ARLINGTON, VA.—The 2017 IEEE Broadcast Symposium returned to its Washington, D.C. area “roots” today after four years on the road. The technical conference, which has been an annual industry event since the early 1950s, kicked off with opening remarks from Society president William Hayes, who then introduced Symposium co-chair, Robert Weller.

“Welcome to the 67th IEEE annual broadcast symposium,” said Weller. “We have over 170 people registered this year, which testifies to the importance that working engineers and consultants place on this event,” noting that sessions would feature a number of industry leaders and cover a variety of technologies, including the U.S. TV broadcast spectrum repack, hybrid radio and more.

Before beginning the scheduled presentations, Weller shifted to a somber note, asking conference attendees to observe a minute of silence in memory of the three TV tower workers–Brachton Barber, Marcus Goffena and Benito Rodriguez–who lost their lives in the recent Miami job site accident.

More than 30 broadcast-related papers are scheduled for delivery during the Oct. 10-12 conference, with topics ranging from cybersecurity to the development of cameras for 8K UHD operation, and presenters traveling from as far away as Japan and Korea. In addition to conference track presentations, the Symposium will also feature luncheon keynote addresses with speakers from the Department of Defense, the Library of Congress and the Drone Girl organization.

ARLIGNTON, VA.—The 2017 IEEE Broadcast Symposium has announced that it will be featuring Sally French, founder of the Drone Girl website, as one of its keynote speakers. She joins the previously announced James Snyder as a keynote.

The Drone Girl site reports on drone news and activites. French is a well regarded public speaker on drones and drone technology, having been named one of the “4 Top Women Shaping the Drone Industry” by Fortune Magazine. French will use her keynote to discuss the impact drones will make on the broadcasting industry.

ARLINGTON, VA.—James Snyder will be traveling up from Culpepper, Va., to the Washington D.C. area to serve as a keynote speaker at the 2017 IEEE Broadcast Symposium, per an announcement from the IEEE Broadcast Technology Society. Snyder is the senior administration for the Library of Congress’ National Audio-Visual Conservation Center and specializes in data and media archiving, preservation, production and project management.

Snyder’s responsibility at NAVCC is to administer the overall technical infrastructure for audio, video and film preservation and digitalization technologies, including long-term planning and implementation, long-term data preservation planning and implementation, technology services to the U.S. Congress and organizations on Capitol Hill, as well as serving as standards participation and technology liaison with media content producers worldwide.

ARLINGTON, VA.—Interested parties can lock in their plans for the 2017 IEEE Broadcast Symposium as the organization has officially opened up registration.

The IEEE Broadcast Symposium is a three-day event that will bring together broadcast engineering experts for networking opportunities, equipment/technology demonstrations, technical sessions and the new addition of a poster session and exhibits.

ARLINGTON, VA.—IEEE BTS wants to hear your ideas for papers for the 2017 IEEE Broadcast Symposium. The conference is accepting abstract paper proposals of up to 500 words that focus on topics that can range from digital radio and television systems to AES interoperability, IP networking standards and broadcast spectrum issues.

Submissions must be submitted via email to bts@ieee.org and indicate that the abstract submitted is for the 2017 IEEE Broadcast Symposium, include the corresponding author’s full name and contact information, including affiliation, address, email and phone number. The deadline for submitting abstract proposals will be May 15.

Submitters will also be entered into a drawing to receive free registration to the IEEE Broadcast Symposium for them and a guest.
