NEW YORK—The Broadcasters Foundation of America (BFOA) has announced that its annual BFOA Giving Day will take place on Thursday, June 25 and is urging the broadcast industry to participate in a one-day fundraising effort to provide critical financial assistance to radio and television professionals facing acute hardship due to catastrophic illness, disaster, or other life-altering circumstances.

“We have a responsibility to stand beside our fellow broadcasters when devastating illness or catastrophe turns their lives upside down,” said Tim McCarthy, president of the Broadcasters Foundation. “Giving Day is an opportunity for every broadcaster — individuals and companies alike — to make a meaningful difference for colleagues facing unimaginable challenges. Our industry takes care of its own, and together we can ensure no broadcaster faces hardship alone.”

The BFOA has achieved the highest scores from two independent organizations that track commitment to accountability and impact for 501(c)(3) charities: a Platinum Seal of Transparency from Candid and a 100% Give With Confidence Score and a Four-Star Rating from Charity Navigator.

The Giving Day campaign seeks support from individuals and companies across broadcasting while raising awareness of the BFOA’s mission of helping industry colleagues when they need it most.

This year’s BFOA Giving Day coincides with the BFOA’s Media Mixer, which connects emerging professionals with senior broadcast executives. During this Media Mixer, legendary radio executive Dan Mason will share lessons and insights from his extraordinary career from behind the microphone to the helm of CBS Radio.

Anyone who wants to support the BFOA’s financial lifeline mission for past and current colleagues in our broadcast community on BFOA Giving Day, or any day, may click here.

Scripps Co.’s ambitious addition of national and local live sports content to its Ion Media network and its local stations. Before that, Lawlor led the Scripps Local Media division for 14 years, a period of rapid growth that saw the station group expand from 10 to 61 local TV stations.

The Broadcasters Foundation Golden Mic Award is presented annually to an individual for their excellence in and commitment to broadcasting, and their ongoing service to the community at large. The BFOA is the only charity devoted exclusively to helping broadcasters in need from illness or tragedy.

“I am honored at this recognition from the Broadcasters Foundation, a charity that brings much-needed help to our colleagues,” Lawlor said. “I have been a supporter of the Foundation and serve on their Board, and I know first-hand the heartbreaking stories of those who we help.”

Lawlor was named B+C Broadcaster of the Year in 2011, as well as one of the “80 Most Influential People in Television.” He was named “Broadcast Television’s Best Leader” by Radio * Television Business Report. He was the driving force behind Scripps’ launches of such national series as “Right This Minute” and “The List.”

He serves on the boards of the Broadcasters Foundation and the National Association of Broadcasters Leadership Foundation.

“Brian is a leader in broadcasting, who guided Scripps to expand their portfolio of stations and become one of the largest television groups in America,” BOFA chairman Scott Herman said. “His hard work at advancing the mission of the Broadcasters Foundation, as well as his contributions to the television industry, makes him a perfect candidate to receive the Golden Mic Award.”

Added foundation President Tim McCarthy: “Brian is a highly respected member of the television broadcasting community and a staunch supporter of the Broadcasters Foundation. We are delighted to bestow on him this well-deserved honor.”

For more information about the Broadcasters Foundation, including how to apply for aid or make a donation, visit broadcastersfoundation.org, or contact (212) 373-8250 or info@thebfoa.org.

It followed the damage wrought by Hurricane Helene, which came ashore on Sept. 26 and cut a wide path of destruction as it moved north through Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. As of Oct. 5, the death toll from Helene stood at 227, according to the AP, making it the deadliest hurricane to hit the U.S. mainland since Hurricane Katrina struck the New Orleans area in 2005.

“We are grateful to John and Red Apple Media for their generous patronage of our charitable mission,” Broadcasters Foundation President Tim McCarthy said of Catsimatidis’ donation. “It is with the support of industry leaders like John that the foundation can provide assistance to those in our industry who need it most, including in times of emergency. The foundation’s Emergency Grant Program is set up with a streamlined vetting process that enables the charity to get emergency funds to those in desperate need quickly.

“Broken pipes, power outages, displacement, and more have brought devastation to many of our colleagues,” Broadcasters Foundation president Tim McCarthy said. “We’ve already approved over half a dozen requests and that’s just the beginning. Based on the number of requests from previous disasters, we know that figure will grow significantly as those impacted by the storm assess their damage and determine the costs.

“We’ve also reached out to groups and state associations in the areas impacted by Hurricane Helene and asked them to inform their employees and members that we are here to provide aid to those who need it most,” McCarthy added. “Our colleagues cannot be left alone to struggle.”

Individuals in radio and television may apply for emergency aid to see if they qualify by clicking here.

McLaughlin Lifetime Achievement Award. The annual gala is a major fundraiser for the Broadcasters Foundation of America, which provides financial assistance to broadcasters in acute need.

(L to R): Scott Herman, Chairman of the BFOA; Jordan Wertlieb, and Tim McCarthy, President of the BFOA. (Image credit: BFOA)

The evening saw the return of Emmy-winning broadcast journalist and nationally syndicated talk show host Soledad O’Brien as emcee of the gala. A terrific performance by Pete Caldera regaled the audience with renditions of Frank Sinatra standards, including a dedication of I Did It My Way to Phil Lombardo, the longtime Chairman and then Chairman Emeritus of the BFOA, who passed away in January.

One of the most poignant moments during the event was a video of one of the Foundation’s grant recipients, who bravely shared her story. The video was a real-life example of how anyone’s life can change in a heartbeat. Luke Commare, a TV station General Sales Manager, developed a brain tumor that took his life, leaving his wife Terrie with four children and no income. The Broadcasters Foundation stepped in with a monthly grant to help the family make ends meet. This year, the Foundation will award approximately $1.8 million.

For more information on the Broadcasters Foundation, to donate or apply for aid, please visit www.broadcastersfoundation.org, call 212-373-8250, or email info@thebfoa.org.

The Broadcasters Foundation of America launched its annual Year-End Giving Campaign this week. The 501c3 charity provides financial aid to broadcast radio and television colleagues who are in need due to debilitating illness, accident, or tragedy. The Year-End Giving Campaign asks for personal tax-deductible donations to the Guardian Fund. Corporate donations can be given to the Angel Initiative, which is also tax deductible.

“Life can change in a heartbeat, and exorbitant medical bills can leave one of our colleagues in broadcasting in desperate need of assistance,” stated Scott Herman, Chairman of the Broadcasters Foundation. “I’m asking everyone in radio and television to consider a donation, in any amount, so that we can continue to provide assistance to those in our industry who need it most.”

“The Broadcasters Foundation is often the last hope for our peers suffering from severe illness or recovering from disaster,” said Tim McCarthy, President of the Broadcasters Foundation. “To date, we have never turned away a broadcaster who qualified for aid. Donations, in any amount, can ensure that the Broadcasters Foundation continues that track record.”

The Broadcasters Foundation has distributed more than $15 million dollars in aid over the past 20 years. This year alone, the Foundation will award approximately $1.8 million.

More information about the Broadcasters Foundation, including how to make a donation or apply for aid, is available at www.broadcastersfoundation.org, 212-373-8250, or info@thebfoa.org.

Today, Thursday, July 20, 2023 is Broadcasters Foundation of America Giving Day.

From the Foundation:

Broadcasters Found of America Giving day is a day for everyone in radio and television to come together as one community to support colleagues, across every position, in need of financial assistance due to critical illness, accident, or disaster. The campaign also strives to raise awareness of the Broadcasters Foundation to ensure that anyone in radio and television who might qualify for aid knows about its charitable mission and can apply.

“Giving Day is an opportunity for everyone in radio and television to help our colleagues,” said Tim McCarthy, president of the Broadcasters Foundation. As broadcasters, we are storytellers. Whether behind the scenes in marketing, sales, or administration, part of the production team, or on-air talent, everyone in the radio and television broadcasting profession has a common goal: to share vital stories with their communities.

But who is there to help these essential community members when a natural disaster strikes, or an illness disrupts a family’s financial security and safety? The Broadcasters Foundation of America’s unique mission is to support our professional community during these hard times, when our colleagues are unable to work and struggling to pay basic living expenses.”

To read what some of our recipients have said about the help they received – in their own words - please click here.

“Support for the Broadcasters Foundation of America comes directly from within our broadcasting community,” noted Scott Herman, chair of the Broadcasters Foundation. “Over the past 15 years, our grantmaking has increased dramatically, distributing $400,000 in 2007 to almost $2,000,000 in 2022. We currently help an average of 400 broadcasters each year through our two grant programs. Our monthly grants support broadcasters on a continual basis while they recover from an illness or accident. Our emergency grants provide one-time financial aid following a devastating natural disaster or home emergency.

“I ask every broadcaster to please make a donation, in any amount, to help those in our industry who need it most,” added McCarthy.

To make a donation to the Broadcasters Foundation click here. Sponsors of the event include Hearst, iHeart Radio, Katz Media and the New York State Broadcasters Association. The event is free, but space is limited.

“We’re very excited about this new initiative,” said foundation president Tim McCarthy. “It’s imperative that we reach the next generation of broadcast industry leaders with our message of help and hope, while giving them an opportunity to network with higher level professionals who they may not otherwise have an opportunity to meet.”

Registration is available online.

NEW YORK—The Broadcasters Foundation of America has announced the renaming of its annual Lifetime Achievement Award to the Edward F. McLaughlin Lifetime Achievement Award, in honor of the iconic broadcaster, who passed away in 2018.

The Edward F. McLaughlin Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual who has made invaluable contributions to the television and radio industries. As previously announced, this year’s award will be presented to Richard Wiley during the Golden Mike Award gala on Monday, March 6, at the Plaza Hotel in New York City.

McLaughlin is widely recognized for discovering Rush Limbaugh, which led to the creation of the News/Talk format and the revitalization of AM Radio. He was a longtime supporter of the Broadcasters Foundation and its mission to provide aid to people in radio and television who are in acute need. He served as the Foundation’s Chairman for many years and held the title of Chairman Emeritus when he passed away in 2018.

“Ed was known as a leader and innovator,” noted Scott Herman, chairman of the Broadcasters Foundation. “He recognized talent and daringly pushed forth new ideas that propelled network and AM radio forward. It’s fitting that the Lifetime Award be named in his honor.”

As president of the ABC Radio Networks, McLaughlin implemented the multi-network concept, obtained the first exclusive live network radio rights to the Olympic Games, and acquired programs such as American Top 40 with Casey Kasem and American Country Countdown with Bob Kingsley. He founded EFM Media Management in 1987 to syndicate The Dr. Dean Edell Show and shortly thereafter launched the national syndication of local Sacramento radio host Rush Limbaugh.

“Ed was a champion for the broadcast industry and the mission of the Broadcasters Foundation,” stated Tim McCarthy, president of the Broadcasters Foundation. “He was admired for his entrepreneurship and respected for his forward-looking vision. This is one way we honor his memory.”

Among his many accolades, McLaughlin received the Broadcasters Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award, posthumously in 2018. He was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1995 and received the National Association of Broadcasters’ National Radio Award in 1996. He was the first chairman of the Radio Network Association and a long-standing board member of the International Radio & Television Foundation. McLaughlin was also a trustee of The Paley Center for Media.

For more information or to reserve a seat or table at the Golden Mike Award gala and fundraiser, please contact the Broadcasters Foundation at 212-373-8250 or info@thebfoa.org.

NEW YORK—The Broadcasters Foundation of America has launched its annual year-end giving campaign, with an appeal for tax-deductible donations that will allow the Foundation to continue providing financial assistance to those in broadcasting who need it most.

This year’s plea for donations follows a year-and-a-half of several cancelled fundraising events due to the COVID 19 pandemic that has also forced more broadcasters than ever to reach out for monthly or emergency relief.

The Broadcasters Foundation will award more than $1.8 million in monthly and one-time emergency grants in 2021, the group said. Monthly grants have increased 75% and more than 500 emergency grants have been awarded since 2017. Over the past 20 years, the Broadcasters Foundation has distributed more than $15 million to broadcasters in need.

A 501(c)3 charity, the Broadcasters Foundation is the only organization dedicated exclusively to delivering financial aid to broadcasters and their families whose lives have been upended by tragic illness, accident, or catastrophe. Personal donations to the Guardian Fund and corporate contributions to the Angel Initiative can be made at www.broadcastersfoundation.org/donate.

“Our grant recipients are hard-working broadcasters from across the country and from all size markets, who have been hit by challenging, often life-altering circumstances,” stated Scott Herman, chairman of the Broadcasters Foundation of America. “With the support and generosity of the people in our industry, we can help your colleagues and their families get through their toughest times.”

“Requests for assistance have escalated at a significant rate over the past several years,” added Jim Thompson, co-president of the Broadcasters Foundation. “Combined with the cancellation of several fundraising events due to the pandemic, personal and corporate donations are vital to continuing our charitable mission of disbursing financial aid to those in your industry who need it most.”

Co-president of the Broadcasters Foundation, Tim McCarthy, said “As I become more involved with the day-to-day operations of the Broadcasters Foundation, I am in awe of the generosity of those in our business who give back by supporting our mission. I would ask everyone who has not contributed in the past to please join our cause and help your colleagues in need.”

Individual donations can be made to the Guardian Fund, corporate contributions are accepted through the Angel Initiative, and bequests can be arranged through the Legacy Society.
NEW YORK—The Broadcasters Foundation of America is seeking donations that will help offset what it says was a major loss of funds from 2020 fundraising events having to be cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

BFA is a charity organization that provides financial aid to broadcasters and their families in the event of debilitating illness, accident or catastrophe. Over the past 20 years, BFA has distributed more than $13 million to broadcasters in need.

In 2020, BFA saw its Celebrity Golf Tournament, the Golden Mike Award and the Philip J. Lombardo Charity Golf Tournament cancelled as a result of the pandemic.

“In its more than 70 years of existence, the Broadcasters Foundation has provided financial assistance to every broadcaster who qualified, and we want to continue that track record,” said Scott Herman, chairman of the BFA. “These men and women are our colleagues, and unthinkable tragedy has left them unable to work. We cannot turn our backs on them.”

To make personal or corporate donations, visit www.broadcastersfoundation.org/donate.

These contributions will provide aid to broadcasters and their families “whose lives have been upended by tragic illness, accident or catastrophe,” BFA says.

BFA expects to award more than $1.7 million in monthly and one-time emergency grants this year. Over the past 20 years, BFA has distributed more than $13 million to broadcasters in need.

“Our only goal at the Broadcasters Foundation is to provide aid to those in our industry who need it most,” stated Scott Herman, chairman of the BFA. “Our grant recipients are hard-working broadcasters from across the country, who have been hit by challenging, often life-altering circumstances. Together, we can help them get through the toughest times.”

For more information, or to make a donation, visit www.broadcastersfoundation.org/donate.

NEW YORK—The Broadcasters Foundation of America’s Celebrity Golf Tournament won’t be teeing it up this year because of the ongoing safety concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is the second golf tournament fundraiser that BFA has cancelled this year, following the Philip J. Lombardo Golf Tournament that traditionally takes place during the NAB Show in Las Vegas; the in-person NAB convention was cancelled in April because of the pandemic. The two annual fundraisers, along with smaller events, generate more than $450,000 a year, according to BFA.

In an effort to counter the losses of these events, BFA is launching a plea for donations.

“I ask everyone whose career is built on broadcasting to consider donating to help offset the losses of our cancelled fundraising events,” said Jim Thompson, president of the BFA.

“Our colleagues who find themselves in acute need due to a debilitating illness or accident need our help,” said Scott Herman, Broadcast Foundation chair. “This year, we are helping more broadcasters than ever before, and it’s imperative that we continue to do so. We cannot turn our backs on our colleagues.”

For more information, or to make a donation, visit www.broadcastersfoundation.org.
