FREMONT, Calif.—Live theater got its own taste of a live broadcast production in the Tony Award-winning production of “Network” on Broadway with the help of Blackmagic Design. Video designer and cinematographer Tal Yarden used Blakcmagic’s Micro Studio Camera 4Ks, Studio Camera 4Ks, Video Assist 4K monitor/recorders, ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K and ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel both on and off stage to create the show’s very own live newscast depicting anchorman Howard Beale’s breakdown.

<img id="99XDc74Ne77ifoP3bvBHTC" name="" alt="Bryan Cranston in "Network"" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/99XDc74Ne77ifoP3bvBHTC.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/99XDc74Ne77ifoP3bvBHTC.jpg" align="" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class="pull-">

Bryan Cranston in "Network"

An adaptation of Paddy Chayefsky’s Academy Award-winning film of the same name, the Broadway version of “Network” (directed by Ivo van Hove and adapted by Lee Hall) takes place entirely in Beale’s TV studio, which thanks to the Blackmagic equipment was able to operate like a real-life studio, with cast and crew operating the equipment on and off stage to power the newsroom and feed content to onstage screens.

To do this, the Micro Studio Camera 4Ks were installed in handheld rigs with Video Assist 4Ks and wireless transmitters, while the Studio Camera 4Ks were mounted on tripods and used teleprompters during Beale’s (played by Bryan Cranston) newscasts. Cameras were also used to capture a scene that begins outside the theater on the street and then works its way inside to the stage; the scene was filmed live for each performance.

Actors who had some camera experience were responsible for handling the cameras on stage during the production.

Some of the crew who operated the ATEM switchers were also on stage during each performance. While the ATEM 2 M/E switcher operated from a rack underneath the stage, the ATEM 1 M/E was a part of the stage and used by an onstage operator. The onstage operator had to monitor the cameras, as well as followed the script for multiple ATEM cues, recalled presets on the matrix router and switched video feeds from the cameras to multiple onstage screens.

The Broadway run for “Network” came to close on in June of this year.

LANSING, Mich.—Since 2007, Apex Broadcast has specialized in live coverage of professional auto racing. We’ve built two custom OB trucks that travel to different tracks in North America with a mobile workflow that allows us to shoot about 20 races annually. Right now, we’re capturing the 2019 Blancpain GT World Challenge America, which airs monthly on CBS Sports Network on Sundays from April to October.

STOCKING THE TRUCKS

Our OB trucks are fully equipped with Blackmagic Design gear. Our larger unit is equipped for a 20-source show with an ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K live production switcher, ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Panel control panel, three ATEM Camera Control Panels, 13 URSA Broadcast professional broadcast cameras, Broadcast Videohub SDI router, four HyperDeck Studios and approximately 30 Mini Converter Optical Fiber 12G converters. Our second, smaller unit carries an ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K live production switcher, ATEM 1 M/E Broadcast Panel, 40x40 Smart Videohub SDI router and six URSA Broadcast cameras.

ATEM panels allow Apex’s crew to effectively manage the entire production from its OB trucks.

This season we are travelling to seven different tracks to cover the Blancpain GT World Challenge. From Tuesday to Thursday during a typical race week, we set up 30,000 feet of tactical fiber cables to position our gear around the track. On Friday, we set up the URSA Broadcasts along with the rest of the gear. The bigger the track, the more cameras we use to omit any blind spots for a more refined viewing experience. The shortest track we’ve worked on is just under two miles, which required eight cameras, and the longest is just over four miles, which required 12 cameras.

AWAY WE GO

On race day, our workflow is very straightforward with the ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K compact enough to live in rack—a huge plus for us. Additionally, the networking protocol gives a lot of flexibility in terms of crewing.

In our larger truck, camera shading is done from the engineering desk with three ATEM Camera Control Panels. Our video technician can manage iris, white balance and color balance of 12 cameras from these panels.

In addition to the camera’s SDI output, shading controls, audio communications, program return and tally are carried over fiber. We use the ATEM’s audio follow feature to build an effects audio sub mix of engine sounds, and our audio technician control camera levels via the ATEM’s software control.

Since auto racing is very dynamic, our technical director works from the ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Panel. Its tactile control surface facilitates faster switching than the software control, and he’s able to manage DVE effects, transitions and macros from the surface, which is important in a complex show.

The SDI router is the heart of a production truck, and our 72x144 Broadcast Videohub has given us many years of reliable service. Just like the ATEM, the router can be controlled over IP, which makes it easy to control the router from anywhere in the truck. In addition, four HyperDeck Studios allow us to capture two copies each of the clean broadcast cut (no graphics) and dirty cut (with graphics).

As we look ahead to our next race, it’s a relief to know that we can count on Blackmagic Design to deliver a premium experience for both our clients and viewers at home.

Apex Broadcast was founded by Clark Cambern in 2007 and since then has grown to include multicam video production, field production and post production.
Fremont, CA - January 29, 2019 - Blackmagic Design today announced that Josh Groban’s 21 date ‘Bridges’ tour relied on an end to end solution from Blackmagic Design, including Blackmagic URSA Broadcast camera chains, Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K and ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, for live big screen content and unique video backdrops.

Taking in major US and UK venues, including Madison Square Gardens and London’s O2 Arena, the tour’s live production was handled by video director, Stuart Merser of Vis-a-Vis Video, who was tasked with filling the huge performance spaces with an intimate and uplifting energy.

“The scale of the production was vast, with an 14 piece orchestra, a five member band and guest choirs on the main stage, as well as a smaller platform, where Josh performed a selection of quieter songs with a piano,” explains Stuart. “However, the staging for each concert was actually very pared back and simple, so that Josh could really engage with each audience on a personal level. Getting this balance right for an arena audience was key, so the tone and quality of video content had to be perfectly pitched.”

A giant 14m wide LED screen formed the entire backdrop to the main stage and featured live performance footage from Josh and his band, which was captured in Ultra HD 4K with a multicam set up comprising three URSA Broadcast and four Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K.

“Having worked with the URSA Broadcast cameras on a number of big name tours, I know they deliver stunning images for arena venues, so they were the perfect choice for such a huge video screen production. We paired the cameras with a range of 4K glass, including a Canon 90:9 box, which meant every shot on screen was flawless."

“We’ve had a lot of fun rigging the cameras to deliver some extremely creative and dynamic angles to elevate our production even further,” he continues. “For example, one of the URSA Broadcast cameras was mounted on a BlackCam B60 tracking system along the downstage edge, allowing me to move smoothly between the audience and Josh on stage for some really special moments.”

Live content was also fed through VideoDust, a real time video manipulation software, built around a series of Blackmagic capture and playback cards, and developed to create a variety of effects for a dynamic backdrop. “We were able to mix live footage of Josh with a series of graphics, such as sheet music or a sparkling, glittery background, which again added another dimension to a very simple and understated production on stage,” explains Stuart.

Stuart’s bespoke production desk is built around a Smart Videohub 40x40 router, with an ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K paired with an ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Panel to produce the big screen mix.

“My set up has to be able to cope with a huge range of staging logistics,” he explains. “Although we know the venues that we’re traveling to, we don’t always know exactly where video will be located, whether we’ll have direct sight of the stage, what lighting or weather conditions we might have to deal with, so the production system has to be as flexible and as robust as possible. So, as well as the main desk, there is a series of Teranex AV and Mini Converters to make sure we have the ability to get video out to screens, no matter what we are faced with upon arrival.”

“On a tour like ‘Bridges’, creative video production plays a crucial role, as the artist wants every audience member to feel part of the performance. Video coverage has to be crisp and clear, but it also has to complement the staging; it can’t overpower with theatrical tricks and effects,” concludes Stuart. “Blackmagic cameras and production kit give me the quality of production that can stand up to large scale projection, but also have a level of detail in their creative tools and features that allow me to create a unique mix each night to reflect the energy and electricity of each live performance.”

Press Photography

Product photos of Blackmagic URSA Broadcast, ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K, Blackmagic Camera Fiber Converter, Blackmagic Studio Fiber Converter, Smart Videohub 40x40, Teranex AV and all other Blackmagic Design products are available at www.blackmagicdesign.com/media/images.

About Blackmagic Design

Blackmagic Design creates the world’s highest quality video editing products, digital film cameras, color correctors, video converters, video monitoring, routers, live production switchers, disk recorders, waveform monitors and real time film scanners for the feature film, post production and television broadcast industries.
Fremont, CA — October 16, 2018 - Blackmagic Design announced today ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, Teranex Mini and its Mini Converters were used as part of massive indoor spatial projection system by Epson Sales Japan Corp.

Based around a 4K and 12G workflow and including 29 Epson projectors, the 360° Space Performance system is based inside the JR Shinjuku Miraina Tower and will be able to be viewed by the huge number of visitors to the tower in every elevator and the general showroom.

Epson Sales Japan Corp. is the Japanese sales division of Seiko Epson, and includes a media department that is charged with giving customers surprises and building excitement for Epson products through live and online imagery.

The new system is designed to show the growth for projection mapping with projectors across many of Seiko Epson’s markets. The department created, using Blackmagic Design equipment, a project that would let customers experience a new spatial design with the latest technologies by installing them in the elevator hall and showroom which many customers visiting the company pass by every day. Original characters expressing “Global EPSON” from around the world are projected using 29 EPSON projectors.

The video workflow for the system includes 19 units of Teranex Mini SDI to HDMI 12G and 29 Micro Converter SDI to HDMIs. 4K HDMI output by digital signage players are converted by Teranex Mini HDMI to SDI 12G into 12G-SDI and ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K then combines four layers of video signals using its chroma keying tool. The output from ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K is then converted into four streams of 3G-SDI by Teranex Mini 12G-SDI to Quad SDI, which are then converted later into HDMI by Teranex Mini SDI to HDMI 12G. The output signal is then converted into ethernet and sent to each projector.

“We intended to use chroma keying to combine video signals in our system and found ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, which supports chroma keying in 4K. The price as well as the features of ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K were perfect for this project. It had all the features we needed, including four layers of 4K chroma keying against one layer of background and an ability to change keying color in whatever way you need. Having many layers in projection mapping results in more reality and dimension. ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K was the best product for the system we wanted,” said Hiroaki Kanisawa, general manager.

He continued: “The resolution can be low when you are projecting material on a tall building outdoors, but the resolution must be higher when you have projection mapping in small spaces like our elevator hall and show room. We focused on the picture quality and color representation of the material so that customers can watch it within the distance of a few inches.”

“We’ve been using the system for many hours every day, and Blackmagic products have not failed or caused issues. The elevator hall and the showroom are the face of our company where you welcome customers. It is very important to have reliable products because it would undermine our company reputation should some problem take place in the system. I am glad to say that we find Blackmagic products highly trustworthy,” he concluded.

Press Photography

Product photos of ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, Teranex Minis, Mini Converters and all other Blackmagic Design products are available at www.blackmagicdesign.com/media/images.

About Blackmagic Design

Blackmagic Design creates the world’s highest quality video editing products, digital film cameras, color correctors, video converters, video monitoring, routers, live production switchers, disk recorders, waveform monitors and real time film scanners for the feature film, post production and television broadcast industries.
Fremont, CA - October 4, 2018 - Blackmagic Design today announced that London’s Lexhag Visual Effects has used the Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K, ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K and DaVinci Resolve Studio to develop a four head witness camera solution that has revolutionized its 3D tracking capabilities.

The system, which allows the team to easily estimate spatial information on set by filming the action from multiple points of view, has already been used on several projects, including the Netflix supernatural television series, “The Innocents."

“As a visual effects specialist, it is imperative to obtain as much information from set as possible, which is where the witness camera system comes in,” says owner of Lexhag, Alexis Haggar. “The data captured affords a visual effects artist the precision they need to accurately match move 3D geometry over live action, at frame by frame accuracy.”

To manage the logistics of capturing multi source footage, the system comprises four Micro Studio Camera 4Ks, paired with fast primes and set up in an array with the main unit camera. Signals feed into a dedicated PPU with an ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K and 4K monitor. “The Micro Cameras were the perfect solution for us. They provided a compact, scalable way to capture in 4K at an attractive price point,” Haggar adds.

Using the ATEM, the Lexhag team can genlock each camera and synchronize in real time for ultimate control. The difference between even half a frame for someone that is match moving can be enormous according to Haggar.

"You need to translate every movement into 3D with pixel perfect accuracy, so synchronization between all the angles you shoot is crucial. Luckily with the ATEM, this was as easy as a one button press. Instead of four operators with a camera each, the whole system could be deployed and operated by a single individual.”

Once shot, all the synchronized dailies footage from the system feeds directly into DaVinci Resolve Studio for data wrangling and final output to a frame based media sequence. “Using Resolve’s Multicam clip functionality, we simply lined up all the footage and were able to watch every angle playback in real time, and even edit live to reflect what we’d find most useful in visual effects.”

“It has been such a success that we’re now looking into expanding the system even further, including testing how the addition of more arrays can help us with volumetric capture for virtual reality applications,” Haggar conclude. “We’re fortunate to live at a time where technology is so accessible that we as content producers can now develop our own tailored on set solutions thanks to manufacturers such as Blackmagic Design.”

Press Photography

Product photos of ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K, DaVinci Resolve Studio, Micro Studio Camera 4K and all other Blackmagic Design products are available at www.blackmagicdesign.com/media/images.

About Blackmagic Design

Blackmagic Design creates the world’s highest quality video editing products, digital film cameras, color correctors, video converters, video monitoring, routers, live production switchers, disk recorders, waveform monitors and real time film scanners for the feature film, post production and television broadcast industries.
Singapore – September 13, 2018 - Blackmagic Design today announced that Open Cyber University of Korea has upgraded their web focused production suites with Blackmagic Design’s ATEM 2M/E Production Studio 4Ks and ATEM 1M/E Broadcast Panels. The upgrade was done to provide an easy to use and reliable production suite for the University’s teaching faculty to record and stream lessons on a day to day basis.

Open Cyber University of Korea is the largest academic exchange center in the country, holding at least 400 lectures every year to 120,000 students and delivering lessons through their website has been key to their success. To grow the production of these online lectures, the Open Cyber University of Korea has built a new HD production studio and media center around Blackmagic Design’s ATEM switchers, as well as Blackmagic Design Smart Videohub 12x12 CleanSwitch, HyperDeck Studios and Video Assists.

The new media center consists of five studios with control rooms, an advanced multimedia system that includes a high quality digital video production and network based video creation system. “The content is available to enrolled students via online streaming, so the main criteria for choosing the equipment was that it must be reliable for heavy use, yet simple for operations. The project was aimed at building HD studios for creating various e-learning content using chroma keying, electronic whiteboard, etc” said Mr. Lim, Jong Hoon, Team Head (Content Development Team), Open Cyber University of Korea.

“This particular Blackmagic Design setup was superior to other brands in terms of usability. It was fast to set up and east to operate. I especially liked that this Blackmagic Design setup was versatile with plentiful features, like Multiview and Super Source and came with ATEM Software Control and an open SDK. My favorite features were the switcher snapshot that stores different switcher states and the glitchless cutting between sources on the Smart Videohub CleanSwitch 12x12,” said Lim.

He continues, “We plan to develop more simple and advanced elearning production systems using Blackmagic Design products and its SDK in evolving as elearning content does. In Korea, Blackmagic Design products have a good reputation in the market and has the best value in its price range so we believe it will be the best buy.”

Press Photography

Product photos of Blackmagic Design’s ATEM 2M/E Production Studio 4K, ATEM 1M/E Broadcast Panel, Smart Videohub 12x12, CleanSwitch, HyperDeck Studio, Video Assist, and all other Blackmagic Design products are available at www.blackmagicdesign.com/media/images

About Blackmagic Design

Blackmagic Design creates the world’s highest quality video editing products, digital film cameras, color correctors, video converters, video monitoring, routers, live production switchers, disk recorders, waveform monitors and real time film scanners for the feature film, post production and television broadcast industries.
Fremont, Ca — August 30, 2018 - Blackmagic Design announced today that Japan’s CyberZ built a new eSports studio in its media department around Blackmagic Design’s ATEM live switching products, including ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Panel and ATEM 1 M/E Broadcast Panel. CyberZ is also using Blackmagic Design’s Teranex AV, UltraStudio 4K, DeckLink Studio 4K, Smart Videohub 12x12 and HyperDeck Studio products in the new studio.

CyberZ is a company specializing in smartphone advertising, smartphone media and advertising technology. Its headquarters is in Tokyo and its branches include Sendai, San Francisco, South Korea and Taiwan. The media department in CyberZ, called OPENREC, started OPENREC.tv, a platform for game play videos on smartphones, where every user can post game play videos with audio commentaries. OPENREC renovated and reopened a studio called OPENGREC Studio, where users can produce live or recorded programs as well as invite users to produce material to post on his or her page.

“We had an OPENREC Studio in Shinjuku previously, but we decided to build a new studio, which is three times bigger and has better equipment, because the market for eSports and smartphone game play videos is thriving and we want to invigorate the industry more. We mainly live stream programs and hold league series or tournaments for smartphone games in the studio. In the live streaming programs we invite professional gamers, game loving voice actors and comedians,” said Kosuke Eda, a technical director of OPENREC who supervises the studio.

Gamers who perform better than others can get invitations to the studio to record and stream material. OPENREC not only provides a platform for gameplay videos but also invites users to the studio and supports them technically. Many users dream of the invitation and this is one of the many methods OPENREC uses to try to keep users motivated.

ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K’s program output is recorded on HyperDeck Studio. The other program output is sent to Teranex AV and after being up converted to Ultra HD, the signal is fed to DeckLink Studio 4K for capture. They fully make use of the macro feature available on the ATEM switcher, enabling the automation of usual operations.

Mr. Eda continues: “We like ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K because it has many input ports, it is easy to arrange elements in the picture and you can control it via ethernet. You can control ATEM from anywhere you want as long as you have access to it by network. In the live streaming of gameplays, it is important to reflect current scores and update texts in real time. One of the advantages of ATEM is that you can create and export stills on Photoshop flexibly and put them on the program. HyperDeck Studio is useful not only for recording but also for playing material like replays and scores.”

He continued: “We hold events frequently outside Tokyo so we carry around a small rack system set up with Teranex AV and UltraStudio 4K inside a suitcase. We find the flexibility of Teranex AV highly valuable in streaming productions outside our studio, because video formats required for streaming are sometimes different from what we had expected and resolutions requested can change at the last minute. As powerful and versatile as Blackmagic products are, they are small and can fit in a rack so they are easy to carry from one place to another.”

“We have three big studios in the OPENREC Studio. Every video signal from all the studios are monitored and controlled in the master room. It is equipped with Smart Videohub 12x12, which is used to route video signals from each studio to the entrance and each studio. There are many video feeds from game consoles but Smart Videohub 12x12 is helpful in organizing inputs and outputs via PC. I like the fact that Blackmagic products can be controlled by network as long as they have ethernet ports. We had no hesitation in choosing Blackmagic products for the new studio, because we had already been using them and knew that they are extremely reliable. I think that the quality of OPENREC.tv is greatly improved by Blackmagic products which can be utilized flexibly and creatively,” he concluded.

Press Photography

Product photos of ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Panel, ATEM 1 M/E Broadcast Panel, Teranex AV, DeckLink Studio 4K, UltraStudio 4K, Smart Videohub 12x12, HyperDeck Studio and all other Blackmagic Design products are available at www.blackmagicdesign.com/media/images.

About Blackmagic Design

Blackmagic Design creates the world’s highest quality video editing products, digital film cameras, color correctors, video converters, video monitoring, routers, live production switchers, disk recorders, waveform monitors and real time film scanners for the feature film, post production and television broadcast industries.
Fremont, CA - June 8, 2018 - Blackmagic Design today announced that the 2. Basketball-Bundesliga, Germany’s second tier national basketball league, has developed a live production workflow using broadcast infrastructure from Blackmagic Design to live stream matches from venues across the country.

Developed with support from Teltec AG, each of the sixteen portable production units (PPU) comprises two Micro Studio Camera 4K and a pair of Blackmagic Studio Cameras for acquisition, while an ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K is used for vision mixing.

As a rights owner, the Basketball-Bundesliga partnered with OTT service airtango to facilitate the live streaming of league matches. “Not only did we want to broadcast matches online, we also wanted to produce highlights packages and coverage of press conferences as well as club news, which fans could access for free,” explains Daniel Müller, managing director, 2. Basketball-Bundesliga.

He continues: “From the outset we wanted to enable clubs to deliver the best digital experience possible. To ensure that content is treated with consistency we’ve standardized our production workflow around a PPU system that is powerful yet user friendly.”

Müller explains that each club takes responsibility for assembling its own production crew, and they are encouraged to create content that helps bring fans more exclusive access to the team and its progress. “Each system is incredibly intuitive and provides enough creative flexibility that means clubs can experiment with the type of content they produce on the court and off.”

Match action is acquired in 1080i/50 from a pair of cameras in courtside and steadycam positions, while two fixed camera positions above each hoop supply the ‘basketcam’ shots. Live signals are taken into a bespoke production rack, where the ATEM switcher brings together graphics, scoring overlays, commentary and ambient audio.

“To achieve this, the livestreams have to reflect the speed, tension and excitement on the court and translate it for an online audience, so our footage has to be fast paced and accurate,” explains Müller. “Delivering nationwide, broadcast quality livestreams has been a massive long term project, requiring careful planning, budgeting and training, and Blackmagic Design’s pricing, reliability and high quality production have been essential in its successful deployment.”

A live program mix from stadiums around Germany is then uploaded to airtango where multiple live games can be streamed concurrently.

“The OTT offering not only enables clubs to establish a direct relationship with their fans but also help us as a league to grow the sports fanbase throughout Germany in a way that was never previously possible,” concludes Müller. A good content strategy underpinned by the right technology providers such as Blackmagic Design will allow us to better understand fans and deepen engagement.”

Press Photography

Product photos of Blackmagic Studio Camera, Micro Studio Camera, ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K and all other Blackmagic Design products are available at www.blackmagicdesign.com/media/images.

About Blackmagic Design

Blackmagic Design creates the world’s highest quality video editing products, digital film cameras, color correctors, video converters, video monitoring, routers, live production switchers, disk recorders, waveform monitors and real time film scanners for the feature film, post production and television broadcast industries.

Fremont, CA - June 7, 2018 - Blackmagic Design today announced that Ocala, Florida-based NOW Church has installed an URSA Broadcast professional broadcast camera, ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K live production switcher and ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel hardware control panel. The products will be used to help capture 4K footage of NOW Church’s high energy worship and concert like productions, as well as interviews, video announcements, and music segments viewed by its global audience.

Best known for its creativity and stewardship, NOW Church is a fast growing multicultural Christian church located in Ocala, Florida. With its active local congregation and international reach, the church’s weekly Sunday sermons and other events are aired via local Florida broadcasters, as well as online through its broadcast quality online campus that’s viewed in more than 125 countries.

Ricky Perinchief of Proton Global Media Group installed the URSA Broadcast, ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel, and ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K at NOW Church and helped integrate the system to accompany its existing workflow that included URSA Mini Pro, Micro Studio Camera 4K, Blackmagic Studio Camera, and other ATEM production switchers. The URSA Broadcast with a Video Assist 4K and the URSA Mini Pro with an URSA Studio Viewfinder act as the main cameras, alongside five Micro Studio Camera 4Ks that are set up around the church to capture all angles of the pastor and band for sermons, concerts and other church events. Two of the Micro Studio Camera 4Ks are wireless, including one on a track on the ceiling controlled by a remote control chassis, and one on a DJI Ronin M Stabilizer.

The cameras are fed into the ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, two via wireless transmitters, with the ATEM located 120 feet away from the main stage. All of the outputs of the switcher are fed into a Smart Videohub 20x20 and routed to the return camera outputs and campus televisions in the pastor’s study, the nursery, and the church lobby. The team also uses two HyperDeck Studio Pros to record the program output and a clean feed output to use for B-roll.

“We are very impressed with the URSA Broadcast,” said Ricky. “The full length of the zoom range is awesome. We use it with two different HD B4 lenses, and there’s no softness on the edges. We are able to use the entire zoom ratio even at F1.7. I think that opens up a whole other market of churches. Even those that aren’t lit properly for broadcast, with this camera they would be able to gain down the lens at F1.7 to give them the brightness they need. We’re very happy with the camera’s native 2/3” sensor and the abundance of buttons and switches. Whether you’re in the studio world or ENG world doing remote work, this camera has everything you need, and the price point is unbeatable.”

Using the ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K to switch the camera feeds has allowed NOW Church to be more flexible than ever before. “In the church world having something that is more versatile, like the ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, is great,” said Ricky. “Our clients use the different M/Es for things like broadcast, IMAG and in house projection. Having the ability to do more with different feeds for different places is a very cool option. It is very easy to go between the M/Es on the ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel, because everything is laid out so well.”

In addition to operating during the weekly sermons on Sundays, NOW Church’s control room doubles as a recording studio during the week. By using the ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel to control the ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, Ricky has streamlined the switching process during broadcasts, as well as the process of converting the control room to a recording studio. The panel’s mobility and power over Ethernet allow his team to easily move the setup between rooms.

“We love the T-bar, the shortcuts with the macros and how everything is laid out on the panel,” said Ricky. “It’s very user friendly and everything is where it needs to be. For the church world, having something at this price point is huge. For the functionality it has, I think it’s a no brainer. Then when our broadcast is over, we can easily move the ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel from the desk in the control room to a separate engineering room. That way, everything stays on the network and we only have that one cable to plug in for the panel, which gives us everything we need. It’s super lightweight and well built. This would also be a great feature for mobile trucks, or other control rooms like ours that are multi-purpose.”

He continued, “We also have Micro Studio Camera 4Ks at various points in the room, and beingable to have the ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel control the PTZ type functions of the pan and tilt heads for these cameras is incredible. I think macros are where it’s headed in the industry. With this panel, that’s easy to do.”

Ricky concluded by saying, “What these products do is give the user options with their price points and 12G-SDI features. You can have SDI across the board. You can convert SDI to HDMI if needed. You can do 4K now or in the future. Blackmagic Design really connects the dots and gets what people need. That’s a huge plus for churches, especially those run by volunteers. To have everything talk to each other, to be able to recall your template and have everything snap back to the way it was, to load your graphics, to get your DSKs programmed, to get your cameras colored and matched up the way they need to be, and then have it snap back with one button is great. Blackmagic Design takes the guess work out of it.”

Press Photography

Product photos of URSA Broadcast, ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel, URSA Mini Pro, Micro Studio Camera 4K, Blackmagic Studio Camera, Video Assist 4K, URSA Studio Viewfinder, Smart Videohub 20x20, HyperDeck Studio Pro and all other Blackmagic Design products are available at www.blackmagicdesign.com/media/images.

About Blackmagic Design

Blackmagic Design creates the world’s highest quality video editing products, digital film cameras, color correctors, video converters, video monitoring, routers, live production switchers, disk recorders, waveform monitors and real time film scanners for the feature film, post production and television broadcast industries.
