panel, TriCaster Mini X, its sports replay solutions, and more. CaptureCast, the company’s flagship lecture capture solution for enterprise and education technology, will also be available.

Teradek, which will exhibit as part of the Creative Solutions Group in the North Hall, will focus on 4K with the debut of Prism Mobile, a camera-back video encoder with integrated cellular bonding, delivering 4K HDR live video from the toughest network environments. 

Teradek says it developed Prism Mobile “to provide better connectivity, seamless portability, and more reliable video contribution for professionals in the field.” It features two built-in high-performance cellular modems, and support for nine simultaneous network connections across WiFi, Ethernet, and Cellular offering the connectivity required for going live at sporting events, political rallies, and conferences.

As part of the agreement, FOR-A HVS Series production switchers, Insight video servers and ClassX graphics systems are now tightly integrated with Aveco ASTRA Studio production automation and GEMINI media management systems.

This includes all settings for the production switcher, graphics, virtual set/physical set, monitor walls, camera robotics, video roll-ins, audio, lighting etc. ASTRA Studio is integrated with ASTRA MCR so both PCR and MCR automation are in the same system, eliminating "blips of black" or upcuts between these two parts of broadcast operation. Both also work closely with Aveco’s GEMINI MAM, a browser-based system that manages assets from acquisition through post for live production, playout, and archiving. CYRESS, Calif.—FOR-A will feature a fully NDI-compatible live video production ecosystem, including the new HVS-190 video switcher, at the 2023 NAB Show in Las Vegas, April 16-19.

The HVS-190, which supports high-bandwidth NDI and NDI|HX input and output, is a one M/E version of the company’s flagship HVS-490 video switcher and offers 3G/HD-SDI and HDMI interfaces as a standard feature, the company said.

The new switcher, which offers frame synchronization and processing amplification on all inputs, is available in two models. The HVS-190S, featuring a control panel that’s separate from the main unit, has eight inputs and five outputs that are expandable to 20 inputs and 11 outputs, it said.

The HVS-190I is an integrated control panel/main unit video switcher with the same I/O configuration as the HVS-190S and is expandable to 16 inputs and 9 outputs.

“The HVS-190 is an ideal addition to our HVS Series of video production switchers,” said FOR-A Americas president Satoshi Kanemura. “From its NDI support to a highly flexible configuration, this is a switcher that addresses many applications, from broadcast to live event coverage and corporate A/V facilities, at an unbeatable price point.”

With the HVS-190 switchers, users can add output from PTZ cameras, webcams, smartphone camera apps, computer content and other sources and route video/audio from a single switcher to multiple devices, the company said.

The switcher also provides two-way communication with multiple video, audio, control or tally systems using only Ethernet cables. SDI playout and IP streaming occur simultaneously, enabling mixed or coordinated broadcasts of both sources, it said.

The SOAR-A IPTV IP distribution service is an ultra-low latency, web distribution service that provides streaming from one location via WebRTC to any number of remote browsers or set top boxes. It requires a single SOAR-A device at the main location with set top boxes or PCs at remote locations for display. Viewers can watch the video on standard computers, tablets and smart phones. Cameras can also be monitored via a low-latency preview on the web browser without any custom software. It also enables 24/7 recording, FOR-A said.

The SOAR-A Play media server can be used as an IP-optimized multi-channel playout system, available in either two- or four-channel configurations. It offers a web interface to allow control from any device without prior installation and is well-suited for collaborative work among multiple users and groups, allowing concurrent operation, it said.

The SOAR-A Graphics solution supports SMPTE ST 2110 and NDI. The solution forms an ideal complement to FOR-A switchers. Its CG Edit Suite provides graphics creation, and the system’s LiveBoard handles graphics playout.

CYPRESS, Calif.—FOR-A has tapped Will Livingston as sales engineer to serve the Southcentral region of the United States, with a focus on Arizona and Texas. He is also in charge of sales engineering work, including technology demonstrations and training. He reports to Adam Daniul, vice president of sales, FOR-A Americas.

“We’re thrilled that Will’s joining the FOR-A team,” said Satoshi Kanemura, president, FOR-A Americas. “His depth of knowledge about FOR-A and video technology overall is impressive, but moreover, his knowledge of customer’s workflow and the pain points they face every day are invaluable assets.”

Livingston joins FOR-A after 10 years of experience working with FOR-A switchers, most recently as broadcast video director at Compass Christian Church where he oversaw an upgrade of the church’s video production capabilities and selection of an HVS-490 video switcher. Prior to that, he served as production manager at event services company Merestone.

LAS VEGAS—FOR-A began its press event on a respectful note as Satoshi Kane­mura, president and chief operating officer of FOR-A Corp. of America, led a moment of silence honoring the recent passing of company founder Keizo Kiyohara. 

“Keizo Kiyohara has passed away but his DNA is still with us,” Kanemura said. He was speaking directly, as Mr. Kiyohara’s son, Katsuaki Kiyohara, is currently FOR-A‘s president. Kanemura also noted that the elder Kiyohara’s passion for innovation and solid engineering have remained a part of the company.  

FOR-A announced a step forward in its remote production and internet protocol (IP) capabilities. It launched its new REMI product range, integrated with software-based IP technology from AMMUX, a spinoff of SipRadius.

With low-latency encoding and decoding and secure RIST (Reliable Internet Stream Transport), the AMMUX operating system is optimized specifically for broadcast applications, AMMUX Chief Scientist Sergio Ammirata said. The RIST tunnel contains multiple simultaneous streams of video, audio, data and equipment control, while the company’s built-in WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) provides access to files from a web browser.

“With AMMUX inside our software-defined IP platform, it ensures flexible and reliable IP transport that’s tightly integrated with FOR-A’s new FA-1616 multipurpose signal processor,” said Kanemura, who described the new product as a really big Swiss Army knife, capable of performing many jobs. 

Furthering its focus on software-defined IP systems, FOR-A also announced a partnership with IP transport provider Media Links and network time synchronization provider Seiko Solutions. The collaboration aims to provide low-­latency IP contribution, including the option of JPEG XS compression and Precision Time Protocol (PTP) for the precise synchronization of video and audio signals in hybrid IP-baseband systems.

CYPRESS, Calif.—FOR-A Corporation of America has announced that Lyon Video has purchased 35 of its newly-introduced MV-3240 multi-viewers. 

Lyon Video is a video broadcasting and production company based in Columbus, Ohio.

Lyon’s new multi-viewers join a full complement of FOR-A signal processors, telestrators and video switchers already aboard its mobile trucks and will be employed immediately for sports, concerts, and entertainment as the industry returns to large-scale live events.

Installation of nine multi-viewers in the first of Lyon’s HD-capable expando trucks is already complete, with two more mobile trucks to be ready for events beginning in July. 

Because the layout of the multi-viewers often changes from show to show, Lyon relies on FOR-A’s GearLink Integrated Control Software, which eliminates the need to change the layout of each multi-viewer individually. With customizable screen layouts and buttons, all nine multi viewers can be preset to the same screen layout with a single touch, delivering a bird’s-eye view of workflows and convenient visual control of the multi-viewer, video switcher, cameras, routing switcher, clip server, character generator, and other signals.

“The ability to preset screen layouts is a game changer,” said Cris Wollett, chief engineer of Lyon Video. “The multi-viewers we’d been using were cumbersome and time-consuming, requiring us to change the screen layout separately for each unit. The MV-3240 is a compact, 1 RU-sized multi viewer supporting up to 32 inputs for 3G/HD/SD-SDI (and future support for up to 16 inputs for 12G/6G-SDI) as well as four outputs for 3G/HD-SDI (or one output for 12-GSDI and 1 HDMI output.) Users can freely create up to 25 windows for one 4K or up to 40 windows for four 2K images, resizing them from HD to 4K and from 4K to 2K. The built-in layout manager makes it easy to customize layouts, adjusting image size, aspect ratio, position, and other settings, then storing them on the viewer for later recall with the push of a button. The integrated M-JPEG streaming output is simple to monitor outside the control room from any web-enabled device, FOR-A reported. 

CYPRESS, Calif.—FOR-A Corporation has announced that the live video production company Custom Media Solutions (CMS) has launched a new 40-foot broadcast production truck with a FOR-A HVS-2000 video switcher. The truck has been in use since mid-January, including on location for live coverage of Camping World’s Ultimate RV Expo.

Marc Shroyer, president of CMS, said the company took delivery of the truck in early November. “We got it to replace our 24-foot production trailer,” he explained. “It was great, but you could only put eight people in it, and there was not a great space for audio. When everything started going virtual, we really needed to create some space for broadcast audio.”

Originally, the truck had been designed to use CRT monitors, so CMS modernized the interior with an eye on flexibility. The infrastructure was designed to support 12G with all I/O via fiber, so the truck can be upgraded by swapping only a few components. Plus, audio is handled through Dante digital audio networking.

Shroyer reported that CMS recently added five new 4K broadcast cameras that produce footage in a variety of frame rates, including 24p, which is a feature that clients had been requesting. The FOR-A switcher supports 24p, as well as a number of HD and SD formats.

CMS currently owns 10 FOR-A switchers, including four HVS-2000s. “The HVS-2000 can do everything we need, and its price point is significantly less than the switchers many companies would expect to find in a truck of this size," Shroyer said. “If you want to talk about bang for the buck, we were doing things on this switcher that you normally need a much more expensive switcher to do. I can do anything the client wants to do. It’s our secret sauce.”

For example, CMS will use the truck in April to produce live coverage of a large corporate conference in Atlanta. Shroyer said the HVS-2000 will be used to switch both the live broadcast and the I-MAG (image magnification) for the live event. Instead of running feeds between trucks to accommodate the simultaneous productions, a second control panel will simply be added to the switcher, and the directors will sit next to each other during production.

“It’s easy to add a panel. You just plug in a network cable and you’re ready to go,” Shroyer added. “We have plenty of I/O, plus plenty of multi-view and keyers and DVEs – and that creates a lot of flexibility.”

Compatible with four different control panels, the HVS-2000 2 M/E video switcher offers 24 inputs and 18 outputs as standard, and can be expanded up to 48/18 or 40/22 with optional I/O cards. The switcher also includes MELite technology that previews output from an AUX bus when applying transitions or keying for expanded M/E performance, as well as FLEXaKEY architecture for flexible reassignment of keyers separate from the standard keyers of full M/E buses, FOR-A said.

CYPRESS, Calif.—Mobile production facilities provider Lyon Video has acquired three For-A HVS-4900 4K UHD video switchers and 32 multi-purpose signal processors—each with optional software to support HDR, bringing to 42 the number of FA-9600 processors it’s placed into service since late August.

Some of the newly purchased signal processors will be added to the existing complement of For-A solutions on Lyon-14, a 53-foot expando OB truck being used for a 13-game NCAA Division I college football package during the 2021 season, For-A said.

The other new For-A FA-9600 signal processors will be used as part of Lyon Video flypacks in various remote applications. The three new video switchers are also being added to the flypacks.

Designed for use in live environments, the switchers’ event memory and macro function make set up easy, and MELite technology eliminates the need to use multiple switchers in a staging scenario, the company said.

“After just a few outings, we saw the difference in our upconversion to 4K UHD,” said Lyon Video President Chad Snyder, “and we ordered another 32 FA-9600’s immediately for use across our equipment fleet.”

“Viewers want a pristine 4K picture. With these signal processors as part of our equipment package, we can include the extra visual elements that viewers are accustomed to seeing without concern about signal quality. This gives the production a consistent feel at the network level,” he said.

Although Lyon Video will produce the football games in UHD, not all of the content from outside sources, such as graphics, POV cameras and effects, will be supplied in UHD. The FA-9600s will be used to provide high-quality upconversion of HD signals, which helps avoid a jarring difference in picture quality between elements for the viewer.

“The quality of the conversion is so important,” said Snyder. “When we looked at the options available to us, the FA-9600’s quality was superior to their competitors.”

Long term, Lyon Video plans to use the FA-9600s for a variety of applications in all productions. Besides their use in flypacks, the signal processors will enhance the capability of Lyon Video trucks to produce HD/3G and UHD with wider color gamut, including HDR 3D LUT, the company said.

The FA-9600 signal processor is designed for live HDR broadcast production. Each of its two 3G/HD/SD-SDI inputs include: a frame synchronizer, HDR and Wide Color Gamut support and conversion of multiple formats, including 12G, 4K (UHD), 1080p and HD/SD-SDI.

Its 12G-SDI terminals provide support for 4K production (with optional software), while an optional expansion card adds four more channels of 3G-SDI I/O or six channels of 12G-SDI distributed output. Built-in LUTs as well as support of 3D LUTs for SDR-HDR, HDR-HDR and HDR-SDR conversions in mixed SDR and HDR production environments are provided.

TV TECH: What do you anticipate will be the most significant technology trends at the 2021 NAB Show?

SATOSHI KANEMURA: We’ll see considerable discussion surrounding technology that enables the SDI-to-IP transition fully not only just for broadcasters, but also for any industry. Production and processing equipment that provides both 3G/12G and SMPTE 2022/2110 capability will be well-suited to handle the format flexibility and bandwidth needed to carry multiple 4K signals from many locations from acquisition to delivery act as a great gateway. Live streaming technology that’s well-poised for this year and beyond must be able to handle many formats and provide unprecedented bandwidth, while maintaining current workflows with little to no operator training.

We’ll hear about 12G solutions that are in place at high-profile venues in the U.S., not beta sites, but real 12G-SDI 4K workflows, which require not only the correct product specifications, but also practical knowledge about the total system. That takes actual experience and implementation.

And because remote production is not going away, we’ll continue to see breakthroughs there. Switchers particularly will need to be able to take sources from remote locales. Also, we’ll see more comprehensive operation that will reduce keystrokes, operations failures and manpower while increasing creativity. We continue to update our switchers to handle IP sources, which can be used for both broadcast and streaming projects—simultaneously.

TVT: What’s your most important new product news you’ll announce at NAB?

KANEMURA: We’ll be focused on our 12G and IP solutions and offering complete solutions for our customers and potential customers. Within the IP/SDI area in our booth we’ll show our end-to-end SDI and IP hybrid solution by featuring our new FA-1616 SDI/IP signal processor, the UFS-10IP gateway, FA-9600 signal processor, and EDA-2000 delay units. We’ll also announce a new partnership with Media Links, a manufacturer of media over IP transport technology, and Seiko Solutions Inc. to create a Precision Time Protocol (PTP) solution for synchronizing video and audio signals in hybrid IP-baseband systems.

We will show our complete, integrated production system offerings that include our switchers, routers, multiviewers, ClassX graphics, Insight production servers and Envivo Replay and Studio production systems. That is a very exciting section of the booth. We expect to see a great deal of traffic.

We’ll have additional innovations: a new multichannel streaming product, a new imaging system for our 4K Ultra Slow Motion camera, a new multiviewer, and several new partnerships. In short, we’ve got a lot of new developments to tout at this year’s NAB Show.

TVT: How Has the COVID-19 pandemic affected your company’s business the past year and how has it impacted how you exhibit at this year’s show?

KANEMURA: The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated our integration of remote production with our video switchers, specifically the use of remote-control GUIs and physical control panels. With the shift to at-home and other remote-production models, switchers need to allow operators to work outside of the traditional control room using public internet. Customer interest in our remote-production solutions has been very active since I joined FOR-A last April.

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Lyon Video has purchased 10 For-A FA-9600 multi-purpose signal processors with the high dynamic range (HDR) software option for use in mobile video production.

Eight of the units will be installed in Lyon-14, a 53-foot expando OB truck being used to televise a 13-game NCAA Division I college football package this season. The two remaining units will be installed in Lyon-14 later in the  year, said Chad Snyder, president of Lyon Video.

Lyon-14 carries 11 Grass Valley LDX 86N native 4K UHD cameras. Although Lyon Video will produce the football games in UHD, not all of the content from outside sources, such as graphics, POV cameras and effects, is supplied in UHD.

HAIALIAH, Fla.—UnivistaTV, an internet TV channel launched about one year ago, is entertaining audiences with shows like "El Show de Carlucho" from its newly installed all-digital and IP-based studios.

The setup includes a For-A Hanabi production switcher, Ross Carbonite Black Live production switcher, Allen & Heath Dante-enabled SQ7 audio mixer with AoIP connectivity and Yamaha audio monitors.

UnivistaTV also is using a 72-port AEQ CrossNet intercom with TP8116 rack panels for consoles in production master control, vision and audio control and graphics. Separate TP84116 desktop panels are available to directors and spotters, the company said.

Technicians and other personnel on the set and other areas rely on AEQ Xplorer wireless beltpacks. Xplorer uses Wi-Fi technology and can run for up to 20 hours at full capacity, something that is important when cascading live recoding sessions and there’s not time for battery changes, it said.

Integrated into the channels’ AoIP flow, the entire system makes it possible to share signals between different contribution, intercom production and coordination systems. 

Audio present in the AEQ Crossnet intercom matrix is available on the Dante AoIP network as well as other equipment, such as the Allen & Heath SQ7 audio console, it said.

Callers are handled with an AEQ Systel IP16 talk-show. Multiple conference systems were installed with connectivity for multi-channel AoIP networks, it said.

Three SystelSet + Handset offer caller control from a single device. Connected to the Univista TV corporate switchboard, the system allows interconnection with all areas of the channel.

Audio signals distributed between the Crossnet matrix, the audio console and Systel IP 16 talk show system and the wired intercom user panels rely on an AoIP network using Dante and the AES67 protocol, it said.

The Xplorer wireless intercom beltpacks and user panels rely on VoIP connectivity using the AEQ/KROMA protocol. 

UnivistaTV’s voice lines and the Systel IP 16 talk show and multi-conference system, including the Systelset+ terminals, operate with SIP-based protocol VoIP in HD Voice quality, the company said.

Installation, configuration, commissioning and training were led by OM Solutions, Juan Carlos Ortolan.

CYPRESS, Calif.—The Kern High School District in Bakersfield, Calif., has installed For-A’s HVS-100 video switcher and the Class X character generator for its new Career Technical Education Center to support its hands-on digital video coursework. The equipment is part of the multiroom video production facility.

The CTEC’s new video production space features four classrooms, including a studio, control room, audio recording room and lecture room with 15 edit bays. The HVS-100 is a key part of the control room, providing a custom console with four workstations. The studio includes three cameras, a full lighting grid, greenscreen wall and a track and drape system. There is also ENG equipment for off-site production.

The HVS-100 is used for both studio shoots and to switch multicamera productions from Innovation Hall, a 250-seat auditorium in the CTEC.

The Class X real-time 2D/3D HD/4K graphics playout system, meanwhile, features a LiveBoard option that allows the HVS-100 and other For-A switchers to playout its graphics directly.

Lisa Krch, instructor for the Video Production/Advanced Film and Cinema program at CTEC said that the HVS-100 and Class X systems are intuitive and not overly intimidating for the students. “It’s very user friendly and students feel comfortable jumping right in,” she said. “That ease of use is going to be a big asset in this teaching environment.”

TULSA, Okla.—In March, KOTV, the Griffin Communications-owned CBS affiliate in Tulsa, deployed a For-A FVW-700 telestrator to enhance its newscast weather segments.  

“When a meteorologist does a ‘First Forecast,’ ‘Final Forecast,’ or ‘Severe WX’ presentation from our WX Pod position, he or she will use the telestrator to help reinforce or further illustrate what they are communicating,” said John Quesnel, director of production for KOTV/KQCW.  “The meteorologists can also call up a live video feed from any of our seven skycams, 10 weather trackers or 15 live units to help point out or illustrate a key weather item.”

The FVW-700 helps KOTV clarify conditions for viewers regardless of the weather. “During non-severe weather, it could be used to point out weather phenomena or highlight certain weather data,” he said. “During severe weather, this could be storm path, timing, speed, direction, etc.”

The station also plans to use the FVW-700 to accentuate its ability to tell news stories as well as to cover local high school and college football, said Quesnel. 

Part of a duopoly with CW affiliate KQCW, KOTV produces 50 hours of live news per week, including 12 hours for KQCW.

KOTV uses a touchscreen with the FVW-700, but the telestrator also can support annotation using up to two wireless tablets via Wi-Fi for additional production flexibility.

This week, For-A America announced the appointment of industry veteran Satoshi Kanemura as president of the company, effective April 1. Kanemura joins For-A America from Sony Electronics, where he was vice president of professional products and solutions. Ken Truong, former For-A America president, is now the company’s chief technology officer.

During his 35-year career at Sony, Kanemura was instrumental in the development of several, new business initiatives, including the world's first 1080/60P live production system, 4K/8K and cloud-based production solutions, as well as Sony’s deep expansion into digital cinematography. While at Sony, he collaborated with director George Lucas on the first fully digital feature series, “Star Wars: Episode II & III” and with director James Cameron on the fully 3D digital feature series, “Avatar” and “Avatar 2 & 3.” 

Kanemura was also head of Sony’s Digital Motion Picture Center, which served as a focal point for the Hollywood community looking for hands-on experience with new technologies. He also led Sony’s U.S. efforts into xR virtual reality production, immersive education solutions and AI-based edge computing technology.

In his new role with For-A America, Kanemura will spearhead the company’s growth into new and existing markets, such as remote and live event production, distance learning and worship applications.

The company’s product line supports 4K and 8K, 12G-SDI, HDR and video-over-IP workflows. For-A recently deployed a single link 12G infrastructure built around its equipment at the New World Symphony in Miami, and its range of digital switchers has provided the flexibility needed by small and large live event producers across the U.S. to pivot to alternative programming during the past year’s COVID-19 restrictions. For-A has also been providing Japanese television broadcasters’ 8K technology for the past two years and will be doing so for the rescheduled 2020 Tokyo Summer Games in July and August. For-A has been awarded three Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards.

TV Tech Editor in Chief Tom Butts recently spoke with Kanemura about his plans for the company.

TV Tech: What attracted you to For-A at this stage in your career?

Satoshi Kanemura: For-A is well known throughout not only the broadcast industry, but also in a wide variety of production markets with products and solutions made by their unique technology. I very much agree with and respect their fundamental philosophy, which is included in the company name. 

Translated from Japanese, For-A means “grow the business together.” For-A prioritizes listening to customers to understand their pain points and to create a solution together that supports and enhances the customers’ business, which in turn leads to For-A’s growth. They continue to create very unique gear, which is indispensable as part of a total system, such as 4K, 8K, 12G, 25G, IP. 

These innovations can’t be produced without understanding the total customer workflow. I’ve learned a lot of their future directions: migration toward IP, cloud, AI, which is what customers really want but are challenged by now. I want to bring that ingenuity and enthusiasm to their marketing and overall communications in the Americas throughout my channel as well.

TVT: What kind of skills do you think are needed for leading For-A now?

SK: Communication. We have a tremendous team in the U.S. and around the world. And For-A has had great communication internally and with its customers. But what we need to take that one step further is to increase its depth and also the same level of communication with a wider audience. 

In that sense, we should also broadcast more what we can do and what we can offer to the market, in order to let customers know what we offer that’s truly unique, as our competitors have been. For-A has everything necessary to become a powerhouse in the Americas.

TVT: Media technology production is moving away from hardware and more towards software and the cloud. Is For-A well positioned for this trend?

SK: As mentioned previously, our future direction is to migrate toward IP, cloud and AI-based comprehensive solutions. Even currently, our gear manages the full spectrum of IP, including every standard from NDI to Dante AV to SMPTE 2110. We’re also partnered with leading companies such as ODYSSEY (developers of the Insight video server), ClassX (content creation and graphics playout technology), Variant Systems Group (sports replay and live event production), Media Links (IP media gateways) and Fujitsu (real-time video encoders).

We’re working with all of our partners to create the most integrated, cloud-based production system available to broadcasters and AV producers throughout the world, while maintaining our commitment to all of our current customers. All the future products will have a migration path toward IP and cloud AI.

TVT: Have the events of the past year prompted For-A to make any changes in its direction, vis-a-via the rapid move towards remote production? And if so, what are your plans at For-A to increase its business in this area?

SK: Remote production will not disappear when social distancing and other COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. All of our integrated systems are IP-ready and very easy to deploy for streaming. We offer flexible remote production options. We’ve seen a dramatic increase in interest in the “soft panel” workflow option in our HVS switcher series in the past year due to production restrictions caused by COVID-19. All HVS series switchers have optional browser-based GUI’s. 

There is no significant difference between configuring an HVS switcher for remote production and an established studio control room or mobile production unit. Any browser-based GUI is configured separately from the physical panel. Multiple operators—one local and two remote—can use the switcher simultaneously, so the production is not reliant on a single internet connection during a live event. Also, we are planning to support control and monitor protocol in the industry, to enhance remote capabilities.

TVT: What areas in media production in the United Stated do you want For-A America to focus on right now?

SK: I am most interested in expanding our presence within production companies, corporate A/V and schools. We’ve been so focused on our engineering and our current customers that we haven’t looked to the long term. And to me the area or market that’s missing, which we can serve very well, are schools—for the same reason we’re so popular with houses of worship: Easy to use, capabilities of more expensive competitive systems and close customer support. 

Also, throughout my experiences in the creative community, I personally want to introduce For-A’s cutting-edge technology into the creative community, such as the xR and VR domain, including virtual production.

TVT: How important are in-person trade shows and other live industry events to For-A?

SK: They have been very important to our success. For-A has participated at NAB, IBC, Interbee, SMPTE, InfoComm, SET and SVG events for many years. We look forward to seeing all of our friends in the industry and showing off our new technology when it’s safe to do so. 

At the same time, we would like to focus on DX (digital transformation) as well, not only in improving our website, but also with further enhancement of online training, seminars and promotion.

CLIFTON & ALLENDALE, N.J.—For-A and Telemetrics have announced they are teaming up on a pre-configured package that has been specifically developed for the House of Worship market.

The package consists of Telemetrics’ RCCP-M model robotic camera control panel and the For-A HVS-100/110 production switcher, which can allow a single operator to manage several Telemetrics RoboEye 2 pan/tilt camera systems for multicamera live streaming and IMAG productions, the companies say.

The equipment is easy to be trained on and adds high production value to daily services, according to For-A and Telemetrics.

WASHINGTON—Even in this COVID-crazy year, there is still lots of video creation that involves the use of production switchers. It’s easy to think of production switchers as being in the domain of studios, production trucks and other enclosed facilities that have shut down for the duration of the pandemic, but the ability to stream the output of switchers makes them key for delivering quality programming in a range of situations.

So not only are production switchers an active product category in this seemingly written-off year, they have thrived and continue to see innovation. One of the pioneers in combining switching with streaming is NewTek, which recently added the TriCaster 2 Elite to its family of software-dened live-production systems.

The TriCaster 2 Elite is capable of dual 4Kp60 mix outputs, a single 4Kp60 output with 4x 1080p60 outputs, or 8x 1080p60 outputs—all simultaneously delivered over SDI and NewTek’s popular NDI IP protocol.

“What sets the TriCaster 2 Elite apart is our groundbreaking ‘Live Call Connect’ feature that offers support for up to nine guests via Zoom, Teams, Tencent, Discord, Skype and more,” said Liam Hayter, senior solutions architect for the San Antonio-based company. “All run natively on the system with a dedicated multiviewer mode. Live Call Connect will also analyze the call and automatically separate out the nine callers into individual video inputs for use on the system, and this also includes talkback.”

Switcher manufacturers have embraced IP connectivity in addition to more traditional television standards such as SDI. One example is the Grass Valley Kahuna 9600 4K production switcher, which can be tied to other production resources using the company’s GV Orbit networking management.

At For-A, the company has seen good response to its HVS-490 3G/4K video production switcher. An ace at streaming applications, the HVS-490 packs a lot of popular streaming features into a small package.

“[The HVS-490] provides the most ‘bang for your buck,’” said Adam Daniul, director of sales for the southeast, south central and Midwest regions at For-A America. “It’s built for reliable 3G-SDI or 4K live production, and is ideal for image magnification [I-MAG] and live streaming applications. It’s easy to afford, easy to learn, and easy to use.”

LIVE & POST PRODUCTION

Blackmagic Design recently announced the ATEM Mini Pro ISO, a low-cost switcher that integrates live production into a post-production workflow. The ATEM Mini Pro ISO has a new livestream recording engine that allows all video inputs to be recorded, allowing a live production to be easily edited after the conclusion of the event.

“2020 has been an unprecedented year that has caused all of us to adapt to a ‘new normal,’ which for many of our customers meant pivoting from what once was a live event to now remote live streams or a hybrid model,” said Bob Caniglia, director of sales operations for the Americas at Blackmagic Design. “In that vein, we introduced the ATEM Mini Pro and ATEM Mini Pro ISO as affordable live-production switchers that facilitate remote workows and make it easy for our customers to create professional multicamera productions for live streaming to Zoom, YouTube, Twitch and more.”

Panasonic recently introduced KAIROS, an IT/IP-centric platform that offers an open architecture system for live video switching with input/output flexibility, resolution and format independence, and unlimited ME scalability.

“Unlike conventional switchers, KAIROS isn’t restricted by the number of MEs or keys,” said Michael Bergeron, senior product manager for live production systems at Panasonic. “The platform achieves higher performance by using the power and flexibility of its CPU and GPU, balancing total processing loads without the configuration constraints of traditional hardware-based systems. It also incorporates software that processes SDI, ST 2110 and NDI streams of independent resolutions such as HD and UHD to support the transition to live IP workflows.”

12G SINGLE-LINK CABLING

Ross Video has a range of production switchers that meet the needs of virtually any television facility. One example from the company is the Acuity, which can handle signals from SD to 4K, and will accept up to 12G single-link cabling for uncompressed 4K.

Datavideo has found a niche among smaller users that need maximum features packed into minimum space. The company’s latest model is the KMU-200, a streaming-friendly switcher that can be fed 4K signals and provides an HD output that displays “regions of interest” from the 4K image. In other words, you can make two 4K cameras look as though you’re using several HD cameras.

The KMU-200 supports an additional HDMI input for a computer with a PowerPoint presentation to add to a user’s live production, according to Rob Read, director of business development for Datavideo US, adding that the KMU-200 also supports vertical video as well.

“This switcher also has built-in dual streaming to two platforms, and provides 9:16 and 16:9 formats directly to content distribution networks that support vertical streaming, such as Facebook or Instagram,” Read said.

8K CAPABILITY

Although most companies have products that can handle 4K, at least a couple are pushing into 8K capability.

“Blackmagic Design introduced the ATEM Constellation 8K in April 2019 as a solution for customers who are currently working in HD or Ultra HD but want to future proof their investments,” Caniglia said. “The ATEM Constellation 8K is designed as an 8K, Ultra HD and HD live production switcher with so many features that customers can combine them all to make an incredibly powerful 8K switcher. In 8K, it features 10 Quad Link 12G-SDI 8K inputs, 8K DVE, standards-converted 8K inputs, 8K SuperSource, 8K chromakey and 8K multiview.”

Other companies have 8K on their radar, but are focusing on providing more features at 4K than making the next resolution leap.

“Panasonic currently offers the AV-UHS500 video switcher which is a successor to the AV-HS410 that operates almost identically in 12G as it does in HD,” Bergeron said. “All the inputs and outputs are 4K capable... for use in a variety of live production applications. KAIROS is not limited to any format, as it can work with 720p, 3G, 12G or computer monitor resolutions simultaneously. KAIROS does not currently support 8K; however, given expected increases to bandwidth and GPU processing power, 8K support for KAIROS is inevitable.”

USER PERSPECTIVE

Perhaps the bottom line on the subject of 8K switching comes from a user, Brett Casadonte, president and co-founder at GlobeStream Media LLC in Dallas, which was founded eight years ago to support live production projects.

“We chose to build our business around Blackmagic Design’s ATEM production switchers because we felt they offered the best price/performance of the various offerings we considered,” Casadonte said. “About a year ago, we began engineering work on a small remote integration production facility. When we were considering what switching hardware we would use, it quickly became obvious the ATEM Constellation 8K was going to be the best choice.”

But that doesn’t mean that there is high demand just yet for 8K production.

“While we are not currently doing any 8K productions, it’s great to know that as the industry grows into 8K, we will already be positioned to provide this service to our clients,” Casadonte said. “In general, 8K production is still in the very early stages, and there is a lot that needs to be considered, not the least of which is transmission and distribution.” 

SIMPLE NO MORE

There once was a time when video production switchers selected on-air sources, keyed in titles and performed modest transition effects. Not anymore. Switchers today do all those things, plus act as storage for still images, graphics and video clips, as well as provide control for video playbacks from servers and dedicated players. How much more capability can be built into switchers without overloading the operators?

“With the NewTek VMC1 system—think of it as a super-powered TriCaster—we added the ability to route NDI signals downstream of system, and we’ve brought this to the TriCaster 2 Elite, too,” Hayter said. “The NDI output matrix enables operators to drive screens and video walls on set, on stage, even to distribute NDI video and audio around venues. Like every other aspect of TriCaster, this is macro-controllable. The integrated macro engine on all our production systems can create shortcuts and sequences of operation with a single keypress.”

Hayter says NewTek has delivered visual radio studios where PTZ cameras, robotic dollies and tracks, and real-time tracked virtual sets work in tandem from a single keystroke.

“In the corporate space, we have projects where lighting, in-room audio systems and video wall solutions are similarly controlled from simple webpage buttons through our LivePanel controls,” he added.

It has been a strange year, and we’re all still figuring out how to do the things we want to do in this new environment. However, one thing that’s clear is that well-designed products continue to be useful and in demand and meet the needs of real users.

Broadcast equipment manufacturers started building IP capabilities into switchers more than a decade ago, and that has given this product category a leg up in the bid to stay relevant during the COVID-19 lockdown. That said, I don’t think there’s anyone who wants this new status quo to go on indefinitely—just that we should be glad that production switcher manufacturers were among the best prepared for our current streaming reality.

CYPRESS, Calif.—For-A has announced that Mobile TV Group over the last year has added four FVW-700 telestrators to its fleet of live production trucks.

FVW-700 advanced tools include automatic freehand formation, which uses a noise reduction algorithm to allow sharp angels as well as shaped smooth objects, and edge joining, which uses an edge-rendering algorithm that recognizes edges of lines drawn as outlines of a larger shape that joins them.

There is also a wireless tablet option for control of the FVW-700 via the network, allowing multiple operators or commentators to draw on the screen remotely and simultaneously.

“Telestrators are an important part of live sports coverage” explained Nick Garvin, COO of Mobile TV Group. “We’ve been standardizing with FOR-A telestrators in our mobile units for years because they are reliable and easy to use.”

PETERSFIELD, U.K.—InSync Technology and For-A have launched the MCC-4K-A UHD motion-compensated frame rate converter, the companies said.

The new frame rate converter, developed by InSync Technology and exclusively distributed by For-A, meets the needs of demanding live UHD workflows, offering advanced frame rate conversion and workflow tools for HDR/SDR (high and standard dynamic range) management, handling closed captions and multichannel audio, InSync Technology said.

The converter builds on the MCC-4K with new motion estimation algorithms that deliver more accurate motion processing. New format conversion tools enable high-quality results when moving between HD and UHD and SDR and HDR, the company said.

CYPRESS, Calif.—PBS39/WLVT-TV in Bethlehem, Pa., upgraded its control room last summer, which included the addition of For-A’s HVS-2000 Hanabi video production switcher and ClassX broadcast graphics system, which helped update both the station’s on-air look and its live production workflows.

The HVS-2000 switcher was equipped with 32 inputs—which can be expanded to 48—and a 3 M/E panel with 6 M/E performance, plus 4 MELite buses. It also has AUX remote control panels to feed set monitors.

A typical WLVT-TV production consists of a four-camera shoot, but some shoots can use up to 10 cameras, both studio and PTZ, which the HVS-2000 is able to handle.

A new function provided by the For-A gear is that operators can load and playback graphics from the ClassX with the HVS-2000, making them available during live productions. The ClassX supports the use of RSS feeds for updating election results and other data in graphics, as this new equipment will assist with the station’s coverage of the presidential election in November.

Tokyo, Japan, September 4, 2019 – In support of the many broadcasters still transitioning from traditional SDI to IP-based systems, the FOR-A® booth at IBC 2019 will include hybrid IP/SDI products, such as: the USF-10IP IP Gateway, the SOM-100 media orchestration platform, and the MBP-1000VS-IP video server.

An integrated baseband/IP control and monitoring system, the SOM-100 is also designed based on hierarchical architecture using Ember+ for a flexible system configuration to be used in a mixed SDI/IP environment. It delivers seamless interoperability between baseband and IP equipment and traffic management. The SOM-100 provides operation of a variety of video equipment such as SDI/IP/RS422 routers, multi viewers, video processors, tally devices and button panels, and monitored centrally from its GUI.

At IBC 2019, the MBP-1000VS-IP IP video server, the ESG-4200 test signal generator, the MFR-3000 routing switcher, the USF-10IP-SDI6-FS IP gateway, the MV-1220 multi viewer, the Media Links MD8600 video gateway and the MDX4090 IP video switcher & router are controlled by the SOM-100 in a SDI/IP hybrid system.

SDI and IP routing switchers are managed as one routing switcher in a virtual group. The SOM-100 can execute routing system control and process control, so that it supports collective operational changes of multiple pieces of equipment and executes time reservation. The system also features a web interface for easy access from multiple computers.

A 12G-SDI/IP multi-channel video server, the MBP-1000VS series is ideal for 4K editing environments, offering multi-input/output 4K and HD support and ingest, playout and 4K recording functionality. FOR-A is offering a range of MBP-1000VS interfaces for 12G-SDI or video over IP transmission, including 12G-SDI, 3G-SDI, and SFP+, to accommodate varying user needs for inputs/outputs and size of internal storage (SSD). The MBP-1000VS-IP includes a SFP+ port for 10 Gbps video over IP I/O. It supports up to eight-channel MPEG-2 codec or four-channel 4K XVAC™ codec and can switch channels from encoding to decoding as needed. Cypress, CA, April 23, 2019 – Social media and sports go hand in hand. So much so that when it came time for the professional video production team at Western Michigan University (WMU) to add a second replay system, they wanted something easy to learn as well as a system that would provide social media branding and video playout – all in one system.

LAS VEGAS—At last year’s NAB Show, For-A debuted the HANABI HVS-6000, a single link 12G-SDI production switcher. This year, For-A plans to showcase a range of products that it has developed that are able to support both 12G-SDI/4K and 3G-SDI/HD resolution.

Among these products will be updates to the HANABI HVS-6000. The 12RU switcher that has a maximum of 80 inputs/32 outputs or 64 inputs/48 outputs, now offers an optional board-mounting SFP connector that supports an IP interface.

The HANABI HVS-1200 will also be on display. The product is a 4K/HD compatible switcher that supports 12G-SDI that can be combined with the MFR-1000 routing switcher. The combination of the two products creates a 12G-SDI/4K production system. Building on the features of the HANABI HVS-490, the HVS-1200 uses a single cable for image processing and is configurable as both a 12G-SDI/4K and 3G-SDI/HD switcher. In HD mode it accepts up to 40 inputs and 6 ME performance; in 4K it accepts up to 10 and provides 2 ME performance.

Set to debut at the 2019 show is the DSK-4800 4K downstream keyer. The unit accepts mixed 12G-SDI and quad link 3G-SDI input; includes frame synchronization for all fill/key inputs; and support for up to 10-channel keying, with eight fill/key channels. There is also an optional DVE to enlarge, reduce or move input signals from one input over other signals.

Other 12G products that are expected to be at the For-A booth include the ESG-4200 12G/IP test signal generator and the MBP-1000VS 12G-SDI/IP multi-channel video server.

Products that offer support for 4K, IP and HDR will also get the spotlight during the NAB Show. The 4K-supporting switchers HANABI HVS-2000, HVS-490 and HVS-100 will be on-hand; the SOM-100 media orchestration platform, USF-10IP IP Gateway and MBP-1000VS-IP video server for IP video; the FA-9600 multi-purpose signal processor for live HDR production; and the entire USF-Series of universal system frames, including models that support 12G.
