The abiding saga of advanced television standards requires patience. Noland brought plenty of that, along with a consensus-building leadership style and an encyclopedic knowledge of NextGen TV when she became ATSC president in May 2019. Noland had chaired several ATSC 3.0-related and implementation teams since 2012 and in standards roles, at Backchannelmedia Inc., Telvue Corp. and LG Electronics.

Noland began to earn her geek credentials as a kid. Her father, a university professor, gave her access to an acoustic coupler, which gave her access to the “campus mainframe” computers.

“I was soon playing text-based adventure games and learning to write programs in Basic and Fortran on this amazing new toy,” she recalled. Eventually she applied her tech interest to the media business at Backchannelmedia, a pioneer in advanced advertising solutions for ATSC 1.0, which was just emerging. 

As Noland moved through the standards process, she found it “gratifying to work with the brightest minds in broadcast engineering from around the globe.” As the groups discussed technical solutions, Noland was impressed to watch the “amazing intersection of technology and teamwork.”

She is also aware of on-going issues of the intertwined communications/media ecosystem. “ATSC 3.0 offers great potential to be a gamechanger for the media tech business,” Noland reflected. “But history suggests that vigilance, creative thinking and continually striving for progress will all be required to make good things happen.

“With next-gen technology, broadcasting is emerging from a largely local solution onto the global stage, joining other global data/media delivery systems such as the internet, Wi-Fi and LTE/5G. Cloud technology, the international outlook, IP-based workflows and new business scenarios [are] all coming together,” Noland observed, which means “the industry needs a huge range of skillsets.” 

As for ATSC’s agenda, Noland expects that camaraderie will continue to drive the group and fulfill her checklist: “How to help a group achieve its goals, how to build a great team, how to keep learning, how to make things happen, how to keep calm, how to stick up for your ideas, and how to listen.”

“And how we all need a good laugh from time to time.”

WASHINGTON—Advanced Television Systems Committee members have voted to re-elect two currently serving board members and two previous board members term-limited in 2018 to three-year terms beginning in January 2020, the committee announced today.

Two other directors were appointed to the board by their respective professional associations, it said.

The current board members elected to new terms are Dr. Jong Kim, senior vice president at LG Electronics and president of Zenith R&D Labs, and Pete Sockett, director of engineering and operations at Capitol Broadcasting.

The previous board members who are returning include Richard Friedel, executive vice president of operations and technology for Fox Television Stations, and Glenn Reitmeier, former NBCU senior vice president, technology standards and policy, and now president of GlennReitmeierTV LLC.

The Society of Motion Pictures & Television Engineers (SMPTE) appointed Dave Siegler, who previously represented Cox Media Group on the ATSC Board, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) named former ATSC Board Chairman Wayne Luplow to the board, ATSC said.

Current members whose terms will continue in 2020 include:

• Lynn Claudy, SVP, technology, NAB, who is ending is term as ATSC Board Chairman at year’s end;
• Mark, Corl, SVP Emergent Technology Development, Triveni Digital;
• Jim DeChant, VP of Technology, News-Press & Gazette Company;
• Jon Fairhurst, principal standards engineer, Samsung;
• Ira Goldstone, VP Next Gen Broadcast Solutions, Cobalt Digital;
• Brian Markwalter, SVP Research & Standards, CTA;
• Anne Schelle, managing director, Pearl TV;
• Andy Scott, VP of Engineering, NCTA-The Internet and Television Association;
• Craig Todd, SVP and CTO, Dolby.

Thomas Bause Mason, director of standards development, at SMPTE; Dr. Paul Hearty, owner, Technology Advisors; and Dr. Yiyan Wu, CTO, Communications Research Centre will complete their board terms at the end of 2019. A new board chairman will be elected during the board’s first meeting after the first of the year, ATSC said.

“The strategic direction and insights of our talented board members are especially important at this critical time as ATSC supports the commercialization of Next Gen Broadcasting in the U.S. and around the world,” said ATSC President Madeleine Noland. “I recognize and appreciate the board’s expertise and support for balancing progress and stability as ATSC 3.0 standards are updated and preparing for our future continues in the months and years ahead.”

WASHINGTON— Advanced Television Systems Committee members have elected four industry executives to three-year terms as ATSC Board of Directors, the committee announced today.

Pearl TV Managing Director Anne Schelle was reelected to the ATSC board. Jim DeChant, VP of Technology, News-Press Gazette Broadcasting; Ira Goldstone, Executive Engineer, Fox Television; and Dave Siegler, VP, technical operations, Cox Media Group are newly elected to the board. Their terms begin in January 2019.

Departing the board with the expiration of their terms at the end of 2018 are Brett Jenkins, EVP, CTO at Nexstar Media Group; Richard Friedel, EVP and GM, Engineering and Operations, Fox Networks; Glenn Reitmeier, SVP Technology, Standards & Policy at NBC; and Wayne Luplow, who represented the IEEE on the board. Friedel’s term as chairman also expires at the end of the year.

Current board members who will remain on the board in 2019 include: Lynn Claudy, NAB; Mark Corl, Triveni Digital; Jon Fairhurst, Samsung; Dr. Paul Hearty, Sony Electronics; Dr. Jong Kim, LG Electronics; Brian Markwalter, CTA; Thomas Bause Mason, SMPTE; Andy Scott, NCTA — The Internet and Television Association; and Craig Todd, Dolby. Dr. Yian Wu, Communications Research Centre, has been appointed to the 2019 board by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
