FCC rolls out campaign to inform consumers about DTV

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell has launched a program to reach out to U.S. consumers with education on digital television. The program was developed in an effort to inform consumers about the transition for analog to digital television, and to provide tools with which to help them join in the changeover to DTV.
FCC Chairman Michael talks to a crowd in Washington D.C. about “DTV –Get it!” — an education and outreach campaign that will be multi-phased and last several years.
Calling the digital television landscape uncharted territory for most U.S. households, Powell pledged that the commission would not let them go it alone in making the transition.
To help consumers with the transition, the chairman unveiled www.dtv.gov. The public can visit the Web portal for the latest news about the transition to DTV, and find a listing of the current HD programming availability. The site will also answer frequently asked questions and provide guidance for DTV shoppers.
The chairman also announced plans to provide consumers with tip sheets on DTV at several electronics retailers nationwide. Working with the Consumer Electronics Association and the Consumer Electronics Retailers Coalition, the FCC will create a tip sheet that:
Describes DTV features and equipment Provides a glossary of related terms Explains that legacy TVs will require a converter box after analog switchoff
Best Buy, Circuit City, RadioShack and Tweeter – all CERC board members - will distribute the tip sheet at their stores.
The newly launched “DTV –Get it!” education and outreach campaign will be multi-phased and last several years.
