Fremont, CA, November 5, 2019 - Blackmagic Design announced today that Astro Design, a Japanese manufacturer specializing in 8K product design, is using Blackmagic Design DeckLink 8K Pro as part of their new real time modular transfer function (MTF) measurement system. The new IP-8030 was developed with NHK’s technological collaboration and will be used by broadcasters to test 8K products and systems.

Astro Design is a Japanese manufacturer specializing in real time high speed digital signal processing and have a number of 4K/8K products. Their new IP-8030 will help broadcasters measure the resolution characteristics of the whole system including cameras and lenses by using the DeckLink 8K Pro to capture 8K feeds and feed them into the computer for testing. This will give TV stations, product manufacturers and rental houses the ability to test 8K workflows and products in real time.

Jin Sato, leader of business strategies department at Astro Design, spoke about how they developed this system: “What kind of camera should I choose? If attaching a lens and other accessories to the camera, would the resolution really be secured? These kinds of things are all done up to now by the eyes of someone experienced. There has been a demand for digitizing such ambiguity. Especially for high resolution cameras, people demand such standards.”

There has been a way to measure MTF, but it was very difficult to adjust framing and not real time analysis. “With DeckLink 8K Pro implemented in the system, you can capture 8K footage directly and measure it in real time while operating a lens.”

Before the DeckLink 8K Pro was released, this system supported up to 4K. “Since 4K/8K broadcast has been started in Japan, there are more demands for 8K support of this system. The DeckLink 8K Pro was the only option which could handle 8K, “ said Yohei Adachi, project leader of R&D.

He continued: “I found the DeckLink’s ability to embed ancillary data onto SDI very useful. A camera and a lens communicate with each other and the information for iris and focus distance can be sent to the camera. The DeckLink can receive such lens metadata embedded onto SDI, allowing for a customer to not take a memo manually, so the feature is really useful. The DeckLink also switches formats automatically as it reads Payload ID on SDI so don’t have to think about 12G-SDI or 6G-SDI. The DeckLink just recognize the difference of signals coming in.”

IP-8030 can be purchased with minimum configuration, just the application and license. For example, if a customer already has a DeckLink 8K Pro, they can use the DeckLink to capture and analyze the input video using the application. Also if the customer does not need 8K support and need Thunderbolt 3 support, some of other Blackmagic capture devices such as UltraStudio 4K Mini can be used for capturing. Thus, customers can choose the capture device based on their needs. Also, thunderbolt support means the customers can use their laptop or tablet.

“We would like to make these MTF values to be international standard. The more people who are involved in this video industry use MTF values, the more 8K contents with higher quality,” Sato concluded.

Fremont, California, USA - March 5, 2019 - Blackmagic Design today announced a major update for its DeckLink 8K Pro capture card, which allows its four 12G-SDI connections to be used for the independent capture and playback of 4 separate video streams. For customers working on high end feature films, this update for DeckLink 8K Pro also adds support for HDR metadata packing via SMPTE ST2108-1 and both HLG and PQ transfer characteristics via SMPTE ST2082-10.

This new update makes DecLink 8K Pro like a whole new product. The new multi channel support makes DeckLink 8K Pro as powerful as 4 separate PCIe capture and playback cards. Customers can now capture or play back any combination of formats and frame rates, all the way up to Ultra HD and 4K DCI at 60 frames per second. The new multi-channel support can be enabled by developers via the free DeckLink SDK. This makes it fast for developers to support the multi channel features of DeckLink 8K Pro.

Developers will be able to use the free DeckLink software developer kit to configure their software to use the 12G-SDI connections as independent channels for capture or playback, or they can enable them to be used for 2 simultaneous fill and key outputs as well. This makes DeckLink 8K Pro perfect for compositing broadcast graphics for sport and news in realtime. It’s also ideal for digital signage playback systems in which customers need synchronized playback on massive multi screen displays. For customers working on high end HDR projects, DeckLink 8K Pro with the Desktop Video 11 update adds new support for HDR metadata packing (SMPTE ST2108-1) and both HLG and PQ transfer characteristics (SMPTE ST2082-10). This uses metadata to provide a far more granular way of presenting luminance mapping which helps to ensure the content creator’s vision is carried throughout the workflow. Multisite Encoders, available in Single Channel and Dual Channel models, capture professional audio and video through HDMI and SDI and use either h.264 or h.265 (HEVC) codecs to efficiently compress one or two channels of video and up to 16 channels of perfectly synchronized audio. Feeds are then live streamed to the Living As One content delivery network, with the encoders automatically resending content that may be lost during transmission through a patented method, regardless of the duration of any network interruption.

The Multisite Decoder, which is designed with volunteer operators in mind, includes a simple to use video player that runs on dedicated hardware and allows playback and pausing of live video. Regardless of whether the video is playing or paused, Multisite Decoder’s advanced algorithms will continue to buffer live video ahead of time to a local SSD to prevent interruptions in playback. Fremont, CA — November 22, 2018 - Blackmagic Design announced today that Japan’s DeNA Co., Ltd. and its group company SHOWROOM inc. used a number of Blackmagic Design’s capture and playback devices, including DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G, DeckLink Mini Recorder 4K and Intensity Pro 4K, for their new VR streaming system called SHOWROOM VR. Through SHOWROOM VR, artists and musicians communicate using high quality VR media.

DeNA is a major venture company participating in various fields of business, including ecommerce, gaming, sports, automotive, heath care, education and artificial intelligence. It is also well known in Japan for acquiring a professional baseball team, the Yokohama DeNA BayStars.

The original SHOWROOM service was a live streaming platform started by DeNA in 2013 and it became one of the group companies. Unlike normal streaming platforms, there is a system in SHOWROOM where viewers can send in virtual items, called gifts, and the streaming musicians and artists get paid accordingly. In 2016, DeNA launched SHOWROOM VR and created a studio inside the company for VR streaming, allowing artists to create 180° 3D media.

Designed by DeNA’s engineer of technology development of system management unit, Takeyuki Ogura, the SHOWROOM VR is a custom built service using DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G, DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K and Intensity Pro 4K and NVIDIA GPUs. Built around the DeckLink SDK, DeNA was able to capture, synch, shoot, convert and streaming signals from two 180° cameras.

The two 180° cameras output two 2160p29.97 signals to a custom built PC, which houses the DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G, DeckLink Mini Recorder 4K, Intensity Pro 4K and an NVIDIA GPU. The left signal is captured on DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G or Intensity Pro 4K while the right signal is captured on DeckLink Mini Recorder 4K. The two signals are synced and converted on the GPU and sent out from DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G or DeckLink Mini Recorder 4K. The combined signal is captured and sent to live streaming software using DeckLink Mini Recorder 4K.

Fremont, CA - October 15, 2018 - Blackmagic Design today announced that Red Bull’s Gaming Sphere in London has been built on a live production workflow incorporating the URSA Mini Pro, Micro Studio Camera 4K, ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K and DeckLink 8K Pro.

The multipurpose esports studio has been created to hone the skills of players and those working behind the scenes at all levels to host tournaments, educational events and workshops. Systems integrator Dreamtek has designed and implemented the ultra flexible, low latency live production workflow to deliver high quality gaming content for big screens or streamed live to Twitch, YouTube or Facebook.

“Our principal consideration was the ability to record gameplay from anywhere in the space, and deliver that at the high frame rates that gaming fans expect, anything less just wouldn’t be acceptable. We conceived an IP and SDI infrastructure from which any camera, PC or console could be captured, recorded and played out,” explains Kashaan Butt, Dreamtek’s chief engineer.

The Smart Videohub at the heart of this network not only handles gameplay output, but also live camera feeds from a series of URSA Mini Pro, Micro Studio Camera 4K and 12 mini ‘gamer-cam’ units to capture players’ emotions and reactions. DeckLink 8K Pro capture cards allow high resolution playback over 12G-SDI. Handling gameplay at high frame rates is frankly essential in esports production,” continued Kashaan. “The Decklink 8K gives us the flexibility and the production values we need, no matter how many consoles we’re handling during an event.”

Multiple capture methods are used throughout the system, including SSD recording from the URSA Mini Pro cameras, multichannel H.264 encoders feeding into a streaming server and a series of HyperDeck Studio Mini for 4K recording. “Support for H.264 was a particularly important element in simplifying the workflow,” explains Kashaan. “Competitive games can last for several hours and we previously had to transcode to reduce the data capacity requirement on our storage.”

Multiple program mixes are produced with an ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, which gives Red Bull the capacity to cover several events running in different areas of the Sphere simultaneously. “As well as the four M/E busses, the ATEM’s chroma key controls are crucial, as we’ve included a studio space with bluescreen, where expert commentators and presenters can be overlayed onto the gameplay feed,” explains Kashaan.

“Red Bull has an international reputation for cutting edge content and this had to be retained as it progressed into the esports market,” he concludes. “We knew from the outset that a Blackmagic Design workflow would deliver the production values required, as we can rely on the equipment to do what it needs to, whether it’s acquisition, distribution, control or capture. Singapore - September 24, 2018 – Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve 15 was used to color grade 63 commercials in one month with the help of DaVinci Resolve 15’s collaboration workflow by RengeDragon Studio, an Indian boutique studio. As part of the 63 commercials, RengeDragon used DaVinci Resolve 15, along with DaVinci Resolve Micro Panel, for color grading the new Vaseline Sun & Pollution Protection commercial campaign.

DaVinci Resolve 15 was introduced at NAB 2018 in April and began shipping in August, 2018. The DaVinci Resolve 15 collaborative workflow dramatically speeds up post production because customers no longer need to import, export or translate projects between different software applications and work no longer needs to be conformed when changes are made.

“RengeDragon Studio was responsible for color grading all 63 commercials. As we were the only production house and not an outsourced vendor for the Vaseline commercial, we chose to edit, color grade, sound design, create visual effects/composites and finally deliver using DaVinci Resolve 15,” says Adolf Dsouza, Director, RengeDragon Studio.

“RengeDragon Studios has three senior colorists, two compositors, four junior colorist and finishing artists. With a staff strength of nine, every manhour needs to go into producing quality work. All projects enlist DaVinci Resolve 15’s collaboration workflow. Once the project has started on our office’s shared network, our visual effects artist, compositors and rotoscoping artist start working on the ungraded timeline with the reference LUT (that was prepared during presentation pitch phase) while the colorist works on color grading the footage in the timeline. They are all working on the RAW camera files in full 4K and there is no need to pull the shots separately for visual effects. Once the color grading is done, stills are sent to the visual effects and finishing department where they just apply them and deliver the final master. Since we are working with RAW files, the highest level of detailing remains with no data loss,” says Adolf Dsouza. He continues, “These highly creative processes often take the most manhours. However, when they are happening simultaneously, you save so much time!”

“Our client was very happy and impressed when they were giving us their feedback. As DaVinci Resolve 15 delivers looks fast, we were able to create many options with the DOP sitting in during an interactive client supervised session. Traditionally, a lot of time is wasted exporting and switching timelines in and out of different software. This often frustrates the client as waiting for changes to be made in order to compare options is a pain only people in post production are familiar with. With DaVinci Resolve 15, the changes are quick and comparing the effects in multiple screens is so easy that it really impresses our clients who have little to no background in post production,” says Adolf Dsouza, Director, RengeDragon Studio.

Pollution Protection Lotion’s commercial was also delivered using a Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve Micro Panel and DeckLink Mini Monitor.

Fremont, CA - September 4th, 2018 - Blackmagic Design today announced that MEPTIK, in association with Defacto Entertainment, is using DeckLink Duo 2 with Renewed Vision’s ProVideoPlayer 3 (PVP3) multi-screen media server to broadcast the National Basketball Association’s NBA 2K eSports league. The Blackmagic Design DeckLink Duo 2 provides PVP3 with capture and playback capabilities that allow for management of a large multi camera shoot and graphics insertions for the live streamed games.

The NBA 2K League is a professional competitive egaming league co founded by the NBA and Take-Two Interactive Software, which pits teams from each NBA franchise against each other playing the popular NBA 2K video game. Streamed live over Twitch to fans around the globe, the NBA 2K League’s studio, based in Brooklyn, includes 10 individual gaming stations and is shot in front of a live audience.

MEPTIK, an Atlanta based experiential design agency, created a customized media server system for the league based on Renewed Vision’s PVP3 system. The PVP3 system is a Mac based software application designed to playback and manipulate video across one or more screens, and has been used by broadcasters, sports teams, live events and church productions and installations for more than a decade.

The NBA 2K League’s PVP3 system is built around a single iMac Pro computer, and uses five DeckLink Duo 2 cards to provide all of the system’s capture and playback.

This system drives the majority of the video playback in the studio, including the league’s on set visuals, the cameras over each player, crowd shots, cameras looking at the gaming systems, game play, graphics and lower thirds. The combination of the Blackmagic Design DeckLink Duo 2 cards and PVP3 allows for the capability of doing all that through a single iMAC.

The DeckLink Duo 2 is a PCI Express capture and playback card that features four independent bi-directional 3G-SDI connections and supports SDI formats in SD and HD up to 1080p60. MEPTIK was able to use the flexibility of having four separate capture or playback cards in single unit, allowing them to customize the PVP3 system for whatever video needs the NBA 2K League needed.

“With the five DeckLink Duo 2’s, we put them alongside the PVP3 software to handle a total of 18 total chan- nels of SDI output along with four channels of inputs,” said Nick Rivero, co founder of MEPTIK. “The DeckLink Duo 2’s four spigots for inputs or outputs and full sized connections let us be incredibly flexible when we were designing this system. In this instance, we are able to seamlessly change formats, using 10 outputs for 720p and 6 for outputting 1080p, along with 4 inputs of 1080p.”

Manchester, United Kingdom - July 5, 2018 - Blackmagic Design today announced that ESL, the world’s largest esports company, delivered the inaugural live finals of the League of Legends European Masters, with a bespoke playout system built with a series of DeckLink Quad 2 capture and playback cards.

The playout solution handled a unique and complex live program mix, vision mixed on a live production workflow built around the ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K switcher, to a live audience, and to millions watching the championship’s livestreams worldwide.

“Esports broadcasting is rewriting the rules for content production, however, as with many developing industries, off the shelf solutions can often be out of the production team’s budget, or may fail to meet all of the technical demands of multilayered, multi source layouts that are needed for major tournaments,” explains Sam Deans, executive producer, ESL UK.

When ESL set about designing the architecture for such a vast production, Sam knew Blackmagic Design would play a pivotal role in the production workflow.

“We have developed our own custom built solution for VT playout, instant and slow motion replay, on air fill and key motion graphics and driving dynamic scenic LED screens, all of which rely on the DeckLink Quad 2 I/O hardware. Its ability to handle eight video signals simultaneously from a single card is a hugely powerful feature,” according to Sam.

He adds: “Whether turning to existing 'off the shelf' software or developing our own solution, it's becoming more and more apparent that built-in DeckLink support is the first choice for developers and reinforces our decision to embed it at the core of everything we do here at ESL.”

An instant replay server ingested four live video feeds and outputted a single feed in 1080p 59.94 back to the main production unit, where two ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K switchers worked in tandem to produce the program mix for broadcast.

“Then the primary switcher took live camera feeds, broadcast graphics and video game signals, and this was vision mixed on the ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Panel. When you are dealing with more than 18 sources and two independent fill and key graphics channels in such a rapid and pressurized environment, having the panel in front of you brings a real confidence to the mix.”

A second switcher operated by an ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel created a submix of ten POV cameras, which are used to capture player reactions during the tournament, and then sent a submix back over two SDI outputs to the primary switcher.

“The live production at League of Legends simply would not have happened without Blackmagic Design,” concludes Sam. “Not only do products like the DeckLink cards lower the barriers of entry to ultra high end broadcast production, but they also help us to solve specific challenges as we continue to rewrite the rules for content production and live broadcast in the digital space.”

FREMONT, CALIF.—To help bring high-quality soccer broadcasts to its clients, wTVision, a real-time graphics and playout automation provider, is using Blackmagic Design products like the DeckLink family of capture and playback devices to provide software-based broadcast and graphics.

DeckLink serves as the main capture and playback hardware to support wTVision’s software products. For instances, wTVision uses DeckLink as part of its sports, elections, production control room and master control room solutions.
