Blackmagic Design announced a range of new products it will launch at the 2026 NAB Show, April 18-22 in Las Vegas, led by its first immersive camera system for Apple Vision Pro.

The Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive 100G is being billed as the world’s first immersive cinema camera designed for live production with Apple Immersive Video. Featuring dual 8Kx8K RGBW sensors with 16 stops of dynamic range, URSA Cine Immersive 100G uses 100G Ethernet to deliver the bandwidth needed to output live immersive video for the first time.

Also new for the camera is the Blackmagic URSA Live Encoder, a live processor module that compresses live immersive video into Apple ProRes for output as SMPTE-2110-22 IP video, allowing customers to combine the stereo, high frame rate image streams into a single 100G Ethernet connection.

“Live immersive production is here, and it’s extraordinary,” said Grant Petty, Blackmagic Design CEO. “URSA Cine Immersive 100G makes it possible, and the images from this camera are just incredible to watch. URSA Cine Immersive 100G features new sensors designed for incredible quality images at 8K x 8K per eye. Using the same revolutionary RGBW sensor design as URSA Cine, the new dual sensor layout features larger photo-sites, delivering 16 stops of dynamic range. The unique RGBW architecture provides equal amounts of red, green and blue pixels for incredible color super sampling. This means it is optimized to deliver incredibly rich colors and provide the ultimate in image quality and flexibility, even at the high frame rates live immersive video requires, the company said.

The Blackmagic URSA Live Encoder enables the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive 100G to be used for live immersive production. It encodes live video into ProRes for output as SMPTE-2110 IP video via the high-speed 100G Ethernet port, creating an entirely new live immersive viewing experience. Plus, the camera data rate is under 50 Gb/s, so customers can combine two cameras into a single 100G Ethernet connection.

The URSA Cine Immersive 100G was recently used for Spectrum Front Row, a series of live Lakers games in Apple Immersive during the 2025-2026 season, which are now available to watch on demand using the Spectrum SportsNet and NBA apps for Apple Vision Pro.

Blackmagic’s first immersive camera, the URSA Cine Immersive has been used on a number of high-profile immersive productions, including MotoGP: Tour De Force, Debut at the BBC Proms, an upcoming documentary featuring Real Madrid, and NASA’s recent Artemis II launch.

Blackmagic will also debut its Blackmagic URSA Cine 12K LF 100G, with 100G Ethernet for high frame rate SMPTE-2110 live production output up to 440fps. Building on the digital film features of the URSA Cine 12K LF, including the large format RGBW 36x24mm sensor, the new model adds dramatically faster networking for cinematic live production workflows.

The camera will be available Q3 from US$8,995.

Software Updates
DaVinci Resolve 21 will be demo-ed at the Blackmagic booth, updated with a new Photo page,which enables colorists and photographers to use Hollywood’s most advanced color tools for still photos.

Other updates include new AI tools such as IntelliSearch for fast content searching, CineFocus for focal point adjustment, tools for facial refinement, and more. The Krokodove toolset adds over 70 new graphics to Fusion, Fairlight folders simplify audio track management, plus there are improvements to keyframing, MultiMaster trim passes, layer list node graphs and more.

DaVinci Resolve 21 public beta is available for download now from the Blackmagic Design website

Also new is Fairlight Live, a new software-based live audio mixer with spatial audio mixing and SMPTE-2110 broadcast workflows. Fairlight Live easily handles thousands of audio channels, working with standard computer audio or USB audio from ATEM live production switchers. Fully customizable, it has built-in effects and professional features such as a cue player, talkback busses, snapshots and more.

Switchers
Two new additions to Blackmagic’s ATEM live production switchers platform, the ATEM 4 M/E Constellation IP and ATEM 4 M/E Constellation IP Plus are fully SMPTE-2110 native. They retain the features of the existing ATEM Constellation SDI based switchers, so they are familiar to users, allowing a seamless transition between SMPTE-2110 and SDI based switchers in facilities that have both.

Designed for high end broadcast and live production, the new design features front-to-back cooling, extensive redundancy, support for SMPTE-2022-7 on all 100G video ports, redundant PTP clock connections, 2 x 10G Ethernet for control ports and redundant AC power supplies.

The ATEM 4 M/E Constellation IP will be available in June from US$7,995.

Also new is the ATEM Monitoring Rack Panel, a new combination monitoring converter and control panel that can be used with ATEM Constellation IP live production switchers. It converts SMPTE 2110 IP to HDMI and 12G-SDI for connecting to monitors, however it also has front panel input buttons for controlling the switcher as well as an LCD and talkback connections.

Storage, Recording and Cloud
The new HyperDeck ISO Recorder 100G is a new SMPTE 2110 IP video recorder with 100G Ethernet that lets customers record all their cameras for live production. This means customers can also use DaVinci Resolve for live action replay. HyperDeck ISO Recorder 100G uses a single 100G Ethernet connection to connect all 8 video channels, plus it records high-quality Apple ProRes video to network storage via 100G Ethernet.

It will be available in June from US$4,995.

Blackmagic Cloud Store Ultra provides ultra-high performance flash storage with up to 48TB capacity and two independent 100G Ethernet connections that lets customers record and edit simultaneously without either workflow interfering with the other. Available in 24TB and 48TB models, it also features RAID 5 support, dual redundant power supplies and Blackmagic Cloud sync.

It will be available in June from US$8,835.

Conversion and Connectivity
The Blackmagic SDI Expander 8x12G converter lets customers connect all their 12G-SDI gear to the latest 100G Ethernet SMPTE-2110 IP systems. The converter supports 8 bi-directional 12G-SDI connections and has 2 separate 100G Ethernet connections allowing SMPTE-2022-7 redundancy.

The Blackmagic Media Dock Ultra is a new high performance dock for Blackmagic Media Modules with two fully independent 100G Ethernet ports. It also features SDI and HDMI status monitoring and Blackmagic Cloud sync that lets customers use Blackmagic Media Modules as extremely high performance removable storage.

The new Blackmagic StudioBridge 10G PWR lets customers bridge eight separate 10G Ethernet SMPTE-2110 connections into modern 100G SMPTE-2022-7 redundant systems, allowing users to combine up to 8 separate cameras or converters into a 100G Ethernet IP video system. If the 10G Ethernet products use a single connection, then the Blackmagic StudioBridge 10G PWR will also bridge into the 2 x 100G Ethernet connections for a redundant broadcast system. Plus this converter has four separate internal power supplies so it can provide each of the 10G Ethernet connections with 90W PoE++ power.

The Blackmagic UpDownCross 100G standards converter lets customers simultaneously convert up to eight separate channels of SD, HD and Ultra HD video to any other standard. The new converter has redundant 100G Ethernet for full SMPTE 2022-7 compliance and a dedicated NMOS control port.

The Blackmagic Ethernet Switch 820 is a new high performance, low latency model designed for advanced broadcast systems. It includes 8 x 100G and 2 x 10G Ethernet connections plus simple front panel SMPTE-2110 routing. Blackmagic Ethernet Switch 820 also has two redundant PTP clock Ethernet connections, a separate NMOS control port and a dedicated management port.

FREMONT, Calif.—Blackmagic Design has introduced a new family of portable ATEM SDI live production switchers with professional 3G-SDI connections.

Fast and easy to set up, the new ATEM SDI family of portable production switchers is powerful, offering standards converters on all inputs, a built-in Fairlight audio mixer with 6-band parametric EQ compressor and limiter on all inputs, internal DVEs, chromakeyers and professional transitions, the company said.

Priced starting at $345 and available from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide, the new switcher family includes the ATEM SDI and ATEM SDI Pro ISO models with four SDI inputs and the eight-SDI-input ATEM SDI Extreme ISO model. Each offers re-sync on every SDI input, it said.

A USB port works as a webcam to connect video to computers. The Pro and Extreme models feature built-in streaming, the company said. 

The switchers’ all-in-one design includes control panel and connections. The front panel offers easy-to-use buttons to select video sources, video effects and transitions. Source buttons are large so it is possible to use the new switchers by feel, enabling a presenter to do the switching. The new switchers also include buttons for audio mixing, it said.

The ATEM SDI Pro and Extreme models have buttons for recording and streaming control as well as output selection buttons to change video output between program, direct camera feeds and the multiviewer. The rear panel is where SDI sources are connected. Extra microphone inputs are available as are USB for webcam use and multiple SDI aux outputs for program video, it said.

The ATEM SDI Pro and Extreme also support direct recording of streaming output to USB flash disks, making long recordings in the same H.264 video files with AAC audio possible to upload to any online video site. Recording to multiple disks is supported via a USB hub to ensure recording continues even when a disk reaches its maximum storage capacity, it said.

These models also allow users to edit live events because they can record multiple video streams, including clean feeds of all inputs and program at the same time. Video files include metadata tags, such as synced timecode and camera numbers. The ISO models also save a DaVinci Resolve project file, making it possible to open a live production as a video edit, Blackmagic Design said.

“The new ATEM SDI live production switcher is perfect for broadcasters who want advanced, professional features while also looking for extreme portability,” said Blackmagic Design CEO Grant Petty. “There are three great models with 3G-SDI video connections and some really great feature like DVEs for picture-in-picture effects, graphics, transitions, advanced chromakey and Fairlight audio mixer. SAN ANTONIO—Like many other TV stations adjusting to work-from-home workflows brought on by COVID-19, KABB, the Sinclair Broadcast Group-owned Fox affiliate in San Antonio, respected public health recommendations to socially distance and instructed chief meteorologist Alex Garcia to contribute his on-air weather segments and live digital streams from home.

The station’s entire weather team has pivoted to the new workflow with the aid of several Blackmagic Design products, including an ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K live production switcher.

“We were in an unprecedented situation where suddenly we had to be socially distant, while still maintaining weather coverage for our viewers at home without a noticeable drop in quality. Fortunately, I’ve managed to set up a studio in my living room with my Blackmagic Design gear doing much of the heavy lifting,” said Garcia.

Garcia, who does the station’s nightly “Fox News at Nine” weather segments and hosts the weekly online “Hurricane Center LIVE” show, completed his home setup with a Blackmagic Design ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel, Blackmagic Web Presenter and Blackmagic HDMI-to-SDI Micro Converters, a green screen, several computers, microphones and three cameras.

The chief meteorologist interacts with his team from home during the day, preparing what he will talk about during the newscast as well as weather graphics for his segments. When it’s time to go live, Garcia runs a lot of the production himself and livestreams his forecasts in real time to a skeleton crew at the station to be broadcast.

“I utilize the ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K to do the chroma key for the show. Since I’m sending a completely prepared show to the station with the graphics already embedded in my feed, all they have to do is put me on air,” said Garcia.

“During the show, I don’t have the ability to go to the ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K and switch live because I’m on camera, so I rely on the ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel, which I have next to me, to switch and cut scenes, dissolve and preview.

“At the same time, the output of the show is going to my Blackmagic Web Presenter and through to the station for a simultaneous live stream to our social media channels.”

Garcia’s home computer is connected directly to the station’s weather computers, which he uses remotely to create his show. The output of the weather computers is sent back to Garcia as a private stream, converted using a HDMI-to-SDI Micro Converter and fed to the ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K for keying, he said.

“This allows me to see what is being shown behind me on a monitor I’ve set up in my living room,” said Garcia.

The weekly hurricane livestream is produced for broadcast meteorologists, corporate emergency directors and government emergency managers to prepare for hurricane season. It replaces an in-person five-day convention organized by the Storm Science Network Inc., where Garcia serves as president.

“At the physical conference in the past, we used the ATEM Television Studio HD to switch what we were showing on screen, but this year, since we’re bringing everyone in virtually via Skype, Zoom or Google Meet, we use the ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K,” he said. 

“Each participant comes in as a separate input into the ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, and since I have 4 M/Es to work with, I can build them into SuperSource, taking advantage of the picture-in-picture function. Additionally, I’m using a HyperDeck Studio Mini recorder for playback.”

Jukin Media is using a combination of Blackmagic Design gear for its latest entertainment venture, “TBD’s The Link.” TBD is a broadcast network that highlights the best of the internet, and the 13-episode, 30-minute show, hosted by Lorena Abreu, takes viewers on a hilarious viral video clip trip. “TBD’s The Link” airs Saturdays on TBD, and episodes are then uploaded to the network’s website (tbd.com).

LINKING THE PRODUCTION

Production for “TBD’s The Link” took place in one of the smaller studios at Jukin Media’s Los Angeles headquarters. We used one camera connected to a Blackmagic ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K switcher and also had a live audio mixer on stage feeding into the switcher and camera. The switcher’s SuperSource multi-layer engine was used for two different on-screen monitor orientations for vertical and horizontal clips.

We also used the switcher’s ATEM Advanced Chroma Keyers to our advantage when creating both our green screen feed and our key for the line cut and graphics on our virtual set. The ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K allowed us to use numerous high-quality transitions, and with its DVE, we could easily resize, rotate and scale our videos.

An ATEM 1 M/E Broadcast Panel controlled the ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K and allowed us to access the switcher’s macros, giving us full control to record and playback macros at the push of a button.

At the heart of the workflow sat a Smart Videohub 12G 40x40 router, which was fantastic as we had 10 monitors on set for the crew, as well as an additional monitor for when we had a live audience onsite. Connected to the Smart Videohub 12G 40x40, we had one camera source, two inputs per HyperDeck Studio Mini recorders for a total of four inputs and one input for the audio, which allowed us to hear the clips’ audio live on stage. In terms of output, we had four HyperDeck Studio Minis, five program outputs for monitors and one program output for remote monitoring of the live web stream.

Even though we didn’t use them all, we were glad to have the router’s 40 inputs and 40 outputs available. For example, we started with fewer inputs and outputs, but they expanded over time as the project progressed. We also used the Smart Videohub 12G 40x40’s built-in LCD to monitor during the show’s production and for troubleshooting because it allowed us to see the format of the video that was coming through.

The six HyperDeck Studio Minis were used for graphics and video playback, a clean green screen recording, a line cut recording and backup recording. A Teranex Mini Audio to SDI 12G converter was used to get the program mix into an embedded stream to one of the HyperDeck Studio Minis for recording.

Relying on Blackmagic Design for “TBD’s The Link” was a great decision for our team. We were able to control costs and every piece of gear worked seamlessly with each other. We look forward to using Blackmagic Design in our future productions.

FREMONT, Calif.—Rooster Teeth has been putting Blackmagic Design’s URSA Broadcast cameras and ATEM 4 M/e Broadcast Studio 4K live production switcher to use at both is Austin, Texas, and Los Angeles studios for broadcasting across the country.

According to Patrick Salazar, Rooster Teeth’s director of broadcast, the media and entertainment company uses produces up to 10 productions a week using Blackmagic cameras and a control room operated by Blackmagic switchers, media recorders and more.

The Austin-based studio features six URSA Broadcasts, which are fed into a Smart Videohub 40x40 router along with all other sources. Signals are routed to the ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, ATEM 1 M/E Advance Panel, MultiView 16 and SmartScope Duo 4K monitor. There are also four HyperDeck Studio Pro and two HyperDeck Shuttle SSD recorders to record ISO camera feeds, while a separate HyperDeck Studio Pro records the line cut from the ATEM, as well as feeding the livestream.

A similar setup exists in Rooster Teeth’s Los Angeles studio.

When Rooster Teeth produces the Extra Life charity broadcast for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, the Austin studio adds two more URSA Broadcast cameras, a second ATEM, converters and a full network of the camera routing map. A Pocket Cinema Camera 4K was also used for the 2019 broadcast to capture behind the scenes footage.

Fremont, CA – January 31, 2020 – Blackmagic Design today announced that LA based event production company No Static AV (NSAV) used an Ultra HD live production workflow featuring URSA Broadcast cameras and ATEM switchers to deliver in house AV and IMAG for the annual Baby2Baby fundraising gala, which raises millions of dollars for the nonprofit and the children living in poverty that it serves.

Held at the 3Labs event space in Culver City, CA, the Baby2Baby gala brings together celebrities, entrepreneurs and philanthropists, and the evening hosts the top chefs in Los Angeles, an exclusive auction and inspiring program, all while honoring this year’s Giving Tree Award winner, Chrissy Teigen. Past honorees include Amy Adams, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Garner, Kerry Washington, Kate Hudson, Drew Barrymore and Jessica Alba.

With no shortage of AV deliverables, NSAV used its mobile production unit featuring a custom made flypack designed specifically with the Baby2Baby gala in mind. The unit relied on several Blackmagic Design products, including four URSA Broadcasts complete with URSA Studio Viewfinders, four Camera Fiber Converters and four Studio Fiber Converters for fiber connectivity between the cameras and switcher, an ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K and ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel for live switching, and a Smart Videohub 20x20 router to distribute content throughout the venue. NSAV also used an ATEM Camera Control Panel for remote camera control and Teranex AV standards converter for on the fly conversions.

NSAV praised the image quality from the URSA Broadcasts and the ease of use of the live production gear. The URSA Broadcasts were used for IMAG and the content was also recorded in camera in 4K and in 1080 at the mobile production unit. Camera Fiber Converters and Studio Fiber Converters were necessary for fiber communication between the cameras and the switcher, giving the team real time control of all camera aspects, and the ATEM Camera Control Panel allowed NSAV to properly adjust color correction, shading and shutter speed during rehearsals and the live show.

NSAV also provided two 16x9 foot projection screens with 18K lumen laser projectors, two 70 inch LED displays, two 80 inch LED displays, four 90 inch LED displays, and another 18k laser projector shot onto a large wall in the lounge area. This year’s musical act, Paula Abdul, also brought in her own 10 mil video wall, which was used to display auction footage, logos, and to run the artist’s own content as a backdrop to the stage.

“We needed to be able to distribute any content to any screen at any time,” said Adam Beck-Slaten, vice president of production at NSAV. “All of the screens were able to receive content from IMAG, PowerPoint, PlaybackPro, or two internet streams that were tracking donations. We also needed to distribute a script to the teleprompter, while two downstage confidence monitors and an 80 inch display at front of house were showing video from the program, auction and speeches for the presenters to follow along.

The Smart Videohub 20x20 allowed NSAV to expand on the inputs and outputs of the ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K. With this particular event requiring so many inputs and discreet outputs, the team was able to hot key different areas of the event using the router to control nine inputs and 18 outputs seamlessly throughout the show.

“Using Blackmagic Design products meant we were able to make a speedy transition to 4K in a cost effective way, while keeping the level of quality our clients expect,” said Beck-Slaten. “Since we often encounter so many different requests, the Blackmagic Design line allows us to build out what we need to adapt quickly and expeditiously when last minute requests and changes are thrown our way. Fremont, CA - December 3, 2019 - Blackmagic Design today announced that South African music festival, Rocking the Daisies, was powered by an end to end Blackmagic Design workflow, featuring Blackmagic URSA Broadcast and ATEM Constellation 8K.

Held at the Cloof Wine Estate in Cape Town and incorporating comedy, music, art and film, Rocking the Daisies (RTD) is one of the country’s biggest festivals. Live production for the three day event’s diverse international lineup, which included The 1975, Russ, Tash Sultana and Nasty C, was delivered by production company Bad Weather.

The main stage featured three central LED screens, making up one canvas, the middle being a 6 x 6 meter square and each outer screen 3.6 x 6 meter high. There were two 5.4 meter wide by 8.4 meter high IMAGs stage left and right. “With both side screens essentially being portrait, we had to be careful with how we framed our shots, making sure that everything was centered,” reveals live director Simon Wilkes.

“We used the URSA Broadcast for acquisition; front of house we had a single camera with a very long lens and a supplementary Micro Studio Camera 4K locked off just next to the sound desk,” he explains. “In front of the stage we had a jib mounted URSA Broadcast, and another on a dolly. On stage was a roaming camera op and a handful of the micro cameras positioned in key positions for additional cutaways.”

Bad Weather’s Jonathan Bandli adds: “The image quality of these cameras was something that the festival had never experienced before; good in low light and they handled the dynamic range of a large stage with heavy contrast so elegantly. Our solution just completely changed the perception of the festival organizer’s previous experience with live camera systems.”

The production desk was located 60 meters away from the stage. “We had just the one rack, and at the top was a Teranex Express. We recorded the entire festival in 2160p24, but that wasn’t suitable for some of the other screens around the site, so we downscaled to 1080i using the Teranex,” explains Simon.

Relying on the Mini Converter Optical Fiber 12G, each camera channel sent a signal back over multimode fiber to an ATEM Talkback Converter 4K racked in the PPU setup. Converted back to SDI those signals were then patched to an ATEM Constellation 8K switcher and vision mixed using an ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel.

Jonathan says, “One of the main factors in choosing the ATEM Constellation is that we have standards conversions on every single input. Mixed formats and resolutions are so often an issue on live events, especially when handling external sources. Knowing that we can handle anything that comes our way just gives us that peace of mind. With the Constellation sitting at the heart of our workflow it made sense that we invested in the best knowing that it will work hard for many years to come.”

Fremont, CA - October 29, 2019 - Blackmagic Design today announced that Teleclub, Switzerland’s leading Pay TV network, has implemented an UltraHD video playout system, built around a Blackmagic Design 12G infrastructure, to support an increased volume of linear and pay per view (PPV) live sports channels.

The network recently expanded its output to offer more than 83 channels, including eight in Ultra HD, broadcasting in German, French and Italian, and covering a wide range of sports including top flight European and national football leagues, ice hockey and others via its IPTV platform.

“We needed to double Teleclub’s capacity to feed additional HD and UHD PPV channels, studio production facilities, as well as additional commentary and graphics elements,” explains Remo Val, system and software engineer, Teleclub. “When we considered our UltraHD requirements, it was clear that a single link 12G-SDI network would ensure we had enough capacity in our server rooms and keep cabling and signal distribution hubs as streamlined as possible.”

18 ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K have been installed, with each one serving two of the HD or UltraHD channels, with a separate M/E attributed to each channel. Each switcher is paired with a video/CG server, developed inhouse at Teleclub using DeckLink Quad 2 capture cards and Caspar CG, for live video playout. One further ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K delivers playout for an HD multiplex channel.

Remo explains that the system is controlled by a bespoke control dual playlist interface.

“The operator opens an event from our database, and the client generates all the specific content into a playlist, for example live or studio input, lower thirds, sponsor logos. The software controls the ATEM, the CG server and the audio engine to provide whatever the next item is in the playlist, so an operator can deliver an entire live event with one button.”

The facility also includes a new studio and 26 commentary boxes, with 12 Smart Videohub 40x40 12G in place to sub-switch monitors located around the channel’s production headquarters in Volketswil, near Zurich, including VIP lounges and a spectator bar. “There must be more than 250 Blackmagic Micro Converters, as well as Teranex Mini converters, working as the production center’s digital glue,” explains Remo. “It was an important consideration to demonstrate the network’s expansion throughout the production hub itself, so wherever you are in the complex, you can see the scope and scale of Teleclub’s broadcast output.”

Fremont, CA – October 28, 2019 - Blackmagic Design today announced that its ATEM Constellation 8K live production switcher was used as part of an Ultra HD 12G-SDI and fiber live production workflow at WE Fest, the largest country music festival in the United States and the longest running in the world.

Now in its 37 year, the three day festival took place in Detroit Lakes, MN, in August 2019 with performances from stars such as Chris Stapleton, Keith Urban, Brooks and Dunn, LeAnn Rimes and more.

The ATEM Constellation 8K is the heart of a new flypack from Pennsylvania based full service video production company Upstage Video, which also includes Blackmagic Design’s Smart Videohub 12G 40x40 router, ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Panel and more. Built specifically for the concert touring and music festival industry, the Ultra HD 12G-SDI and fiber flypack was responsible for switching and video distribution for WE Fest’s two 17’ x 27’ on stage screens and 12’ x 21’ front of house screen, as well as for closed circuit distribution and simulcasts in the VIP campsites and vendor areas.

“What’s unique about this flypack is that its modular design allows it to break into three racks with the director’s rack sitting front of house,” explained Upstage Video’s Project Manager Greg Brown. “In the U.S., most directors are typically set up backstage, while U.K. directors typically sit front of house so they can see lighting, etc. However, in the U.S., we’ve been seeing a trend where more and more directors prefer front of house because they want to have the energy from the show and the audience, which is hard to get backstage. It was important for us to develop a flypack that could easily provide a front of house director position with engineering backstage.”

The director’s rack houses the ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Panel, SmartView 4K and SmartScope Duo 4K monitors and Teranex Mini SDI to Audio 12G converters, and it’s linked to the CCU rack, which houses the ATEM Constellation 8K, Smart Videohub 12G 40x40 with Videohub Smart Control, Audio Monitor 12G, Mini Converters Optical Fiber 12G and GPI and Tally Interface. The third rack is the engineering rack and has additional Mini Converters Optical Fiber 12G and a media server.

When it came time to design the flypack, Upstage Video needed a switcher that could handle a substantial workflow, but at the right price point. “When we saw the ATEM Constellation 8K, we knew we had to go with it,” said Brown. “The 24 assignable 12G-SDI outputs are huge for us as they help cut back on the amount of routing that we need. We also love the built in Fairlight audio mixer, which was a big help at WE Fest with embedding the analog audio feed from the stage mix into our video feeds for recording, as well as the closed circuit TV feed.”

“Additionally, the ATEM Constellation 8K’s ability to receive any resolution or frame rate and convert it is not only fantastic in its own regard, but also helps keep latency to a minimum,” he added. “Being in live entertainment, having the least amount of latency, ideally less than seven lines of processing delay, is critical, even in the multiviews.”

With four to six acts performing daily across the three day festival, coupled with each act having different video needs and setups, preparedness and peace of mind were key. Brown explained, “We do our best to connect with acts weeks before an event, but with folks on their own tours this can be difficult to accomplish. At WE Fest, the ability to have an act’s video director walk in the morning of their show and quickly fulfill their needs helped the director relax and concentrate on switching the show. In this vein, the ATEM Constellation 8K’s ability to receive different resolutions and frame rates and convert them with no outboard gear is ideal. Similarly, with 40 12G-SDI inputs, we were able to patch in every act’s needs in the morning, which eliminated the need to hard patch cables in between acts.”

Another deciding factor was the switcher’s flexibility between HD, Ultra HD and 8K capabilities. “To have 8K service, even if we don't use it just yet, coupled with the fact that in Ultra HD it’s a completely maxed out switcher, all at that price point, made the ATEM Constellation 8K a no brainer,” concluded Brown.

ATEM Mini will be available in November 2019 from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide for US$295.

The ATEM Mini will be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design IBC 2019 booth 7.B45.

The new ATEM Mini makes it easy to create professional multi camera productions for live streaming to YouTube or innovative business presentations using Skype. Simply connect ATEM Mini and customers can switch live between 4 high quality video camera inputs in dramatically better quality images. Customers can even connect to a computer to present PowerPoint slides or add a gaming console. The built in DVE allows exciting picture in picture effects, perfect for live commentary. There's loads of video effects too. To live stream, ATEM Mini has a USB output that works like a webcam, so customers can connect to any video software. There's also HDMI video out for projectors. Microphone inputs allow high quality desktop and lapel mics for interviews and presentations.

ATEM Mini features a compact control panel based design with all video, audio and control connections on the rear panel. The front panel includes easy to use buttons for selecting sources, adjusting audio inputs, as well as selecting video effects and transitions. The rear panel includes HDMI inputs for connecting cameras or computers, plus additional microphone inputs. The ATEM Mini program is output via an HDMI video out as well as a USB for webcam output. Customers can select from exciting transitions such as a commonly used dissolve, or more dramatic effects such as dip to color, DVE squeeze and DVE push. The DVE is perfect for picture in picture effects and customers can instantly set up different picture positions from the buttons on the control panel. There is even a still store for titles and graphics accessible via external software control.

With 4 independent HDMI inputs, customers can connect up to 4 high quality consumer video cameras. All connected sources will re-sync to the switcher if they operate at different video standards, which means all inputs just work and customers can handle unknown equipment if customers are visiting new venues or locations. Imagine using the low light capability of professional cameras for theater production and music videos.

To ensure the maximum compatibility possible, ATEM Mini features a USB connection that operates as a simple webcam source. That means customers can plug in and instantly get working with any video software. The software is tricked into thinking the ATEM Mini is a common webcam, but it's really a live production switcher. That guarantees full compatibility with all software in full resolution 1080HD quality. Choose any software customers like, such as Open Broadcaster for live streaming, or Skype for point to point presentations. ATEM Mini works with software and platforms such as Open Broadcaster, XSplit Broadcaster, YouTube Live, Facebook Live, Skype, Twitch TV, Periscope, Livestream, Wirecast and more.

The HDMI program output is perfect for connecting ATEM Mini into an external recorder or monitor. ATEM Mini supports recorders such as the HyperDeck Studio Mini and Blackmagic Video Assist. With two independent 3.5mm stereo audio inputs, customers can connect desktop and lapel microphones. With 2 extra stereo audio inputs, customers can ensure a host and guest both have lapel microphones when doing interviews. All audio inputs to ATEM Mini include buttons on the panel for adjusting audio level and enabling inputs into the audio mixer.

The ATEM Software Control app unlocks the hidden power of the ATEM Mini as customers get total control over the switcher features, plus the software is included free for Mac and Windows. ATEM Software Control features a visual switcher user interface with parameter palettes for making quick adjustments. Although customers can normally connect via USB, if customers connect using Ethernet it's possible for multiple users to connect to ATEM Mini using separate copies of ATEM Software Control on different computers. Customers can even save the switcher state as XML files. If customers need clip playback, customers can even control HyperDeck disk recorders via Ethernet.

The built in "media pool" allows loading of up to 20 separate broadcast quality RGBA graphics for titles, opening plates and logos. Customers can even use still frames for complex effects such as graphic wipes. ATEM Mini can even grab stills from the video output and add them to the internal media pool. Customers can easily manage the still store graphic using the included ATEM Software Control app, or customers can download directly from Photoshop software using the ATEM Photoshop plug-in. The Photoshop Plug-in is perfect for graphics that need to change often, such as scoreboards, as customers can update the text and download directly into the switcher, allowing graphics to get on-air fast.

For news or on-set presentation work, ATEM Mini is the perfect choice as it features an ATEM Advanced Chroma Key for high quality chroma or luminance keying, plus an additional downstream linear keyer. Customers can even use it for title overlays simply by using PowerPoint or other software with a green or blue background and the keyer will knock out the green and make the background transparent.

With a built in Fairlight audio mixer, the ATEM Mini makes it possible to do extremely complex live sound mixing. The internal mixer features a total of 12 channels so customers get the ability to mix audio from all sources. 8 mixer channels are de-embedded from the HDMI inputs, while an extra two stereo audio channels are input via the 3.5mm microphone connections on the rear panel. Each input channel features the highest quality 6 band parametric EQ and compressor, limiter, expander and noise gate as well as full panning.

The HDMI output is a true "aux" output so customers can clean switch each of the 4 HDMI inputs or the program feed to this output. Customers can even "direct" switch input 1 to the HDMI output for low latency for eSport. If customers select broadcast style mix effects switching, customers can also output a preview feed, allowing verification of the source before transitioning to it.

Fremont, CA - February 26, 2019 - Blackmagic Design today announced that Grupo La República, a leading media organization in Lima, Perú, has incorporated a full Blackmagic Design workflow including URSA Broadcast cameras, ATEM Television Studio HD live production switchers, Blackmagic Studio Cameras and more. The investment is part of a company wide digital transformation and laid the foundation for RTV, Grupo La República’s new digital television channel.

Founded in 1981, Grupo La República is the second largest print and digital media organization in Perú, owning several print news publications including La República, El Popular and Libero. Recently, Grupo La República embarked on a digital upgrade by adapting all of its print content for its new digital platforms, including live news and sports programming via RTV.

“This digital transformation is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time, but to be successful we knew we needed to have the proper equipment,” said Alfieri Noce, chief technical officer of R&D at Grupo La República. “I’ve used Blackmagic Design gear in the past, so when we were ready to move forward, I advised on what we needed to make this happen.”

He continued, “The reason for implementing Blackmagic Design was very clear from the beginning. We needed budget friendly gear that also delivered the superior quality that Grupo La República is known for.”

Grupo La República started by incorporating three URSA Broadcast cameras to shoot several shows, including the political morning show “Sin Guión con Rosa María Palacios,” the sports show “Libero” and the pop culture entertainment show “Populovers.”

“A main factor for us in selecting the URSA Broadcast was the capability to use the lenses we already had, including older, after market HD lenses. With the URSA Broadcast, we were spared from having to repurchase an entire stock of lenses, which helped keep us on budget,” said Noce.

Additionally, Grupo La República has four Blackmagic Studio Cameras. “The Blackmagic Studio Cameras are extremely reliable and complement the URSA Broadcast cameras we have in studio,” continued Noce. “Some features that make the Blackmagic Studio Camera perfect for our productions is the 10” viewfinder, remote camera controls, the different input connections and how user friendly and intuitive they are.”

Grupo La República also implemented two ATEM Television Studio HD live production switchers which allow them to easily switch between cameras while shooting their RTV programming.

Fremont, CA - February 18, 2019 - Blackmagic Design today announced that Dubai based satellite channel, Citruss World of Shopping, has implemented a 4K production and live broadcast solution featuring the URSA Broadcast with ATEM Camera Control Panel, and ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K switcher.

To support continued growth and increase production capabilities, Citruss has relocated to larger facilities in Dubai Studio City. The 4K ready broadcast gallery, and two new studios, were built around a 12G-SDI network infrastructure with the help of systems integrator United Broadcast & Media (UBMS).

With daily spots on Nilesat, Arabsat and MBC4, Citruss typically films between eight and nine different product segments on any given day with the two studio spaces in constant rotation, and has now acquired eight URSA Broadcasts with Blackmagic Studio Viewfinders.

“As a shopping channel it is vital that our merchandise is accurately represented on screen whether that is ensuring colors are true to life, or our ability to demonstrate a product’s USPs,” begins Citruss’ head of television operations and production, Amr Moustafa. “After discussion with UBMS the URSA Broadcast was the obvious choice. We’ve been especially impressed with how user friendly the cameras are, and the level of detail we’re getting, balanced with the competitive price point.”

“We have five in Studio A and three more in Studio B, and we can easily transition between a variety of different setups whether that is to lock them off on a pedestal, shoulder mount or to use on a crane when demonstrating kitchen products for example.”

Signal management throughout the facility relies on a Smart Videohub 12G 40x40 while the broadcast gallery is based on the ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast 4K switcher for vision mixing. An ATEM Camera Control Panel provides hardware based remote camera control for shading.

“At Citruss we offer a unique, multichannel approach to selling,” explains Moustafa. “Our viewers have the option to simply send a screen grab via WhatsApp to make a purchase, buy using our app, or they can phone in. We need to clearly convey all of that information together with pricing and product details in overlays during each segment, and the switcher’s DVE, lower thirds and onscreen graphics display make it very simple to do.

Fremont, CA — November 21, 2018 - Blackmagic Design today announced that Red Bull Japan is using ATEM Production Studio 4K live production switcher and ATEM 1 M/E Broadcast Panel hardware control panel for the broadcasting of eSports at the Red Bull Gaming Sphere Tokyo event space. To provide the live streaming of games, Red Bull is also using a workflow built around other Blackmagic Design products, including Micro Studio Camera 4K, Studio Camera 4K, Video Assist 4K and HyperDeck Studio12G.

Through the space, which has held more than a 100 events since opening, Red Bull offers a place where gamers can fight face to face. The Red Bull Gaming Sphere Tokyo is Red Bull's first gaming space in Asia and includes community space for players, developers and publishers to build gaming scenes, with gamers gathering together for tournaments and other events.

Tokyo’s Groovesync, inc. was entrusted with the management and installation of the equipment of Red Bull Gaming Sphere Tokyo. Groovesync, inc. has been working in the Japanese game scene with Red Bull since 2012, and created the Red Bull Gaming Sphere Tokyo project not only for holding regular events and tournaments, but also to support the players on the daily basis.

To capture game play, three Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K are used to shoot commentator and players 1 and 2. Feeds from these cameras and images of game screens are sent to the ATEM Production Studio 4K for live switching. The final output switched by the ATEM Production Studio 4K is then distributed live and recorded by HyperDeck Studio 12G. Video of the game itself is sent before switching from the game machine to a Blackmagic Design Video Assist 4 K for recording and monitoring of the game screen.

Five Micro Studio Camera 4Ks are installed on the ceiling to capture the entire set of play and sent to a large monitor for live audience viewing at the event hall.

Fremont, CA - November 15, 2018 - Blackmagic Design today announced that its ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K live production switcher and ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel were used as part of the immersive live streaming workflow at the recent Oculus Connect 5, Oculus’ annual virtual reality developer conference.

Headed by Supersphere, an L.A. based immersive content and technology company, the 4K and 12G-SDI virtual reality (VR) workflow also relied on a number of additional Blackmagic Design products, including six Teranex AV standards converters, a Smart Videohub 12G 40x40 router, six HyperDeck Studio 12G broadcast recorders, five DeckLink 4K Pro capture and playback cards and several Teranex Mini Quad SDI to 12G-SDI converters.

“We have been working with Facebook and Oculus for a while as an immersive streaming provider,” said Jason Diamond, partner and technical creative director, Supersphere. “For Oculus Connect 5, there were some unusual requests. We needed to not only stream the all important keynotes for several hours each day, but we also had to stream more than 10 hours of esports tournament finals into Oculus Venues. We have expertise in immersive esports streaming, and used several tools, including the Blackmagic Design suite, to build custom environments in headset to give a richer esports experience for fans all over the world.”

Available inside the Oculus Go and GearVR headsets, the Oculus Venues platform allows users to attend live events in VR with all the sounds, lights and energy of really being there.

“Our technical workflow was a little different for each style of input. For some sources, especially those coming from graphics cards on the gaming computers, we would use a Teranex AV to upconvert from 1920 x 1080 to Ultra HD for inclusion in the overall 4K environment,” explained Diamond. “All sources would eventually feed into the ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K at the heart of our system. We used the ATEMs as the control center and as the primary switching environment for any immersive broadcast. We also routed ISOs and the line cut to the HyperDeck Studio 12Gs for recording.”

“For Oculus Connect 5, we pretty much used every feature the ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K had in its bag of tricks; advanced chroma keying, Ultra HD multi viewers and built in SuperSource were all core to our workflow. Additionally, esports by nature has a ton of sources, so the ATEM’s 20 inputs came in handy, and we were maxed out on our console at times,” he added. “Meanwhile, the Teranex AV is just an industry workhorse. It’s famous for ‘anything in/anything out,’ and it’s our Swiss Army knife for formats and conversions.”

The majority of the Blackmagic Design gear is housed in two flypacks purposefully designed for live VR, 360º, 180º and 4K streaming and built on a 12G-SDI infrastructure from the ground up. The flypacks are used on a weekly basis, traveling all over the world for events and shows.

“Our overall philosophy when building our racks is to merge new technology with proven technology and workflows. Multi cam, multi geometry immersive streaming is hard. The trick is to blend the new, sometimes very unusual tools with the stock and trade of broadcast,” said Diamond. “By doing that, we are able to hire talented, experienced broadcast professionals and leverage their decades of experience in producing great shows while bringing in enough new technology to allow the immersive elements to shine.”

Fremont, CA - November 13, 2018 - Blackmagic Design today announced that South Africa based Homebrew Films has completed an Ultra HD 4K facilities upgrade that relies on broadcast infrastructure products from Blackmagic Design, including the URSA Broadcast and ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K.

Based at Atlantic Studios in Cape Town, Homebrew Films delivers a huge variety of programming, from wildlife documentaries to soap operas and lifestyle magazine shows, including ‘Tussen Ons’, an Afrikaans version of ‘The View’ talk show, and local current affairs show ‘Kwela’.

Homebrew’s technical studio director, Chris Gardner, needed a studio system that could be assembled and configured quickly, and provide Homebrew a technical advantage over the market.

“Although South African broadcasters are not yet accepting Ultra HD, it made sense to get ahead of the curve, so that we can meet their content needs now and in the future,” Chris says. “And the beauty of embracing 4K now meant that we could facilitate high quality live streaming and event video, allowing us to diversify our production portfolio.”

For live studio acquisition, Homebrew has implemented six URSA Broadcast equipped with Blackmagic Studio Viewfinders and Canon KJ20 x 8.2 BIRSE HD b4 optics. Two ATEM Camera Control Panels complete the chain and are used alongside the SmartView 4K and SmartScope Duo to rack and match the incoming feeds.

For talkback and tally, the workflow relies on the ATEM Talkback Converter 4K, which provides program return, comms and control back to all of the camera positions via 3G SDI.

“The balance of flexibility and great image quality from the URSA Broadcast chains works perfectly for the varied portfolio of work we undertake,” explains Chris. “Working as extensively as we do with light, bright color palettes, both skin tone reproduction, and color accuracy was essential, especially during a live broadcast.”

12G-SDI cable runs carry video with embedded audio from the studio floor to a Smart Videohub 40x40 in the broadcast gallery where each ISO camera feed is recorded to SSD using dedicated HyperDeck Studio 12G. The broadcast decks are also used for VT playback.

All of this is fees into the central production desk where an ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K with ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel is used to produce the live program mix.

Transitioning between traditional broadcast and live streaming workflows couldn’t be simpler thanks to Blackmagic Design. “Simply take a program feed from the ATEM via an AUX out through the Blackmagic Web Presenter in a computer and then stream using OBS.”

“We’ve been incredibly impressed, not only by this flexibility but also the ease of design and installation,” concludes Chris. “To put it in perspective, it took two of us just four weeks to design, wire, install and deploy the system, and that includes building custom elements and racks.”

Fremont, CA – October 29, 2018 - Blackmagic Design today announced that New York City based production company Live X used a full Blackmagic Design workflow, including URSA Broadcast, ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K and Micro Studio Camera 4K, to create and live stream this summer’s “Live on the Lanes” game show series for the world’s largest ten pin bowling center operator, Bowlero Corporation.

As a full service design, production and broadcast company, Live X worked with its client So They Went Productions to create the series for Bowlero Corporation's Bowlero brand. With more than 300 bowling centers around the country, operating under four bowling brands, Bowlero Corp provides fun for all ages, including immersive and interactive entertainment like blacklight bowling, arcades, laser tag and over the top culinary creations.

To appeal to today’s younger generation, Live X produced a five episode game show, “Live on the Lanes,” streamed directly to Facebook Live. Sarah Pribis, one of the hosts of the popular trivia game “HQ” served as the host of “Live on the Lanes.” Each episode had more than 500,000 viewers, and in addition to producing the series, Live X engaged viewers at home by having them participate in the game show to win cash prizes.

Lead producer and cofounder at Live X, Corey Behnke, knew it would be a unique challenge to shoot this series, as the team wanted to get as close to the two lanes of action as possible and also needed to maintain a small overall footprint. Corey decided to use five Micro Studio Camera 4Ks, two of which were positioned to shoot the lanes and two on the pins, so they could capture each strike, gutter ball and everything in between. One Micro Studio Camera 4K captured the group of players as they watched the action and waited for their turn.

He also incorporated three URSA Broadcast cameras, two of which served as handheld main action cameras, with the third on a tripod capturing the host, equipped with a teleprompter and an URSA Viewfinder. “We loved using the URSA Broadcast in a way that it was meant to be used,” said Corey. “For a live event like a game show broadcast on Facebook Live, the combination of the URSA Broadcast and the ATEM was perfect. Once you have control set up, you can manage everything from the front bench which is critical in a live situation.”

Live X used an ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, controlled using ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel, with built in DaVinci Resolve style color wheels to simultaneously color correct and control all of the cameras in real time. They also used the Live X custom graphics engine which was keyfilled into the switcher. “It was so helpful to be able to use the ATEM that way. That allowed us to show the scoreboard, the lower third and the bowling animations. The ability to do key fill with the ATEM was game changing.”

“Because of the ATEM, we have tally on the URSA Broadcasts, which is very helpful,” said Corey. “And because of the 2/3 inch sensor size when using 4K B4 mount on the URSA Broadcasts, it was easily to outfit them with lenses, whether we already had them or rented them. 2/3 is pretty ubiquitous in the industry, so that’s really helpful.”

Nine HyperDeck Studio Pros were used to record the feeds from each camera as well as the overall program output. Live X also sent a program feed out of the ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K through two Teranex Mini SDI Distribution 12G units, which allowed them to send the feed to each of the eight cameras, giving them CCU control. Corey also used two SmartView 4K monitors to monitor the program feed out of the ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K.

He continued, “These products are made for live. It’s easy to match the cameras, and everything works together without additional control panel combinations. Another big reason we’ve chosen Blackmagic Design is to future proof for 12G-SDI. The internet is higher resolution than television, and our clients want 1080p30, which is how we shot ‘Live on the Lanes.’ Our clients don’t necessarily need 4K yet, but they will, and it’s great that we’re ready.”

Fremont, CA — October 16, 2018 - Blackmagic Design announced today ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, Teranex Mini and its Mini Converters were used as part of massive indoor spatial projection system by Epson Sales Japan Corp.

Based around a 4K and 12G workflow and including 29 Epson projectors, the 360° Space Performance system is based inside the JR Shinjuku Miraina Tower and will be able to be viewed by the huge number of visitors to the tower in every elevator and the general showroom.

Epson Sales Japan Corp. is the Japanese sales division of Seiko Epson, and includes a media department that is charged with giving customers surprises and building excitement for Epson products through live and online imagery.

The new system is designed to show the growth for projection mapping with projectors across many of Seiko Epson’s markets. The department created, using Blackmagic Design equipment, a project that would let customers experience a new spatial design with the latest technologies by installing them in the elevator hall and showroom which many customers visiting the company pass by every day. Original characters expressing “Global EPSON” from around the world are projected using 29 EPSON projectors.

The video workflow for the system includes 19 units of Teranex Mini SDI to HDMI 12G and 29 Micro Converter SDI to HDMIs. 4K HDMI output by digital signage players are converted by Teranex Mini HDMI to SDI 12G into 12G-SDI and ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K then combines four layers of video signals using its chroma keying tool. The output from ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K is then converted into four streams of 3G-SDI by Teranex Mini 12G-SDI to Quad SDI, which are then converted later into HDMI by Teranex Mini SDI to HDMI 12G. The output signal is then converted into ethernet and sent to each projector.

“We intended to use chroma keying to combine video signals in our system and found ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, which supports chroma keying in 4K. The price as well as the features of ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K were perfect for this project. It had all the features we needed, including four layers of 4K chroma keying against one layer of background and an ability to change keying color in whatever way you need. Having many layers in projection mapping results in more reality and dimension. ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K was the best product for the system we wanted,” said Hiroaki Kanisawa, general manager.

He continued: “The resolution can be low when you are projecting material on a tall building outdoors, but the resolution must be higher when you have projection mapping in small spaces like our elevator hall and show room. We focused on the picture quality and color representation of the material so that customers can watch it within the distance of a few inches.”

Fremont, CA - October 15, 2018 - Blackmagic Design today announced that Red Bull’s Gaming Sphere in London has been built on a live production workflow incorporating the URSA Mini Pro, Micro Studio Camera 4K, ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K and DeckLink 8K Pro.

The multipurpose esports studio has been created to hone the skills of players and those working behind the scenes at all levels to host tournaments, educational events and workshops. Systems integrator Dreamtek has designed and implemented the ultra flexible, low latency live production workflow to deliver high quality gaming content for big screens or streamed live to Twitch, YouTube or Facebook.

“Our principal consideration was the ability to record gameplay from anywhere in the space, and deliver that at the high frame rates that gaming fans expect, anything less just wouldn’t be acceptable. We conceived an IP and SDI infrastructure from which any camera, PC or console could be captured, recorded and played out,” explains Kashaan Butt, Dreamtek’s chief engineer.

The Smart Videohub at the heart of this network not only handles gameplay output, but also live camera feeds from a series of URSA Mini Pro, Micro Studio Camera 4K and 12 mini ‘gamer-cam’ units to capture players’ emotions and reactions. DeckLink 8K Pro capture cards allow high resolution playback over 12G-SDI. Handling gameplay at high frame rates is frankly essential in esports production,” continued Kashaan. “The Decklink 8K gives us the flexibility and the production values we need, no matter how many consoles we’re handling during an event.”

Multiple capture methods are used throughout the system, including SSD recording from the URSA Mini Pro cameras, multichannel H.264 encoders feeding into a streaming server and a series of HyperDeck Studio Mini for 4K recording. “Support for H.264 was a particularly important element in simplifying the workflow,” explains Kashaan. “Competitive games can last for several hours and we previously had to transcode to reduce the data capacity requirement on our storage.”

Multiple program mixes are produced with an ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, which gives Red Bull the capacity to cover several events running in different areas of the Sphere simultaneously. “As well as the four M/E busses, the ATEM’s chroma key controls are crucial, as we’ve included a studio space with bluescreen, where expert commentators and presenters can be overlayed onto the gameplay feed,” explains Kashaan.

“Red Bull has an international reputation for cutting edge content and this had to be retained as it progressed into the esports market,” he concludes. “We knew from the outset that a Blackmagic Design workflow would deliver the production values required, as we can rely on the equipment to do what it needs to, whether it’s acquisition, distribution, control or capture. Singapore – September 13, 2018 - Blackmagic Design today announced that Open Cyber University of Korea has upgraded their web focused production suites with Blackmagic Design’s ATEM 2M/E Production Studio 4Ks and ATEM 1M/E Broadcast Panels. The upgrade was done to provide an easy to use and reliable production suite for the University’s teaching faculty to record and stream lessons on a day to day basis.

Open Cyber University of Korea is the largest academic exchange center in the country, holding at least 400 lectures every year to 120,000 students and delivering lessons through their website has been key to their success. To grow the production of these online lectures, the Open Cyber University of Korea has built a new HD production studio and media center around Blackmagic Design’s ATEM switchers, as well as Blackmagic Design Smart Videohub 12x12 CleanSwitch, HyperDeck Studios and Video Assists.

The new media center consists of five studios with control rooms, an advanced multimedia system that includes a high quality digital video production and network based video creation system. “The content is available to enrolled students via online streaming, so the main criteria for choosing the equipment was that it must be reliable for heavy use, yet simple for operations. The project was aimed at building HD studios for creating various e-learning content using chroma keying, electronic whiteboard, etc” said Mr. Lim, Jong Hoon, Team Head (Content Development Team), Open Cyber University of Korea.

Fremont, Ca - September 7, 2018 - Blackmagic Design today announced that all video production for Denmark’s Grøn Festival, including IMAG projection, is handled by an end to end Blackmagic Design live solution, comprising URSA Broadcast, ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K and Smart Videohub 12G.

Grøn Festival takes place across consecutive dates at eight different locations around Denmark, with the same crew and artists delivering the entire festival schedule. Live events specialist, Deadlight Lydiksen, takes responsibility for live production, handling all aspects of video from a purpose built 12G-SDI outside broadcast (OB) van.

“Grøn is an amazing festival with a concept that really shouldn’t be possible. Everything is built, conducted and packed back up each day, at venues with up to 35,000 spectators. Working from the van makes it easy for us to get in and out quickly each day,” explains Casper Warnich of Deadlight. The team manages video feeds from two stages out to LED backdrops and trailer mounted LED big screens, with a Smart Videohub 12G routing all incoming and outgoing signals.

Deadlight Lydiksen also manages video content for all the festival’s acts. “This is where the ATEM 4 M/E switcher comes into its own,” explains Casper. “One of the bands has multiple cameras filming its four members, and these feeds are all mixed with ATEM’s SuperSource feature, so each screen has each of the band members in perfect sync. For another act, we’re working with live camera feeds and the band’s own media server. This level of content production just wouldn’t be possible for us without a multi source, multi effect switcher that also offers the low latency needed for live video.”

For acquisition, three URSA Broadcast units equipped with Blackmagic Camera Fiber Converters are paired with two Canon 40x zoom lenses and a Canon 22x ENG lenses. Two units are positioned front of house and one acts as a pit camera. “Our ability to sync the URSA Broadcast via SDI is very useful, and makes it possible to achieve very low latency without having to deal with sync generators and additional cabling.”

With the festival covering 650 miles over the eight days, Grøn’s schedule is tough, however the solution is robust enough for Casper and his eight person production team to have complete confidence regardless of the venue. ”Blackmagic’s move towards broadcast SMPTE fiber simplifies our approach by removing unnecessary weight and cost. It also gives us talkback, tally and power through that one cable,” concludes Casper. “Simplicity paired with flexibility helps us hugely when we are on the road.”

Fremont, Ca - August 30, 2018 - Blackmagic Design today announced that its URSA Broadcast with ATEM Camera Control Panel has been used as part of a live ATEM workflow on the Grandslam tour, bringing Simple Minds and the Pretenders to 14 major venues throughout the UK.

Event specialist, LHG Live, has produced and promoted the entire tour for the two globally renowned bands, and is utilizing a live solution that relies on Blackmagic Design for acquisition and IMAG relay which it developed with support from reseller CVP.

Three URSA Broadcast cameras, equipped with Blackmagic Camera Fiber Converters and a range of Canon B4 lenses are front of house; one as wide angle and two pit units to capture the headline acts. The B4 mount allows the event specialist to use existing lenses and provides more flexibility when hiring in lenses.

“The depth of color and image quality are fantastic not to mention the many other benefits of the Blackmagic URSA Broadcast with tally, talkback and camera control all available via both the new camera control hardware and ATEM software,” comments Jacques Batchelor, LHG Live.

Adding: “The portability and durable design were also a huge consideration for us as we use these cameras on stage, on and off tripods. Therefore we wanted to make sure we had a flexible and compact solution that allows our operators to be creative.”

The ATEM Camera Control hardware has been designed with both function and ease of use in mind, according to Batchelor. “It makes color correction and iris control a dream, and has turned the URSA Broadcast into a feature packed live solution with an easy to use and recognizable workflow.”

Routing for the flyaway kit is delivered through a Smart Videohub 20x20, with an ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K switcher handling all the camera feeds, together with prerecorded adverts and VTs between sets, and the live mix is cut on an ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel. The unit also features a pair of Teranex AV standards converters, which means the production team can provide live feeds in the right format regardless of the display tech at a venue or if an artist wants to incorporate an additional source at short notice.

The show is also being broadcast live using ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K live production switchers, ATEM Camera Control Panel, Blackmagic Camera Fiber Converter, Blackmagic Studio Fiber Converter and a number of Teranex AV converters.

“Anderson Cooper Full Circle” was launched on July 16, 2018 and airs every weekday on CNN’s Facebook page. Engaging directly with the audience, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, along with a roster of CNN talent reporting from around the world, deliver insight into the daily news stories that Facebook audiences care about most, leveraging the interactivity of the platform to inform each evening’s lineup and engage a new generation of consumers.

The show, which is separate but complementary to Anderson Cooper’s popular “AC360,” is exclusive to the Facebook Watch platform and is broadcast live from CNN’s AC360 New York City newsroom in mobile friendly vertical video.

Distinguishing itself and its content by producing a high-quality broadcast before being sent downstream to Facebook Watch, “Anderson Cooper Full Circle” offers broadcast quality live streaming. To do this, CNN chose a broadcast workflow based around four Blackmagic Design URSA Mini Pro cameras, five ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4Ks and eight Teranex AV converters and processors.

Including live interviews, four URSA Mini Pros are used to capture various shots of Anderson Cooper and his guests, as well as the newsroom studio itself. Media from the cameras are sent via optical fiber to four ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K switchers and four Teranex AVs for conversions and audio embedding.

An additional ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K for SDI signal control and distribution amplification is also in line. The merged feeds are then forwarded through two Teranex AVs and streaming hardware to Facebook Live. ATEM Camera Control Panel is used to control all four cameras, with the show’s workflow connected with optical fiber using the Blackmagic Camera Fiber Converter and Blackmagic Studio Fiber Converter to convert video, audio, power, talkback and tally with a single SMPTE fiber optic cable.

The show is designed to be viewed from mobile devices as well as laptops and computers. To handle this, CNN uses the ATEM switcher’s Power Macro feature to automate feeds from the cameras to be rotated from horizontal to vertical to be better viewed on a phone.

Fremont, CA - June 29, 2018 - Blackmagic Design today announced that the Association of Paddlesurf Professionals (APP) World Tour uses a full Blackmagic Design workflow, including the URSA Mini 4K digital film camera, Micro Studio Camera 4K live studio camera, and ATEM Production Studio 4K switcher for the broadcast, live production, streaming and video production of international surfing events.

Created by the Waterman League, the APP World Tour is the official professional world championship tour for the fast growing sport of paddlesurfing, also known as stand up paddling (SUP), including both the surfing and racing divisions. The APP World Tour produces a complete inventory of programming, including live and post produced broadcasts from all of its events across the globe, with distribution to more than 100 countries worldwide via premier global networks such as CBS Sports and Fox Sports Australia. Delivering live broadcast action, highlight content, athlete specials and post produced shows, the tour’s 2018 events will be held in London, New York, San Francisco, Paris and the Canary Islands.

According to CEO Tristan Boxford, the Waterman League is a production company that founded and operates the APP World Tour, working with partners across the world, including government agencies and television networks, to make sure the league delivers high quality events on a global scale.

“We’ve produced events and live productions everywhere from the beautiful beaches of Hawaii to the city of Tokyo to Germany to Patagonia in the glacier area of Chile to Fiji and beyond,” said Tristan. “We have a very dynamic environment. We need products that can hit the ground running, so we can create a production setup very quickly and easily. Sometimes we don’t even have production trucks and other various elements that make things easier from a production standpoint.”

In each live broadcast event, the Micro Studio Camera 4K captures two hosts in the broadcast booth, two URSA Mini 4K cameras are set up to capture the main action angles, and another URSA Mini 4K acts as a roving ENG camera. All of the camera feeds run via SDI through Blackmagic Micro Converters SDI-HDMI, and the loop through SDI signal is then fed into the ATEM Production Studio 4K, while the HDMI out signal is fed into a replay machine, sending one replay feed back into the ATEM. The Micro Studio Camera 4K runs SDI in and out, giving the team control over that camera from the ATEM Production Studio 4K. The team also has a graphics station that runs live graphics on an HDMI input, while all of the audio gets mastered via a MIDI board running in conjunction with the ATEM and its software.

The Waterman League also runs two full time television series that follow both the surfing and racing tours and their competitions, as well as special projects and lifestyle content the company creates to support the tours, including segments on the athletes, locations, lifestyle and other elements of the sport. Since 2012, the tour has been broadcasting all of its events live on the web. After using Blackmagic Mini Converters for many years, they began using ATEM switchers to support their live broadcasts.

“The ATEMs were very intuitive and easy to use, and gave us the high quality we needed,” said Tristan. “They are amazing for our needs. From there, we saw the value of the cameras and the level of production quality, and began gearing toward that. Now all of our cameras are Blackmagic Design. We use the ATEM switchers for live production, the studio cameras for live studio setups, and the URSA Mini 4K for the high speed action of all the water sports.”

The Waterman League’s Director of Media, Christian Henning, directs each webcast and runs the ATEM Production Studio 4K software control on his computer, in addition to the main switching computer which has built-in macros to run the ATEM. Each member of the technical team has a computer on the network with a copy of ATEM software running, both as a backup for the main computer and so that at anytime anyone can be called on to check audio, load a graphic or assist in an emergency with switching.

The team runs a program feed out to the beach via SDI and to the announcers in the booth while a replay machine creates the line cut from the day’s broadcast. The SDI signal is also split to an editor who cuts live packages throughout the day and assembles the highlight video for release as soon as the day’s event is done. The team also sends a master feed out to an encoder and to RTMP locations to put it out to the world.

According to Christian, “Since the start of our live broadcasts we have been using ATEM production switchers. The software interface has made it a breeze to connect a number of operators, from our audio control to our technical director and graphics operator. We have been able to grow our productions using Blackmagic Design products from just a two camera setup covering a day long SUP surfing event to a full fledged live broadcast entity, creating a television show from each of our events around the world while also providing our global fanbase with the live competition experience.”

“Being a SUP surfing and racing World Tour means we only film and operate in the worst conditions you can put electronics into, with salty sea air, wind, rain, and waves battering our gear no matter how tightly we cover things up and protect them,” said Christian. “We have had to pull off live broadcasts on deserted islands, on beaches during the worst storm in Europe in 50 years, as well as in deserts where the soaring temperatures melted battery packs. The products will be used to help capture 4K footage of NOW Church’s high energy worship and concert like productions, as well as interviews, video announcements, and music segments viewed by its global audience.

Best known for its creativity and stewardship, NOW Church is a fast growing multicultural Christian church located in Ocala, Florida. With its active local congregation and international reach, the church’s weekly Sunday sermons and other events are aired via local Florida broadcasters, as well as online through its broadcast quality online campus that’s viewed in more than 125 countries.

Ricky Perinchief of Proton Global Media Group installed the URSA Broadcast, ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel, and ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K at NOW Church and helped integrate the system to accompany its existing workflow that included URSA Mini Pro, Micro Studio Camera 4K, Blackmagic Studio Camera, and other ATEM production switchers. The URSA Broadcast with a Video Assist 4K and the URSA Mini Pro with an URSA Studio Viewfinder act as the main cameras, alongside five Micro Studio Camera 4Ks that are set up around the church to capture all angles of the pastor and band for sermons, concerts and other church events. Two of the Micro Studio Camera 4Ks are wireless, including one on a track on the ceiling controlled by a remote control chassis, and one on a DJI Ronin M Stabilizer.

The cameras are fed into the ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, two via wireless transmitters, with the ATEM located 120 feet away from the main stage. All of the outputs of the switcher are fed into a Smart Videohub 20x20 and routed to the return camera outputs and campus televisions in the pastor’s study, the nursery, and the church lobby. The team also uses two HyperDeck Studio Pros to record the program output and a clean feed output to use for B-roll.

“We are very impressed with the URSA Broadcast,” said Ricky. “The full length of the zoom range is awesome. We use it with two different HD B4 lenses, and there’s no softness on the edges. We are able to use the entire zoom ratio even at F1.7. I think that opens up a whole other market of churches. It is very easy to go between the M/Es on the ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel, because everything is laid out so well.”

In addition to operating during the weekly sermons on Sundays, NOW Church’s control room doubles as a recording studio during the week. By using the ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel to control the ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, Ricky has streamlined the switching process during broadcasts, as well as the process of converting the control room to a recording studio. The panel’s mobility and power over Ethernet allow his team to easily move the setup between rooms.

“We love the T-bar, the shortcuts with the macros and how everything is laid out on the panel,” said Ricky. “It’s very user friendly and everything is where it needs to be. For the church world, having something at this price point is huge. For the functionality it has, I think it’s a no brainer. Then when our broadcast is over, we can easily move the ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel from the desk in the control room to a separate engineering room. That way, everything stays on the network and we only have that one cable to plug in for the panel, which gives us everything we need. It’s super lightweight and well built. This would also be a great feature for mobile trucks, or other control rooms like ours that are multi-purpose.”

He continued, “We also have Micro Studio Camera 4Ks at various points in the room, and beingable to have the ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel control the PTZ type functions of the pan and tilt heads for these cameras is incredible. I think macros are where it’s headed in the industry. With this panel, that’s easy to do.”

Ricky concluded by saying, “What these products do is give the user options with their price points and 12G-SDI features. You can have SDI across the board. You can convert SDI to HDMI if needed. SJFD used BlackMagic’s ATEM production switcher to help establish a video communication system between stations.
SAN JOSE, CALIF.—Protecting the heart of Silicon Valley, the San Jose Fire Department responds to approximately 80,000 incidents annually over 200 square miles of urban and suburban area through 33 fire stations. Radio communication drives the response network, but keeping our firefighters in tune with the day-to-day issues confronting us is a challenge. The department is at its best when the men and women who directly deliver our services provide input on management decisions. This is best achieved in real time, but getting busy managers to 33 work sites on three different shifts is not practical.

POWERFUL AND PORTABLE
To address this gap, the video streaming project was initiated and funded as a pilot program and acquired the following key components: BlackMagic Design ATEM Television Studio switcher, BlackMagic Design HyperDeck Studio SSD recorder, 6-Core Mac Pro, three cameras and BlackMagic Design Mini Converters HDMI to SDI. For audio we selected the Behringer Xenix (X1204USB) and Ultramatch Pro (SRC2496) for AES/EBU conversion. We selected Livestream (Premium Plan) for streaming and messaging. All of the hardware, including three video monitors, is mounted onto a rolling cart that allows us to move production effortlessly throughout our building.

As a video production beginner, I was most concerned about the video switcher. I was worried about facing a steep learning curve, and with a limited budget, the wrong choice could have stopped us in our tracks. The ATEM Television Studio, a broadcast-quality production switcher for creating live SD and HD programming, turned out to be a great choice.

EASY TO ASSEMBLE
Setup was trouble free and I was fortunate to find some great information sources that cued me to the AES/EBU format and how to achieve it at a low cost. Using the ATEM switcher is very simple, and training others to step in takes only minutes.

The cameras output via a mini-HDMI port, which we convert to SDI for input to the switcher. Because of the static camera setup, we capture audio separately and process through the Behringer mixer and converter. The live three-camera production uploads through the ATEM in H.264 through the Mac Pro to Livestream.

We stream staff meetings following a published annual work plan as an agenda which means that we can now offer viewer participation on all of the issues that we are working on in the form of online messaging. After a few months of webcasted meetings and presentations, we are receiving very positive feedback from line personnel and have even found some unexpected efficiencies. The medium is still new to us and we anticipate even more benefits going forward.
