AT&T Broadband, Comcast to Lay Off 1,700
10/10/2002

About 1,700 positions will be eliminated following the merger of AT&T Broadband and Comcast, the two companies have announced. Most of the job cuts will be in the executive and management roles.

The companies also announced that about 4,000 ¾ or about 70 percent of ¾ AT&T Broadband jobs currently located in Colorado will remain in the state after the merger is completed. As previously announced, the newly formed Mountain Division will serve 3.3 million subscribers in the Dallas, Denver, Seattle, Portland, Salt Lake City, Arizona and New Mexico markets, will be headquartered in Denver and will represent a major hub of operations for the company.

AT&T Broadband currently has 40,000 employees and Comcast Corp. has 38,000, including 20,000 cable division employees. The two companies expect regulatory approval of the merger ¾ which would result in the nation's largest cable operation ¾ by the end of 2002.
