STMicroelectronics introduces one-chip audio processor and amplifier
STMicroelectronics’ new audio processing and amplifier chip is designed to increase performance from compact equipment. The latest addition to the company’s Sound Terminal family, the STA339BWS is optimized for applications such as mobile TV that use small, low-cost speakers. Its high operating efficiency lets it work without heatsinks, potentially reducing mobile TV size and weight, consuming less power and extending battery life. By combining into a single device functions that previously required a multichip solution, the STA339BWS simplifies product design and assembly.
The STA339BWS combines IP from STMicroelectronics' audio processing and class-D power amplifier ICs into a single chip. Its multiband dynamic range compression uses the latest sound-processing algorithms to enhance the performance of low-cost speakers and prevent large bass signals from causing vibrations and damaging small speaker units.
Another feature is a seven-band equalizer. By offering two more biquads than common five-band equalizers, the STA339BWS improves speaker response and shaping of sound effects. Continuous audio streaming when changing channels or audio sources saves muting the output to suppress noise during each transition. The output can be configured to deliver 2x20W stereo into 8ohm speakers or 2.1 channels at 2x10W plus 20W. This flexibility allows one hardware platform to serve several different products, the company said.
