LEXINGTON, Mass. —Signiant Inc., the provider of intelligent file transfer software, has announced Media Engine, a modern media management service built into The Signiant Platform.

Media Engine allows Signiant’s SaaS customers to easily search, preview and take action on media assets across all their Signiant-connected storage, from anywhere in the world, Signiant reported.

Using the Media Engine service, customers can perform federated searches across multiple content repositories, both on-premises and in the cloud. Results are immediately actionable via the powerful services available on the platform anchored by Signiant’s fast file transfer technologies.

Media Engine will be included with every Signiant SaaS subscription, expanding the value of its products ⎯ Media Shuttle, Jet, and Flight Deck ⎯ well beyond file transfer, Signiant said.

This expansion of the core Signiant platform also provides additional tools to help media companies create workflow efficiencies and streamline operations.

“Our customers need to easily access their widely distributed content and Media Engine makes that functionality available to any-size business,” commented Rick Clarkson, Signiant’s chief product officer. “Media Engine is a nimble, lightweight service built on the Signiant Platform, which is already widely deployed across the media supply chain thanks to its foundation of fast file transfer. The platform’s unique architecture enables us to bring a variety of powerful new services to market for our SaaS customers with a very disruptive approach — Media Engine is the first of those services.”

Within the intuitive Media Engine interface, users will also be able to mark in and out points to select a specific portion of a video asset ⎯ and then move only the clip of interest, commonly known as Partial File Restore.

In addition, Media Engine's proxy and metadata framework will make it easy for users to bring the power of cloud AI services to media operations. Today’s announcement is only the beginning.

“It was just over a year ago that Signiant acquired Lesspain to help enhance the capabilities of the Signiant Platform,” says Margaret Craig, Chief Executive Officer of Signiant. “Media Engine is the result of many months of hard work by our internal development team and our new Lesspain colleagues. We think the results will delight the millions of media professionals who use our software in their everyday work, and our plan is to continue to release other platform services in the future that further address our customers' pain points.”

Media Engine is immediately available to select Signiant customers. General availability is currently scheduled for July 2022.

STAMFORD, Conn.—NBC Olympics is deploying Signiant intelligent file transfer software for its production of the Games of the XXXII Olympiad, reported Darryl Jefferson, vice president of post production and digital workflow, at NBC Sports and Olympics, and Margaret Craig, CEO of Signiant.

Signiant’s software will allow NBC Olympics to leverage their talent and equipment back home in Stamford with remote production techniques, enabling them to provide enhanced viewing experiences to their audience much more efficiently, the companies reported.

NBC will use Signiant’s software to move petabytes of footage from Tokyo back to its International Broadcast Center in Stamford immediately after it is captured.

Signiant’s network optimization technology also allows for seamless transfer of the footage over standard IP networks, eliminating latency and packet loss, so that editors in Stamford can begin creating highlights almost immediately while the action is happening thousands of miles away.

In addition, the software will be used to transfer content, including advanced graphics work and pre-recorded footage, quickly and securely back to the broadcast center in Tokyo.

“Signiant is excited to partner with NBC Olympics for the production of the Tokyo Games this summer,” said Craig. “Fan expectations for more immersive viewing experiences are growing and with NBC Olympics’ remote production operations, they will be sure to delight their audiences with amazing coverage. We’re proud that Signiant’s software will play such a central role in enabling NBC Olympics to seamlessly leverage their talent and technology located halfway around the world.”

Jefferson added that NBC Olympics will be using Signiant’s Managers and Agents solution.

“File movement is central to all of our remote workflows both in Tokyo as well as in our broadcast center in Stamford,” Jefferson explained. “We are excited to see how it optimizes our transfers and provides greater resiliency across our domestic and international transfers. Signiant is enabling us to scale up to handle our Tokyo Olympics workload and our increased file sizes due to our HDR and 4K production efforts.”

DETROIT—Ben Manges has been working with the PR and media arm of the Detroit Lions since 2002; though back then, like most NFL teams, media production was a bare-bones crew of a few camera operators. Now Senior Director of Corporate Communications and New Media, Manges has witnessed an evolution in video production across NFL teams, moving from minimal staff who captured press conferences and occasional practice footage to multiple specialized content teams.

Ben Manges

For the Lions, a central aspect of that evolution has been their use of Signiant Media Shuttle, a uniquely simple yet powerful SaaS solution that enables the fast transfer of media files to broadcasters across the state while meeting the NFL’s high media security protocols. The Lions have been using Media Shuttle since 2013, and in many ways are ahead of the curve.

“The NFL has been actively making sure that teams are in compliance with their file transfer security protocols; teams are highly discouraged by the league from using Dropbox, which a lot of people use,” says Manges. “Media Shuttle allows us to quickly, easily and securely make video files available to news outlets and partners and still be in compliance with NFL security protocols. It’s a reliable platform that we’ve used for several years, and something our media partners throughout the state are really comfortable with.”

2017 NEW MEDIA EXPANSION

In 2017, the Lions’ initiated a plan to further expand their video production staff to better serve the team’s internal and external media needs. Part of that transition was Manges’ appointment to his current role overseeing all content teams including editorial, social media and video production, and managing relationships with broadcast partners and other TV affiliates throughout the state.

Matt Patricia, Detroit Lions Head Cocach

One of the first priorities when Manges started was to make sure everyone was familiar with and actively using Media Shuttle. Many of their broadcast partners are located hours away and do not have the resources to travel to Allen Park, where the Lions’ practice facility is located, to capture footage. From a public relations perspective, the ability to provide them with resources to accurately tell the Detroit Lions’ story is vital.

“Establishing a rapport and building relationships with our TV affiliates and TV networks throughout Michigan is central to my role, and receiving content from us is first and foremost what they care about,” says Manges. “Media Shuttle gives us a platform to easily distribute video content and take our story to viewers who are interested in what the Lions are doing.”

SIMPLE AND FAST

Moving large video files quickly and securely over the Internet to multiple locations requires sophisticated software with smart acceleration technology and layers of security. But that’s only the core technology. Professional media file transfer software also keeps files organized, tracked and visible to managers; allows for multiple users, permissions and languages; and enables different types of workflows that involve collaborating with an unlimited number of people and organizations, both internal and external. Software that does all of that can get complicated. That’s where Media Shuttle really shines for Manges and his team—in its simplicity.

Detroit Lions' Media Shuttle Portal

“Media Shuttle has been so successful for us because it’s such a user-friendly service,” says Manges. “A lot of other media file delivery services overcomplicate things. Media Shuttle makes something that should be easy, easy.”

Media Shuttle brings advanced capabilities often used in large-scale production to businesses of all sizes. As a cloud-native SaaS solution, Media Shuttle has the ability to scale to business needs and budgets, and its simple UI was designed to provide the best user experience for all parties, whether end users, IT administrators or media operations. And of course, it’s fast.

“More than anything, we appreciate that Media Shuttle is not only easy but it’s also super fast,” says Manges. “With the NFL, things are constantly moving and the fact that we are able to make this content available quickly without much effort makes everything that much easier.”

As the Lions look to the next season and beyond, they plan on creating and producing even more content for fans and further leveraging their Media Shuttle subscription for content distribution. They will be adding more users and more partners, and producing more content under tighter timelines. However, no matter how complicated the Lions’ media workflow gets, Media Shuttle will keep things fast and simple.

Megan Cater is Senior Manager, Digital Content for Signiant.

AMSTERDAM—TV Technology recently spoke with Cory Bialowas, senior vice president of product marketing on their plans for the IBC Show, taking place at the RAI Convention Center in Amsterdam, Sept. 9-13.

TV TECHNOLOGY:What will Signiant be showing at IBC?

CORY BIALOWAS: We’ll be demonstrating new capabilities across our entire portfolio of accelerated file transfer solutions for media enterprises. Support for local object storage is the big news for our flagship Manager+Agents, which is ‘behind the firewall’ software for automated file movement. Companies that own these systems are also adopting Flight in record numbers – that’s our cloud-native offering for upload to AWS or Azure, which can be connected directly to a M+A system. And there are lots of new enhancements to Media Shuttle, the Signiant SaaS platform that continues to be the tool of choice for people who need to move large media files fast.

TVT:Signiant recently released a new guide on FTP. Can you tell us a little more about that?

CB: That asset specifically focused on augmenting or replacing FTP, which is something that more and more of our customers are doing. FTP is old technology, it’s slow, and the user experience isn’t great. Our Media Shuttle SaaS offering is a next-generation solution that solves all of those problems, and at IBC we’re introducing new features that make it practical to undertake large-scale, enterprise-wide deployments.

TVT:What do you think the main themes for your customers will be at IBC?

CB: We’re expecting cloud technology to continue to be very topical, and local object storage is part of the same conversation. Media customers tell us that storage independence is a critical factor – so Signiant has a strong commitment to supporting a range of storage technologies and suppliers. And as always, customers are looking for technical solutions that meet their over-arching goals of business agility, cost management, and effective resource utilization.

TVT:Can you elaborate on your workflow for Azure and what customer reaction has been?

CB: That was just one example of how media workflows can be extended to the cloud, which is an area of great interest to our customers. Signiant technology plays a key role in the move to cloud technology, whether for a single simple process or the kind of large-scale cloud adoption outlined in our recent press release about Discovery Networks.

Signiant will be in booth 14.L08 in the RAI.
NEW YORK—Snippies is one of the largest creators of sales and marketing video in the world. Our database of more than 300 clients includes Amazon, Google, AppNexus, Microsoft and Boston Consulting Group. These companies and others like them rely on us to deliver everything from case studies and testimonials to product demos and consumer research.

Video production is a fast-turnaround industry. It’s not unusual for us to get a call from a client on Monday asking us to interview a customer in Iceland on Wednesday and then create a polished testimonial for use at a conference on Friday.

With a network of video journalists in every major city around the world, capturing high-quality content on short notice was never an issue. The real challenge was getting the footage back to our headquarters in New York in time for editing.

Snippies team utilizing Signiant’s Media Shuttle platformTRIAL AND ERROR
Over the years, we’ve experimented with different approaches to this problem. FedEx was a reasonable solution, but shipping a hard drive across the world is expensive and, most importantly, time-consuming. Footage wouldn’t arrive until two or three days after it was originally shot. FTP was fine for small files, but not for hours of full-resolution HD footage; not to mention the fact that many of our videographers had difficulty understanding the highly technical FTP interface. Getting them the proper training was an ordeal, and even when a videographer had done everything correctly, sometimes the FTP link would fail in the middle of the night, forcing us to start over the next morning.

After researching several large file transfer solutions, we chose to go with Signiant’s Media Shuttle, mostly because of the affordable cost and simple user interface. Media Shuttle’s SaaS architecture and pay-per-use pricing model allowed us to try it out without having to risk a ton of upfront investment buying software outright and managing it on our servers, as other solutions required. Also, Media Shuttle automatically scales to our usage and doesn’t have any data caps or file size limits.

Media Shuttle’s simple user interface and checkpoint/restart functionality were also influential factors. We needed something fast, intuitive to use and far less complicated than FTP; something that could pick up transfers where they left off in case of interruption.

SIMPLE INSTALLATION
Installation was relatively simple. Signiant’s customer onboarding specialists helped us install the “file pump” software on our network server and from there we set up our Media Shuttle portal, which is hosted and delivered by Signiant’s cloud software and infrastructure, allowing us to easily make changes to users and track transactions.

We were also able to add images and branding to our portal, so it’s customized with the Snippies look and feel. So far, we’ve worked with only one portal in the “share” mode—there’s also “send” and “submit”—which allows our field teams to upload and download files within designated folders, and for our New York headquarters to transfer finished videos to our clients.

Three months in, we are very happy with Media Shuttle and see the difference reliable electronic large file transfers make to our business and our stress level. As a global video production company that relied solely on FedEx and FTP, it’s clear this is a type of technology our industry will soon be unable to do without.

Tom DiCerbo has been managing partner and co-owner of Snippies since 2010.
