Worldwide IPTV homes to reach 36 million by 2011, says report
10/10/2006

By 2011, the number of homes worldwide with IPTV service will reach 36 million, up about seven times from the 4.8 million homes that will receive IPTV by the end of this year, according to a new report from Informa Telecoms & Media.

The report, “IPTV: A Global Analysis (Second edition),” points out that the forecast for 2011 represents only 3.4 percent of the television households worldwide.

Informa’s forecast of 4.8 million IPTV households by the end of the year is almost a doubling from the 2005 level of 2.5 million. According to Informa media manager Adam Thomas, much of the growth this year and over the next couple of years will be the result of service launches by European telcos.

According to the Informa report, IPTV generated revenues from subscriptions and VOD of less than $1 billion last year. By 2011, Informa forecasts $12.2 billion in revenue, with $11.3 billion coming from subscriptions and about $1 billion from VOD service.

By 2011, China is expected to lead the IPTV market in terms of number of subscribers, with 11.2 million. Hong Kong will retain its leadership in terms of household penetration, and the United States will contribute the highest IPTV revenues.
