LAS VEGAS—Ross Video has announced an agreement to acquire Bannister Lake Software (BL Soft), a 31-year old Cambridge, Ontario-based provider of data-driven broadcast graphics. BL Soft products add to Ross’ XPression Graphics Solution Set, consolidating and automating workflows for various data feeds like branding, tickers, gaming and elections, connecting them to XPression for real-time rendering, Ross said. BL Soft’s portfolio also includes a suite of HTML5 graphics creation and publication products that drive graphics to cloud-based playout and production applications as well as websites, apps and digital signage systems.

BL Soft’s flagship product, Chameleon, revolutionizes the way real-time data is accessed and utilized, according to Ross. With a comprehensive range of sources, including news, sports, weather, elections, financial updates, closings, eSports, wagering data, promos, sponsorships, and more, Chameleon offers a single, all-in-one solution. Users can effortlessly construct stunning and dynamic tickers, L-Bars, snipes, web widgets, and full-frame graphics that showcase up-to-the-second data-driven content. Rendering can be into an HTML5 data stream or via XPression Graphics, a video stream, or both at the same time.

“We’ve known the Ross Team for a long time, watching the company grow and doing it the right way. We felt it was about time that we became an inside part of what’s going on,” said Georg Hentsch, President of Bannister Lake Software. “We’ve got some amazing technology that will really benefit from the global footprint that Ross has created.”

“We are excited to welcome the Bannister Lake Team and technology portfolio to Ross,” said David Ross, CEO of Ross Video. “We’ve enjoyed a close association with Bannister Lake for a long time and have been customers of each other. Bannister Lake includes XPression in their turnkey solutions, and Ross uses BL Soft’s technology in Ticker and Branding applications. This acquisition will unlock the opportunity to do even more together and expand the solution set we offer to our clients, especially in the realm of HTML5 graphics.”

CAMBRIDGE, Ontario—Bannister Lake recently completed a project for the Nashville-based RFD-TV, which included the transition to a new data provider, integration of real-time data into updated graphics engines, create and power graph tickers and the design and building of a custom application that allows on-air talent to select, edit and control graphic playout.

“Bannister Lake provided RFD-TV with an innovative way to take real-time data from our data provider and give our editorial teams the control they needed to customize that content,” said David Mitchell, chief technology officer at RFD-TV’s parent company, RMG. Mitchell says that the update also increased the station’s production process by enabling the graphics workflow to run through the anchor desk.

The financial application from Bannister Lake also included a sponsorship management component that allows the station to schedule and execute sponsors’ logos associated with specific graphic boards. The system automatically generates logs to reconcile logo exposure with advertising sales, Bannister Lake says.

In addition to the financial application, Bannister Lake’s Chameleon platform is now being utilized by RFD-TV, specifically to help visualize results, standings and event schedules.

For more information, visit www.bannisterlake.com.

LAS VEGAS—Bannister Lake’s booth at the 2020 NAB Show will house its Chameleon platform, as the real-time data solutions provider aims to focus on how the data aggregation and management system can add value to broadcast and OTT applications.

Since 2020 is an election, one element of the Chameleon platform that Bannister Lake plans to highlight is its enhanced election module. New features allow for the production of real-time election coverage on any screen, with Chameleon getting results from both the Associated Press and Decision Desk HQ.

Chameleon also has the ability to manage and visualize live data feeds and on-air branding content. Broadcasters, using any output device, can integrate, moderate and customize multiple live data feeds into graphic templates and provide audiences with real-time news data. Chameleon’s branding module can also control sponsors’ snipes, bugs and other promotional graphic content.

Another element that will be shown at the NAB Show will be automated infochannels. Chameleon can ingest, manage and visualize a number of data feeds that can be rendered to graphics engines, HTML 5 or NDIs. Bannister Lake has also added transit and car sharing data to the system.

In addition, Bannister Lake is integrating capabilities into Chameleon for presenting sports wagering information with on-air broadcasts.

Bannister Lake will be located at booth SL4711 during the 2020 NAB Show, which runs from April 18-22 in Las Vegas.

For more information, visit www.bannisterlake.com.

Broadcast producers using Chameleon can then track results, identify voting trends, make race calls or use DDHQ supplied calls, as well as generate graphic playlists and then use Chameleon’s RESTful API to distribute data and render graphics through broadcast graphic engines.

In addition to providing data for federal elections, DDHQ collects and reports election results for county and local offices, which can be utilized by local broadcasters.

“The product will allow broadcasters in any market, and online services, the ability to produce highly visual election coverage featuring graphics populated with up to the second results,” said Drew McCoy, president of DDHQ.

Bannister Lake will make DDHQ election data available within broadcast graphic engines, web widgets, on-set interactive touch screen displays and as customized social media content.

The future of Justin Trudeau as Canada’s Prime Minister hangs in the balance.

Elector software will help the broadcasters tell the story of election night by enabling producers and analysts who spot voting trends to translate them into an on-air graphic presentation. The software, which provides a multi-user web-based UI, allows graphics to be dragged, dropped and organized into playlist prepared for air.

The software’s Restful API can distribute real-time data to online destinations, widgets, mobile devices and AR and VR system as well.

Bannister Lake will also provide both Canadian broadcasters with professional services, including coordination with the Canadian Media Election Consortium to make sure results data is optimized for Elector, the company said.

While Elector is designed specifically for Canadian elections, Bannister Lake offers its Chameleon data management system with an election module that supports elections in the U.S. and elsewhere, the company said. Both share the ability to feed election data to broadcast graphics engines, online destinations, mobile and broadcast visualization systems like AR and VR. Widgets make it possible to customize data for specific electoral districts.

More information is available on the Bannister Lake website.

SAN FRANCISCO—If there’s an overarching goal for broadcasters looking to freshen their look or retool their brand, it’s to use new high-end graphics solutions to add context and dig deeper into the stories they’re trying to tell.

That was the goal for the Canadian media company Global Television when it began plotting how best to cover the Alberta provincial election this spring.

ChyronHego introduced its Fresh graphics-rendering solution that integrates with the Epic Games Unreal Engine 4.

But rather than installing an oversized new set, the company decided to incorporate a series of touchscreen-based web widgets that would tell a more compelling story. These web widgets incorporate live election results, historical results and key demographic data to help broadcasters expand election coverage to mobile and online devices.

ENGAGING THE AUDIENCE

Global Television used web widgets designed by Bannister Lake to illustrate connections between election results, local maps and contextual data like household income and family status. The result was a way for viewers to more simply understand and analyze regional and city-suburban voting outcomes.

The result: the creation of colorful, impactful datasets that were designed to help Global Television tell a more compelling election story.

“Election night coverage is all about results,” said Gerry Belec, director of news technology and operations at Corus Entertainment, the network’s parent company. “The touch-enabled maps and the new features in Elector allowed us to use data in new ways that genuinely engaged our audience.”

According to Georg Hentsch, president of Bannister Lake in Cambridge, Ont., these HTML5-based widgets can be launched for other live data applications, including sports and finance, and customized so that viewers can access and manage the specific content they want to consume.

Global Television also decided to employ Elector election software from Bannister Lake that helps reporters identify overall voting trends and locate races that are fluctuating dramatically or are too close to call.

At the 2019 NAB Show, Ross Video introduced its Voyager graphics platform, which is built on the Unreal 4 gaming engine and based on the Unreal’s Frontier rendering system.

The network also integrated a virtual set system that gave it the opportunity to design a customized virtual set. Using the Avid Maestro graphics suite, 4Designer 2D/3D authoring software and ProSet virtual studio, Global said it has been able to produce more compelling virtual sets, 3D graphics and animation solutions, which has led to a more visual, compelling type of news program.

“VR has allowed us to go places we couldn’t go,” Belec said. “It also means that we can tell these stories in ways that are highly visual, which is critical for good television but wasn’t a reality previously—the tools just weren’t available.”

HYPER-REALISTIC

Other companies are investing in hyper-realistic graphics to retool broadcast studio spaces, including TV2 East in Denmark. The company recently invested in a new graphics rendering engine from Ross Video, which enables the development of photorealistic scenery and realistic graphics in a virtual studio environment.

“Voyager helps us make virtual sets and augmented reality look even more realistic,” said Stuart Russell, senior communications manager for Ross Video. “It’s a great tool to enhance storytelling and help produce more engaging and compelling content.”

The new Voyager—which is built on the Unreal 4 gaming engine and based on the company’s Frontier rendering system—can be used to design photorealistic scenery for virtual sets and augmented reality. TV2, a regional television network that has been using virtual studio technology since 2012 for its news studio, will use the graphics platform as part of a full-blown virtual studio solution. The system includes graphics features like real-time reflections, dynamic texture, skeleton animation and cloth animation.

“We hope the change will give us easier access to an effective augmented reality workflow, hopefully a MOS-based workflow,” said Kasper Thor Larsen, technical chef for TV2 East.

Other manufacturers are introducing solutions that more accurately integrate disparate graphics into a newsroom scene. At the 2019 NAB Show, ChyronHego launched its Fresh graphics-rendering solution that also integrates with the Epic Games Unreal Engine 4. By tying the ChyronHego augmented reality and virtual set software into the Unreal platform, users are able to bundle text and titles into an AR scene via a 3D graphic object library that’s pre-integrated into the Unreal environment. This allows producers to add 3D elements without having to re-render them for the gaming engine.

Bannister Lake touch-enabled web widget integrates demographic data alongside historic and live election results data.

“Producers are able to tell a better story and captivate viewers through high-quality AR graphics,” said Alon Stoerman, senior product manager, live production solutions with ChyronHego. They’re also able to do it faster and easier than ever before, since Fresh can be operated as an integral part of the rundown.”

Integration with the ChyronHego CAMIO template-based asset management system can be used to incorporate AR/VS elements into a station’s news environment. This integration makes it even easier for producers to tell a better story, the company said, because AR graphics are part of the news rundown along with other graphics element.

Telling a more compelling story was also the goal for the Finnish telco provider Telia. In an effort to grow the burgeoning Finnish esports market, the company launched a new national e-sports league called “Telia Esports Series in April.” To boost its popularity and help players compete at a higher level, the series is being broadcast internationally on the Twitch channel and nationwide on Finnish television.

The program is broadcast in two locales: from a remote production hub and from a formal studio. The physical studio employs virtual reality technology Zero Density led by systems integrator Broadcast Solutions Finland. The facility switches from programs broadcast in 1080i50 to the Telia production platform of 1080p50 in a few seconds, the company said.

Corus Entertainment is one of Canada’s largest media and content companies with assets in radio, television and online. The broadcast television side of the company is a mix of over-the-air broadcast stations and specialty cable channels. Like all media organizations, it is observing dramatic shifts in audience viewing habits and in the way advertising dollars are being designated. Corus is responding proactively to address the changing media marketplace, developing innovative technology and content solutions. It is a pioneer in Canada, creating consolidated news production facilities, building a national infrastructure with sophisticated content sharing capabilities and extending their various brands across multiple platforms. Corus also broke new ground in leveraging live data; both as a content source and as a driver of video and content to new platforms. Early on, Corus saw the value that data had as an editorial source that could be extended over its many media properties and as a powerful tool to strategically distribute content.

Data empowers Corus to accomplish two essential things: add significant editorial value to its multiple media properties and secondly, open new market opportunities driving untapped ad revenue. To meet these objectives and take full advantage of their data and content, Corus’ Global News division turned to Bannister Lake, a leading provider of professional video graphic display solutions for broadcast.

In working with Corus, Bannister Lake focused on three essential data-rich areas: elections, information tickers and creating new media products and services. Across Global News’ broadcast operations, Bannister Lake’s Elector election race software is being used to produce municipal, provincial and federal coverage. Elector allows editorial staff to quickly and effectively filter race results, identify important trends, make race calls and in turn populate and display dynamic election graphics on-air or online.

“Elector has become our go-to software solution for all our election coverage. It works great on municipal, provincial and federal races. Both our editorial and technical staff love its ease of use and quick implementation,” says Gerry Belec, director of news technology and operations at Corus Entertainment.

Across Global News, Bannister Lake powers L-Bars, tickers, and sponsor logos on all the local morning news programs. The key tool Global News uses to make all this possible is Bannister Lake’s Chameleon software. Chameleon provides Global News with a single data/graphics management solution that drives a wide variety of graphic playout devices across the entire Global News organization. By centralizing data through Chameleon, Corus not only realizes operational efficiencies, but also permits broadcast sales to create new media products and sell both national and local sponsorships on all its broadcast tickers. Editorially, Chameleon enables Global News to integrate the widest possible variety of data sources on-air, including social media feeds, financial data, sports scores, closings and atypical feeds such as community events calendars.

Corus foresees Chameleon playing an expanded and valuable role as the media company develops and launches multi-platform solutions, expands online, distributes more content via partnerships and explores innovative media opportunities.

Global News takes advantage of BLADE, Chameleon’s RESTful API feature, allowing them to manage and distribute specific portions of a data feed. With BLADE, Global News can effortlessly direct their content to various output channels including thousands of screens across digital signage networks in multiple cities across Canada. This has fostered new revenue and promotional opportunities for Corus and has dramatically improved brand recognition. BLADE allows Global News to target specific end points strategically with content designated for that output.

Corus and Global News further benefit from Bannister Lake’s development strategy that emphasizes multi-user, web-based solutions while still maintaining high levels of security. Teams from across the country can simultaneously access the solution, load content, query data and create and edit playlists, but only according to their user status. Should unusual operational issues emerge, Bannister Lake’s development team can write custom code resolving the issue.

“We look forward to a long and creative partnership with Corus. We are thrilled that our software and custom services can be plugged into so many aspects of their business”, says Georg Hentsch, Bannister Lake’s founder.

LAS VEGAS—We’re edging closer to the 2020 presidential election, and Bannister Lake looks to help broadcasters with their coverage with new updates to its Chameleon data and graphics management platform. This new update, along with more for sponsorship and security functionality, will be part of the company’s presentation at the 2019 NAB Show.

Chameleon’s updates to its election race modules provide producers with more options to ingest and manage result data feeds, referendums, propositions and acclaimed candidates. The new features also help drive online, mobile and social media election experiences by feeding data to web widgets and automatically sending out tweets based on Chameleon data conditions so producers can visualize election results interactively.

Bannister Lake has also updated its sponsorship module to track and connect campaigns to specific sponsors. There are also enhanced security features aligned with NIST guidelines with improved password protection. Other new features for the Chameleon include enhanced Twitter search capabilities and an improved media module with the introduction of bins for organizing content and enabling multifile uploads.

The NAB Show will also serve as the introduction for a new version of the Chameleon NDI player, allowing NDI users to manage and visualize live data feeds. This new version enables users to integrate, moderate and customize multiple live data feeds into graphic templates so to provide audiences with real-time news, weather, sports, social media, financial and customized data.

Another product to be on display at Bannister Lake’s booth is the Zeus media storage and playout system. Designed for image- and clip-intensive production environments, Zeus allows for easy access to content. The Zeus system can be fully integrated with popular MAM systems.

Outside of the company’s booth, Bannister Lake’s Creative and Technical Director Al Savoie will present his co-authored white paper, “New Methodologies in Real-Time Data Aggregation and Management for Broadcast Presentation and Distribution,” during NAB’s Broadcast Engineering and Information Technology Conference on April 10 at 4 p.m. in room N260 of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Bannister Lake will display all of its latest products at its booth, SL5616. The addition of BXF is meant to be complementary to Brando’s interactive scheduling capabilities and existing, vendor-specific traffic systems integrations. Brando can now automatically import BXF-compliant scheduling data and export BXF-formatted as-runs through its BLADE API.

Examples of Brando’s use with third-party system include integration with Ross Video’s Xpression motion graphics system, with the software supporting an unlimited number of channels in a single on-premises server or cloud-based installation, as well as Bannister Lake’s Super Ticker data aggregation system for data-rich broadcasts.

The new BXF support is available immediately for new Brando systems and as a free upgrade for existing customers.

CAMBRIDGE, ONTARIO—Bannister Lake Software has introduced the Super Ticker Chameleon graphic and data platform, an expansion of the company’s Super Ticker data aggregation and display family of products. Chameleon is a data presentation, management and playout system that can be used as a standalone system or with a third-party broadcast CG system.

Chameleon features a new graphics editor that lets users design layouts and link them directly to Super Ticker’s advanced data management tools. An unlimited number of zones can be independently defined for presentation of data types. Rundowns allow for control of the content played in each zone, while integrated scheduling enables channels to be fully automated across multiple layouts.

The system has a new hybrid player module that complements Super Ticker’s existing native and BLADE-based, third-party CG integrations for baseband SDI, IP and web-based outputs. It also offers support for NewTek’s NDI IP technology for real-time graphic and alpha channel playout from Chameleon to other NDI-enabled systems over an IP network. WebGL support allows rendering of the player’s output directly within HTML5 web pages.

Bannister Lake will release the Super Ticker Chameleon in the fourth quarter of 2016. It will be available as an add-on option for existing Super Ticker users or bundled with Super Ticker for new customers.

This cloud-based offering will run on Amazon Web Services and provide Super Ticker users new levels of scalability and accessibility, per the company’s press release.

Like the Super Ticker on-premises installation, Super Ticker Cloud can aggregate, manage and moderate automated data feeds from external sources through a consistent web-based interface. Users can combine data with manual input and original content for applications that include 24/7 news channels, broadcast programs, special event coverage, sports and venue displays. It also improves on its ability for multi-user collaboration.

Super Ticker Cloud is available on Amazon Web Services via a subscription. Alternatively, users can purchase Super Ticker Cloud for their preferred cloud provider or private cloud. Automated data replication can also be leveraged to create hybrid workflows between on-premises Super Ticker deployments and the Super Ticker Cloud.

Users can sign up for a Super Ticker Cloud subscription on a monthly or yearly basis.
