Ted Turner recognized with IBC International Honor for Excellence

September 16, 2004

IBC awarded its International Honor for Excellence to Ted Turner.

Cable-television giant Ted Turner has received the 2004 IBC International Honor for Excellence in recognition of his vision for cable television and ability to implement his plan to use the medium to attract a large national and international audience.

The award, which previously was called the IBC John Tucker Award, is presented annually to an individual, group or organization that demonstrates excellence in innovating or furthering the application of media technology.

Turner, who was unable to attend the conference, received the award July 22 in New York City from IBC Partnership Board Chairman Michael Bunce. The award presentation ceremony was taped and portions were played back during the IBC Awards Ceremony.

Turner was one of the first people to put a local television station up on satellite for distribution to a nationwide audience, and he was one of the first to think that cable television would be a success, said Peter Owen, who chaired the jury selecting the winner for IBC.
