Part 1 of 2
After three years it was great to get back together with fellow engineers and exhibitors at the NAB Show in Las Vegas. Official attendance was more than 50,000 people but with the new LVCC West Hall and spread-out exhibits with plenty of meeting spaces, it was busy but not crowded.

Like many attendees I spent time catching up with old friends. With the repack over, the focus shifted to launching ATSC 3.0 and that will be the main topic of my convention review, specifically analysis of ATSC 3.0 signals.

Saankhya Labs
I looked for low-cost ATSC 3.0 receive devices such as USB tuners, excluding complete TV sets. New at the NAB Show were devices from Saankhya Labs in India. They are using a chip developed with Coherent Logic that can decode all DTV formats, including ATSC 3.0.

Fig. 1: Saankhya Labs dongle receiving ATSC 3.0 on a smartphone (Image credit: Doug Lung)

The company does not sell directly to consumers but was showing a smartphone with a built-in ATSC 3.0 receiver as well as a dongle that will work with a smartphone with a USB port. (Fig. 1 shows the dongle in use receiving an ATSC 3.0 broadcast from Saankhya Labs’ low-power transmitter that will be offered for use as a low-power ATSC 3.0 booster.) Tolka also showed a dongle it plans to offer for sale to broadcasters.

Airwavz
There were several products on display for analyzing ATSC 3.0 signals. The lowest cost options, both from Airwavz, remain the RedZone Receiver Plus (RZR-1400) and new TVXplorer 2.0 software, which was released at the show. TVXplorer 2.0 now includes the ability to decode and analyze Dolby AC4 audio as well as providing thumbnails of all the video streams with up to four concurrent PLPs. With the new version, the price increased to $2,595. The RZR-1400, which uses the Sony receiver chip, is $900.

Airwavz' TVXplorer 2.0 now includes the ability to decode and analyze Dolby AC4 audio as well as providing thumbnails of all the video streams with up to four concurrent PLPs. (Image credit: Doug Lung)

I think I was the first person to buy TVXplorer 2.0. I didn’t get it installed in my Windows 10 VM until after the NAB Show but had a chance to test it in Los Angeles. It worked fine, with both video and audio playing along with full details on all the tables and a service guide.

The software comes with a lifetime license and development is continuing. I was told an update might support the Silicon Dust tuner, which would dramatically lower the cost of the package and help keep it competitive with the alternatives. The dongle and software are available on-line at https://redzonereceiver.tv/ or from Comark or Unisoft.

Dektec
Dektec showed a new USB DTV tuner that is SDR-based, so it can handle multiple standards and looks like the Dektec USB universal DTV modulator. The device comes with basic software to decode ATSC 3.0 tables, but for a complete analysis, it needs to be paired with software like Triveni’s StreamScope XM or Stream Verifier.

The software does not currently include a spectrum analyzer but since the receiver is SDR-based it shouldn’t be too difficult to add that in the future. The cost is under $4,000.

ENENSYS
I knew ENENSYS was one of the leaders in developing ATSC 3.0 scheduler and gateway products but didn’t learn about their range of ATSC 3.0 monitoring equipment until I visited their booth at the show. Their “REFEREE3,” introduced at the last NAB Show in 2019, provides ATSC 3.0 signal characteristic measurements (useful for field tests) as well as stream analysis down to the frame level.

For more detailed measurements at a fixed location, they have the “Edge Probe.” I don’t have room to list all the features here. See www.test-tree.com/product/atsc-advanced-monitoring-probe/ for details on it and other ENENSYS monitoring products.

IPguard
Another item that caught my attention was the IPguard, which can monitor ATSC 3.0 STL-TP streams and switch to a backup in case of a failure. The switch depends on a flag inserted in the stream, which I hope will be supported by other scheduler/gateway vendors.

Promax
All the portable measurement devices I’ve described so far require a laptop or computer for operation. Promax was showing a new standalone portable in their Ranger line that offers ATSC 3.0 reception, including video and RF constellation displays and a spectrum analyzer. With tabs on the display, you can view table content and signal characteristics.

Promax ATSC 3.0 Ranger includes video and RF constellation displays. (Image credit: Doug Lung)

I was told it will support LDM, which could come in handy for field measurements. It also includes an Ethernet port for monitoring IP streams and logging data on a laptop. Pricing had not been set but was expected to be slightly above the price of their other Ranger units, which would put it in the $10,000 range. As of May 1, no data on this unit was available on the company’s website (promaxelectronics.com).

Triveni Digital
Most readers are familiar with the Triveni StreamScope XM ATSC 3.0, which has become the standard for detailed ATSC 3.0 signal analysis.

Triveni Stream Verifier (Image credit: Triveni)

They now offer a lower-cost product, the Stream Verifier, for around $4,000, which provides basic data on the ATSC 3.0 stream and a quick check on the quality and compliance of the stream. It needs to be paired with a compatible ATSC 3.0 receiver such as their dongle, one of the Dektec receivers or the Avateq receiver.

Avateq
Avateq had their line of ATSC1.0 and ATSC 3.0 monitoring receivers on display, including the AVQ-200. Avateq is now offering STL-TP analysis in their products.

One thing to keep in mind when considering ATSC 3.0 monitoring is whether the device or software will continue to be able to display video and audio after broadcasters begin encrypting streams. While all the tables and signal characteristics should remain available (unless the device has a key from A3SA, the ATSC 3.0 security authority), they will not be able to display encrypted content.

Tablo
Preparation for encryption caused Tablo to delay the release of their ATSC 3.0 gateway and DVR product until they could modify the hardware to support the keys. Since the key has to be in secure storage it could not be offered as a firmware update.

The introduction of digital rights management should not be an issue for most if it can be handled the same way NetFlix, Hulu and other streaming services protect their content. If implementation is more onerous, then it could slow the adoption of ATSC 3.0 by limiting the development of new ATSC 3.0 devices and the options viewers have to receive ATSC 3.0 broadcasts.

In Part 2, I’ll have more on my experiences with the TvxPlorer 2.0 program, using the HDHomeRun ATSC 3.0 gateway in a portable configuration; a description of the NAB session dealing with drone measurement of antenna patterns and RF system heating; and some transmitter- and antenna-related NAB Show news I didn’t have room to include here.

As always, I welcome comments and questions. It manages ALP (ATSC Layer Protocol) encapsulation, BBFrame real-time allocation, and outputs the resulting ATSC-compliant STL (Studio to Transmitter Link) stream protocol over IP.

ENENSYS SmartGate interfaces with an unlimited number of ATSC 3.0 signaling and delivery servers, including ENENSYS MediaCast, and automatically manages the ATSC 3.0 signaling from the different LLS (Low Layer Signaling), including the automatic generation and delivery of the SLT (Service List Table), and conserves on-air services descriptions. It supports all ATSC 3.0 modulation profiles and all modulation capabilities—from simple subframe and single PLP to multiple subframes and multiple PLPs—and LDM (Layer Division Multiplex) advanced management. Broadcasters can use a multitude of configurations to fit their different business models, by choosing from a large array of signal coverage configurations, robustness and targeting multiple receivers simultaneously within one RF channel.

ENENSYS SmartGate boasts ENENSYS’ patented seamless redundancy technology, providing the capability to switch from the main ATSC 3.0 Broadcast Gateway to a backup unit without any disturbance at the transmitter site and no de-synchronization, even in SFN mode.

This software-based delivery server manages any audio and video segments from encoders and third party files from NRT servers, generate the SLT and SLS signaling tables to enable a perfect decoding on the receiver part, and multiplex up all the services and signaling towards several IP multicast output, according to the company.

For a comprehensive source of TV Technology’s ATSC 3.0 coverage, see ourATSC3 silo.

LAS VEGAS—ONE Media 3.0, a subsidiary of Sinclair Broadcast Group has selected ENENSYS to help the broadcaster build and roll out ATSC 3.0 for 10 Sinclair stations.

Located at the broadcast playout center or studio side, ENENSYS’s ATSC 3.0 solution is composed of two core applications: MediaCast (ROUTE/MMTP and Signaling server) and SmartGate (ATSC 3.0 Broadcast Gateway). MediaCast enables the delivery of linear services, the NRT content and their related Signaling, in the ROUTE or MMTP formats. SmartGate ATSC ensures the allocation of the RF resources by scheduling the delivery of the IP streams in the different Physical Layer Pipes (PLPs). Thanks to STLTP generation, SmartGate also enables network synchronization for the Single Frequency Network (SFN) architecture.

The platform ensures effective and error-free packaging, delivery and signaling of linear services as well as Non-Real Time (NRT) content; from SD and 4K HDR services, to ESG and interactive applications. Flexibility and highly specialized features allow for the management of advanced use cases like targeted advertising, broadcast and broadband delivery and push content services. The software-based solution can be deployed on a dedicated server or run in a pure cloud environment.

“ENENSYS has worked hard to earn our trust, and we have worked hard together to define solutions that can evolve as we advance 5G Broadcast business opportunities,” said Mark Aitken, President of ONE Media 3.0. “Their strong roots in OFDM systems, broadcast and unicast, add unique insight as we begin to use the new tools we have in NextGEN applications.”

“We are very proud of supporting ONEMedia for ten of its first DMA ATSC 3.0 roll-outs in US” said Eric Pinson, Terrestrial Market Director at ENENSYS. This comes as a result of more than 5 years of active collaboration between the two companies and development of cutting-edge technologies at ENENSYS. With this project, we are entering a new Terrestrial DTV Broadcasting era utilizing a completely reconsidered network architecture that can be totally virtualized and bringing key advantages, such as maximum scalability, future proof, and rapid to deployment capabilities.”

For a comprehensive source of TV Technology’s ATSC 3.0 coverage, see ourATSC3 silo.

These new products allow broadcasters to save space and costs by migrating all their ATSC 3.0 Network Operation Center functions to the public or private cloud, allowing for cloud advantages like scalability, high-availability, and instant recoverability. These new products will be previewed at PBS TechCon 2019, and demo-ed at the ENENSYS NAB Show booth #SU6102.

The company will also announce a partnership with ONE Media 3.0, LLC, a subsidiary of Sinclair Broadcast Group to build and roll-out 10 of Sinclair’s first ATSC 3.0 Broadcast operations in the United States. The solution is based on ENENSYS’ new software-based product suite, designed to be easily deployed on a dedicated server or run in pure cloud environments.

ENENSYS is expanding its presence in North America by opening its first U.S. office, specifically targeting the ATSC 3.0 market. The company will host a ribbon cutting ceremony at its booth, #SU6102, 11 a.m. Wednesday April 10. Champagne and hors d’oeuvres will served.

For a comprehensive source of TV Technology’s ATSC 3.0 coverage, see ourATSC3 silo.

The technologies acquired enable wireless companies to offer one-to-many broadcast solutions, thus reducing their network bandwidth demands.

With the purchase of Expway, Enensys will hold nearly 60 patents, giving the company well-tested solutions to enable mobile operators to meet the skyrocketing growth for video content on their networks, it said.

The combined technologies of the companies will also enhance the offerings of Enensys in the terrestrial broadcast, satellite and cable markets, the company said.

[Read: Enensys Finalizes Acquisition Of TeamCast]

Multicast ABR and LTE Broadcast technologies from Expway will work closely with Enensys’ local ad insertion offering for digital terrestrial television, satellite and cable network operators. The combined technologies will also address the needs of mission critical communications solutions and connected and autonomous vehicles (V2X), the company said.

“This deal will enable us to achieve a significant milestone in our ambitious development plan by expanding our coverage of broadcast optimization solutions, regardless of the technology employed, whether DTT, OTT, satellite or mobile,” said Le Roux.

The acquisition also brings business benefits to Enensys, allowing the company to leverage strategic partnerships Expway has set up with Nokia, Samsung and other device makers as well as mobile operators and equipment vendors.

Combining the companies also strengthens Enensys regionally. “It [the acquisition] will enable a faster geographical growth, particularly with a strengthening of our presence in the United States, and a quicker adoption of Expway’s technology,” said Expway CEO Thierry Sergent.

Expway employs 45 people. About 95 percent of its sales come from operators like Vodafone, Verizon and Reliance Jio. Financial details of the purchase were not immediately available.

More information is available on the Enensys Technologies website.

SOUTHWICK, MA–Hitachi Kokusai Electric Comark LLC, a manufacturer and supplier of DTV transmitters, encoding systems, and associated field services, has signed a partnership agreement with ENENSYS for ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0 technology and products.

The agreement appoints COMARK as an authorized reseller and service provider of the ENENSYS hardware and software product line. COMARK will focus on the North American broadcast DTV market for ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0 solutions.

Comark Digital Services (CDS) was originally formed back in 1997 during the transition from analog to DTV, delivering a multitude of solutions to DTV customers. Earlier this year CDS was relaunched to assist customers with navigating the FCC repack and migrating to ATSC 3.0. CDS currently operates a full laboratory for equipment testing, integration, and customer demonstrations.

CDS has delivered systems to key ATSC 3.0 trials in the U.S., all of which included ENENSYS products, including:

ATSCheduler, an ATSC3.0 Broadcast Gateway that encapsulates MMT, ROUTE, ALP or any IP streams into an ATSC multiplex, inserts synchronization data from Single Frequency Network (SFN) Broadcasting, allocates data into the different Sub-Frame and Physical Layer Pipes (PLP) and generates STL output packets;

IPGuardV2, which enables 1+1 Automatic IP switching with bypass mechanism. Designed for IP architectures, it allows to switch between main & backup IP sources based on a set of configurable criteria in order to provide reliable IP transport and error-free streams, and

ATSCaster: As ATSC3.0 compression is based on DASH or MPU segment generation, ATSCaster is designed to create the ROUTE or MMT packaging and generation over IP multicast streams for live services, including the signaling of these services.

“This agreement formalizes a long-standing relationship between ENENSYS and COMARK. ENENSYS complements our current product portfolio with key technologies for both ATSC 1.0 and 3.0 systems,” says Dick Fiore, President and CEO of Hitachi Kokusai Electric Comark LLC. “The ENENSYS IPGuard, ATSCscheduler, and ATSCaster products provide our customers with a future-proof upgrade path for Next Gen Broadcast Television deployments.”

“As an already accepted industry leader in the emerging ATSC 3.0 deployments as well as ATSC 1.0 solutions, ENENSYS Technologies is proud to be partnered with CDS. Their reputation as a customer focused, technologically sound, and innovative company is exactly what we and the broadcast industry need for both today and into the future.” states Phil Whitebloom, Director of Sales – North America.

The system outputs the resulting ATSC-compliant multiplex using the Studio to Transmitter Link protocol through IP. The use of ATSCheduler enables the creation of advanced on-air architecture, including MultiPLP and Layered Division Multiplexing, which gives it the ability to target different receivers and provide levels of service like mobile and 4K/UHD fixed reception.

Enensys runs the ATSCheduler in its HDc chassis, which can embed up to 6x ATSCheduler modules in 1U; the same chassis can output up to six STL streams over IP.

The real-world test station, which is owned by Tribune Broadcasting’s WJW-TV, is testing ATSC 3.0 broadcasting under an experimental FCC broadcast license.

For a comprehensive list of TV Technology’s ATSC 3.0 coverage, see our ATSC3 silo.

LAS VEGAS—Enensys will unveil its ATSC 3.0 product line—including ATSCheduler and ATSC 3.0-compliant IP Guard—at the 2017 NAB Show. Korean terrestrial broadcasters, including SBS, have already successfully deployed the products.

Serving as a broadcast gateway, the ATSCheduler runs at the station or central head end where it encapsulates IP streams stemming from HEVC encoders that deliver compressed content over ROUTE or MMTP protocols, as well as from non-real-time servers generating signaling information and interactive applications. It outputs an ATSC-compliant multiplex using studio to transmitter (STL) link protocol through IP.

The Enensys exhibit will also feature IPGuard, an ATSC 3.0-compatible system that provides instant switchover from main to backup without interrupting transmission. To accomplish this, redundancy is required at the STL to deliver synchronized content to the head end and at the scheduler level to ensure seamless switchover in a single frequency network environment.

AdsEdge

ENENSYS will also demonstrate its TbEdge ISDB-Tb solution for use at transmission sites in Brazil and other Latin American countries. It receives and decrypts the DVB-S signal to generate a BTS for MFN or SFN broadcasting, and updates SI information. It can also reuse the DTH signal to build the ISDB-T multiplex to save satellite bandwidth capacity. From the DTH feed, the system selects the services at each transmission site to build the new ISDB-T/Tb signal.

AdsEdge, another Enensys product, allows insertion of pre-recorded regional or local content, such as ads, local news or weather, at transmission sites. A combination of server and splicer, AdsEdge is placed at the networks’ edge to provide targeted content insertion based on geographical location. This solution now includes Campaign Manager, a central server application that interfaces AdsEdge with the automation system, content suppliers and advertising agencies to ensure that the right content is received and supplied in the correct timeframe to the splicer.

The 2017 NAB Show takes place in Las Vegas, April 24-27. Enensys will be in booth SU7813.
LAS VEGAS—At the 2016 NAB Show, Enensys will unveil ATSC 3.0 DTV transmission products, including a route server, ATSC 3.0 scheduler and ATSC 3.0 modulator. These products, which reside between encoding/multiplexing and transmission, allow broadcasters and network operators to deliver live streams directly from an encoder outputting DASH segments, while managing the ATSC 3.0 physical parameters, Multi-PLP allocation, and SFN synchronization. Based on Enensys’ modular HDc platform, Enensys lets operators take advantage of the new standard’s many benefits.

Enensys will also highlight One Beam ISDB-Tb DTT network optimization technology. Designed for Latin American markets, One Beam ISDB-T/Tb allows a standard (MPEG-2) transport stream to be used within the delivery network, removing the need for proprietary equipment to deliver and receive the BTS stream. The BTS stream is generated in the last mile, at the transmission site, supporting SFN. Services can easily be monitored across the delivery network because of the standardized MPEG signal.

One Beam cost-effectively solves many ISDB-T/Tb broadcast transport stream issues by allowing the same MPEG-2 transport stream that carries content for DTH services to be reused for DTT services. From the DTH feed, the TbEdge system selects the services at each transmission site to build the new ISDB-T/Tb signal. It can be used across multiple regions to offer service regionalization.

The 2016 NAB Show takes place in Las Vegas, April 18-21. Enensys will be in booth SU6325.
