GRASS VALLEY, Calif.—AJA Video Systems has announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Comprimato, a live video encoding and processing software provider for virtualized and cloud productions and broadcasts.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

The move will unify the AJA and Comprimato development teams behind AJA’s Bridge Live family of IP streaming products. Upon closing, it will help accelerate streaming innovation to bring customers enhanced workflow efficiency, improved content monetization opportunities, and more, AJA reported.

As part of the agreement, AJA will acquire Comprimato’s comprehensive portfolio of software solutions. This includes Live Transcoder for video encoding and transcoding, Live Standards Conversion for flexible frame rate conversion, the Twenty-One Encoder SMPTE ST 2110 encoding appliance, and the JPEG 2000 Codec SDK.

Comprimato CEO & Co-founder Jiří Matela and the entire Comprimato leadership, development, and operations team will join AJA once the deal is closed. Comprimato will continue to operate as a separate brand under AJA and retain its European offices. Sales structures, including sales, channels, customer support, and currently shipping products, will not be impacted.

BRNO, Czech Republic—Encoding and transcoding software specialist Comprimato has unveiled an on-demand live framerate conversion solution as a cloud service for live broadcast.

The new offering is intended as a alternative to high-quality, motion-compensated real-time conversion requiring expensive hardware, the company said.

The company worked with motion-compensated-processing specialist InSync Technology to develop an uncompromising software alternative that runs on standard hardware and thus can be readily spun up in the cloud as needed, it said.

The result is a Comprimato Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution for framerate conversion, offering different business models to match user needs, including paying by the hour. The service offers broadcasters and production companies needing to move signals between 50 fps and 59.94 fps territories an alternative to traditional approaches, it said.

Integration with Comprimato’s encoding and transcoding services means that signals from a venue can be encoded in any format, including JPEG-XS, JPEG2000, H.264 or NDI, then as a cloud SaaS processed and delivered to any destination worldwide, ready for broadcast, it said.

BRNO, CZECH REPUBLIC—Nokia has announced that it is adding Comprimato’s JPEG2000 software codec to its 360-degree virtual reality camera Ozo. The cameras output of eight 2Kx2K sensors will be compressed and packaged into a single stream, which Comprimato decodes in software for live monitoring and responsive post-production for rendering and real-time views.

With the JPEG2000 software codec, the Ozo’s eight output streams and rendered together into an immersive virtual environment. The decoder uses Comprimato’s GPU accelerated processing, allowing users to see what is being shot. The consistency of the JPEG2000 encoding ensures post-production stitching is seamless, according to Comprimato.

Comprimato will showcase its JPEG2000 software codec at the upcoming 2016 NAB Show at its booth, SU13305.

NEVADA CITY, CALIF.—Telestream and Comprimato have announced a deal that now makes Comprimato’s JPEG2000 software codec available as a component option for Telestream’s Vantage systems operating on Lightspeed server hardware. The Comprimato system is designed to accelerate the decoding and encoding of JPEG2000-based video, utilizing the Graphics Processing Unit power of Telestream’s Lightspeed servers, according to the digital media tools provider.

This new integration allows a Vantage system with a Comprimato option to reduce workflow processing by as much as 20 percent when decoding JPEG2000 contained in IMF, AS02 or MXF OP1a media files, says Telestream. When encoding into IMF, ASO2 or MXF OP1a files, Comprimato can reportedly reduce workflow processing time up to 12x.

BRNO, CZECH REPUBLIC—Vizrt and Comprimato have come to agreement to make Comprimator’s JPEG2000 software encoder available on installed Viz Engines. This new integration will allow users to create JPEG2000 streams, including ones in Ultra HD, without additional hardware or external devices.

JPEG2000 is a codec that uses wavelet compression for efficiency and image quality. With its core design, the JPEG2000 allows Ultra HD resolution videos to be compressed without titling.

“Adding our compact software module to the Viz Engine means users can configure it for JPEG2000 streaming with no additional hardware: just the Nvidia graphics card in the PC,” said Jiri Matela, CEO of Comprimato.
