STAMFORD, Conn.—NBC Sports is mounting mics in unconventional places to bring the sounds of NASCAR into the living rooms of sports fans.

Whether affixed to the front of a bump on a rear quarter panel or even directly inside a driver’s helmet, DPA Microphones’ powerful 4062 Omnidirectional Miniature Lavaliers have proven to be a “game-changer,” not simply a novelty, when it comes to telling the story of a race, said Matt Hogencamp, director of remote technical operations for motorsports at NBC Sports.

“In NASCAR, grams matter, and race cars generate brutal wind speeds, punishing vibration, extreme temperature shifts and showers of track debris,” he said. “We needed mics that were small enough to hide, light enough to avoid affecting aerodynamics and strong enough to survive extreme conditions lap after lap, while still delivering top-tier audio. The 4062 checked every box and gave us a real leg up in the sound department. Now, fans can hear the gritty scrape of a car skidding along the wall without crashing or the vacuum of ‘dirty air’ when one car tucks in behind another, the sound vanishing into eerie silence.”

While new camera angles and visuals are regularly incorporated into productions, audio is just as important, Hogencamp said.

“When we put a mic under the hood, our viewers can hear the engine in a way that changes how they experience the race,” he said. “It’s like they are in the car themselves. Even more revealing, viewers can now catch a driver’s unfiltered thoughts mid-race—the adrenaline-laced monologue they usually have on their own, as they hurtle toward a 200-mile-per-hour turn. These mics nearly disappear into the car but still capture everything we want.”

DPA 4062 Omnidirectional Miniature Lavalier (Image credit: DPA Microphones)

The microphones perform consistently regardless of where they are placed, which reduces postproduction fixes and allows engineers to focus on the dozens of other live feeds streaming into the truck, Hogencamp said.

“Durability is another win,” he said. “During multiday events, where crews have little time for repairs, the DPA mics kept running, meaning we had fewer midrace swaps and less risk of losing key audio moments. Quick mounting and low maintenance also made life easier in the high-pressure environment of race day, where every second of setup time is precious.”

For NBC Sports, the future of NASCAR broadcasting lies in this blend of technical ingenuity and creative risk-taking. With DPA on board, Hogencamp expresses confidence the audio side of the sport will only get more immersive.

“We’re always looking for new ways to put viewers closer to the action,” he said. “With DPA, we’re not just showing them the race—we’re letting them feel it.”

More information is available on the company’s website.

KOKKEDAL, Denmark—DPA Microphones will feature its new CORE+ technology for distortion-free microphone sound at the 2025 NAB Show, April 5-9, in Las Vegas.

“CORE+ is a game-changer for the world of condenser microphones and blurs the lines of what is acoustically possible in microphone design,” said Helga Volha Somava, product management director at DPA Microphones.

“With an advanced approach that ensures a clear and precise audio experience, CORE+ provides an unprecedented level of accuracy and detail in sound reproduction and sonic fidelity, whether recording or amplifying content.”

The company’s CORE+ technology eliminates the non-linearities generated by a mic’s membrane and electronic components and redefines what is possible when capturing sound. CORE+ neutralizes distortion across the entire dynamic range of the microphone, making any non-linear artifacts imperceptible and unmeasurable, the company said.

The technology elevates audio clarity and purity while reducing the hassle of unpredictable challenges of sound environments, such as when talent speaks or sings at louder volumes or in productions with multiple mics, DPA said.

Microphones with CORE+ eliminate artifacts and enhance the transparency of the entire sound image, it said.

The implementation of CORE+ requires redesigning DPA microphones, which the company plans to accomplish with by rolling out a slow update across its portfolio. The first solutions to be addressed are the 5-milimeter omnidirectional headsets and lavaliers.

Among the microphones planned for the CORE+ upgrade are 4060, 4061, 4071, 4661, 4066, 4266 and 4466. This will be followed by the brand’s miniature cardioid solutions, the 4088, 4188, 4288 and 4488, and the 4166 and 4062 omni. The company is also exploring the possibility of implementing CORE+ with some of its other products, it said.

All DPA microphones incorporating CORE+ will retain the same microphone specifications, including dynamic range and noise level.

DPA Microphones introduced CORE+ technology earlier in 2025 and will present it to broadcasters and filmmakers for the first time at NAB Show, the company said.

See DPA Microphones at 2025 NAB Show booth N767.

More information is available on the company’s website.

AMSTERDAM—DPA Microphones has introduced its 2061 Miniature Omnidirectional Microphone for applications ranging from broadcast studios and ENG to theaters, event venues and houses of worship here at IBC 2024.

“We launched the 2061 to appeal to audio professionals who are not yet part of the DPA family and are looking to upgrade their audio quality with a crystal-clear, no-frills microphone,” said Helga Volha Somava, product management director at DPA Microphones. “With its durable and rugged enclosure and premier DPA sound, the 2061 does not compromise on excellence. This is a great miniature microphone that is a worthy competitor to other well-known and widely used models.”

The 2061 features a new, simplified 5mm capsule construction that targets superior performance in the 50 Hz to 16 kHz frequency range, with 128 dB peak SPL. Like its predecessors, the 2061 has best-in-class speech intelligibility via the clear, natural DPA sound, as well as robust mechanical construction, the company said.

With an omnidirectional pickup pattern, this pre-polarized condenser microphone is designed to capture the human voice accurately with minimal coloration and a high level of fidelity and intelligibility from any direction. The DPA 2061 has a flat frequency curve with a soft 3 dB boost at 8 kHz – 16 kHz, it said.

The mic is not pre-tailored to compensate for any specific position in which a lavalier is commonly placed, which allows a sound engineer to capture authentic sound from any arrangement, it said.

The 2061’s 4.5-foot (1.5 meter) Kevlar reinforced cable offers flexible strain relief for resilience against physical damage. The mic’s advanced sweat-repelling capabilities and IP57 certification for exposure to water, dust and makeup further add to its durability and reliability, it said.

The IP57 international standard defines the degrees of protection provided by an enclosure. Testing determined the ingress of dust does not interfere with micro. Temporary immersion in water produces no permanent, negative effects. These features also ensure ease of cleaning and a prolonged life, the company said.

The mic has a fixed cap and includes permanent connector options that are compatible with 3-pin LEMO, TA4F and Mini-Jack, providing for easier use, especially in chaotic work environments requiring quick, smooth results, it said.

The company’s recently launched AIR1 Universal Miniature Fur Windscreen is well-suited to the 2061 for use in windy, outdoor applications. The SCM0030 and SCM0034 clips, and DUA056 series of foam windscreens are also compatible with the microphone, it said.

See DPA Microphones at IBC 2024 Stand 8.C42.

More information is available on the company’s website.

AMSTERDAM—DPA Microphones has announced that it will be showcasing a number of new products at IBC2022, including its 4466 CORE Omnidirectional, the 4488 CORE Directional Headset Microphones, the 4055 Kick Drum Microphone and the 4097 CORE Micro Shotgun microphone.

Based on the design of the company’s groundbreaking 6066 Subminiature Headsets, the new 4466 CORE Omnidirectional and 4488 CORE Directional Headset Microphones feature the brand’s popular 5mm round microphone capsule and are designed to accommodate all head types. A unique, three-point gripping system (above, below and behind the ear) ensures a greater level of security, while the flexible ear hooks provide continued comfort during extended use.

The headsets also share the same interchangeable cable and boom options as the 6066 Subminiature Headsets. This includes the 90-degree cable management at the neck. The headset frame, boom and capsule have a non-reflective surface for unobtrusiveness and ease-of-use for camera crews. With a high-quality, professional look, the 4466 and 4488 are available in black, brown and beige options, the company said.

The 4055 Kick Drum Microphone is a specialized mic for the low-frequency, high-SPL instrument. The 4055 differs from traditional kick drum mics in that it is not pre-tailored to any specific sound, allowing sound engineers to shape the sound exactly as desired. Able to perform in a variety of genres, the mic is perfect for televised live musical events and talent show-style productions that feature a live band.

Although intended for specialized kick drum-specific applications, its flat frequency response works well on many instrument types while delivering the renowned DPA sound, picking up the true, clear sound of the instrument, which is ideal for broadcast and streaming applications.

The mic also offers a linear frequency response, both on- and off-axis, which results in a very tight, natural, well-defined sound, the company said.

In addition, its asymmetric design makes it easy to position when slid into any size drum, and it can also be placed both inside or outside the kick drum, so finding the ideal placement is quick and effortless.

DPA Microphones will also showcase its 4097 CORE Micro Shotgun Microphone at IBC.

Featuring the same sonic qualities as the brand’s other supercardioid microphones, the 4097 CORE Micro Shotgun has been optimized to pick up speech from a distance.

Initially designed for plant miking applications, the 4097 CORE Micro Shotgun is ideal for miking in small spaces because of its small footprint and clear audio pickup.

When selected as part of the company’s 4097 CORE Interview Kit, which includes a lightweight boom and windjammer, it is particularly useful for single person production teams to conduct interviews from up to two meters away, the company said.

The 4097 CORE Micro Shotgun is a plug-and-play solution that allows users to get started quickly and employ their existing workflows for broadcast, film and TV production environments, the company also noted.

Its sonic qualities are particularly beneficial for placing mics in inconspicuous locations as it enables location sound experts to capture sound from anywhere on set.

Terminating in a MicroDot connection, the 4097 CORE Micro Shotgun can attach directly to a transmitter or be used with the company’s 4099 series mounts, clamps and clips, for easy mounting on any surface.

Additionally, the 4097 CORE Interview Kit provides professional sound in a lightweight package, which is perfect for current broadcast production needs. At just 330 grams without the transmitter, the Interview Kit is a much lighter, more flexible solution than traditional boom mic solutions, enabling reporters, videographers, and sound experts alike to capture sound from anywhere. The kit features DPA’s 4099 Cold Shoe Mount; DPA MicroDot cable; transmitter plate; lightweight telescopic boom pole; and a windjammer for outdoor productions.

The microphone can also be used to capture voice-overs from reporters, which are typically completed following an interview, the company said. As news voice-overs are often recorded in rooms or vehicles with less optimal acoustics, the mic’s directional characteristics enable it to dramatically reduce background noise compared to a standard omnidirectional lavalier microphone.

When used in conjunction with DPA’s lightweight MMA-A Digital Audio Interface, the 4097 CORE Micro Shotgun becomes a complete remote recording package. The interface is a high-quality, two-channel microphone preamp and A/D converter offering mono, dual and stereo capabilities. Compatible with iOS devices, Mac or PC computer, the MMA-A provides crystal clear audio for a wide array of remote applications.

During IBC2022 between Sept. 9 and 12 in Amsterdam, DPA will be exhibiting at Stand 8.F87.

For more information visit www.dpamicrophones.com.

LOS ANGELES—In the absence of fans at sports events over the last year, Fred Volger launched Sonofans, an immersive sports crowd performance system designed to help broadcasters replicate crowd noise. To do so, the Sonofans sound library used recordings captured by DPA microphones.

Sonofans’ library of crowd reactions have been curated from events over the last 15 years, recorded by DPA’s 4091 Omni Condenser Mic, 4560 Binaural Mic and MMA-A Digital Audio Interface. Volger had these recordings from previous recordings of USC football games in the mid 2000s.

During the pandemic, Volger has supplied those audio files to professional and collegiate baseball, soccer, boxing, football, basketball and bowling broadcasts on U.S. sports networks.

For some of the sports—i.e., boxing and bowling—Volger recorded new sounds at places like a park or a big box store, particularly using the 4560 Binaural Microphone and MMA-A Digital Audio Interface. Some of these recordings were also blended into sounds for football or baseball.

“It works great for creating the authenticity and realism of a crowd,” Volger said.

ALLEROED, Denmark—TV and film production crews have begun using the new DPA Microphones 4097 Core Micro Shotgun microphone in inconspicuous places to capture sound from anywhere on a set, the company said.

With the same sonic qualities as the company’s 4097 Core Choir microphone, the compact 4097 Core Micro Shotgun, is optimized to pick up speech from a distance, it said.

“We spoke with professional sound engineers to find out what they needed in their toolboxes and designed the 4097 CORE Micro Shotgun as a plant mic solution to complement their other equipment,” said René Mørch, product manager, DPA Microphones.

“Used in combination with our boom mics and lavaliers, the 4097 Micro Shotgun becomes the final piece of a complete microphone package to meet the needs of any TV or film production. Since the 4097 has the same sonic characteristics as all DPA mics, it is now easy to capture reliable, high-quality audio that doesn’t need dubbing or hours of mixing and post-production work,” he said.

The DPA toolkit of microphones offers audio professionals consistent sound, which makes it easy to swap signals from each mic without compensating for different sonic characteristics in post-production, the company said.

Built to stand up to harsh environmental conditions, the mic is IP58 certified for protection against water and dust. The 4097 Core Micro Shotgun microphone is configured with a MicroDot connector and an adapter for wired and wireless use. A swivel at the end or the gooseneck enables optimum positioning to achieve the best audio pickup, DPA Microphones said.

When used wirelessly with a transmitter, the mic is easily hidden in nearly any production scene, including tight shooting areas such as a car, where the mic might be clipped onto a sun visor.

The supercardioid 4097 Core Micro Shotgun microphone has a highly directional pickup pattern and offers low self-noise with DPA’s flat off-axis frequency response. Designed with speech intelligibility in mind, the microphone features 16 mV sensitivity and can handle high SPLs. With integrated Core by DPA amplifier technology, the microphone has low distortion and a wide dynamic range.

More information is available on the DPA Microphone website.

ALLEROED, Denmark—DPA Microphones has introduced a new addition to its mic lineup, one that can help broadcasters adhere to current social distancing guidelines, the 4097 Core Micro Shotgun Microphone, part of DPA’s new 4097 Core Interview Kit.

The 4097 Core mic features the same sonic qualities as DPA’s Choir Microphone, enabling operators to capture speech from a distance.

The 4097 Core interview kit features a 4099 Cold Shoe Mount with a 1/4-inch thread; DPA MicroDot cable; transmitter plate; lightweight telescopic boom pole; and windjammer. The 4097 Core mic can attach directly to a transmitter or be used with the 4099 series mount, champs and clips. The mic can also be used as a plant mic for TV production environments.

DPA designed the 4097 Core mic with directional characteristics to allow it to reduce background noise compared to a standard omnidirectional lavalier microphone. When used with DPA’s MMA-A Digital Audio interface, the mic can become a complete remote recording package, per DPA, with a two-channel microphone preamp interface offering mono, dual and stereo capabilities. It is also compatible with iOS devices, Mac or PC computers.

Additional features of the 4097 Core mic are a highly directional pickup pattern, low self-noise, flat off-axis frequency response, 16 mV sensitivity, ability to handle high SPLs, “CORE by DPA” amplifier technology, a MicroDot connector and an integrated shock mount.

For more information, visit www.dpamicrophones.com.
