Utah Scientific routes sports programs for Iowa Hawkeyes

The University of Iowa has installed a UTAH-400 HD router along with an SC-4 control system and a SoftPanel-1 software panel to help broadcast and stream a wide array of university programming, including its Hawkeye sports.

The purchase was part of an incremental upgrade of its video facility from analog to digital. A major factor in the acquisition was the UTAH-400’s analog compatibility, because most of Iowa’s current master control system is comprised of analog channels.

To keep the initial investment reasonable, the university chose to install what is now a sparsely populated 144 x 144 matrix, knowing that future growth can be accommodated with the simple addition of digital cards.

The University of Iowa Video Services comes under the mantle of the university’s IT department and, therefore, specializes in Web streaming. Campus and regional cable TV feeds are also required. The school said the UTAH-400’s versatility enabled it to input a single feed and output it in multiple formats for an MPEG-2 encoder, analog CATV modulators and digital SD and HD satellite uplink.
