: Media Excel licenses On2 Technologies software for transcoding

Video compression supplier On2 Technologies, Inc. has signed a licensing agreement with Media Excel Inc., a provider of video content distribution solutions for mobile TV, the Internet and IPTV platforms. The new module will be available later this year.

Under terms of the new agreement, Media Excel will implement On2's TrueMotion VP6 digital video encoding software in its DSP-based transcoder acceleration module, as part of Media Excel's HERA appliance family. The TrueMotion VP6 codec, which is the video compression technology behind Adobe's Flash animation engine.

This new functionality will provide encoding video streams in VP6 for live, real-time broadcasting of Adobe Flash video and off-line transcoding to the Flash protocol. The HERA product line is used to simultaneously encode and broadcast digital video content in the MPEG-2, MPEG-4 (Part 2, H.263) and MPEG4-H.264 (AVC) formats, with the ability to adjust bit rates as necessary.

For On2 Technologies, the tight integration of VP6 into Media Excel's DSP solutions expands its reach beyond the computer screen and to the digital home and mobile TV device market, according to the company.
