WATERTOWN, Mass.—EditShare this week said it has received SOC 2 Type II certification, an independently audited evaluation of an organization’s information systems related to security, availability and processing integrity.

Achieving the certification with no findings shows EditShare has met or exceeded the stringent standards set forth by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the company said.

The certifications, EditShare’s first SOC 2 report following its 2023 merger with Shift Media, encompass the entire EditShare organization as well as the MediaSilo, Screeners and SageStream cloud-native video solutions, the company said.

BOSTON—Collaborative video workflow solutions provided EditShare has named Brad Turner as CEO.

Most recently the founder of Turner Advisors, a sales and marketing strategy consultancy for mid-market software firms, Turner is the former general manager of Harris Broadcast’s media software business. He has held leadership posts in digital analytics, digital document management and information services businesses, EditShare said.

“Having previously served in the media and entertainment technology sector, I am excited to re-enter the industry and join a leader like EditShare,” Turner said in a statement. “They are at the forefront of cutting-edge technology from ingest right through to delivery and at every stage in between. I’m looking forward to working with the team to build on what is already an envious product portfolio.”

Turner succeeds Ramu Potarazu, who will transition from full-time CEO to membership on the company’s board.

BOSTON—EditShare has hired Grant Carroll as its new Senior Vice President for Sales for the Americas. 

Carroll was with EditShare for nearly 20 years as former Director of Workflow Design and Director of Sales before taking a career break in 2022. After working for Alteon.io, Cinedeck and OpenDrives over the past year, Carroll has returned to EditShare with responsibility for all sales from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. He reports to Tara Montford, co-founder and EVP Sales.

“Grant has been a central part of EditShare almost as long as I have, and no-one knows more about how to get the best out of our technologies. I am delighted we have been able to bring him back, and look forward to continued success with him.” Montford said.

LAS VEGAS—EditShare has announced a partnership with Atomos to bring camera to cloud workflows to EditShare’s MediaSilo, the leading video collaboration platform. 

As part of the collaboration, MediaSilo will be integrated with Atomos’ cloud connected range of camera mounted monitor-recorders, which can be attached to virtually any HDMI or SDI camera source.

The integration will be on display at NAB 2024 at both the Atomos booth (Central Hall - C4931) and the EditShare booth (South Hall Lower - SL8087), and will be generally available in mid Q2 of 2024.

In announcing the integration, the two companies stressed how camera to cloud workflows can accelerate the creative process. By shrinking the capture-to-edit time frame, editors can begin working on media instantly instead of waiting for hard drives or delayed file transfers. 

The Atomos MediaSilo integration helps users easily achieve those benefits by allowing them to simply a camera to a cloud enabled Atomos device via HDMI or SDI. After pairing the device via a Atomos Cloud Studio account and adding MediaSilo as the destination, users can select the target project and folder for media upload. 

Once the user hits record, proxy files will automatically sync to the MediaSilo project or folder that has been selected. Team members can then jump in to start reviewing the footage as it arrives. MediaSilo also creates dynamic review links that automatically update as more footage is shot, so external collaborators have one destination for feedback.

Techniques used in newsgathering have changed substantially in the past 20 years, and the same is true for live production. The same mobile technology that shapes what we carry in our pockets has made it faster and easier than ever to cover a breaking news story across town.

News and live-production operations have embraced mobile technology with a vengeance, and it is now widely used across the industry. And every year at the NAB Show, there are sleeker, faster and more capable products.

Staying Connected
Everything hinges on the word “faster,” as we want our news to be right now. The broadcaster who wins the “right now” race is probably the broadcaster that gets the most views.

“With the proliferation of news websites, apps, and social media, audiences expect updates to be shared almost in real-time,” said Matt Scully, director of product management at Dejero. “For film, television and commercial production, teams can leverage a reliable, ultra-fast connection to enable real-time collaboration with dispersed teams and accelerate delivery of content from the set directly to post-production, regardless of location—thus reducing the number of people required on set, and unlocking huge cost-savings.”

Scully pointed out that Dejero’s EnGo 3x with GateWay mode lets news crews broadcast breaking stories, quickly transfer files to prepare and upload packages while in the field, and set up high-bandwidth access points for multiple devices.

With the ability to get signals on the air quickly comes an increasing number of signal sources. Selecting among sources that grow in number can quickly cause a broadcaster to outgrow its source switcher, so TVU Networks will be showing its new solution: TVU MediaHub. MediaHub accepts various input formats ranging from SDI, NDI, SRT and TVU Grid to YouTube and more. It can scale and direct outputs to multiple destinations in formats such as RTMP, HLS, TVU Grid and Facebook. MediaHub can be scaled up or down as needed, and charged by the minute as it is used.

Election Coverage
LiveU will be at the NAB Show demonstrating techniques for election coverage, as well as the company’s latest cloud remote production and sports workflows. The LiveU booth will also host several sessions from leading LiveU EcoSystem partners covering a range of contemporary use cases and workflows, including cloud-remote production, content aggregation and AI-augmented production.

Virtual studios can make a small space seem much bigger—and the same space can be news one moment, the weather report next and sports after that. Making it all work seamlessly in a live production is the key to virtual production.

ENCO will highlight its Qimera live virtual production and augmented-reality solution for broadcast and production studios. Qimera simplifies the complexities of virtual studio production, enabling broadcasters and content creators to produce immersive content with ease.

“This year, we will highlight how broadcasters can utilize Qimera for augmented reality in addition to virtual production,” said Ken Frommert, president of ENCO. “We will also debut an AI-generated virtual anchor within a 3D space. This is an example of how Qimera blends the physical and digital worlds.”

ENCO will also debut enCaption Sierra, an automated turnkey encoding and captioning system, made possible through ENCO’s recent acquisitions of DoCaption, according to Frommert.

“There will be new features for Sierra that push the boundaries of what has been possible in captioning, and these will be announced closer to NAB. However, we are packing Sierra into an all-in-one system that includes a closed-captioned encoder along with live, automatic captioning software.”

Cloud Environment
EditShare will feature its cloud production and editing service called FLEX, including FLEX Cloud Edit and FLEX Cloud Sync. FLEX Cloud Edit provides media asset management, software-defined storage, and virtual workstations in a cloud environment provided by AWS. FLEX provides a completely open hosting environment, so users are free to use whatever editing software they prefer.

Collecting the news for a local station used to be done entirely in-house, using microwave trucks that beamed a narrow signal back to a dish on a tower at the station. Similarly, live production frequently used satellite uplink trucks to transmit a signal that was received on a big dish at the station—as much as possible, the signal and its processing was kept in-house. That way the engineering department and management could be sure that the station had as much control over the signal path as possible.

In the past 10 to 15 years, that has all changed. Now, news remotes usually use public cellular carriers to send the signals over the internet, often shipping them to cloud facilities for storage and/or processing. Today it is possible to produce a newscast in the cloud with only some anchor feeds coming from the station’s studio.

And don’t be surprised if even that changes in the next couple of years.

SUNRISE, Fla.—The NHL’s Florida Panthers video production crew here has transformed its workflow in response to growing demand for the team’s content following a string of successes, including its 2023 Stanley Cup playoff appearance—the first in 27 years.

At the center of the new workflow are storage systems and management tools from EditShare that enable a more fluid and secure workflow to create and deliver content for in-house screens and scoreboards as well as for fan engagement online and content delivered via the team’s custom app, the company said.

Working with sales engineers from 76 Media Systems, now part of Starin Marketing, the team developed a solution around an EditShare 256TB EFS300 storage appliance installed at the Amerant Bank Arena where the Panthers play, it said.

The ground storage network is linked and synchronized to an EditShare cloud implementation. The hybrid on premise-cloud architecture allows shooting teams on the road with the Panthers to upload content via a VPN, making it immediately available for post and delivery. The hybrid approach adds storage redundancy, securing content, it said. 

Key tools like FLOW workflow and asset management and FLEX cloud synchronization are core parts of the technology that make the system easy to implement and intuitive to use, said Dennis Docil, senior director of content services for the team.

“Before coming back to the Panthers, I worked for Ion Media Networks, and they were one of the first users of EditShare,” he said. “When we were looking for a solution, we looked at the market, [and] EditShare seemed to be the most user friendly for what we needed it to do. It gave us the slick workflows we need to keep on top of our exponentially increasing workloads.”

Supporting many video streams is an important aspect of this deployment. At game time, the EditShare EFS300 ingests live content from eight cameras and live coverage and shots from Bally Sports Network. At the same time, it also feeds the scoreboard and all the video screens around the arena, the company said.

The system also enables the video production team to generate a lot of content to engage fans via the team’s website and app. The Panthers also have a large retail shop alongside the team’s new practice facility in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Multiple screens at the facility create interest and excitement in the team and players as well as drive merchandise sales, it said.

BOSTON, Mass.—EditShare has announced that it was selected by AMP Creative to implement a new cloud-based system for remote work. 

With offices in Dallas and Seattle, AMP Creative uses video to create corporate learning and training programs. 

In developing the new system, the companies said that AMP Creative wanted to be able to make better use of its growing archive of content and elements and to provide better support for its designers in ways that would allow them to manage work in progress and create deliverables as well as providing secure archiving.

AMP Creative has used EditShare storage solutions for some years to manage its media. More recently AMP Creative moved most of its IT into the cloud. 

For the new project, AMP Creative turned to EditShare to provide the same transition to the cloud for media workflows.

To achieve that goal, EditShare used FLEX, which is the EditShare workflow and asset management platform for the cloud. It mirrors precisely the functionality of EditShare’s FLOW which AMP Creative already used to manage content and projects. 

EditShare FLEX was deployed to manage all content storage within AMP Creative’s existing AWS account, moving material between EBS and S3 storage tiers as required, and accelerating file transfers using CloudDat from EditShare partners Data Expedition.

The deployment accommodated the fact that editors work at remote locations, using Adobe Premiere Pro. Projects and bins are created centrally in EditShare FLEX, and high quality proxies are transferred to the edit workstations. Once packages are completed they are rendered against the original media in the cloud. As a result, AMP Creative was able to shut down its traditional server room, a significant saving for the business.

“The pandemic, and the changes in business requirements it created, were transformational for many businesses,” said Ofelia Yánez, president at AMP Creative. “Working with EditShare we were able to come up with a fresh way of working which kept our teams doing what they do best – creating stunning, innovative, engaging content – while allowing us to transform our business, reducing our footprint in real estate and carbon emissions.”

In September EditShare, a Boston-based provider of video content management, systems announced a merger with fellow Beantown company Shift Media, a cloud-native video solution provider.  

TV Tech recently spoke with Ramu Potarazu, who led Shift Media and is now the new CEO, replacing EditShare CEO Conrad Clemson.

TV Tech: Congratulations on the merger. What is your background in this industry?
Ramu Potarazu: My skill is in business leadership. My career began as an engineer at Intelsat, and I’ve driven growth in multiple verticals, which have included satellite and media, and also related fields like SaaS.

The great thing about the EditShare team is that they have a massive understanding and experience of the video industry, both in media and emerging verticals. I’m just here to empower them.

TVT: What is it about Shift Media’s product line that complements EditShare’s portfolio?
RP: They complement each other in a number of ways. EditShare specialized in very high performance storage, content management and workflows for content creators; Shift Media had the intuitive collaboration tools to share that creativity with clients, to ensure approvals, and to bring in new business.

EditShare was founded on excellence in hardware design along with innovative software; Shift’s products were cloud native from the start.

From a product point of view, there is a perfect mesh to bring end-to-end solutions across the entire video creation workflow. From a technology viewpoint, the strengths from on-prem to cloud are complementary and will result in even better performance in the future.

TVT: Can you provide some Shift Media projects recently completed in the broadcast/post space?
RP: DEFINITION6 is a commercial content creator that drives results through creativity, technology and analytics. By implementing MediaSilo, they can now manage and navigate hundreds of versions of assets across dozens of clients, from any location, simply and securely.

For All Elite Wrestling, we simplified workflows through a single solution to manage and distribute their finished assets with global broadcast partners, offering global coverage and consistency. Creatives get reliable access to the content they seek while AEW gains searchable analytics to track when, where and for how long each asset is viewed.

AGBO is another one of our clients. They are an independent studio known for films such as Extraction and Avengers: Endgame. Several of their teams use MediaSilo to track and organize projects from pre-production to post all the way to distribution and marketing. The role-based user management and asset repository allows the team to collaborate securely throughout the project’s lifecycle.

TVT: Apart from Conrad Clemson’s departure, are there any other personnel/infrastructure changes because of the merger?
RP: When two companies come together, there is inevitably the issue of roles that exist in both businesses. One of the key benefits of a merger like ours is in finding the advantages in synergies and efficiencies.

The new management team has been looking carefully at how best EditShare can continue to be successful and drive further growth in the future. Our conclusion at the moment is that we need minimal organizational changes to be as operationally efficient as we can be. Our goal, as always, is to be responsive to the needs of our customers.

TVT: Is the merger prompting EditShare to look at any other markets?
RP: In terms of business, I think it is really important to recognize that we are already very successful in many of the adjacent business verticals. Yes, of course we are well known in production and post, but we also have successful market penetration in education, corporate, advertising, houses of worship, gaming and others.

One very important part of the merger is that EditShare was already very successful globally, with a well-developed distribution network. Bringing the three legacy Shift Media products—MediaSilo, Wiredrive and Screeners.com—into the EditShare fold means that they too will benefit from the worldwide sales network.

That is good for the distribution network, giving them more chances to engage with potential customers. It is good for users around the world who can now enjoy the powerful benefits of the products. And, it is good for EditShare, not only bringing in more business but more feedback and user input, spurring future product innovation and development.

TVT: What was the response of booth visitors at IBC about the announcement?
RP: Visitors to IBC are serious about investing in future-facing technology. When they are making choices, obviously they look for the right functionality and use case fit. However, they also have to be certain that the vendor has a strong financial background and will be able to continue supporting and enhancing their products for the full lifecycle of their investments.

What we showed customers and partners with the merger of EditShare and Shift Media is that we have created a new business which is both financially very strong and supported by two excellent technical teams together. Our booth visitors were excited that all their favorite products continue to be available; all their favorite systems architects and technical support people are still in place; and we could show them a first look at our future roadmap of industry-leading innovation.

TVT: How many employees are in the combined business, and how many locations do you have worldwide?
RP: Both EditShare and Shift Media had their headquarters in the Boston area, and the newly merged EditShare will be run from Boston and from the U.K. Currently, there are a little over 120 talented people directly employed by EditShare.

TVT: What do you see as the biggest overall challenges in the M&E industry?
RP: The big trend is the move from fixed facilities towards a much more flexible environment. Sometimes you need to be working in a full-service post house, but at other times that is just not necessary. Neither the editor nor the client needs to commute into an expensive city-center location if remote working can deliver the same level of performance and functionality.

That means that the technology platform supporting the workflows has to be more agile. Content will be stored on premises or in the cloud. Proxies will be generated automatically at the point of ingest. Secure connectivity will allow remote logins from anywhere in the world to access just the relevant content. Simple distribution of review copies for approval means that producers can see work in progress wherever they are.

The answer to all these challenges is not to make the same old workflows work around additional connectivity: it is to find new, relevant ways of working that deliver productivity bonuses alongside the convenience.

MANHATTAN, Kan.—Kansas State University’s K-State Athletics has upgraded its existing storage network with the addition of more storage and cloud synchronization from EditShare. 

EditShare U.S. channel partner Alpha worked with the company to complete the installation, which is went online this month.

The K-State Athletics storage expansion includes an upgrade and greater capability for K-StateHD.TV, its official video department, which provides comprehensive linear, web and social coverage of all 16 men’s and women’s sports as well as delivers elements and production services to third-party media companies across the nation, EditShare said.

Since 2016, K-StateHD.TV’s broadcast and video board control rooms have used shared storage from EditShare. 

“We have been very pleased with the stability of the EditShare servers we have been using since 2013,” said Andy Liebsch, director of video services at K-State Athletics. “As we looked to the future, we wanted to make sure our servers were equipped to handle our increasing storage needs. We also wanted to provide a more robust solution for legacy content and backup. Alpha and EditShare provided the solution and a seamless integration and transition program.”

The new installation adds online and nearline storage on site as well as provides for storage and backup in the cloud with EditShare FLEX Cloud Sync. The upgrade also includes additional servers for the EditShare FLOW asset management database, which has opened up automated ingest and media acquisition, the company said.

WATERTOWN, Mass.—EditShare will launch technology upgrades and new functions to enable higher performance and greater connectivity during IBC 2023, Sept. 15-18, at RAI Amsterdam.

The company will highlight the addition of NVMe (non-volatile memory express) solid-state storage capabilities to its EditShare One for greater performance in intensive workloads and Swift Link, which improves data throughput performance between remote workstations and Elastic File Systems (EFS) by 10 times. In July, it announced a new EditShare One user interface, which also will be shown, the company said.

Based on the latest Gen11 platform from HPE, the NVMe module has 24 drives per node, with user-selectable capacities. EFS supports multiple nodes, so users are free to construct the storage architecture that best meets their business and productivity requirements. This new platform gives systems architects a high level of performance without sacrificing the protection and reliability central to the EditShare approach, it said.

Users at home or on a remote location connected via VPN can preview and edit both proxies and high-res media by using EditShare Connect with built-in Swift Link and its automatic latency detection.

EFS optimizes the connection around the network latency, delivering more flexibility for remote users without changing the equipment they use or the way they work. The user doesn’t need to know that they are on a high-latency connection; EditShare Connect will determine that for them and adjust accordingly, it said.
The new release ships with Ubuntu 2020 and is beginning to introduce SAML (security assertion markup language) within SSO (single sign-on) authentication for externally facing FLOW applications. Together, these provide practical and very effective protection against cyber-security attacks, it said.

Simplifying interactions, EditShare One boosts productivity thanks to an intuitive user experience at all stages of the creative process. BOSTON, Mass.—EditShare has announced that it has delivered two large-scale EFS storage network systems, alongside FLOW workflow tools, to clients in the UAE. The solutions were designed and implemented by EditShare’s systems integration partner in the region, UBMS (United Broadcast & Media Solutions).

In one of the deployments, a division of the Dubai Government had been a user of EditShare storage for over five years. As part of an upgrade to provide access to all users from a common location, it tapped EditShare for solutions for an extended storage node, a fully redundant backup site in an alternative location, and an LTO tape-based ARK archive sub-system.

In addition, the regional broadcaster MBC Group has implemented its first EditShare EFS storage network so that it can boost production workflows at its facilities. 

For the deployment, redundancy was important with two alternative locations. To handle this, an ARK tape archive is maintained in synchronization by the FLOW asset management software that resides on the EditShare storage network. The result is that content can be ingested as soon as it is shot, and it is immediately available to all the editors, whatever editing software they choose.

“The EditShare platform provides all the functionality that these two very different customers needed,” said Rayan Nasser, head of projects at UBMS. “We were able to configure the systems as each user required, setting up business rules for synchronization and archiving to provide the highly resilient, highly productive solutions they sought."

AMSTERDAM—De Telegraaf, the Netherlands’ biggest daily newspaper, has acquired an EditShare content storage platform to give journalists the ability to drive its online video services, the company said today.

Part of Mediahuis Nederland BV, De Telegraaf wanted a system built around Adobe Premiere Pro for editing and graphics. Fofic Media Solutions, which has provided the paper with many camera systems, suggested the EditShare platform because it could lower lifecycle costs and provide support for the Adobe products. The paper deployed and began using the new system within three months from the start of the project, meeting its deadline to stream video news, it said.

“Support for Adobe editing was very important to us because that is the preferred software our video journalists and editors like to use, and they can do so easily on their laptops, even remotely,” said Mediahuis video operations manager Patrick Knopjes. “When they saw the possibilities with the EditShare system and how it integrates with Adobe, they knew immediately it was what they needed.”

At the heart of De Telegraaf’s new EditShare system is an EFS300 storage node with 96TB capacity, an ARK LTO-8 tape drive and autoloader for archiving. I/O is an RTMP stream using VBOX connectivity. The included FLOW asset management software provides all of the automated workflows, including the ability to track content so material that goes unused for a specific period triggers an automated email prompt to be sent to the paper’s media manager with a notification that it should be moved to the archive, the company said.

“Working with EditShare, we were able to demonstrate that not only was the new in-house system superior in functionality, it was so reliable and easy-to-use that the video staff at De Telegraaf would not need continuing support,” said Frank van den Nieuwenhuizen, account manager at Fofic Media Solutions.

SYDNEY—Digistor and EditShare have announced that they’ve supplied new storage solutions to Chello, a branding and content agency that wanted to upgrade their storage solutions to be more reliable and to handle 4K footage. 

“We had just moved to new offices and figured it was the right time to upgrade our storage solutions,” explained Chello co-founder and creative director, Tristan Velasco. “Previously, we were using Synology NAS' but we knew we needed something that was more reliable at much higher speeds - particularly to be able to edit 4K+ footage. We had been speaking to a number of agencies that we knew in video production and EditShare had been mentioned a few times. When we got in touch with Digistor, it was the one they recommended as well, so we felt confident enough that it would be the right system for us.”

For the upgrade, Chello had installed 10GB Ethernet cables across their office so each of the workstations could support that connection speed, which meant that the storage solution had to allow creatives to work on video projects directly from the server.

Chello also required automated backup and archive solutions, via archiware, in order to be able to easily back up and archive projects. In addition, the storage solution had to be easily scalable and everyone in the agency needed to have remote access to the server through the company’s network.

“Put simply, the EditShare solution easily met all of our requirements and we are yet to even maximize how we use EditShare FLOW,” Velasco said. 

In total Chello purchased EditShare’s EFS software defined ecosystem and EditShare FLOW media management for their data storage solution and daily workflow. 

Typically, they use EFS to store all recent and live projects across video, animation and design and manage all project files via a templated folder structure. This contains all raw footage and source files including photography, 3D assets, illustrations, all project files and their various versions, delivery files across video, animation and design and production related files, the companies said. 

“When we were researching the benefits of EditShare I remember other solutions being in the mix but, based on the recommendations from Digistor and our own subsequent research, we felt EditShare was by far the best solution that met our needs at the time and into the future,” Velasco said. “The main thing for us was how smart EditShare products are and how the entire EditShare solution was put together for us by Digistor. Content security and availability is vital to professional users, and EditShare has added new hardware and software in this area, the company reported. 

The new EFS 60NL nearline storage provides 60 drive bays and nearly 1PB of storage in just 4U of rack space.  This offers secure storage for large amounts of content which is needed but not immediately worked on, ready to be transferred to the online servers with virtually no delay. The 60NL is also the first hardware platform to utilize the new EFS capability for erasure coding-based storage goals, eliminating the need for hardware based RAID.

Rolling updates to EditShare’s FLOW software platform ensure that the latest raw formats from popular camera systems like RED and Blackmagic Design are accepted, with LUTs imposed in real time, both on full resolution material and on proxies, boosting remote working using intelligent proxy management.

GBH, the largest creator for public media in America, recently invested in EditShare’s cloud solution, hosted in Amazon Web Services, to modernize media workflows across its post-production operations.

BOSTON—GBH is the largest content creator for public television in the United States, and through its co-productions, has a global reach. Such is the volume of work it produces, at any time there might be 100 or 150 editors working on various projects. Antiques Roadshow, Frontline, NOVA and Masterpiece are just a few of its very popular productions: it is responsible for as much as 30% of PBS primetime content.

Shane Minor, CTO of GBH, took on the role in 2014, and noted then that while there was a progressive interest in the cloud by the leadership, there was at the time little practical application. He determined that one of his priorities was to start the journey towards cloud infrastructures.

The driver for this was to find new efficiencies in the way they worked. Tim Mangini, senior director of production technology for GBH, noted “I was concerned that, when a production was done, they would load everything onto a hard drive, come here to GBH, then we could do a finishing session.

“We had drives going back and forth so many times, to create versions and promos,” he said. “It seemed to me that there was wasted energy; it would be better to capture once, ingest once, then publish many times. And our old workflows didn’t allow that.”

Then along came the first half of 2020, and the pandemic changed everything. “We have around 35 edit suites in house—but we didn’t want any editors in the building,” Minor recalled. “Security was the big issue for me. Our traditional approach was to make sure our media stayed inside our firewall, inside our building.”

GBH had to act quickly, to find a way for in-house editors to be able to work remotely, while maintaining the level of content security their premium productions demanded.

“We used a virtual desktop infrastructure to start that journey, to help users access the environment remotely,” Minor said. “But we were filling it up,” Mangini added. “Pretty soon we got to a point where we had more people on the VDI than it was designed for.”

The feeling was that, while it might not be great, it was a start. They developed a collaborative session feature, whereby producers could "look over the shoulder" of an editor for realtime exchanges of ideas. That was seen as a turning point: producers felt they could still be a real part of the edit while physically remote.

But ultimately it led to a broader debate, about what they could really achieve in a remote production world, and what benefits they could achieve in terms of productivity, agility and cost-efficiency while still retaining that vital content security. That is what led them to look seriously at a cloud-based post production platform.

“We started a couple of proof of concept trials with a couple of vendors,” Minor said. “We worked through what edit in the cloud might look like. We knew what edit on premise looked like, but we wanted to test all the various pieces and parts. Through this test we had some positive feedback from editors and it seemed like it was going to be viable for many tasks. So, we had some of our top editors really give it a hard workout to see what worked and where we needed to focus our attention.”

“The real win was when the team came back to us and said, ‘it was almost indistinguishable from being in the building and working on my edit station’” recalled Mangini. “And that was the holy grail for us, because whether the editor is sitting at GBH working with a director beside them or working from their home, the experience needs to be identical. For editors, this experience is absolutely vital,” he added. 

Rapidly, the evaluations showed that EditShare had the right answer. Their cloud-native solution that combines high performance storage, media management and remote workstations was already virtualized in the AWS cloud, GBH’s preferred supplier, and it had the security features that Shane Minor demanded.

“There is no question that, for us, the cloud is a secure solution,” he explained. “We put in the time and energy to make it a secure solution. We own the tenancy – we own the AWS space we occupy. We can see logging and metrics and do all the security things we would do in the building, in our cloud infrastructure.”

Not only that, it also offered excellent performance. “It had low latency and lack of lag,” Minor said. ”It gave our editors the immediacy and the high quality video that they were used to in a local edit suite—that was a real game-changer.” It also delivered on the promise of remote collaborative working, with people working from wherever they were, provided they had an internet connection.

“We have great internet, great connectivity to AWS,” he added. “That meant that the editors reported really phenomenal results: they felt like they were editing on a local station. That’s what we needed to hear to know that this is a viable option. Not one editor said ‘I can’t work this way—I’m going to come into the building’. It’s working for everyone.”

The economics were also transformed, because costs are only incurred when you are using cloud resources. You only pay while the editor is working.

More than that, you can flex the tools you give editors. “By virtue of being in AWS, we can have editors working on the latest, greatest high-end compute CPUs that they want,” Mangini said. “But if they need less power, we can pay less and just get a basic CPU for that part of the project.”

The two also pointed to another, sometimes overlooked, benefit of cloud hosting. Whereas with on premises hardware, you have to take an edit suite offline to upgrade the operating system or application software, in the cloud this can be accomplished instantly and automatically, with no impact on productivity. It means that cloud edit machines are updated much more quickly and much more frequently.

Now that EditShare’s cloud storage and workflow management is inside the GBH ecosystem, production head Tim Mangini felt that “the greatest advantage for me is in the workflow. We can have an editor in Idaho, a director in San Francisco and a producer in New York, collaborating as if they were in the same room. And it means we can ingest something one time, then everybody who needs it has access to it. Workflow has been a real advantage for us.”

Minor added “A large number of our productions are actually co-productions, and those co-production teams exist somewhere else in the world. There are times when we want to bring those co-producers into the environment and have them work collaboratively.

“That used to mean a lot of drive-shipping, or a lot of travel—co-producers coming to Boston,” he said. “This gives us the ability to expand really quickly.”

For CTO Shane Minor, security remained his number one priority, and the EditShare solution delivered. “For me the deciding factor was the tenancy, my ability to secure the environment in AWS. That, in the end, really drove us towards EditShare—it wasn’t something we had seen elsewhere.”

Mangini concluded, “There is cost benefit, workflow benefit, and security benefit, all stemming from working virtually in this way. It provides for a greater level of productivity. If we can make people more productive, wherever they want to work, that’s a win.”

LAS VEGAS—EditShare will unveil its new FLEX cloud solutions at its booth (N3008) at the 2022 NAB Show in Las Vegas, April 24-27. 

FLEX targets current media trends, in particular, the migration to a “work anywhere” environment, with ready access to content wherever creative staff need to be. BOSTON—EditShare has updated its FLOW media asset management (MAM) system with enterprise-level availability and redundancy to ensure continuous, high-level system performance and uptime and released new enhancements for its EFS shared storage system, such as smart shortcuts, system transparency and automation, the company said.

The FLOW updates introduce new Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve panel capabilities and proxy support that simplify working remotely.

“This release builds on the road-tested success of the high-availability capabilities in EditShare’s award-winning EFS media file system and the company’s commitment to delivering open systems that optimize the integration of innovative third-party solutions,” said Sunil Mudholkar, vice president of product management at EditShare.

“With a new enterprise-level high availability architecture in FLOW for both cloud and on-premises, we enable greater scale and resiliency and provide customers with an end-to-end workflow solution that maximizes uptime using the wide range of tools they already know and love," he added. 

FLOW’s high availability is achieved by giving its central database multiple points of redundancy to mitigate hardware or network failures that would affect MAM client accessibility during active productions. Its services are scalable and presented as multi-instance, redundant elements in the overall system, the company said. 

The panel enhancements for Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve bring the benefits of FLOW directly into the use interfaces of the NLEs, making it possible to access FLOW’s features without leaving the editing environments. Users can exchange FLOW sequences with both NLEs using the new FLOW Cuts List sequence import function, it said. 

Extended metadata support allows team members to add metadata information to sequences, including custom fields. AIRFLOW now shows sequence metadata in its user interface, and improved media relinking logic automatically imports and relinks high resolution source footage in a project’s complex folder structure after completing a proxy edit, it said.

Other FLOW enhancements include:

• Support for multiple proxy formats per clip
• Support for the latest version of DNA Evolution by Storage DNA
• In-app messaging and guides
• EditShare Telemetry to make it easy for administrators to share audio and monitor data with the company’s secure network ops center

The new EFS control maintenance mode offers new user controls to manage files in certain media spaces while restricting others to read-only access.  The company also has improved its Active Director Single Sign ON (ADSSO) to enhance enterprise-level user management.

BOSTON—EditShare has announced that public media producer GBH, a major content creator for PBS, has invested in EditShare’s EFSv cloud solution to upgrade and improve its media workflows in its post-production operations. 

GBH was an early adopter of cloud technologies for its broader IT needs. The adoption of EFSv now moves its video production into the cloud and provides the flexibility of remote workflows. EFSv is hosted in Amazon Web Services. 

The open EFSv platform facilitates both hybrid and cloud post-production workflows for video editors who create such critically acclaimed programs as “Nova,” “Antiques Roadshow," “American Experience, and PBS's World Channel.

BOSTON—EditShare has developed the FLOW Panel, a media asset management system designed specifically for use with Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve Studio.

FLOW manages media assets and workflows across on-premise and cloud-based tiered storage environments, providing DaVinci Resolve users with a media gateway to assets and associated metadata. 

FLOW features production tools to facilitate advanced remote workflows. This includes the ability to quickly organize assets into folders and cuts-only sequences; one-click imports of assets into DaVinci Resolve Studio; delivering metadata and content directly onto the timeline; and uploading of assets from DaVinci Resolve Studio back into FLOW with one click for review and approval processes.

With FLOW, Davinci Resolve Studio editors can edit with proxies, be they downloaded, streamed over VPN or played from central shared storage. FLOW generates the proxies and tracks the relationship between high and low-resolution files. A menu toggle in DaVinci Resolve Studio lets users switch between original and proxy versions.

The FLOW Panel for DaVinci Resolve will be available with FLOW 2021.

BOSTON & MUNICH, Germany—Adobe is partnering with both Cinegy and Editshare on new technologies that support remote production and editing workflows, according to separate press releases from each company.

Cinegy’s collaboration with Adobe has resulted in the launch of Turbocut, an Adobe CC plug-in designed to accelerate the editing of H.264/HEVC by utilizing NVividia GPU’s hardware decoder. Turbocut also brings Cinegy’s Daniel2 video codec to Adobe CC, designed for making 8K resolutions or higher easier to edit, per Cinegy.

EditShare, meanwhile, has an integrated system with Adobe that connects editing workflows into a wider media ecosystem with deep metadata tracking and workflow automation either on-premise, in a hybrid configuration or as a cloud-based workflow.

Developed by Tourism and Events Queensland, the international creative agency Publicis and rideshare giant Uber, the integrated marketing campaign showcased the biodiversity in the marine ecosystem via scUber, the world’s first rideshare submarine powered by Uber. EditShare’s live production workflow solutions were used to help capture the campaign’s maiden voyage and share the stunning 4K content across broadcast and digital channels in realtime, giving the global public the opportunity to experience the magic of The Great Barrier Reef, Australia’s largest and most valuable natural asset, at depths of up to 30 meters, with 180-degree views.

Michael Branagh, Group Executive Marketing, Tourism and Events Queensland comments on its impact, “The scUber campaign aimed to reset the story of the Reef and grow positive awareness in our key western source markets. We were able to achieve $130 million in advertising space rate from a KPI of $40 million through earned media alone by a combination of efforts across PR, social media, one to one media engagement, all while leveraging EditShare’s flexible media production technology with 95% of all stories on message and positive. The campaign resulted in three times more positive social sentiment of the Great Barrier Reef. Set on the remote Heron Island in Queensland, Australia, the live production faced unique infrastructure challenges. Big Planet Media Founder and Director, Lindsay McNeill along with EditShare’s Paul Hayes and Bayon Shahidi, designed a live production workflow that leveraged EditShare EFS media engineered shared storage and Flow Media Asset Management to facilitate the technically advanced, multi-format campaign on location. The high-performance, rock-solid EditShare workflow and collaboration capabilities allowed Big Planet Media and Publicis creative teams to capture and distribute live 4K and HD content from the groundbreaking scUber voyage in a myriad of news, commercial and press packages.

McNeill explains the nuances of producing a large live event from a remote location, “Our charter was to create an infrastructure that could capture live feeds in both HD and 4K from inside the scUber and make that content immediately available to two distinct groups, creative teams and journalists. Heron Island is a national park and bird sanctuary and an incredibly challenging place to do a technically intricate production like scUber. There was very limited infrastructure and no cellphone reception. We had to bring everything in.” McNeill continues, “With the benchmark being immediate global awareness and publicity, it was crucial for both the creative teams and journalists to have access to the content to prepare and distribute marketing packages and news stories in real-time in their required format, whether they are accessing that content on the island or from a creative office or newsroom located halfway around the world. EditShare gave us the live production media foundation to reliably facilitate content flow for both 4K and HD formats from scUber to the various stakeholders with embedded production tools to collaborate on creating marketing packages and press kits very quickly.”

Vicki Lee, head of broadcast and content, Publicis Worldwide (Aust), notes the importance of generating content in real-time for such a large scale project, “We had an extremely tight timeline to shoot footage of our scUber sub in water for all our broadcast, social and digital, launch requirements. We had 24 hours to shoot this footage, ingest it into the EditShare system and then edit immediately for material to be dispatched that night. Our deadline demanded that the footage be top quality as there was no time for low resolution ingest and offline editing, followed by the conform of high-resolution footage for grade, online and mastering. By forgoing the traditional workflow systems and leveraging EditShare we were able to successfully execute on our fast turnaround approach to this campaign without missing a beat.”

QScan reports can be delivered back to the same project space, confirming if content passed the desired AAQC settings. Content can be checked at every stage from ingest, audio, editorial, vfx, grading and finishing all without the content leaving the project located on the EFS media-aware node.

Quick Analysis Project

The new Quick Analysis option enables the user to start an analysis just by selecting a pre-designed template and selecting a file (or multiple files). By eliminating steps, there is no need to first create a new project, although that option still exists. Once the user selects a template and file(s), a new "Quick Analysis project" will be created. The project will take its name from the selected template. It’s fast, efficient and provides instant feedback on the integrity of your files.

Loudness Offset:

Audiences have long been frustrated by the sudden loudness of commercials. In the U.S., the CALM Act requires network and cable providers to broadcast commercials at the same volume level as the programming before and after it. Similarly in Europe, EBU R 128 is a guideline for loudness normalization and permitted maximum level of audio signals. Though QScan has always provided loudness checking, in the newest version, users will now be able to select an offset for loudness measurements, helping broadcasters easily adhere to legal regulations.

Mean Audio Phase:

The new Mean Audio Phase feature finds the average of the audio phase across the entire file, providing just one value per audio channel. The user can select what channels to compare when adding the threshold, ensuring the stereo audio file is correctly built for delivery.

Support for OpenEXR and TIFF sequences:

Support for OpenEXR, an open-source high-dynamic-range image file format created by Industrial Light & Magic, expands compliance testing capabilities for VFX facilities. OpenEXR files store high-quality, multi-depth images, can be comprised of lossless or lossy compression, support multiple layers, and hold a high luminance range and color. With QScan, VFX facilities can easily verify that the OpenEXR files are compliant.

DCP package identification and correct display:

Today, many studios distribute content to local theaters via Digital Cinema Packages as opposed to traditional film. Digital Cinema Packages are complex in nature, and are displayed in a visual tree chart similar to IMF packages. QScan’s new visual interface enables users to easily identify key digital files that comprise the Digital Cinema Packages and quickly verify that the correct digital cinema audio, image, and data streams files are stored in a given DCP when it is time for handoff.

Dolby Vision HDR analysis from Sidecars XML files:

For Dolby Vision HDR workflows, QScan now reads sidecar XML files directly. No longer do users have to embed HDR information in the video file. During the workflow, the video file and the sidecar XML both go through all production stages; HDR data is only embedded upon final delivery of the Dolby Vision file in J2K.

Integration with GrayMeta Iris reference player:

It is now possible to take the test results from QScan and visualise them in real-time, with reference player platform Graymeta Iris. Errors detected by QScan are shown in the Iris timeline and can be ranked by their severity.

Boasting ten main television and film stages and three additional acoustically-designed studio spaces, Sasani Studios is one of the largest multifunctional complexes of its type in Africa. The full-service studio is responsible for five of Africa’s most popular soap operas - 7de Laan, Isidingo,Scandal!, Skeem Saam, and The Rhythm Citizens. The intense production schedule produces six shows per week for each soap opera year-round, turning out more than 1,400 original episodes to keep viewers consistently engaged.

Approaching a decade on its original EditShare shared storage platform, Sasani’s head of engineering, Kim Smith, made a planned investment to upgrade to the latest EditShare EFS distributed scale-out storage platform, expanding the media management capabilities of its operation, which also features EditShare Flow production asset management and Ark LTO archiving, as well as Geevs for multi-channel ingest management from every studio. Underpinned by four new high-performance EFS nodes, the advanced media foundation further connects production and post with media management tools for automating complex transactions and simultaneously managing mass content as well as the various workgroup’s access across five distinct programs.

We kept track of the media contents in a spreadsheet. To pull content from the archive, our editors would have to look at an excel sheet and then manually search the hard disk that contained the project or rushes, and then copy the media to the main storage.
