LOS ANGELES and WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Feb. 21, 2018 — SMPTE®, the organization whose standards work has supported a century of advances in entertainment technology and whose membership spans the globe, has issued a call for technical manuscript proposals for the SMPTE 2018 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition (SMPTE 2018), which will be held Oct. 23-25 at a new venue, the Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites in downtown Los Angeles. Authors must submit their proposals by May 28.

Held annually by SMPTE, the technical conference is the world's premier forum for the exploration of media and entertainment technology. This year's program committee is co-chaired by two SMPTE Fellows: Thomas Edwards, vice president engineering and development at Fox, and SMPTE Education Director Sara J. Kudrle, product marketing manager for playout at Imagine Communications. The committee is being overseen by SMPTE Education Director for Conference Programs Yvonne Thomas, product manager at Arvato Systems, and by SMPTE Education Vice President Richard Welsh, co-founder and CEO of Sundog Media Toolkit.

"The program committee intends to build a technical program that will reflect the innovative spirit, dynamic nature, and growing inclusion that characterize today's media and entertainment industry," said Welsh. "Presenting a paper at SMPTE 2018 offers researchers, engineers, educators, executives, creatives, and students with a unique opportunity to share their expertise, and we welcome proposals from all variety of professionals working in our field."

Authors of manuscript proposals selected by the 2018 program committee will have the opportunity to present at the event and network with the industry's most esteemed technology thought leaders and engineering executives. Program sessions address advancements in current technology, plus future-looking developments in media technology, content creation, image and sound, and the allied arts and sciences. 

Proposed papers must be informational and must address technical theory, research, innovation, application, or practice specific to any of the evolving technologies associated with the media and entertainment industry. Papers that are commercial or promotional will not be considered, nor will those that have already been published. Student papers are strongly encouraged.

Possible paper topics include subjects such as ultra high definition (UHD); wide color gamut (WCG) and high dynamic range (HDR) management; the future of media distribution (OTT, ATSC 3.0, mobile, etc.); media infrastructure (SDI, ST 2110); workflow management (file-based, automation); cloud and virtualized media processing; image acquisition and processing; content management and storage, restoration, and preservation; cinema processing and projection technology; human perception of images and sound; quality and monitoring of images or sound; new compression techniques and implementations; content and network security; new audio techniques or technologies; advances in display technologies; future media technology (virtual reality, augmented reality, 360 video); machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) technology for professional content creation; and inclusion in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

Instructions on submitting an abstract, along with a comprehensive listing of potential topics, are available at smpte2018.org. Early submission of paper proposals will ensure consideration by the SMPTE 2018 program committee. May 28 is the firm deadline for abstract submissions.

Final proposal selection and notification to authors will occur no later than July 20. To ensure SMPTE has time to process papers for the conference, selected presenters must provide an electronic version of the final technical manuscript to the Society no later than Sept. 28.

Following SMPTE 2018, SMPTE will publish accepted manuscripts to the SMPTE Digital Library hosted on the IEEE Xplore platform, and video of each paper presentation will be posted to the Society's YouTube channel. Submitted manuscripts will also go through peer review for possible publication in the award-winning SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal.

This year the SMPTE conference will boast a larger high-tech exhibit hall and more seating for its three days of technical sessions. The event also will feature special events including two cocktail receptions, the Annual Awards Gala, and a preconference Symposium, all of which bring attendees unparalleled opportunities for professional development, relationship building, and "mind sharing." Recent content produced includes Snapchat’s original show, “Second Chance,” about couples hashing out their relationship issues, which was produced by 45th & Dean and premiered on February 14.

Six URSA Mini 4.6Ks and two Micro Studio Camera 4Ks capture content more efficiently and with a superior look both in the studio and out in the field. The URSA Mini 4.6K’s Super 35mm sensor and 15 stops of dynamic range provide a quality and cinematic look to content. In addition, the URSA Mini 4.6K and Micro Studio Camera 4K have both proven significantly convenient when shooting outdoor interviews because of their compact and lightweight designs.

Four URSA Studio Viewfinders are paired with the URSA Mini 4.6Ks and allow for the easy use of the cameras in a professional live production environment by providing a bright 7-inch screen with viewable tally light, control knobs, large grab handles and more. Two URSA Viewfinders are also on deck for outdoor and handheld shooting.

Building the 45th & Dean production facility was a group effort, and the team was looking for a combination of scalability and compatibility with what they already had at A+E Networks. Looking at how easily the URSA Mini 4.6K and Micro Studio Camera 4K integrated with their existing products and workflows was a huge factor when deciding to bring Blackmagic Design on board. The team found the ability to change the lens on the URSA Mini 4.6K particularly convenient as they wanted the shots to match what they’re using in studio or achieve a specific look for a show or scene.

In addition to the cameras, there are four Video Assists and four Video Assist 4Ks to assist in monitoring, focusing and framing shots, and recording. The production facility does not have a control room and instead relies on the Video Assists and Video Assist 4Ks for transferring data post‑production.

To facilitate multi-camera studio shoots, an ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K was installed, which allows the team to switch between cameras, resolutions, and deliver interactive content. An ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Panel is coupled with the ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, giving full access to controls and the ability to handle multi-layer live productions.

Incorporating Blackmagic Design into their workflow was a seamless process. With minimal training, the crew was able to hit the ground running and deliver content that is incredibly appealing. Presentation: "A Study of Protocols for Low-Latency Video Transport Over the Internet" 

April 12, 9:20 a.m. 

As part of the Broadcast Engineering and Information Technology Conference, Cobalt Digital Director of Technology Ciro Noronha will present a paper titled "A Study of Protocols for Low-Latency Video Transport Over the Internet." The session will be most useful for broadcasters that are considering the internet as a low-cost contribution link but are concerned with latency and reliability. The paper investigates Selective Retransmission (also known as ARQ) and SMPTE-2022 FEC, two common protocols for dealing with the issue of packet loss and the tradeoff between latency and reliability. Using an encoder/decoder pair, Noronha will present results of lab tests using a network simulator specifically designed to analyze the two protocols, as well as results from an internet link between locations in California and Illinois. Noronha will also offer guidelines for implementation. The 20-minute presentation will take place in North Hall Meeting Room N256.

Fremont, CA - February 20, 2018 - Blackmagic Design has today announced that Derby County Football Club (DCFC) has invested in a multi camera live production workflow featuring the Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K, Micro Studio Camera 4K and URSA Mini 4.6K.

Led by head of broadcast, Matt Reeder, and Chief Technology Officer, Stuart Fisher, DCFC has taken the unprecedented decision and become one of the first Championship clubs to broadcast its own extensive coverage of its English Football League (EFL) fixtures as well as a wide range of pre and post match content via the club’s streaming platform, RamsTV.

The innovative solution has been developed with Blackmagic Design infrastructure products at its core by broadcast consultant, Stvdio Expert’s Peter Knowles. “Derby County has a unique vision of where the club wants to be in terms of delivering high quality content to its 300,000 fans across the globe,” he begins. “The wider brief set by Matt and Stuart was incredibly ambitious - to put in place the facilities required to produce content that would rival that of the major broadcasters.”

In covering home matches, DCFC currently relies on eleven camera channels, and according to Knowles this continues to grow and evolve. “Derby now has a dedicated studio setup where it can pre-record presenter links using three 4K studio cameras from Blackmagic Design. We then have a further two cameras on the main gantry at the halfway point and an URSA Mini 4.6K as a remote touchline unit, which is also used to for pre and post match interviews.

“We have radio receivers on the touchline and at the stadium entrance for the teams’ arrival, giving us greater flexibility as to what we can film and where. That is complemented by a Micro Studio Camera 4K as a locked off, wide angle tunnel camera, which captures the pre-match line up and preparations,” says Knowles.

The entire install relies on a single mode 24 core optical fiber network, with a Smart Videohub 40x40 for signal management throughout Pride Park Stadium.

“Our video matrix forms a very flexible foundation for the club’s production needs, particularly in these first few months as we bed in the new systems,” he continues. “It will be used extensively by the creative team to bring in new inputs and sources and affords Derby enough flexibility to continue experimenting with the scale and variety. As well as the eleven camera channels, we also have extensive slow motion and replay facilities, together with purpose built graphics for match analysis.”

RAYMOND, Maine – February 20, 2018—At the 2018 NAB Show, Dielectric—the leading manufacturer of purpose-engineered antennas and RF systems for TV and radio broadcasters—will present a broad array of spectrum repack antennas engineered to deliver the enhanced performance required bythe next-generation broadcast standard, ATSC 3.0.Dielectric will exhibit at Booth C2613 (April 9-12, Las Vegas Convention Center.)

With theFCC’s approval of ATSC 3.0 in November 2017 and the official approval of the full suite of ATSC 3.0 standards at the 2018 CES Show, the broadcast industry is poised to start the transition from its broadcast-specific transport backbone to an IP-based transmission stream that can carry multiple 4K video programs, mobile and interactiveservices. At NAB, Dielectric will highlight the many features designed into their ATSC 3.0compatible UHF/VHF repack antennas and components, including safety margins that withstand the higher peak to average power ratios (PAPR)of the new standard. 

“Since ATSC 3.0 uses OFDM modulationrather than ATSC 1.0’s 8-VSB, the PAPRis 2-to-3db higher. Not only do our ATSC 3.0-compatiblerepack antennas and filters meet these higherpeak power demands, but our band-tunable filters are being tuned to ATSC 3.0 before they ship from our facility," said Jay Martin, vice president of sales, Dielectric. "In this way, the installed equipment won't need to be re-tuned later should the customer decide to switch to ATSC 3.0."

Dielectric is also preparing broadcasters for ATSC 3.0 with its FutureFill feature, which is included as standard in every center-fed, high-power repack antenna it manufacturers—at no extra chanrge. FutureFill increases power density by 7-to-9dB close to the tower, and reduces the main lobe gain by 1.2-to-1.4dB. The broadcaster can, if additional transmitter power is available, increase the TPO to overcome the main lobe gain reduction, or use Single Frequency Network (SFN) technology to enhance reception at the periphery of the service area.

“FutureFill allowsan existing ATSC 1.0 antenna to be adjusted so that its performance is boosted for ATSC 3.0,without having to be taken down from the tower or replaced,” said Martin.“With the transition from ATSC 1.0 to ATSC 3.0, we’re going to see greater focus on power density, higher vertical polarization ratios and polarization diversity,as well asthe use of single frequency networks (SFNs), all of which boost reception across the coverage area.”

“We’ve taken time on the front-end to design for ATSC 3.0 requirements, such as safety margins to withstand higher PAPR. For the antenna system, we actually test the antennas for the post ATSC 3.0 performance,implementing the FutureFill feature during the testing process,” continued Martin. “While this takes extra time, in the long-run stations will be better prepared knowing that they have this option available as they plan their ATSC 3.0 transition. Many of our broadcast customers have given us repeat business over the past 20 to 30 years because they know that, with our antenna designs, we’relooking to the future and watching out for their interests.”

LAKE FOREST, Calif. — Feb. 20, 2018 — VidOvation today announced an agreement with wireless video link provider ABonAir to take part in ABonAir's expansion in the United States. ABonAir is known for providing extremely low latency in a long-range, high-performance, broadcast-grade wireless system. ABonAir's one-of-a-kind solution will benefit VidOvation's customers in the sports, live events, and newsgathering spaces, where the lowest possible delay is mandatory while preserving high video quality.

"ABonAir has achieved the holy grail of 7-millisecond latency — something no other vendor has been able to achieve while maintaining broadcast quality and high reliability using industry-standard H.264 encoding," said Jim Jachetta, executive vice president and chief technology officer at VidOvation. "VidOvation clients have been asking for a very low-latency, broadcast-quality, long-range wireless camera-back system for quite some time, and now we'll be able to give it to them. We can offer clients a complete range of wireless video-transmission solutions that address the needs of the marketplace while helping them overcome the frustration of high latency."

VidOvation will resell ABonAir's complete product line, including two versions of its flagship wireless video link — AB512™ and AB507™. Built on a bidirectional radio channel between transmitter and receiver, ABonAir's wireless video links acknowledge the correct acceptance of each group of pixels, thus providing exceptionally robust and reliable transmission.

Most notably, both the AB512 and the AB507 systems reduce latency to only a 7-millisecond delay (also known as subframe delay) for live event coverage, multicamera productions, and any other application in which latency of two to six frames or 30 to 90 milliseconds is unacceptable. This low delay enables crews to produce multicamera and live shows without worrying about lip sync problems caused by the lag or delays from the simultaneous operation of multiple cameras.

The system features an RF spectrum analyzer that automatically selects and hops to the best RF channel without dropping a single bit, while modulation and bit rate adapt themselves based on RF link conditions. The manual channel selection option is ideal for frequency coordination at large events.

ABonAir's AB512 is a camera-mounted, wireless video, bidirectional intercom, and camera control system that enables camera teams to transmit video directly from cameras to media centers or OB trucks wirelessly. The AB512 supports ABonAir's Fiber Coverage Extension units (FCEs), which makes it possible to connect a single receiver to multiple FCEs in various locations throughout a venue or even to separate sites, all via fiber cables with unlimited range. AB512 also provides highly desirable features such as intercom, IFB, camera control, and paint.

Another alternative is the AB507 camera-mounted wireless video link, a fully portable transmitter/receiver that makes it possible to transmit video up to 1,000 meters (3,000 feet). The system uses full MIMO radio, employing two antennas at both the transmitter and receiver to enhance performance and ensure coverage, even in extreme radio-signal environments.

The ABonAir products are the perfect complement to VidOvation's AVIWEST bonded-cellular solutions. For example, VidOvation clients can use ABonAir's AB512 system to transmit video wirelessly from the field to the newsgathering van or sports production truck. From there, they can use AVIWEST bonded-cellular units for a live backhaul link to master control or for live streaming to the web or social media outlets such as Facebook Live, YouTube Live, and more.

The cutting edge innovation of new clips for DPA’s popular d:screet™ 4060 Omnidirectional Miniature Microphones has delivered such a significant improvement in usability and sound quality that broadcast sound supervisor Pat Nunn is among a growing group who use them as first choice for shows they work on.

Pat, who spent 25 years at the BBC before leaving to start Bambamsound in 2010, is renowned for his expertise as both a sound supervisor and location sound recordist. During his career he has been responsible for sound in all show genres including game shows such as Pointless and Tipping Point; soap operas such as Eastenders; sports programmes covering the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games and the Wimbledon Tennis Championships; magazine programmes such as BBC1’s The One Show and ITV’s The Nightly Show, and entertainment shows such as Davina McCall’s This Time Next Year.

“Since being introduced to the new clips by DPA’s UK Sales Office Sound Network, I have used them in conjunction with a d:screet 4060 Omnidirectional Miniature Microphone to mic presenters, talents, guests and contestants on five shows – What Would Your Kid Do?, This Time Next Year, House of Games, Pointless and Pointless Celebrities,” Pat explains. “The new clips are a game-changer because they hold the microphone away from the body and this significantly improves the sound quality. Previously, the clips were flat, and the mics would often get caught on clothing, especially loose folds, to create unwanted maddening friction and rubbing noises. That resulted in delays and, in some cases, distress, especially if I was miking guests who were being interviewed about a difficult subject.

“The new clips also give me four different ways of attaching them, so whether I am using them side on (for a shirt or tie) or straight down (for a t-shirt, high collar or dress) I can use the same clip. What’s more, they don’t tend to fall forward, which is another big advantage – and having some air around the whole mic makes for a better sound, too.”

The versatility and clarity of DPA’s d:screet 4060 Omnidirectional Miniature Microphone is also praised by Pat Nunn, who says he is impressed by its ‘very clean, clear sound’ and ‘very low distortion’.

“I started using d:screet 4060s nine months ago when I found the new clips,” he explains. “Over that time, the microphones and cables have been very robust and resilient. I have used them on adults and children, and on audience members with very close PA and the odd spot mic. I have had no mic or cable breakages, which is remarkable when you consider that Pointless, for example, is four shows a day with 10 adults on each show. That’s 10 changes per show, four times a day!”

Pat adds that he often only has a few seconds per person to equalise each channel, so he appreciates the fact that d:screet 4060 mics need a lot less equalisation than the mics he previously used.

DPA revised the d:screet™ 4060 range of mics in 2014, adding a thin layer of reinforcement where the cable meets the capsule. This added even more durability to the mics, making them more resilient than ever to any strains or rigorous handling they might receive in professional sound environments.

“For Davina McCall’s show This Time Next Year we were miking up people, including young children, who had distressful tales to tell. In those situations, you can’t stop recording for any reason, so we needed robustness and clean sound at all times,” he explains. “The improvements DPA has made to its d:screet 4060 microphones, cables and clips are significant because they are now highly reliable. I’ve been constantly miking and de-miking shows over the last nine months without any problems, and this proves that whatever issues these microphones had in the past have been well and truly fixed. I’m now very happy with them and use them on all my shows where a personal mic is required.”

Fremont, CA - February 15, 2018 - Blackmagic Design today announced that Director of Photography David Ortkiese used Micro Cinema Cameras and Video Assist 4K monitor/recorders to capture and monitor in-vehicle and exterior camera shots for season two of NBC's hit series “Better Late Than Never.”

The show follows five globe-trotting stars - Henry Winkler, William Shatner, George Foreman, Terry Bradshaw and comedian Jeff Dye - as they set off on a wildly entertaining journey to Munich, Berlin, Lithuania, Sweden, Barcelona, Madrid and Morocco. Due to the show’s focus on travel, Ortkiese and his team required small form factor cameras that were easy to transport and mount, but that delivered a cinematic look.

“There were several factors that went into using the Micro Cinema Cameras,” noted Ortkiese. “Along with in-vehicle coverage, we wanted something that could dynamically capture car chases at 130 mph. We also wanted a camera that would match cinematically, and the Micro Cinema Camera does just that with its ability to shoot in 12-bit RAW cinema DNG and its 13 stops of dynamic range. Lastly, having an interchangeable lens mount gave us the creative flexibility to use the lenses we wanted, allowing us to get the coverage we wanted without sacrificing quality or image continuity.”

The Micro Cinema Cameras’ 12-bit RAW and dynamic range were also beneficial for the variety of shoot locations. “We would start out driving in a field and end up in a forest, or drive through a tunnel or under a bridge, so we needed that dynamic range and RAW control to help match the look,” said Ortkiese. “The show itself has a color arc as it travels from mid to southern Europe and into North Africa. The terrains all have different visual color palettes, and we needed that integrated into each location and episode. Shooting in RAW helped capture and enhance all that.”

In a similar vein, as the locations changed, the types of vehicles changed too. Ortkiese and his team rigged the Micro Cinema Cameras inside and outside a variety of vehicles, from taxis to a BMW i8, as well as on a Go Kart and even a camel.

“During the BMW driving experience, we wanted to chase a race car, so we mounted a Micro Cinema Camera to the front bumper of a BMW i8, as well as to the follow car, and chased the BMW at 130 mph around the racetrack. The footage came out fantastic,” explained Ortkiese. “In Morocco, we also strapped Micro Cinema Cameras to the front and back of a Go Kart driving at 60 mph, which is naturally going to be shaky because of the lack of suspension. The camera’s high refresh rate helped with image stability and overall, it eliminates any other sports camera on the market.”

Additional mounts included B roll of taxis from each location. “In every country, we needed to get a point-of-view driving shot on top of a taxi, looking over the sign on the roof. The only exception was in North Africa where we used a camel instead,” noted Ortkiese. “One of our camera operators was tasked with capturing these shots, so he would grab a Micro Cinema Camera, find a taxi, or a camel, rig the camera and drive around for 45 minutes. It was very ‘grab and go’ in that respect, and the biggest thing about these small cameras is that you don't have to use a ton of rigging, which lets you be more efficient, creative and organic while shooting.”

“The show definitely has a comedic element, and with comedy, you can’t get too frustrated with changes in the creative; you have to go with the flow,” he added. “Having a tool like the Micro Cinema Cameras on set helped as it allowed us to seamlessly incorporate them into a scene and capture spur of the moment content. For example, totally impromptu, we attached one to a fake bull head, shooting through its horns for a special chase shot.”

Ortkiese concluded, “We have some unbelievable footage because of the Micro Cinema Cameras, including important and stylistic action shots. Such a little action camera with 12-bit RAW and interchangeable lenses make it a step above many other small action cameras, giving us the ability to control and match footage in extreme environments.”

In dual-receiver mode, the corresponding BNCs automatically convert to video outputs.Transceiver SFPs are also supported for maximum operational flexibility.

From there, users can mix any combination of optical and copper connections to achieve the desired balance of inputs and outputs. The VF-9000 automatically recognizes the SFP module connections, and transitions to the proper configuration upon coming online. A robust multiplexer feature, effortlessly combines 18 signals over one single-mode fiber for efficient, high-density signal transport.

At the 2018 NAB Show, MultiDyne will demonstrate new hot-swappable flexibility that takes further advantage of the system’s card-based architecture. VF-9000 users can now replace any of the video with an Ethernet fiber converter, SYNC, HDMI-to-SDI, audio or data. Many additional fiber and non-fiber conversion cards will be available throughout 2018.

The system also differentiates itself from competitive systems by offering two hot- swappable AC power supplies to establish redundancy, eliminating the need to fiddle with external power supplies in fast-paced live production environments.

LENEXA, Kan. — Feb. 14, 2018 — LynTec, a leading manufacturer of innovative electrical power control solutions for professional audio, video, and lighting systems, has enhanced its award-winning Networkable Power Automation Control (NPAC) rack-mounted system with a new outbound relay (O/R) control option that allows users to control external devices equipped with contact closures as part of their AV lighting (AVL) control platform.

"The new O/R control option for the NPAC extends control beyond the rack area," said Mark Bishop, president ofLynTec. "Now users can integrate the control of far-flung devices into the browser-based control interface onboard every NPAC. If, for example, they need to trigger a line array on as part of the audio system, they could integrate that action into their audio powering sequence. Use of just one power control platform to control every device in the AVL platform not only simplifies user operation but also significantly reduces maintenance and repair costs."

LynTec's NPAC is a complete, ready-to-install power management solution that incorporates power control and audio sequencing in a single 2RU unit that can manage up to 80 amps. Introduced to LynTec's leading range of electrical power control solutions in 2017, it is the industry's first and only system capable of sequencing on/off complex digital audio systems in easy-to-program, extended step rates that guarantee proper component boot-up automatically.

Available as a factory option for new NPAC systems — as a replacement for the DMX IN and OUT connections — the optional O/R feature adds two single-pole, double-throw, 2-amp, low-voltage relays for independent control of devices external to the NPAC. The NPAC GUI makes it easy to configure the contacts for individual or merged functions with latched or momentary operation.

The NPAC series is pre-terminated for easy installation and provides critical protection and control for a range of applications. For large venues or equipment spread across a facility, the system's master/remote architecture enables control for up to 10 NPAC units on a single network. Engineered to protect and control installed entertainment AVL systems, the NPAC can also control lighting and AV systems across multiple control zones and with multiple control protocols (HTTP, Telnet, sACN, DMX), and simple contact closures. From the NPAC's interface, users can select the protocol for each zone as well as set up, troubleshoot, control, and monitor status remotely across existing networks from any computer, tablet, or handheld smart device. In addition, users can receive alerts via text or email for notification of voltage anomalies.

The NPAC series includes four models — 120V or 240V to manage higher voltage loads — and features four 20-amp circuit inputs, with 4 or 8 relays, in a single 2RU enclosure, saving integrators valuable rack space over 4RU systems and eliminating the need to wire multiple units together. Circuits can fire in any order required, even from unit to unit, with no extra wiring required as long as each NPAC is connected to the network. Outlets can be controlled individually or as a sequenced group with up to 12 zones across 10 units. The unit boasts pre-terminated cables that are ready to plug into existing sources and four NEMA 5-20 outlets (6-20 outlets for the 240V model) that allow for easy connection to gear.

From the controller's embedded web server, the user can also select the appropriate over- and under-voltage protection and auto shutdown for each circuit, providing customized power protection to devices connected to the unit. Meeting NFPA fire code requirements, the system also includes circuit-selectable load-shedding for emergency shutoff. An onboard astronomical timer enables automated operation and helps facilities reduce operating costs for lighting systems, video systems, and more.

Fremont, CA — February 14, 2018 - Blackmagic Design announced today that Tokyo based production company UVN built a 12G-SDI workflow for the 4K60p live broadcast and HD stream of the Slackline World Cup Japan 2017. The workflow was built with HyperDeck Studio 12G, Teranex Mini 12G-SDI converters and a number of other Blackmagic Design broadcast products, including the ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K and Blackmagic Web Presenter.

Slackline is a popular new sport where players perform acrobatic tricks over a line only five centimeters wide and compete against each other in dexterity and beauty. The sport has millions of fans all over the world, but is still a niche sport in Japan.

To promote the Slackline World Cup, which was being held for the first time in Asia, Mr. Ikuharu Kanamori, CEO of UVN, worked along with production and streaming company Vivid to create a live broadcast and stream that would show the sport’s incredible action to a both a local and worldwide market. They provided broadcasters around the world with both 4K and down-converted HD signals and used live streaming platforms such as YouTube Live and Facebook Live to distribute the world cup around the globe.

“We used numerous Teranex Minis,” said Mr. Kanamori. “This is because they are simple, very easy to use and affordable. We also used HyperDeck Studio 12G to record a program signal so that we could extract exciting moments and broadcast highlights later. We chose HyperDeck Studio 12G because we were aiming for 12G workflow. 12G workflow is better than quad 3G workflow because the connection becomes simpler with single link 12G-SDI.”

“One of the advantages of the ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K is that it supports 4K60p. It has no less than six auxiliary outputs so you can make use of multiple program outputs in a flexible way. I also liked the fact that it has a frame synchronizer and input signals don’t need to be genlocked,” said Mr. Kanamori.

The program output was connected to Blackmagic Web Presenter for live streaming on YouTube Live and Facebook. He added: “You can achieve web streaming in high quality with Blackmagic Web Presenter and it increased opportunities for people around the globe to get to know Slackline,” continued Mr. Kanamori.

“We didn’t have rehearsals and we needed to construct a system quickly. By using Blackmagic Design products, we were able to build a system on short notice. Blackmagic Design’s product line is so extensive that you can integrate products into a system easily and smoothly. Every product we used this time was robust and the system never had a single error. I am confident that this event would not have been as successful as it was had it not been for the products from Blackmagic Design,” he concluded.
