LONDON—IBC has unveiled the finalists for the IBC2025 Innovation Awards, recognising collaborative projects that address real-world challenges and deliver transformative innovation across the media, entertainment and technology landscape. The IBC Innovation Awards span five categories – Content Creation, Content Distribution, Content Everywhere, Social Impact, and Environment & Sustainability – honouring innovators in technical excellence and social progress together in one unified celebration of global industry advances.

“We are very grateful indeed to our panel of judges for their wisdom and insight in choosing our shortlists as the standard of entries, from all around the globe, was so consistently high this year,” said Fergal Ringrose, Chair of the 2025 Innovation Awards Jury. “Innovation never sleeps, and this year we can clearly see an evolution away from technology lurches enforced by the COVID-19 pandemic period towards greater refinement of innovation across the electronic media content creation, distribution and consumption ecosystem, often driven by advancing AI, hybrid and cloud-enhanced workflows.” (Jenny Priestley, Content Director for TV Tech sister brand TVBEurope is on the judging panel.)

The winners of the IBC2025 Innovation Awards will be announced on the main stage of the IBC Conference in the RAI Amsterdam at 1800 CEST, Sunday, Sept. 14.

Content Creation:
MBC, Pixtree and SK Telecom for AI-assisted remastering – Commercialization of a generalized AI-based video remastering system for Korean terrestrial broadcaster MBC, working with partners Pixtree and SK Telecom.

IP-based multiviewer editorial workflow for Paris 2024 – For NBC Olympics' gymnastics coverage at Paris 2024. Over 60 live sources captured the action with a mosaic-based editorial workflow. In collaboration with Avid, EVS and NEP.

Deep Ocean: Kingdom of the Coelacanth – Produced by NHK Japan, in co-production with ZDF/ARTE and OceanX, in collaboration with CMMAI, captured in 8K and 22.2 sound the world’s first-ever video footage of a group of coelacanths. Technical support was provided by GOTO Aquatics, SGO and Restar.

Content Distribution:
Crunchyroll Anime Awards localisation and distribution – Tokyo event went live to the global anime community combining dubbing studios and scalable live streaming. In partnership with Amagi, AWS, Bridge Digital and Pixelogic.

Sky's MediaMesh, a transformation of large-scale, software-defined, broadcast operations – Sky Group integrated with the systems and workflows of broadcasters across Europe to deliver an API-driven, cloud-native, modular platform. With AWS, SDVI, Telestream, and TMT Insights.

OBS hybrid streaming delivery for Paris 2024 – Olympic Broadcasting Services, with Alibaba Cloud, transformed live sports streaming by combining a traditional pipeline with a direct, cloud-based path from venue to viewer.

Content Everywhere:
Claro tv+ and Omni Devices unify football passion – With a remote control featuring a button with the user’s favourite team crest, taking them directly to a live game across any channel or app. Technical support: Gracenote and Teleidea Middleware.

SVT-AV1: Alliance for Open Media, Intel and Meta – Made video streaming viable on low-end mobile devices and low-bandwidth networks, via development of decoding-aware mode of the SVT-AV1 software encoder.

Pilipinas Live Shorts’ vertical infinite-scroll featuring UGC – Created by OTT streaming platform Cignal and powered by Quickplay Shorts along with Twelve Labs, it uses AI to identify, clip and reformat VOD and Live-to-VOD content while also incorporating UGC into the shorts’ feed.

Social Impact:
Neurodiversity mentoring programme – Media Talent Manifesto is leading a pioneering global initiative supporting neurodivergent professionals in the media and broadcast sector. Supporters include Deluxe, Molinare and Vizrt.

Amplifying riverside voices in the Amazon – SOUV from SNEWS enables newsrooms to receive real-time content from underserved regions through mobile contribution. In partnership with Rede Amazônica.

Empowering citizen advocacy and social justice through technology – The Mobile Justice app, developed with the American Civil Liberties Union, enables citizens to document law enforcement encounters in real-time and upload evidence for review. Technical partners are Jotto, Quadrant2 and Wowza.

France Télévisions pioneers transparency and trust in journalism – In partnership with Dalet, the broadcaster is the first in the industry to implement a C2PA-enabled content authentication in its daily workflow for the Journal de 20h newsroom.

Environment & Sustainability:
Evoke 5000B – For film and TV lighting by Nanlux. Delivers a similar output to a 20,000W tungsten light from a 5,000W LED draw. It reduces energy use by approximately 75%, with battery support. Sustainability is also at the core of the production process.

Energy-Efficient UHD Upscaling with NPU Acceleration for Sustainable IPTV Service – Korea’s SK Telecom, with Pixtree, developed an NPU-based live UHD upscaler and integrated it into SK Broadband’s IPTV service (Btv) live channels, serving 6.7 million subscribers while achieving 80% energy reduction and preventing 3,728 tons CO₂eq emissions annually.

Green Film Shooting – An independent initiative in Germany for the film and media industry to spread word via its platforms about innovative solutions that help to increase energy efficiency, save resources and cut carbon emissions.

The IBC2025 Awards ceremony will also feature the presentation of the IBC International Honour for Excellence, which recognizes outstanding contribution to the industry, and the Best Technical Paper, drawn from the peer-reviewed papers presented at the IBC Conference, Sept. 12-14.

WASHINGTON—America’s Public Television Stations (APTS) honored two members of Congress from both sides of the aisle at its annual meeting here with the “Champion of Public Broadcasting Award.”

Reps. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) and Mike Simpson (R-ID) received the organization’s highest honor, “given annually to champions in Congress and state government for their extraordinary support of public television,” the APTS said.

“Congresswoman Debbie Dingell has shown unwavering leadership as a champion of public television for her entire Congressional career and beyond, recognizing the valuable services public broadcasting provides to the people of Michigan and throughout our nation,” APTS said.

Growing up in beautiful Michigan, Dingell, who chairs the Great Lakes Task Force, has always been an advocate for the outdoors and commits her work in Congress to protecting the environment for generations. Congresswoman Dingell is focused on bringing people together – in Congress and in her communities – to support Michigan’s families and the economy. This is most evident in her work to strengthen the American auto industry, maintaining America’s competitiveness and ensuring good-paying American jobs.

She was also Chairman of the Wayne State University (WSU) Board of Governors and to this day continues to fight for affordable and accessible education in Congress. She chaired the Michigan Infant Mortality Task Force, the Children’s Leadership Council of Michigan, the Early Childhood Investment Corporation, the Baby Your Baby public education campaign that reduced infant mortality rates in Michigan, and has served on the board of Michigan’s Children, a statewide independent voice advocating for public policies in the best interest of children of all ages.

An active civic and community leader, Dingell is a recognized national advocate for women and children. She successfully fought to have women included in federally funded health research and advocated for greater awareness of women’s health issues overall, including breast cancer and heart health. She is a founder and former chair of the National Women’s Health Resource Center and the Children's Inn at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Congresswoman Dingell currently resides in Ann Arbor. She holds both a B.S.F.S. in Foreign Services and an M.S. in Liberal Studies from Georgetown University.

Congressman Simpson’s longstanding support has been invaluable to advancing the public service mission of local public television stations, particularly those serving rural areas, APTS said.

Congressman Mike Simpson is a proud Idaho native who was born in Burley and raised in Blackfoot. Simpson graduated from Utah State University and earned his DMD from Washington University School of Dental Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. After graduation, Simpson joined his father and uncle at the Simpson Family Dental Practice in Blackfoot before serving in the Blackfoot City Council and eventually in the Idaho State Legislature.

After spending four years on the Blackfoot City Council, Congressman Simpson was elected to the Idaho Legislature where he served until 1998. Simpson also served as Speaker of the House during his last six years in the State Legislature.

Congressman Simpson was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1999 and has served Idaho’s second congressional district for thirteen terms.

Currently, Congressman Simpson serves as Chairman of the House Interior and Environment Subcommittee on Appropriations. He also serves on the House Energy and Water Development Subcommittee and the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education Subcommittee on Appropriations.

TV Tech has announced its Best of Show Awards for the 2024 IBC Show which ends today in Amsterdam. The awards were judged by a panel of industry experts on the criteria of innovation, feature set, cost efficiency and performance in serving the industry.

All nominees will be featured in a Best of Show Program ebook, available soon. Winners will be published in the October issue of TV Tech. WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. —SMPTE has announced the recipients of its 2024 honors. The honorees will be recognized at its annual Awards Gala in the Ray Dolby Ballroom within the Ovation Hollywood on Thursday, Oct. 24, at the conclusion of the 2024 SMPTE Media Technology Summit.

SMPTE Executive Director David Grindle stated: "This year's SMPTE honorees have touched every corner of the industry from artificial intelligence to archiving. The strength of SMPTE lies within its members, and the annual awards gala is our chance to celebrate them."

This year, 15 honors will be bestowed upon 35 individuals and organizations. Among these is the supreme accolade of the Society, Honorary Membership, which recognizes individuals who have performed eminent service in the advancement of engineering in motion pictures, television, or in the allied arts and sciences, counting the likes of Thomas Edison, George Eastman, Samuel L. Warner, David Sarnoff, Walt Disney, Ray Dolby, George Lucas, Richard Edlund, James Cameron, and Peter Jackson among its ranks.

This year, Honorary Membership will be conferred on three individuals:

Ioan Allen is recognized for his enduring contributions to audio production and presentation technologies. His innovations at Dolby Laboratories and involvement in SMPTE, AES, and ICTA have fostered collaboration within the professional community, and have established new standards, including groundbreaking audio formats.

Franz Kraus is acknowledged for advancing the cinematography vision of the ARRI corporation. Kraus successfully led the company into the digital age by developing digital film scanners and cameras, resulting in the ARRI ALEXA camera suite becoming one of the most popular products in the entertainment industry today.

Finally, Victoria Alonso is recognized for her contributions as a producer and entertainment industry leader. Alonso relentlessly communicates her story vision to artisans and technicians and is a strong and outspoken champion for under-represented groups in the entertainment industry.

The David Sarnoff Medal, sponsored by SRI International, was established in 1950 and recognizes outstanding contributions to the development of new techniques or equipment that have improved the engineering phases of television technology. This year, John Mailhot will be honored in recognition of his role in promoting the adoption of the SMPTE ST 2110 standard for the carriage of media over IP, not just through SMPTE but also through industry organizations such as AMWA, AIMS, and the VSF.

The Excellence in Education Medal, sponsored by William C. Miller and Ellen Sontag-Miller, was established in 2016 and recognizes outstanding contributions to new or unique educational programs that teach the technologies of motion-imaging sciences, including emerging media technology. This year, SMPTE recognizes Chaitanya Chinchlikar for his efforts, alongside Whistling Woods International – India's premier Film & Creative Arts institute, to mainstream media and entertainment education in India and to incorporate emerging technologies into the curriculum, such as virtual production, cinematic VR, AI, and cloud computing.

The Workflow Systems Medal, sponsored by Leon D. Silverman, was established in 2012, and recognizes outstanding contributions related to the development and integration of workflows that enhance creativity, collaboration, efficiency, or novel approaches to the production, post-production, or distribution process. This year, SMPTE will honor Unreal Engine, in recognition of its contributions to media production and its role in enabling new options for creators. Unreal Engine's advanced rendering capabilities and real-time visualization tools have created opportunities for virtual production and previsualization, providing powerful new workflows that augment and enhance the creative toolkit.

The Digital Processing Medal was established in 2012 and recognizes significant technical achievements related to the development of digital processing of content for motion pictures, television, games, or other related media. This year, the award will be presented to Dr. Jens-Rainer Ohm, in recognition of his leadership in the development of several widely successful MPEG and ITU video compression standards. Ohm is widely recognized as a world-class expert and thought leader in video compression and image processing.

The Camera Origination and Imaging Medal was established in 2012 and recognizes significant technical achievements related to invention or advances in imaging technology. This year, the award will be conferred posthumously on Takashi Nakamura for the development of a practical video system comprising a high-frame-rate camera and video recorder with easy replay.

The James A. Lindner Archival Technology Medal, sponsored by Mr. Lindner, was established in 2012, and recognizes significant technical advancements or contributions related to the archive or preservation of media content essence. This year Karen Cariani will be honored in recognition of her pioneering contributions to advancing technology, techniques, workflows, and infrastructure for preserving and providing access to the public broadcasting archives in the U.S.

The Excellence in Standards Award recognizes those who have been actively involved in advancing Society standards activities and processes. This year's award will be presented to Paul Treleaven, in recognition of his continuous efforts to ensure prompt dissemination of information within SMPTE to partner organizations and the general public.

The Louis F. Wolf Jr. Memorial Scholarship is designed to assist students in furthering their undergraduate or graduate studies in motion pictures and television, with an emphasis on technology. The 2024 scholarship will be awarded to Gabriel Casselman of Rochester Institute of Technology.

The Citation for Outstanding Service to the Society recognizes dedicated service to SMPTE, particularly at the Section level. This year, three individuals will be honored with this award: Michael Frank Day, for his long-standing dedication to the betterment of the Society, especially the Australia, New Zealand, and Southern Pacific Islands Section; Chris Lapp, for his role as Membership Director and creator of the SMPTE Discord channel, enabling collaboration among students and young professionals worldwide; and Wes Simpson, for his many years of service to the SMPTE New York Section, and his assistance in the transition to virtual meetings.

The Journal Award for the best paper originally published in the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal during 2023 will be presented to Ievgen Kostiukevych, Mohamed Nabil Ibrahim, Pavlo Kondratenko, Thomas Kernen, and Thorsten Lohmar, for their paper, "Supporting Live Production Using Precision Time Protocol Over 5G Systems With Dedicated Time Synchronization Support." Additionally, Journal Certificates of Merit will be awarded to Erik Reinhard, Claire-Hélène Demarty, and Laurent Blonde for their paper, "Pixel Value Adjustment to Reduce the Energy Requirements of Display Devices," as well as Tom Borer for his paper, "Why Holographic 3D Light Field Displays Are Impossible, and How to Build One Anyway."

Additionally, the Student Paper Award, recognizing an outstanding paper prepared and submitted by a Student Member, will be presented to Irene Muñoz López of the University of Surrey, for her paper, "Camera Tracking Systems and their Democratisation."

Ten new SMPTE Fellows will be recognized at this year's Gala for attaining an outstanding rank among engineers or executives in media and entertainment through their proficiency and contributions to the motion-picture, television, or related industries. These individuals are Naveed Aslam, Peter Brightwell, Alexander Forsythe, Michel Proulx, Brian Quandt, Pierre-Hughes Routhier, Alexandre Rouxel, Paola Sunna, Stuart C. Young, and Gene J. Zimmerman Jr.

NEW YORK—The Broadcasters Foundation of America will honor two-time Emmy winning anchor of Inside Edition and 23-year member of the Broadcasters Foundation Board of Directors Deborah Norville with the 2024 Edward F. McLaughlin Lifetime Achievement Award. The Award is given annually to an individual who has made invaluable contributions to the television and radio industries and will be presented to Norville during the Golden Mic gala and fundraiser on March 4, 2024, at the Plaza Hotel in New York City.

“Deborah is an accomplished broadcaster who has selflessly given a tremendous amount of time and energy to the Broadcasters Foundation,” stated Scott Herman, Chair of the Foundation. “She has led the way on several initiatives, including using her talents on the Foundation’s video and serving as host of the Golden Mic Award gala numerous times. It is our privilege to honor Deborah’s achievements and contributions to broadcasting.”

“I am honored to have been chosen for this recognition and the opportunity it gives to highlight our work at the Broadcasters Foundation,” said Norville. “I have been so blessed to have my career as a television journalist  and feel supporting this organization all these years is one way of paying my debt of gratitude.”

In 2016, Norville, the longest serving anchor on American television, was inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame. She is a member of the Council for Foreign Relations, the Women’s Forum of New York, Women Corporate Directors, and a Director for the Broadcasters Foundation of America.

“Deborah is passionate about broadcasting and helping those in our business who cannot work due to illness or have been hit by tragedy,” said Tim McCarthy, President of the Broadcasters Foundation. "I’m delighted that we will honor her many career achievements and dedication to broadcasting with the Lifetime Achievement Award.”

In addition to her two Emmy Awards, Norville is the author of a number of books, including the New York Times Best Seller Thank You Power: Making the SCIENCE of Gratitude Work for YOU and The Power of Respect, detailing the measurable benefits that result from respectful behavior.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is named after Edward F. McLaughlin, who served as the Broadcasters Foundation Chair for many years and was Chairperson Emeritus at the time of his passing in 2018.

WEITERSTADT, GERMANY—Lynx Technik’s greenMachine was dubbed an audience favorite at SATIS 2017, per a company press release. The APP-based and software-defined platform won in the Diffusion & Distribution category.

The greenMachine platform offers facilities a new way to future-proof technology investments, according to Lynx Technik. Each greenMachine can be transformed into a custom processing unit to fit users’ needs by installing different apps. The greenGUI software, meanwhile, provides universal management and control to create and visualize the entire signal processing chain. A hardware device provides processing power and inputs and outputs.

AUSTIN, TEXAS—During last week’s CTA Technology & Standards Forum, Toshiba staff engineer Daniel Young was vetted with the organization’s 2016 CTA Technology Achievement Award. The award was in recognition of Young’s work in developing standards to advance digital audio and video technology.

Young has been part of CTA’s standards program since 2012, becoming chair of the Uncompressed Audio/Video Digital Interfaces Working Group in 2014. As chair, Young has overseen the completion of four documents, including CTA-861.3, “HDR Static Metadata Extensions;” Erratum to CTA-861-F, “A DTV Profile for Uncompressed High Speed Digital Interfaces;” CTA-861.3-A, “HDR Static Metadata Extensions;” and CTA-861.2, “Advanced Audio Extensions.”

“Daniel has been an amazing contributor to the CTA standards program,” said Dave Wilson, vice president, technology and standards, CTA. “His working group manages one of our most widely used standards, and under his leadership it has completed several key enhancements for our industry.”

CTA also announced that it is calling for speakers for its next Technology & Standards Forum that is set for May 9-11, 2017 in San Francisco.
