House Commerce Republicans Named
2/6/2009

Republican members have been named to the House Energy and Commerce Committee, where a majority of federal TV legislation takes place. Ranking member Joe Barton of Texas, who was replaced as chairman by California Democrat Henry Waxman, made the announcement.

Most of the names are familiar. Florida Congressman Cliff Stearns returns. He’ll be the ranking member on the communications subcommittee, where broadcast and Internet legislation foments. Michigan Congress man Fred Upton is back, as are Nathan Deal of Georgia; George Radanovich of California, and Greg Walden of Oregon.

Other alumni include Illinois Congressman John Shimkus, Arizona’s John Shadegg, Mary Bono of California, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee and Lee Terry of Nebraska. The complete list is available at Barton’s Web site.

Moving the DTV transition deadline was one of the first action items on the committee’s docket during this Congressional session. After an initial derailing by Republicans, who opposed a delay, the Democrats moved through legislation to open a deadline window of Feb. 17 through June. 12.
