LOS ANGELES—Appearing at the NAB Show New York, the Roland V-60HD plug-n-play production switcher simplifies setups and includes SDI inputs for camera sources and scaled HDMI inputs for data, computer, tablet and other video sources. The combination of audio features that include multichannel embedded audio, XLR and RCA analog inputs, de-embedded audio from digital SDI or HDMI sources plus a variety of video connections with a program and aux bus makes the V-60HD suitable for a variety of live event and production applications.

The V-60HD is portable and small enough to be used in multiple locations in an office or outside meeting location. The four SDI inputs and two HDMI inputs enable switching cameras and computers at the same time for dynamic presentations. The de-interlacer on the SDI inputs allows users to mix and match 1080i and 1080p SDI video sources without external converters.

The company says audio is easier to mix using the V-60HD’s auto mixing function that will automatically balance audio levels from multiple microphones and video sources freeing up the operator to focus on switching the video for the event.

WINDSOR, CONN.—As a key component of Media Links’ integrated solutions, the new MDP3040 IP Media Gateway will be introduced to North America at NAB Show New York. Part of the MDP series of network edge devices, the MDP3040 is a multichannel 4K/UHD encoder/decoder with TICO lightweight compression supporting several configurations. The company says two 12G-SDI inputs can be TICO-encoded and transmitted over dual 10 GbE network trunk interfaces; or two TICO-encoded network streams can be simultaneously received and decoded as two 12G-SDI outputs. For delivering 4K/UHD signals over existing 3G-SDI infrastructures, the MDP3040 can function as a standalone two-channel 12G-SDI input to two-channel TICO compressed BNC output encoder, or as a two-channel TICO compressed BNC input to two-channel 12G-SDI output decoder.

At the core of Media Links common LAN/WAN architecture is its 100G switching solutions, which address the requirements of accelerated IP workflows essential for rapid network speeds and bandwidth demands. They deliver high port density enabling facilities to operate at any scale while reducing operational costs and infrastructure complexity. New services such as 4K UHD and remote/at home/distributed production can now be accommodated.

Hitless switching capability implemented across the Media Links portfolio provides network redundancy and media (video/audio and data) protection.

As a component of the Media Links soft-step IP migration toolkit and common LAN/WAN architecture, the ProMD EMS (Enhanced Management System) is a multi-user software-based application used to configure, provision, manage and troubleshoot small- to large-scale IP video and media transport networks.

Together, this family of solutions provides broadcasters with the ability to make a soft-step IP migration on a single multimedia service platform, all while using their existing SDI infrastructure.

NEW YORK—In today’s rapidly changing media world, the word “podcast” has cachet. The list of podcasters is growing at an almost frantic pace as personalities, radio stations and program producers discover their simple production values, relatively low production costs and easy distribution avenue—the internet. Meanwhile, a hungry audience grows.

The real questions concerning podcasting are: How to stand out in the crowd and how to, preferably at the same time, bring in the advertising dollars?

NAB Show New York will offer several podcast-oriented events and bring “live podcasts” to the show floor in the Podcast Studio.

“Watch as radio business-focused podcasts and popular New York-based podcasts record episodes live from the show floor,” event organizers announce on the show’s website. “You’ll hear interviews with premiere NAB Show New York presenters and have a chance to meet some of your favorite voices from various podcasts; all before the episodes are released to the public.” The Podcast Studio will be “on-the-air” Wednesday, Oct. 17 and Thursday, Oct. 18.

SESSIONS

The first session, “Creating and Growing Top Podcasts,” is scheduled for Wednesday Oct. 17, 3–3:30 p.m., in the Presentation Theater.

“Podcasting as a distribution platform offers a unique way of reaching listeners, but also has some inherent challenges when it comes to creating compelling content,” said Dan Franks, co-founder of the Podcast Movement, a podcast convention, and co-host of the session. “This session will explore not only the creation of content that has the best chance to be successful, but also discuss ways to help grow your audience.”

In a time of tight resources at many stations, Franks said that podcasts can be worth the effort. “If the podcast is created in a thoughtful and tactical way, then absolutely. Podcast listeners are passionate and loyal, and represent a desirable demographic to creators and advertisers alike. However podcasting is a different beast than radio, so it must be treated that way when it comes to developing content and executing the creation!”

Franks will be joined by fellow session co-host and Podcast Movement co-founder Jared Easley; moderator E.B. Moss, head of content strategy, MediaVillage; and panelists Patrick Hinds, host and producer, “True Crime Obsessed”; and Stuart Last, chief operating officer, Audioboom.

Following on Thursday, Oct. 18, 3–3:30 p.m. is “What’s Fueling America’s Podcast Ad Growth?” The moderator is Mark McCrery, founder and CEO of Podtrac. He’ll be joined by Brendan Monaghan, CEO of Panopoly, and Sarah Van Mosel, chief podcast sales and strategy officer at Market Enginuity.

Reportedly, U.S. podcast advertising revenue is on target to hit more than $400 million in 2018 and is projected to be over $650 million in 2020. The session will examine key factors fueling the growth, what advertisers find appealing about the medium and how challenges associated with rapid expansion are being addressed.

Hosted by the Podcast Movement, the podcasting community and creatives who want to leverage it are invited to the “Podcasters & Creatives Mixer,” which will take place 4:45–5:45 p.m. at Middle Bar.

CRANBURY, N.J.—IHSE will be at NAB Show New York to showcase the Draco ultra 495 Series. Built on IHSE's Draco ultra series extender platform and using the company’s Lici technology, the new Draco 495 series extenders for HDMI 2.0 provide full 4K video distribution for UHD 2160p, 30-bit 4:4:4 signals. The Draco ultra 495 transmitter/receiver set extends 4K (4096 x 2160 or 3840 x 2160) video and USB HID peripherals from the host system up to 10 kilometers/6.2 miles over single-mode fiber. They can be integrated as part of the Draco ultra series KVM switch fabric to share connections between HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort devices.

The Draco ultra 495 series extenders' visually lossless technology delivers graphics and video playback performance with the computer centrally located in a machine room via a single duplex LC-LC fiber-optic cable. The company says these extenders also support audio transmission via the HDMI interface. Also available are optional Draco vario add-on modules for digital audio input and output as well as data signals such as USB 2.0 and RS-232. For a direct video access in the server room, the CPU (TX) includes a local output to connect a control monitor. At the same time, there is a local input on the CON unit (RX) to connect a locally connected source (switchable). For mission-critical and 24/7 operations such as broadcast, 3D design, visualization and military command-and-control environments, the units can be installed in chassis assemblies for redundant power and redundant path distribution.

IHSE will also showcase its new Draco vario Remote IP-CPU extender module, an expansion of the company’s Draco vario series. This virtual KVM solution enables the integration of virtual servers into existing Draco tera KVM physical switch systems, creating a streamlined multitasking virtual environment where multiple operating systems and applications can be accessed directly from the physical consoles of the Draco KVM system.

The Remote IP-CPU extender module is particularly suited to control rooms with virtualized process automation, network operations centers that require real-time access to real and virtual target devices, and TV and film industry environments that rely increasingly on virtualized desktops. Users can access virtual machines directly from their own KVM-connected workstations via RDP (remote desktop protocol) or perform simple PC maintenance remotely. According to the company the functionality of the Draco KVM system offers options such as real-time switching; sharing; private mode; and flexible, unrestricted access to all connected computers and virtual machines.

WAYNE, N.J.—JVC Professional Video, a division of JVCKenwood USA Corp., has expanded its CONNECTED CAM product line to include the new 500 Series of streaming handheld camcorders. The three new cameras — the GY‑HC500 base model, GY‑HC550 with advanced streaming and graphics and GY-HC500SPC sports production camera — will be introduced at NAB Show New York, which runs Oct. 17–18 at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City.

CONNECTED CAM models are designed to optimize both image processing and IP performance. Designed for live IP production and 4K acquisition, the new 500 Series cameras can record to SSD (solid state drive) media in a variety of formats, including 10-bit ProRes 422 at 4K resolution and 50/60p frame rates. A number of other codecs and recording formats are also available including H.264 and MPEG-2, ensuring a range of workflows can be supported.

All three 500 Series cameras also include dual SDHC/SDXC media card slots with redundant, relay, backup and proxy recording modes. Users can choose economical SD memory or SSD for production quality recording, or record to SSD in 4K while simultaneously recording HD or proxy files to SD media. Any or all clips can be uploaded via Auto FTP during production.

The company says for reliable 1080p streaming performance up to 20 Mbps, the 500 Series features SMPTE 2022 forward error correction. When paired with any ProHD Bridge product, all models provide bidirectional live streaming with low latency (less than 500ms) and return video and IFB. The GY-HC550 also includes dual external antennas with built-in wireless LAN, integrated GPS and Zixi error correction with automatic repeat request (ARQ).

The 500 Series cameras are built around a new 1-inch 4K CMOS imager and integrated 20x zoom lens with three-ring control and built-in ND filters. When shooting in HD, the company says lossless 40x dynamic zoom is possible. The cameras can achieve up to 12 stops of dynamic range with high sensitivity and low noise. Users can record HDR footage in the HLG (hybrid log gamma) mode or 10-bit J-Log mode, which expands dynamic range by 800 percent with film-like latitude. Plus, the cameras record in a variety of native 4K UHD and HD file formats, and support 120 fps slow-motion HD recording. The GY-HC550 adds MPEG-2 and MXF recording as well.

CHAMPAIGN, ILL.—At the 2018 NAB Show New York, Cobalt Digital will demonstrate the 9904-UDX-4K-12G UHD 12G/3G/HD/SD-SDI up/down/cross-converter, the company’s latest generation of advanced image and audio processors for the openGear platform. The base card provides quad 3G-SDI and 12G-SDI I/O with SDI muxing and demuxing and up/down/cross-conversion. Options include RGB color correction and SDR-to-HDR up-mapping via Technicolor’s HDR Intelligent Tone Management (ITM) processing.

Also on display will be Cobalt’s new 9971-MV18-4K series of openGear multiviewers. These support the latest signal types with a high-density modular design that can be expanded as required. The MV18 is equipped with 18 4K 12G-SDI auto-detect inputs, which the company says can be scaled as needed across a full 3840 x 2160 UHD raster output.

The 9992-ENC-4K-HEVC H.265 Streaming Encoder for openGear will be demonstrated. The platform supports quad 3G-SDI and 12G-SDI inputs and is also configurable as a multichannel encoder (up to four channels) for 1080p60 signals and below using MPEG-2, H.264 or HEVC, with all channels using the same compression standard.

The new Cobalt Digital OG-PC computer card is an x86 computer on an openGear card. The OG-PC takes advantage of the redundant power and cooling features of the openGear frame. The card’s modular form-factor saves on rack space by replacing bulky 1RU PCs.
