NILES, ILL: Microphone maker Shure is extending its rebate program for systems tuned to the 700 MHz band. The FCC last week issued its expected order for wireless mics to be removed from the 700 MHz spectrum. Users of wireless mics tuned to that bandwidth have until June 12, 2010 to retired the devices to preserve the spectrum for public safety communications and eventually fourth-generation consumer devices.

Shure anticipated the sunset on 700 MHz systems and offered a rebate of up to $1,000 on trade-ins of its own and other qualifying systems. The program initially ended Dec. 31, 2009, but now that the FCC has issued its sunset date for 700 MHz systems still in use, Shure said it would extend its rebate program through June 30, 2010.

Shure said it hasn’t made 700 MHz systems since 2007, but that many continue to be used by theaters, schools, meeting facilities and houses of worship. The mic company said it would help users determine if they needed to replace systems or if those systems could be retuned. Systems tuned to the UHF TV band, 470 to 698 MHz.   Print Page
