TYNGSBORO, Mass.—Broadcast Pix has joined the SRT Alliance and is adding support for Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) streaming to its integrated production systems, the company said today.

Broadcast Pix network inputs now feature SRT support for the guaranteed performance of low-latency video transport. The addition expands the native streaming protocol support of most Broadcast Pix systems. Other supported protocols include NDI, HTTP, RTSP, RTMP, Castus Stream and GuestPix.

The SRT Alliance was founded by Haivision in April 2017. Alliance membership now tops 500 members. Its mission is to overcome the challenges of low-latency live streaming by supporting the collaborative development of the SRT protocol.

TYNGSBORO, Mass.—Broadcast Pix is now offering the Church Pix live production and streaming solution designed for the House of Worship market. Church Pix is a turnkey platform meant for ease of use by church production volunteers to stream worship services online.

The Church Pix platform comes with two RoboPix PTZ cameras with 20x optical zoom, integrated remote control and mounting brackets; PC hardware and IP switch; a royalty-free library of clips, stills and graphic templates; instant streaming and recording; audio inputs that support Windows Audio devices, including NDI, Dante and external USB convertors; and a software control interface that automates common production tasks.

The user interface features macro buttons for moving a camera or adding a graphic, as well as others actions. Uses can start creating productions using the default design and create customized buttons and macros as they become familiar with the system, including full control of the RoboPix cameras.

For installation, users can connect the included server to the switch and then to the cameras using a single Ethernet cable. The cameras and server support NDI, allowing for self discovery. The audio from the house PA is then brought in through either a Digital Network or through a USB interface. 

Church Pix systems can stream to up to five online destinations and record internally or on external USB simultaneously, and then archive the content in the cloud or on a website.

SAN FRANCISCO—Over the past 12 months, as the coronavirus pandemic fulminated around the world, production teams faced shuttered newsrooms, new safety protocols, news team layoffs and shelter-at-home orders.

Then, ironically, demand for content skyrocketed as people began to shelter at home. And it quickly became clear that the day-today business of content production had to be rethought. For many media companies, steps like editing, graphics and proxy storage needed to move from on-premise locations and be accessible remotely to myriad staffers in their own homes.

The pandemic forced the content creation industry to figure out how it could respond to that demand, immediately.

“The pandemic has transformed things a great deal,” said Damon Hawkins, product manager at Grass Valley. “Customers now want to do a lot more remote working,” he said, as the pandemic forced both technology companies and content creators to fast-track use of remote tools.

IMMEDIATE SOLUTIONS

It’s a trend that has long been on the horizon.

“The movement towards partial or complete remote production was well underway before the current global health crisis,” said Matt Allard, senior product marketing manager at Vizrt. “The impact of this emergency has been to significantly hasten the planning and implementation of some types of remote scenarios.” That includes organizations suddenly in lockdown that now needed an immediate solution as well as those that used the pause to rethink how they could deploy production resources.

A driving factor in any solution is that there must be an increased level of integrated functionality, according to Allard. “Integrated systems enable a single operator to perform a variety of tasks, or multiple contributors to collaborate across the network remotely.”

The upside of increased remote use of integrated systems means new opportunities for creativity and collaboration, without being limited to where staff and equipment resources are located. This has proven true for sports, broadcast news or houses of worship.

“Sporting events may not have fans in the stadiums, but production crews developed ways to remotely broadcast and stream out games,” Allard said. “Broadcasters found new ways to remotely present information with technologies such as virtual sets and augmented reality graphics. When people were not able to attend classes or religious services in person, educational and religious organizations brought in integrated production solutions to produce and send out content to homes.”

NETWORK DEMAND

Among all else, the year 2020 required the industry to think fast and adapt quickly.

“On one hand the pandemic clearly accelerated our users’ desire to move to remote productions, so we spent a lot of time supporting our existing users through the transition,” said Graham Sharp, CEO of Broadcast Pix in Boston. Disparate entities like Saint Luke’s Cathedral in Portland, Maine, livestreamed their worship services with Broadcast Pix equipment while educational broadcasters like GovTV in San Diego utilized the company’s integrated remote production control and streaming to produce coverage of live events remotely.

The Broadcast Pix product line features an abstracted architecture such that the control surface and the inputs can be remote from the processing engine and connected by the public internet, Sharp said.

“Most of the support we provided was not really on our product, but helping our users set up and connect their networks,” he said. “If there is one thing that this showed, it is that our industry has some work to do to become proficient in networks and network management.”

COMBINING LIVE AND AUTOMATION

Remote working has proven valuable to international outlets as well. The financial news channel ausbiz in Sydney, Australia, built an editorial news service where journalists could download and edit video content without needing a large, on-premise installation requiring expensive studio crews.

The goal for ausbiz was to build a channel that caters to super niche audiences through a software-driven solution. Those pieces included Vizrt’s Viz Verdi, part of an automated digital media production system that combines live switching with studio automation, as well as the Viz Pilot newsroom graphics system and Viz Engine compositing and graphics solution.

“Even during a lockdown, [the system was used to] combine live production with automation where a single journalist can produce an entire segment from start to finish,” Allard said.

Software running on common off-the-shelf computer hardware is continuing to upend legacy production systems running on dedicated hardware, said Allard, “that offers content production creators a more agile approach providing faster adoption of new capabilities and stands future-ready as requirements change.”

Just as most major business software solutions have become virtualized to run in cloud environments, production software is also trending in the same way. “Besides more flexible access, users benefit from SaaS plans by better matching their needs and implementing a solution for limited time periods, and getting started with low upfront costs,” he said.

This shift is indicative of where the industry is headed. Customers are looking for remote workflows, Hawkins said, and moving forward, he thinks more of them will be embracing the cloud. “Our actual working environment is being driven toward HTML 5 and web-based tool sets,” he said. “Even if workers are coming into the office, they want to work differently.”

The use of remote technologies has impacted more than just large media companies.

Rush Beesley, founder of RUSHWORKS in Dallas, said the company was quick to respond to the increased demand for its VDESK integrated production system from municipalities, houses of worship and entertainment production venues. The key, according to Beesley, has been a mix of robotic camera control coupled with remote production capability using the company’s LogMeIn remote access software, which enabled adaptation for different types of media.

The demand for one-touch-type of productions led the company to upgrade its VDESK software to “make it even more powerful through the implementation of one-touch motion presets that greatly enhance remote production value,” Beesley said.

As content creators continue to look for streamlined productions, media tech vendors expect to see demand for systems that allow productions to be manned by a skeleton crew if needed.

“We project ... an even broader expansion of remote control capabilities, tightly integrated into ‘hybrid’ production scenarios which feature a mix of on-site attendees and remote participants,” Beesley said. “It’s the natural evolution of technology for a global society coping with requirements to remain physically distanced while accomplishing day-to-day job requirements.”

MAKE IT SIMPLE

When the pandemic began in early 2020, companies took extraordinary steps to get customers up and running remotely. Grass Valley, for example, provided free trial licenses of Edius, its video editing software, in the early days of the pandemic. Others, like Broadcast Pix, rolled out dedicated streaming solutions like StreamingPix.

“My key takeaway from the year was that our focus on ease of use was correct, but we did not go far enough,” Sharp said. “With everyone working from home and the market for streaming and remote production exploding, I think it showed the industry how complex most solutions are to install and use.”

When developing StreamingPix, the company had ease-of-installation and ease-of-use in mind. “We packaged everything required in the box, including market-specific templates and even content to get our users up and running quickly,” Sharp added.

Yet even as many media companies embrace remote operations, there will be others who are not ready to jump into the cloud full-time.

“Not everyone wants to use the cloud and not everyone has the pockets deep enough for a mega infrastructure [shift],” Hawkins said. The future will undoubtedly be a mixture of both, he said. “The drive is toward the cloud but there is always the need for on-premise hardware.”

What we can all agree upon is that a shift is certainly afoot.

“We know that the audience has moved from traditional media to now include the internet and other forms of digital distribution,” said Dr. Andrew Cross, president of R&D for the Vizrt Group when he announced the introduction of the company’s new Flexible Access technology philosophy.

“This [shift] represents the single greatest challenge that broadcast TV has ever faced in the last 50 years,” he said. “Business models have changed. People are viewing TV that is now being distributed on social media channels and online content portals, and this is a trend that will increasingly grow.

“The world of broadcasting has changed so we can’t sit here and assume things are working the same way.”

CHELMSFORD, Mass.—Graham Sharp has been elected to the Broadcast Pix Board of Directors, following his engagement with the company in August 2019 as CEO.

Sharp has more than 30 years of executive management experience in the media technology and business development industries, the company said.

CHELMSFORD, MA.—Students attending Boston-area Emerson College are using a recently installed Broadcast Pix BPswitch GX integrated production switcher for live team sports coverage on campus, the company announced this week.

The BPswitch, installed during the 2018 winter break, was used to produce men’s basketball last season when the college team clinched its first NEWMAC championship title.

The BPswitch is the centerpiece of the control room in the Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker Gym where all men’s and women’s home basketball and volleyball games are played. Located one floor above the basketball court, the control room is designed with a traditional three-row setup.

Currently the college is considering using the BPswitch-based room as the production center for other campus sports, said Tim MacArthur, associate director for media technologies and production.

“The big draw for us was getting into BPfusion graphics [a software option for BPswitch] and the integration with the Daktronics scoreboard,” said MacArthur. “The all-in-one device was also very appealing to us. There is a real ease of workflow with Broadcast Pix.”

The BPfusion software option work’s with BPswitch’s integrated NewBlueNTX multi-layered 3D motion graphics CG. It helps to streamline production of graphics for sports, elections and other data-intensive applications.

The software enables users to create template-based custom graphics that can be updated automatically with data from IP sources, such as scoreboards and RSS feeds, without re-keying data.

“The graphics are a step up from what we’ve done in the past, with easily modified templates that look great,” said MacArthur, adding that the ease of using NewBlueNTX was a big draw for the college.

The switcher’s four outputs feed control room monitors, including two large panels in the front of the room and individual monitors for the technical director and audio station. The BPview multi-view is customized for sports production; however, there is a separate layout for an annual awards gala put on in the gym.

Setting up the switcher for a production is done via a macro that ensures a consistent look, said MacArthur.

Fans of Emerson College sports can access 720p coverage of the college’s games on the school’s Emerson Lions YouTube Channel.

Typically, games are produced using a three-camera setup, but at times up to six have been used. A play-by-play announcer calls game action and color commentators provide perspective. Instant replay is also part of the production mix.

Even when a single camera production is called for, camera inputs are run through the BPswitch to access BPfusion graphics.

Student volunteers run the cameras and switch the games. The school provides no formal instruction on how to use any of the equipment, so students teach themselves and each other.

Chelmsford, Mass. – July 16, 2019 – Broadcast Pix™ today announced Emerson College, a private college in Boston devoted to communication and the arts, is using a new BPswitch™ GX integrated production switcher to produce live coverage of four team sports on campus. MacArthur said the BPview™ integrated multi-view was customized for sports production, but there is a separate layout for an awards gala that is hosted in the gym every April.

While the students do not use the BPswitch’s file-based macros during productions, MacArthur said there is one macro that preps the switcher for production, so there is a consistent look no matter which student is serving as technical director. Coverage is produced in 720p and streamed live to the Emerson Lions YouTube channel.

With very limited funding for the gym’s video production system, students rely on mostly hand-me-down equipment. The new BPswitch, for example, replaced an existing Broadcast Pix Granite™ system that had been donated to the school. MacArthur said it was a seamless upgrade, and the school was able to keep its existing Broadcast Pix control panel.

There are dozens of sports productions throughout the school year, all produced with volunteer student crews. There is also no formal instruction for the BPswitch (or any other video equipment) in the gym’s control room. Instead, student volunteers teach themselves and each other how to use the equipment.

According to MacArthur, typical games have a three-camera setup with play-by-play and color commentators along with instant replay. Some games have as many as six cameras as well as a sideline commentator, but even single camera productions are run through the BPswitch to take advantage of the BPfusion graphics.

CHELMSFORD, Mass.—While not officially elected, Broadcast Pix is heading to City Hall in Riverview, Mich., to serve the people. The company’s BPSwitch MX integrated production switcher has been installed in the Riverview City Hall’s control room to assist with coverage of two city council and one school board meeting each month.

A key part of the BPSwitch that made it the choice for the city was the Broadcast Pix Commander touchscreen control platform, according to Kim Harper, the IT manager for the city. Command features a user interface that simplify the controls for switching, PTZ camera control and the use of graphics, clips and effects.

For the meetings, the BPSwitch controls three cameras covering the dais, one for guest and visitor comments and a document camera, with the possibility of preset macros through the Commander interface. BPSwitch’s integrated NewBlueNTX multilayer 3D motion graphics CG can help produce graphics. There is also the BPView, which is the system’s customizable multiview that populates two screens in the control room.

Cross said the cameras can be positioned using a traditional control panel or with preset macros through the Commander interface that automatically focus on members of the council.

Riverview is Cross’ first job in professional video, and he said he was able to quickly learn the workflow for meeting coverage using BPswitch. “It works great,” he explained. “You can put a show together in 10 minutes. It’s really easy.”

A document camera, used in chambers to display supporting information during meetings, is also fed into the video switcher. Plus, meeting coverage includes limited graphics produced with BPswitch’s integrated NewBlueNTX multi-layer 3D motion graphics CG during productions. BPview™, the system’s customizable multi-view, populates two screens in the control room.

Meetings run live on local Comcast and WOW! cable channels, and are streamed live and available on-demand on the city's website. According to Adam Dunesberry, the operations manager for WCTV, the installation of the Broadcast Pix system resulted in a decluttering of extra gear in the control room, including playback decks and an external CG, as the BPSwitch console could handle graphics and video roll-ins itself.

All roll-ins and opens are stored in the BPSwitch using its Watch-Folders media management system. Producers are able to upload assets from an NLE using the integrated BPNet cloud-based video workflow service.

Meanwhile, the graphics are being produced with the built-in NewBlueNTX multi-layer 3D motion graphics CG. There is also the integrated BPview customizable multi-view that feeds four monitors in the control room.

The BPSwitch was added to the WCTV control room earlier in March.

Dusenberry said all shows have a dedicated folder; producers upload their assets from an NLE using the integrated BPNet™ cloud-based video workflow service. “The goal is to make it as easy and streamlined for our producers as possible,” he added.

Graphics are produced with the built-in NewBlueNTX multi-layer 3D motion graphics CG, which has improved the on-air look and saves at least one producer from adding specialized closing credits in post. WCTV also uses the integrated BPview™ customizable multi-view, which feeds four monitors in the control room, including two main monitors on the wall and two smaller monitors in the production console dedicated to graphics and the technical director.

The new BPswitch replaced a Blackmagic Design ATEM switcher. “We’d been pushing the envelope on production quality and outgrowing the capabilities of the ATEM,” Dusenberry explained. “We wanted to add more, but we also wanted it to be user friendly. The BPswitch fit what we were looking for – there’s an improvement both in usability and how our programs look to our viewers.”

WCTV offers hyperlocal coverage of events, government meetings, and education programs. The station operates three cable channels that are distributed through Comcast and Verizon, well as a website with live streaming and video-on-demand. WCTV maintains an active production schedule in its three-camera HD studio, with a handful of series as well instructional workshops for its active youth program, promotional videos for local organizations, and other shows.

“I will push a piece of gear to its limits,” Dusenberry said. “I always want to try and push for the production values that will make our programs look similar to the major networks. The BPswitch really makes that easy to do.”

CHELMSFORD, Mass.—Broadcast Pix is helping traverse distances with a new deployment of its BPswitch MX integrated production switcher for the San Diego-based GovTV. The TV station is using the BPswitch for an IP-based, live remote video production at official meetings of the city of Lancaster, Calif., roughly 170 miles away from the GovTV company offices.

GovTV developed a new workflow last year that was designed around the BPswitch, launching the new system for Lancaster at the end of December.

“Now we can instantly cut to the person speaking, so there’s no need to go to a wide shot when we’re following a conversation,” said Bob Anderson, president and CEO of GovTV.

The system’s master control is housed in San Diego. Operators use a traditional Broadcast Pix control surface to switch the live meetings, as well as control and monitor client productions through a Broadcast pix Commander browser-based user interface. A dedicated VPN connects GovTV to Lancaster for system and robotic camera control and insertion into live programming. BPNet, BPswitch’s integrated cloud-based video workflow service, provides a virtual backup to the VPN.

Lancaster operates its own PEG channel, LTV, on Spectrum Cable and AT&T, and is streamed by Granicus. GovTV is able to cut into LTV remotely through LTV’s Leighton Nexus. The BPswitch mainframe is located in Lancaster and has dedicated inputs for five cameras connected via SDI, plus an electronic voting system, scan converter to display PC-based PowerPoint presentations and a dedicated video calling system for Skype. The system operates in 1080i with SD downconversion for cable feeds.

In addition, the BPswitch’s integrated NewBlueNTX multi-layer 3D motion graphics and BPfusion software help display agenda items and lower-thirds.

OTTAWA—When the first NewTek TriCaster integrated video production system was introduced in 2005, its all-in-one functionality was limited to conventional SDI video signals, and whatever capability were “built into the box.”

In 2019, these walls have fallen down. Integrated production systems have embraced IP connectivity, and flexibility enhanced by network connections to exterior devices—whether physical or virtual. This can include remotely controlled PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras colocated with the integrated production switcher, or connected by IP anywhere in the world.

WHAT CUSTOMERS WANT

The vastly expanded capabilities of today’s integrated production systems are in sync with customer expectations, which have also grown exponentially since 2005. As a result, the “necessities” of current integrated production systems “include switching with a reasonable number of transition and effects options, clips and graphics search and playback, the ability to build playlists, record a primary mix along with multiple ISO input recording, Chroma-key support, lower thirds and logo keying, and streaming,” said Rush Beesley president of RUSHWORKS, a Dallas-based provider of live production gear.

At the same time, the expanding use of IP-delivered video by businesses, schools, churches, and other non-broadcast users means that “people coming to us these days are asking more about streaming than actual video production,” said Russell Whittaker, worldwide director of channel sales for Broadcast Pix in Boston. “That’s a bit of a seachange for us.”

Because these customers increasingly come from IT rather than TV backgrounds, they tend not to understand the benefit of SDI-based switching. “They live in a world of RJ-45 connectors,” said Whittaker. “For them, it must be good if it’s an IT technology.” This is why integrated production system manufacturers have moved so substantially to IP in their products, even though they retain SDI connections for broadcast users.

INDUSTRY TRENDS

The emphasis on IP connectivity, and the network-based possibilities it supports, is driving design in the development of integrated production systems.

“The biggest thing is flexibility,” said Will Waters, vice president of Customer Success for NewTek in Dallas. “You need to be able to have your production capability evolve in a way that is not locked into the original physical design of your switching equipment. Flexibility is the main thing we keep hearing about from customers.”

To support flexibility, Broadcast Pix, NewTek, and RUSHWORKS all support NewTek’s Network Device Interface (NDI) technology to allow their integrated systems to connect with NDI-enabled cameras, servers, and other video production equipment. By working in IP rather than baseband, “we’re moving forward into the world of virtualization, allowing us to access resources across the network through the integrated production system,” said Waters. “The limits are falling away.”

Beesley agrees. “I think the introduction of NDI has been very impactful, providing much more flexibility and freedom to introduce multiple sources with virtually no quality loss, and a significant reduction in expense and complexity,” he said. “NDI-capable cameras are certainly appropriate for integration into systems.”

The move into IP has also allowed integrated production systems to accept far more video sources than before; including those originating as data rather than signals. “The distinction between signals that had a BNC connection or a three-letter file extension is gone,” said Whittaker. “There is a lot more acceptance that a file is just as valid as a video signal.”

VENDOR ADVANCES

A number of new features have helped spur the market for integrated production systems in recent years.

For Broadcast Pix, the biggest development is data connectivity to the graphic creation systems within its BPSwitch line, according to Whittaker. “We’ve had that before, but we’ve extended the types of video signals,” he said. “Then there’s 3D motion graphics, which we launched in 2017 but started to deliver in force last year.” BPSwitch can now be run using a tablet or smartphone.

NewTek has developed a range of NDI-based tools for its TriCaster integrated production systems. They include NewTek Connect Pro (bridging conventional and IP-based workflows,), NewTek IsoCorder Pro (encoding video from up to 16 NDI sources in QuickTime format with 8-channel audio mixing), and NewTek Telestrator (adding live dynamic graphics to any NDI video source/still image).

Waters adds, “if you have a Windows PC and you can open up our application and connect to our integrated system, we can bring the user interface of our live production device anywhere that network can reach. Meanwhile, our NewTek Premium Access subscription service allows users to render real-time animation into live programming using Adobe After Effects and Photoshop— without using a conventional graphics pipeline.”

RUSHWORKS has added the ability to incorporate NDI and URL inputs and outputs into its products, and tweaked its PTZ cameras to provide a level of granularity and motion that removes the “robotic” look characteristic of the slow moves and zooms on most PTZ cameras, according to Beesley. RUSHWORKS’ VDESK integrated production system is the company’s flagship product in this area, with its portable version being branded as REMO.

COMING UP IN 2019

What can we expect from developers of integrated production system manufacturers in the year ahead?

At Broadcast Pix, “remote control is a big priority,” said Whittaker. “It appeals to people who have production facilities spread out between different locations. We also expect to increase the range of the number of IP inputs that our integrated systems can accept.”

Over at NewTek, “we’re heavily invested in the move to IT within our industry,” said Waters. “Without getting specific, we are looking to integrate into live production from control to advances in graphics and capturing live content for later re-use.”

Meanwhile, RUSHWORKS is completing a turnkey news production system designed to be operated by one person. “It’s an out-of-the-box solution that makes high-quality news production easily manageable and affordable for educational institutions, small TV stations, and the new world of internet TV Station entrepreneurs,” Beesley said.

Integrated production systems will push further into IP and enhanced flexibility in the years to come. In doing so, they will continue their march towards a level of sophistication and power that was once the sole preserve of traditional multiperson video production complexes.

Chelmsford, Mass. – Dec. 6, 2018 – Broadcast Pix today announced the School of Communication at Loyola University Chicago has upgraded its Convergence Studio with a new Broadcast Pix BPswitch MX integrated production switcher. Built in downtown Chicago in 2009, the facility houses television, radio, and graphics areas designed to provide students with access to the latest technologies and workflows used by communication professionals.

Jamason Chen, manager of technology, installed the new BPswitch in May, upgrading the technology from the previous Broadcast Pix Mica™ system. He was able to use the existing control panel and cabling, so it was a cost effective way to update the control room. “It was very convenient to upgrade rather than rebuild,” he said. “I love it, it’s technically very stable.”

Chen said the Broadcast Pix upgrade was part of the school’s commitment to keep pace with the ever-changing technology in the industry. He was particularly impressed with the NewBlueNTX multi-layer 3D motion graphics included with the BPswitch, because it provides more dynamic CG options. “It was a big jump in quality from features, function, design, quality, everything,” he said. “We love the multiple layer graphics control.”

The switcher upgrade also included BPfusion, which streamlines the creation of customized, data-intensive graphics. Designed for enhanced sports, election, and news coverage, BPfusion software seamlessly integrates with NewBlueNTX, automatically updating graphics with data from scoreboards, RSS feeds, and other IP sources without re-keying the data. “When you see current TV news, more and more information comes with the video,” Chen explained. “We can give more detailed information like a professional TV show.”

Programming is recorded to an external hard drive, but the BPswitch is used for local clip storage and playback.

Instead of a local cable channel, the School of Communication posts its programming to its YouTube channel. Loyola students produce a weekly sports show, as well as Rambler Round-Up, a one-minute daily news update that features extensive graphics. “A lot of people watch TV through the internet,” Chan explained. “This is a trend we need to move on. We want our students to experience cutting-edge technology.”

Like other accredited educational institutions, Loyola received BPfusion, the Broadcast Pix Commander touchscreen control interface, and a BPNet account for access to Broadcast Pix’s cloud-based video workflow and asset management service, as components of Broadcast Pix’s education incentives. Chen sees the potential for using BPNet to share content between campuses in the future. “The more important role is to show students what will be possible and inspire them to produce,” he added.

Mark Farrell, news director for KTEN Media, said the new BPswitch was part of an effort to ready the station for next month’s election coverage.

Owned by Lockwood Broadcast Group, KTEN’s studio is based in Denison, Texas, and produces more than seven hours of local news each weekday across its three channels. News broadcasts begin with morning news starting at 4:30 a.m. and conclude with a 10 p.m. newscast. The studio includes three robotic cameras and a stationary “grid cam,” which is used for bumps and other transitions.

WAYNE, N.J.—Department stores aren’t the only ones getting ready to offer some holiday deals, as JVC and Broadcast Pix have announced a partnership that will provide a reported $3,000 worth of savings for a multi-camera production system bundle.

As part of the deal, customers who purchase the Broadcast Pix Flint integrated production switcher and at least two JVC KY-PZ100 robotic PTZ video production cameras can receive JVC camera control software ($950 value) and a one-year extended warranty ($1,250 value) from Broadcast Pix. In addition, at the time of purchase dealers will provide an instate $450 rebate ($300 camera rebate plus $150 bundle rebate) for each JVC PTZ camera purchased.

CHELMSFORD, MASS.—Broadcast Pix’s robotic camera control in its integrated production switchers now work with JVC’s new KY-PZ100 PTZ network video production camera through serial and IP connections. The Broadcast Pix technology can control pan, tilt, zoom, focus, iris, gain and preset recall for up to 12 cameras.

Broadcast Pix users can now control JVC cameras with the joystick on any control panel. The PixButtons, control buttons with LED displays, provide access to up to 100 positions and can set the speed and range of PTZ camera movements. The JVC cameras can also be controlled via touchscreen using BPview and the Broadcast Pix Commander browser-based interface. A single cable powers the KY-PZ100 and delivers IP video and control to a Flint, Roadie or BPswitch system.

The JVC PTZ camera control will be available on all current Broadcast Pix models and the new BPswitch line of integrated production switchers as part of a new system software release in late 2017.

Broadcast Pix is expected to demonstrate the robotic camera controls during IBC 2017.

GREEN BAY, WIS.—At WGBA, the NBC affiliate in Green Bay, we used to rent a large production truck to produce nearly 100 events per year. However, it’s hard to make money on remote shoots when you spend so much renting a truck. Despite downsizing to a Broadcast Pix Granite 1000 integrated production switcher, our station continues to deliver solid local sports and event programming.

It’d be fair to say we are a Broadcast pix “power user;” we push just about every feature on the Granite pretty hard, and it’s worked very well. The Granite anchors our six year-old Mercedes Benz Sprinter 3500 remote production van.

BANG FOR THE BUCK
We chose the Granite mainly for the size—the interior of the Sprinter is pretty tight—but you also get a lot of bang for your buck with Broadcast Pix. We populate three monitors in the van with built-in multiview, including our main monitor for the director and audio operators, plus dedicated monitors for graphics and replay. We’ve also assigned five Panasonic HD cameras to the unit, each with 500 feet of cable, as well as a few POV analog cameras for specific shots. We also use all six keyers regularly and the clip and animation stores constantly.

The Granite switcher serves as the anchor for WGBA’s Mercedes Benz Sprinter 3500 remote production van.

The Granite production switcher also provides frame sync on all inputs—a huge time saver. For example, when we cover the Green Bay Gamblers, our local United States Hockey League team, we include footage from the in-house scoreboard production team. We receive their camera feeds via fiber, then convert them to HDSDI and switch them in our production.

COVERING ALL THE BASES
We use the Granite switcher for two of our most popular productions focusing on the Green Bay Packers. We produce “The Mike McCarthy Show,” a 30-minute weekly program every Tuesday during the NFL season featuring the team’s head coach, for WTMJ-TV, the NBC affiliate in Milwaukee; as well as “Packers Live,” which is shot live on Monday nights at Lambeau Field during the season.

Last summer, we produced live coverage of Brett Favre’s induction into the Packers Hall of Fame, which was carried by local stations and NFL Network. With so many outlets needing access, it was a very complicated production, so the Granite’s aux buses came in very handy. I could just provide separate feeds right off the switcher without the need for an additional outside switcher.

Starting in August we’ll begin weekly high school football, as well as high school basketball games. With Broadcast Pix’s Rapid CG software, we can interface directly with Daktronics scoreboards, so we get score and game clock data inserted automatically into our graphics without having to type in the information.

We expanded our production calendar last summer with coverage for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, a minor league team of the Milwaukee Brewers. We’re also using the truck more for news, including weather segments on location throughout the viewing area.

Whatever you give the Granite, it’ll handle it.

CHELMSFORD, MASS.—Broadcast Pix is going IP for the 2017 NAB Show, announcing that it will debut the new BPswitch family of integrated video production switchers, which feature control-over-IP from tablets, phones and panels. The new switcher offers enhanced BPNet, hybrid SDI and IP I/O, streaming, NewBlueNTX graphics, optional robotic camera control and are 4K upgradeable.

The BPswitch uses the Broadcast Pix Commander user interface for control through tablets, phones and laptops. The interface can control a local or remote BPswitch over IP using BPNet. Through the interface, users can perform switching, add titles, clips and effects, and control robotic cameras to execute live productions. Broadcast Pix is also making its BPview multi-view capable to be used in a browser, enabling control of either local or remote BPswitch systems over IP.

With the BPswitch, users can place the switcher with the cameras for remote control over IP using a standard internet connection. It also has the capability to control remote IP cameras like Sony and Panasonic robotic cameras.

An updated to the BPNet IP ecosystem provides the BPswitch with new control-over-IP capabilities with low control latency. BPNet security prevents unauthorized users from controlling a switcher with extended encryption and two factor authentication. It also provides ioGates cloud-based media management services, which allow for remote control of the switcher’s media, cloud storage, transcoding and delivery of content anywhere.

Broadcast Pix will have three new models of the BPswitch, the FX, MX and GX, all of which provide up to 22 SDI inputs and 12 outputs. All systems also provide IP inputs and streaming to Facebook Live and other CDNs, feature built-in NewBlueNTX for motion graphics CG, up to eight internal channels, upgradeable to 4K and optional control panels.

CHELMSFORD, MASS.—The City of Durham, N.C., is taking its city council meetings into the world of HD with the deployment of a Granite 1000 integrated production switcher from Broadcast Pix. The new switcher is used for coverage of bi-monthly city council and monthly planning commission meetings.

The Durham city council currently has five Panasonic SD cameras set up in the city council chamber, along with a document camera and PC input for sharing PowerPoint presentations. The plan is to update these cameras with HD models before the end of 2018 and control them through the Granite 1000.

The Granite system replaced a Broadcast Pix Slate system and is housed in a small control room in City Hall, along with cable headend equipment and a dedicated AC system. The city council was also able to export its graphics from the Slate system into the Granite.

The new Granite switcher was installed in late January.

CHELMSFORD, MASS.—Starting in the spring, Broadcast Pix’s integrated production switchers will offer native support for Facebook Live.

Flint, Granite, Mica and Roadie production switchers will now allow users to login directly to Facebook Live once and select a page for live streaming. Subsequent sessions can then be started with a touch of a button, according to Broadcast Pix. The Facebook Live support is now paired with the switchers’ previous support for all RTMP sites, as well as Ustream and Livestream.

All new switchers will carry the upgrade, while Broadcast Pix has announced that it will be available for free for switchers that are currently under warranty. System not under warranty can add the Facebook Live support and additional new functionalities by upgrading to version 6.0 software for $995.

CHELMSFORD, MASS.—Canadore College’s broadcasting and video production program is using Granite on the ice. That is, Broadcast Pix’s Granite 2000 production switcher. The BP system is one of the tools used during game coverage of the North Bay Battalion hockey team in North Bay, Ontario, by Canadore College students.

Installed as part of an arena renovation in 2015, the BP Granite 2000 unit is designed to handle scoreboard video coverage. The production switcher offers integrated multi-view that populates four different monitors in the HD control room, including preview/program monitors, and separate monitors for clips and graphics. BP’s Watch-Folders file management system is also used to import graphics and clips directly into the Granite.

Canadore students are responsible for running the scoreboard coverage of each North Bay game. The Granite handles footage from three cameras that provide game coverage and features a dedicated input to include replays from the broadcast feed.

CHELMSFORD, MASS.—Broadcast Pix is issuing a call to attention for its new series of live production systems, the Broadcast Pix Commander. Featuring a streamlined touchscreen interface, the new system simplifies switching, robotic camera control, and the inclusion of graphics, clips and effects.

The Commander systems are turnkey technologies that only require the cameras, audio and any size touchscreen monitor. All of the systems accept SDI, IP and HDMI inputs, and provide switching, robotic camera control, CG, clip player, recording, streaming, and BPNet cloud integration. Additional options are available via the BPCommand toolkit, which allows the customization of the Commander layout, and BPNet options for the creation of graphics from a remote office or via auto-entry from a database.

There is also the BPNet cloud portal system, which assists in posting finished productions to sites like YouTube. With BPNet, users can brand and organize the cloud portal, which can be open or restricted to viewers. BPNet also allows media to be added from mobile devices, streamlines multi-system operation, and can automatically upload productions through BPNet remote management.

The Commander series includes Commander 4, Commander 6 and Commander Portable, which will start at a retail price of $9,995. Broadcast Pix has also announced the Commander Interface Option, which allows for larger installations to utilize the Commander touchscreen interface.

All products will be available starting Dec. 14.

CHELMSFORD, MASS.—In an effort to boost its workflow and complete its HD transition, FayTV in Fayetteville, N.C., acquired two new production switchers from Broadcast Pix. The public, education, government (PEG) channel brought in the Mica 1000 and Roadie switchers, both featuring BPNet.

The Mica 1000 switcher is primarily used to produce government meetings from the PEG channel’s temporary facility near City Hall, according to Broadcast Pix’s press release. In addition, it helps provide closed captioning services.

The Roadie allows FayTV to switch a multi-camera shoot and add graphics during a production. FayTV has paired the switcher with a 21-inch monitor to display the preview/program and camera feeds, and uses the switcher’s touchscreen monitor to access clips and graphics through the PixPanel. Roadie’s built-in streaming has also improved the station’s live coverage on platforms live Facebook Live.

With both switchers integrated with the BPNet cloud-based video workflow service, FayTV is able to automatically transcode uploaded program files for playback through a Tightrope system.

FayTV acquired the Mica 1000 and Roadie switchers last summer.

CHELMSFORD, MASS.—Broadcast Pix is offering a new way for sharing photo and video content, announcing the release of its BPNet Upload App. The free app is designed for both iOS and Android mobile devices and works in conjunction with the BPNet cloud-based video workflow service.

BPNet Upload allows users to transfer content to any preselected production switcher, or one file can be transferred to multiple destinations. With the app, users can upload content in the background using the UDP protocol, which accelerates uploads and provides a secure transfer. The app also supports video playback and allows metadata and an uploaded file history to be viewed in the mobile device.

Files can be renamed in the app and are transcoded automatically before being transferred. Users’ names are also displayed in the BPNet account to track incoming files and progress status. BPNet Upload also has the ability to support multiple accounts and can brand content with an account’s specific logo.

BPNet Upload is available on both iTunes and Google Play.

CHELMSFORD, MASS.—Since it began broadcasting in 2008, Marshfield Community Television has expanded its operations and upgraded to HD production. A factor in those developments was the use of Broadcast Pix equipment, including Granite integrated production switchers.

The public, educational and government broadcaster supports three local channels using two studios. Studio A houses a Granite X switcher in its control room, as well as three JVC ProHD cameras, and is used by both Marshfield High School students and volunteers. Studio B is used primarily by volunteers and features a Granite 2000 switcher. Broadcast Pix’s Mica 1000 integrate switcher is also used for coverage of Board of Selectmen meetings.

MCTV directors say that operators are able to drag-and-drop clips, effects and graphics from the facility’s EditShare asset management system directly into the Broadcast Pix switchers. Rapid CG, an optional software from Broadcast Pix, is also used to streamline scoreboard graphics and incorporate social media content into programming. The BPView integrated multi-view system also makes up part of MCTV’s equipment.

According to Broadcast Pix’s press release, MCTV is considering adding a fourth Broadcast Pix switcher for an upcoming government facility.

AMSTERDAM–Broadcast Pix has acquired the web-based video management tool maker, ioGates. Prior to the announcement–made at IBC 2016 in Amsterdam–the pair announced the availability of a new media workflow and storage system, the BPNet.

“IP has been a part of the Broadcast Pix strategy for almost a decade, and our acquisition of ioGates underscores our commitment to cloud-based video production workflows over IP networks,” said Kevin Prince, Broadcast Pix CEO. “With the architects of BPNet now part of the Broadcast Pix team, we will continue to provide cloud-based solutions for our customers and lead the innovation in this emerging market.”

BPNet is accessed through a web-browser, giving users the ability to share from anywhere over a system that gives senders the ability to choose what the recipients can see. Files can be shared to social media and broadcast platforms, video can be converted to any format and content can be directed to any production switcher within the workflow. Broadcast Pix production switchers with the new V.6 software have BPNet integrated into it. A free service of BPNet includes 25 GBs of cloud storage, transcoding to BP format and automated show backup.

ioGates’ suite of web-based video management tools has attracted customers from the education, military, sports, film and television markets. ioGates will continue to sell and support its services as part of Broadcast Pix.

CHELMSFORD, MASS.—Broadcast Pix is hitting the ice with the Kalamazoo Wings professional ice hockey team, as the company announced that it contributed a Granite 1000 integrated production switcher to The Arena at Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo, Mich. The installation came as a result of a league mandate that teams provide online audiences with HD coverage of games that includes the game clock superimposed on the video.

The Granite 1000 system at the Wings Event Center comes equipped with Rapid CG, Broadcast Pix’s optional software that works with the switcher’s integrated CG to streamline graphics by integrating clock, score and other information from the arena’s OES scoreboard. The switcher’s BPView multi-view takes up two 42-inch screens in the control room and features a built-in clip store.

The Granite system provides a live stream, coaches live game tagging system, and monitors throughout the concourse. The Wings Events Center is also using the switcher for HD production of concerts and other events.

CHELMSFORD, MASS.—With a small production team made up of mostly students, Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich., relies on Broadcast Pix switchers to help cover student athletics, seminars and other events. On campus, the school utilizes a Broadcast Pix Granite 5000 integrated production switcher, while a Granite 1000 is used on the road.

Ted Matko, director of technical media, TV and Audio Studios for Hillsdale College, switched to Broadcast Pix when the school made the transition from analog to digital. For events that take place off-campus, an integrated production switcher was important for the school’s HD flypack. The Granite 1000 anchors the school’s set-up and its Power Aux output feeds live image magnification at venues. The switcher also features a built-in still store to save images during a production.

 The Granite 5000 helps the college’s production team cover the Center for Constructive Alternatives conference series four times a year, for producing online courses, and school athletics, including football, volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball. Multi-camera productions across campus can be switched through the Granite 5000. A dedicated output to major news agencies through the Granite switcher also allows for the college to participate in live video interviews.

The school also has Broadcast Pix’s Rapid CG software that allows the Granite switchers to integrate with the scoreboard to handle scores, the clock and other game data. The BPView multi-view system is also available to populate four screens for graphics and audio.

Hillsdale College installed the Granite integrated switchers in 2013.

OLYMPIA, WASH.—TVW, the Washington Public Affairs Network, covers the Washington State legislature from its Captiol Campus, as well as commission and agency meetings, public policy events, and more. Fifteen rooms in the Capitol Campus have at least three cameras, including the House and Senate floors, and we can provide simultaneous live coverage of them all on the web.

OUT WITH THE OLD
Last fall, we converted our facility to HDSDI. Though we previously upgraded to SDI, we were still using much of the equipment from our launch in 1995. Everything we owned had become obsolete. While no cable system in the state provided TVW with an HD channel (footage is letterboxed), we offer HD footage is online and through three feeds TVW delivers to the Capitol Campus.

We overhauled our three existing control rooms and master control, added a fourth control room and replaced two mobile production units.

Gerchak uses one of the six Broadcast Pix switchers installed during TVW’s recent rebuild. We chose the Broadcast Pix Mica 1000 integrated production switcher for our three existing control rooms. These rooms have the same, effective control scheme. We utilize two-man crews operating identical equipment in each room built around the Mica switcher. The Micas were a great value because they control external devices and have a number of built-in tools, including CG, clip stores, and a multiview. That saved us from having to source, purchase, and integrate additional equipment.

We installed a Broadcast Pix Granite in our new control room, which is dedicated to programs we produce in our own studio, but can be used for legislative coverage if needed. The new Granite will be a key part of our upcoming election coverage.

IN ACTION
We also produce original programming, including a daily “Legislative Review” program, “Capitol Headlines” news briefs, and weekly series “Inside Olympia” and “The Impact.” Broadcast Pix’s ClearKey advanced chromakey technology for virtual sets greatly enhances some of these productions.

For meeting coverage, video from all 49 cameras on location is transmitted via fiber to TVW’s central equipment room, then “salvo”-routed to one of four control rooms (the routing system is controlled by Telemetrics software). When a chamber is recalled, all resources associated with that chamber—including video, audio, graphics, control, and metadata—are routed to the Broadcast Pix switcher in a specific control room.

Our mobile units cover meetings and events away from the Capitol Campus. Manned by two-person crews, each is anchored by a Mica 500, which controls the unit’s Panasonic AW-HE130 PTZ cameras. The Mica’s integrated CG has helped streamline our field productions. Graphics are now inserted live during production. That alone saves a lot of man hours.

BILLERICA, MASS—Broadcast Pix and ioGates began working on a new solution for IP video back at the 2015 IBC Show. The result from the two companies—which recently announced a letter of intent for Broadcast Pix to acquire ioGates—is BPNet, what Tony Mastantuono, Broadcast Pix’s product manager, calls “the marriage of video, control and data.”

Mastantuono says BPNet is primarily a cloud-based service that enables online and offline storage and archival services for content and distribution. “It really becomes an ecosystem for your production and all your production elements,” he explained.

With BPNet, users can upload any content from any device to the cloud. Broadcast Pix switchers have direct access to the BPNet cloud, creating a bidirectional application for uploading content, and grab and push it to Broadcast Pix switchers. Metadata can be entered, customized and viewed from the cloud, which creates the opportunity for collaboration workflows. A playback feature part of the cloud offers frame by frame searching. In addition, conversion and transcoding is built into the cloud, enabling content to be converted to any type of playout or format. “In a nutshell, it allows us to upload, store, convert, transcode and distribute production elements,” said Mastantuono.

BPNet is a subscription service, but doesn’t require an account to be accessed. Twenty-five Gigabits are included with the subscription for Broadcast Pix customers under warranty with options to add additional storage, conversion, transcoding and distribution options.

Mastantuono says BPNet will become “the foundation of Broadcast Pix.”
