NEW YORK—MiMojo, a new company focused on mobile content delivery, will debut its new iOS app at the Broadcast Education Alliance Conference (BEA), April 16-17, taking place in conjunction with the NAB Show in Las Vegas.

MiMojo, developed by seasoned media tech founder and mobile journalist, Mick Reed (Clippn), is designed to streamline the process of sending and receiving mobile video files for videographers, editors, producers and archivists.

MiMojo is designed to integrate with other platforms for limitless workflow options and compatibility, and is the first mobile app of its kind to address the rapidly-emerging issue of managing mobile content, the company said. MiMojo is also offering customizations for the enterprise, tailored to a media company's unique needs including enhanced security, custom metadata and caption forms, MAM/CMS integrations and mobile video workflows.

MiMojo, which is available for beta testing beginning next month, enables senders to quickly trim media files, add metadata and captions, and seamlessly upload footage, while receivers of the files can change video format specs at the point of download, assign and track footage, and optimize their workflows. Washington, D.C.—The Broadcast Education Association (BEA) has announced the first annual rankings of schools based on the creative achievement of their students.

The rankings are based on the results from the BEA Festival of Media Arts. In the last five years alone, nearly 6,000 student creative works were submitted from BEA’s more than 300 member institutions around the globe for BEA’s extensive juried process.

Schools and students can submit their creative content in multiple media categories including Audio, Documentary, Film & Video, Interactive Multimedia & Emerging Technologies, News, Scriptwriting, and Sports. Student creative work goes through a rigorous blind-juried process that includes multiple evaluations by both academic and professional experts from cross the country. 

Standards for Festival winners are quite high, the BEA said. On average, only the top 20% of entries are even considered for awards. These finalists are then judged for five levels of awards: First Place, Second Place, Third Place, Award of Excellence and the special honor of being Best of Festival. The rankings take into account both the quantity and quality of student works. For instance, Best of Festival winners are given a higher weight than Awards of Excellence.

Each school’s student achievements are then calculated and ranked for each of the seven competition categories. Additionally, there is an Overall Ranking based on a combined achievement across the multiple media creative disciplines, and specifically in this case, combined across all Festival competitions. Newer categories without five years of results were not considered for this year’s rankings. While the BEA honors outstanding achievements of both faculty and students, the rankings focus solely on student accomplishments. 

In the “2022 BEA Festival School Rankings,” 170 schools are represented with student winners. The statistics are compiled and confirmed by the BEA Festival Advisory Committee, which is made up of past Festival Chairs and Creative Directors.

Based on that methodology, the 2022 top 10 winning overall programs were:

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Pilot, an initiative of the National Association of Broadcasters, will continue its Media Technology and Innovation Scholarships program by offering up to four scholarships of $2,500 each in 2021. Students eligible to apply include current college sophomores, juniors, seniors entering graduate school and graduate students, for pursuit of studies related to broadcast engineering, media technology and innovation. The scholarships will be administered in partnership with the Broadcast Education Association.

“Pilot continues to stress the importance of attracting and educating top technologists to the broadcast industry,” said Sam Matheny, NAB’s executive vice president and chief technology officer. “These scholarships expand awareness of broadcast technology in the academic world, and can assist those students with interest in the technical elements of media to pursue their goals.”

BEA Executive Director Heather Birks added, “On behalf of BEA’s board of directors and membership, we are grateful for Pilot’s continued support. With the constantly changing environment, it’s more important than ever to assist students interested in media technology and innovation. We appreciate Pilot’s ongoing dedication to this crucial sector of academia.”

Inaugurated in 2018, the scholarship program targets academic areas that include broadcast television or radio engineering and technology as well as broadcast content creation, including sports and news production, web and online media, mobile media, media-related information technology, multiplatform audience measurement and media technology research.

The National Association of Broadcasters’ PILOT initiative will now offer 10 scholarships in partnership with the Broadcast Education Association.

In the announcement, NAB Executive Vice President/ Chief Technology Officer Sam Matheny said, “Broadcast and media technology is a fast-moving environment, and attracting and educating future leaders is a priority for PILOT and NAB. These PILOT scholarships are intended to increase academic awareness of broadcast technology, and help students prepare for a career in the technical side of the media arts. We are happy to be working with BEA on this program, as a key component of PILOT’s technology education efforts.”

The new scholarship program will provide funds up to $5,000 to “college sophomores, juniors, seniors entering graduate school and graduate students” who are studying “broadcast television or radio engineering and technology, broadcast content creation including sports and news production, web and online media, mobile media, media-related information technology, multi-platform audience measurement and media technology research.”

BEA Executive Director Heather Birks said, “BEA student members have an incredible range of media technology experience in professional and academic settings, and we are honored to offer scholarships specifically geared towards these students and their potential to help shape the future of the broadcast industry.”

The application deadline is Nov. 2, and recipients will be announced by Nov. 30. The funds will be available for recipients’ use in 2019.

WASHINGTON—Seventeen faculty and student works have been chosen by the Broadcast Education Association to receive the BEA Best of Festival King Foundation Awards—the top awards given during BEA’s Festival of Media Arts, a competitive festival open to BEA faculty and student members. 

Best of Festival winners will be honored on Monday, April 24, at BEA’s annual convention in Las Vegas during the 15th Annual BEA Best of Festival King Foundation Awards. The ceremony will feature a screening of the winning projects, and award recipients will receive a cash award of $1,000 from the Charles and Lucille King Family Foundation.

The 2017 Best of Festival winners were selected from a pool of more than 1,450 entries, representing 175+ colleges and universities in the following competitions: audio, documentary, interactive multimedia, news, scriptwriting, sports, two-year/small colleges and video.
