Varuna Entertainment captures reality TV with Canon camcorders
12/22/2008

Los Angeles-based production company Varuna Entertainment is using a full complement of Canon XH G1 HD camcorders to capture dramatic, challenging and often dangerous footage for two of its latest cable reality series.

The company purchased the Canon camcorders while transitioning its “Trick My Truck” series to HD production. Its also used them on a new series called “Ski Patrol: Crystal Mountain,” which debuted on truTV this past October, and for an as-yet-untitled series for The History Channel documenting the hazardous world of marine salvage operations.

In addition to its Canon 20x HD zoom lens and Optical Image Stabilization, the XH G1 HD also features three 1/3in native 16:9 1.67 million pixel CCDs, for 1080 HD image capture with a choice of frame rates, 23 independently adjustable settings, and industry-standard connections for genlock, HD-SDI/SD-SDI output, and SMPTE time code.

Varuna also used the VIXIA HV30 consumer HD camcorder for certain high-risk shots.
