Consumers Show Little Interest in 3DTV
Study shows little connection between 3D and HDTV purchases

According to a recent study by J.D. Power and Associates, only a small number of consumers who purchase high-definition television receivers were motivated to do so because of 3D capabilities.

The "2012 High Definition (HDTV) Report" was released on Aug. 22 and is based on responses from more than 1,000 persons who purchased HDTVs during the past 12 months. It showed that just 11 percent of purchasers were motivated by 3D capability.

"While still finding its niche, 3D HDTV capability is not a leading force in purchasing a television," said Sara Wong Hilton, a director at J.D. Power and Associates. "One reason is that 3D HDTVs are typically more expensive than non-3D-capable HDTVs. Additionally, in order to view 3D media, special media players, and 3D glasses in some cases, are required. The extra cost could play a role in dissuading customers from adopting the technology at this point."

The study said that 75 percent of customers surveyed gave price as the primary motivation for making their HDTV purchases. This was followed by brand reputation (60 percent), positive reviews (37 percent), past brand experience (36 percent), construction quality (33 percent), styling (29 percent), and ease of use (21 percent).

Half of the customers responding to the survey said they purchased 41- to 50-inch sets. The poll also showed that LCD displays were more popular than LED or plasma models and that Visio led the field in customer satisfaction, scoring 887 on a 1,000 point scale.

No surprise: - not enough 'content' in 3D, movie directors don't know how to use 3d, even after 75 years...; - 3d glasses to expensive and... unreliable: empty batteries all the time; - no interest/offers from broadcasters, not even experiments (except e.g. BBC with 3d flashes of the Olympics after midnight...) - 3d is a completely other movie- / picture language: as long as directors/producers/creatives don't understand this and can't find ways to really use this new language, audience will be dissappointed gain and again... - Why not Dial M for Murder available in 3d high definition ?

Apart from cost, there's the fact that there are people who simply can't watch 3D television without developing headaches/eye-strain/migraines. I would never want a 3D television myself for that very reason.

I can assure you more than 11% are interested in 3D- but the leading factor is price, as the study shows. It's disappointing though that people find branding to be so much more important than reviews and construction quality. I guess people just like to waste their money on a false sense of security.

The main reason people are not interested is the complete lack of innovative 3D programming! Why would anyone want to spend money so they can watch something either "converted" to 3D or some complete rubbish that was made in 3D just to jump on the bandwagon? We have had two 3D sets so far and I doubt we have watched more than 5hrs of 3D viewing in nearly two years. Not fantastic value for money? Luckily both tv's were brilliant HD sets in their own right. Not sure next set will be 3D unless we get some decent programming at reasonable prices. Follow me on twitter @kwpc1
